Gender-Diverse Lineup to Feature National and Local Artists on July 26 and Pre-Fest Events from July 21-25.

The inaugural This Could Go Boom! Music + Culture Festival will take place on Saturday, July 26 at Bladensburg Waterfront Park and on stages across Hyattsville, Maryland. Headlining artists include Speedy Ortiz, River Shook, and Crys Matthews, as well as local performers. Streetcar 82 Brewing, Maryland Meadworks, and Sangfroid Distillery will host satellite stages with performances on the day of the festival. 

This Could Go Boom! (TCGB!) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission to empower and advocate for gender diverse marginalized musicians through community engagement and education to dismantle barriers, promote diversity, and ensure that everyone can express themselves and enjoy music without discrimination.  

“TCGB! is truly a grassroots effort. We were founded around a kitchen table where women and nonbinary musicians spoke freely about feeling defeated, harassed, left out, and manipulated by the industry. We put our feelings into action—350+ artists in paid performances, gallery talks, records released, and a skills-sharing program. TCGB! is truly grown from the ground up,” said Erin Frisby, co-founder of TCGB! and festival organizer. “We can't wait to see everyone at the inaugural festival because the way forward is through community. Join with these necessary and powerful voices of diverse experiences, connections and histories as we imagine an irresistible future.” 

“Before I ever knew how to write songs, I thought I was going to be a high school band director,” explains Americana artist and social justice music-maker Crys Matthews, a festival headliner. “And in band, as in any type of music, it's always sweeter with other voices present. Being part of a festival where this idea is not only understood, but that advocates loudly for diverse voices is so refreshing. As a woman who is also Black and a lesbian, I have worked hard to be comfortable enough in my skin to show up as my fullest self on and off stage. It means a lot to an artist like me when festival organizers see and celebrate my full humanity.” 

In addition to headlining artists, more than 35 local and regional artists will perform on four stages and at pre-fest events, showcasing the breadth of talent across the Washington, DC metro area. Performers will include 50 Foot Woman, Alena Ciera, Ammonite, Ari Voxx, Be Steadwell, Cynthia Marie, Flora and the Fauna, Kinda Evil, Lightmare, Mac N' Toss, More AM than FM, Neon Habits, Petrichor, and Witch Weather. 

Leading up to the main festival, pre-festival events will be held from July 21-25, 2025, including:  

• Open Mic Night at Denizens Brewing on July 21 at 7 p.m., hosted by Flowerbomb’s Abby Rasheed. FREE. RSVP on Facebook or Eventbrite.

• A Punk Show at Colmar Manor Community Center on July 24 from 7:00-11:00 p.m. with Professor Goldstein and other acts. FREE. RSVP on Facebook or Eventbrite. 
• A one-night-only revival of beloved DC spoken word series mothertongue at Joe’s Movement Emporium on July 25 from 7:00-9:30 p.m., featuring mothertongue co-founder Ruth Dickey. Music by Mya Byrne and Be Steadwell. Tickets available on Eventbrite. 

“As a trans woman in music, it’s often hard to get heard, and I’ve found myself bubbling under more often than not—so I’m excited as heck to get up to a full-on boil headlining at the inaugural TCGB! It’s important to champion undersung and overlooked voices in art—especially trans ones—not just for equity’s sake, but because our art can carry a gravitas of life lived in process and discovery; our personal tales are not niche; they are universal, and I’m thrilled that TCGB! recognizes that," said singer-songwriter Mya Bryne who is headlining both the mothertongue and Bushwick Book Club events leading up to TCGB! Fest. “We’re more than diversity quotas. We are diverse artists with diverse, relatable stories.” 

The festival will also feature a variety of vendors, community organizations, and food trucks, as well as family-friendly activities. 

The TCGB! Music + Culture Festival is funded in part by a grant from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority. "Maryland invests in cultural tourism through the Heritage Area program, and we're thrilled to see the program support a unique new cultural festival in Prince George's County,” said Meagan Baco, executive director of Anacostia Trails Heritage Area.

