Of Tomorrow Opens the 9:30 Club To A Night Of Dance + Free Live Single Download [Photo/Video]

On January 19th, Of Tomorrow and Boombox performed at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.

Of Tomorrow, a very talented DC band, opened the evening with a very strong performance of their distinctive sound, a mix of funk, rock, reggae samba, hip hop, soul and dance.

Of Tomorrow is Geoff Browning (guitar, vocals), Jonathan Modell (drums), Nicholas Söderström (bass), and a rotating cast of collaborators. This performance's collaborators included Natalie Ahearn (keys), Mike Candela (guitar), and Ardamus (microphone).

The highlights included exceptional solos by Ahearn on keyboards and some monster hip-hop lyric delivery by Ardamus.

Expect to see this Of Tomorrow configuration to stay intact throughout the spring and summer including upcoming festival appearances.

DC Music Review was proud to support Of Tomorrow's second performance at the 9:30 Club and look forward to seeing them perform again in the near future.

JUST ANNOUNCED: Alan Evans Bringing AZTEC SUN Into His Studio in February

DC funk band AZTEC SUN has been making some big moves, and just announced today that they will be recording an album next month with Alan Evans of Soulive at his Iron Wax Recording Studio in Massachusetts. This is a band to watch out for, and more importantly, to go see live.

Last month, we were fortunate to catch their set at an end of the year party at The Howard Theatre.  Today we are releasing some video, matrix audio of the entire set, and some behind the scenes moments with the band. Fans of the DC Scene-In-Review podcast will recognize this debut of their new song, "Resist!" from our December episode, which includes an interview with Stephane Detchou of AZTEC SUN.  Steph told us that the song, which is written in Pidgin English, is meant as a rallying anthem with the cadence of a protest or march.

You can catch them at Pearl Street Warehouse with the JoGo Project on February 9th, and you can enjoy our full set recording of their show at The Howard Theatre last month and lots of photos below.

What You Missed While On Jam Cruise

Welcome home! We're just so absolutely happy for you and not at all jealous that you got to spend nearly a week on Jam Cruise with a bunch of great people and musicians while we were stuck in the cold. Of course this district never stops, so even when the government shuts down the jam scene keeps doing what we do best. Here's a roundup of all the exciting things you missed while you were dancing across the water.

  • Speaking of "dancing across the water," Skaii had a fantastic debut at Bossa Bistro & Lounge and after a set of mostly original music by Stephanie Kaiser they brought up various musicians from the DC jam community for a Neil Young set that included a powerful "Cortez the Killer." Emma Bleker joined Skaii for a moving tribute to Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries. You can find more videos and audio of the entire show with our review.

  • Circles Around the Sun headlined the 9:30 Club for their first time, with a mesmerizing set of their unique take on the music of the Dead. Check out their set opening "Scarlotta's Magnolias" below. You can find photos and matrix audio of their entire show with our review.

  • Boombox came back to the 9:30 Club with a bunch of new music in tow. Check out their set closing "Shakedown Street" below. You can find the entire set and photos with our review.

  • Of Tomorrow opened for Boombox and we were on scene to livestream that set.

  • Antibalas put on two nights of incredible music at The Hamilton. Check out the set from the first night below. You can listen to both nights and see our photos with our review.

Dior Ashley Brown Wows Gypsy Sally’s Jam [Video]

Last night's Gordon Sterling Presents: The Gypsy Sally's Jam was one for the books. In the midst of a sea of incredible music, we were treated to this standout performance by a new face to the jam, Dior Ashley Brown. She was joined by Will Berger on bass, David Garber on keys, David Ray on drums, Kevin Pons on guitar, and one other guitarist who's name we have not tracked down yet (a sign of the jam's continued growth, every week brings new talent). Relive the magic with this video:

As Gordon points out at the end of the video, this crew had never played together, having been derived from the buckets. For those of you that are not yet familiar with the bucket jams, Gordon puts a bucket out for each instrument and vocals and people put their name in the bucket corresponding to what they want to play. A group is chosen at random, and given about 10-15 minutes to jam together. It is musical improvisation at its finest, and you never know just what you are going to get. Check out the full livestream recording to hear all the great acts, as well as photos by Josh Brick of Josh Brick Graphics from the night:

