Jamestown Revival Barnstorms The East Coast Including A Stop At The 9:30 Club on March 12th

On January 14th, 2022, Jamestown Revival released their newest album Young Man. The very same day they started an ambitious tour of the United States that includes an East Coast leg. That leads us to the announcement that they will be barnstorming the DMV as they perform at The Broadberry in Richmond, Virginia, on Friday March 11, and the 9:30 Club on Saturday, March 12, 2022.

Jamestown Revival - Young Man

Young Man - Released on January 14, 2022

In 2020, Jamestown Revival released A Field Guide To Loneliness, an intimate collection of songs that finds Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance reflecting on recent times whereby human contact was limited more than ever.  A Field Guide To Loneliness follows Jamestown Revival’s 2019 critically acclaimed release, San Isabel. Recorded in a remote cabin in the majestic and calming landscape of central Colorado, the band embraced a minimalist approach in the recording of San Isabel. Finding inspiration in ‘60s and early 70’s folk and pop, the original songs on San Isabel show reverence for early John Denver and Bob Dylan, as well as Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

So you may ask yourself, "Why should I be excited to see and hear this Texan folk rock, Americana band?" Take a listen to the tracks off of their latest album and be excited for a tremendous night of music that lay before you.

Before the fiddle plays a thoughtful refrain, and before the steel guitar and soft back beat sneak in for the second verse, the close harmony of Jamestown Revival’s new song “Working On Love” encompasses everything that makes bandmates Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance so beloved in today’s roots music scene. Everything else is just lagniappe. “Working On Love,” the final track on Jamestown Revival’s album Young Man, deals in the continuing pursuit of loving better, one where the music is only bettered by the sentiment of its message. “The love we have in our lives for partners, family, and friends isn't something that we can just set and forget,” say Clay and Chance. “Working on love is like plowing the field, watering the soil, and pruning the tree. To love unconditionally is a lifelong journey.”

The Wood Brothers Kicking Off Their 2022 Tour With An Early Stop To The 9:30 Club

Fresh into 2022 and The Wood Brothers have announced their 2022 touring plans. This extensive 2022 calendar sees them touring well into April. Lucky for residents of the DMV, The Wood Brothers bring their Americana music to the 9:30 Club on January 26th.

The Wood Brothers - Kingdom In My Mind

Kingdom In My Mind, released January 24, 2020.

This appearance will be an excellent opportunity to hear songs from their latest album, Kingdom In My Mind, performed live. “Everyone has these little kingdoms in their minds,” says Chris Wood, “and the songs on this album all explore the ways we find peace in them. They look at how we deal with our dreams and our regrets and our fears and our loves. They look at the stories we tell ourselves and the ways we balance the darkness and the light.”

The Wood Brothers - Kingdom In My Mind

Kingdom In My Mind, The Wood Brother's 7th studio album, was released January 24, 2020.

That balance of darkness and light is at the heart of Kingdom In My Mind, and their most spontaneous and experimental collection yet. The songs contained on this album are a reckoning with circumstance, mortality, and human nature, one that finds strength in accepting what lies beyond our control. Thoughtfully honing in on the bittersweet beauty that underlies our doubt and pain, the songs grapple with the power of our external surroundings to shape our internal worlds (and vice versa) through vivid character studies and unflinching self-examination. The lyrics dig deep here and may resonate with fans more than their previous songs.

The Wood Brothers didn’t know they were making a record. Looking back, they’re grateful for that. “If we had known, we probably would have been too self-conscious to play what we played,” reflects bassist/vocalist Chris Wood. “At the time, we just thought we were jamming to break in our new studio, so we felt free to explore all these different ways of performing together without worrying about form or structure. It was liberating.”  Recorded live to tape, those freewheeling, improvised sessions became a vast pool of source material from which The Wood Brothers would go on to draw their most spontaneous and experimental collection yet.

The only thing better than having an album recorded live to tape is to have these songs performed live in front of an audience. DC Music Review is excited to see  The Wood Brothers, supported by Steve Poltz, performing live again inside the 9:30 Club.

The Final Curtain Call At Gypsy Sally's

Two Years On – John Kadlecik’s Sold Out “Fare Thee Well DC” Run at Gypsy Sally’s

Two thousand twenty-twenty seems like a lifetime ago for everyone. January 6th, 2020, in particular, seems like a millennia ago. It was on that day that music lovers around the DMV woke up knowing that the beloved music venue Gypsy Sally's had closed their doors for good.

