Ramble Festival 2023
Festival News, Interviews

Rambling on Down the Road to Darlington

The road to Ramble is getting shorter by the day and while the DMV is just starting to experience the break in temperatures to let us know that Fall is on its way, one of our most anticipated events of the season is on the horizon!  The Ramble Festival, now in its second year, is gearing up to be even better than the first and the vibes are sure to remain high, in part, thanks to the unforgettable Vibe Tribe itself.

What the Ramble Family is doing in order to build a sustainable and all-inclusive festival, is exactly why it will continue to be one on the bucket-list of festival goers for years to come.  At Camp Ramblewood, it's all about connection and community and ensuring that is the core reason for the gathering where strangers become family.  Founders of the festival wanted to do something different with this one and they have undoubtably succeeded in doing just that.

From the Naptown Brass Band rousing the campers and starting each day off each day with a second line parade through the festival grounds, to the fact that there is not a VIP ticket option because “everyone is VIP at Ramble”, this festival is unique and you can see it in every nook and cranny.  Being music lovers themselves, co- founders Brandon 'Brick' Lohr and Jason Hubert, know what it's like to attend a multi-day music event and therefore know what they want to see as an attendee.  It seems to be just that leading the charge on what exactly the experience in Darlington is like and why people enjoy it so much.  Not only that, but both Jason and Brick are also able to boast a knack for finding great artists that might not be on a lot of folks' radar just yet.  Yet another skill that belongs on a much sought after resume for fun seekers.  Their vision of what this festival is, and will continue to grow to be, is something that will make attendees want to return to year and year again.

When asked about the curation of the lineup specifically, Brick shared something that further shows the level of thoughtfulness that is put into the overall hope for what the festival is as an experience.  “We spend an extensive amount of time seeking out musically talented and energetic entertainers that elevate the vibe of the experience for everyone in attendance. While much can be said from listening to the music, we much prefer to get out and experience the show live and in person so that we can understand the vibe and how the musicians interact with the attendees as well. When we have extraordinary experiences that speak to us, we feel that others frequently enjoy those experiences as well. Each of the emerging artists at the Ramble this year were discovered by someone on the team being in attendance at a live performance and getting excited for what these amazing musicians bring to the table to contribute to the vibe."

Ramblin On Underneath the Harvest Moon
With cooler temperatures sneaking in, hours of daylight getting fewer and fewer and holidays just over the horizon, we have[...]

This years lineup highlights several such artists that we are sure we’ll be seeing in lights for many moons to come and that we can’t wait to see shine bright on the stages at Camp Ramblewood.  While big names and headliners are often what draw masses to festivals across the country, it’s the discovery of new sounds and faces that are what make these events such unique and worthwhile experiences for music fans.  In anticipation of year two, DC Music Review got to chat with a few of the voices we are looking forward to seeing and hearing, some for the first time ever.

Isaac Hadden (Isaac Hadden Organ Trio)

Isaac Hadeen Organ Trio
Isaac Hadeen Organ Trio

A young, Asheville based guitarist that has done so much already, Isaac continues to grow his musical resume and will be a much valued addition to the Ramble Fam.  Being in that area of the country, he is already familiar with the family feel in the music scene and will be more than happy adding more branches to that tree.

You're based in Asheville which is a great place for musicians, what's special and unique about the scene down there and why do you think it has such a draw?

Isaac Hadden: So, the super hippies will tell you it's because of all the quartz deposits in the soil, and while I kind of believe that, I really think it's just been such an art-centric community for such a long time that it's just drawn in a lot of amazing players and listeners over time. I think another thing that really helps is that most of the people that live there and the people in power work very hard to make sure that the arts and music scene can thrive in their community. It takes a ton of effort to maintain a healthy music scene and both the musicians and music supporters understand that. The scene itself, at least the community I've found there is really a great one. Everyone seems to push each other and there is a real drive among the musicians to put in the work and become as good as possible at what we do. At the same time, most people are super friendly, and we know that a high tide raises all ships, so everyone supports each other. The Asheville scene was super welcoming to me since I came down, and I've learned a ton from hanging and playing with the people here.

The past several years for Hadden have resulted in countless opportunity that only stokes the fire blazing in his young artist soul.  “The past few years of music have been amazing, and honestly, things have gotten to a point beyond what I could have imagined when I was a middle-school kid trying to learn Grateful Dead songs in my bedroom. I've gotten to play a lot of great gigs and definitely have been able to hit some new markets and meet some amazing new friends” says Hadden with a full heart and much gratitude.

Experience and experiences just keep coming for the guitar player and singer and he shows no signs of slowing down.  “I've also gotten to play with some bands I really love. Big Something, Roosevelt Collier Band, Jeff Sipe, and Brandon "Taz" Niederaurer.  There have been so many highlights, but there are too many fun ones to mention.”

Creating has been another activity that fills his days while in the mountains of the south and we all get to reap the benefits of that.  “I also dropped an album with my band, Isaac Hadden Organ Trio, which I'm super proud of. It's 8-tracks of really fun spacey groove music that's different from anything I've heard or played before. We also have some serious guest musicians on there, including a few members of Snarky Puppy. I'm just really grateful for the support that's allowed me to do what I love and do it sustainably.”

Rebekah Todd

Rebekah Todd
Rebekah Todd

Rebekah Todd is a North Carolina based artist with an EP and three full length albums already under her belt.  Not only is she a musical powerhouse, but also has a podcast and forthcoming wellness retreat on her resume as well.  Taking a holistic approach to her music and self is what keeps the energy (both internal and external) high for the southern-born artist.  Not only has she learned what she wants out of the music industry, but she has also learned what she doesn't want and what she absolutely will not accept, which in this day and age for women is imperative.

