ITOTA's Last Stand
Concert Reviews

IOTA’s Last Stand – The Last IOTA Jam – July 18, 2017

The e-mails and text messages came early yesterday, "You have to come out to IOTA's tonight!  This is the last IOTA Jam night!"  For the past year, every Tuesday night people have made the trek to the IOTA Club & Cafe in Clarendon with their music gear in hand, hoping to jam with fellow musicians.  In fact, one musician last night said that he drives from Haymarket, Virginia to IOTA's on a weekly basis, just to be able to play with fellow musicians, a journey of 30-40 miles.

For months now rumors filled the local Washington, D.C. music scene about the demise of this legendary music venue. This venue was once surrounded by empty car parking lots, so much so, that people once referred to this part of Arlington as "Car-lington." Arlington has seen gentrification for several decades and several old favorites, such as the original Bardo Rodeo, have since been plowed under and made way for a revitalized and gentrified Arlington.  According to confirmed sources, IOTA will be closing it's doors in two months time and will be honoring all existing bookings.  As the house band took the stage it was announced that "Tonight is a celebration!  We can talk about all that sappy stuff later, but tonight is a celebration!"  Fans and musicians were quietly assured that a new space is being sought and that jam night will continue in the future.

On a normal Tuesday night a small handful of locals and musicians gather to catch a bite to eat, share a drink, enjoy the music and share stories.  Tonight however, IOTA's was filled to a capacity crowd.  Local music heroes such as members of Moogatu, Of Tomorrow, and Better off Dead filled the audience.

The rules of the open jam are simple: musicians of all skill levels place their names into a cup labeled with a specific instrument and multiple times a night a new supergroup jam band is assembled from picking names out of a series of cups at random.  Musicians wandered into the venue with guitars on their backs, drumsticks sticking out of their back pockets, and instrument cases in tow; and anxiously wait in the audience for their name to be picked.  Last night, musicians knew that this was one of their last chances to perform at IOTA, especially to a capacity crowd. So much so, that it reminded several fans of "The Claw Scene" from Pixar's Toy Story.

As each musician got off stage, a huge smile appeared on their face as they had been chosen and were so grateful for the opportunity.

Throughout the night the audience was treated to exceptional jams by the house band, local musicians, and at 10:15 p.m. Of Tomorrow took the stage.  At 11:30 p.m.  the audience was told "Tonight we are going late!", and by 12:30 p.m. "Tonight is not done! Let's get this party started!"

At a quarter to 1:00 a.m. members of DC Music Review left the venue, while the street was still packed with musicians and concert goers alike.  As we walked away, you could still hear the ambient sounds of music reflecting off of nearby buildings, which filled the streets with a reminder of the concert taking place.  IOTA may have had it's last jam, but it certainly did not go silently into the night.

DeadPhish Orchestra Performs at Gypsy Sally’s on July 6, 2017

In the second week of July, music fans find themselves in a delightful situation.  Music lovers are halfway between Dead & Company's Summer Tour closer and Phish's Baker's Dozen residency at Madison Square Garden.   It is only fitting that fans get to experience the music of both music legends played side by side in a single performance.

DeadPhish Orchestra, hailing from Boulder, Colorado, visited Gypsy Sally's on Thursday evening to deliver an outstanding evening of Phish and The Grateful Dead. For everyone in attendance, the band truly lived up to their tagline.

A seamless web of Grateful Dead & Phish to Split Open & Melt Your Face

Washington, DC was lucky enough to have DeadPhish Orchestra visit Gypsy Sally's once again during one of their weekend mini-tours.  The band seamlessly oscillated and flawlessly segued from the music of one band to the other.

DeadPhish Orchestra consists of Chris Sheldon on Drums, Paul Murin on Guitar, Brian Adams on Bass,  and Ted Tilton on Keyboards.  All members of the band perform vocals and Ted Tilton had stellar vocal "double duty" as Jerry Garcia in The Grateful Dead songs, as well as, Page MConnell for the Phish tributes.  Familiar to fans of both bands, band members looked to one another throughout the night, playing off one another and enjoying a stellar night of jamming in front of an energetic audience.

The band kept audience members guessing throughout the evening, "What is the next song going to be? What would best song to follow up this song with?"  The audience kept on guessing and was overjoyed as one song flowed into another.

