WATCH LIVE: Phans for Racial Equity Public Forum and Virtual Concert

Phans for Racial Equity (PHRE) is hosting their first annual retreat this weekend, and we are excited to be helping them webcast the public forum and virtual concert tonight!

Jay Curley of Ben and Jerry's will moderate a discussion from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. about how fans can make the scene more inclusive & support racial justice in the broader world. "In a Minute I'll be PHRE: Origins & Organizing" will also address PHRE's origins, including the "Phish Scene So White: Let's Talk" article, the online backlash, and what that says about the Phish fan community; as well as about PHRE's mission and core activities, including tabling at Phish shows and working with venues to address harassment, and how folks can get involved.

While this is a free event, they are asking attendees to make a contribution to Color of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. Color of Change uses donations to help people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us, moving decision-makers in corporations and government to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America. Blue Ox Live From The Pines Gives a Taste of Festival Life

While plans for festival season 2020 are looking quite differently then they did at the beginning of the year, what is keeping live music junkies going is all of the artists we love streaming from home.  Sadly, most events that were going to be destinations for a lot of us over the next few months have already been cancelled and/or rescheduled for 2021.

Blue Ox Music Festival however, is one that is still holding out hope for the powers that be to give the green light to their new August date.  In the meantime, organizers of the festival are throwing something new and fun into the mix, during what was supposed to be the annual events original date.

Pert Near Sandstone, the group that hosts the festival up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin at the Whispering Pines Campground, is planning to try a new spin on their usual fun next month.   Coinciding with the release of their newest album Rising Tide, due out on June 12th, the band will convene at the beloved site of the festival to play together while fans watch from home.  Playing music new and old for fans to enjoy from the comfort of their own setups is what this event is all about, however far or near that might be.

A press release that went out last week describes what is to be a two-part celebration of music brought to you by the Blue Ox Family:

Blue Ox Music Festival: Live from the Pines will be setting up its stage to bring some of your favorite Bluegrass, Americana, and Roots artists performing live from the music festival grounds. Pert Near Sandstone will perform two nights onstage, along with artist friends Charlie Parr, Lissie, and Them Coulee Boys. With Sam Bush, Del McCoury, The Travelin’ McCourys, Lillie Mae, and Molly Tuttle, performing sets from their hometowns. The top shelf artists are thrilled to come out and support Blue Ox Music Festival: Live from the Pines and at the same time celebrate the new release of Pert Near Sandstone’s new album.

Blue Ox Music Festival: Live From Home can be viewed on the official Blue Ox Music Festival YouTube and Facebook channels and will be streamed in partnership with JamGrass TV, The Current, Bell’s Brewery, Northern Sun Productions and the host, Blue Ox Music Festival.

The live broadcast is free to all viewers, yet contributions are encouraged and appreciated, with part of the proceeds going to the performing artists, as well as benefiting the Cleghorn Lions Club, National T.T.T. Society, and the Chippewa Valley Technical College Radiology Department – which are organizations that have graciously volunteered for Blue Ox over the years; and the Feed My People Food Bank of Wisconsin.

Donations are accepted on the following platforms:

**Although Blue Ox Music Festival: Live from the Pines will be broadcast from Whispering Pines Campground, there will be no audience on-site for the performance.**

The great folks over at Blue Ox Music Festival have prepared a wonderful playlist to get us all prepared, excited, and ready for the upcoming Blue Ox Live.

Wolf Trap Cancels Their 2020 Summer Season

The Washington DC Metro Area is filled with National Treasures. Usually, these treasures are found by way of buildings, monuments, and artifacts. There is one National Treasure that stands out uniquely among them all - Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. This venue is so much more than merely two performance venues; the Filene Center and The Barns. Wolf Trap is also a 117-acre national park and is the only national park dedicated to hosting performing arts.

This venue is more than just a local treasure filled with accolades and pedigrees. It is our hometown venue that shines brightest during the summer months and is enjoyed by everyone in our community. It is the venue that so many local children experience their first outdoor concert or witness a performance at Theatre-in-the-Woods. This is also the venue where so many see a movie accompanied by the music of a full orchestra. We cannot tell you how many times we have experienced a picnic upon its gentle green slopes and taken in a performance by world-class musicians or orchestras. Seeing a concert at Wolf Trap feels like a right of passage to many and an annual tradition to most.

