Greyson Chance To Kick Off Tour At DC9 This Friday

Greyson Chance is kicking off his North American tour at DC9 Nightclub this Friday, February 22.

If that name sounds familiar, there’s a good reason for it; the 21-year-old burst onto the scene in 2010 with a captivating cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi,” amassing more than 60 million views. Multiple appearances on The Ellen Show, an album, and two EP’s later, Chance is proving that he is more than just a blip on the viral video radar.

In the decade since he first became a household name, the artist has taken the time to explore his sound. Settling on a mellow, indie-pop vibe that highlights the raw power of his voice, Chance is gearing up for the release of his next studio album, portraits, slated for release in early March.

Releasing several singles in the past year, Chance’s mature sound is best evidenced on “shut up,” released on February 8.

Chance has discovered more than a sound in the last decade; he has also found his identity. Publically coming out as gay in 2017, Chance is using his positive experience to be a resource and champion for LGBTQ+ individuals who are not as fortunate when coming out.

Grab your ticket to his D.C. show below for what is sure to be a stellar show!

Beirut Returns to the Stage After Four Years… and It Was Worth the Wait

Listening to Beirut feels like falling in love. They’re bold and multi-dimensional, inspiring a desire to travel and roam the streets of foreign cities, having meaningful conversations with strangers a la “Before Sunrise”.

With a sound that is both worldly and otherworldly, Beirut plays mournfully, with Balkan, Mexican, and Italian brass band influences, incorporating a myriad of horn instruments such as the trumpet, trombone, and flugelhorn, on top of numerous others. In fact, there were no fewer than five instruments played at a time, including drums, keyboards, and the glockenspiel.

For nearly two hours, Zach Condon and his five-piece band captivated a packed, romance-craving crowd, capturing hearts and attention with a set that wholly encapsulated songs from all of his discography. From the very first notes of “When I Die,” we were hooked, drawn into a hypnotic daze of fuzzy memories and wanderlust. Even with the technical difficulties with the ukulele at the start, Condon was able to overshadow the brief feedback with his silken vocals and expert strumming.

"Beirut makes you nostalgic for a time that never really belonged to you... generating the feeling of missing something without necessarily knowing what it is."

Beirut released their sixth studio album Gallipoli on February 1, nearly four years after the release of their 2015 No No No. The latest album returns to the early days of the mournful and worldly tones of The Flying Club Cup and Gulag Orkestrar. Fans who weren’t impressed with the deviation from the international sounds in the aforementioned album should be more than pleased with this rediscovered balance of modern indie-pop and traditional instrumentation. It’s deeply emotional and nostalgic, with tracks that make the most of both lavish and minimalist horn patterns.

Beirut’s set was all about the music. No fancy backdrops, outfits, or even choreographed dance moves or speeches embellished the evening. When an audience member shouted out, “happy birthday, Zach!” he jokingly replied, “thanks, I just turned 19.” He added that he typically sits out Valentine’s Day in favor of his birthday, which falls on the day before. However, aside from addressing the birthday wishes and audibly appreciating DC’s excellent Ethiopian cuisine, Condon muttered “thank you” after “thank you,” unable to string together more than those words. Addressing it, he said, “On nights like these I feel like I should say something, but there’s just flies buzzing up there.”

But there was no need for rehearsed speeches or one-sided conversation. Condon captivated with his magnetic and soaring vocals, singing songs that shared a brass motif, each one bleeding into the next, creating a fluent and near magical experience.

I’d always, selfishly, felt that “Postcards from Italy” belonged to me and my past. But as soon as those familiar opening chords struck, and gasps and cheers fluttered to the front of the venue, I knew that this was a song everyone had been waiting for. Couples squeezed closer, a woman behind me excitedly whispered, “I’m gonna cry!”, and I shut my eyes in an attempt to be alone, to let the nostalgic romance overcome me.

A lot has changed from the first time I’d heard that song until now, but hearing it will always bring me back to those different stages of life. I will always associate Beirut and “Postcards from Italy” with him, with Michigan, last minute concert purchases, summer nights, and burned CDs. With car rides that went silent when this song came on, both then and now. How I will never be able to disassociate this from you, us, and then. And how I don’t want to.

