Feel The Vibe and Find Your Tribe – The Ramble Festival Announces Their 2023 Lineup

Last year The Ramble Festival burst onto the festival circuit as if it had been a long-established festival and we all somehow failed to notice them for all these years. Everywhere music fans went in 2022, they saw strategically placed banners and flyers announcing their 2022 lineup. People asked how they had overlooked this magical festival.

Little did we all know that the 2022 edition was the first edition of this festival and was the brainchild of two passionate music lovers who manifested and breathed life into this special music festival.

Ramblin On Underneath the Harvest Moon
With cooler temperatures sneaking in, hours of daylight getting fewer and fewer and holidays just over the horizon, we have[...]

With one outstanding year under their belt, the creative geniuses behind The Ramble Festival are back to capturing lighting in a bottle and have announced the lineup for their second Ramble Festival slated for October 6th - 8th, 2023, at Camp Ramblewood in Darlington, MD. For those who attended the inaugural Festival you will notice some familiar artists including The Traveling McCourys, Neighbor, Bella's Bartok, Caleb Stine, The Dirty Grass Players, Dogs in a Pile, Kendal Street Company, The Hellbenders, and Naptown Brass Band. It is as if every musician performing at The Ramble Festival wants to return and relive those three days of magic and fun all over again.

This year The Ramble Festival features three new headlining acts, including The Del McCoury Band, Talk Moore with Robert Randolph, Jason Hann & The Funky Dawgs, Horns, and The Motet. Other notable acts include Magic Beans, Perpetual Groove, Danielle Williams, The Deer Creek Sharpshooters, Fishing for Hippies, The Hillbenders Whograss (because the only thing better than The Hillbenders' music is some bluegrass music of The Who), Isaac Haden Organ Trio, Frederick's very own Natalie Brooke, Rebekah Todd, Red Clay Revival, Shadowgrass, Sneezy, The Sweet Lillies, Uncle Kunkel's One Gram Band, and Yam Yam. In addition to all this musical magic Ramble Festival has not one, but two Artists At Large - Kanika Moore and Emerging Artist At Large - Isaac Hadden.

Ramble Festival 2023 Full Lineup

So why do we think Ramble Festival is one of the most amazing and refreshing of festivals on the calendar?  Let us tell you a little more about the festival.

No VIP -  At the Ramble, there are no VIPs because everyone is a VIP.

Festival Organizers Brick and J are breaking down the barriers that divide and bringing people together into a big 'ole community of music lovin' Ramblers. The last thing they want to do is divide folks into different groups when all they really want to do is bring folks together.

Let us repeat this again for everyone reading this article  - at the Ramble, there are no VIPs because everyone is a VIP.   This is beyond refreshing and whole heartedly authentic!

Transparent Pricing -  The price advertised is the price you pay out-the-door.

Late night shows, showers, and tent camping are all included in the price of a full weekend pass.. Ya know what sucks? Going to buy a ticket to a festival, getting to the checkout page, and finding out that there are big time fees on top of the ticket price. Brick and J don't like that when we buy tickets to a festival, so they're not doing that to you at the Ramble. The price advertised is the price you pay out-the-door. Late night shows, showers, and tent camping are all included in the price.

Beer Hall Stage -  An Oktoberfest style beer hall, local breweries pouring handcrafted brews, and a stage that keeps you groovin' all weekend.

Close your eyes an imagine - an Oktoberfest style beer hall, local breweries pouring off scrumptious handcrafted brews, a stage serving up some of the sweetest sounding tap-tappers in the game, and the smilin' faces of your tribe sittin' across the table from you with mischievous twinkles in their eyes. Is it paradise? Maybe. Ramblers just call it the Beer Hall Stage at the Ramble Festival, but feel free to call it whatever you'd like.

Ramble Bugs - Don't believe us? Com'on out and see for yourself.

The fireflys at Ramblewood are big damn heroes and just happen to be our favorite! The bugs found at Ramblewood are eminently polite, genteel even. You may even call them amiable or even downright neighborly. Com'on out and see for yourself. The fireflys at Ramblewood are big damn heroes and just happen to be our favorite!

Artist Led Campfire Jams -  Jamming around a campfire with artists that are playing The Ramble? Hell yeah!

Jamming around a campfire with artists that are playing The Ramble? Hell yeah! Bring your instrument out and pick the night away with artists you'll see on stage and friends you haven't met yet.

The people behind the festival wanted to create a festival vibe and feel that aligned with their authentic nature. Last year they created a new festival that was truly cherished by everyone who attended - festival goers and artists alike! If you have yet to go to this festival, we cannot recommend attending enough! From the moment you drive up to the gates at Camp Ramblewood you will understand how unique this festival is - from the very smallest and hand-crafted details to the world-class lineup. Awake each morning with a New Orlean's inspired second line marching throughout the festival grounds, spend all day enjoying music on one of the many stages, stay up late at night with genius collaborations, and top it off with artist-led campfires. This festival has something for everyone and music lovers of all ages - bring your kids and inner child!

Need more Reasons To Ramble? Feel the vibe and find your tribe! We have witnessed this tribe firsthand and cannot express our gratitude to the organizers of The Ramble Festival enough.

See everyone on the other side of the summer for the best end-of-season festival you can imagine!

Wammies 35th Anniversary Recap – Celebrating Music In The DMV

On Saturday, April 1st, The Musicianship held its spectacular annual Wammie Awards at Capital Turnaround to honor the DMV’s 2023’s music nominees. This year’s 35th annual award show re-electrified the region’s artistic recognition after being bound by covid-19 restrictions. Resurfacing with the elaborate theme “The Hitmakers Ball”, this particular celebration was beyond memorable for those of all walks across the district.

The event was a ball indeed, with attendees wearing elegant outfits, strolling down the lengthy red carpet dazzled with Hollywood stars of previous winners. Saturday night’s nominees took turns waltzing through the various lined-up interviewers, speculating on what the night would hold. Throughout the entire evening, artists, attendees, and media personnel exchanged smiles as music-centered conversations filled the large venue.

WUSA 9’s Emmy-award winning anchors Allison Seymour and Darren Haynes co-hosted the event, bringing immense laughter the entire night. Their commentary and personal spin on the ceremony captivated and energized the crowd. Bouncing back from the previous covid-restricted celebration, the Musicianship’s elaborate efforts brought a newly found liveliness to congratulate artists across the DMV.

The two hour award show held spectacular live performances from artists across all genres. Selling out over 900 seats, attendees could only expect greatness on Saturday night’s agenda. The night’s first live performance was prepared by Washington’s Youth Choir, who elegant voices enchanted the room. Shortly after fans were lifted up and out of their seats, as Rayshun LaMarr from NBC’s The Voice and astounding guitarist Nessa Dove shook the stage with “Lift Every Voice Higher”.