Today, Wolf Trap announced that they have canceled their entire 2020 Summer Season. Like you, we will surely miss our summer pilgrimage to Vienna, VA, and take in the experience that is Wolf Trap. Wolf Trap has established the Music Moves Us Fund to help the venue during these difficult times, and we look to the 2021 Season when Wolf Trap celebrates their 50th Anniversary of the Filene Center.

Their announcment follows below.

Wolf Trap Summer 2020 Season Update
Wolf Trap Summer 2020 Season Update

For the first time in Wolf Trap's nearly 50-year history, our summer concert season will not come to fruition. Performances at the Filene Center and Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods, scheduled to take place from May through September, are cancelled due to the on-going Covid-19 pandemic. The complete announcement can be found on the Wolf Trap website.

Wolf Trap is a beloved summer tradition, bringing artists and audiences together for memorable and meaningful performing arts experiences in a setting unlike any other. While concerts will not be taking place in the coming months, Wolf Trap Foundation continues to be an active resource for our community. We are planning new ways to keep you connected to the Barns and the Park via digital distribution of newly created content over the coming weeks and months. Wolf Trap Opera's summer residency program has been refashioned to honor our commitment to artistic training and professional development for the very best emerging talent in the field. And in keeping with our core belief that the arts play a vital role in the development of young lives, the Foundation's signature early childhood arts education programs continue to be valuable resources for teachers, parents, caregivers, and children in the DC metro area and beyond through digital and virtual platforms.

We deeply value the commitment you made to join us for a landmark season. You will receive an email later today with several options regarding tickets.

Many have asked how you can help support Wolf Trap Foundation during this time of need. We have been humbled and inspired by this question, and to that end, have created the Music Moves Us Fund to help mitigate the painful financial impact of the Summer 2020 season cancellation. We encourage you to consider turning your tickets into support for this fund. Your 100% tax-deductible donation will fuel groundbreaking education and community initiatives, promote next-generation artists, and sustain the Foundation's operations to ensure the future of music for all. You can also exchange your tickets for a Wolf Trap gift card towards future purchases, or you can ask for a refund.

Thank you for your good wishes and support. We look forward to welcoming you back to Wolf Trap together to enjoy live performances once it is permissible to gather together. We are especially excited to mark Wolf Trap's 50th Anniversary of the Filene Center in 2021, and we can't wait to celebrate with you.

Stay safe. Stay healthy.

Your friends at
Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts

"We've heard from many folks how much it's going to hurt not being at DelFest this Memorial Day weekend, so we hope this helps a little. We're grateful to have a dedicated crew that has captured some great moments of DelFest through the years, and are looking forward to reliving some of these great moments with you ourselves. There Is No Place Like DOME And HOME – Looking Back on Domefest 2018 And Previewing Homefest!

DC Music Review exists in a strange world right now - everyone exists in these surreal and challenging times and tries to navigate as best they can. We, like you, thrive in music experiences, especially music festivals. We find ourselves looking back on some of the best times that we experienced with gratitude and appreciation, and looking ahead with equal disappointment that we won’t get to enjoy those same experiences in the coming months.

The festival that always reminds us of the massive efforts to put on a music festival is Domefest.  Each year for the past ten years, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong has organized Domefest and grown their festival into one of the most beloved in the DMV region. The amount of love, hard work, and personal touches that the band puts into this event has no match. We have seen how the band rolls up their sleeves to carefully assemble the best concert experience for their fans, and themselves. We have personally witnessed lead singer and frontman Greg Ormont work at the festival gate. We have heard how in 2018, guitarist Jeremy Schon was on the phone ordering another truckload of gravel so that cars could make it up a challenging hill. We saw bassist Ben Carrey lead a yoga class early in the mornings. And we saw drummer Alex Petropulos and his bandmates camping alongside their beloved Flock. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong did not make a music festival where artists roamed in secluded locations and ate in air-conditioned tents far away from fans. Domefest has always been about community and a beautiful coexistence for everyone attending.  We truly believe in Domefest's motto - "There Is No Place Like DOME!"

