ValenTrey Brings Love and Light to Sixth & I [Audio/Photos]

Phish frontman Trey Anastasio rolled through DC this Valentine’s Day, bringing his solo acoustic tour to Sixth & I Historic Synagogue. On the heels of five shows throughout the Northeast, fans were treated to an intimate live performance laced with storytelling and one-man jams on favorite tunes from the Phish catalog, old and new.

Event Concert Poster (Click for a full size image)

Anastasio opened the evening with a song combination that served as a nod to the city and the setting. First was 'AC/DC Bag' the oldest song played that night, debuted by Phish in 1986. The unique connection between the crowd and Anastasio at these acoustic performances was evident early, when fans instinctively anticipated a call and response after the lyrics, "Sit up and take notice,” gleefully replying with, "tell it like it is." After playing the Gamehendge classic 'The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday,'  Anastasio transitioned, as Phish has so many times since 1987, into 'Avenu Malkenu.' Although he has performed the traditional Jewish prayer 79 times with the band, this was his first performance on an acoustic guitar. After finishing the song, with some requested vocal assistance from the crowd, Anastasio remarked on bassist, Mike Gordon, teaching that song to Phish and the meaning of the Hebrew lyrics, adding that as a Catholic, he “mostly wonders whether or not the body of Christ is gluten-free.”

Later in the set, 'Wolfman’s Brother' gave the first glimpse at the delay-loop jams that characterize the improvisation of these acoustic shows, with Anastasio layering recorded samples of his guitar and playing solos over their repetitions, a technique he’d show off again in new originals like 'Everything’s Right' and 'Blaze On.' The performance of 'Wolfman’s' also led to the storytelling highlight of the night, with Trey telling the crowd how the song reminds him of a time the band got into a heated argument about cavemen during a photo shoot, dressed as cavemen. Trey concluded the hilarious story saying he thought it nearly led to the end of the band.

'Back on the Train' served as the next musical highlight, with outstanding solo work by Anastasio. After the instrumental, 'The Inlaw Josie Wales,' Trey dedicated 'Strange Design' to his wife, Sue, who was in the crowd for the Valentine’s Day show, mentioning that it was written just days before their first daughter was born in 1995. Later, after hearing a request in the crowd and declaring that some songs just wouldn’t work acoustic, Anastasio played 'Sand' and rather than jumping off into another jam, he segued into the acoustic debut of 'The Curtain,' a song that did work extremely well in the acoustic setting. Following some sing along favorites in 'Farmhouse' and 'Bathtub Gin,' Anastasio ended the show with 'Wilson,' and the crowd filled the sanctuary with chants of the Gamehendge villain’s name.

Anastasio's tour continues with two nights in North Carolina, followed by the tour closer in Athens, GA. Fans who seek out the recording of this magical performance at Sixth & I should be sure to check out 'Wolfman’s Brother,' 'Everything’s Right,' 'Back on the Train,' and the outstanding acoustic debut of 'The Curtain.' Also be sure to listen to the story after 'Wolfman’s!'

Tedeschi Trucks Band Begins DC Takeover [Full Audio/Photos/Videos]

Night 1: Friday, February 9

For the seventh consecutive year, Tedeschi Trucks Band (TTB) descended on DC to bring their unique and powerful sound to the Warner Theatre. The 12-piece band, led by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, treated fans to two raucous shows, completing the first leg of four sold-out shows over a span of two weekends in the district. Since 2012, Tedeschi Trucks Band has repeatedly wowed crowds at The Warner and this year seems particularly special.

Friday night started strong with 'Don't Let Me Slide', from the band's 2011 debut, Revelator, followed by a rousing take of 'Laugh About it.' Next was a great rendition of Leonard Cohen's 'Bird On a Wire,' featuring an impressive vocal display from Tedeschi, Mark Rivers (vocals), Mike Mattison (vocals) and Alecia Chakour (vocals). The first set rolled on with the somewhat rare 'Part of Me,' followed by a blistering version of Elmore James' 'The Sky is Crying' in which Susan unleashed a fiery guitar solo to the delight of the crowd. Mattison sang lead vocals on 'Crying Over You', leading into another vocal spotlight for Susan on Bob Dylan's 'Don't Think Twice It's Alright.' The first set ended with an extended rendition of 'Let Me Get By', the title-track off the band's 2016 album. JJ Johnson (drums) and Tyler Greenwell (drums) led the set closer with an extended intro which then featured Kofi Burbridge (keys, flute) on the organ.