And I will love to see that day
That day is mine
When she will marry me outside with the willow trees
And play the songs we made
They made me so
And I would love to see that day
That day was mine

// "Postcards From Italy"  from Gulag Orkestrar

Beirut makes you nostalgic for a time that never really belonged to you.

Whether for a feeling you’ve never had, or a time that has yet to come or will never come, Beirut generates the feeling of missing something without necessarily knowing what it is.

Their music feels like it can change you, inspire you to become happier and more adventurous.

Oh, It’s So Heavy: Tedeschi Trucks Band Plays On in Honor of Kofi Burbridge in DC

The Tedeschi Trucks Band (TTB) played a pair of emotional shows in DC this past weekend after learning of Kofi Burbridge's untimely passing at age 57 on Friday, February 15. On the day their new album, Signs, was released – the band experienced heartbreak due to the loss of their friend and musical brother.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - We Miss You Kofi!

The band's original keyboardist (and flautist) and DC-native, Burbridge faced serious health issues in the summer of 2017 when he underwent emergency heart surgery. He rejoined the group on the road that fall and toured with them through 2018 until it was announced that Gabe Dixon would fill in for him early this year as Burbridge faced further complications.

TTB took the stage at the Warner Theatre at 8:40 to the concern of some fans who had heard unconfirmed reports of Kofi's passing. The band displayed an unmatched show of strength to play on in honor of their fallen brother that included the performance of the entire new record to open the show. Derek Trucks, who created beautiful music with Kofi for more than 20 years, delivered a stunning rendition of "Midnight In Harlem," complete with a jaw-dropping solo that left the crowd in awe. The band opted to forgo the planned set break and play straight through, considering the circumstances. Improbably, the 12-piece powerhouse opted to perform "Space Captain," written by Matthew Moore and made popular by the great Joe Cocker in 1970. It's a tune that Kofi played many times with Tedeschi Trucks Band and was a major contributor to. Susan Tedeschi was visibly hurting on stage but sang on in a gorgeous tribute to her friend. Hugs and tears were shared by friends after the show, many at a loss for words and grief stricken.

Susan Tedeschi

With extremely heavy hearts, TTB returned to the stage on Saturday to deliver a spectacular and emotional tribute to Kofi. In a stunning display of professionalism and mental strength, each band membered stepped their game up in a huge way. The group even tackled "Idle Wind," a song that took us on a serious journey of emotion; a song that Kofi shined on each time he played it. On this night, Derek stood out, playing his Gibson SG with a fire and passion that nearly tore the roof off the historic theatre. One of the many highlights included an unforgettable rendition of "The Sky Is Crying" that included blistering solos by both Susan and Derek that left the crowd stunned once again. The band proved that they will overcome with one of the most memorable Tedeschi Trucks Band performances I have ever witnessed.

Tedeschi Trucks Band

The sky was crying in DC for Kofi Burbidge.

Tedeschi addressed the crowd after the show, thanking them for their support during a dark time. She assured us they will return this weekend to again deliver two more historic shows at the Warner, a venue now cemented in the band's history.

We will miss Kofi Burbridge for his musical contributions to the world, as well as the love and friendship he shared with friends, family and fans. He was a music genius and an irreplaceable soul. The music world grieves together at his devastating loss.

Kofi Burbridge

RIP Kofi Burbridge. 1961-2019. We miss you.

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
Concert Reviews

Andrew McMahon Inspires Hope at Sold Out 9:30 Club Show

Not many people can say they attended a pool party in the middle of winter in DC, but thanks to Andrew McMahon, fans at the 9:30 Club can now cross that off their bucket list. With the stage decorated in large flowers and beach imagery, the 9:30 Club was transformed into an exclusive summer party where fans were the special guests. Complete with rubber ducks and a blue cloth “sea” that covered the general admission area, the pool party themed show was a part of the McMahon’s “Upside Down Flowers Tour”. Currently performing as Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, the tour is in support of their latest album, Upside Down Flowers. The album, released November 2018, is the third studio album for AMITW and follows their 2017 release, Zombies on Broadway.

