ShadowGrass Goes On And On At Pearl Street Warehouse

Last year, ShadowGrass burst onto the music scene to take the bluegrass world by storm. Nearly a year ago, ShadowGrass had their DMV debut when they performed at Pearl Street Warehouse on May 7th, 2023. They may have been an unknown band in 2023, but on April 26th, 2024, Pearl Street Warehouse was overflowing with fans, anticipation, and excitement when they again took to this familiar stage.

Shadowgrass Gets Their Bluegrass On At Pearl Street Warehouse
Shadowgrass–an incredibly talented up-and-coming bluegrass band–took the stage at the District Wharf’s Pearl Street Warehouse on a warm, humid evening[...]

It didn't take long for festivals and more established bands to recognize the talent in this new band. With their fast picking, fresh arrangements, ferocious energy, and diverse catalog of songs and covers, they caught the attention of some of the biggest names in bluegrass, including Jeremy Garrett of The Infamous Stringdusters, Billy Strings, and performed one of their first festival appearances at Ramble Festival in Darlington, MD. Strings was so impressed with the band that he invited them to his debut festival, Renewal Festival, in October 2023 and would join them onstage. Late last year, DMV bluegrass stalwarts Dirty Grass Players toured with them. The rocket ship ride of ShadowGrass's career has only begun, and based on their performance at Pearl Street Warehouse, this journey will be a long and successful journey to the top.

Magnolia Boulevard

Magnolia Boulevard, out of Lexington, Kentucky, was the first to take the stage. Earlier this month, Maggie Noelle and Ryan Allen of Magnolia Boulevard sat down on Matt Wickstrom's "Wick's Picks"  on Hound FM to discuss their 2024 plans. They talked with excitement about doing a series of stripped-down solo acoustic shows. Lucky for those at Pearl Street Warehouse, their performance was one of those special performances. Magnolia Boulevard's, usually an electric six-piece configuration, would instead treat the audience to a delightful acoustic set harkening back to their 2023 EP Reverie.  Noelle and Ryan transfixed the audience with their incredible music and stage presence. From Maggie Noelle's slender frame came a booming voice filling the venue with her sultry voice that many have compared to Susan Tedeschi of Tedeschi Trucks Band. The duo captivated the audience with acoustic reworkings of their catalog, including their debut single, "Sister," as Noelle's voice reverberated throughout the venue. This beautiful set would conclude with another special treat - a "brand-spankin' new song." The still unreleased "On My Own" is upbeat and incredibly catchy, featuring brilliant guitar noodling from Allen. Given only a taste of Magnolia Boulevard at Pearl Street Warehouse, we look forward to seeing the full might of the entire band when they perform in the DMV soon.

Magnolia Boulevard

When ShadowGrass walked on stage, they were greeted by thunderous applause from a capacity audience. Last year, they were still a relatively unknown band outside their home region, but this year, the secret was out, and hundreds of their fans were ready for a ferocious night of music.

Shadowgrass

This evening, the band, comprised of Kyser George (guitar), Luke Morris (mandolin), Clay Russell (banjo), Evan Campfield (bass), and Madison Morris (fiddle), would not only showcase their enormous talent but also showcase their exponential growth. In 2022, the band released their first self-titled album, and their performances had setlists built around those songs, bluegrass standards, and a myriad of exceptional covers. This year the band has dramatically expanded their repertoire, and the audience would be treated to not one but two complete sets of music with several new songs.

Shadowgrass
Luke Morris

The band would start with "How Mountain Girls Can Love" by the Stanley Brothers and the ever-classic "The Ghost of Eli Renfro." These two songs allowed the band to limber up and put their personalized mark on these classics. Soon after Luke Morris asked the audience, "You like songs about ghosts and murder?" Morris would then introduce the band's extraordinary fiddler and his wife, Madison Morris, as they introduced the audience to the first "Nothing Matters." Later, the band members would further allude to an upcoming album or 'project' by talking about a new song, "How about a brand new project? Be patient. This is a brand new song we recorded. The banjo guy wrote it." before elaborating that they were working on the right tempo for the song - would this song be too fast or too slow for a live performance. In time, we know that ShadowGrass will determine the final cadence of the song.  In the meantime, the tempo and pitch of these new songs were simply spectacular and superb, without a single dissenting voice to be found in the audience.