Later that evening, performances from Americana duet 3 Exits to Memphis, singer songwriter Dominique Bianco, and best music video award winning Latin rock band Perro Sombra rang out, showcasing the many talented artists from our area. One of the most memorable was the collaboration between hip hop artists Marc2Ray and trap-operatic Soprano Alexandria Chirchlow, an unbeatable duo blending two divergent genres. DJ D-Rex spun jams throughout the entire night, curated the perfect vibe to every segment of the show.

Celebrating 50 years of Hip Hop, artists like Uptown X.O, innanet James, Pinky Killacorn, Nonchalant, and Whistle performed to honor all within the genre. In addition to this, grammy-nominated Mumu Fresh dazzled fans with her breathtaking performance and speech after winning the Hitmaker Award, bringing tears to viewer’s eyes. During the tribute, the DMV Hip Hop Hall of Fame was displayed on screen, showcasing the area’s most critically acclaimed artists within the genre.

A memorium was also announced, honoring passed members of the region’s musical community. While the names of those artists were read, singer Fairouz Foty and harpist Megan-Joie Coleman caressed listener’s ears. The tribute was both beautiful and sweet gesture to remember those from the region who could no longer be with us.

Hip hop pioneer Tarek ‘Terk’ Stevens received the Trailblazer Award, Audrey Schaefer, the saver of our music venues rightfully collected the Music Advocacy Award, and DC Public Schools’s Dr Rolyndria Ojo obtained the Music Educator Award. Other winners included Songbyrd Music House for Best Music Venue, Girls Rock! DC for Do Good Award, and Tonal Park for Best Music Studio.

By the time the Wammie wrapped up, fans couldn’t help but to be bouncing around the venue, rejuvenated by all of the breathtaking acts. This night was one for the books, with explicit raw talent presented and music enthusiasts across the region growing closer. After this past weekend’s ceremony, DMV residences can expect another extravaganza from the Musicianship next year.

Lauren Morrow Set To Perform At Jammin’ Java On June 14

After over a decade as the centerpiece of popular Americana band The Whiskey Gentry, Lauren Morrow packed her bags, her dogs, her cats, and husband and moved to Nashville to pursue a career as a solo artist and grow her craft as a songwriter and performer. Within months, she released her first solo EP to widespread critical acclaim and landed on many Best Of year ends lists from Rolling Stone to Garden & Gun, quickly launching her already budding career and sending it into hyperdrive. Over the next year, Morrow filmed an episode for PBS’ Bluegrass Underground and toured the US playing festivals such as Pickathon and Bristol Rhythm & Roots to name a few.

Morrow’s new album, People Talk, released on March 31, showcases her flawless vocals and intricate songwriting, but also her willingness to take risks — an edge that makes her stand out from the Nashville norm. Whether she’s singing an alternative/indie rock banger, a classic-country crooner, or a traditional lovesick ballad, there’s a unique impression she leaves that lingers and is unlike anything you’ve heard before.

"Lauren Morrow has always displayed a keen ear for twangy ballads and fiery rockers that are gritty and heartfelt. Her striking voice and songwriting talent has earned her praise from an array of Americana tastemakers,” wrote Immersive Atlanta earlier this week, “On her debut album, however, Morrow ventures into new sonic territory and strikes gold. Falling somewhere between Shania Twain and Fiona Apple, People Talk is a swirling bouquet of steel guitar, rock drums, smooth pianos, and Morrow’s elegantly spun phrases. Put simply, it’s a fucking delight to listen to this genre-blending record."

People Talk finds Morrow exploring her beyond-country influences like 90s Alternative, Britpop, and 80s New Wave bands with moody, brutally honest lyrical content and rock n roll attitudes; all with Morrow’s signature soprano and vulnerable vibrato and a host of atypically-Americana vibes and tones. The end result is a patiently cultivated and refined sound not unfamiliar to fans, but a pure expression of everything Morrow is made of—not just what we’ve seen so far.

Limited edition highlighter yellow vinyl can be purchased at laurenmorrow.com/store.  Morrow celebrated the release of People Talk with a show at Nashville’s favorite downstairs rock club, The Basement, before heading out on a Spring tour through Scandinavia followed by US Summer tour dates starting May 31st. We are very happy that Lauren Morrow will appear at Jammin' Java on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, opening up for Joshua Hedley.

Want to hear more from Morrow - look no further than Georgia Public Broadcasting’s The Peach Jam Podcast about songwriting, seeing her parents as real people, and her love of the Atlanta Braves.

Kitchen Dwellers Set To Perform At The Hamilton On April 29th

Among the many natural wonders in Montana, Wise River runs for about 30 miles through the Southwestern region of the state, cutting through the mountains and flowing into the Big Hole River. Beyond being a favorite spot for fly fishermen, it remains etched into the topography of the land itself.  Two hours away in Bozeman, Kitchen Dwellers equally embody the spirit and soul of their home with a sonic palette as expansive as Montana’s vistas.

The quartet—Shawn Swain (Mandolin), Torrin Daniels (banjo), Joe Funk (upright bass), and Max Davies (acoustic guitar) —twist bluegrass, folk, and rock through a kaleidoscope of homegrown stories, rich mythology, American west wanderlust, and psychedelic hues. After amassing 5 million-plus streams, selling out shows, and receiving acclaim from Huffington Post, Relix, American Songwriter, and more, the group brings audiences back to Big Sky Country on their third full-length album, Wise River.

Coming off an incredible performance at WinterWonderGrass 2023, The Kitchen Dwellers are riding a wave of virtuosic bluegrass wizardry,  ecstatic rock energy and adventurous psychedelia, to The Hamilton on Saturday, April 29th.

The group has come fully into their own, seamlessly blending the past, present, and future of string band music.  We are truly grateful for their past performances and are delighted to witness in person their present and future performances.  Hope to see everyone at The Hamilton Live on Saturday, April 29th.

Hello Mary performs at Songbyrd in Washington DC on March 25, 2023

Hello Mary Dominates the Modern Rock Scene During Their DC Debut

On Saturday, March 25, infectious band Hello Mary lit the stage on fire during their first headlining show in Washington, D.C. Emmitting echoes of 90s and 2000s rock, the band brings their own twist to the genre, creating a unique and modern style within the new age of music. Incorporating intoxicating guitar rifts and heart-thumping beats, Hello Mary shook fans to their core with every song.