Also known for his previous bands, Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin, McMahon has been performing since he was nine years old. While many of the evening’s performances were from Upside Down Flowers, McMahon pleased fans by bringing back a few fan favorites from his earlier bands.  Opening the set with “Everything Must Go”, the last song off Upside Down Flowers, McMahon was initially hidden while his band mates took their places on stage. Midway through the song, McMahon emerged from the shadows on his piano singing about how trivial items are insignificant when you are surrounded by the ones you love.

“We are all kind of like upside down flowers; we are all beautiful and a little messed up.”

After playing “High Dive” off AMITW’s first album, McMahon brought back some major nostalgia with his Jack’s Mannequin hit “The Mixed Tape”. As soon as those first few guitar notes were played, the audience cheered in excitement as they recognized that famous song intro. With over 18 million plays on Spotify, the song gained popularity when it was featured in an episode of “One Tree Hill” back in 2006 shortly after the release of the album Everything in Transit.

Shortly after, McMahon introduced the song “Ohio” off of Upside Down Flowers by talking about his experience moving across the country as a child from Ohio to California. McMahon then explained the meaning behind the title Upside Down Flowers, saying “We are all kind of like upside down flowers; we are all beautiful and a little messed up”. In attendance that evening was McMahon’s daughter Cecilia, who was celebrating her fifth birthday that evening. McMahon brought Cecilia on stage and sat her on the piano while serenading “Rainy Girl”, a song McMahon said he wrote for Cecilia before she was born.

Sometimes when I'm falling in my dreams
I can feel you falling next to me
I guess we're going everywhere together
Rainy girl

// "Rainy Girl"  by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness

Inspired by the emotions involved with losing a loved one, McMahon played “This Wild Ride”, and shared with the audience the story of his relationship with his grandmother and her passing shortly after the song was written. Next, he went back to his early days in Something Corporate and performed his hit “Punk Rock Princess”, a rock song about teenage love.

The nearly two-hour set contained more songs off of Upside Down Flowers including “Teenage Rockstars”, “Paper Rain”, “Blue Vacation”, and “Penelope”. Towards the end of the show, McMahon performed an emotional cover of Cher’s “Believe”. Other throwback songs such as “I Woke Up in a Car”, “Crashin”, and “Made for Each Other” were played as the set came to an end. During the encore, McMahon crowd surfed on a giant inflatable raft to bring the pool party to a close. He ended the night with AMITW’s most popular song “Cecilia and the Satellite”, named after his daughter.

Also performing that evening were LA rock band Grizfolk and the Oregon based indie band Flor. The “Upside Down Flowers Tour” continues until the end of March where they will head up the east coast before heading out west and ending in California. If you missed Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness’ 9:30 Club show, he will be coming back this way in June to perform at the Firefly Festival in Dover, Delaware. Taking place June 21st-23rd, tickets to the festival can be purchased here.

The evening’s show partnered with Love Hope Strength, an organization founded to inform people about bone marrow donation and encourage them to add themselves to the donor list. On the same day McMahon finished recording the Jack’s Mannequin album Everything in Transit, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. McMahon was fortunately in the early stages of his leukemia and due to his sister being a perfect match for a bone marrow transplant, McMahon was able to make a full recovery.

One year after his diagnosis, McMahon started the Dear Jack Foundation, a charity he founded as an effort to initiate change and provide a voice for the generations of young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer. As a result, fifty cents from every ticket sale on the “Upside Down Flowers Tour” is being donated to the Dear Jack Foundation to help improve quality of life and create positive health outcomes for patients and their families. Although McMahon was lucky to have an exact donor match in his family, he expressed that not everyone is able to find a match that easily. He encouraged the audience to consider signing up through Love Hope Strength, where they could add themselves to the donor registry with a cheek swap to match DNA. If you are interested in learning more about the Dear Jack Foundation or Love Hope Strength, check out the provided links.

Special thanks to DCMR member Dan Rozman who contributed information on Love Hope Strength for this article.