To many, it felt like their musical refuge and home away from home was gone. To many, we all thought that Gypsy Sally's closure was the worst possible thing that could happen in 2020 - sadly, how very mistaken we all were.

As we look back upon Gypsy Sally's last night of music and all the great performances we witnessed within its halls, we must all collectively embrace Dr. Seuss' wise words "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

We hope you enjoy reliving some of the beautiful memories from that joyous, if not bittersweet, night of music and a celebration of our community.

Original Article: By Will Urquhart - January 2020

John Kadlecik's "Fare Thee Well" run of shows to close out Gypsy Sally's this weekend is very sold out, but if you missed your chance to take part in analog, you will now have the option to join us digitally (hat tip to Gina Sobel for the analogy). We at DC Music Review are happy to announce that we will be providing a free webcast all weekend as we say goodbye to a venue that has touched so many hearts in the DMV community and around the country.

John Kadlecik arguably put Gypsy Sally's on the map with his first run of shows there on consecutive Tuesdays in 2014, not too long after they opened their doors. Since then, he returned numerous times every year, and his performances - both the Jerry Garcia recreations and his original works - became a staple at the venue.  So, it is fitting that he will lead the closeout run and provide the soundtrack for our fond farewells.

We know that so many more people than can fit in that venue want to be a part of these last shows on January 3, 4, and 5. If you cannot be there in person for whatever reason, please join us on our webcast via the DC Music Review facebook page,  on the DC Music Review YouTube page (streams embedded below), and  on the DCMR twitter via periscope. Those of you who would prefer an audio-only stream can find that on DC Music Review contributor Will Urquhart's Mixlr account.

Ghost Light Coming To The Hamilton On January 20th [POSTPONED]

Updated January 17, 2022:   Ghost Light just announced they have postponed the January portion of their Winter + Spring Tour

Ghost Light kicks off their Winter + Spring Tour at The Hamilton in Washington, DC, on January 20th.  This exceptionally talented and diverse quintet is no stranger to the DMV and we have been lucky enough to see them perform some memorable sets live including a rare acoustic set at The Hamilton back in November 2018.

Formed in 2017, the group brings together five consummately talented artists from across the musical spectrum—guitarists/singers Tom Hamilton and Raina Mullen, pianist Holly Bowling, bassist Dan Africano, and drummer Scotty Zwang—and thrusts them into a wholly new context. The result is a record that transcends the sonic contributions and background of any single member, a collection that’s at once gritty and refined, sprawling and restrained, straightforward and psychedelic.

“When we started this band, all I wanted to do was make the most original sounding music we could possibly come up with,” says Mullen. “Everyone’s tastes and histories were so different from each other that I was really excited to see where the five of us could go as a group.”

Hamilton and Mullen began writing the core of the album in the spring of 2017, focusing solely on instrumental arrangements at first as they chased new sounds and experiences with a little bit of chemical assistance.

The songs they wrote during those sessions were epic and immersive, influenced by a broad array of stimuli from the tense American political atmosphere to classic cinema. They drew on seemingly incongruous influences ("What would it sound like if Sufjan Stevens made a Soundgarden album?") and composed with a filmmakers’ eye, scoring the dynamic scenes in their heads with vivid detail and deep emotion. While many of the tracks would ultimately end up being fleshed out with lyrics, several tunes remained fixed as instrumentals even on the finished album.

A lucky few residents of the DMV may have seen Ghost Light when they performed at the 2021 Peach Festival in Scranton, PA.  For those that were not able to make it or were looking forward to seeing Ghost Light live, this is a great opportunity to see this band perform in a small and beloved D.C. venue.  Listen to the music of Ghost Light as well as find links to tickets below.

David Shaw performs at Union Stage in Washington, DC

David Shaw Closes Out His Solo Tour With A Memorable Union Stage Performance

On Saturday, December 18th, David Shaw and The Ries Brothers played to a packed Union Stage for the final performance of Shaw's maiden solo tour.

The Ries Brothers open up for David Shaw

First to hit the stage was The Ries Brothers out of Clearwater, Florida. This duo was a perfect opener for Shaw. The brothers had a varied and energetic performance that mixed soulful grooves with reggae, ska, acoustic, and hard-hitting rock and roll punctuated by a powerful guitar solo with an equally impressive electric ukulele solo. Having never witnessed a ukulele sounding like a Fender Stratocaster, it certainly left the audience impressed and warmed up for David Shaw.