Helena Straight of Hello Mary

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Hello Mary’s roots are far from lost within their sound. The three-piece rock band is comprised of guitarist and vocalist Helena Straight, drummer and vocalist Stella Wave, and bassist Mikaela Oppenheimer. Together, the musical masterminds have created an insatiable sound, ready to dominate the modern scene.

Helena Straight of Hello Mary

Helena Straight

Performing at Songbyrd Music House, the band’s angelic voices entranced the crowd, with fans barely blinking during the entire set. Revving up the crowd with the onset of Stinge, listeners were promptly transported back decades when grunge first arose. Tremendous roars from the crowd erupted throughout the night as each song commenced. Next, Looking Right Into The Sun rang out, with fans nodding align to every note. Bodies subconsciously swayed and stomps slammed the floor as Hello Mary electrified the stage.

“Thank you all for being here, it means so much,” said Wave during their set. “Our first headlining show in DC.” Claps and cheers bounced from wall to wall, filling the venue with immense vitality.

Mikaela Oppenheimer of Hello Mary

Their self-titled album Hello Mary stole the show, with features of Rabbit, Spiral, and Evicted. Right before playingComfort drummer wave cracked her knuckles, giving fans a slight taste of the thrill they would endure. Thrashing the drums, Wave threw her head back and forth evoking shrills from the crowd. Simultaneously, Straight and Oppenheimer chimed in, ferociously shredding while waltzing around the stage. Each strum provoked more and more screams from fans as they spit lyrics back to the band.

Mikaela Oppenheimer of Hello Mary

Mikaela Oppenheimer

During Spiral Hello Mary’s tender friendship was apparent, with Straight kissing Wave’s forehead mid-song and later resting their heads atop one another. Throughout almost every song, each member unveiled radiant smiles amongst each other and the audience. The flow between the trio is unmatched, with band members seeming to telepathically communicate as they exchanged silent looks and nods.

Stella Wave of Hello Mary

Showcasing a plethora of sounds, the band would teeter between mellow and rip-roaring anthems. Sink In embodies a perfect example of that, going from high highs to low lows. This single binds echoes of both 90s bands, The Cranberries and Smashing Pumpkins, with exchanges of long-held notes and heart-wrenching guitar solos. Straight practically murdered her instrument as the song came to a close, portraying one of the most passion-ridden melodies.

Stella Wave of Hello Mary

Stella Wave

Finishing up, Ginger struck the ears of eagerly waiting listeners, heads thrashing around unceasingly. Even a small pit broke out to the right of the stage, with arms and legs flying left and right. Music coursed through fans' veins, moving intuitively with every lyric. Hello Mary had prompted an unstoppable wave of adoration for modern indie rock, distinctly apparent with one glimpse inside the venue.

Before the onset of Hello Mary’s set, openers Flowers For The Dead and BRNDA warmed up the stage with their own editions of modern rock. Local to the area, Flowers For The Dead is a DC-based rock project of guitarist and vocalist Suzanne Szegö. Much like Hello Mary, their sound draws on 90s grunge. The guitarist in the band made an everlasting impression on fans, pumping his heart and soul into each and every chord.

BRNDA, another DC local band, roused the crowd during their entire set, emitting sounds of funky and psychedelic rock. Each member took their turn igniting the crowd with their unique voice and lyrics. One of the guitarists hopped around the stage while singing and later took over the drums so another could do the same. The band ended their set with a bang, as the drummer, who was playing the tambourine, took off a symbol of the drum and started playing them together.

Overall this Saturday night at Songbyrd was an extraordinary profusion of talent. If you missed this show, be sure to catch the next one. It will undoubtedly be a night you will never forget.

Rauw Alejandro Transports DC Out Of This World During A Spectacular SATURNO Performance

On Sunday, March 19th, 2023, Grammy-nominated Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Rauw Alejandro made his DC debut with another sold-out indoor arena performance. To say Rauw’s performance was otherworldly would be an accurate yet casual understatement of the raw talent exhibited on stage that night. The modern king of reggaeton slammed the stage at full force with thousands of fans emitting excited shrieks and shrills. Between intricate visuals, elaborate choreography, and exquisite wardrobe choices, Rauw sent the stadium into cosmic orbit.

Rauw Alejandro performs at The Capital One Arena On March 19, 2023

Born Raúl Alejandro Ocasio Ruiz in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the artist is known for his deeply rooted hometown pride and contributions to the new age variation of Reggaeton. Beginning his music career in 2014, Rauw rapidly climbed industry charts, earning not one but three Grammy Award nominations in the past two years. With every new release, Rauw stretches the genre’s bounds, solidifying his position as a generational talent and inspiration for up-and-coming artists across the globe. His latest addition, SATURNO, further showcases his ability to reach across all elements of music and create fresh pieces of art.

Rauw Alejandro performs at The Capital One Arena On March 19, 2023

At the  Capitol One Arena, Rauw’s infectious sound and hypnotizing aura shone brightly as he electrified the stage with every track. Before the lights dimmed, a woman’s voice from the heavens warned the onset of the show, cueing a 90s electronic dance playlist. Then, as darkness filled the stadium the first track of the album SATURNO rang out. A thunderous roar from fans wrapped around the stage where dancers emerged. The mysterious voice played again, “Welcome to the Saturno Tour”. On that same note, fireworks exploded revealing Rauw center stage.

Within minutes of performing, fans from all sections were hurling their undergarments at Rauw, a common occurrence at his shows. Although many fell between the cracks of general admission, few landed on stage and whenever spotted, they would be picked up and swung to every note. A colossal amount of clothes were especially thrown during the popular PANTIES Y BRAIERES, proving its lyrics accurate.

At the onset of GATAS, up-and-coming Latin artist, Chris Palace appeared on stage provoking another round of screams from fans. The contrast in style between the two was apparent as Rauw, dressed in a sleek black jacket and pants, faced Palace in a sleeveless white shirt and cargo pants. Once Rauw briefly exited the stage, Palace went on to perform his own singles. Hailing from Silver Spring, Maryland, the DMV native returned to his roots during DCs performance, a monumental moment in Palace’s career.

As the evening continued, Rauw roused fans left and right with intoxicating lyrics and choreography. Suddenly, he tumbled backward, laying directly in the middle of the stage, a ring of green sparks encircling him. The brief rest period ceased with the onset of Party, a remix of fellow singer, Bad Bunny. Within seconds elated cries erupted, Puerto Rican flags waved, and Rauw was back on his feet, wooing fans once again.

Halfway through the show, American hip-hop dance crew, the Jabbawockeez flooded the stage inducing a wave of thrill. They performed a mix of billboard hits, including songs in both English and Spanish. Through elaborate moves, signature gestures, and complex formations, the Jabbawockeez held Rauw’s hype as he made his second costume change of the night.

