Musical Alchemy: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Enchants The Anthem in Grateful Resonance

In a spellbinding display of musical alchemy, Joe Russo's Almost Dead (JRAD), the premier Grateful Dead cover band featuring the rhythmic mastery of Joe Russo on drums, the harmonious interplay of guitars by Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger, the booming bass of Dave Dreiwitz, and the keyboard wizardry of Marco Benevento, enraptured The Anthem in Washington, DC, on November 18, 2023 with a magical night of improvisational music inspired by the Grateful Dead.

As the percussive opening notes of "Beat It on Down the Line" echoed through the venue, Joe Russo's drumming provided the rhythmic foundation for the alchemical transformation of sound about to occur. The ethereal grace of "Cats Under the Stars" showcased the harmonious convergence of Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger's guitars, while Marco Benevento's keyboards added a layer of complexity to the sonic potion brewing on stage.

The alchemical process continued with the seamless integration of "Cumberland Blues," underscored by a tantalizing tease of "China Cat Sunflower," demonstrating JRAD's ability to transmute musical elements with finesse. "Truckin'," a perennial crowd-pleaser, unfolded with magnetic energy, a testament to the rhythmic magic Joe Russo applied to each percussive beat.

The contemplative interlude of "Wharf Rat" showcased the band's collective ability to navigate dynamic shifts, with Marco Benevento's keyboard accents contributing to the emotional resonance of the composition. Then Joe Russo led the band in singing "Box Of Rain," another Grateful Dead crowd-pleaser. The set reached its apotheosis with a poignant rendition of Jerry Garcia's "The Wheel," a culmination of the alchemical blend of musical elements that defined the first set.

The second set, inaugurated by the dueling vocals of "Jack Straw," set the tone for a sonic journey transcending temporal and stylistic boundaries. The exploration of Cannon's Jug Stompers' "Viola Lee Blues" revealed the alchemical collaboration between Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger's guitars, Marco Benevento's keyboards, and Dave Dreiwitz's bass.

"Help on the Way" and "Slipknot!" unfolded with cinematic grandeur, with Joe Russo's percussive prowess propelling the compositions forward. The zenith of the evening manifested with the incendiary performance of "Shakedown Street" and an all-time-great "Throwing Stones"—a veritable musical explosion where Scott Metzger and Tom Hamilton's psychedelic guitar interplay reached new heights, and Marco Benevento's keyboard solos further elevated the jams' transformative complexity.

For the encore, Joe Russo's Almost Dead cast a final enchantment with "They Love Each Other," highlighting the emotive resonance of Tom Hamilton and Joe Russo's harmonized vocals. Concluding the evening with Bob Weir's "One More Saturday Night," JRAD, under the influence of Joe Russo's rhythmic alchemy, left an indelible imprint on the collective consciousness of those fortunate enough to be present.

Peter McPoland performs at The 9:30 Club

Peter McPoland Brings Raw Passion And Energy To The 9:30 Club

The indie-rock TikTok icon Peter McPoland took the stage by storm at the 9:30 Club on Friday. With his life-size pig and four-piece band, McPoland had fans dancing and screaming his lyrics right back at him.

Before I dive too far into the evening, I just want to express my gratitude to Peter McPoland for doing what he does. To me, McPoland exemplifies the beauty and versatility that is music, and music is food for the soul.

Tears instantly streamed down my face the moment I heard the beginning chords of “String Lights” from his first album Slow Down. I have a lot of emotions attached to that song.

My grandfather passed away just over a year ago, and “String Lights” was the very first song that I listened to after I had heard the news. The song took on a different meaning, and now I always think of that moment when I hear it. But getting to hear it live and see McPoland perform it with such passion was therapeutic. That’s what good music does—it allows you to unapologetically feel raw emotions. This was truly one of the most emotionally fulfilling concerts I’ve ever seen.

Peter McPoland

With the support of opener Stephen Dawes, McPoland has been on his North American tour since the middle of October, with his third-to-last stop in Washington, D.C. This show on his Piggy album tour was an hour and a half of pure passion. He has been described by many as an “indie rock” artist, but he is an incredibly versatile artist with a repertoire that ranges from melodic, heartfelt ballads to high energy headbangers.