Luke Morris
Madison Morris

Much to the audience's delight, the band would continue to pass the musical baton amongst themselves throughout the next two hours. As Evan Campfield kept the band on track with his steady bass, Luke Morris would vigorously play the mandolin and pass the baton to Kyser George, whose frenetic flat-picking is probably second only to Billy Strings, then Clay Russell stretches his banjo to its limits and then squeezes that much more sound out of his instrument with some foot pedal magic, only to have Madison Morris's fiddle pierce the venue's air. The audience quickly realized that the frenetic magic found in "Carl's Breakdown" and "Creatures of Habit" from their debut album was a reference point for some of their latest songs.

Madison Morris
Kyser George

As the band continued to jam, they continued to endear themselves to the audience. The roars of approval continued throughout the night, particularly when Russell's psychedelic banjo mesmerized the crowd, or Kyser George's playing shifted into high gear, and when Luke Morris and Kyser George traded musical phrases and exclamations with one another. As the first set ended, a voice rang out from the crowd, "Play another set!"

Kyser George
Clay Russell

After a brief set break, ShadowGrass indulged the audience's request with another set of musical prowess and fury. The second set illustrated that when this band chooses to put their performance in overdrive, they can roar ahead with the might that a few other bands can follow. Together, these five musicians collectively embark towards an uncertain destination, bringing an audience along for the journey. Madison Morris would continue to bathe the crowd with her poignant lyrics and delivery as the band delivered explosive energy around every turn.

Clay Russell

The band finished their performance close to 11 PM but returned to the stage for their encore to thunderous applause of approval and appreciation. The band decided to introduce the audience to yet another unreleased song, which featured the instruments of Kyster George and Clay Russell and drew the audience towards a euphoric jam grass climatic conclusion.

Shadowgrass jamming it out!

We caught up with Kyser George afterward and asked how many new songs were performed. He smiled and casually said, "Oh, probably five or six." With so many new songs, one can wonder when a new album, or in their words, a "new project," will make its way to vinyl daylight. Mark our words when we say that we look forward to any new releases by this quintet in the future. Shadowgrass's exponential growth bodes well for their future, and we look forward to their eventual return to the DMV.

The next few months are full of youthful ambition and musical glory as they have an ambitious tour schedule ahead of them  featuring appearances at venues and music festivals across the country.

Shadowgrass lights up Pearl Street Warehosue

If there is only one takeaway from this ShadowGrass performance, we can sum it up like this: "TL;DR - Full stop! See this band as soon as you can! This band is not only of the future of bluegrass but of the here and now!"

Album Review: Cris Jacobs – One Of These Days

Cris Jacobs' latest album, One of These Days, is a journey through the roots of bluegrass music, blending elements of blues and folk into a captivating auditory journey. With this album, Jacobs showcases his remarkable songwriting skills, soulful vocals, and masterful guitar work, cementing his status as one of the most compelling voices in Americana. We are so glad he is back with his first album in five years as it was exactly what we needed in 2024.

Jacobs’ approached the creation of One of These Days with a clear vision and a commitment to authenticity. Drawing from his deep well of musical influences, Jacobs set out to create an album that honored the rich tradition of American music while also pushing the boundaries of the genre. With a focus on storytelling and emotional honesty, Jacobs crafted each song with care, drawing inspiration from his own life experiences as well as the world around him. Collaborating with a talented group of musicians, including Billy Strings, Lindsay Lou, Sam Bush, Lee Ann Womack and the McCrary Sisters, Jacobs ensured that each track on the album was infused with the perfect energy and emotion.

Working closely with producer Jerry Douglas, Jacobs brought his vision to life, creating an album that is both timeless and contemporary. His collaboration with The Infamous Stringdusters as his backbone in the album brings it all home. From the foot-stomping energy of the title track to the haunting beauty of "Everybody’s Lost," "One of These Days" is a testament to Jacobs' skill as a songwriter, musician, and storyteller.

The album opens with the track "Heavy Water," a foot-stomping anthem that immediately grabs your attention and makes you want to start dancing. Jacobs' vocals are perfectly complemented by the infectious groove laid down by the band, creating a sound that is both timeless and fresh. It's an irresistible introduction to the album and sets the tone for what's to come. Another highlight of the album is "Poor Davey," a ballad that showcases Jacobs' soulful voice and impeccable guitar work. This ballad features Billy Strings' virtuosic guitar picking dancing around Jacobs' vocals while Strings shares backing vocals during the chorus.  The song's arrangement allows Jacobs' vocals to take center stage, and the result is nothing short of mesmerizing. It's a song that stays with you long after it's over, haunting your thoughts like a long-lost memory.

