The Boston-based jam quartet, which began as a collaboration between Pink Talking Fish keyboardist Richard James and his childhood neighbor, guitarist Lyle Brewer has rapidly grown from a hidden gem to a burgeoning musical juggernaut. James and Brewer rounded out the band with bassist Dan Kelly and drummer Dean Johnston.  What started as a simple residency each Tuesday at Thunder Road in Somerville, Massachusetts, has transformed into a band that delivers accolades for memorable performances at 420 Festival, Levitate Music and Arts Festival, Peach Festival, and most recently at Ramble Festival.

Trampled By Turtles Are Coming To The Anthem On November 4th

Celebrated Minnesota sextet Trampled By Turtles will perform at The Anthem on November 4th in support of their upcoming album, Alpenglow (out October 28th, 2022). Alpenglow is the band's first new album in four years – produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco – consists of eleven new songs that feature the group's signature blend of rock, folk, punk, country, and progressive bluegrass.

Alpenglow (Released on October 28, 2022)

Alpenglow (out October 28th, 2022)

"It's a beautiful phenomenon," says Trampled by Turtles' Dave Simonett, before adding with characteristic sincerity: "Everybody should see it."  Simonett is talking about alpenglow, the natural event that washes mountains on the horizon in smoldering red and pink light just before the sun sets or rises. It's a harbinger of change – the space between new and old. It's also the name of Trampled by Turtles' new album, the band's tenth. "My favorite part about making music is making records," says Simonett. "I'm really excited about this one."

Alpenglow (Released on October 28, 2022)

Alpenglow (out October 28th, 2022)

Alpenglow offers resounding proof that the beloved six-piece from Minnesota remain the uncontested champs of understated virtuosity, literary songwriting, and a joyful hodgepodge of folk heart, rock-and-roll muscle, and string-band zen. Almost 20 years after first getting together, Trampled – that's lead singer and songwriter Dave Simonett, bassist Tim Saxhaug, banjo player Dave Carroll, mandolinist Erik Berry, fiddle player Ryan Young, and cellist Eamonn McLain – also keep finding new ways to surprise us and one another.

Trampled by Turtles has been slowly releasing songs from Alpenglow on Spotify and Tidal, and we, like you, couldn't be more excited to hear the album in its entirety. Their upcoming Anthem appearance will be the second stop on their nineteen-stop coast-to-coast tour, and DMV residents will be among the first to hear these new songs performed live.

Tickets are on sale now for Trampled By Turtles Anthem performance below. In addition, you can pre-order Alpenglow on limited edition vinyl pressings here, and you can keep that poster tube at home and pre-order their concert poster here.

Adeem The Artist To Perform At Rams Head On Stage On October 18th

At every music festival, there is a breakthrough artist that we never knew about, but people fall in love with - a shiny hidden gem that blows people away. Eastern Tennessee-based songwriter Adeem the Artist did just that a few weeks ago at AmericanaFest 2022.

Seamlessly picking up where their acclaimed 2021 album Cast-Iron Pansexual left off—an album praised by Rolling Stone and American Songwriter for its examination of faith, sexual identity, and self-acceptance—Adeem’s latest output “Going To Hell” finds the Artist balancing their Appalachian music influences and poetic flair with a healthy dose of comedic instinct.

Recently hailed by The Boot for their “unwavering charm and charisma” and “comedic country gold,” Rolling Stone named their AmericanaFest2022 performance one of the best shows at the festival.

“Humor has always been a part of my life,” explains Adeem, citing comedians Andy Kaufman and Sarah Silverman as artistic influences in addition to musicians like John Prine and Blind Boy Fuller. Growing up, first in North Carolina and later in Syracuse, New York, Adeem quickly realized that with the right delivery, dark jokes could offer a socially acceptable way to open up about the tough stuff. “  My parents are both from a lot of generational trauma, and I was born right at the heart of it,” they say, “Humor is just how we survived.”

Courtesy of Paste Magazine

Adeem the Artist will perform in Annapolis at Rams Head On Stage on October 18  and will be supporting Crystal Bowersox. You may recognize Bowersox as the runner-up to American Idol Season 9. Although her spectacular broadcast performances of 2010 left us spellbound, Bowersox should not be defined by this part of her career. In the twelve years since American Idol, Bowersox has gone on to release four albums, including HitchHiker, which was released earlier this year.