'Tis the season to start thinking of your favorite DMV music lovers, and we have one special gift that not only brings together some of our favorite local artists but also helps raise money to help provide help to others in our community.

Fourteen different Virginia artists have joined forces with cancer nonprofit The Nancy Langhorne Foundation to release XMAS in VA, a limited edition compilation record on the nonprofit’s label 12/23 Records. All proceeds will be donated to help provide free cancer screenings for the
underserved in the Hampton Roads and Richmond areas via EVMS Hopes Clinic and the Bon Secours Richmond Every Woman’s Life Program.

The record contains a mix of classic and original holiday tunes by some of Virginia’s best musical talent, including Andrew Randazzo (Butcher Brown), DJ Williams (DJ Williams Projekt, formerly guitarist of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe), Todd Herrington & Dusty Ray Simmons (Cris Jacobs Band), up and coming jam band favorite Kendall Street Company, Richmond singer/songwriter Deau Eyes, TheLifehacks, Prabir Menta, tan.gent, Kenneka Cook, Peter Pope, Ben White, Shera Shi, and Lena Klett.

From Simmons' funky original Wishlist, to Williams' acoustic take on Joy to the World. The record spans various genres, including rock, pop, country, jazz, funk, and more. Highlights include a live recording of The R4ND4ZZO BIGB4ND’s cover of Vince Guaraldi’s Skating from their 2017 show at the Vagabond in Richmond, eclectic covers like Shera Shi’s take on Cindy Lou Who’s Where Are You Christmas? from the Grinch, and Kendall Street Company’s Truckin’ Trees for Christmas by country musician Red Simpson, plus a very rockin’ and catchy tribute to the Elf on a Shelf by Norfolk’s TheLifeHacks.

 The release is limited to 500 copies and hand-numbered with album art by designer and illustrator Nate Cepis. A standard black vinyl option, a white vinyl variant, and a clear white splatter variant will be available.

The Nancy Langhorne Foundation and 12/23 Records might sound very familiar to those in the jam band community - in particular, Phish, Trey Anastasio, and Bill Kreutzmann.  In 2022, the foundation partnered with the late James Casey, the brilliant saxophonist most widely known for his association with Trey Anastasio Band and Billy & The Kids, to create a charity record. Casey passed away last year of colon cancer. 

This record is dedicated in James Casey's memory. We wish everyone in our cherished DMV community a very happy and especially healthy holiday season and new year.  We hope you find it in your musical heart to bring the joy of music to a loved one this season and help our community stay healthy.

Words Beats & Life, DC's longest-standing hip-hop-based arts educational nonprofit, will take over the National Mall on July 27th with its inaugural DMV Made festival.

This one-day extravaganza promises an exciting mix of music performances, dance, poetry, storytelling, interactive workshops, art, and health and wellness activities. Part of the national Arts for EveryBody campaign, DMV Made will showcase diverse musical acts like The Blackbyrds, The Chuck Brown Band, Sweet Honey In The Rock, Dupont Brass, Be'la Donna, Substantial, and Cryptid Summer, spanning genres from punk and go-go to rap, R&B, and choral.

DMV Made celebrates the creative contributions of natives from the Washington region and explores the area’s history and future. Through stages including a Performance Stage, Producer Stage, Family stage, Dance stage, and Storytelling & Poetry Pavillion, the audience can learn break dancing, experience African drumming, catch a puppet show, or watch six world-renowned muralists create live art.

“This festival is a testament to the art, music, and talent born out of this region, from the pioneering go-go rhythms of Chuck Brown to the profound poetry and storytelling that have shaped our culture, the DMV area has always been a wellspring of creativity and innovation," says Mazi Mutafa, Founder and Executive Director of Words Beats & Life. "We're excited to spend the day celebrating and educating festival-goers, igniting the spirit of creativity and wellness for everyone who joins us. This event is not just about showcasing our local talent; it’s about honoring the history and cultural significance of the DMV, and inspiring a renewed sense of local pride and community.”