It's difficult not to want to highlight every song on this album. Each track on "One of These Days" is truly remarkable and special. Listening to this album feels like coming home after a long journey away. The featured musicians bring the perfect energy to each song, and Cris Jacobs consistently delivers with his soulful voice, guiding us home with every track.

The Ghost Club comes alive at D.C.’s Songbyrd Music House

After a series of unfortunate events, The Ghost Club finally took the stage at Songbyrd Music House in Washington, D.C. – the second-to-last stop on their first ever national tour – and brought it to life.

Pittsburgh-Based ‘The Ghost Club’ Embarks On Their First National Tour And Is Coming To DC’s Songbyrd
Domenic Dunegan, lead singer and founding member of the Pittsburgh-based band The Ghost Club, views music as a form of[...]

The Ghost Club

The Ghost Club, a five-piece indie rock band based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, began their headlining tour on February 29, 2024. They were originally set to come to Washington, D.C. on March 3, but two days before, lead singer Domenic Dunegan got a concussion at their show in New York (Read their IG post here). The band postponed the following two shows in Philadelphia and D.C. to the end of their tour.

The band has had a few bumps in the road – from a concussion to a broken down RV about halfway through the tour and an exploded tire on the highway between Pittsburgh and D.C. – but The Ghost Club finally made it to the nation’s capital.

The Ghost Club

Despite the tribulations, the band has had a great tour, according to the members. The band will end their tour with a home show in Pittsburgh on April 20.

“There’s been so much good to come from the tour that those bad moments get overshadowed very easily by what went great for us,” bassist Logan Casper said in an interview with the band.

This show was greater than great. The Ghost Club has such a strong energy, and their stage presence is infectious. Keyboardist and saxophonist Jake Barber discussed how they consistently felt like they had played their best show after each show throughout the tour.

Christian Laliberte

“Had we been here a month and a half ago, I think you would have heard of a different band play,” drummer Christian Laliberte said. “The way that we’ve evolved and changed and listening to each other, playing off of each other – even though this form of the band has been together for a while now – I think a lot of growth happened.”

Casper said that the band members are all friends, so it has been a fun adventure to tour the country with friends. And the audience could see their friendship onstage.

After playing over 20 shows on this tour, the band has gotten to experience lots of different cities even if they don’t have time to explore it. Laliberte said that he could tell that each city has its own feeling.

“If you could take the feeling of being in that room during a show, and do a blindfolded test, you could tell which city you’re in,” Laliberte said. “It’s hard to explain…Even if you don’t get to see the city, you can feel the city when you’re in the room.”

Across the country, the small band has encountered a variety of crowds. Some have been bigger and more energetic than others, but overall The Ghost Club believes their audiences have enjoyed their performances.

“It almost comes as a challenge when you get a crowd that isn’t as active as another and they're kind of more still, because it’s like, ‘let’s see if we can get everybody to start moving here,’” bassist Logan Casper said.

But The Ghost Club didn’t have to face that challenge on Tuesday.

Though they had a small crowd, the fans who attended the show were enthusiastic and engaged for the duration of the show, including for the opener. Jack Swing, known as “Pittsburgh’s House Band,” opened for The Ghost Club. Isaiah Ross, lead guitarist for The Ghost Club, also played guitar for Jack Swing (with an outfit change in between).

Jack Swing

As a native Pittsburgher myself who is currently in school in the DMV, I was ecstatic to hear that the band was coming to D.C. The band has ties to the city, regardless of their Pennsylvanian roots. D.C. was where the band produced some of their first songs, and Laliberte’s grandfather was a jazz musician in the area.

The Ghost Club brings a little bit of Pittsburgh wherever they go. A lot of artists who have come out of Pittsburgh, such as Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa, are proud of their city, and The Ghost Club thinks no differently. Even though they don’t mention Pittsburgh in any of their songs, they made sure the audience knew where they came from.