Elton John performs at Nationals Park on September 24, 2022
Concert Reviews

Elton John Says Farewell To Yellow Brick Road At Nationals Park

Just one day after Elton John received the National Humanities Medal from President Joe Biden at the White House, Sir Elton Hercules John put on a truly transcending and divine performance at Nationals Park in Washington, DC, on Saturday, September 24th.  This Saturday night would not be right for fighting but rather celebrating and taking in the career that belongs to Elton.

An Elton John Fan at Nationals Park

The Rocketman came to Nationals Park as part of his worldwide "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour and a journey towards the end of a truly spectacular live performance career.  Fans around the globe are sad to see this journey come to an end, but it is also a journey that everyone in attendance was ever so grateful to be a part of. Some fans in attendance at Nationals Stadium had only taken a few steps down the yellow brick road with Elton John, while others had walked beside Elton for decades. It was easy to understand why people have taken the journey with Elton as his music reaches far into our DNA as music fans, across generations, across musical genres, continents, and cultures. Elton John's music is honest, heartfelt, and has a universal appeal.

An Elton John Fan at Nationals Park
Elton John

Perhaps the greatest gift on this last three-year ride of touring is that Elton has many of the same core musicians in his touring band that played on his classic albums and bands over the past fifty-plus years. Elton John and his band are not trying to replicate the sound or recapture that "lighting in a bottle" synonymous with Elton's studio and live recordings throughout his career. The very elements of Elton's "lightning in the bottle" were right there on stage with Elton and right before our very eyes. The sound fans are treated to on this tour is the same sound and quintessence of Elton John that only the original players could achieve. Guitarist Davey Johnstone, who is Elton's band leader, has been with Elton since 1971, first appearing on the album, Madman Across The Water. Veteran percussionist Ray Cooper joined in 1971, adding his highly sought-after playing and his animated stage presence. The longest-tenured band member, drummer Nigel Olsson has played with Elton since 1969. Nigel wrote the road map for pop drumming and played just as brilliantly on Saturday night as he did in the 1970s. Well-traveled bassist Matt Bissonette filled the considerably large shoes of original bassist Dee Murray, who passed away in 1992. Rounding out the band was percussionist John Mahon and keyboard player Kim Bullard.

Elton John

After kicking the night off with "Bennie and the Jets", Elton proclaimed, "This is my last ever appearance in Washington DC, so let's make it a good one!" And with that brief remark, we all knew that this would not be a leisurely journey to the end of Yellowbrick road but a rollercoaster of joyous, sentimental, and exuberant frenetic energy. Elton and his band moved adeptly through his staggering catalog, crushing versions of "Philadelphia Freedom", "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues", then "Border Song", pausing to tell the story of Aretha Franklin performing that song at the Cathedral of St. John The Divine in New York City at her last concert.

Hit after hit ensued with "Tiny Dancer", "Rocket Man", "Take Me To The Pilot", "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", "Levon", and a show-stopping solo "Candle In The Wind".

Elton John

Gone are the days of his wild, over-the-top costume changes. Instead, tonight saw subtle costume changes - a new jacket, different colored glasses, or in the end, a bathrobe. Although in our mind's eye, we can still see the costumes of yesteryear sparkling, twinkling, and quacking. Tonight Elton gave himself a short break to change some clothes with a piece of familiar ethereal music as wind and chimes started to bellow from the PA system until the band took over for "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding".  Elton's piano seemed to magically take a ride back and forth across the stage, giving folks on each side a better view and a little big stadium drama as the band continued to find the center of every song. Elton has always been one of the most exciting showmen to entertain an audience, and this piano magic was now added to the Rolodex of mythical stage moments Elton would provide to an audience.

In between songs, Elton stood thanking the crowd for the thunderous applause, pointing at individual fans, and commenting on people who dressed as some of his famous concert characters. He was friendly and grateful as he brought tears to many and happiness to everyone. By the time he had finished his two-and-a-half-hour show, he and his band had delivered precisely what fans came expecting - that magic in a bottle that is, beyond a doubt, Elton John.

Elton John

The band finished their third of three encore songs with "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" as his piano once again slowly glided across the stage to the bright yellow lights on the right. When the song finished and he and the band took their final bows, Elton stood on a platform at the back of the right side of the stage, which slowly rose to the top of his stage set. With a final wave, he walked through an open gap in the set towards the end of Yellow Brick Road. As the crowd was left to revel in the night, there were beaming smiles found across the endless aisles of fans - the mood elevated, a grateful mass feeling better for the experience. Although people may have been sad that the show was over, they were clearly grateful they had one last opportunity to see a living legend as he performed one last time in Washington, DC.