Todd has received countless awards and recognitions including 2013 Carolina Music Awards “Best Female Musician,” 2016 winner of Floyd Fest “On The Rise” Competition, 2017 Wilma Magazine’s “Woman to Watch,” 2018 Encore Magazine’s “Best Female Musician” and much more. Rebekah is known for exhilarating performances with acts such as Keller Williams, Big Something, Vince Herman, Andy Frasco, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, The Fritz and has been billed alongside acts such as Karl Denson, Mavis Staples, Dr Dog, Dumpstaphunk, Artimus Pyle, Shovels & Rope, Hiss Golden Messenger, Citizen Cope, Sarah Shook & the Disarmers and Rusted Root.  A wide range of musical influences is in part what makes seeing Rebekah truly entrancing and allows endless possibilities onstage.

So let's talk a wee bit about you and what you feel are some of the artists you want to highlight as influences on you musically.

Rebekah Todd:  "So I am originally from a tiny town in North Carolina and I grew up listening to quite a lot of blues, rock, Delta Blues, and I also really loved a lot of R&B.  So all of that plus being in the south here in North Carolina, there are a lot of churches.  I went to a Pentecostal Holiness Church, not through my family - my family was not religious - I just found this church when I was really young, and they made a lot of big noise. They flap their tambourines and they sang really loud and bold and I love it so much!  So yeah, my musical background kind of comes from the depths of this Pentecostal vibrancy in the music side of things and then you add in all the different R&B - especially artists like Lauryn Hill and  Erykah Badu so, I'm sort of a blend of that.  I'm also just a girl from the country too so there are still some folk influences int there and I'm still just a little white girl on her guitar.  I guess I'm like a weird blend of all these things." (laughs)

The past few years have unfortunately showed a bit of their ugly side in regard to some of the things that women all over the world still have to deal with.  The music industry is no exception to that and many have seen some surprising behavior from those we thought were allies.  This is another way in which, many may not get to see, but that Ramble Festival truly holds itself to a higher standard.  Having not just one, but two women as the emcees for the festival and making sure that artists such as Rebekah have their boundaries and standards respected is something that you would hope is par for the course, however, sadly is not always the case.

With several of the accolades Todd has under her belt, she holds space for herself and other women artists and takes this role as one very important to existing in the music community as a female artist.

We see that you got all these recognitions - Best Female Musician in 2013 for Carolina, winner of the FloydFest 'On the Rise' competition, a 'Woman to Watch' nod and more.  How do you feel about being in that role not only a musician to watch, but a woman to watch?  Because over the past few years, that's taken quite a turn as far as just what it means to be a woman in this industry and especially to be having the power that now women are given - it's so much more than just a musician I think.  It's something that is regarded in such a different way than maybe even it was a few years ago and now where we're having a whole re-kindling of the whole women's empowerment movement and the 'Me Too' movement as well that we experienced. Being able to be a known influence as not only a musician, but a female and a strong female presence at that, a force to be reckoned with, what place does that hold in your persona and day-to-day?

RT: "Thank you. Um, gosh, yeah, so you're so right. We have had this huge resurgence in past years and as we all know, as a nation, unfortunately, when there's a resurgence in one direction, there's also a backlash right?   I have lately, this year specifically, been feeling a very heavy backlash on me personally, and I've seen a lot of my fellow female colleagues in the music world experiencing this as well.  It's been an interesting thing to navigate. I think every time I get on stage lately, I stand up and say, I'm here to make space for women and I'm here to take up space, if nothing else.   And I do think that there's a lot of power in that.  I think that specifically for me, in the south, it's a much more red area and people don't like it, people do not like seeing a female feeling empowered.  There's a ton of subtle backlash that cuts us down in a lot of ways, so I think for me, it means a lot.  Every time I hear that someone, especially a female, has felt inspired by anything I've put my life into, you know, that's why I do this is in hopes of inspiring someone else."

"I'm just here to take up space for myself and for all women, and I'm here to support all women, especially female musicians, because there's a lot going on behind the big curtain of the music industry and it's really yucky behind the scenes. I've been really grateful for Brick, and this whole festival, they've made me feel very respected as a female artist, and very taken care of.  I expressed my need for safe boundaries in the beginning, and it was immediately met with understanding and respect and grace.   You would think that would be a standard, but it sadly isn't and even recently had a very bad experience that would shock most so that's something that's very fresh on my mind.  So yeah, I'm so grateful and I'm ecstatic to be able to share this poster lineup, you know, I look up to Kanika Moore very much as a fellow female artist, she is a powerhouse! I also know that she has gone through a lot, especially this past year has been incredibly difficult for her and she's still out there. She's remaining positive and graceful, which I don't really know how she's doing that and I almost envy that of her.  I look up to her a lot and I am excited to just be able to watch her perform. But also, you know, hope to connect a little further with her.  So sharing space with other female artists is also very important."

Even though it's only the second iteration of the festival, the buzz has made its way around the music world and artists as well as attendees.  Ramble was born out of a desire to create a festival that goes beyond the music. Its founders, passionate music lovers and advocates of genuine human interaction, envisioned an event where attendees not only enjoy great music but also forge lasting connections with one another. This groundbreaking festival is designed to break down barriers, encourage meaningful conversations, and inspire unity and DCMR cannot wait to be a part of it again.

What else might be a draw for you for ramble on why you might be so excited about that festival in particular?

RT: Yeah, well, it's, I've heard a lot of good things from last year. I had some friends that played it. I think the lineup this year is stellar. And I am so honored to be on it. And this is a silly little thing, but a lot of people last year just kept going on and on and on about some cereal bar.