After halftime, TTB came out of the gates with an explosive 'Statesboro Blues' (Allman Brothers Band)  in which Trucks emulated the great Duane Allman, putting his slide prowess on display. Next was the popular 'Don't Know What it Means' which featured an enjoyable spastic solo by Kebbi Williams (saxophone).  The crowd was treated to an inspired 'Midnight in Harlem' that included an extended intro by Trucks with hints of 'Little Martha'. The second set featured a relatively new song, 'Shame,'  expected to be on the band's upcoming album. Mattison returned to the front of the stage for a stirring take on Billy Taylor's 'I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel Yo Be Free.'

'Shame' - Recorded by Alex Leary

The band took a short encore break and returned to the stage to close  the night with two covers. First was a tribute to the late Tom Petty, with Tedeschi playing harmonica on 'You Don't Know How it Feels.' The band closed with their take on Joe Cocker's 'Space Captain', with Elizabeth Lea (trombone) exciting the crowd with a powerful outro solo.  The crowd showed appreciation for the 12-piece band, eagerly awaiting the band's performance in less than 24 hours.

Night 2: Saturday, February 10

Tedeschi Trucks Band returned on Saturday night for the second of four performances in DC. The crowd was buzzing in anticipation for two more TTB sets at The Warner Theater. The band opened with the oft-paired duo of 'Anyhow' and 'Do I Look Worried.' First set highlights included a high-energy rendition of Sleepy John Estes' 'Leaving Trunk' featuring Mike Mattison on vocals. The song morphed into Rahsaan Roland Kirk's 'Volunteered Slavery', previously covered by the Derek Trucks Band, before Susan and Derek teamed up and created TTB. An extended performance of 'Idle Wind' closed out the first set, which included a foray into Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's 'Sahib Teri Bandi/Maki Madni' as Derek tested the limit's of his signature Gibson' SG.

The second set featured some choice covers, beginning with Stevie Wonder's 'Love Having You Around,' followed by Neil Young's 'Alabama.' Mike Mattison returned to lead vocals on a blistering 'Get What You Deserve' and the band was firing on all cylinders. Mattison maintained his position at the front of the stage, joined by Tedeschi and Chakour for a heartfelt cover of George Jones' 'Color of the Blues'. The only repeat from Friday's set list was 'Shame', with the band stretching out the center portion of the tune as Trucks teased the Allman Brothers Band's 'Whipping Post' during the outro jam.

Following a take on B.B. King's 'How Blue Can You Get?' the band was primed for an explosive conclusion of Saturday's show. The band echoed the crowd's sentiment and closed the second set with the rocking 'I Want More.' The train was rolling as Trucks laid into some serious guitar riffs, serious enough to snap a string mid-solo. No stranger to this, the guitar guru calmly handed the lead to Burbridge as he restrung his Gibson before seamlessly transitioning into the Santana classic, 'Soul Sacrifice.'

'Bound for Glory' - Recorded by edtyre

The lively crowd welcomed the band back for what would prove to be an unforgettable encore. Burbridge and Trucks began the intro to the traditional 'Will The Circle Be Unbroken,' as Tedeschi prepared to belt some serious vocals to the delight of the crowd. 'Bound For Glory' was next, one of Tedeschi Trucks Band's signature songs since its inception in 2011. This rendition proved to be special, as Tim Lefebvre (bass) dropped into an impromptu groove with Burbridge dancing on top with a marvelous organ solo. The band returned to the main harmony as Trucks unleashed with a fervor that would make many guitarists jealous. The crowd in The Warner became one, clapping along, as Chakour once more put on an incredible vocal display. The excitement was palpable as she implored "Can you feel it?" as the audience was indeed, glory bound. DC will be treated once again this Friday for a third serving of one of the best touring bands in the world. And yes, we all want more.

