Ready Set Go – Grace Potter Prepares To Rock The Anthem On January 27th

Rock-and-roll soul queen Grace Potter is set to perform at The Anthem on Saturday, January 27th.

Grace Potter - Mother Road

Mother Road (Released August 18, 2023)

This month, Potter kicks off her latest tour supporting her latest album - Mother Road. This brilliant album is the follow-up to the Grammy-nominated album Daylight. Mother Road marks the start of a thrilling new era of a career that has included seven acclaimed albums, sharing the stage with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Robert Plant, Bob Wier, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and the Allman Brothers Band, and has played nearly every major music festival in America including the DMV's beloved Floyd Festival. This album consists of ten larger-than-life tracks and fuses elements of soul, blues, country, and timeless rock-and-roll with masterful abandon.

Describing the experience of creating this album, Potter said, "I didn't have any real intention of making a record; I just thought I'd get into a room with some friends and mess around with these unfinished ideas I'd been gathering," she says. "But then an entire album fell out of me, including all the lyrics—the blanks had been filled in, like my subconscious had created finished sentences spoken distinctly from the perspective of all these characters that were living inside me."

Give this album a listen if you have not already because there are a few hip-shaking instant classics in there that we look forward to seeing performed live at The Anthem and across the country.

Baltimore native Brittney Spencer will support Grace Potter's Anthem performance and is supporting her latest album My Stupid Life which will be released on January 19th, 2024..

Be prepared to buckle up for a rock-and-roll journey with Potter, her stunning voice, dynamic stage presence, behind the piano and of course her iconic Flying V guitar.

“Greensky Weekend” At The Anthem Draws Closer As Supporting Artists Have Been Revealed

In October 2017, The Anthem in Washington, DC, opened its doors, and a few short months later, in March of 2018, Greenksy Bluegrass first put down their tent stakes down to host their first of many "Camp Greensky" Weekends in DC. The two-night run at The Anthem has become an annual tradition on The Wharf as this group has performed there every year since 2018 - pandemic years withstanding.

Greensky Bluegrass performs at The Anthem in 2023

For those unfamiliar with Greensky Bluegrass, they are a quintet based out of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and consist of Dave Bruzza (guitar), Paul Hoffman (mandolin), Michael Bont (banjo), Anders Beck (dobro), and Mike Devol (bass). At nearly every Anthem performance, Paul Hoffman and Anders Beck recall early childhood memories of what it would be like for them to be a music superstar, and they always mention how The Anthem is what they always thought their dreams would look like.

Just as George Martin was considered the fifth Beatle, lighting director Andrew Lincoln can be considered the sixth band member who provides the most distinctive and recognizable backdrops for the band's fiery performance since 2011. With the band's love of The Anthem and an enormous canvas for Lincoln to light up, these two performances always showcase the full prowess and power of this progressive bluegrass powerhouse.

Greensky Bluegrass performs at The Anthem

In one month, on February 9th, the biggest indoor Greenksy Bluegrass concert event of the year will commence at The Anthem. These performances mark the tenth and eleventh performances at this iconic venue. Their Anthem performances are known not only for memorable Greensky performances but also for the spectacular musicians they invite to join them for the weekend. We have seen breathtaking performances by Billy Strings, Ghost Note, Cris Jacobs, The Infamous Stringdusters, Railroad Earth, and Daniel Donato.

Last week, Greensky Bluegrass announced this tour's supporting acts, and we could not be more excited - Molly Tuttle will perform on February 9th, and Melt will perform on February 10th.

Greensky Bluegrass Winter Tour 2024 Supporting Acts

Molly Tuttle will perform without her Golden Highway ensemble at The Anthem. We have witnessed this bluegrass superstar perform alone at the Appaloosa Festival in 2022 where she fully demonstrated how she can command and mesmerize a large audience with only herself and her acoustic guitar.

We are also excited to see New York City-based indie soul band Melt perform at The Anthem. They formed in 2017, drawing their sound from soul, psychedelia, existential pop songs, and ethereal jam sections, and have been gaining traction nationwide. Twenty-twenty-three saw them perform at Hulaween, Levitate, and just recently at the 9:30 Club.

Twenty-twenty-four is set to be another explosive and memorable weekend of music at Camp Greensky at The Anthem.  We hope to see you Greensky Weekend at The Wharf  and the momentous musical moments that await us all.

Tickets are available now including both single and multi-night packages.