The Ghost Club’s music is high in energy and reminiscent of classic rock icons like Bruce Springsteen and Tears For Fears. Yet, their lyrics are poignant and timely for this generation. A lot of their songs take a deep look into their internal thoughts and discuss ideas like loneliness in the age of social media.

“Don’t trust your thoughts after 9 p.m.,” Dunegan said as he introduced “Likes and Comments.” “I wrote this song at 10 p.m.”

Despite this somewhat grim theme, their songs are relatable for a lot of people, and since they’re set to headbanging music, the fans at the Songbyrd show really connected with the music. Songbyrd, a small music venue, offers an artist a great opportunity to connect with the audience.

“Thank you for letting me get emotional,” Dunegan said after “Likes and Comments.”

To keep things lighthearted Dunegan joked with the crowd. He said they would be singing a cover of Oasis’s “Wonderwall,” but then played a different song. Later in the show, he apologized for faking out the crowd and said that they would actually play “Wonderwall” now. The band proceeded to play “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers instead.

But the audience joked with the band right back. As a tall singer, Dunegan was struggling to keep his microphone stand in one piece as he raised it, claiming that he often gets rickety stands. “I think you might be the problem with the microphone stand,” a fan shouted, making the band laugh.

He said he was no Freddie Mercury, who was often seen carrying half a mic stand around the stage, but Dunegan doesn’t need to be like Mercury. He has his own unique flair when he performs. The whole band does, too.

They ended their show with their hit single “Don’t Let Go.” This song was actually my number one most listened to song in 2023, according to my Apple Music Replay, so naturally I had been looking forward to this song most of all.

And The Ghost Club truly brought their all in this final song.   “Don’t Let Go” perfectly embodies The Ghost Club’s perseverance and determination. They didn’t let go and kept pushing on with their tour despite the setbacks. Nothing can keep these ghosts in their graves.

“You bump your head, your RV breaks down, you lose a tire. It’s all rock and roll,” Casper said in the interview.

After seeing this show at Songbyrd, I have reason to believe that The Ghost Club is about to get very big, and I’m grateful that I was able to get in on the ground floor.

Yola performs at The Atlantis on April 15, 2024
Concert Reviews

Yola Packs the House Twice Over at The Atlantis

It’s not often in life that we get more of the thing we want. But with Yola, we were spoiled. Yola, originally from England, although openly enthusiastic about leaving, brought thoughtful, inspirational funk to The Atlantis on Monday and Tuesday, April 15th and 16th. A second show was added to her limited and intimate six-stop tour promoting her highly anticipated EP My Way, dropping May 24th. She explained to the wide-eyed and eager audience that they were the first ones to hear several of her new songs.

Yola

She enlightened about the inspiration and meaning behind most of the songs of the evening, including the new ones which came about from the modern and ubiquitous dating scene as well as taking a stand against her English home when finally having enough of them “being naughty” as the “OG colonizers”, as she aptly described of the UK. As she simultaneously and successfully performed a cheeky standup comedy act during her set, she regaled us with tales from her online dating experience as a successful black woman amidst intimated male counterparts and how she endured a “copy and paste exit strategy” whenever she broached the topic of her career with them.

Yola

Her attention to the intricate details that we all share in our human experiences as well as highlighting her own differences is why her music is in a league of its own. Some of her new songs included “Ready,” Temporary,” “My Way,” and “Future Enemies,” one of which is her self-proclaimed “hoe song.” Demonstrating her labor of love and doing things her own way, she anecdotally shared that she and her drummer even have a deep understanding of what the other needs with a simple rhythmic grunt to which the other responds, “I know exactly what you mean.” What an incredible superpower that it’s probably too late for me to develop but certainly not too late for me to appreciate.

Yola

Yola is a longtime visitor of DC noting that The District was the first place in the States that she played sold out show. She lovingly remarked that she “will never not come to this city,” to which the audience erupted in approval. Her presence alone is vibrant, glamorous, and uplifting, quite frankly unworldly beautiful and breathtaking.  I’m amazed how Yola can make me even feel like a Grammy-award winning singer when I’m jamming out in my car—until the cover of her powerhouse voice fades out with the ignition and I’m left with my shrill rendition.

