Twiddle Kicks Off Their 2020 Winter Tour At The 9:30 Club in Washington DC

Vermont jam band stalwarts, Twiddle, return to the 9:30 Club on January 25th, as they kick off their 2020 Winter Tour.

Twiddle has relentlessly toured the United States for well over a decade now and are no strangers to the region. They have graced the stages of The 8x10, Gypsy Sally's, The Jefferson, LOCKN, The Anthem, and the 9:30 Club, to mention just a few. The quartet last appeared in Washington DC in October 2018 as the performed two spectacular and unique Holloween inspired nights of music. (See article below or click here).

Twiddle Winter 2020 Tour

2019 was marked by some truly unforgettable performances, which included co-headlining Red Rocks Amphitheatre with Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and tearing up the summer festival circuit that included a set at LOCKN with Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, Eric Krasno, and Jon Popper of Blues Traveler. The band took their foot off the gas pedal of constant touring and had a reasonably relaxed Fall 2019 tour.

We look forward to welcoming Twiddle back to Washington DC. We can expect Mihali Savoulidis's blistering guitar solos and reggae-inspired tunes, Zdenek Gubb's memorable "Gubb-Dump" bass solos, Ryan Dempsey transfixing us with the sheer beauty of his piano solos, and Brook Jordan holding down the rhythm all together as he gets into bass and piano battles with his bandmates.

As a special bonus to this performance, Scrambled Greg of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong will open for Twiddle. "Scrambled" Greg Ormont is no stranger to Washington DC as he is a beloved funk hometown hero in Baltimore, MD. We are excited to see Scrambled Greg perform on stage as he is certain to mesmerize audience members as he loops, layers, and assembles stunning music before you very eyes.

DC Music Review has no doubt that Twiddle is coming off their Boston New Year's Eve performance fully charged and raring to go.

TAUK Rocks Richmond to the Core at The Broadberry [Photos]

TAUK

Instrumental rock quartet, TAUK, began their 2-night NYE run with a headlining show at The Broadberry in Richmond, VA on December 30, 2019. Good vibes and revelry permeated through the venue as TAUK presented their signature heavy sound to the delight of a capacity crowd. The band explored multi-dimensional sonic soundscapes with an impressive level of musicianship. The band – Matt Jalbert (guitar), Isaac Teel (drums), Alric "A.C." Carter (keys), Charlie Dolan (bass) – mesh with the greatest of ease and ooze with chemistry, a quality developed over years of touring together. The sound was pristine and only augmented by the beautiful light design provided by the band's LD, John Olsen. Fans roared throughout most of the evening and TAUK loved every minute of it. It was a well-deserved reception for a band that has evolved and continues to reach new heights.

Don't miss them in 2020 as they embark on their "Squad Tour" that features shows with RCA (Rob Compa of Dopapod, Chris DeAngelis and Adrian Tramontano of Kung Fu), The Motet, Eminence Ensemble, Evanoff and more.

Gov’t Mule Welcomes Guests For a Bit of Allman Joy in Stunning Show at The Met Philly

Gov't Mule began their annual NYE run in Philadelphia, PA at the gorgeous, newly-renovated theater, The Met. The band, celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2019, welcomed a variety of guests for a raucous night of rock music in the City of Brotherly love on Friday, December 27, 2019.

Gov't Mule ft. Ron Holloway

Band leader Warren Haynes, joined by his mates Matt Abts (drums), Jorgen Carlsson (bass) and Danny Louis (keys, guitar, horns) were in fine form for two sets that thrilled the Mule faithful. The theater proved a fantastic venue for Mule, beautifully illuminated by gorgeous light design provided by John Colligan (light director) and Pulse Lighting (light designer). DC legend Ron Holloway (saxophone) joined the quartet at the end of the first set for "Devil Likes It Slow" and a rousing take on Robert Johnson's "32/20 Blues."

Haynes emerged solo for the second set and serenaded the crowd with the Son House blues standard "Grinnin' In Your Face." The Better Half Singers, consisting of Machan Taylor and Mini Carlsson provided supporting vocals on "Million Miles From Yesterday" and The Box Tops classic , "The Letter." The party was just getting started as Gov't Mule welcomed Johnny Stachela (guitar), Berry Oakley Jr. (bass), and John Ginty (organ) from The Allman Betts Band, who opened the night's festivities, for a soul-quenching "Statesboro Blues" (Allman Brothers Band).