Rauw Alejandro returned to earth but left the audience spinning with excitement.

Once reentering the stage in a new matching set, Rauw did not stay stationary for long. After a loud whooshing noise blared, stadium screens transformed into a rotating saucer, beaming a green light down on the singer’s entire body. Rauw's feet departed from the floor and soon he was levitating in the air, while simultaneously serenading his fans.

Though this was one of the many highlights of the night, it was far from the only one. Once returning to earth, he called on the audience in preparation for a couple’s dance-off. After plucking one couple from the crowd and later two more men and women, Rauw proceeded to explain the rules of the contest, the two would “perrear” and the best pair would win. Following one song of ferocious dancing, Rauw announced the winners, giving the first couple the crown.

Rauw Alejandro returned to earth but left the audience spinning with excitement.

Rauw Alejandro returned to earth but left the audience spinning with excitement.

Rauw Alejandro

A whopping 40 tracks perfectly blended together throughout the two-hour-long set, scouring the depths of the artist’s discography. Rauw’s extreme versatility and ranging talent were emphasized with the contrast between singles from Afrodisíaco (2020), Vice Versa (2021), and SATURNO (2023). Tracks such as Dile a Él and Pensándote portrayed more classic elements of reggaeton, whereas Sexo Virtual and Desenfocao from Vice Versa pull at new-generation elements. Teetering between sensual and uplifting moods, listeners went from stadium-shaking sways to tightly embracing one another and everything in between.

Rauw Alejandro

With the release of SATURNO, Rauw has invented yet another form of music, diving headfirst into rhythms of 80s and 90s electronic dance music. During VERDE MENTA synths permeated ears and drum kicks thumped chests as fans moved with the music. Rauw’s time machine of early elements of house and techno elements enchanted listeners and shifted them back three decades.

Not only was this blast to the past perceived through his enthralling hits but also within the entrancing visuals. Symbols of 90s tech wrapped around the overhead monitor in the form of different green line patterns and shapes. At one point, realistic cartoon characters resembling Bratz dolls filled the screens. One of the most classic moments of the night occurred during CORAZÓN DESPEINADO where the video game series Dance Dance Revolution moved with the beat of the song. Surprising the audience more, massive tangible planets circulated the venue during the last few tracks.

Despite his revolutionary album, Rauw's performance and production proved themselves spectacular, with audience members gazing in awe during every bit of the concert. With every unique single released so far, there is no doubt Rauw will continue to shatter the limits of multiple genres. If you missed him in DC this past weekend, make sure to catch him on one of his next dates!

It all started off on H Street in D.C., where founders CJ Johnson and Andrew Valenti were first introduced by their now manager, Claire Newbegin. Immediately after meeting, the two clicked, through both heart and sound, giving rise to the band Oh He Dead. The two are peas in a pod, sharing one of the most sweet, loving, and impenetrable friendships, while also perfectly harmonizing on just about any song. A little later down the road, guitarist Alex Salser, drummer Adam Ashforth, keyboardist Piano Whitman, and bassist Richard Smith joined the pair, formulating an unstoppable force. The band’s DC origins play a major role in their music presence, pouring into every song.

“We wouldn't be able to do all this stuff if It wasn't for DC, and it's why we want to give back so much. We feel like we owe so much to the city,” says Valenti. DC is the glue that holds Oh He Dead together. Their pride in being a DC band shines bright, its flag even appearing in elements of their branding.

Though their hearts reside in DC, their latest single, California, takes place 3,000 miles away (though raised in DC, of course). Released at the beginning of this year, the single has already garnered a substantial buzz from fans across the country. The hip-shaking hit features unforgettable lyrics, paired with rhythmic beats and groovy guitar rifts. Californiais the type of track to have every member in the audience on their feet, swaying with every note.

The story of California’s emergence is almost as notable as the track itself. Inspired by a blogger’s remark to make previous single This Time Around more “poppy”, Johnson sat down and began crafting the captivating song. “She wrote it all in one night and I think it was inspired by her being angry at this blogger that told us we weren't poppy enough. She was like, ‘I'll show you’ and when we all heard it we were like ‘this is gold’,” says Valenti recounting the moment.

The band sees themselves playing this track at their next tour in California, which may be around the corner given their current trajectory. “I would love to do a big sized show in California where we're are playing the song because I feel like California would be a nice little groove for the Californians,” says Johnson.

In addition to this dazzling song, Oh He Dead has countless breathtaking singles in store for fans. Earlier this week, they dropped their latest video and entry for the Tiny Desk contest, showcasing their unreleased single, More Time. The upbeat and melodic track tells the sorrowful story of a person trying to move on from a past love but still being haunted by the relationship. Proven time and time again, the band can turn any subject into a hit, just like their name. Describing the song Valenti admits, “That's become one of our things- to write about a heavy topic, but make it funky, make it like groovy.”

Their next single is set to release at the beginning of next month, on April 6th. In the meantime, fans will have to navigate to YouTube to satiate their hunger for new Oh He Dead.  More Time will be the band’s first release off of their upcoming album, Pretty. Although nothing has been released about the album so far, both Valenti and Johnson claimed the ideal name for it should be “straight bangers”, giving fans a sneak peak at what to expect in the upcoming months.

Not only are these tracks traveling far but so is the band- literally. Currently, Oh He Dead is gearing up for a sprinkle of shows around the DC area (catch them while you can) and a few national appearances this summer. At the end of May, Oh He Dead will make their debut at Summer Camp Music Festival after performing at The Kreeger Museum on May 19th and DC Hill House on May 21st. In June, they will perform at three festivals, including Mulberry Music Festival on June 16, Peach Music Festival on June 29, and Brandi Carlile’s Out & About Festival on June 25.

Oh He Dead may be embarking on a national tour, but DC will always be their home. Not only is DC where the band officially formed, but it is where the heart of where their music lies. “There's a lot of artists that you know, get good in DC and then they run off to LA or New York or Nashville, and we don't we don't want to do that,” says Valenti. “We think it's really important to us to be a DC band and to bring DC music and our kind of brand to the world.”

Oh He Dead’s experiences within the city lit the flame that sparked their music career. According to the group, their fan base has been a major catalyst for their growth. “I feel like it's mostly the support from our DC fans that make us set better goals for ourselves and make us want to keep going,” Johnson reflects. “Without them, I don’t really think we would be where we are as far as playing music. It's been great being a DC band, being considered a DC band.”

Like birds of a feather, Oh He Dead and DC stick together. Be on the lookout for future releases from the band because they are on the horizon, drifting straight to shore.