In an alternate timeline, we would be furiously writing an article and culling photos to bring you the best concert coverage as we tried to report on this year’s festival, held atop Marvin's Mountaintop in Masontown, West Virginia, but on March 20th we heard the sad announcement of Domefest's cancellation.

They say “the show must go on,” but they also say “safety first.” With that at heart, we’ve made the tough decision to cancel Domefest 2020 in order to prioritize the health and safety of our beloved festival family. This has been the most difficult moment in our eleven year history and we hope you understand how much it pains us to make this call. All purchases will be refunded automatically over the next week, please check your email for more information, including our 2021 loyalty program and option to donate your refund to Sweet Relief Musicians Fund to provide assistance to music industry professionals during this unprecedented time. Rest assured, we will get through these crazy times together, regroup as a family, and come back even stronger in 2021. Stay safe out there, we’ll see you next year!

But only a few short days ago, we were delighted to hear that the band will be putting on Homefest, A Virtual Flock Party!

We’re thrilled to announce Homefest, a three-night digital music festival taking place on June 11-13, 2020 featuring five sets by Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and more artists TBA! In addition to livestream performances, fans (aka “homies”) will have access to a full schedule of community-focused virtual events, workshops and exclusive content. Early bird streaming passes are on sale now at homefest.us. Fans also have the opportunity to purchase limited edition merchandise as well as High Flyer Packages for special VIP perks, including virtual happy hour with Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, signed setlists from Homefest and more. For more information on Homefest, visit homefest.us and stay tuned to Domefest’s and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong’s social media pages for updates. You didn’t think a global pandemic would keep us from celebrating the people we love, did you?!

So this year, we will lovingly look back on past editions of Domefest, while at the same time, we’ll look forward to gathering the Flock virtually to keep the spirit of those amazing weekends alive. Normally we would greet one another at Domefest with the greeting of "Hello Domie!" but this summer, we look forward to greeting you with a "Hey Homie!"

Homefest Preliminary Lineup

Previous coverage of Domefest and more information on Homefest can be found below.

HOMEFEST

The Original Article was written by Matthew Bowers and published on May 23, 2018

A good music festival can be just as much about the patrons as it is the bands that are playing. Sometimes you’re lucky enough to find the perfect mix of the two. When that happens, it creates a truly harmonious feeling that every single attendee will take with them even after they leave the festival grounds. This pretty much sums up what Domefest is every year.

There was nothing but love of Funk and all the bands at the 9th Domefest.

There was nothing but love of Funk and all the bands at the 9th Domefest.

This would be the 9th version of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong’s annual event, and it would prove to be the biggest and best one so far. With a sellout crowd of 1500 smiling faces ready to dance and have a good time, this flock would provide more than enough sunshine despite the rainy conditions that would persist throughout the fest.

The opening Thursday night music would get the weekend started off with a bang The Magic Beans, Formula 5, and the Strange Machines warmed up the hungry crowd on the main stage while Shwizz took the set break duties on the side stage. Of course, this is the Pigeons’ festival, and they let everyone know who the headliners were when they took the stage Thursday night. Playing to the theme of “Throwback Thursday,” the band’s only one set show of the weekend would not disappoint. This was also lead guitarist Jeremy Schon’s actual birthday, so fittingly the band started off the set with some birthday wishes. Most notably in this set was the bustout of two songs, "Candy" and "Dutchmaster", both of which hadn’t been played since 2012, and 2011 respectively. Just to pull the curtain back on this moment for the readers a little, there’s a very good friend of mine (and the band’s) named Mike. He is quite probably Pigeons fan number 1, and "Dutchmaster" was his golden goose that he had basically resigned to the band never playing again. So when they called him out by name, and dedicated the song to him, it was one of those special band/fan moments that you just can’t help but smile and feel good about. After the Pigeons set, the Mantras would take the crowd deep on the late night stage well into the night. Needless to say, despite the wetness and mud, day 1 was a great indicator of what the rest of the weekend would entail.