Sicard Hollow Set To Perform At Pearl Street Warehouse On January 18th

Nashville’s psychedelic punk-grass rockers, Sicard Hollow, is a four-piece progressive bluegrass band blowing away audiences coast to coast with their newgrass music. This band is proving to be one of the most exciting new bluegrass artists in the music scene today and is heading to Pearl Street Warehouse on Thursday, January 18th, 2024.

Sicard Hollow puts a younger and energetic style to newgrass bluegrass music.  Before the band met in 2018, none of the members considered playing bluegrass.  Matt Rennick (violin) was working on electronic music, Will Herrin (mandolin/vocals) was playing guitar in rock bands, and Alex King (guitar/vocals) was barely playing music at all. After a few jam sessions, the newgrass bluegrass flowed through their veins and out of their amplifiers. Then, in the Fall of 2019 they added Parrish Gabriel (bass), and the rest, you may say, is history.

Twenty twenty-three was a breakout year for Sicard Hollow, having performed at the Elevation Music Festival, Camp Deep End, Northlands Music & Arts Festival, Camp Navarro, 4848 Festival, and DelFest. They first caught our attention when they opened up for Kitchen Dwellers at The Hamilton Live in April and blew us away with two incredibly powerful performances at DelFest in May.

We are excited to see this band perform again as they headline Pearl Street Warehouse. Seeing is believing - and we believe you will be as impressed with this band as we are.

Kendall Street Company performs at The Atlantis on December 22, 2023
Concert Reviews

Kendall Street Company Rocks The Atlantis

December 22nd was a spectacular night for music in Washington, DC, as The Atlantis hosted Kendall Street Company, supported by Litz. The U Street Corridor was unusually quiet due to a Christmas exodus - all except the musical energy radiating from The Atlantis as these two powerhouse DMV bands debuted at DC's newest venue.

Litz

Litz, hailing from Frederick, Maryland, took to the triangular stage just a few minutes shy of 8 PM, wanting to maximize every minute of their funktronica set this evening. Starting with a blank canvas, Litz started with some good old-fashioned rock and roll music before segueing into the sax-forward funk music they are known for. What started as a simmering pot of musical energy began to boil over as the band continued to crank up the energy in the room. With Logan Litz's echoing bass, Austin Litz's sax roaring, Nick Thrasher's thunderous drumming, Logan Litz's booming bass, and Dan Gallerman's soaring guitar solos, the venue quickly filled with waves of energy coming off the crowd as they vibed collectively with the band. After waves of solos by Gallerman and extended talkbox moments by Austin Litz, the band left the stage at 9 PM to a roaring ovation and appreciation for a full hour of music. If you have yet to see Litz perform live, we highly recommend seeing this funktronica stalwart.

Litz

Headlining the evening was Charlottesville's very own Kendall Street Company. The Company is Louis Smith (Rhythm Guitar/Lead Vox), Brian Roy (Bass), Ryan Wood (Drums), Ben Laderberg (Lead Guitar), and Jake Vanaman (Saxophone/Keys), and this genre-fluid, eclectic rock ensemble is well-known for crowd participation, off-the-cuff comedic bits, and incredible jams. In the ten years since the band formed, the band has performed at hundreds of venues across the country and has simultaneously delighted thousands of fans with appearances at festivals including The Ramble Festival, 4848 Festival, Peach Festival,  Floydfest, and Hulaween, to name a few.

Louis Smith talking to the audience

Tonight's performance would bookend their 2023 DC appearances, having performed next door at the 9:30 Club in January. This Atlantis appearance would provide an intimate backdrop for the band to perform in front of 450 fans. This evening, the band came to The Atlantis with a clear mission: bring another raucous and unique performance and continue winning over and delighting new fans.

As the band took to the stage, they waved to many audience members, including many longtime fans, friends, and family members. Despite this being a DC performance, it felt like half of Richmond and Charlottesville made the trek up to DC for this performance.

Jake Vanaman

The band would open up with "Stephen The Manly Clam" before kicking off the evening's shenanigans. The Company shifted gears by playing a fan favorite and hip-shaking song, "Expiration Date," as Jake Vanaman's distinctive saxophone riff echoed in the venue. They were barely six minutes into their performance before Louis Smith started improvising and led fans into an "Atlantis Is Real" chant. This moment would be remembered as the performance's jumping-off point for festive fan interactions and extended jams that continued well into the evening.

Louis Smith talking to the audience

The night's biggest surprise occurred after "Checkin Out" when Louis Smith told the audience that this was a new song that would be released in March 2024 and added, "Twenty-twenty-four is going to be a big year for us. We are going to release a new single every month [...]. On every final Friday of the month, look out for a new single from Kendall Street Company." Like many a Kendall Street Company fan, we genuinely look forward to listening to these new songs in 2024.