Elton John

There are precious few shows left for Elton and the band on this tour, his last. So if you feel like you owe it to yourself, do not wait and do not let the sun go down without seeing Elton John on his final tour!

Farewell Yellow Brick Road and Farewell Elton!

"No Rain" by Cris Jacobs and KC Corbett

Cris Jacobs and KC Corbett Unveil Animated Music Video for “No Rain” Cover

Earlier this month beloved Baltimore singer-guitarist Cris Jacobs and animator KC Corbett released their new music video for Jacobs’ cover of Blind Melon’s quintessential hit “No Rain.”

Jacobs’ rootsy, blues-infused acoustic take on the song is transported into the world of a robot working a monotonous job in a cubicle, dreaming of frolicking in expansive nature.

“It’s a song we both grew up with, and I just came up with this version on the spot and laid it down,” Jacobs says. “KC came up with this video concept, and it became a very moving interpretation of the song.”

Deftly capturing the juxtaposition of the whimsical, bare-bones recording and poignant lyrics, Corbett draws on universal themes of corporate job pressures, loneliness, emotional well-being, and pursuing one’s passions – themes that resonate with many of us.  This theme equally resonates with Corbett, having recently left a nine-to-five job to pursue his artistry, and with Jacobs, who has chosen a life as a touring musician.

“Cris perfectly captures the contrast of a beloved rock song from the ’90s with these lyrics about isolation,” Corbett says. “I wanted to create a direct comparison to our world from the point of view of someone who is in the gears of the machine, but having this fantastical break from reality.”

One might not expect such a futuristic video for an acoustic song, but Jacobs’ pulsating finger-picking serves as the perfect rhythmic backdrop to Corbett’s assembly line scenes and robot daydreams.  For those of us that have seen Jacobs perform live. we can see Jacobs sitting in a chair and tenderly picking away on his cherished cigar box guitar.

Cris has packed his guitars up and taken his namesake band back out on the road for his Fall Tour 2022 including three DMV shows.

The complete list of Cris Jacobs' Fall Tour can be found below.

Watkins Family Hour Celebrates Two Decades Of Community And Collaboration At The Birchmere On October 23rd

When Sara and Sean Watkins first began playing Watkins Family Hour shows at Los Angeles's beloved Largo, the siblings and musicians had little idea just how far the collaborative variety show would go. Twenty years, two studio albums, and hundreds of performances later, the two are taking stock of the ever-evolving community of musicians and music lovers the project helped build.

"(Remember Me) I'm the One Who Loves You"

(Dean Martin cover featuring Fiona Apple)

As part of that reflection, Watkins Family Hour released their third studio album Vol. II. This spectacular album consists of eleven cover songs with some notable friends who have been by the sides of Sara and Sean during their long career and appearances throughout the country. The album features collaborations with some noticeable artists, including Fiona Apple, Madison Cunningham, Benmont Tench, Jackson Browne, and more.  Don't just take our word for the merit of this album; read some reviews from AP and Variety.

"During the pandemic, we crossed the 20-year mark," Sara says. "And we wanted to celebrate that. I am kind of amazed that we're still doing it. It doesn't feel like it's been 20 years. But when I think about the number, I think, 'Wow, there were so many transitions that happened in that period where the Family Hour work could have just petered away. And we kept choosing to do it."

Vol. II opens with "The Way I Feel Inside," a Zombies song Sara and Sean reimagined alongside indie pop band Lucius. Sean plays a rubber bridge baritone guitar on the track, adding a percussive, melodic structure for the group's heavenly vocal harmonies to float through, with the low richness of Sara's violin offering striking counterpoint to one of her more dynamic vocals.  Madison Cunningham, who appears across the album, joins on Elliott Smith’s “Pitseleh,” a song the Family Hour hadn’t played often but was formative to both Sara and Sean. We can all agree that the world needs more Elliott Smith and this divine and upbeat version is just what we all need to brighten our day.

"Pitseleh"

(Elliott Smith cover featuring Madison Cunningham)

"The Way I Feel Inside" and "Pitseleh" are just some of the brilliantly reimagined songs you will have the opportunity to hear live as Watkins Family Hour performs next month when they appear at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia, on October 23rd. We hope you will join us in celebrating twenty years of wonderful performances alongside Sara and Sean Watkins with special guest Willie Watson.