Peter McPoland

McPoland set the tone for the rest of the show by opening with “Mold,” the first song on his new album Piggy. The song was like a constant stream of energy that coursed through the audiences’ bodies and ignited them for the entirety of the show.

Peter McPoland connecting with his adoring audience

McPoland gained fame by posting videos of his music on TikTok, releasing his first single, “Lady Bird,” in 2018. With his first album, Slow Down, released in 2022 and now 2023’s Piggy, McPoland has made a name for himself, especially among the Gen Z demographic. His music appeals to a wide variety of audiences due to its versatility and relatability. Most of the tour’s set list consisted of songs from Piggy, but he also sang some of his “hits” from Slow Down as well as his singles like “Shit Show”—a very self-aware song for a live concert—and “Romeo & Juliet”—the song that launched his career.

Peter McPoland and his broken foot

McPoland spent a good portion of his tour jumping into the crowd and moshing with his fans during his song “Turn Off The Noise,” but he broke his foot at his show at the House of Blues in Chicago and has been in a boot since then. Therefore, when he sang this song, Stephen Dawes came back onstage to sing the beginning of the song and mosh with the crowd in place of McPoland while he hopped around onstage on his good foot.

Thanks to his TikTok videos of his tour highlights and behind the scenes, fans knew that he had broken his foot, but many were surprised when Dawes came back out to mosh with them. Despite McPoland’s injury, he still danced a lot onstage, inspiring the crowd to do the same.

Peter McPoland and his broken foot

Peter McPoland and his broken foot

“Turn Off The Noise” was McPoland’s favorite song to perform, as stated in a TikTok video, but now it’s “Dog,” which is a heart-wrenching song about an abusive and controlling relationship. When talking about difficult topics such as this, Gen Z often copes with humor. McPoland would occasionally bark, causing the fans to bark back. There is no shortage of animal references on this tour.

Peter McPoland with some gifts from the crowd

A few adoring fans tossed some gifts onstage for him, including a few stuffed pigs, a poster with his lyrics “I need you, I miss you, I love you” from his song “I Need You,” and a bald cap, which he proceeded to put on his head before singing his next song.

McPoland connected with his fans at the 9:30 Club on Friday night. He frequently asked the crowd if they were “doing good” and wanted to make sure everyone was having fun. Towards the end of the show, he said, “We have a few songs left; it’s up to you to make this the best f***ing night of your life.”

Peter McPoland with some gifts from the crowd

Peter McPoland with some gifts from the crowd

The first ever show that McPoland played with his current four-piece band was in Washington, D.C., so he said it was really special for them to be back. McPoland also played his red electric guitar for a few songs. At one point while he was playing the guitar, his microphone stand fell over. Rather than picking it up, he laid on the ground with his guitar to finish singing the song.

He also told a few anecdotes about some of his songs. Before he sang “Saint Peter,” which McPoland said on Twitter was not on the album for personal reasons, he described an experience he had while working at Domino's Pizza that inspired the song. He left the faucet on in the kitchen while he was out delivering a pizza, so when he came back the kitchen was covered in water. The seemingly silly story contrasted with the melancholy song about feeling incompetent.

Peter McPoland

Piggy is much more rock-oriented than his first album or even most of his singles, and it is even reminiscent of 1980s alternative or synth rock bands such as Depeche Mode. The setting matched the vibe of the album too, with a stage fit with a black curtain and multicolored bright lights. With its catchy, repetitive themes and quick-paced drum beats in each song, the album is like a shock to the nervous system that excites the senses and makes the listener feel so many emotions all at once.

Peter McPoland
Peter McPoland loves his audience and we love him right back!

Overall, Piggy is a coming-of-age album that explores the angst and emotions of growing up in the digital age. Given that McPoland gained his following on TikTok, it is like an introspective look into his brain. His first single off the album, “Digital Silence,” which was released four months prior to the album, set that tone and became Piggy’s anthem. The song is about wanting to get everyone to love you and learning to accept that the world is not as perfect as you may have imagined it. Fans sang the words back to him throughout the concert, but they were especially loud during this one.

McPoland knows how to put on an entertaining show. He lit up the stage, danced around, sang his heart out, and shared his art across the country. Anyone in the audience could tell just how much his music means to his fans–not just to me. McPoland is really something special for this generation of music listeners.