Venue Review: Ardmore Music Hall – Ardmore, PA

Along the Northeast Megalopolis exists a silk road of music venues.  One venue that shines brightly is the Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, PA.  This venue is found along the quaint streets of Historic Downtown Ardmore, just to the west of downtown Philadelphia.

Ardmore Music Hall

Ardmore Music Hall

23 Lancaster Ave

Ardmore, PA 19003

Capacity: 600

Music fans have undoubtedly seen this venue listed as a tour stop on many a tour schedule. This venue is frequently a stop on a tour going through the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD metro area.

Those that live close to the venue cherish it and always tell other concert goers from outside of the greater Philadelphia how special this venue is, and why they should experience it for themselves.  Many individuals from around the Washington/Baltimore area have heard about this great music hall in the north but contemplate if they should make the journey to experience The Ardmore Music Hall for themselves.   DC Music Review has heard of this venue so much that we had to make the pilgrimage to this venue ourselves to see what it is all about, and if whether it is worth the journey.

Simply put, the pilgrimage to this venue is worth the visit!

Why You Should Go

Overall Concert Experience

The venue has a modest facade on Lancaster Avenue with only a few neon musical notes on the outside to give a hint at the fantastic performance space inside. Once you step through the entrance, you see a carefully composed two-story venue, which holds less than a thousand people, with areas set aside for both standing and seated concert experiences. The sound system and lighting systems are both top notch and you will rarely, if ever, find a bad sound location.

The venue has paid particular attention to ensure that almost every place inside has an unobstructed view and crisp sound. If you prefer a seated concert experience look no further than the back of the main space to sit down and have a clear view of the performance.

You will not miss a second of any performance even at the far end of the bar as it was designed for a concert goer in mind. The accompanying photo was taken from the far side of the bar, and as you can tell, the stage is unobstructed and allows an individual to take in the full experience, even when waiting for a drink by the bar.

Quality of Acts

The quality of the acts that pass through The Ardmore Music Hall is quite simply staggering and it is because of the quality of this venue. If an artist is playing here, it is because they have earned the right to play here.
There are occasions where an artist is doing a mini-tour with only a few shows, and they choose to play at The Ardmore Music Hall. On other occasions an major artist, such as the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, will perform a multi-night run at this venue.

If the artist only comes as far South as The Ardmore Music Hall, take the road trip and see them at The Ardmore Music Hall!

Special Productions

The Ardmore Music Hall is genuinely second to none when it comes to special musical events! Not only does this venue specialize in putting together amazing lineups, but they take pride in their production of the performance. There are concert posters available, big screen projections, and, on occasion, live streaming of the performances.

Ardmore takes huge pride in creating a spectacular concert experience. What a great light show above and to the side of the stage.

The Ardmore Music Hall makes a considerable effort in selecting and assembling astounding lineups to create exceptional concert experiences for their patrons. Here are just a few of the unique productions that The Ardmore Music Hall put together for the 2017 Summer. Each of these special productions look spectacular and worth the visit to this music hall. (We attended the Unlimited Devotion event, and that alone will bring us back to this venue for any further productions.)

Chrysalis at Symphony Woods
Venue Reviews

Venue Review – Chrysalis – An Intimate Look At the Chrysalis At Symphony Woods at Merriweather Post Pavillion – Columbia, MD

This new venue, rightfully named Chrysalis, will have a profound impact to the outdoor concert experience to the Washington, D.C. / Baltimore region. There has only been one other pavilion sized venue open in this region in the past forty years and it holds 25,000+ in Bristow, Virginia.

In 1967, Merrieweather Post Pavillion opened it's doors in Columbia, Maryland. In the fifty years since it has opened it has been the centerpiece of outdoor pavilion music for the Washington, D.C. / Baltimore Metropolitan area and has played host to both historic bands and historic concerts. It has played host to musical legends and giants including The Doors, The Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and the Grateful Dead,  It has also hosted countless music festivals and tributes including 25 years of the annual Capital Jazz Fest, The Merryland Music Festival, and Dear Jerry: Celebrating the Music of Jerry Garcia.