Soulful Ali McGuirk Set To Perform At Jammin Java On September 28th

Soulful Vocal Powerhouse Ali McGuirk is set to perform Jammin Java this coming Wednesday, September 28th. From the first few words out of McGuirk's soulful mouth, you will instantly recognize she is destined for greatness and is a hidden gem who is just starting out on an incredible career.

Til It's Gone (Released September 16, 2022)

Til It's Gone (Released September 16, 2022)

McGuirk comes to Jammin Java days after the release of her sophomore album Til It's Gone (released on September 16th, 2022). While this soulful songsmith loves to dip into a multitude of genres and sub-genres on her latest album, she never strays too far away from its rhythm and blues essence with McGuirk's potent and dynamic delivery.  When we talk of our feelings about McGuirk's voice and the great career she has in front of her, we defer to Under The Radar's impressions of the first song on Til It's Gone as to how we and others feel about the first song - "X Boyfriends."

Til It's Gone (Released September 16, 2022)

Til It's Gone (Released September 16, 2022)

“X Boyfriends” is a gorgeously constructed effort, recalling strains of vintage soul and R&B with a full and fervent sound. McGuirk’s vocals are the spotlit focal point, bolstered by swelling harmonies, bursts of smoky guitar, soulful organ melodies, and luxuriant grooves. The resultant track is a spellbinding work of timeless soul beauty, offering a tasteful fusion of classic stylings with a bright modern sheen.

McGuirk's voice and vocal style transcends decades of Soul and R&B, and although she draws from the influences of these genres, she manages to write new music with modern themes and events. When speaking of the songs in her latest album McGuirks talks about the development of the easy-grooving "All Back." "When this hook first came to mind for me, the theme was really open and I wasn't sure what the song would be about. As it developed, it became clear to me that I was writing a song for the end of the pandemic," remembers McGuirk. Complemented by sultry background vocals and tasty Hammond organ interjections (that's Larry Goldings on the B3!), "All Back" feels all at once vintage and current. As she sings an Americana and folk-influenced "Empty Vase," her soulful honey-dripped voice pierces through the music. As one listens to "Let It Be You," you can only envision one day Susan Tedeschi, also hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, stepping in stage-left to sing alongside McGuirk.

Til It's Gone, alongside McGuirk's 2017 debut album, Slow Burn, are worth listening to several times as her soulful sound layers up upon your ears.  Perhaps these albums are worth a listen to with a glass of red wine on the ever cooler autumn nights.

Better yet, you should find your way to Vienna, Virginia, to see McGuirk perform live at Jammin Java.

The Sheepdogs

The Sheepdogs Will Bring Their Full-Throttle Rock ‘n’ Roll Sound To Union Stage On October 21st

Throughout the pandemic and music industry shut down, there was one thing, and only one, that saved Saskatchewan-based band The Sheepdogs - straight-up, non-bummer, pandemic-induced rock and roll. And on June 3rd, 2022, with the release of their new album, Outta Sight, The Sheepdogs hope that rock and roll can save you too.

The Sheepdogs were formed in 2004 and have an incredible legacy which includes number one songs, gold and platinum albums, countless sold-out tours, and have landed on the cover of Rolling Stone. Despite all their accolades they remain a tight-knit and down-to-earth rock 'n' roll force to be reckoned with.

The hard-working and hard-living Canadian band composed of Ewan Currie (vocals, guitar), Ryan Gullen (bass), Sam Corbett (drum), Jimmy Bowskill (guitar), and Shamus Currie (guitar)—were, like the rest of us, confused, cast ashore, and feeling isolated during COVID. This band used this time to produce the grooviest, simplest, and most penetrating album of their career - Outta Sight. With no roadmap and an overall uncertainty hanging over the universe, The Sheepdogs circled up, plugged into their amps, shared riffs and melodies, and leaned on each other for inspiration.

The strength of The Sheepdogs is in their full-throttle music that appeals to your senses. Without pretension, it's urgent, rhythmic, clear, and fun; it's a break from slick production and gazing at your navel and proclaims the joy and jubilation of drums, bass, horns, and electric guitar. The Sheepdogs make tunes that make you nod your head.

"Rock 'n' Roll is about cheering us up. Simple as that," says Ewan Currie. "We hope our music does the same for the listeners at a time where things still can feel very tough. There's no greater truth than rock 'n' roll."