Mipso Is Coming To The 9:30 Club on November 17th

Mipso is coming to the 9:30 Club on November 17th a late night performance of magical Americana music. For those that have not heard Mipso before, their  music is a beautiful combination of traditional string based music with close harmony and a variety of modern influences.

The band formed in 2012 as an excuse to play music between classes in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Joseph Terrell came from a family of banjo-playing uncles and a guitarist grandma, and he’d gotten curious again about the string band music he’d heard as a kid. Jacob Sharp was raised on equal parts Doc Watson and Avett Brothers in the mountains of North Carolina and he was hunting for a chance to sing some harmonies. Wood Robinson added a Charlie Haden-esque interest in bridging jazz and grass sensibilities on the double bass, and Libby Rodenbough soon joined on fiddle, unsatisfied by her classical violin training but drawn like a moth toward the glow of old, weird Americana.

Mipso - Book Of Fools

Post-pandemic Mipso is starting fresh again with their sixth album, Book of Fools, which was released on August 25th, 2023.  The songs might be their best yet: “Carolina Rolling By” shows Terrell at his most relaxed and confident while the band turns a story of a pill-popping truck driver into a meditative cosmic country-tinged head bopper. “The Numbers” flirts with 60s surf rock while Rodenbough winks and wags a finger at our market-obsessed culture, and “Broken Heart/Open Heart” features Sharp at his most heart-wrenching and earnest. Other standouts “East” and “Radio Hell” will infect you with earworms made of guitar riffs, Robinson’s pretzel-twisted upright bass lines, and saturated “ooohs” drifting in as if on AM radio waves.

Mipso - Book Of Fools

Rock, country, indie-Americana: genre descriptors and labels may be applied to Mispo's latest album but they miss the point, which is that these four people and only these four people could’ve made this album. Only a decade in the van could’ve made this album.

Mipso is supported by Palmyra, hailing from from the nearby Shenandoah Valley.   We are looking forward to seeing this band perform well into the night in DC on Friday, November 17th with their beatufiul harmonies and modern take on Americana music.

Laufey performs at The Lincoln Theatre on November 4, 2023

Laufey Lights Up The Lincoln Theatre

From the moment Laufey walked onstage at the Lincoln Theatre for a sold-out Saturday night performance, the audience knew that they were in for a magical evening.

The 24-year-old Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter who gained fame via sharing her music on TikTok has blossomed over the past few years and has attracted a loyal following. She is on a mission to revitalize jazz singing and bring it to younger audiences. Her six-month American and European tour featuring her newest album, Bewitched, is sold out.

Adam Melchor

Adam Melchor

Laufey was accompanied by 27-year-old singer-songwriter Adam Melchor. The New Jersey native opened the show with a simple and honest setup: just him and his guitar with blue lights behind him.  “It's been really nice to play just like my acoustic guitar because usually I have a band,” Melchor said in an impromptu post-show interview. “So, it's been really nice to go back to my roots in that way.”

Like Laufey, Melchor is a storyteller with his music. However, Melchor likes to tell the audience about the funny, heartwarming, or heart-wrenching stories that inspired his songs before he croons his emotional ballads that made the audience feel like a part of his story. He writes very literal lyrics that reflect his life experiences and personal interactions.  After seeing Melchor perform and command the stage, he is certainly a hidden artistic gem. Although Melchor may not be widely known, he is an artist to keep a keen eye on.

Adam Melchor

Adam Melchor

Laufey

When it was time for Laufey to come onstage, members of the audience–many of whom were dressed in blazers, dresses, and bows to channel Laufey’s style–cheered loudly.

Laufey may seem shy on the outside, but with her impressive range, she flourishes when she lets out her buttery, honey-like jazz vocals. She performs with such ease and poise. She let the Lincoln Theatre come alive in a theatrical set, fit with a wall of twinkling lights and warm glowing lamps behind her. She was accompanied onstage by a band, a string quartet, and Melchor singing background vocals on a few songs, as well as numerous instruments she played throughout the show.

Laufey

Laufey

As far as D.C. music venues go, the Lincoln Theatre is the only one deserving of housing such a graceful old soul such as Laufey. It has an atmosphere of warmth and sophistication, as if the concert is taking place in a classical art museum. It matches her style of music and her personality perfectly.

