Roosevelt Collier Releases Debut Solo Album ‘Exit 16’

Roosevelt Collier, affectionately penned “The Dr.,” has built up his reputation as a master of the pedal steel guitar. The Florida native has played alongside legends such as the Allman Brothers, the Funky Meters, and Los Lobos, among others. After years of jamming, the Dr. himself has released his very own debut album, Exit 16.

Comprised of seven unique and intricate tracks, Exit 16 is a powerhouse of an album, taking listeners on a epic rollercoaster of a journey. Tracks vary from medium to fast paced, but one constant throughout is excellent musicianship, with Collier (pedal steel and lap steel guitars), Jason JT Thomas (drums), Michael League (bass), and Bobby Sparks (organ and clarinet) working their magic.

I was hooked from the very first notes of “Sun Up Sun Down,” as they reminded me of the soundtrack from the 1977 film Suspiria, scored by Goblin. However, the similarities end there, with the track spiraling into an upbeat, groovy jam session. The first track is a warm and easy welcome into an album that evokes a myriad of emotions. It’s steady and smooth, with a beat that repeats. However, the track continuously builds, with more sounds and urgency added as the song goes on.

When “Happy Feet” kicks off, the pedal steel quickly cues in the drums and begins a fast paced and upbeat song. With the pedal steel squealing in excitement, it really feels as though these instruments are alive, weaving in and out of each other to create the expert sound that Collier has championed. Sometimes instrumental music is key for concentration, but when listening to this track, I had to pause it, for concentrating on anything but the music is an impossible feat.

Further down the track listing, the titular track “Exit 16” leads off with a mysterious repeated note that cues in the remainder of the instruments. Although the tune leads off with hints of funk, the remainder of the jam feels heavier and more pressing, as though trying to convey something important. This falls in line with the notion that this album takes inspiration from Collier’s life. He told Live for Live Music that the album, and consequently this track, are named as such because exit 16 is “literally” where he’s from — “off the turnpike.” As a result, this track and this album are close to his heart, and you can feel the passion in every note.

“Spike” closes out the album, leading off with a rock ’n roll style feedback sound. This track is grungy, edgier than the others. Collier’s ability to make tracks like “Happy Feet” and “Spike” feel so cohesive in the same narrative is a nod to his brilliant talent.

Listening to Roosevelt Collier’s album, I felt my heartbeat accelerate to a very questionable rate, especially for someone sitting in the office on a coffee-less morning. Whether it was due to an unexplained excitement or an urge to move in time with the beat, or some combination of the two, I cannot say. However, what I do know for sure is that Collier plays with such an urgency and passion that this album will leave you breathless.

Each track has its own distinct personality, yet they fit together so cohesively. Perhaps it is the reigning voice of the pedal steel, or perhaps the masterful playing of the musicians. Either way, Exit 16 tells an exciting story bound to stick with you in the coming days.

Galactic Funks Up 9:30 Club with DC’s Own AZTEC SUN

New Orleans funk masters Galactic brought a taste of the French Quarter to DC last weekend, headlining two nights at 9:30 Club. Over a cold and windy weekend, the ever-expanding lineup anchored by virtuoso drummer Stanton Moore and saxophonist Ben Ellman, left fans literally and figuratively blown away. The sold out Saturday show featured the Washington, DC-based ten-piece AZTEC SUN as support.

If you’re unfamiliar with AZTEC SUN, the self-described “funk with soul” band that has been performing in the District for five years, be sure to correct that immediately. In their first performance at DC’s historic nightclub, the band converted more than a few Galactic fans who should be seeing AZTEC SUN play venues around Washington for years to come. Be on the lookout for their debut full-length album later this year, recorded and produced by Alan Evans of Soulive!  AZTEC SUN is a local band on the rise and we hope they’ll be back at 9:30 Club soon.

The DC natives raised the crowd’s energy early in the evening with lead singer Stephane Detchou noting that “our job is to make sure you’re all ready for Galactic” and that their “music for your hip region” would get the crowd limber and ready to go. The band’s 45-minute set featured elements of funk, soul, acid jazz, and Latin music with the call and response of a Go-Go show. AZTEC SUN certainly knew how to work the crowd with their synchronized dance moves, lyrics inspired by the trials and tribulations of the DC Metro’s red line, and sections for audience participation, making them a perfect act to set the table for a raucous dance party to follow.

Galactic kicked off their set with the instrumental “Karate,” a tune that packs a punch with the commanding trombone of Corey Henry. Vocalist Erica Falls joined the band for the next three songs, including “Higher and Higher” off the band’s most recent release, Into the Deep. Falls’s outstanding voice and vibrant stage presence provides another dimension for the band that helped create some of the most enjoyable moments of the show.