Duane Betts

Holloway returned for the extended, set-closing "Blind Man In The Dark" > "Trane" > Blind Man In The Dark sandwich that featured a flavorful sax vs. guitar duel between he and Warren. Mule saved the best for last with a truly thundering rendition of "Whipping Post" that featured a searing sit-in by Duane Betts (guitar), at times looking and sounding like the spitting image of his father, Dickey, on his beautiful gold top Les Paul. The crowd gave a deserving ovation to the band and to Betts for an early new year's treat and a show that will be remembered for many years to come.

John Kadlecik’s Sold Out “Fare Thee Well DC” Run at Gypsy Sally’s

John Kadlecik's "Fare Thee Well" run of shows to close out Gypsy Sally's this weekend is very sold out, but if you missed your chance to take part in analog, you will now have the option to join us digitally (hat tip to Gina Sobel for the analogy). We at DC Music Review are happy to announce that we will be providing a free webcast all weekend as we say goodbye to a venue that has touched so many hearts in the DMV community and around the country.

John Kadlecik arguably put Gypsy Sally's on the map with his first run of shows there on consecutive Tuesdays in 2014, not too long after they opened their doors. Since then, he returned numerous times every year, and his performances - both the Jerry Garcia recreations and his original works - became a staple at the venue.  So, it is fitting that he will lead the closeout run and provide the soundtrack for our fond farewells.

We know that so many more people than can fit in that venue want to be a part of these last shows on January 3, 4, and 5. If you cannot be there in person for whatever reason, please join us on our webcast via the DC Music Review facebook page,  on the DC Music Review YouTube page (streams embedded below), and  on the DCMR twitter via periscope. Those of you who would prefer an audio-only stream can find that on DC Music Review contributor Will Urquhart's Mixlr account.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra Ignites Capital One Arena With Christmas Extravaganza [PHOTO RECAP]

Trans-Siberian Orchestra treated a packed Capital One Arena to their unique rock/metal show – Christmas Eve and Other Stories – on Monday, December 23. The performance included a bevy of talented vocalists, a small orchestra, searing guitar solos and a massive light and pyrotechnic display that stunned the crowd. For 2.5 hours, the talented powerhouse group took us on a holiday-esque journey that featured a mix of ballads, acoustic numbers and their signature, hard-rocking Christmas songs. The band boasts a monstrous light rig – complete with moving panels, three video screens, lasers and a hoard of pyrotechnic blasters that packed some serious heat. We were lucky to enjoy the second of two shows last Monday. Please enjoy our gallery of photos of this amazing performance and visual display!

Gov’t Mule Kicks Off NYE Run at The Met Philly on Friday

Blues rock titans, Gov't Mule, begin their annual Mule Year's Eve run this Friday with their debut at The Met in Philadelphia, PA. The powerhouse quartet, fronted by Warren Haynes, welcome special guests – the Allman Betts Band – for what is sure to be a special evening of revelry and celebration.

The Met. Photo by Jordan August.

Philly has been a consistent destination for the band around this time of year, typically rocking out at the historic Tower Theatre in Upper Darby. This time, Mule opted for the recently renovated venue – a former opera house – that boasts two balconies, 25 bars, 3,400 capacity and gorgeous interior architectural design.

Gov't Mule consists of the aforementioned Haynes (guitar, vocals) and rounded out by Matt Abts (drums) Danny Louis (keys, guitar, trombone, trumpet, vocals) and Jorgen Carlsson (bass). The band recently celebrated its 25-year anniversary – a major accomplishment considering the untimely passing of Mule's original bassist Allen Woody in 2000.

Tickets are available for The Met show here and start at $39.50+ fees. . Gov't Mule heads north on Saturday, December 28 to play The Palace Theatre in Waterbury, CT before returning to their home venue, The Beacon Theatre in New York City on December 30 + 31.

Ben Williams Gears Up For Annual Hometown “Holiday Musical Extravaganza”

Grammy-winning Ben Williams is gearing up to play his annual hometown “Holiday Musical Extravaganza” this Thursday, December 26 at The Hamilton Live.

The D.C. based artist has become one of the most acclaimed and versatile bassists in modern jazz of this decade, earning praise from publications such as NPR, New York Times, and Billboard.

A graduate of the renowned Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Juilliard, Williams has won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and a Grammy Award as a member of guitarist Pat Metheny's Unity Band.

Williams recently announced a worldwide tour in support of his upcoming album I AM A MAN, out February 7. The album’s title is in reference to Memphis’ historic 1968 sanitation-workers strike, where many of the African American men marched through the streets with picket signs reading, “I am a Man” in boldface type. Williams explains that the messaging reminded him of how we use hashtags today to help ignite activism such as Black Lives Matter and MeToo movements.

Tickets for the "Holiday Musical Extravaganza" range from $25-$45. Come out to support native Washingtonian Ben Williams and join DC Music Review in celebrating the holidays!