True to their word - there is no greater truth than rock 'n' roll - especially the way The Sheepdogs deliver it. Once you start listening to the music of The Sheepdogs, you cannot escape that smile delivered straight to your face as their infectious guitar-driven rock moves and captures every fiber of our being.
As you listen to the music of The Sheepdogs, your ears perk up as you can hear the quintessence and influence of 1970s guitar-driven rock. Listen as The Sheepdogs create fresh new music while drawing from timeless music.

Each time we listen to the music of The Sheepdogs, we look forward to seeing them perform live, and it is with deep anticipation that we look forward to seeing The Sheepdogs perform at Union Stage in Washington, DC, on October 21st.

Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band played The Lyric in Baltimore, a stately, gorgeous 2500-seat theater built in 1894. Everything about the theater spoke to the high class and caliber of this historic venue - from the boxes adorning the sides of the lower level to the red velvet seats. This venue was perfect for this tour de force that Ringo has out on the road. The comfortable seats didn't get much use, however, as most of the crowd spent the night on their feet.

Ringo brought six veteran pros with him, including four members who are leaders of their own bands. Each of the "All-Starr" band members were truly just that, all-stars, with a ridiculous amount of hits and experience between them and stars in their own right. Steve Lukather (Toto), Edgar Winter (Edgar Winter Group), Colin Hay (Men at Work), and Hamish Stuart (Average White Band) completed the front line, with multi-instrumentalist Warren Ham and drummer Greg Bissonette playing on stage risers behind and aside Ringo's drum kit.

The capacity crowd early awaite Ringo and his band as they early clutched cell phones to capture the magic of the night. Ringo started the night with three straight songs on vocals, "Matchbox", "It Don't Come Easy," and "What Goes On", the latter of which he mentioned is the only song written by himself, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney. Ringo was in exceptionally high spirits and shared a story about how his appeals for his name to be first, having the song listed as Starr/Lennon/McCartney, was met with a sharp "bugger off" by his famous songwriting bandmates. This brings to mind how Ringo is completely affable. He treats his audience like they were old friends who came by to see him, which with a literal lifetime of listening to his music, we all felt like we were. He told numerous stories, straying from one side of the stage to the other, pointing to various people in the audience, engaging with them, asking them about their tee shirt, complimenting them on their blouses, and accepting a bouquet of sunflowers. It was so comfortable and relaxed, it was truly a communal experience. We all look back on footage or remember Ringo's days a Beatle, a "mop top" drummer, member of the fab four, global super-star, whose name and music is embedded in the world's social fabric. After all, there is indeed only one "Ringo" any of us know. For all the accolades and fame, here he was, as engaging, humble, and wonderful as anyone could hope to experience in a modest 2,564 capacity venue.

After the first three songs and joyfully bantering and interacting with the crowd, Ringo took a long stint on the drum kit. Although Ringo was the band leader and headliner everyone came to see, he shared the spotlight with his band mates as they all worked their way through stone-cold hits such as Edgar Winters' "Free Ride", Toto's "Rosanna", The Average White Band's "Pick Up The Pieces" and Men At Work's "Down Under". Ringo came back to the front of the stage for one of his biggest Beatles hits, "Yellow Submarine" before taking a couple song break off stage while the band absolutely crushed the Average White Band's "Cut The Cake" and Edgar Winters' classic "Frankenstein".

Ringo Starr

When Ringo came back on stage they launched right into one of his other Beatles' hits "Octopus's Garden" backed by "Back Off Boogaloo". Following that, where "Cut The Cake" and "Frankenstein" served as showcases for the considerable musicianship the members of the band still posses, Toto's "Africa" really showed off the vocal chops of all seven band members. It was honestly astonishing to hear that level of singing right in front of you.

The band teased other Beatles songs through the night, starting "Day Tripper" and "I Feel Fine" on guitar before immediately changing course. Or during Greg Bissonette's drum solo he quoted the drum lines for "Come Together", "Tomorrow Never Knows" and Ringo's drum solo from "The End". But as the night drew to a close they represented Ringo's work in the Beatles properly with an energetic version of "With A Little Help From My Friends" and lead that into "Give Peace A Chance". Ringo slipped out before the song was done and in a flash, the two and a half hour show concluded The crowd slowly moved to file out, deep satisfied smiles adorning their faces, high fives asked for and granted by strangers, a little youth recaptured, a little history soaked in.