Fresh off a multi-million dollar facelift to celebrate it's 50th Anniversary, the Merriweather Post Pavillion created the Chrysalis at Symphony Woods. This new organic structure is nestled intimately into in the the picturesque landscape of the Merriweather Post Campus.  As you walk the perimeter of the venue you will notice towering neon green organic shapes peeking out from the lush forest foliage of Symphony Woods.  In fact, four thousand aluminum green tiles adorn this  structure structure reminding us of a green chameleon that tries to subtly blend into it's natural environment.  One cannot help but walk around the perimeter of this structure to take in the organic shapes and patterns as well as the way light reflects off the Chrysalis and it continues to re-blend itself into the woods with each footstep.

Chrysalis Peeking through the woods

While walking to the venue you cannot help but notice the Chrysalis peeking through the woods.

Chrysalis Peeking through the woods

While walking to the venue you cannot help but notice the Chrysalis peeking through the woods.

Whereas the Merriweather Post Pavillion has been designed to host audiences of nearly 20,000 people, the Chrysalis is a fraction of the size of it's sister venue and is located only a few hundred feet from the street. This band shell has a very modest footprint of only 5,000 square feet is approximately 110 feet wide and rises 52 feet into the air.  The  designers of this structure intended  it to act as a stage, a pavilion and a sculpture all in one. This new venue is meant to be enjoyed by everyone during the weekday and non-event days.  People can sit on the plush lawn in front of the bandshell and take in the weather and sounds of nature.

During larger festival events, such as the annual Capital Jazz Festival, the Chrysalis acts as an auxiliary viewing area where people feel free to picnic far away from the crowds of the main stages and can watch the event from a projected movie screen lowered from inside the bandshell.

We expect the pavilion to play host to only be a few thousand people.  Because the venue lies in an open field ad surrounded by woods, the capacity is limited, in part, to how and where the venue organizers place security fencing.

As day turns into night we expect the light show inside the bandshell will light up the area with the glow of an intimate and sparkling campfire  set in the woods.

The Chrysalis is a majestic green dragon spitting beautiful balls of light to illuminate an audience!

A view of the Chrysalis as a light show illuminates the audience.

The venue first center stage on July 22, 2017, when Greensky Bluegrass and Leftover Salmon christened the venue with its first major national touring music will take the stage.  Based on this beautiful venue and its location, many Greensky Bluegrass fans believe "Through the Trees" is sure to feature on their setlist for their performance.

Greensky Bluegrass & Leftover Salmon perform at the Chrysalis

Since the venue's opening, it has hosted some incredible performances including  Bully, Lord Huron, Annika Bennet, Surfaces, LANY, and Goose. Although this venue has not played host to as many performances as we would have hoped, each performance at this intimate venue has been truly memorable.  Just like the Merriweather Post Pavillion, we expect and look forward to a long and eventful history underneath this bandshell.

From the South of the Venue

From the South West (eg: Virginia / Rockville / NW DC)  We encourage you to take the Washington DC Beltway (I-495) and use exit 30A, taking US-29 approximately 25 miles north.  Taking exit 18B to Broken Land Parkway.  This route is more direct than I-95 and offers you more opportunities to stop for food, beverages, and gas along the way.

Parking

The first thing that you will notice about the venue is the parking.  Up until this year, parking was on a first come first serve basis and consisted of several very large fields around the venue.  This is no more.  When you purchase a ticket you must also select a parking lot in which to park.  When you get to the venue you will immediately notice signs for your assigned parking area.

Please refer to the following Map of the Merriweather Parking Map below.

How To Get to the Chrysalis

The Chrysalis lies to the south of the  Merriweather Post Pavillion, on Little Patuxent Highway and South Entrance Road.

At the time of this writing, the entrance to the Chrysalis is located at the Westside of the venue next to the white barn that lies closest to Little Patuxent Pkwy.

Note: Although the box office remains open before and during an event at the Chrysalis, the gates at the box office are not opened for Chrysalis events.

Merriweather Post Pavilions website sums it up as succinctly as possible:

Simply park the way you normally would for Merriweather shows and enter the venue through the regular Merriweather gates (don’t worry – our staff will direct you to Symphony Woods). Concessions will be available in the Woods and amenities like restrooms are just a quick stroll away. While the Chrysalis provides unique shows in the tranquil beauty amongst the trees, those in attendance won’t be roughing it by any means.

The Chrysalis is just down a small path from Merriweather Post Pavilion's East Entrance.