Goodman’s Good Mix – Concert Picks of the Week – February 18

We are beyond sad to say goodbye to our dear friend, multi-talented musician, and above all a beautiful, humble, and kind human being Kofi Burbridge (pictured above, left with Derek Trucks, right) of Tedeschi Trucks Band.  Tedeschi Trucks  carried on this past weekend with a "performance for the ages" at The Warner Theatre, where they will be returning again this Friday and Saturday night in what will be an emotional celebration of this beautiful person. Photo and quote by Josh Brick.

Week Of:  February 18 — February 24, 2019

Summary: Bookends

This has been a hard week for the band and fans of Tedeschi Trucks, who played shows this past weekend on the heels of the news that beloved keyboardist/flutist Kofi Burbridge passed away on Friday. They powered on and played what was an emotional, inspired set of shows as part of their regular Warner Theatre run. They will be doing it again this upcoming weekend on both Friday and Saturday night.

Kofi was raised in DC and his fans here adored him.  In some ways, we are lucky to be able to honor him with these bookend shows while we continue to process the news of his passing this week.

There are so many sublime musicians that come from this region and we are fortunate to have so many opportunities to experience such diverse, passionate, and inspired live performances. Supporting local music continues to be a wonderful way to connect with the community, this week being no exception.  Many of the incredible artists listed below (personal choices in bold) consider the DMV their home.

The  billboard at The Warner Theatre read over the weekend: "We will miss our brother."  To Kofi, that sentiment rings true for this city. DC will miss your warmth and talent and we are so grateful for all the music and humanity you shared.

Tedeschi Trucks Gears Up For Another Warner Theater Run And The Hamilton Has The Perfect Afterparty For You

There are a few things that are for certain in the Washington DC musical landscape. One that DC Music Review is always excited about it the annual Tedeschi Trucks Band residency at The Warner Theatre.

Ron Holloway

The second musical certainty and one we especially delight in are the afterparties held at The Hamilton Live just a few short blocks away. This year the afterparties feature  The Ron Holloway Band and Big Sam's Funky Nation on Saturday, February 16 and February 23, respectively.

Each year, fans make the pilgrimage to The Warner and each year fans wonder what special night of fun will take place at The Hamilton. Some fans have spoken in hushed whispers about seeing Ron Holloway having dinner with Warren Haynes at The Hamilton's restaurant. Others fans recount stories of TTB runs gone by tell stories of running into Susan Tedeschi ponied up to the Hamilton's main bar or Kebbi Williams taking to the stage, saxophone in hand, and joining other musicians to party into the wee hours of the morning.

2019 is no different as the Tedeschi Trucks Band gears up for their DC romp in the upcoming weeks.

We do not know what will take place on stage at The Hamilton Live but we do know this, the night before, on February 15, Tedeschi Trucks Band's latest studio album Signs will be released. It is an exciting time, with the band's first Warner show coming the same night as the album release.

We are excited for The Ron Hollway Band to delight the audience this year as they do each year and that Big Sam's Funky Nation will be sure to funk up the evening into the wee hours.

One thing is for sure, The Hamilton Live's Tedeschi Trucks Afterparty is one of the true hidden gems of the Tedeschi Trucks Band's presence and something you do not want to miss. Grab a ticket by using the link below to see what all the fuss is about when TTB comes to town!

Jonny Grave Releases A New EP With The Jonny Grave Trio

If you are a fan of the blues, music history, and perhaps the best finger picking in the DMV then you have undoubtedly heard of Washington DC's native son Jonny Grave. Grave is one of the true musical gems and treasures in our community who has performed at hundreds of local and national venues including the red dirt floor of Gip's Juke Joint to the red carpet of the Kennedy Center.

When Grave was growing up in Washington DC along with his musical family, Grave was introduced to the sounds of American traditional folk music. At age fifteen was learning slide guitar techniques from old Blues records. The rest is music history - by seventeen he was performing them live.

Grave has delighted blues fans across the country with his solo performances and bands that include Jonny and The Tombstones, and the Jonny Grave Trio.

Last week Grave released his latest EP, Jonny Grave Trio - Live at the Luce Foundation Center, Smithsonian American Art Museum. The trio consists of Jonny Grave on Guitar, Adam Sahforth on Drums, and Kevin DeSouza on Bass.