IH: A ton of my friends played it last year and had nothing but great things to say about the experience. It seems like Brick and the crew are doing a lot of things right there and creating a space where artists are comfortable. When artists are comfortable and happy, that's where the best music comes from. I know it's not always easy and we appreciate it immensely. They've also just crushed it with the lineup two years in a row. Most bands definitely don't have lineups like this in their second year, so they've gotta be doing something right. It's the kind of festival that I'd buy a ticket for and just go hang out, so I'm really excited to be part of it. I'm really looking forward to the "artist-at-large" element because that ordinarily means I get to sit in with bands that I love and play music constantly, which is what I love to do.

The Cannons perform at The 9:30 Club in Washington, DC
Concert Reviews

DC’s Heart Beats for Cannons Heartbeat Highway Tour

Under the burning fuchsia palm trees, music trio Cannons rose to the stage draped head to toe in shimmering garments for their sold-out DC show. The sweet eager hums swelled throughout the 9:30 Club as red light flares magnified the deep beats of the Heartbeat Highway Tour.

Born in 2013, Cannons geared up for their 10th-year anniversary tour in honor of their next unreleased album, Heartbeat Highway. Composed of lead singer Michelle Joy, guitarist Ryan Clapham, and Keyboard and bassist Paul Davis, the three spectacularly deliver a dreamy, retro vibe to the world’s most popular genre. Though a sporadically rainy night, Cannons brought scorching heat to the capital’s soaked streets.

Michelle Joy

The two opening sets from Austin’s Jane Leo and Australia’s Two Another drew bodies snug towards center stage. But what really magnetized fans was the winding plot of Cannons’ relationship odyssey- from first flames of love, to heartache and everything in between. Across three released albums and one on the way, the band managed to fit 19 intricate songs into a little over an hour set.

Michelle Joy

At the first note cast from Shadows, the DMV grew spellbound with their initial taste of modern Californian 80’s synth-pop. Under the deep sea blues of fluorescent lights, Cannons visually and emotionally emitted a somber tone for their unreleased song, Can You Feel My Heart. Lead singer Joy enlightened audience on its backstory- the failure to leave a relationship much after it’s due. After snapping to the beat of Love Chained amongst pink and purple hues, the band showcased Sweeter depicting a breakable goodbye.

The Cannons

The crowd’s energy was palpable as the hypnotic vibrations paired with Joy’s twist and twirls prompted tremendous roars. Her dance moves intertwined effortlessly amid each sunken bass note and groovy guitar rift. Along the curated fever dream, smash hits like Hurricane, Bad Dream, and Purple Sun soothed ears. Scouring their discography, sensations Bright Lights and Talk Talk from Shadows charmed the hearts and souls of the thousands gazing up stage.

The Cannons

Midway through the set, the mood softened with the onset of acoustic Lightning. Joy sat center stage on a tiny stool, which she claimed looked bigger online but arrived too late before the tour. After, another surprise treat was gifted to the crowd. Woven between renowned favorites, tour catalyst and upcoming album title track, Heartbeat Highway, presented a nectarous aura of the anticipated project.

The Cannons

Teetering from tender to lively in a major tone shift, Joy described a grief-stricken woman who was put through a tumultuous relationship. “Her give a f*cks broke and her f*ck you’s became fully functional,” she said kicking off Ruthless. Returning back to the happy-go-lucky hypnotic sparks of new romance, the band presented the final taste of the new project- It’s You.

The Cannons

Of course, before the night expired, Loving You lined venue walls. As time slipped past the crowds’ swaying bodies, chart-topper Fire For You finally struck, signaling curtain call. Just when fan’s delight grew dim with the lights, the band’s return blazed a rousing ovation.

The Cannons

“Alright you guys want some more music?? We got two more songs for you,” said Joy between strepitous claps. First, latest single Desire swirled eardrums over beaming yellow and rapturous red glimmers. Then, wrapping the night in a lush illusion, Cannons closed with Evening Star, their decade year old single.

The Cannons

Though existing in modern day and age, Cannons indisputably creates a vintage and timeless perception of pop music. With their own unique twist, the band further promotes a tasteful utilization of past melodic elements. Their undeniable passion, breathtaking visuals and lights, and striking stage presence are only some of the many reasons to attend their next show.

DJ Susan Makes Legendary DC Debut

For the first time, San Diego-based electronic artist DJ Susan touched down in the nation's capital on Saturday, September 9. Within 24 hours of stepping off his five-hour flight, Susan set the DMV's ears ablaze with back-to-back scorching hits. While his primary role was to warm up the stage for headliner Tchami, the vivacious crowd can certainly attest that DJ Susan's infectious presence laid the foundation for an unforgettable night.

Amid the plethora of mellow artists emerging from California's sunny shores, DJ Susan stands as an extraordinary outlier. Bursting with infectious charm and charisma, Susan’s magnetic presence is one to attract the ears of all. His beaming personality paired with undeniably noxious mixes is enough to elevate him beyond any stage. Not to mention his creative name showcases his true comical temperament.

Engulfing fans in the sweet honey of house music, Susan proudly bears the mantle of introducing newcomers to the genre. Once gracing Echostage, wizardry wove seamlessly behind his decks. Bangers like Secrets, Dream of You, and of course Smack That stirred within his caldron of hits, escaping through speakers. The unabating retort from the sea of bobbing bodies proved Susan’s magic had its grip on the DMV.