The Magic Beans

The Magic Beans

Friday would bring more rain, and mud, but more importantly more great music and good vibes. I’ve never seen a festival crowd happier to be out in the rain and sloshing around in the mud. It seemed like a literal afterthought on everyone’s mind and that feeling was infectious. It was rainy in the campground, but sunny in our hearts.

The music on Friday afternoon would feature Flux Capacitor, Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers, West End Blend, and Headless Robot. Mateo Monk and Cycles would take care of music during the setlist breaks, save for one setbreak featuring Schwa, which is the side project of Pigeons bassist Ben Carrey. Broccoli Samurai would set the stage for the first two-set P4 show of the weekend.

Night 2 of Domefest right as Greg's voice began to give out.

Night 2 of Domefest right as Greg's voice began to give out.

As the first Pigeons set started it started to become apparent that something wasn’t right with Greg Ormont's voice. He basically let the crowd sing the whole first verse of “Poseidon” before it was clear that he wouldn’t be able to keep singing without completely losing his voice for the weekend. Pushing through the rest of the first set with superb versions of “Schwanthem” and “King Kong,” and even a bustout of the Jefferson Airplane classic “White Rabbit” which would be sung by drummer Alex Petropulos (impressively nailed at that).

West End Blend's horns joined PPPP for some epic jams on Friday night.

West End Blend's horns joined PPPP for some epic jams on Friday night.

During setbreak we were all wondering how the second set would play out without a lead singer. Would they switch up vocals? Play a set of only instrumentals? Will Greg just keep trying to sing with a raspy voice? All those questions would be answered within about 10 minutes of the second set opening song “Whirled.” It became pretty clear once they started really getting deep in the jam what was going to happen, and it was pretty amazing to watch (and hear). They would take the song on a 60+ minute ride, making it the second time in their career that they’ve played a single song set (The first was on 4-15-18). This is a must listen for any fan of improvisational music; there really aren’t many bands that can keep a jam interesting for an hour. This one felt like something they had been working on for a while, which is the true measure of a great jam in my opinion. They would encore with one of my favorite of their instrumental tunes, “Avalanche.”

The Magic Beans would light up the late night stage on Friday, and they would not disappoint. Definitely a highlight of the weekend for me. This was only the second time I had seen them and now I know why so many people talk about them. They are a very promising band that everyone should keep an eye on.

Squaring the Circle

Squaring the Circle

After some much needed rest, the final day of the festival would begin bright and early with Baltimore’s own Squaring the Circle opening up the main stage. The funky dance party would continue all day with bands like Ernie Johnson from Detroit, Backup Planet, and the McLovins. Baltimore power trio Deaf Scene would take up most of the set break duties on Saturday, aside from a special setbreak set by Pigeons front man “Scrambled” Greg Ormont.

All day people were wondering if Greg would try to sing at any point, the answer for this set at least, was that he would not. Using handwritten signs as props to speak to the crowd, he let them know that he had “lost his voice, so I’m just gonna jam.” And Jam he did, complete with a pretty impressive tap dance for good measure.

Mungion

Mungion

Mungion would set the stage for the Pigeons final show of the weekend. It was the first time I had seen these guys, and I can’t wait to see them again. One of the great things about Domefest is how careful the band is about picking their support. Every time I’ve been to a Domefest I’ve come away with at least one new band that makes me want to seek out their music and see them live when I can. Mungion was one of those this weekend.

After drinking an entire honey bear, Greg and his voice were ready to go on Night 3.

After drinking an entire honey bear, Greg and his voice were ready to go on Night 3.