Justin Trawick and The Common Good — The Riverwash EP

Justin Trawick and The Common Good are a budding new name to keep on your radar. The “Americana” band, fronted by Justin Trawick (lead vocals, guitar), Josh Himmelsbach (mandolin, resonator, vocals), and Jean Finstad (upright bass, vocals), combines the comforting notes of folk with elements of bluegrass, and even hip-hop to produce an upbeat, happy-go-lucky debut EP. “The Riverwash EP,” comprised of five original songs, takes on a myriad of tones, lending to a diverse, yet cohesive storytelling experience.

Inspired by Bob Schneider, David Gray, The Tallest Man on Earth, among others, fans of The Avett Brothers and even Jack Johnson will also immediately be enamored with Trawick’s optimistic, yet realistic lyrics and tunes that set the tone of this album early on. In fact, optimism appears to be a theme of the album, indicating that no matter the losses, or longings we face, we have the capability of resilience that will keep us going.

Swinging right into the heat of things, “This is Love” kicks off the EP, played in by light percussion, and bouncing right into the prominent notes of the mandolin. The rhythmic airy tune is offset by quick paced lyrics calling out to a lover. This first track sets the tone for the album, foreshadowing the elements and themes to come.

Taking it down a half notch, both in tone and beat, the harmonies and the lingering notes of “Ten Long Years” in the chorus remind me of indie band The Head and the Heart. The simple rhymes indicate that, played live, this song would be an audience favorite, for picking up and singing along to the lyrics would be a quick process. Piano makes its sole appearance on this track, fostering somewhat melancholy undertones, contrasting to the uncontestedly positive leading track. However, despite these nostalgic lyrics that are tinged by a slight sadness, that hint of optimism is still there, illustrating that there’s hope in moving forward, and moving on.

“All That I Lack” is my personal favorite on the album, as the thoughtfully crafted lyrics and myriad of instruments create a comforting and beautiful track. I’m always a sucker for violin, so with the stringed instrument weaving throughout lyrics such as “All that I need/Is still all that I lack/Just the love from a friend/Who won’t love me back,” I couldn’t help but feel sad as I reflected on my own past friendships and relationships. But that’s the power of good music: to make you feel and think.

The final two original songs on the album “The Bright Side” and “All the Places That I’ve Been” couldn’t be more different. While the former is a bouncy and catchy ear-worm, “All the Places That I’ve Been” is a thought-provoking track inspired by Trawick’s 98-year-old grandma. The lyrics on this song provide the most thorough and descriptive story-telling experience of the album, with Trawick taking us through the events that occurred during a full, and well-lived life. It’s a stunning song that provides a sense of closure for the album.

But just when you think the album is finished, the band launches into their own take on Oasis’s “Wonderwall.” The way Trawick chops up well-known the lines, as well as the incorporation of the mandolin creates a fresh new take on the original track. It’s a timeless tune with a folksy interpretation, officially closing off this debut album with a sense of peaceful finality.

My favorite parts of this album are when Trawick really lets himself go and unleashes his vocals. They’re strong to start, of course, but during the loud lingering notes, you can really feel his passion for his work. You can hear a smile in Trawick’s voice throughout, and can’t help but to have fun with him. Although the band has been playing together for over ten years, it wasn’t until this debut EP that they created the sound they’re rocking now.

“The Riverwash EP” had a widespread release on CD, iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify on January 22. You can catch Justin Trawick and The Common Good at Pearl Street Warehouse on January 26 for their DC Album Release Show.  Follow this link to purchase tickets for this performance.

Circles Around The Sun Perform at The 9:30 Club [Audio/Photos]

As Circles Around The Sun took to the stage at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC on January 18th as Neal Casal greeted the crowd “Good evening on a cold winters night”. Twenty minutes into the performance, after the first song, Casal pointed back to his band and said “We are going to do a whole lot of that (points to band) for a while.” True to his word the band performed for almost two hours of interrupted instrumental musical bliss.