Susan's journey to the throne proves to be one of burning passion in pursuit of a vibrant evening. Hailing from the West Coast but making his mark on the East, he has become a true dynamic force in electronic music’s evolution. No matter which of the U.S.’ largest stages he enthralls, Susan never fails to curate genuine joy amongst a crowd.

It's not every day you can run into one of the most down-to-earth music personas, but if you're in the market for a transformative musical experience, attending one of Susan's shows is a must. Luckily, D.C. was far from this legend’s last stop. Gearing up for the rest of his tour, Susan is performing a few more scattered sets between October and November. If you’re an East Coaster and an EDM fanatic, his set at Philly’s Hijinx festival is worth waiting for.

With his endearing teddy bear appearance, radiant aura, and tracks that glitter like gold, Susan is one to watch. Don't miss out on your next chance to see the "Tech House Tony Robbins" live.

The 30th Hot August Music Festival, held on August 19, 2023, at the picturesque Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, Maryland, was an exceptional day of music, sunshine, and camaraderie. Against the stunning backdrop of the park's rolling hills, attendees enjoyed performances that catered to different musical tastes and moods. With the temperature in the mid-80s, not a cloud in the sky, and a constant cooling breeze, Mother Nature must have conspired with the festival’s organizers to craft an impeccable setting for the occasion.

The musical lineup was a tapestry of talent that catered to an eclectic audience at the main Hillside Stage and the smaller Meadow Stage. Natalie Brooke & The Infinity Tribe opened the day at the Hillside Stage with a blend of progressive funk rock and Natalie's signature keytar skills taking the performance to new heights, and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong's drummer Alex "Gator" Petropulos holding down the rhythm section. During the second set of the day and the Meadow Stage's opening set, the Jonathan Sloane Trio's mighty blues rock set continued the high energy while paying tribute to Hot August's origins as a blues festival.

The day took a mellow and relaxing turn with Sunny War's intimate Meadow Stage set that tugged at heartstrings with her raw and emotional lyrics. Karina Rykman at the 30th Hot August Music Festival

Karina Rykman kept the funky dance jams going at the Meadow Stage by playing several songs off her newly released album Joyride—which Phish's Trey Anastasio produced. Karina's signature smile and dance moves were on display as she played thundering bass lines and her guitarist's—Adam November—distinctive synth looping style. Karina's danceable tunes and her ability to get a crowd grooving show why she was a crowd favorite and why she will be a staple of summer festivals for years.

Oteil Burbridge at the 30th Hot August Music Festival

Another crowd favorite of the day, Oteil & Friends, transformed the Hillside Stage with psychedelic energy, blending original compositions, Grateful Dead classics, and Allman Brothers Band hits. Oteil Burbridge, Steve Kimock, and Duane Betts traded melodic guitar and bass licks throughout the set, which included songs like "Every Hungry Woman," "Dreams," "Cats Down Under The Stars," "Dark Star," and "Mountain Jam."

Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country was another crowd favorite of the day. Donato showcased his unique psychedelic chicken pickin' style and his band's improvisational prowess across a range of original tunes in a series of long exploratory jams. It was easy to see why this young Nashville-based musician is quickly rising through the ranks of the jam scene.

Little Feat at the 30th Hot August Music Festival

Little Feat closed the 2023 Hot August Music Festival with their distinctive southern jam echoed through the hills. Keyboardist Bill Payne led the band in several of the band's classic hits, including "Fat Man in the Bathtub," "Dixie Chicken," and "Spanish Moon." As the final notes of Little Feat's set rang across Oregon Ridge Park, it was clear that the 30th edition of the festival will be remembered as a remarkable chapter in its storied history with jam legends, local favorites, and future stars of the jam scene providing a perfect sonic landscape to celebrate the day.

Hot August Music Festival

2022 Hot August Music Festival

How did Hot August get started?

Brad Selko started Hot August Blues at his farm in Monkton, MD in 1993, with two acts performing on one small stage. Initially a hang-out amongst friends, Hot August Blues quickly became one of Maryland's most beloved music festivals. The festival later moved to another farm in the area in 2002, and Hot August Blues eventually moved to its current home in Oregon Ridge Park in 2003. As the festival grew and attracted more diverse artists, the festival's name was officially changed to the Hot August Music Festival in 2014. Hot August has continued to be a staple of the Baltimore music scene, hosting over 4,000 attendees yearly.

Why did you decide to get involved with the festival?

Ryan: I worked for a local radio station, 89.7FM WTMD, and in 2007, I helped promote my first Hot August Festival, helping set up promotional interviews and handle live broadcasts. I have also done on-site broadcasts for the All Good Festival and Bonnaroo. As my annual involvement with Hot August increased through my work at WTMD, I fell in love with the festival and the people who make it possible every year. I saw the people who came and enjoyed themselves every year, and I saw it transform into a family event. Some young kids were running around at Hot August 20 years ago, and they're bringing their families to the festival now. The people are how this event happens every year and why it has happened for 30 years.

Robbie: I got involved with Hot August because it seemed like the universe was sending me something I was made to be a part of. It is odd to think about it, but it felt like such an obvious and natural thing to jump at!

Daniel Donato playing guitar

Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country, who will be on the Meadow Stage at the 2023 Hot August Music Festival, performing at Union Craft Brewing in 2022.

What's your background in the music industry?

Ryan: I studied electronic media at Towson University and did an internship junior year at WTMD, located on Towson's campus. I got into radio production, recording, and radio broadcasting. I also hosted a radio show, "Stuck in the Jam," featuring local and national jam band music. I had several friends in bands who I would record and mix audio for, and I played in a few bands myself, but my biggest interest was always stage lighting. I transitioned to accounting after working at WTMD for seven years and helping design and construct a $12 million recording facility. However, my passion for live music production continued, so I started Second Encore Productions. It has grown into a small lighting business, running lights for Union Craft Brewing and other events and festivals.