Laufey performing on her beloved cello

Laufey has been known to put cello into her songs, so when she sat down to play her cello, fans cheered once again. She also spent a few songs over at the grand piano in the center of the stage. Though she was “scared of her piano teacher” growing up, she now challenges herself by composing wordless pieces of music and breaking the rules she was taught.

Laufey created a strong connection to her audience. She even turned the audience into singers, teaching them a two-part harmony to sing with her during her song “Lovesick.”

Laufey performing on her beloved cello

Through her use of social media, she has become very relatable to Gen Z and talks about things that can be hard to touch upon but are made easier when they start conversations about it. For example, when describing the story behind her inspiration for “Lovesick,” she said, “I had a feeling things were going to go terribly wrong. It’s called anxiety.” That made the audience laugh.

Laufey

Her second to last song, “Letter To My 13 Year Old Self,” struck a chord with many members of the audience. The crowd was silent, absorbing every word. The only time they broke their silence was when Laufey sang the line, “One day, you'll bе up on stage / Little girls will scream your namе,” and the audience shouted “LAUFEY!” After that song, Laufey stood with her guitar and looked out into the crowd, taking everything in, before moving on.

Laufey

The artist grew up splitting her time between Iceland and Washington, D.C. In fact, she wrote a lot of her first songs here, and she released her very first song from her bedroom in D.C. To show her appreciation for this city, she changed the ending lyrics to her new song “From the Start” to say “D.C., I loved you from the start.”

Laufey performs at The Hamilton

She also concludes each of her concerts with a surprise song so that every city she plays for has a unique experience. For her set at the Lincoln, she saved one of her most emotional songs for last as she concluded with “Nightlight,” her song about packing up her childhood bedroom. A lot of the inspiration for her songwriting comes from real life experiences that are unique to her but can be relatable to anyone, for they are natural human experiences.

Laufey performs at The Hamilton

Laufey is on a mission to bring back jazz, and from the looks of it, she is definitely succeeding.

We wish Laufey and Adam Melchor wild success on the rest of their sold out tour and look forward to seeing each of them back in DC in the future where we will once again be enraptured by their music, hanging on every word of their stories and annecdotes, and the emotional journey their music takes us on.

Kendall Street Company Is Coming To The Atlantis on December 22nd

Kendall Street Company is no stranger to having a wild time. If you recently attended the 2023 Ramble Festival, you would have witnessed two incredible performances including their all-star stage-packing late-night performance alongside Sneezy as they created an all-night party as part of a band-blending Sneezy Street.  Be prepared for an unforgettable night of music on December 22nd when The Company comes to The Atlantis, in Washington, DC.

Elevating Us All – The Ramble Festival 2023 Proves To Be The Most Spectacular Independent Music Festival In The DMV
On Friday, October 6th, 2023, the gates for The Ramble Festival opened in Darlington, MD.  From the moment guests arrived[...]

The genre-fluid, eclectic rock ensemble has drawn varied comparisons to the dynamic jams of Umphrey's McGee and Widespread Panic, the songwriting of John Prine, the experimental psychedelia of Pink Floyd, the progressive jazz-infused rock of Frank Zappa, and the off-color humor of Ween and They Might Be Giants.

Kendall Street Company performs at the 2023 Ramble Festival

In addition to their reputation as must-see live performers, The Company's prolific immunity to writer's block has led them to release over 100 original songs between seven studio albums, two live albums, and four EPs in a period of just six years. 2023 will see the release of (at least) an additional two studio records, a handful of singles, and who knows what else! Their live shows often include unreleased and improvised tracks, as well as covers ranging from the Grateful Dead to DEVO to Alanis Morisette to Soulja Boy. With a full in-ear monitor and multitrack recording rig built, the band continues to capture the moments that mean the most to fans.