Shadowgrass Set To Debut At Pearl Street Warehouse On May 7th, 2023

We are excited that Shadowgrass is coming to Pearl Street Warehouse on May 7th, 2023.

They may not be on your radar yet - but they should be!  We have watched this band from afar gain steam and gather momentum for some time.

In the summer of 2022, the band began to grab people’s attention by posting a series of Instagram reels showcasing their music. Six months later, they found themselves with 111,000 followers (and counting) and a growing fanbase.   Following their self-titled debut album release, they were featured on Spotify’s editorial playlists, “Bluegrass Covers,” “Grassroots,” and “Instrumental Bluegrass.

Since the summer of 2022, this band has continued to gain momentum, gain fans, and expand their reach beyond Western North Carolina.  Don't take our word for it, even Billy Strings recognized them and stopped to talk to them in an airport while on tour recently.  Only a few weeks ago, Jeremy Garrett of The Infamous Stringdusters announced he would launch a small solo tour featuring Shadowgrass!

Each of the band members grew up embracing and being influenced by traditional music, which heavily influenced their approach to music.  The band includes Kyser George (guitar), Luke Morris (mandolin),  Clay Russell (banjo), Evan Campfield (bass), and Madison Morris (fiddle).   With their fast picking and fresh arrangements, Shadowgrass is moving forward in the bluegrass genre by incorporating each member’s varied influences into a fresh project that branches outside the bounds of traditional music while maintaining traditional instrumentation.  All of the members are award-winning musicians. ShadowGrass is striving to be the next torchbearers to carry on bluegrass music to future generations.  Their foot-tapping music and charming personalities continue to draw a crowd and gain encouraging fans with each new place they visit.

We are certainly looking forward to their first visit to Washington, DC, and we are certain it will not be their last visit either.

Colony House performs at the 9:30 Club on March 5, 2023

Colony House Shakes Fans’ Ears, Eyes, and Hearts to Their Core During DC Show

On the night of Sunday, March 5, fans wrapped around the block of the 9:30 Club. Itching to get inside, hollers of excitement erupted between groups as they awaited entrance into the venue. Anticipation filled the air as the line slowly lurched forward, stepping closer and closer to the moment Colony House would take the stage.

Hailing from Franklin, Tennesse, Colony House has been making massive waves in the music industry, both literally and metaphorically with the release of their latest album The Cannonballers. Known for their infectious sound, captivating lyrics, and entertaining shows, Colony House was fully prepared to set the stage on fire. Following the band’s smooth string of tours across southern parts of the U.S., Colony House’s long-awaited show finally arrived to satisfy supporters. Yet, their dazzling performance in D.C. did everything but quench fans’ thirst for more.

An hour after doors opened their arms to eager fans, the lights dimmed for opening act, Little Image, to make their D.C. debut. Little Image primed the crowd with exhilarating energy, provoking further anticipation for Colony House’s set. At one point, the drummer, Troy Bruner, even lept into the crowd landing on a wave of people who held him up while lead singer, Jackson Simmers, carried out the rest of the drum solo.

After a brief intermission filled with classic surf rock hits, Colony House’s drummer, Will Chapman, appeared on an elevated platform under the bright white lights, prompting thunderous roars from the audience. Suddenly, a switch flipped, illuminating the cannonballer boy backdrop, and thus appeared lead singer, Caleb Chapman, guitarist Scott Mills, and bassist Parke Cottrel, opening with Landlocked Surf Rock.

Within seconds of the first song, fans were already bobbing their heads and bodies up and down to the beat of the drums. From the bottom of the pit to the edges of the balcony, echoes of pure joy and reiterations of lyrics flooded the venue. Leaning on the edge of the stage was lead singer Caleb Chapman, who quickly darted into the pit. The crowd grew wild with exuberance as Caleb sang Would Ya Could Ya face-to-face with fans, even putting his arm around some. Little did fans know he would be back inside the crowd two more times before the night was over.

After making his way back to the stage, the band erupted in passion performing Sihouettes, followed by heartfelt single, Learning How to Love. Caleb then took to the microphone shouting proudly, “DC what’s up?” Elicit exclamations immediately arose from fans.

“We’ve been playing this city for a long time and always dreamed about playing at the 9:30 Club. The 9:30 Club is a very special place where we’ve watched some of our favorite bands perform,” said Caleb, sharing this monumental moment with the audience. “To sing our songs feels very special.”

Smiles illuminated the room. The band geared up to play Trying to Survive and although this was Caleb’s first time playing it live on the backup acoustic guitar, the song sounded phenomenal. Next up were four singles from the new album, Where I’m From, Man on the Run, Don’t Give Up On Me, and One of Those Days. Fans switched from swaying back and forth in waves to shaking the venue with their jumps.

Shifting gears to a softer note, Caleb was brought another acoustic guitar to share a warm and tender between him and the audience while performing one of their first singles, Moving Forward. Toward the end of the song, the rest of Colony House emerged from backstage, followed by members of Little Image, embracing each other in a harmonious group hug.

When it came time to play 2:20 listeners were surprised by Colony House’s notion to choose an audience member to perform the track. A young man holding a sign was plucked from the crowd and pulled on stage. Shredding back to back with guitarist and bassist, he murdered the guitar portion of the song with a Colony House pic in hand. Caleb wrapped up with the final guitar solo, giving another shout-out to his fan.

Colony House’s loving, compassionate, and warmhearted aura was further displayed by their effort to urge fans to contribute to their fund for crucial causes. On their website, fans can find a link to “exist for good” which provides a platform for people to donate five dollars a month to aid the people of Syria and Turkey amid the looming crisis.

After performing the charming single, Do You Ever Feel, the band said a brief goodbye to the audience, leaving listeners hanging on the edge of their stances. Desperate cries surfaced as fans begged for more. Their calls were soon answered as Colony House appeared once more to play their debut single, Cannonballers. The concert came to a close with the long-awaited performance of their highest streaming hit, You Know It.

Not only did Colony House shake fans to their core with their electrifying presence, but with their down-to-earth and loving persona. By just looking at the unique setup of the stage, audience members could tell this was not their average concert. The immense effort Colony House places into their shows is explicit. Their elaborate arrangements paired with authentic, captivating performances will propel them to even greater highs. Don’t miss your next chance to watch Colony House live, to see one of the most astonishing performances.

Colony House had one of the most electrifying and energetic shows we have seen at the 9:30 Club in quite some time

The Harpa - Reykjavik, Iceland
Features, Venue Reviews

Destination Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland has been a red-hot tourist destination for several years now. Everyone has been visiting Iceland, and for very good reason - this is a magical country filled with landscapes and experiences that cannot be found anywhere else.