The Afterparty: The Ron Holloway Band

Ron Holloway's afterparties at The Hamilton have quickly become a staple of Tedeschi Trucks Band's DC runs. The Ron Holloway Band puts on a rocking late night show and you never know who might show up. On Saturday, we saw appearances by Mark Rivers, Ephraim Owens, and Kebbi Williams of TTB. Later in the night, Jenny Langer and Rachel Ann Morgan were joined on vocals by Sunny Trippel and Mary Lankford, making for a powerful quartet of women.

The band sounded especially funky on Saturday night, with Christopher Brown (bass) dropping some bombs to the delight of the energetic crowd. Holloway's tenor saxophone rang clear throughout one of the best music rooms in DC. His sax duel with Williams was especially entertaining, each displaying their unique style on stage. The vocal display was prominent, wowing the crowd with fantastic harmonies throughout the late morning hours in the district.

The band returns to The Hamilton this Friday, February 16, to close out their pair of late night affairs at The Hamilton. Don't miss out on the next show as there could be more familiar faces to grace the stage.

Choose Your Own Adventure Hosts EP Release Party at Gypsy Sally’s with Buddha Cons [Photos/Audio]

Choose Your Own Adventure brought their live composed funk collective to Gypsy Sally's last Wednesday to celebrate the release of their first EP. It was a night marked by sonic waves and chanting melodies drowning in funky mix of ancient and tech heavy drones. This band features different people at nearly every show, but at this show their frontperson, Gina Sobel, was joined by Ryan Lee on guitar, Trevor Pietsch on bass, and Pat Hayes on drums.

The album was recorded live at Minimum Wage Recording in Richmond, VA on December 11, just a handful of days after we caught them at Pearl Street Warehouse. Every track off the album was played this night, but don't go expecting them to sound too similar to their studio counterparts. While some of the structure of the songs may remain familiar, this crew essentially arranges each one on the spot.

They opened with the first track off the EP, 'Netflix and Jam,' an upbeat funk groove. Next they were joined by Stephanie Kaiser for 'Corrina, Corrina.' Zack Cutler joined them next for another off the EP, "QZak," a slow drop beat groove falling into a decomposing epic jam with jazzy drum interludes.

True to form for this crew, the next song was an improvised jam, before dipping back to the album for a couple tracks with 'All Day Long' and 'Good Question', a track that comes at you in rounds of soaring buildups. Ian Dansey joined them for the latter, and stayed on stage as they went into 'Just the Five of Us', a smooth vibe rendition of 'Just the Two of Us' that is as different from the original as it is alike, with a drum solo that turned it dark in the best of ways. Fans of our DC Scene-In-Review podcast will recognize the last track off the album to get played this night, 'Spoiler Alert.'

Vulfpeck's 'Back Pocket' was next, a go-to cover for this group. Jack Irby and Neel Singh joined them for a bit before they original crew closed out the night with 'Sea of Love,' and old, happy jam of theirs.

They were joined by Buddha Cons, providing an appropriately jammy and experimental set to open the night. Check out photos and full show audio below, and make sure to check out CYOA's new EP on bandcamp.

Goodman’s Good Music – Concert Picks of the Week – February 12th

Week Of:  February 12-18, 2018 -

Special Valentine's Day Edition

Summary:

Whoa nelly, what a week coming up! Clone yourself, plan to call in sick at work, have your morning coffee at 8pm, figure out a way to get to all of these shows (especially because the more you go to, the more likely you are to win an awesome DC Music Review t-shirt).

See "All Featured Events" highlighted below for some great jams for the week ahead!

Must See Shows:

The coming week has an amazing and diverse confluence of musicians coming through the area.

In our latest Scene-In-Review interview with Rudi Greenberg, Managing Editor of the Washington Post Express, he aptly indicated that February is "stacked with shows to go to." Here are some of the incredible opportunities to check out :

Hidden Gem Shows:

So many great musicians and shows, these are the super cool ones to impress your date and maybe even yourself:

Where to take your Valentine or your own bad self on February 14:

Got a date? Got yourself? Don't care? Whatever way you flow, here are some additional menu options of tasty morsels for Valentine's Day:

  • Want to impress your date by showing your chops? Check out the Inaugural Open Jam/Workshop hosted by Neel Singh at Villain & Saint with special guest house-band: Skaii. Walk in, sign up, and be paired up with other musicians for an impromptu jam. Or if you and your band (or your sweetie) have something already prepared you want to try workshop on stage, this is the place. Nothing brings people together like taking a risk together.
  • Your Valentine is not your romantic partner? Check out noise pop duo Sleigh Bells with Sunflower Bean at the 9:30 club.  Sleigh Bells guitarist and songwriter Derek Miller met vocalist Alexis Krauss when he was waiting her table at a bistro in Brooklyn. Love takes many forms, one of them being two people who meet and become a creative force to be reckoned with.