Kendall Street Company performs at the 2023 Ramble Festival

This quintet has rapidly become a must-see live act and also the pride of the DMV jam-band community, having met in Charlottesville, Virginia, while attending the University of Virginia. The band draws their name from late-night bonfires at the Kendall Street Beach on the Chesapeake Bay and the good company who fueled the flames, the jams, and the conversation that was had during these early performances.  Kendall Street Company is Louis Smith (Rhythm Guitar/Lead Vox), Brian Roy (Bass), Ryan Wood (Drums), Ben Laderberg (Lead Guitar), and Jake Vanaman (Saxophone/Keys). For such a young band, their accomplishments are commendable. They have performed at festivals including Lockn', Summer Camp, High Sierra, Resonance, Floydfest, Some Kind of Jam, Rooster Walk, and Ramble Festival. The Company has also shared the stage with Goose, Umphrey's McGee, Papadosio, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Leftover Salmon, The Infamous Stringdusters, Big Something, and Melvin Seals & JGB.

One of our favorite Kendall Street Company ear-worms - "Cars".

Kendall Street Company will be touring supporting their latest album Separation95.  Before Kendall Street Company hits the stage, Frederick, Maryland's very own funktastic band, Litz will start the night off with their fierce funktronica dance party.  Have you never heard of funktronica before? Get ready to witness where electronica meets funk!

Kendall Street Company wsg/LITZ perform at The Atlantis in Washington DC on December 22, 2023

We are looking forward to seeing the bands performance.  Each Kendall Street Company concert is a unique experience and always included elements of crowd participation, off-the-cuff comedic bits, haphazard choreography, musical improvisation, and surprise musical guests.   We hope you join us at the ever intimate 450-person Atlantis in Washington, DC, for the last performance of 2023 inside DC's latest music venue.

Slow Pulp Performs at Union Stage
Concert Reviews

Slow Pulp Embraces DC in a Warm Hug During Yard Tour

On Halloween Eve, the lights dimmed low at Union Stage. Under the darkness, the Mystery Gang’s five members quietly crept on stage. Once beaming high, the rising fluorescent lights revealed a new ensemble - indie rock band Slow Pulp making their DC debut.

Approaching the mid-tour point, the crew geared up for another dazzling night of raw passion and emotion. Following the release of their newest album Yard, the band began scouring the US before their global apperance. Since its release, Slow Pulp has skyrocketed to indie stardom- molding headlines, accumulating millions of streams, and luring over 1.5 million listeners on Spotify.

Emily Massey

The sold-out show unfolded with the sweet, soft sounds of Babehoven, or should I say “Luigi”, since every member wore the same costume. The dynamic duo, Maya Bon and Ryan Albert opened their set with Break The Ice, a soul-fluttering and ear warming track. The two roused the stage during their 30-minute set, playing I’m On Your Team, Fugazi, and Chariot.

A few minutes past 9, Slow Pulp finally graced the stage, prompting a massive rupture of applause. The original crew- lead singer Emily Massey (Daphne), bassist Alexander Leeds (Velma), drummer Teddy Matthews (Fred), and guitarist Teddy Stoehr (Shaggy) were joined by old friend Javier Reyes who sealed the group costume as Scooby Doo.

Opening with arguably the hottest track off of Yard- Slugs, the crowd immediately sprang into song. The lights flickered from bright jovial purples to deep subdued blues, resembling the contrasting atmosphere the band brings to the table. Leaning on a genial note, they performed Doubt, New Media, and Idaho. Past gooers and newcomers all huddled together, swaying and bobbing their heads insync to the honeyed tones.

Teddy Stoehr
Emily Massey

Just like Yard, Slow Pulp seamlessly wove between eccentric melodies to somber, hushed tracks. “We’re going to take it way down now,” said Massey. “It’s quiet hours.” Within almost the same breath, the low hums of New Horse unwound. The same solemn aura neighbored Fishes and Steel Birds.

After a moment of silence, Massey gripped the mic once more. “Anyone on their period for Halloween?” She laughed. “Okay, enough of my horrible jokes. This one’s called cramps.” The audience burst into ecstatic roars.

Emily Massey

“What do we want?” Asked Massey mid-song. The crowd cupped their mouths and screamed: “EVERYTHING!”

Emily Massey

The band’s skillful teeter between dreamy rock and gentle indie is far from their only talent. Their singles also incorporate a wide array of distinct instuments. One, being the soothing shaker, making its live appearance during Falling Apart. And two- the harmonica which prompted an outcry of cheer during the country sprinkled folk song, Broadview.