Icelandic music has been at the forefront of the world stage for many years, including Bjork, Sigur Ros, Asgeir, Of Monsters Of Men, and Kaleo. It is not just the Icelandic musicians that are red hot right now but also Iceland's music scene.

Since 1999, Iceland has played host to the Iceland Airwaves Music Festival, which is held each November. This festival is so popular that Iceland Air has built travel packages based around this festival. In addition, Iceland also used to play host to the Secret Solstice music festival that featured 72 hours of music, nature, and midnight sun.

This musical momentum has caught the eye of international musicians and, more recently, American artists. In 2022, Umphrey's McGee held their Röckjavik spectacular. In 2023, Wilco, The Disco Biscuits,  Greensky Bluegrass, Elvis Costello, and Pavement, will make the journey over to Reykjavik to hold multi-day performances at the Harpa and other venues throughout the city.

With that much momentum, we wanted to share some of our knowledge and first-hand experiences in Iceland that will familiarize you with Iceland and, in particular, Reykjavik.

Basics

This article is not meant to be a comprehensive guide to Iceland.  It is intended for music lovers who want to go see an Icelandic music festival or destination concert in Iceland and want to have some basic information about Iceland and some tips.  When you arrive at 6:30 AM at Keflavík that first morning, find yourself downtown by 9 AM and need some food and activities while you wait for your hotel or AirBnB to be available at 3 PM - we got you covered.

This country is absolutely stunning, the people are amazing, the food is delicious, and the landscape is unimaginably gorgeous.  We hope you enjoy your stay in Iceland for an incredible music experience, and we hope that some of our travel tips make your trip that much more special.  We know that Reykjavík is just but a small part of Iceland, and we encourage you to visit all corners of this remarkable country.

Travel Books

We cannot praise the Lonely Planet Iceland travel book enough.  This is filled with many many fun facts and is truly a pleasure to read.  It gives great anecdotes and entertains you much more than some of the other “dry” travel guides.

Weather

There is no such thing as bad weather in Iceland —only bad clothing choices.

Iceland has a lot of weather - sun, rain, wind, snow - and sometimes all in one day. It changes a lot, so if you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes because it will likely change again. About that wind - it can get intense, so don’t bother with an umbrella. The locals don’t carry them because the wind tends to destroy umbrellas. We recommend you have a jacket with a hood instead

Food

What Food is Iceland Known For:

  • Skyr / Icelandic Yogurt
  • Fish Soup
  • Lamb/meat Soup
  • Plokkfiskur (or Plokkari) - Cod and mashed potatoes in a cream sauce.  This is both hearty and comforting and should be experienced.  This is not served at every restaurant, but it is truly worth trying.

Food is very, very expensive. For example: a hamburger can cost $20, a steak can cost $40, and an appetizer alone can cost $20.

We have a few suggestions, so you don't have food anxiety and sticker shock throughout your stay:

  • If your hotel has breakfast included, then we recommend eating a hearty breakfast.
  • If you really need a hot meal, we suggest that anywhere you go, order fish soup. This is a hot and usually hearty meal. It is also usually the cheapest thing on the menu and costs anywhere between $15-$20.
  • We tend to like having a snack during the day, like a small bag of trail mix or dried fruit.  Although you should try the local pastries. chocolates, and hot dogs, among other things, we tend to bring some of our own snacks.  Before you depart for Iceland, go to a Trader Joe’s or equivalent and stock up on snacks and protein bars or your favorite road trip foods.  Just NO fresh fruit, meat, or dairy - you won’t be able to get into the country with those.  (Check here to see what you can and cannot bring to Iceland.)

Alcohol

There is really so much to see and do in Iceland.  Not only will the scenery take your breath away, but so will some of the prices and nuances of alcohol in Iceland.  Before you go to a bar and are shellshocked we wanted to prepare you for this aspect of your visit.

Beer only became legal in Iceland in 1989 and grocery and convenience stores only have beer with a 2-4% alcohol content. If you want beer containing over with over 4% alcohol content or you don't want to go to a bar where a beer or or cocktail costs $9-19  (and up), then you can always go to the state-run liquor store,Vin Budin.  Beers there cost only about $3-6 dollars per beer.  There is also hard liquor for sale at the Vin Budin for prices significantly higher than you can find at home.

ProTips:

  • If alcohol is important to you, buy what you like at the duty free shop at the airport when you arrive.  The store and selection is huge, and conveniently walk through it on the way to the baggage claim carousels.  So, something to do while you wait for your luggage.
  • The Icelandic people take their happy hours VERY seriously.  This is the one time of day that they can get their alcohol cheaper!  There are even apps such as ‘Appy Hour’ to locate the nearest or best happy hours!  Happy hours tend to start earlier there - think 4pm.
  • Be sure your drink is part of the happy hour.  There is nothing more disappointing than finding out your $6 beer turns out to be $18.

Vin Budin

This is the state run liquor store and is the only place you can purchase liquor outside of a bar or restaurant.  Stores in Reykjavik are usually open for long periods during the day and are closed on Sundays.  Please do check hours before going because they traditionally are open between 11 AM and 6-7 PM.  (The Vin Budin in the heart of downtown is located at Austurstræti 10a.

Getting From / To The Airport

Getting From / To

 The Airport

Keflavík Airport is a forty-five minute drive from the airport to downtown Reykjavik.  Depending on the number of people traveling, a cab could make financial sense.  However, most people use the buses to commute from the airport to downtown Reykjavik.

Flybus (Cheaper Option)

You can book online for seats on a large bus that will take you to the main bus terminal.  You will then transfer to a smaller shuttle bus that will take you directly to your hotel.  You’ll do the same in reverse to go back to the airport.  The shuttle will pick you up at the hotel and take you to the bus depot, then big bus back to the airport.  (Large buses aren’t allowed on Reykjavik’s downtown streets.)  This is a good option - particularly for arrivals, when you may feel like you have more time to spare.  You can’t check into your hotel until the afternoon, anyway.)  On the return, you may find that the extra time needed for the pickup and transfer eats into your final vacation moments.

Airport Direct (More Expensive Option)

We really like Airport Direct's Premium Option.  You get into a small shuttle van that holds eight passengers and can take you directly to your hotel.  This door-to-door service without transfers in a smaller and more personable van might be just what you need after your red eye flight to Iceland.

What To Bring

While everyone is different and has their travel essentials, we have some recommendations based on our travels to Iceland.

  • Cash - You likely won’t need it.  Almost everyone takes credit cards.  If you want Icelandic krona, use an ATM when you get there.
  • Credit Cards - If you can, know the PIN to your credit card.   The majority of the time, swiping or card + signature work just fine.  However, if you are renting a car, knowing your PIN may come in handy.  This is the only kind of card that will work in many gas pumps around the country.