Robbie: I have been a musician my whole life and worked as an audio engineer my entire adult life. I have toured all over the world as a musician and freelance engineer. I own Old Line Audio, a production company focused on concerts and events in Frederick County, MD.

Tell us a little about how things have changed since the first festival in 1993 and what you're excited about for this year. Are there any significant changes for this year's festival compared to 2022?

The diversity of musical acts has changed the most since the beginning. Also, the festival has continued to grow in size and scale. This year, we wanted to focus on continuing to offer attendees a diverse lineup. Still, we also love that festival goers can see a big name on the main stage, but then you can walk over to the second stage and find a new artist you can't stop listening to once you leave.

What's your vision for the future of Hot August?

We want to keep producing a great event that people want to come to and enjoy themselves. We would love to expand–possibly doing two days or bringing back a third stage. There are many possibilities, and we are excited about Hot August's future.

Hot August Music Festival Schedule

Hot August Music Festival Schedule

This year's lineup is packed and looks like a blast. Do you have a festival schedule yet? Will both stages be active throughout the day?

We know no one wants their two favorite acts to overlap, but that is impossible to avoid with a multi-stage festival. We have more extended sets so attendees can hear more music and have time to see the start parts of multiple sets. We tried our best to put out a schedule of music that would allow people to see a great day of music, and we did just that. There is no filler on this schedule, which is available on our website and social media.

Can we expect fun collaborations between artists in the lineup or other musical surprises?

Who knows what will happen at Hot August? While we can't guarantee anything, Hot August has always been known for collaborations that naturally occur. We will have to see what happens with all these killer musicians in one place.

The Hot August Festival will probably be on a hot summer day. How can festival goers keep cool while catching their favorite bands?

It will be easy to stay cool at this year's festival, thanks to our good friends at Union Craft Brewing (also hosting a pre-festival party on Friday night) slinging their amazing cold beers all day. Attendees are welcome to bring as much bottled water as they like, but we encourage everyone to support our fantastic vendors. Without them, the festival wouldn't be possible. Also, there are some pavilions to relax and get shade, and we have an area where attendees can set up tents near the Hillside Stage. Have fun and stay hydrated, but we don't call it Hot August for nothing!

Natalie Brooke playing keyboard

Besides the music, what can festival goers expect at this year's Hot August Festival? Are there family-friendly options available for the kids?

Besides two stages of incredible music, we also welcome many great vendor partners selling food, beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks, and arts & crafts. There will also be a kid's pavilion (with a playground) with a hat-making and harmonica workshop. Kids under 12 get in free. We will also host several drum circles throughout the day and more!

How can people get tickets?

Tickets are available at hotaugustmusicfestival.com/tickets.

Neighbor Brings A Powerful Downpour Of Music To The Recher On Their Road To The Ramble

On Saturday, July 29th, another fierce storm blew into the region - make that two storms. In the late afternoon, mother nature slammed down on the DMV with wind and whipping rain, and by nightfall, the band Neighbor unleashed their own powerful eruption. Instead of rain, the audience at The Recher Theatre in Towson, Maryland, was treated to a torrential downpour of music that started at 7:30 PM and lasted until almost midnight.

Neighbor arrived with a little extra fire in their hearts and l energy to burn off. Sadly, on Friday night their performance at the Ting Pavilion in Charlottesville, Virginia, was cut short due to another storm affecting the region. This musical juggernaut from Boston, Massachusetts, has become one of the most exciting and unpredictable live bands in the music scene today and this performance was be no different - albeit with a powder keg of passion from the prior night that they wanted to share with The Recher audience.

Neighbor along side Ramble Festival founder Brick

Neighbor is composed of a remarkable group of virtuosic musicians -  Richard James (keys, vocals), Lyle Brewer (guitar), Dan Kelly (bass), and Dean Johnston (drums). The band first gained a following in Boston, then throughout New England, and has expanded their reach to all corners of the country and beyond.  Earlier this year they sailed aboard Jam Cruise and appeared at Camp Greensky Iceland in Reykjavik, alongside Greensky Bluegrass.

Austin Litz

Opening the evening's entertainment of torrential sounds was Frederick, Maryland's very own and funktastic band Litz. Litz proved to be the perfect pairing for Neighbor. Within minutes of starting their performance, Litz was in full flight - no warm-up time necessary, just full-on enthusiastic vivacity filling the theater. Litz is musically spectacularly diverse and easily transitioned between electronic, jazz-infused funk and had the audience on their feet dancing to their contagious songs.

True to Litz form, the energy went up several notches when Austin Litz took to his nearby sax or flute during their performance. For nearly an hour Litz sounded fuller than their four-piece configuration, so much so that one could spot the members of Neighbor looking on from the side of the theater, taking in Litz’s music.  If you want to dance the night away where electronic meets funk, then Litz might be your magical band.

Before Neighbor's performance, Brick Lohr, founder and driving force behind The Ramble Festival, took to the stage. Tonight's performance was part of a small concert series entitled "The Road To The Ramble," which features and celebrates select acts that will appear at the festival on October 6-8, 2023. Brick's infectious zest could not be contained as he introduced Neighbor to the stage. Neighbor performed at the inaugural Ramble Festival, and after their two stunning performances last year, they were among the first asked to return once more this year.