David Shaw and his band were polished road warriors

When David Shaw and his band hit the stage, the audience let out a triumphant roar as DMV residents have not seen Shaw perform live in the region since The Revivalists performed at The Anthem on February 29, 2020.

Despite this being Shaw's maiden tour with his solo band, the band's sound was locked in, polished, and dynamic.  This neophyte band filled with gifted musicians punched well above their weight for a band that performed a scant sixteen times prior to the Union Stage performance.

Shaw was clearly enjoying the evening from the moment he came on stage and, with an ear-to-ear smile, told the audience, "We got you! We are playing this whole album tonight!"  Shaw performed all of his new songs as if they were second nature to him and he had been performing them for years; perhaps it is because these new songs were deeply personal to him, perhaps it is because Shaw is one of the most charismatic and animated performers of his generation - or maybe a combination of the two!

David Shaw and his band were polished road warriors

Shaw was nearly inseparable from his beloved acoustic guitar given to him by his Aunt Linda throughout the evening. Shaw wielded this guitar throughout the performance like Roy Hobbs brandished his beloved bat "Wonderboy" in The Natural.

Shaw, who typically performs to thousands and gallivants across large stages, reshaped his boundless energy to suit the small venue atmosphere of this tour.  Within a few songs of hitting the stage, he took off his signature leather jacket, exposing his muscular physique, and sang within inches of his adoring fans. This venue was so small and cozy that when Shaw sang, "Girl, I miss you soo much" many audience members might have thought that he was singing these lyrics to them.

Whatever energy Shaw kept in reserve from his main performance, he undoubtedly saved for a memorable and powerful encore for the last encore of his 17 date tour.  The encore started with a solo version of "Soulfight" as Shaw and "Wonderboy" performed to a moved crowd. Next, the audience experienced a sultry "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star before Shaw let his hair down, literally, and lit the final fuze for an explosive one-two "I Can Hear You (Calling On Me)," "Got Me Feeling Good" finale.

As delighted fans left Union Stage, some pondered which solo songs would make their way into future Revivalists performances. The future is unknown in so many ways; however, we will long remember David Shaw's final lyrics echoing in our head:

David Shaw

All my troubles long gone

All night all night long

You got me feeling good

You got me feeling good....

David Shaw

David Shaw Debut Album Tour - Union Stage December 18, 2021
Concert News

David Shaw (of The Revivalists) Coming To Union Stage

The last time David Shaw appeared in Washington, DC, was February 29th, 2020, when The Revivalists performed at The Anthem. On December 18, 2021 Shaw returns the DMV when he performs at Union Stage supported by The Ries Brothers.  A lot has happened since then, but artists like Shaw have used their time off the road to look inward, find inspiration, use their time for charitable causes, and create new music.

Earlier this year, Shaw released his debut self-titled solo album. With this new album and new music under his belt, Shaw follows the direction of his own internal compass as a solo artist, riling up his raw rock 'n' roll impulses as he opens up like never before as a lyricist, poet, and storyteller. True to his songwriting style, Shaw's album comprises of many high-spirited, danceable, and soulful tracks. Songs like "Got Me Feeling Good" are sure to make you feel good and get up and dance when you hear it - and imagine what that song is going to sound like live in an intimate setting.

To kick off the holiday season, Shaw recently released a tender cover of the holiday classic “Blue Christmas,” most famously performed by Elvis Presley.  The harmonious reimagining strips back the soulful pop ballad and transforming its simplistic ambiance with delicate guitars and Shaw's crooning vocals. We can only hope he can croon this timeless classic to the audience at Union Stage.

While fans are used to Shaw performing to thousands of adoring fans, the Union Stage performance is a rare opportunity to see Shaw up close at a 450 person capacity venue. Although Union Stage show goers will not have the chance to see Shaw dart across a a giant stage like a bumblebee, this also provides an intimate setting for Shaw to reach out into the crowd and connect with his audience.  This is a rare opportunity to see Shaw perform in a small venue as we see him pluck each chord on his acoustic guitar, dance upon the stage, and to especially enjoy his new songs alongside David Shaw fans and fellow Revheads.

Please listen to his wonderful album below and purchase tickets to this performance because this show is likely to sell out quick!