We have some recommendations on what you should pack when traveling to Iceland.

Clothes

Make sure to bring the following, even in summer.

  • You will want to pack a windproof and waterproof jacket.  The wind in Iceland tends to rip right through traditional jackets.
  • Wool sweater/heavy sweater.
  • Hat
  • Hiking Boots/closed-toe, waterproof shoes with good tread
  • Sunglasses or a hat with a brim.  We have found that being at 66 degrees North the sun can be a bit harsher on the eyes than in the United States.  You may consider bringing something for your eyes.

We also recommend purchasing some Icewear clothing or better yet, go to The Handknitting Association of Iceland located on Skólavörðustígur 19, to shop for some local hand-knitted clothing.  When returning home you may just find that your woolen Icelandic Loapeysa is the warmest item of clothing you now own - Icelandic clothing has evolved over the centuries to keep people warm and if it can keep you warm in Iceland it can keep you warm at home!

Medicine

Iceland is not like America.  You are not going to have 24 hour pharmacies except in Reykjavik and even there you will only find one or two all night pharmacies. Supermarkets don’t sell the variety of over the counter medicines that Americans are used to finding at home.  Pharmacies are more like banks - limited days and hours.

Make sure to bring all medicines and for that matter medicines that you think you may need in a pinch.  Think about bringing emergency items such as temporary crown glue and monistat.   As summed up so well in one online blog:

Okay, this next step is really, really important. It is so difficult to buy over the counter medication in Iceland. When you walk in to like Walmart or a Walgreens or CVS or Target in the US, then you can buy cold medicine and Ibuprofen and decongestant and basically almost anything that you would need. This is not the case in Iceland. That stuff is behind the counter, and I know a lot of times when you’re traveling, you’re feeling a little run down, or you pick up a cold, and you just want to run to the pharmacy and grab a decongestant. Mm-mm, it’s not going to happen. This is so important. I always recommend to just bring your own prescriptions, medications, headache medicine, anything that you could possibly imagine needing when you are on your trip, because it’s really hard to get that stuff in Iceland.

Reykjavik

Most music festivals and destination events take place in Iceland's capital - Reykjavik and that is why we are focusing on this city.  Approximately 65% of Iceland's total population lives in Reykjavik and surrounding cities.  Although most of what we discuss happens in "The 101" or downtown Reykjavik (and the downtown zip code number) - there are stunning and amazing parts of the city beyond "The 101" with incredible walks along the harbors, stunning natural gardens, and breathtaking museums.  This guide can hopefully help you gain your bearings and provide some useful tips and recommendations for your first stay in Reykjavik.

Bathrooms

For a nice bathroom, you can always go to the Harpa. We also suggest the Lebowski Bar on Laugavegur 20a.  Restrooms can be found on the lower level of each of these recommended destinations.  At the Lebowski Bar the restrooms are adorned with humorous paintings of all of The Big Lebowski’s main characters.  Come for the bathrooms, stay for the White Russains.

Coffee

Reykjavík Roasters

There are quite a number of coffee shops in Reykjavik.  However, we recommend Reykjavik Roasters located at Kárastígur 1.  This is one of our favorite casual coffee shops in all of Iceland. and is just a few blocks off of the main street in downtown Reykjavik.

More options that we have enjoyed include:

Record Shops

12 Tónar

12 Tonar Records

This is our favorite record shop in Reykjavik and we really appreciate their selection and staff.  The staff is extremely personable and if you want to listen to an album before buying it they will sit you down with a portable CD player and let you listen to something before you buy it.  Recently 12 Tonar put a full service bar and coffee shop in the back of the shop so you can purchase something to drink while you browse and listen to music.

Food

As we mentioned earlier, food is extremely expensive.  Here are just a few places we can recommend in downtown Reykjavík.  In addition to our recommendations you can find a guide to Vegan and Vegetarian food options.

Sandholt Bakery

Sandholt Bakery (Breakfast/Lunch)

This bakery is on the main strip in downtown Reykjavik and has sit down and take away options.  In fact, their sandwiches are some of the best we have ever had and Sandholt has  become a near daily stop for us.  New sandwiches go into rotation every day including vegetarian and pescatarian options.

Sandholt is one of the only places open in the early morning.  If you’re arriving in Reykjavik in the early morning and you can’t get into your hotel room, Sandholt is a good spot to get a coffee and/or breakfast.  You can wait in line to get a table for sit-down service.  (There is always a wait.)  If you’re only looking for takeaway, ignore the line and go straight to the counter.  People don’t often realize there are two  lines, but now you’re in the know.   There are picnic tables around the corner, through the alley entrance to the hotel next door, where you can sit and eat.

Braud & Co

Brauð & Co (Breakfast / Lunch)

Braud is a staple for anyone in Reykjavik.  We love their bread and baked goods.  However one items holds a special place in your heart  - their Pretzel Croissants are magical and should be tried.

Brikk (Breakfast / Lunch)

This is another breakfast stop that we just love.  This is just a little south of the old harbor but well worth the walk.  When you go in there you can first pick one of their fresh breads and then pick one or more small spreads.  We thoroughly enjoyed ordering a coffee and experiencing a breakfast like we never had it before. A spectacular way to spend a morning in Reykjavík.

Ramen Momo

Ramen Moma (Lunch / Dinner) $$

This is seriously some very very good soup!  Located only a few blocks West of the Harpa (towards the old Harbor).  You can get vegetarian broths and also choose between Ramen and Udon noodles

Reykjavik Fish Restaurant

Reykjavik Fish & Chips (Lunch / Dinner) $$

If you are looking for some delicious and locally sourced fish and chips, plokkari, and burgers, then look no further than this Reykjavik institution.  In addition to meat based meals there are vegetarian burgers available.

Valdis Ice Cream

Valdis (Ice Cream) $

This is a wonderful ice cream chain in Reykjavik.  The flavors change every day and are really great.  It may be cold in Iceland, but they still love their ice cream year round.  There are two locations - one in the Grandi neighborhood, just beyond the old marina and the other central in downtown.  The two locations don’t always have the same flavors on the same day so you will just have to stop by each location and try these unique flavors for yourself.

Cafe Babalu (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner / Snack)  $

We enjoyed this casual, low-key, and eclectic cafe. It is a wonderful cafe where you can sit down and have a coffee prep soup or grilled cheese sandwich. We recommend this cafe for some casual downtime.