Lyle Brewer and Dan Kelly of Neighbor

The night's biggest question was what song Neighbor would perform during their two-set performance. Despite this band having just released their debut album, they have a diverse catalog of hundreds of songs, making them one of the most exciting and unpredictable live acts. Tonight Neighbor opened with "Carmelita," a soulful slow burner that eventually filled the room with Lyle Brewser's formidable guitar skills and the depth of talent on stage.

Lyle Brewer and Dan Kelly of Neighbor

The night was an exploration of the entirety of Neighbors catalog as they segued into "The Weeds" from their debut album, which proved to be a groovy funk track with a euphoric and soulful chorus, off their debut album. To demonstrate the full breadth of their musical prowess, Neighbor transformed The Recher into a jammy dance party with "Into The Sun." Seeing a crowd of overflowing enthusiasm Richard James asked how many fans had seen Neighbor before and who had not. He asked the crowd to part and have audience members who had seen Neighbor before to form a tunnel down the middle and have fans who were experiencing Neighbor for the first time to dance through a "High Five Gauntlet," and thusly inducting new fans into the Neighborhood. The Recher continued reverberating to triumphant sounds of Neighbor until Austin Litz joined them on stage for a set-closing "Broadway." Austin Litz's commanding flue solo during "Broadway" was just one of the magical moments that took place at The Recher.

Dan Kelly of Neighbor
Richard James of Neighbor

After a brief intermission, the band returned to the stage with "Cuba Street." This song proved to be an excellent catalyst for the magnificent music yet to come. Richard James could once again show off his virtuosic keyboard skills with his masterfully soulful voice as the band joined together as one cohesive force. Neighbor is a set of equally talented musicians whose musical prowess intertwine and combine to create a rich and powerful performance - Lyle Brewser's guitar, Dan Kelly's monster and rich bass sound (along with some of the best stage presence we have seen live), and the thunderous backing of Dean "The Dux'' Johnston on drums.

Lyle Brewer and Michael Palmisano duel on stage

The evening had another fun twist to it when DMV resident, guitar teacher, and internet celebrity Michael Palmisano (perhaps better known online as GuitarGate) joined Neighbor for two songs, including "Shitstorm" and Eddie Money's "Two Tickets To Paradise." Palmisano beamed from ear to ear as he performed on his latest guitar purchase, a Paul Reed Smith NF 53, and put it through its paces as two guitarists dueled it out while Dan Kelly swooped in for resounding bass licks.

Lyle Brewer and Michael Palmisano duel on stage

Before leaving the stage, Palmisano, still beaming, fist-bumped Brewer and told the audience that this was his favorite guitarist - truly high praise from Mr. GuitarGate himself.  We caught up with Palmisano shortly after leaving the stage to ask him about his experience, and with a bright smile and glint in his eye, he responded by saying, "How could it be bad? We were playing some old-school Eddie Money."  (Take look at Micahel Palmisano's deep dive into "Two Tickets to Paradise" for tonight’s performance here.)

Dean Johnston ws clearly enjoying himself tonight

The band ended the second set with the seldom performed but sincerely felt "The Bottom Of My Heart" as the band sincerely enjoyed their time at The Recher with such an enthusiastic audience. With two explosive sets of Neighbor decided to end the evening with the uplifting earworm of the song "Pine Tree," from their latest album. And with that, the torrent of an unforgettable night of music came to an end.

Dean Johnston ws clearly enjoying himself tonight

Litz and Neighbor certainly left an impression on the audience as we overheard some say giddily, "We didn't know if we were going to go to Ramble Fest before tonight, but after listening to Neighbor, we are soooo going!" We couldn't agree more, and if "The Road To The Ramble" looks like this, we cannot wait to be at Camp Ramblewood in Darlington, Maryland, in October.  More so, we cannot wait to see both Neighbor and Litz when they perform in our region again - these are two must see artists.

Neighbor performs at The Recher

Until then Neighbors and Ramblers, we look forward to gathering with you again at a venue or festival in the future.

Note: If you are within driving distance of Asheville, North Carolina, we highly recommend continuing on The Road To The Ramble on August 19th at the Asheville Music Hall with new Ramble Fest performers Red Clay Revival and Isaac Hadden Organ Trio will perform.

Wilson Joel
Interviews

Music Magnate Wilson Joel has Global Pull on the Industry

Musician, producer, and entrepreneur Wilson Joel is taking the global music industry by storm. An entertainment veteran on the path to uplift others, Joel is bridging the gap between international music counterparts. First making waves over seas in Nigeria and South Africa, he’s now branched to the U.S., joining forces with the Recording Academy.

Driven by his philosophy for learning, Joel propels himself by his kind heart and thirst for knowledge. “Be a student for life. There is always something to learn,” said Joel. “Never ever think you’ve arrived today. The day you think you’ve arrived is the day you’ve stopped learning and then you stop growing.”

Wilson Joel

Born into a musically talented family in Lagos, Nigeria, Joel always had a hankering for the art form. Hymns of soul, R&B, and traditional Nigerian melodies flowed through his mother’s restaurants and father's affiliated church. His family harnessed the magic that translated into accomplished singers, dancers, and instrumentalists.

As a young child, Joel spent hours examining record players, even pulling them apart to peek at the sorcery inside. By age 13, increasingly hungry to learn more, he poked around his hometown to find a piano teacher. Finally finding a piano repair man a few blocks down, he was introduced to the keys where he would later teach himself how to be fluent in the instrument’s language.

Wilson Joel

“I think music is a language and different people speak this language differently,” said Joel reflecting on his experiences. “With every country that I've had the opportunity to be in, I realized that music sounds different. But all this music carries soul and it carries a reading. The reading is the difference. People express music, according to their experiences and from how life has been with them.”