Yola

Yola, a woman of many talents, even made her film debut in 2022 in Baz Luhermann’s Elvis as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the mother of rock and roll. Similarly in her own music, Yola aims to continue amplifying visibility and inclusion for black artists, and her new EP is no exception as she tackles ideas related to agency and progress in her own work. She noted to the crowd that the titular track of the EP speaks to finally getting a say in doing things exactly how she wants, despite common and played out prejudices that she’s endured all of her life and career which have limited or controlled her in the past. As her set was nearing a close, in that sassy, irreverent manner that she cultivated throughout the night, she joked with the audience that “we are gonna play that game,” referring to leaving the stage and waiting for the raucous cheers to bring her back for one more song. As she jokingly introduced her last song, the audience booed to which she said “you all are very good at this.”

I cannot wait for Yola’s EP My Way to come my way on May 24th. Gaining speed faster than ever, Yola’s career is skyrocketing and taking us all with her.

Marco Benevento Plays a Barn Burner Show at the Black Cat

In the heart of the nation's capital, the Black Cat transcended into a haven of sonic exploration on April 12, 2024, as Marco Benevento and his band, Karina Rykman (bass) and Chris Corsico (drums), unleashed a barn-burning extravaganza in support of their latest opus, Barn Burner: Live at Levon's. The live album, recorded over two nights in the hallowed walls of The Barn at Levon Helm Studios, served as the blueprint for an evening of musical alchemy that left no soul untouched. Before delving into the metaphysical journey curated by Benevento and company, the night opened with the spectral echoes of Ghost Funk Orchestra, setting the stage for what was to come. The nine-piece funk group got the crowd dancing early with their layered sonic tapestry of horns, belting vocals, and smooth dance moves.

As the clock struck Benevento Hour, the crowd erupted in feverish anticipation, akin to disciples awaiting communion. With a flicker of the keys, Marco and his backing duo unleashed a storm of sound, plunging the audience headfirst into the realm of "Coyote Hearing." The room pulsed with electrifying energy as each note reverberated off the walls, weaving a tapestry of sound that enraptured all who bore witness. From the pulsating rhythms of "Dropkick" to the cosmic voyage of "Send It On A Rocket," Benevento guided his audience through a kaleidoscopic odyssey of sonic landscapes filled with keyboards, synths, and psychedelic effects pedals. Karina Rykman's basslines served as the tether, grounding the ethereal melodies in a primal groove, while Chris Corsico's percussive onslaught propelled the music to transcendent heights.

The barn-burning fervor reached its zenith with a blistering rendition of "Atari," igniting a frenzy of ecstatic dance among the faithful congregation. As the set continued with "Bus Ride," Greenpoint," and "Heartbeats," Benevento's fingers danced across the keys with the fervor of a shaman summoning spirits from the ether while Rykman and Corsico forged a rhythmic foundation that shook the very foundation of the Black Cat.

The night's musical adventure continued with members of Ghost Funk Orchestra joining the stage for a trio of tunes, starting with "Hit Or Miss" and then "Humanz." Amidst the melodic cacophony, Benevento and company paused to pay homage to the legends who paved the way, offering a soul-stirring rendition of The Band's "The Shape I'm In." It was a moment of reverence, a nod to the musical lineage that permeated the air of The Barn at Levon Helm Studios and now reverberated through the halls of the Black Cat.

As the night drew to a close, Benevento unleashed one final sonic assault with "Limbs Of A Pine," leaving the audience breathless and exhilarated, yearning for just one more taste of the euphoric euphony that had enveloped them. In the aftermath of Marco Benevento's sonic sermon, the Black Cat stood as a temple of musical transcendence; its walls imbued with the echoes of a performance that transcended mere notes and chords. It was a testament to the boundless power of music to transport, transform, and ultimately unite all who dare to listen. Catch Marco down the road with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore, MD, or see one of his remaining solo tour dates here.

Barn Burner: Live at Levon's

Recorded in his adopted hometown of Woodstock, NY, Marco Benevento and his band, Karina Rykman and Chris Corsico, deliver a transcendent experience with Barn Burner: Live at Levon's. Taped over two electric nights at Levon Helm Studios, this double album captures the essence of Benevento's live prowess and improvisational creativity. From the ethereal melodies of "Coyote Hearing" to the pulsating rhythms of "At The Show," each of the 13 tracks pulsate with raw energy and unbridled passion, showcasing the band's genre-blurring vision and fearless improvisation.