After the final note of Home, Slow Pulp waved goodbye and vacated the stage. But the show was far from over. To fans delight, the gang marched right back for three last songs. First was title track Yard, which fans screetched for all night. Next, was High with mesmerizing vocals, an enthralling beat onset, and riveting guitar strums. Finally, wrapping the night was Montanna, the perfect fade-away farewell.

Emily Massey

Considering Slow Pulp’s current traction, there is no doubt this indie band will continue paving their way to larger venues. Their sensational sound, charming stage presence, and entrancing art makes provides a new perspective for the eyes and ears of fans. Though Yard released recently, listeners across the globe will certainly be itching for more.

Greensky Bluegrass perform at The Anthem in 2022

The two-night run at The Anthem has become an annual tradition on The Wharf as this group has performed there every year since 2018 - pandemic years withstanding. The Washington Metro Area has hosted Greensky Bluegrass countless times since they formed more than twenty years ago, including performances at the 8x10, 9:30 Club, The Hamilton, Pier Six Pavilion, Wolf Trap, Hot August, and the opening of The Chrysalis, to name just a few.

In 2018, Greenksy Bluegrass decided to put their tent stakes down at The Anthem and hoist up rigging for the grandest of indoor jamboree tents that would play host to 6,500 campers. These campers, under the tutelage of camp directors Dave Bruzza (guitar), Paul Hoffman (mandolin), Michael Bont (banjo), Anders Beck (dobro), and Mike Devol (bass), would spend nights singing along to spectacular camp tunes and reveling in the energy that is a Greensky Bluegrass concert. Nights at The Anthem are made ever more spectacular by their Lighting Director, Andrew Lincoln.  Witnessing Greensky Bluegrass at the largest indoor venue has its advantages, as Lincoln has the largest room in the country to light up with his world-class mastery of lighting systems. Come for the music of Greensky Bluegrass, and stay for the bedazzling and face-melting light show put on by Lincoln.

The crowd was excited, knowing they were about to witness something special on the final stop of the US leg of the tour. The air was thick with anticipation, and as the lights dimmed, the stage was set for a trip back to the era when rock and roll ruled the radio.

The band kicked things off with the thunderous "Black Shuck," and from the first power chord, it was evident that The Darkness had lost none of their electrifying energy. Justin Hawkins, the frontman with an unmistakable and powerful falsetto, strutted across the stage in a black and white leather jumpsuit, engaging the audience with his captivating charisma. He interacted with the fans throughout the night, rubbing a bald man's head in the front row, and later, he took another fan's shirt and wore it for a song after a friendly tease for him wearing bootleg merchandise. Justin and his bandmates, Dan Hawkins (guitar), Frankie Poullain (bass), and Rufus Tiger Taylor (drums), channeled a more flamboyant and theatrical period of rock and roll, wearing sparkling skin-tight outfits, playing behind-the-head guitar solos, and doing handstands on the stage risers.

The night continued with "Get Your Hands Off My Woman”, its raw and powerful guitar riffs that had the crowd headbanging in unison. Justin then announced that the Darkness would perform the entire "Permission to Land" album, and the energy in the room was palpable as fans anticipated which song would come next. "Growing On Me" had the crowd singing along to every word, while "The Best Of Me" showcased the band's tight musical prowess. Each track was a reminder of the album's timeless appeal and its impact on the rock music scene.

"Givin' Up" and "Love Is Only A Feeling" showcased the band's ability to shift effortlessly between hard-hitting rock anthems and emotional ballads. The haunting "Curse Of The Tollund Man" took the audience on a journey through a more mystical side of The Darkness, and "Stuck In A Rut" had everyone dancing and clapping.

"How Dare You Call This Love?" and the brilliant "Street Spirit / Holding My Own" provided moments of introspection and thunderous guitar riffs, with Justin's vocals resonating in the hearts of everyone in the venue. As they approached the end of the "Permission to Land" album, "Friday Night" and "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" brought the crowd to a frenzy, with fans singing their hearts out to the band's biggest hit. But The Darkness wasn't done yet. They returned for an encore that featured the raucous "I Love You 5 Times" and closed the night with "Love On the Rocks With No Ice."