Only a minute away by car or a few minutes by foot is a relatively new Whole Foods grocery store.  This 50,000 square foot supermarket will have everything you need or forget about for your tailgate or lawn party.  This particular location has a particular emphasis on "to-go" stations intended for the pincers and venue crowd.

For those of us who have been going to Merriweather Post Pavillion for so many years, we may not have noticed this store that opened in 2014.  But now that you know about it, what a lifesaver it will become.

NOTE:  This store is particular about NO EVENT PARKING and enforces it.  Please park at the venue in your designated parking zone however tempting this offset option may seem to be.

Unlimited Devotion at The Ardmore Music Hall

The Birthday Boy celebrates his Birthday at The Ardmore Music Hall in style!

The Birthday Boy celebrates his Birthday at The Ardmore Music Hall in style!

The Ardmore Music Hall pulled out all the stops for their annual Unlimited Devotion held this year on June 9 and 10 in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. This event celebrated the 81st birthday of counter-culture legend Wavy Gravy and benefited not only the Rex Foundation, but also Wavy's Camp Winnarainbow.

The weekend was filled with a who's who of Grateful Dead influence musicians with Wavy Gravy himself present to take in the adulation of the musicians and the audience alike.  The line-up at times felt like a beautiful mashup of artists who had previously performed in the same line-up or had crossed paths with another artist in another band.  The intertwining of bands was amazing as you did not know where Ratdog began, Billy & The Kids ended, and how Further existed somewhere in between.

To say that The Ardmore Music Hall put on a great weekend is an understatement.  A supplemental projection show was brought in just for this event to add to the festivities and the second floor was filled with Scott Shapiro's Grateful Dead concert poster collection (The next day a poster Art Exhibit would be further set up).  The following day, in between performances, attendees were greeted to a full screening of the newly released Grateful Dead documentary, Long Strange Trip by Amir Bar-Lev & Martin Scorsese.

May we all raise a glass, or better yet a Wavy Clown Nose, and toast to Wavy Gravy and his health, and celebrate another year of beautiful music together.

If you were unable to attend this benefit or just want to learn more about the two great organizations that were benefited by this event please look at the links below:

James Brown Dance Party – 8×10 Club 03/31/17 Baltimore, MD

Very rarely have I seen a dance floor or concert venue shake as much as I did when the Chase Brothers brought the James Brown Dance Party to the 8x10 Club in Baltimore, MD.

In fact, the last time I recall an audience shaking a music venue to it's core was The Rolling Stones, Steel Wheel Tour, 1989 at Shea Stadium where the stadium swayed to the music.  Fast forward twenty some years, and the James Brown Dance Party brought their all star lineup to play tge godfather of Soul's greatest hits to the 8x10 Club in Baltimore, MD.

The James Brown Dance Party made the floorboards of the 8x10 Club in Baltimore shake up and down by several inches as the audience could not help but dance to the explosive music produced by the band. Hit after hit created a literal dance frenzy of energy and sincere enthusiasm by audience members both young and old.

Tonights performance featured, The Chase Brothers with Mousey Thompson (James Brown), Elise Testone (American Idol), Mark Ingraham (DJ Williams), Chris Bullock (Snarky Puppy), Adam Dotson (Rubblebucket) and Patrick Rainey (The Bridge).

Elise Testone, a vocal powerhouse, who has a dazzling array of  vocal range propelled her to be an American Idol finalist. Tonight she propelled the audience to new funky heights, delivering a very impressive performance which left the frenzied crowd wanting more.  Accompanying Adam Chase on drums was no other than Robert "Mousey" Thompson who manned the drums behind James Brown from 1993-2006.

While there was no known recording of tonights performance, you should listen to the performance the night before at the Brooklyn Bowl.

Performance Date:  2017-03-30

Venue Location: Brooklyn, NY

Tedeschi Trucks Performs at Warner Theatre

Once again Tedeschi Trucks visited The Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C. as is their Winter Tour Tradition.  Derek & Susan and their band certainly brought the heat to this run of shows as each night by song 2 they were operating like a V-8 engine firing on all cylinders, not skipping a beat.

A special and emotional treat was Susan Tedeschi's heartfelt tribute to George Harrison on February 25th,  on what would have been George's 73rd birthday.  George Harrison songs included Within Without You, Wah-Wah, and Something.  Many people left the concert on the 25th feeling like they checked something very special off their musical bucket list, a heartfelt and beautiful rendition of Something.