A self proclaimed musician up until the age of 20, Joel decided to extend his knowledge further by sitting in on studio sessions to study the elements of song creation, slightly satisfying his hunger to master the craft. Two years of learning led him to a friend and fellow music creator who guided Joel through the rungs of production. Holding a tight-knit web of knowledge, he began producing radio advertisements, albums, soundtracks and more.

Wilson Joel

Spending great lengths of time at his church House On The Rock in Nigeria, Joel became a keyboardist amongst other band positions, leveling him up to head of instrumentalists where he would teach others for five years. But Joel wanted to fly even higher. Diving further into the industry he uprooted his life and moved to Johannesburg, South Africa to swim in a new pool of the industry.

“Music has the power to do a lot of things. It can heal, it can give you life. And for me, if I can’t make music on that level, where people come in and they don't go back home the same way, I don't think I’ll feel fulfilled yet,” said Joel reflecting on his decisions. “It is a dream that I want to happen at least once in my lifetime.”

Wilson Joel

Beginning as a freelance producer, Joel quickly caught the eyes of many artists, one being critically acclaimed Lulu Dikana who built a bridge between him and Universal Music South Africa. Since then, he went on to produce music for various other artists under the company’s umbrella, partnering with them since. Becoming close with the branch’s director Dharam Sewaj, Joel’s once small patch of seeds blossomed into a field of flowers where he gathered industry ropes one fiber at a time.

Wilson Joel

Eventually, he moved back to Nigeria with his newly found knowledge, becoming the House On The Rock’s music director and later ascending to the same position for Experience Lagos, the largest gospel concert in the world. For nine years, he worked tirelessly to coordinate each musical aspect for the church and of course eventually, craved more knowledge.

One year prior, in 2022 Joel was granted the Extraordinary Ability Visa, allowing him to further his musical abilities in the U.S.’s entertainment hub. Shortly after settling down outside the nation’s capital, Joel became an ambassador for DC’s World Cultural Festival, a member of the Grammy’s Recording Academy, and a member of ForbesBLK.

Wilson Joel
Wilson Joel

Running on fumes of positivity and a philosophy of selfless giving, Joel is currently gearing up to release library music for films, where filmmakers can purchase affordable soundtracks.

“For me, what propels me to be on that edge is because I believe a lot in giving. I can give my eyes for you to use it as long as you return them when you're done,” Joel laughed. “I believe that giving is life.”

In addition to weaving the musical intricacies of various concerts and songs, he hopes to one day provide an all encompassing music service to artists worldwide. From sea to sea, country to country, Wilson Joel is changing the realm of entertainment for the better.

Dispatch with the National Symphony Orchestra perform at Wolf Trap on Friday, July 21, 2023
Concert Reviews

Dispatch Creates Soaring Symphonic Sounds With The National Symphony Orchestra At Wolf Trap

The greater Washington Metropolitan area has a cornucopia of music venues, but probably none as beautiful, relaxing, and enchanting as the venue set inside a picturesque National Park just outside Capital Beltway in Vienna, Virginia - Wolf Trap’s Filene Center. During their summer concert series, Wolf Trap hosts a wide range of performances for the entire community, and perhaps none are more anticipated than when the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) takes to the stage to accompany an artist or movie.

Members of The National Symphony Orchestra performing with Dispatch

On a crispy and warm sunny summer day, July 21st, 2023, Wolf Trap welcomed two national treasures - the National Symphony Orchestra and Dispatch.  For decades the National Symphony Orchestra has filled the Filene Center with the depth and grandeur of their music, and this night was no different. The only thing that could make a relaxing picnic on Wolf Trap's gentle, lush slopes better was Dispatch's serene and energetic music.

Members of The National Symphony Orchestra performing with Dispatch

Dispatch is an indie-folk / indie-roots band based out of Boston, Massachusetts, and originally from Middlebury, Vermont. Since their founding in 1996, they have been well known for their electrifying live performances and music that blends the sounds of rock, reggae, ska, folk, and funk to create a unique and distinctive sound. Since there founding they have continued to release new music, however it is their live performances where they shine.  A concert experience is a collaborative celebration and experience where the band has as much fun interacting with their loyal fans as the audience has.  In addition to the concert experience, the band has official “Patch Pre-Party” at select concerts where fans gather, commune, and can purchase exclusive band merchandise and band-inspired and labeled beers.  It is easy to understand why this band has such a devout and joyful following.

Dispatch

Dispatch

Over the years, the band has evolved through lineup changes, benefit concerts, charitable work, hiatuses, band breakups, and the evolution of their (and our) lives. The band broke up in 2004 in a well-documented Last Dispatch; however, they did perform twice after they officially broke up. One of these performances makes them forever connected to Washington, DC. On June 12th, 2009, they played an acoustic show at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., at the request of the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe. In 2011, founding members Chad Stokes and Brad Corrigan reunited and have been touring ever since. In 2021, they released their eighth studio album, Break Our Fall, and in 2023 they released their sixth live album, Live from Boston Woods.

A performance by Dispatch is nothing short of an energetic and unforgettable journey for the audience as the band weaves their way through their original music and integrates some covers into their performance to the delight of fans.  The only thing that could possibly make a performance by Dispatch more spectacular, unforgettable, and energetic is the musical energy that is present with the full backing of the National Symphony Orchestra in its entirety. At the Wolf Trap performance, Steve Reineke of The New York Pops conducted the orchestra.

Conductor Steve Reineke introduces Dispatch to the stage.