Baejarins Beztu Pylsur

Baejarins Beztu Pylsur (Lunch / Dinner / Snack)  $

This is a famous if not legendary hot dog stand in Reykjavik that has been on every travel show.  Get one with “everything”.  If you really enjoy this hot dog stand, go to a grocery store where you can bring home some of the unique mustard to use at home.

Kafe Loki (Lunch / Dinner / Deserts) $$

Located across the street from Hallgrímskirkja church in downtown Reykjavik you will find Kaffi Loki.  This is a traditional Icelandic home style restaurant serving classic Icelandic cuisine.  Truly a delicious and unpretentious restaurant.  If you want to try some of their home made Rye Bread Ice Cream for take away we wouldn't blame you.

Hlemmur Food Hall

Hlemmur Food Hall (Lunch / Dinner / Late Night) $-$$

Hlemmur Food Hall stands where a bus terminal once stood and has now it has been transformed into a fantastic food hall.  Over the years the vendors have changed, however the quality and diversity of choices remains consistent and wonderful.  We would suggest going here if your group has diverse tastes and cannot decide on one particular type of food or you want a greater variety of food choices.

ROK (Lunch / Dinner) $$$

This is a wonderful place to eat, but expensive enough where you may want to save this for your last meal. This is right opposite the big church in Reykjavik, the Hallgrímskirkja.  Look for the turf-covered roof.

Vínbúðin (Vinbudin)

Grocery Shopping

There are two grocery stores in the downtown area that are both within easy walking distance of most hotels - Bonus, a fairly bare-bones option but has everything you need, and Kronan, which is more mid-range.

PROTIP:  Go into the supermarket and buy some Skyr (Icelandic Yogurt).  If you thought that the Skyr was good in North America then you are going to be delighted with the flavors that are available in Iceland.

Outside of Reykjavík

If you’re hitting the road, restaurants are more plentiful now, and gas stations always have food.  Depending on your traveling style, there’s a lot to see and explore in Iceland, and making lunch in the car may be a better way to go instead of sitting in a restaurant.   For this reason, we recommend that you bring an insulated supermarket bag and an unfrozen ice pack.  Bring the unfrozen ice pack if your lodging has a refrigerator.  Having an insulated bag or ice pack will allow you to keep any refrigerated goods you buy in an Icelandic grocery store a little longer.  Ice packs are easily packed in your check-in luggage and can keep you making the most out of your daylight hours in Iceland.

Tourism About Town

In addition to walking the streets of Reykjavik and taking in the sights, we wanted to point out a few things to see or recommended tour companies.

Harpa

Located downtown and on the water is the majestic multi-purpose concert hall Harpa.   The hall hosts exhibitions, concerts, cultural events, and festivals such as The Iceland Airwaves Music Festival. The Harpa is the home of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and the offices of the Icelandic Opera.

Wildlife & Nature

You can take a boat right from the harbor of downtown to see whales. puffins or view the Northern Lights.

For puffins, it is a thirty-minute boat ride to an island outside of downtown on a small island in the bay.  We recommend the following tour companies:

Northern Lights can be quite elusive.  Sometimes they appear out of thin air, and sometimes they remain covered by clouds.  Have no fear; Iceland has a dedicated website that helps forecast the Northern Lights.

Spas

Sky Lagoon

If you really need a spa day or feel like you need to recover after a multi-day concert or music festival then we recommend you try out the Sky Lagoon.  It is only minutes away from downtown Reykjavik and accessible by car, taxi, or bus.  This spa opened in 2021, and we have heard nothing but great things about this place.

Tour Companies

All tour companies offer similar packages, eg. Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon, Fridheimar greenhouse.  These can be easily booked online or stopping into a tourist office along Laugavegur.  We have tried several tour companies and have nothing but good things to say about Reykjavik Excursions and East West.   Look at the next section where we discuss some of these destinations

Beyond Reykjavik

Besides what we have outlined below, you can visit Must See Iceland for year-round experiences of activities to do in Iceland.  Iceland really has something for everyone - and some mind-blowing experiences that you can only find in Iceland.

Blue Lagoon

Everyone goes to the Blue Lagoon.  If this is your first time in Iceland or the entrance fee was included as part of your tour package then we recommend you get to experience it.  This is, however filled to the brim with tourists and lacks any of the laid-back comforts of other spas and hot pots.  If you are only day-tripping from Reykjavik, this is a great geothermal hotspot to luxuriate in.   Be warned, if this is not included in your tour package then you may find that it is quite expensive as an ala cart visit.

ProTip:  Bring your own towel.  The nature baths, including the Blue Lagoon will charge you for use of a towel or towels simply won’t be made available.

Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is just 25 miles outside of Reykjavik and is worth the visit.  There are a multitude of things to see just a short drive from downtown Reykjavik and almost every tour company has a Golden Circle tour package.  You can visit Thingvellir for great hikes and learn about some of Icelands history.  Visit Geysir, after which all others geysers are named for.  Visit the breathtaking waterfall Gullfoss.

HOT POTS, Spas, and Pools

Most Golden Circle tours include a stop at a geothermal spa (hot pot gone fancy).  Options include:  Krauma, Fontana, and the Secret Lagoon.  Hot pots can also be found randomly on the side of the road.  Some are naturally occurring streams, others are basic pools with huts for changing clothes.  Bring your own towel!

Icelanders take their swimming and hot pot/spa time seriously.  None of these spas or local pools are chlorinated so the pre-pool protocol is important.  Pool goers are expected to shower naked, THEN put on their bathing suits.  No dirty bodies in the clean water.

Pro Tip for Women:  If you plan on visiting more than one spa or hot pot, bring a bikini - even if you don’t think you have a “bikini body”.  Embrace the body positivity and it’s far easier putting a two-piece on a wet body, than a one-piece.

Top 30 Hot Springs and Swimming Pools in Iceland

Fridheimar

Have you ever been out for a meal in a greenhouse? This greenhouse is fully functioning and produces an exceptional amount of locally grown tomatoes in Iceland.  There is truly no other experience than dining among tens of thousands of tomatoes growing all around you.  We recommend going and enjoying a unique food experience at this restaurant - the tomato soup is about as amazing as it comes.

 Krýsuvík

There is a seriously amazing geothermal mud area near the blue lagoon.  It has bubbling 400-degree mud.  This destination makes you feel like you are on another planet and looks like something out of a movie, and smells unworldly.  It is one of those places that no one tells you about, but we find is worth the visit.

Snaefellsness Peninsula

This is a short drive north of Reykjavik, and there are many day tours here.  The peninsula is dotted with waterfalls, the iconic Black Church at Budir, and of course Kirkjufell, an iconic mountain that gained fame for its role in Game of Thrones.