The Dance stage includes acts like The Lion’s Den, Step Afrika!, Miss Chief Rocka, and the National Hand Dancers Association. The Family stage includes puppet shows, face painting, African drums, and juggling. World-renowned muralists Greg Deal, Cita Sadeli, Coby Kennedy, REI21, and Jamila Okubo will work on six live mural paintings on temporary walls to be donated to DC schools.

A diverse mix of paid and free programming will ensure something for everyone throughout the day, with events scattered across the lawn. The day will be filled with music thanks to house and hip-hop acts DJ Vico Vibes and DJ Rita Burns.

On Tuesday, March 5th, Power To The Patients held a special performance for invited health care advocates, healthcare professionals, and legislatures where they brought their message of making our healthcare system more honest, affordable, equitable, and accessible through real, upfront prices. 

Before Foo Fighters took the stage, Fat Joe, Chuck D, and Valerie June shared their personal stories about the fear and uncertainty we all face when hospitals and insurers hide their prices. That’s why they urged ALL Members of Congress to support the bipartisan Health Care PRICE Transparency Act 2.0, cosponsored by Senators Bernie Sanders and Mike Braun. The Senate bill builds on progress made by the House, and will protect all patients, workers, employers, unions, and consumers by empowering them with access to all upfront prices, receipts, and claims data to ensure billing integrity and avoid overcharges.

As Fat Joe exclaimed from the stage, “This is a catastrophe in America that cannot be swept under the rug… All we’re asking for is the prices. Estimates are bullsh*t. We want the prices.”   

 Despite recent polling that revealed 94% of Americans support systemwide healthcare price transparency, a new report found only 34.5% of hospitals in the U.S. are fully complying with the federal Hospital Price Transparency Rule. 

Dave Grohl dedicated "My Hero" to Chuck D from the stage late into the evening.  We truly feel that all the performers and speakers on stage and behind the scenes are our heroes.

We recognize that so long as mortality holds steady at 100% and we are all vulnerable to accidents and health issue we need to join with others and request that Congress acts NOW to strengthen and expand healthcare price transparency.  People should not be afraid to go to a doctor, afraid to go to a hospital, and terrifed of being admitted to a hospital where they may leave thousands of dollars in debt.  This means NO estimates, ALL real prices and receipts for care. Now, more than ever, Americans need financial certainty, integrity, and accountability in their healthcare.

Jam for Jodi is an organization started to help one of our DMV and music community family members.   If you’ve attended a show at Baltimore’s 8X10 Club in the last decade, chances are good you have encountered our friend Jodi. From working in the box office and behind the bar, to running the shows when the owners were out of town, to working with national acts like Cris Jacobs, Turkuaz, and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Jodi has been a true “Jill of All Trades” at the club, and a fixture in the Baltimore music community.  You may have also met Jodi working behind the scenes at festivals like The Ramble Festival, Charm City Bluegrass, Believe in Music, and the MoonRise Festival, artists, crew, and members of the music community always recognize Jodi and are always happy and grateful to see Jodi.

At thirteen Jodi was diagnosed with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys. There is no cure for this disease, and while medication is available, Jodi’s condition is too far along for any meds to help. This extremely painful condition makes even the simplest tasks difficult, and Jodi’s ability to work is severely limited. Jodi is the last living female from her mother’s side of the family; Her Mom, Aunt, Grandmother, and Great-Aunt have all passed away from this terrible, hereditary disease.

Now Jodi needs a kidney and we and others in the DMV Music Community are determined to help her find one.

For all the joy that Jodi gives the music community, it is now our turn to give her a little bit of that love back and learn a little bit more about Jodi.  Please take the time to watch the video, visit the website, and consider helping Jodi out. For the first three weeks of October, acclaimed music phenomenon Salaam Remi held his MuseZeum art pop-up in the nation’s capital. Hosted at Legacy DC, a dispensary, gallery, and street art shop, each hip-hop-centric piece proudly illuminate the genre’s 50th anniversary. Elevating staples like Marvin Gaye, Slick Rick, and more, each cross blend of music, art and technology highlights prominent music pioneers with authentic artistry. 