Falls left the stage as the band worked its way through Charles Wright’s 1968 tune “65 Bars and a Taste of Soul.” The highlight of the show came in a four song run about 45 minutes into the set, beginning with the title track from Galactic’s 2007 album, From the Corner to the Block, which prominently featured collaborations with rappers and hip-hop artists. Corey Henry filled in for Juvenile on vocals, engaging the crowd in more call and response and kicking the show into high gear. After Erica Falls returned to the stage for “Right On,” the band surprised the crowd with a funky and soulful rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone,” with Falls providing a powerful and exquisite vocal performance. This is a must-hear cover.

A medley of three original songs from their debut album, Coolin’ Off, offered an opportunity to showcase the band’s local roots. With two of its founding members, bassist Robert Mercurio and guitarist Jeff Raines, hailing from the DC suburbs in Chevy Chase, MD, a Galactic show at 9:30 Club without playing “Go Go” could barely be considered a Galactic show at all. Fortunately, the band treated the crowd to Stanton Moore’s driving drum beat and the playful organ groove that pay tribute to DC’s special sort of funk. “Go Go” segued beautifully into “Funky Bird” and its jam on Dizzy Gillespie’s jazz standard “Manteca” to close out the meatiest portion of the set.

Galactic then returned to the traditional New Orleans sound of “Ooh Nah Nay,” and gave Mercurio and Moore each some extended time for a solo before inviting Erica Falls out for two additional songs to close out the set. An encore of the instrumental “Cineramoscope” and “Going Down Slowly” with Falls served as the exclamation point at the end of one funky evening!

The band seemed to really feed off the crowd’s energy, tweeting out their appreciation to their DC fans the next day.

Thanks to Galactic’s crew, the staff at 9:30 Club, and AZTEC SUN for allowing DC Music Review to live stream both of these outstanding sets of music. Be sure to check out our Livestream page for many more recordings and webcasts to come!

Sol Roots Releases New Single, ‘Forgiveness’ ft. Phil Wiggins [Single Review]

Renowned DC-area guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Sol Roots recently released a new single titled 'Forgiveness' ft. harmonica legend Phil Wiggins in anticipation of a new album later this year. The song was recently featured in the CD Sampler of the March issue of Relix and is an exciting release for the accomplished DC artist.

Sol is backed by a rhythm section of veteran bandmates Andreas Holstrom (bass) and Scott Rabino (drums) who provide a tight groove on the upbeat track. Wiggins beautifully weaves his harmonica phrasing behind the band as Sol's displays smooth vocal stanzas. "When I was on the verge of going insane... I found forgiveness" he laments, as he sings of redemption and finding oneself.

The song has a positive feel as the band's chemistry is apparent as Wiggins demonstrates his harp-playing pedigree several impressive solos. Sol provides some intricate guitar playing but largely leaves the door open for Wiggins to go off, at one point urging him to "go ahead."

The track is a promising release from Sol Roots, who can be seen live in the DMV in venues like The Hamilton, JV's and JoJo Bar, where he has a weekly residency on Sunday nights. Check out 'Forgiveness' at https://solroots.bandcamp.com and purchase the single for $1. DC Music Review will bring you any updates regarding the upcoming album!

'Forgiveness' was recorded at Pickup Productions and Satori Studios and mixed at Satori Studios.

Sol Roots band performs a mix of New Orleans funk, raw blues, energetic rock, deep grooves, and southern soul. The band has shared the stage with groups such as Jon Cleary, Soulive, Dumpstaphunk, Booker T Jones, Eric Lindell, Shemekia Copeland and many more. Sol has toured with many musical legends around the world as part of Music Maker Revue. Sol Roots is an official Home Grown Music Network artist and a "Next Generation" Music Maker Relief Foundation artist. Courtesy of www.solrootsmusic.com.

Washington, D.C. native Phil Wiggins, a Takoma Park, Maryland, resident, blues musician, teacher and artistic director, a two time winner of the prestigious WC Handy Blues Foundation awards, is only the third harmonica player to receive the lifetime honor of an NEA National Heritage Fellowship. Today he is the only living player of the instrument to hold the prestigious honor of being a “Master of Traditional Arts.” Often referred to by its unofficial designation as “Living Cultural Treasure” award, the fellowship honors and preserves the diverse cultural heritage in the United States. Eargasm High Fidelity Earplugs

Did you know that listening to a concert at 100 decibels for only 15 minutes can start to cause hearing loss?

Did you know that many venues sound systems play at or in excess of 100 decibels?

Nothing matches the experience of seeing music live; the roar of the crowd, the lights, guitar solos, and that resonating bass and drum beats that vibrate your clothes and you feel penetrating your chest.