In 2015 this band started out as ten instrumental songs commissioned by Justin Kreutzmann, filmmaker and son of Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead to accompany the film “Fare Thee Well”. Reception to the songs was so strong that the band performed at Lock'n Festival in 2016 and has intermittently toured ever since.

Circles Around the Sun

Circles Around the Sun takes a Grateful Dead song, finds a quintessential component of the song, strips it down and then composes and reimagines a song around that component. It’s as if we slipped briefly from this reality, into a another realm where the music of the Dead is at once both recognizable yet strange and new. During this performance one could not help but notice a familiar bass line of “Sugar Magnolia” strongly embedded inside of “Scarlotta’s Magnolias”. One could also not help but notice that the 9:30 Club was also stripped down as well to it’s quintessence, an amazing quartet of musicians on stage with their instruments and a few monitors. There was no photographer pit, no elaborate stage decorations or light snow, or wireless transmitters between instrument and soundboard. It was four amazing musicians locked into their instruments - Neal Casal (guitar) played intricate and effortlessly the entire evening hardly ever adjusting his pedal tones; Dan Horne (bass) layed down stunning and intricate baselines all night that resonated and penetrated deep into the 100 decibel performance; Adam MacDougall (keyboards) hunched over his keyboards like a mad genius and adjusting the ethereal sounds coming out instrument; and Mark Levy (drums) enthusiastically set the back beat of the evening and playfully engaged his cymbals adding both beautiful rhythm and texture to the performance.

DC Music Review looks forward to seeing Circles Around The Sun circle back to the region soon for another night of astounding and inspired psychedelic jams. Until that time we will always have the matrix recording and photos below to remind us of an unforgettable performance.

Runaway Gin Announces Their 2018 Winter Melts Tour

Runaway Gin - A Tribute to Phish, the world's most active Phish Tribute Band based out of Charleston, South Carolina announced their 2018 Winter Melts Tour. The tour starts off in Atlanta, Georgia where the band will celebrate their fourth anniversary. Also included in this tour will be a "concept show" performance, We've Got A Saxophone, when they play a 2-night run in their hometown at the Charleston Pour House.

Since their inception in 2014, Runaway Gin has performed over 250 shows. Runaway Gin not only performs Phish songs, but embraces the essence of the band. During any given performance, audience members will be surprised and delighted by what they see on stage. Some nights band members will change instruments ala “Walfredo,” or they’ll lay down some blistering Type II Jams. Other nights the band may spell out something in their setlist such as "TOM MARSHALL", or even sometimes special guests such as Tom Marshall himself may show up on stage.

2017 was a very busy and exciting time for Runaway Gin. In the Fall of 2017, Runaway Gin executed one of their most ambitious shenanigans of all. When the band performed in Philadelphia they teamed up with Federal Donuts who provided donuts for Phish's Summer 2017 Bakers Dozen residency. Runaway Gin performed a mystery donut theme show, just as Phish had done at Madison Square Garden, and handed out a limited number of themed at door before the performance. To the delight of many in attendance the mystery donut was bacon.

While DC Music Review cannot promise donuts at any of the venues, we can ensure that Runaway Gin will put on an exceptional show.

The Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia region (The DMV) is fortunate to host six of the twenty one performances. Please see the following list of DMV performances by Runaway Gin.

Boombox Comes To The 9:30 Club With Local Band Of Tomorrow Opening

Boombox is coming to the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC on January 19th.

BoomBox, the electronic work of songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Zion Rock Godchaux, released their EP Bits & Pieces in 2016. The new record is a further exploration of the band’s signature sound; an electronic blend of soulful Rock and Blues based dance music incorporating Backbeat, Psychedelia and Funky House sounds, which Godchaux veraciously refers to as “Dirty Disco Blues.” Performing on stage with Zion is DJ Harry, who holds it down on the 1s and 2s.

Recently added to this evening's  line-up is local Washington DC based band Of Tomorrow. We are happy to see the inclusion of this wonderful funk, reggae, samba, neo-soul band from Washington DC on the bill.

Tickets are still available for this performance here.