From producer to art curator, Salaam Remi has a long winded history of fostering the craft of billboard-charting artists. Working with critically acclaimed musicians such as Nas, Amy Winehouse, and Jazmine Sullivan, Remi has mastered the industry’s inner workings and become a dominate force in the scene. Now, Remi is furthering his reach by mixing visual mediums with his known audio presence. 

The fruition for each exhibit first came to life with Remi’s admiration for Slick Rick and other hip-hop trailblazers. Each unique art installation connects to Remi- from inspirations, to influences, to collaborations. On every art piece, Remi holds the title of canvas artist, even photographing one design featuring Nas. 

Immediately upon entrance, a MuseZeum team member greets you with a personal tour of each art instillation.  Paired with each visual component is an audio element, with speakers and bluetooth installed into each artwork. During the tour, a song by every artist is played at their respective canvas. Each speaker is discretely disguised into a sound system matching the artist’s style.

It sounds like your average modern art gallery, yet it is far from it. The curation of the exhibition is a collected effort by photographers, audio designers, painters, woodworkers, and more, who helped showcase of over 10 intricate canvases. Glazed in glittering reflective frames, every piece features an artistic twist of the music’s equivalent emotion. 

Accompanying the art is merchandise, featuring a wide array of sweatshirts. From artist faces to art prints, attendees can bring home a piece of the pop up with them. According to MuseZeum’s team, 40% of the profits from each sold item is donated to the artist involved. That means you, the artist, and Museum’s team all benefit from the market. 

Though rooted in Miami, Florida, Remi’s MuseZeum has traveled up the east coast, making its first appearance at Legacy New York. Imprinting on DC’s art and music scene, attendees gain a taste of authentic hip-hop culture from an original architect in the game. It may have been MuseZeum’s first appearance in DC but it will hopefully not be its last. Stay tuned to see when the gallery will be back in the district. 

On Saturday, April 1st, The Musicianship held its spectacular annual Wammie Awards at Capital Turnaround to honor the DMV’s 2023’s music nominees. This year’s 35th annual award show re-electrified the region’s artistic recognition after being bound by covid-19 restrictions. Resurfacing with the elaborate theme “The Hitmakers Ball”, this particular celebration was beyond memorable for those of all walks across the district.

The event was a ball indeed, with attendees wearing elegant outfits, strolling down the lengthy red carpet dazzled with Hollywood stars of previous winners. Saturday night’s nominees took turns waltzing through the various lined-up interviewers, speculating on what the night would hold. Throughout the entire evening, artists, attendees, and media personnel exchanged smiles as music-centered conversations filled the large venue. 

WUSA 9’s Emmy-award winning anchors Allison Seymour and Darren Haynes co-hosted the event, bringing immense laughter the entire night. Their commentary and personal spin on the ceremony captivated and energized the crowd. Bouncing back from the previous covid-restricted celebration, the Musicianship’s elaborate efforts brought a newly found liveliness to congratulate artists across the DMV. 

The two hour award show held spectacular live performances from artists across all genres. Selling out over 900 seats, attendees could only expect greatness on Saturday night’s agenda. The night’s first live performance was prepared by Washington’s Youth Choir, who elegant voices enchanted the room. Shortly after fans were lifted up and out of their seats, as Rayshun LaMarr from NBC’s The Voice and astounding guitarist Nessa Dove shook the stage with “Lift Every Voice Higher”. 

Later that evening, performances from Americana duet 3 Exits to Memphis, singer songwriter Dominique Bianco, and best music video award winning Latin rock band Perro Sombra rang out, showcasing the many talented artists from our area. One of the most memorable was the collaboration between hip hop artists Marc2Ray and trap-operatic Soprano Alexandria Chirchlow, an unbeatable duo blending two divergent genres. DJ D-Rex spun jams throughout the entire night, curated the perfect vibe to every segment of the show. 