Here are our recommendations for shows throughout the DMV.

Hayley Jane and the Primates announced an extensive spring tour from the east coast all the way to Colorado. It includes a stop at the 8x10 in Baltimore on May 3rd, hosted by All Good Presents, which will be their headlining debut at this venue. The last time we saw them there was in April, supporting Pink Talking Fish.

This big tour announcement comes on the heels of other exciting developments for the band and Hayley personally. They put on a rocking opening for Umphrey's McGee at the Fillmore in Philadelphia at the end of January, and Hayley's new project with Ryan Montbleau, Yes Darling, is beginning to pick up steam.

Tickets are on sale now at $10 a piece. This is a band you don't want to miss!

The Last Rewind’s Stunning Gypsy Sally’s Performance w/ Swimmer [Updated with Full Show Audio]

The Last Rewind - DC's Phish Tribute, returned to Gypsy Sally's last Thursday and put on a stunning performance. The Last Rewind is Dave Salvo (Trey), Brian Dodds, (Page), Jason Skeen (Fishman), and Brian Zupruk (Gordo). The night was marked with soaring jams, smooth transitions, and nice 'Oh Kee Pa' during the set closing 'Weekapaug Groove' and again during the encore in 'Slave to the Traffic Light.'

They were supported by Swimmer, a talented group out out of Burlington, Vermont that really impressed the crowd and made for a good fit as support for a Phish tribute. If you're new to Swimmer, as we were, make sure you check out their set and add them to your list of bands to catch when they're in the town.

You can relive the entire night with a livestream recording of The Last Rewind's set and audio of both bands below.

Gina Sobel’s Powerful Performance to Close Her Strathmore Mansion Residence [Photos, Audio]

Gina Sobel closed out her run at the Artist in Residence program at the Strathmore Mansion last week with a powerful performance accompanied by several members of Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA). Fans of the DC Scene-In-Review podcast will recognize this group, and their song "Spoiler Alert" from our last episode.

The show opened with Sobel onstage by herself, performing a new song that has yet to be recorded called "California Zephyr," before Ian Dansey hopped on stage to play pedal steel guitar on "Gotta Go." The rest of the night looked more like a CYOA show than a solo performance with Drew Kid (keys), Kris Monson (bass), and Joey Antico (drums) joined the pair. Most of the set featured original tracks by Sobel, with a couple from CYOA, and only a couple covers. The first was a moving song called "Pretty Heavy" by Lydia Ooghe, who has a sound Sobel described as "elf pop, in the best possible way." Sobel originally recorded this song by herself but later arranged it for the whole band. That was followed Rango II, by Vulfpeck, which Gina was not shy about calling her favorite of the two Rangos.

Next up was a surf-swing version of "Flight Patterns," a song that has been recorded as four distinct versions, all containing different lyrics. That was followed by her unique take on a 14th-century minstrel tune, called "Cock Robin." A particular highlight (embedded above) was a piece commissioned for the Strathmore program called "Gold Sounds." And to close the night, the crew played "World's Getting Loud," the title track off her most recent album.

The Strathmore Artist in Residence, now on their 13th year, seeks to support performers as they transition from amateur to career artists. The mansion provides a beautiful and intimate setting. According to their website, they've "mentored 76 young musicians, ages 16-32, since its inception in 2005. " Each month brings a new talent into the Strathmore Mansion. Be sure to check out their full class of 2018, which includes Drew Kid in March.

You can listen to the entire set below recorded by John Penovich, as well as photos from the night by Josh Brick of Josh Brick Graphics. And you can catch Gina Sobel with the Choose Your Own Adventure crew this Wednesday, February 7th at Gypsy Sally's for a release party for their first EP. They'll be joined by Buddha Cons.