Have you ever left a concert with your ears ringing afterwards? Do you have the annoying sensation of hearing a sound in your ears of ringing, buzzing, or hissing?

DC Music Review loves the sound of live music, but we take caution knowing that too much of a good thing can lead to permanent and irreversible hearing damage and loss. Not only can you have hearing loss but permanent ringing in your ear known as tinnitus.

At DC Music Review we take our music and our ears very seriously.

  • Some members of our staff actually have tinnitus from being too close to speakers for too long.
  • One member of our staff wryly joked "I don't even have ringing in my ears after loud shows anymore, that is probably a problem."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention here is the Noise Exposure Limits for sound exposure per day.

We LOVE music, but also realize that you can hear music without damaging yourself.

This is why we recommend Eargasm High Fidelity Earplugs. We don't just recommend them, many on our team use them at each concert we go to!

What we love most about Eargasm is that not only reduces sound by 21 decibels but it DOES NOT distort the sound of the music. As a side benefit, you hear the music better AND the side conversations by "concert chompers" (a.k.a. Those who go to a concert to talk instead of listen to the music) are greatly reduced.

Gone are the days where you stuff foam marshmallows into your ear and experience a muffled music experience. With Eargasm High Fidelity Earplugs you experience the concert exactly as the product's name implies - in high fidelity.

As a final appeal, although we do recommend Eargasm Earplugs from our own personal experience, you do not have to buy them. But we honestly appeal to you to protect your hearing!

Hot August Music Festival Announces 2018 Lineup

The annual Hot August Music Festival at Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, MD announced most of their 2018 lineup today. The Revivalists will headline and be joined by Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Marcus King Band, Cris Jacobs Band, Psycho Killers, Whiskey Shivers, Nikki Hill, The Dirty Grass Players, Omari Banks, Selwyn Birchwood, and Hall Williams Band. One spot is left to be announced on April 1.

Tickets go on sale on Friday, March 9 and start at $58 for the extra early birds.

Though formerly known as the Hot August Blues Music Festival, 2018 marks the 25th year for this festival, and the experience leads this to be  consistently one of the smoothest run out there. There's two stages that are easy to hop back and forth between, and great sight lines everywhere as the main stage sits at the bottom of a hill.

The Revivalists are no stranger to Oregon Ridge Park. They played the main stage as recently as 2016. and were there the year before. as well. Cris Jacobs, coming off a wave of success, returns for the first time since 2012.

Electric Beethoven Creates A Classical Dance Party At Gypsy Sally’s [Audio/Photos/Video]

Electric Beethoven kicked off their "Maps We Found in the Northeast" tour at Gypsy Sally's on February 21st. This was the first time the band members collectively hit the stage in several months and with the new addition of Josh Rayner on drums, it was an exploration into uncharted territory. Before the band hit the stage, they could be found behind Gypsy Sally's happily engaging the fans and talking about shows and adventures past including their last two appearances in the area at The State Theatre in Falls Church, VA and the 9:30 Club in Washington DC..

The evening began with Virginia-based Definition of One, who's electronic jam dance music set the stage for an explosive night of dancing and musical exploration. Todd Stoops of Electric Beethoven sat in briefly on his Moog with a prelude of what was to come later. It should be noted that Definition of One is an under-represented band who's infectious grooves and music should appear at more venues around the region.

Reed Mathis and Electric Beethoven hit the stage at 9:30PM and began a wonderous interpretation and exploration of Beethoven's music. Thought the evening Reed Mathis (bass), Todd Stoops (keys), Clay Welch (guitar), and Josh Raymer (drums) traversed and jammed within a complex and layered musical landscape of interwoven and interactive jams. Despite a modern take on Beethoven's music, one could not help but recognize the distinct underpinnings of Beethoven melodies played throughout the night by Stoops, Mathis and Welch. The musicians were enjoying themselves, glancing at one another with smiles, experimenting with jams and letting Beethoven's music conduct them. The evening's performance resulted in a modern jam that is new and refreshing and breathed new life into music that is nearly 200 years old.

AZTEC SUN

In 2012 in a simple twist of fate, five musicians, having responded to the same Craigslist ad looking for musicians, met and formed a band. This group then became AZTEC SUN. Since that night, this band has found their voice, their sound, and their fans. The band has since grown in size, and while some of the members have come and gone, one thing remains constant -  an enthusiastic and passionate commitment to “Funk with Soul”.

Today, the band is comprised of: Stephane Detchou (vocals, rhythm guitar), Sara Ghebremichael (vocals), Ryan 'Catch' Sarafolean (keyboards), Ray Lamb (lead guitar), Shane Weckesser (bass), Graham Robertson (baritone saxaphone), Adam Kent (trumpet), Joe Goltz (trombone), and John Heinze (drums).