Celebrating 50 years of Hip Hop, artists like Uptown X.O, innanet James, Pinky Killacorn, Nonchalant, and Whistle performed to honor all within the genre. In addition to this, grammy-nominated Mumu Fresh dazzled fans with her breathtaking performance and speech after winning the Hitmaker Award, bringing tears to viewer’s eyes. During the tribute, the DMV Hip Hop Hall of Fame was displayed on screen, showcasing the area’s most critically acclaimed artists within the genre. 

A memorium was also announced, honoring passed members of the region’s musical community. While the names of those artists were read, singer Fairouz Foty and harpist Megan-Joie Coleman caressed listener’s ears. The tribute was both beautiful and sweet gesture to remember those from the region who could no longer be with us. 

Over 50 Wammie Awards were announced, spanning from categories like Best Youth Artist-Group to Best Music Venue, and everything in between. Hip hop pioneer Tarek ‘Terk’ Stevens received the Trailblazer Award, Audrey Schaefer, the saver of our music venues rightfully collected the Music Advocacy Award, and DC Public Schools’s Dr Rolyndria Ojo obtained the Music Educator Award. Other winners included Songbyrd Music House for Best Music Venue, Girls Rock! DC for Do Good Award, and Tonal Park for Best Music Studio.

Closing out the event was Go-Go band EU alongside Sugar Bear, winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award. By the time the Wammie wrapped up, fans couldn’t help but to be bouncing around the venue, rejuvenated by all of the breathtaking acts. This night was one for the books, with explicit raw talent presented and music enthusiasts across the region growing closer. After this past weekend’s ceremony, DMV residences can expect another extravaganza from the Musicianship next year.

Starting tomorrow, January 1st, 2022, music audiences across the Washington DC Region will be allowed to vote for The 2022 Wammie Awards. What better way to start off 2022 than to celebrate the achievements of 2021!

Public voting will take place from January 1st to January 31st, 2022 through Nominations and Voting Award Force Portal. During this time, registered individuals may vote for musicians and artists in the DMV region.

The Wammie Awards will continue to accept late nominations until January 31st, 2022. Finalists and more details will be announced in February 2022.

The Award Show

After two consecutive years of virtual productions, The MusicianShip's Wammie Awards plans to return in person for its 35th Annual Award Show on Saturday, March 26, 2022. Award festivities will take place in D.C.'s newest, historic, and state-of-the-art entertainment venue: Capital Turnaround, located in South East Washington, D.C, just a stones throw away from the Washington Navy Yard.  This venue features a sprawling Main Hall, a 1,000 person auditorium, exposed brick Green Rooms, and breakout spaces. With The MusicianShip offices based in Anacostia, they are committed to bringing even more music events and experiences to Wards 7 & 8 - D.C.'s lowest-funded wards for arts & entertainment.  The Musicianship seeks to raise $5,000 at the awards show on behalf of our free music education programs.

Playing For Change and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) announce "Peace Through Music: A Global Event for the Environment," set for December 15th.

The event will feature more than 200 artists from more than 35 countries together with world leaders and influencers, to join the fight for our planet and all that dwell on it. There is no Plan B and it is never too late for us to change the direction of our climate change trajectory.

The event will be broadcast on December 15th at 9 PM Eastern Standard Time on the Playing For Change YouTube channel.

Calling all DMV music lovers! On December 11, 2021, the world premiere of "A Year in the Pit: A Journey into Music Photography" will premier at Court Square Theater in Harrisonburg, VA.

This documentary is one-hour long and follows concert photographers commonly found in the pit at music festivals. Shooting "in the pit" requires intense, split-second decisions to capture the ultimate on-stage moment. The symbiotic relationship between image-maker and musician provides the backdrop for a great story. The film explores the artistry and images of some of America's finest music photographers and the most familiar concert photographers in the DMV.

For those music lovers who call the DMV home, you will be intimately familiar with the filming locations because the film was shot at Virginia-based festivals and venues.