With special guest Scott Metzger on guitar, Benevento fearlessly reimagines classics like Bob Dylan & The Band's "This Wheels On Fire," infusing them with new life and vitality.  Barn Burner is a sonic pilgrimage not to be missed, offering listeners an immersive journey into the boundless expanse of musical exploration. Cris Jacobs— Baltimore's beaming pride and favorite sons - will perform at The Recher on Friday, April 26th to celebrate his latest album, One Of These Days.

Cris Jacobs - One Of These Days

One Of These Days is the celebrated singer, songwriter, and guitarist's first album in five years, and it seems very well worth the wait. Jacobs enlisted some of the biggest names in music and friends to contribute to the recording of One Of These Days, starting with Jerry Douglas, who produced the album and added some masterful playing. The Infamous Stringdusters (Travis Book, Andy Falco, Jeremy Garrett, Andy Hall, and Chris Pandolfi) serve as the incredible house band with special guests that include Lindsay Lou, Lee Ann Womack, Billy Strings, Sam Bush, and The McCrary Sisters.

Cris Jacobs - One Of These Days

While his new album has final mixes mastered and finishing touches applied, Jacobs and his band have been out on the road touring and slowly introducing new songs to audiences. Based on the new songs Jacobs has already released, this performance is set to be a barn burner that is going to be remembered for a long time.

Lindsay Lou, guest artist on One Of These Days, will support Jacobs for the album release party. While we cannot predict any other album contributors to show up to The Recher, based on how beloved Jacobs is, we cannot rule out a guest or two to appear on stage. Even if there are no additional guest artists, the Baltimore and DC community will celebrate this momentous new album by Jacobs.

We look forward to celebrating this new album release with our community and celebrating with this cherished musician.

AJR performs at the CFG Bank Arena for "The Maybe Man" Tour on April 7, 2024.
Concert Reviews

AJR Electrifies CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore

I have seen AJR in concert three times, and I don’t know how they do it, but they just keep getting better.

AJR, the indie pop trio of brothers Adam, Jack, and Ryan Metzger (shortened to Met), performed at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore on April 7, 2024. This was their fourth stop on their four month long tour for their newest album, The Maybe Man. Dean Lewis, Australian singer-songwriter, opened for them.

The first show I saw was their drive-in concert in Philadelphia during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was a brilliant idea. They performed in a parking lot while fans enjoyed the show from their spaced out cars. The second show was in Pittsburgh during their OK Orchestra tour in 2022, and it was the most theatrical concert I had ever seen.

Until they upped their game. Sunday’s show was like watching a movie rolled into a Broadway stage production with a lot of audience interaction. It was an experience like no other.

This tour is known as their “arena tour;” they are only performing at large arenas and venues that can accommodate their set. They had large screens on either side of the stage along with a large screen in the back. They also had a cage-looking contraption that occasionally closed to become another screen.

AJR had a brilliant arena tour stage production

The visuals at AJR’s show were incredibly detailed and mind-bending. The show began with their title track, “The Maybe Man.” As they sang about all of the types of people they could be, spotlights hit different spots on the stage to reveal “Jack” facing away from the audience, as if he was teleporting to different spots. The real Jack appeared, suspended many feet above the ground, and the crowd cheered.

Jack used the suspensions as well as the cage setup again for their song “Karma” to make it look like he was falling through the sky for the duration of the song.

Many of the songs had their own settings projected on the screens, as if they were part of a musical’s stage scenery. “Touchy Feely Fool” was set in a spaceship, “Yes I’m A Mess” began in a suburban neighborhood, and “Don’t Throw Out My Legos” showed an apartment building with dancing lights.

AJR and their many amazing videos

One of the many truly unforgetable moments (although there were too many to really count) was when the band joined the audience to sing two songs from the crowd.  Jack sang two songs, “World’s Smallest Violin” and “Steve’s Going to London,” while sitting high up in the stands. Ryan came up to join him, along with trumpeter Arnetta Johnson.

During “100 Bad Days,” an overhead stage light started flickering and fell down. Ryan stopped the show, saying that this was not part of the show. They called for the safety crew to come check it out, and I believed it until the white-haired safety crew member ripped off his wig and mask to reveal Jack in disguise. They picked up where they left off in the song as fans laughed and cheered while a message flashed across the screen saying “It was part of the show!”