As the crowd waited for the Pigeons’ weekend finale, there was much speculation about Greg’s voice and if he’d be able to handle two sets of vocal duties. Miraculously, after saying he drank an “entire honey bear” before the show, he was back to his old form. Belting out crowd favorites like “Melting Lights” and “Penguins" the band definitely seemed to feed off the energy of their newly rejuvenated front man. The second set was maybe my favorite set of music from the weekend. The section of “Dome People > Su Casa > Horizon” felt particularly poetic. Dome people is of course about the festival itself and has been in the band’s rotation since Domefest’s inception, followed by Su Casa with its chorus of “This is your home now” and then Horizon’s “Celebrate the people you love,” this seemed like a very intentional musical hug from the band to the crowd, thanking them for all of the love and support that made the event so special. Another great highlight from this set was the debut of a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Shine on You Crazy Diamond.” Complete with a 4 to the floor funky jam for good measure. I love when a band takes a cover and makes it their own, and that is exactly what they did with this one. Ending with a raucous version of “The Liquid” and encoring with an incredibly fun “Julia > Super Mario > Julia” sandwich, they would put their triumphant stamp of success on this set, and the whole weekend.

The final night of the festival would see a double dose of late night sets coming from The Fritz, and Vibe and Direct. Both bands were absolutely great, they took full advantage of being the last acts on the bill and seemed to give all of the weekend warriors a second wind all the way to sunrise.

To sum it up, Domefest is one of those very special small festivals. The hard work the band puts into this fest every year really shows in the product they put out. They are truly dedicated to making sure the Domefest experience is a great one for every single ticket holder. The band really cares about their fans, and the fans in turn show all of that love right back. Just to let everyone know, the band members literally work at the festival despite headlining it. When I arrived to the main gate, one of the first people I saw was Greg with a walkie talkie making sure everyone was getting in alright and things were running smoothly. This is something that people notice, and it goes without saying that all of us genuinely appreciate the effort. The flock is a great group of people too. Everyone all weekend was helping each other if they needed it, pushing cars out of the mud, helping people back to their campsites if they were struggling, offering dry clothes, spreading hay around to make it less slippery. It’s always really amazing to see a large group of people that genuinely cares about each other’s well-being and happiness. As the band grows, inevitably so will the festival. Hopefully all those same good loving vibes will continue to grow bigger every year too, and we can all continue to gather together each May to celebrate the people we love.

In The Middle Of Difficulty Lies Opportunity – How One DMV Crew Keeps The Music Playing

Contributed by Avik Ray, the co-founder of thecrossover.tv, a DC based YouTube channel that brings artists together to create unique musical experiences.

Our show is based on the fundamental belief that as a society, we can be creative through collaboration with others and that there is no better platform to show that than through music. We film our episodes live and in person and it is an unexplainable pleasure to feel the electricity in the room when artists perform together. We had been filming our episodes at 7DrumCity and were excited about an upcoming collaboration at the iconic Inner Ear Studios.

It was all going great, we had started to build a portfolio of performances on our YouTube channel with musicians from the DC area, collaborating with other artists to create some great music videos. We were hitting our stride and had booked a ton of local artists to film for our show when suddenly everything came to a grinding halt courtesy of the virus that must not be named.

With the pandemic in full flow we knew that it would be some time before we could get out and film our shows again as we had been doing.

thecrossover.tv - The Lockdown Sessions
thecrossover.tv - The Lockdown Sessions

Despite the chaos, somewhere in this vacuum, we felt there must be an opportunity. As if overnight, the playing field had been leveled. Artists around the world with huge recording contracts all of a sudden found themselves vying for attention with independent artists through Facebook live streams and a whole host of other creative solutions to getting their music to new audiences. If you are talented, all of a sudden there were no boundaries to being heard.

Video is our chosen medium for dissemination of content and we also felt there was an opportunity to pivot and find a new way of differentiating ourselves. We tried out different ideas and tested a number of platforms to see if we could record live remotely and continue with a bastardized version of our current format but the latency issues made it very difficult to guarantee a high quality output. We saw bands using apps like Acapella which was pretty cool but being film guys, we wanted more flexibility. Our channel is built around the idea of collaboration and bringing artists together, it seemed like there was no time more important than now for that as well as an opportunity to try something we had been thinking about for a while: have artists perform together from anywhere.