Reineke introduced this performance as the “world premiere” collaboration of a symphony and Dispatch.  After this brief introduction, the band walked on stage to a thunderous and standing ovation. Dispatch would start the performance with a beautifully orchestrated version of Windylike.  The newly formulated composition of this song, like others during the evening, would take an already incredible song and add a magical dimension to it.  Throughout the evening the sounds of  “Symphonic Dispatch” would enhance the sounds, emotions, and euphoria of Dispatch songs.  As you looked into the audience during Windylike, you could see tears of joy and emotion wash over the crowd.

Chadwick Stokes

Chadwick Stokes

The honor and privilege of performing alongside a full orchestra was not lost on Dispatch. After the fifth song, "Rice Water", Chad Stokes would take a moment to tell the audience what a privilege it had been to perform alongside so many talented musicians and how truly important the performing arts are. As the orchestra left the stage after "Flag", Stokes would go on to say how intimidating it was to perform alongside sixty musicians of such high caliber and would then go on to thank all the music teachers and teachers in the audience and everywhere. Stokes would add that it has been a tough few years for teachers, and he did not know what the world would do without them.

Matt Embree and Jon "J.R." Reilly

Dispatch would continue for a mini acoustic set before the orchestra returned, which included fan favorites like Out Loud, Bang Bang, Flying Horses, and managed to embed the lyrics of the Grateful Dead's Friend of the Devil and Credence Clearwater Rivival's Out My Backdoor during Bang Bang.

After the orchestra returned to the stage, the collective ensemble continued to bathe the Filene Center with the sound of soothing symphonic subtleties and crashing crescendos.

Chadwick Stokes & Brad Corrigan

With a stellar performance complete, one could only wonder what other magical moment Dispatch could manifest. As the orchestra started to perform the opening note, audience members looked at one another with looks of disbelieving joy as the National Symphony Orchestra began playing Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne. The Filene Center erupted in cheers as sixty-plus musicians were in full flight, encouraging us to board the crazy train to musical euphoria. For six minutes, the voices of seven thousand people echoed throughout the venue, accompanying one of the most enthusiastic symphonic experiences one could imagine. Sustaining the same level of enthusiasm, the band ended the night with fan favorite "Elias."

Chadwick Stokes & Brad Corrigan

If you have yet to experience seeing Dispatch perform live or you have not seen them perform recently - we cannot recommend seeing this band perform enough. A performance by Dispatch is nothing short of an energetic and unforgettable journey for the audience, and the performance at Wolf Trap was no different.

While Dispatch does come to our region frequently, the National Symphony Orchestra is truly a treasure in our own backyard. We cannot convey the energy that this orchestra brings to any performance and adds to the artist or movie they are supporting. In early August, the NSO will perform again at Wolf Trap, accompanying Hilary Hahn and Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, and will host Ben Folds when he comes to the Kennedy Center in September.

We look forward to seeing Dispatch return to the DC Metro Area in the coming years and recommend seeing this band perform when they come through your area.  We would also like to humbly ask that they consider releasing a seventh live album, Live From Wolf Trap with The National Symphony Orchestra, to fully document this incredible night of music and their transcending "Symphonic Dispatch" sound.

Symphonic Dispatch is a true delight to witness live!

Neighbor Set To Perform At The Recher On July 29, 2023

The Boston-based jam quartet Neighbor is returning to the DMV and set to appear at The Recher in Towson, Maryland, on Saturday, July 29th, 2023.  Joining Neighbor will be Baltimores very own and beloved funktastic band Litz.

Neighbor began as a collaboration between childhood neighbors Richard James (keyboard/vocals) and his childhood neighbor Lyle Brewer (guitarist).  James and Brewer recruited two exceptional musicians to join the band, Dan Kelly (bass) and Dean Johnston (drummer).  What started as a simple residency each Tuesday at Thunder Road in Somerville, Massachusetts, has transformed into a band that has stunned audiences on stages around the globe.

The last time Neighbor was in the DC / Baltimore Metro Area was back in November 2022, when they performed to a capacity crowd at The Hamilton shortly after coming off two blistering performances at The Ramble Festival.

Welcome To The Neighborhood: The Hamilton Welcomes Neighbor
Kicking off the past weekend, The Hamilton welcomed the Boston-based, jamtastic foursome, Neighbor for the first time ever Friday night.[...]

Since then, the band has released their highly anticipated debut album, Neighbor, which includes fan favorites like Trippin' In A Van, Mighty Apple Tree, Mary and Martha, and Pine Tree. Neighbor continues to captivate fans around the globe with memorable performances at Bonnaroo, Rooster Walk, and were part of the all-star lineup at Camp Greensky Iceland hosted by Greensky Bluegrass in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Trust us when we say that Neighbor is not to be missed whenever they come to town. Between James' soulful voice and virtuosic command of the keyboards, Lewer's unforgettable ear-worm guitar licks, Kelly's bass bombs and neon bass stings, and Johnson's exceptional drumming this band will leave immediately looking for their next tour announcement and Nugs.net soundboard release.

Neighbor and Litz perform at The Recher

What makes Neighbor special? Seeing them live helps you understand what makes them so remarkable - not only is it their mesmerizing jams, but it is the band's symbiotic relationship with their devoted fans - called Neighbors. This symbiotic relationship between the band and the audience touches every performance.

We consider ourselves Neighbors and cannot wait to join our fellow Neighbors once again at The Recher next week. If you have yet to see Neighbor, then know that this band is unquestionably worth seeing - especially live. If you have already seen them, then we hope to see you once again.

This will not be the last opportunity to see Neighbor in the DMV.  When the air gets crisper and you want to enjoy late-night fireside jams we encourage you to see Neighbor perform at The Ramble Festival in Darlington, Maryland, on October 6-8, 2023.  Tickets can be purchased here.