AZTEC SUN has progressed through the ranks of the DC area's music scene, building one success upon another, evolving their sounds and their stage presence.

Goodman’s Good Music – Concert Picks of the Week – February 26th

Week Of:  February 26-March 4, 2018

Intimate Settings/Big Personalities

Summary:

The theme I'm picking up on this week is that there are a lot of BIG stories, BIG personalities, BIG sounds to be experienced up-close and personal these next few days in the DMV.

DC Music Review Staff Picks:

DC Music Review staff are talking about these heavy hitters:

  • Funk/soul goddess Kendra Foster is a vocal force to be reckoned with, having worked with P-Funk and provided essential backbone vocals on D'Angelo's album Black Messiah. Catch her up-close and person at the most perfect, intimate setting at Blues Alley on Feb 27. Her vocals will fill that room like a warmed heart.
  • Cozy up with a Grammy award winning artist at An Intimate Evening of Songs and Stories with Graham Nash on Feb 27 and 28 at Ram's Head On Stage. Maybe he'll talk about why Crosby, Stills, & Nash names are listed in that order versus alphabetically.  There's got to be a story there.
  • DJ Williams' Shots Fired is an amazing funk rock powerhouse from Los Angeles that has been gaining a lot of attention in Southern California and are about to spread the sound to the masses with a new live record this fall. Catch them with opening band Balkun Brothers as they hit DC up with their sick get-down at Gypsy Sally's on March 1.
  • Jazz a'phish'onados rejoice. Jazz is Phish a collective of Phish appreciators from the jazz scene that have come together to reimagine the music in an instrumental, jazz fusion fashion.  See them at The Broadberry on March 1.
  • You go to see your favorite singer perform but they never show up. What's the back-up band to do? Beloved NY guitarist Scott Metzger, bassist Jon Shaw, and drummer Taylor Floreth, decide to put on their own instrumental improv show, and thus spawned the innovative ensemble known as WOLF! featuring Scott Metzger. And they're coming to Gypsy Sally's on March 2 to give a "daring, evocative, and unpredictable" performance that their fans have grown to love. Serendipity has its benefits.
  • You have two nights, March 2-3, to catch the seminal New Orleans funk band Galactic at the 9:30 Club with DC-native Rob Mercurio on bass. Go to the Friday night show to see Richmond's five-piece instrumental band Butcher Brown opening, and hit the Saturday night show to catch local "funk with soul" favorites AZTEC SUN open the show.

Hidden Gem Shows:

These are the kinds of shows/events that I love to get to. They are often intimate, friendly, neighborhood-feeling, and make me feel lucky to live in the DMV:

  • Here are two great opportunities to jam with some of the most talented, warm, and welcoming musicians in DC: Gordon Sterling presents The Gypsy Sally's Jam on Feb 27 and Neel Singh's Open Jam and Workshop at Villain & Saint on Feb 28.
  • Wake yourself up with post-pop duo Diet Cig with Great Grandpa and The Spook School at the Rock & Roll Hotel on Feb 28. Diet Cig's intimate connection between musicians Alex Luciano (guitar, vox) and Noah Bowman (drums) will pull you in, along with riffs and straight-up lyrics that make you feel at once young and old.
  • If you're a DC musician or involved in scene or WANT to get involved, head to the DC Musicians Meet-Up on March 1 at Uptown Art House to connect with other music-loving people in our community. Who knows what magic can happen if you show up.
  • At the aforementioned Gordon Sterling jam a few weeks ago, the crowd was wowed by the lyrical prowess of Dior Ashley Brown.  Catch her one-woman show, Dior Ashley Brown presents My Vessel at Atlas Theatre on March 2 where a live band joins her as she dives into women's issues, her experiences with repression, and her successes in the hip hop community that has contributed to her evolution as a female emcee. This is one not to miss.
  • Show your support at the 15th Annual Mammojam Music Festival at Baltimore's 8x10 on March 3, hosted by an all volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to supporting breast cancer awareness, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment programs for uninsured and low income women through live music and artistic performances. This year's line-up includes local bands Spirit Parade, Brooks Long and Mad Dog No Good, and Roses n Rust.
  • In 2010, DC musician Ben Tufts decided he wanted to create an event which would honor his Dad and raise money for the educational fund established in his father's memory. Knowing what a lively and talented music scene there is right in here in the DMV, he looked to his friends for support and thought a concert would be a perfect fundraiser. On March 3 and 4 come see Ben Tufts and Friends pay tribute to The Police at Gypsy Sally's. Dozens of the area's top musicians will gather  to pay homage to the music of The Police and all profits will go to The Craig Tufts Educational Scholarship Fund.

Here are our recommendations for shows throughout the DMV.