The boys love to banter onstage, as any brothers would. At each show, the boys pick out an audience member’s hat that catches their eye to have Ryan try on. They picked a fan’s fuzzy green frog hat.

“I look like a flower that has yet to bloom,” Ryan said.

“That was your nickname in kindergarten, wasn’t it?” Jack responded.

Ryan Met - a flower yet to bloom

Ryan Met - a flower yet to bloom

Interactions between band members is always a comforting thing to see at concerts, and it comes so naturally for the brothers. It makes it feel like the audience members are their close family friends.

At every show the brothers describe how they created one of their songs before they play it. This show, the song was “Way Less Sad,” a single released in 2021 off of their album OK Orchestra. They described how they found inspiration for instrument parts such as drum beats: by hearing plates clank together at a diner. Sometimes the inspiration strikes them out of nowhere, and other times it has been sitting under their noses for 20 years.

Ryan said that “Way Less Sad” was 20 years in the making because the inspiration they found for the melody was from a collection of home videos of the brothers as kids. It just goes to show how much heart, soul, and brilliance goes into every song they make.

Adam introduced “Bang!,” which is one of the songs they used in previous shows to explain how they write their music. He said the song, which the band has described as a metaphor for growing up and navigating adulthood, became somewhat of their darkest song – despite its catchy chords.

Adam Met

Adam Met

To play into this darkness, Jack and Adam’s silhouettes were cast very large on the big screen behind them against a dark red background. The silhouettes then took on a mind of their own during Jack’s drum solo. It was one of the most entertaining tricks in the show.

I think one of the best things about AJR’s brand is their fans. They have the nicest fans in the world, and they appeal to a vast range of ages. Everyone I encountered was kind to each other, complimenting peoples’ outfits and just being polite. Their fans are just like band members: unapologetically themselves.

AJR - larger than life!

AJR - larger than life, and unapologetically themselves!

Jack explained that there was an AJR hate club at their high school, but they never let the haters bring them down. In fact, that was one of their biggest motivators when forming their style, starting 18 years ago.

It’s easy to tell that AJR is really special to their fans. The crowd was engaged the entire time. Many people had homemade signs, shirts from past tours, and fun costumes. And their lyrics really resonate with people.

The arena filled with twinkling lights from people’s phones as Ryan sang his trilogy of songs, “Turning Out” parts I through III, which are featured on The Click, Neotheater, and The Maybe Man respectively

It’s also easy to tell that the fans are special to AJR. They’re very grateful for the people who engage with them and embrace their weirdness. The boys always like to point out people in the crowd that catch their eye. One such person was a young dancing boy dressed in a taco costume, along with his dad who was dancing like no one was watching for the entire set yet never actually looked at the stage.

AJR fans showing their love and appreciation to their beloved band

To tie in the overall cinematic feel, after the encore, the cage screen went dark to reveal the words “Directed by Ryan, Jack, and Adam Met,” followed by rolling credits listing every person who was involved in this theatrical production. So many people were involved in this production, and their hard work truly paid off

While still incredibly theatrical and energetic, this show was a bit sadder than the previous shows I’ve seen. And I can understand why; the boys lost their dad, Gary, in July of 2023. Their album was released in November, and quite a few songs make reference to their dad’s passing – “God is Really Real” being the most explicit reference.

Towards the end of the show, Jack choked up as he explained to the audience that there were two constants in this world. The first was that they would always have haters. The second was their dad, who told them never to listen to those haters and nonbelievers. Even though one of those constants is gone, Jack said that the band would never stop making music that expresses their true selves.

“Even up until last year, it was our dad that told us to keep going. Keep going, and eventually, you’ll find some people who see the world the same way you do,” Jack said as the chords for “The Maybe Man” finale came in.

Fans loving every minute of tonights performance by AJR

In his final monologue, Jack said that their dad told them that they should always be themselves no matter what.

“For the rest of our lives, we’re gonna stand on this stage, walking on treadmills, bringing shadows to life, singing our weird songs. Because finally, after 18 years, we found a room full of people that see the world the same way we do!” Jack shouted before singing the last song. “Because life is really, really short, guys. It’s way too short to not be the biggest version of yourself.”

AJR are masters of illusions, yet they are also grounded by the human experience – something with which everyone can relate. Their Baltimore performance showed their true colors (and they showed so many colors) and showed the audience what kind of brilliant entertainers they are.