The Darkness proved that their music, like fine wine, has aged exceptionally well, and their performance was a testament to the enduring power of "Permission to Land." The Darkness reaffirmed their status as rock legends with their boundless energy, unapologetic charisma, and exceptional musicianship. This performance was more than just a concert; it was a celebration of rock history.

Salaam Remi’s Musezeum Pop-Up Lands in DC

For the first three weeks of October, acclaimed music phenomenon Salaam Remi held his MuseZeum art pop-up in the nation’s capital. Hosted at Legacy DC, a dispensary, gallery, and street art shop, each hip-hop-centric piece proudly illuminate the genre’s 50th anniversary. Elevating staples like Marvin Gaye, Slick Rick, and more, each cross blend of music, art and technology highlights prominent music pioneers with authentic artistry.

Salaam Remi’s Musezeum Pop-Up

From producer to art curator, Salaam Remi has a long winded history of fostering the craft of billboard-charting artists. Working with critically acclaimed musicians such as Nas, Amy Winehouse, and Jazmine Sullivan, Remi has mastered the industry’s inner workings and become a dominate force in the scene. Now, Remi is furthering his reach by mixing visual mediums with his known audio presence.

The fruition for each exhibit first came to life with Remi’s admiration for Slick Rick and other hip-hop trailblazers. On every art piece, Remi holds the title of canvas artist, even photographing one design featuring Nas.

Immediately upon entrance, a MuseZeum team member greets you with a personal tour of each art instillation.  Paired with each visual component is an audio element, with speakers and bluetooth installed into each artwork. During the tour, a song by every artist is played at their respective canvas. Each speaker is discretely disguised into a sound system matching the artist’s style.

It sounds like your average modern art gallery, yet it is far from it. The curation of the exhibition is a collected effort by photographers, audio designers, painters, woodworkers, and more, who helped showcase of over 10 intricate canvases. Glazed in glittering reflective frames, every piece features an artistic twist of the music’s equivalent emotion.

Accompanying the art is merchandise, featuring a wide array of sweatshirts. From artist faces to art prints, attendees can bring home a piece of the pop up with them. According to MuseZeum’s team, 40% of the profits from each sold item is donated to the artist involved. That means you, the artist, and Museum’s team all benefit from the market.

Though rooted in Miami, Florida, Remi’s MuseZeum has traveled up the east coast, making its first appearance at Legacy New York. Imprinting on DC’s art and music scene, attendees gain a taste of authentic hip-hop culture from an original architect in the game. It may have been MuseZeum’s first appearance in DC but it will hopefully not be its last. Stay tuned to see when the gallery will be back in the district.

LaMP Fall Tour 2023
Concert News

LaMP (Russ Lawton, Scott Metzger, Ray Paczkowski) – A Modern Day Supergroup Is Coming To The Atlantis on December 6th

LaMP, featuring Russ Lawton, Scott Metzger, and Ray Paczkowski will play twelve shows across the Northeast this Fall. Luckily for us, the trio stops at The Atlantis in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, December 6th, for a headline performance.   This performance is your opportunity to see these extraordinary musicians perform up close in an intimate 450-person venue.

LaMP formed on a magical night at Nectar's in Burlington, VT, circa December 2018, when drummer Russ Lawton and Hammond B-3 organist Ray Paczkowski, whose duo Soule Monde are longtime stalwarts of the Burlington, Vermont music scene and nationally recognized as the rhythm section for the Trey Anastasio Band (TAB) were joined by guitarist Scott Metzger, an in-demand session guitarist and one-fifth of celebrated Grateful Dead revivalists Joe Russo's Almost Dead (JRAD).

The chemistry between the three was immediate, resulting in a heavy groove, soul jazz, throwdown with dollops of deep-fried funk and technical prowess to spare. A series of starts and stops were to follow as its three members navigated their individual schedules. In 2023, they have doubled down and committed to this band in 2023, which has resulted in LaMP's busiest year yet.

LaMP's performance will be supported by none other than the Frederick's very own  funktastic keyboardist Natalie Brooke and her band.

We hope to see you at The Atlantis on December 6th - one of only twelve performances of their Fall 2023 tour, and given the size of The Atlantis this performance like most performance at The Atlantis will sell out very quickly.