With the constraints of not being able to film or capture audio in person, we decided we had to rely on the artists to do that for us, guiding them through the process, helping with shot framing and the technical aspects of recording. The track would be passed around in a "postal service" style with the next artist adding their layer to the track. With the folks that responded to our initial call for artists, we also had the opportunity to partner artists together that would not normally have had the chance to cross paths. In every difficult moment, there is an opportunity to do something special.

We started with two streams straight away and there was a very special buzz. One stream started with our friends Andrew Burleson and Joey Jenkins from the DC band Most Savage Gentlemen who we teamed up with Lil' Maceo, a national recording artist who has played saxophone with the likes of Prince and Alicia Keys. With the recent passing of Bill Withers, the team found common ground and wanted to pay tribute to the great man with a cover of "Use Me." Andrew had the idea to call in Jeff Madonna from LilWhiskeyKids and told me "this guy's voice will really blow your hair back," (or something to that effect!) and he was not wrong. Maceo recently moved to DC from NY and recruited his former band members from the tri-state area and the squad was complete.

It is always difficult to go first, but we are very proud of the artists that helped bring volume one of "the lockdown sessions" to life. We learned a lot in terms of process for these types of videos, made new friends in the process and had a great time doing so.

“I had a great opportunity to collaborate with some DC area musicians for thecrossover.tv’s lockdown sessions, which has been helping area artists collaborate and create in the midst of mandated seclusion. I’m honored to be a part of such a cool project.”

    // Jon Tyler Wiley

We simultaneously started the second stream with DC’s very own looping violinist Bellweather Bayou, bassist Rob Lee from Sweet Pickles and multi-instrumentalist Jon Tyler Wiley. Jon had been on our show with Ashleigh Chevalier and pulled out one of the most epic guitar solos we have had on our show so far. Sweet Pickles were due to record with us at Inner Ear studios just one week after everything shut down so we were especially disappointed not to film them but happy that they joined us for this new initiative. We knew of Bellweather Bayou through Instagram and had always been interested in working with her and were amazed by the demo she sent us.

Our thoughts were that each of these groups would record covers but were pleasantly surprised when our initial Zoom meeting for stream two went down the path of writing an original song. The song is a credit to the talent of the three musicians who have produced a masterpiece at a distance called "Try." The artists also requested that all promotional efforts be used to drive donations to DC Central Kitchen, a local non-profit doing great work in our community.

“So glad to have been a part of this, and to see this song come together like it never could have if I was working alone!”

    // Bellwether Bayou

We don’t know what the future looks like or how we might all collaborate going forward, all we know it is not easy working alone and this was a whole lot of fun.

Even through challenging times, we are always looking to turn it up a notch in terms of new ways for artists to create together. We already have the next episodes of the lockdown sessions in production but if you are an artist in the DMV and are able to record from home, please send a mail to crossovertvglobal@gmail.com. We would love to find a way to have you collaborate with new friends you don't know yet. Stay safe and subscribe to our YouTube channel if you haven’t already 🙂

DMV Native Lauren Calve Performs Virtually At Sixth & I Today

If you know anything about DC Music Review, you know that we glow with pride about the incredibly talented musicians that occupy the DMV.  One such artist that we glisten with pride about is Northern Virginia native Lauren Calve.

Calve evolkes Patty Griffin’s dynamic voice, Bonnie Raitt’s smoky aura, and Ben Harper’s unique slide style. Her compositions find their ground in the sounds of blues and Americana, guitar and lap steel, but their strength lies in how they go beyond tradition into innovative melodies, structures and arrangements that define their originality.  Calve recently released “Better Angels” off her upcoming Wildfire EP, out June 23, a song that was originally inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural address on the eve of the Civil War but has now found an overwhelming new meaning to Calve in the face of the current pandemic.

She created a special tribute video to honor some of the front line workers in her DMV community helping in the fight against the virus.

Broadcasted live from the artists’ living room, this show is part of Sixth & I Historic Synagogue's new weekly concert series designed to shine a spotlight on the best local talent. Stream this set for free on our Facebook page and stay tuned as we announce more Living Room Sessions.

Be sure to see Calve perform at 4 PM later today.  For more information, please see the Facebook Event or RSVP to the event on Sixth & I's Event Page.