The band would continue their magnificent performance with a jam-filled version of "Telephone," only to be surpassed as the audience erupted with excitement as Vanaman's saxophone pierced the venue with the opening notes of "Marty Song." Afterward, the band delved into a hilarious version of "Gloria" by Them as Smith enjoyed playful and entertaining banter with bassist Brian Roy. They entertained the audience with stories of Christmas ornaments to place on their tree intertwined inside this timeless classic. Continuing their newfound Christmas theme, the band performed a 1973 deep-track "Truckin' Trees for Christmas" by Red Simpson.

The band would then delve into a monster, "Sidetracked," which came in just over 17 minutes. Midway through, the band threw in a humorous homage to the late James Brown by having Louis Smith direct drummer Ryan Wood as they counted off somewhat random, if not odd, number drum counts like 17 and 11 until they resumed their all-out funky dance party. This masterpiece showed the band's brilliance and why they should be headlining larger clubs. This seventeen-minute musical journey would pave the way for the performance finale. Bassist Brian Roy would hand Smith his bass and performed "Sports" before ending their set with "Aged White Cheddar," a stellar "Funk Cat," and concluding with a crowd favorite, "Wasted."

As the encore began, The Company could not help but continue with their joyous onstage high jinks by introducing the band Sauerkraut who was none other than Kendall Street Company's German-alter-ego performing a comical and sonic "Cats In Ze Haus."

Kendall Street Company

Kendall Street Company's performance showed that while they are brilliant in their festival appearances, they truly shine when given the time to explore all the corners and crevices of their songs with the time to improvise and find new ways to delight their fans.

If you have yet to see Kendall Street Company, we highly recommend seeing them when they come to a stage near you. We look forward to their many festival and venue appearances in the months and years to come.

Karina Rykman performs at The Atlantis
Concert Reviews

Karina Rykman Takes the Atlantis on a Joyride

On a brisk night on December 14th, the Atlantis—IMP's nostalgic nod to the original 9:30 Club—hosted bassist Karina Rykman in an electric performance. In a fitting tribute to her debut album, "Joyride," Rykman's vibrant presence transformed the venue into a lively canvas filled with colorful light, love, and lighthearted music. The brand new venue, a faithful recreation of the old 1980s nightclub, emanated a tangible energy often found in well-loved music halls—a perfect combination of modern amenities and divey aesthetic.

From the onset of the first song, "Beacon," Rykman's infectious energy enveloped the audience. A native New Yorker, Karina’s perpetual movement on stage added a kinetic dimension to the music, mirroring the fluidity between her bass lines and the pulsating beats from bandmates Adam November (guitar and synth wizardry) and Chris Corsico (drums).

The setlist unfolded as a dance party, featuring "Joyride" tracks like the title song and "All That You Wanted." Rykman's constant dance became a visual counterpart to the music, captivating the crowd and enhancing the overall experience. The set also featured staples of Rykman's catalog, including songs like the groovy "Plants," the funky "Dirty South," the tribute to Karina's roots known as "City Kids," the powerful angst of "Run of the Mill," and the euphoric "Elevator."

A standout moment was Rykman's cover of boygenius' "Satanist," where her contagious energy and thunderous bass shook the walls of the Atlantis. The Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" and Rykman's original tune "Atom Dance" fueled the audience's kinetic energy. The encore, featuring Blur's "Song 2," marked the night's peak. Rykman's energy and constant movement turned the venue into a small sea of shared exhilaration.

Coyote Island
Coyote Island

The evening started with a captivating set from Coyote Island, the brainchild of producer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike O'Hehir. Drawing from years of nationwide musical exploration, Coyote Island's roots in folk swiftly blossomed into a genre-defying fusion of psychedelic indie. Mike and his band of brothers delivered a captivating live performance, seamlessly translating the expansive soundscape from their recordings. The audience was swept away by the band's first hit single, "Here Before," a testament to their growing following. Coyote Island's live presence emanated good vibrations, dancey grooves, and tropical psychedelia—a sonic vacation that set the perfect tone for the night ahead with headliner Karina Rykman.

The Del McCoury Band performs at The Barns at WoflTrap in January 2023

The Del McCoury Band Set To Appear At The Barns For Five Spectacular Nights In January 2024

In the world of bluegrass music, there is only one 'Del.' - Del McCoury. His name is synonymous with bluegrass and he is the definition of a true patriarch and ambassador of bluegrass music.  If you love bluegrass music, and it seems like everyone in the DMV loves bluegrass music,  Del McCoury is front and center of our bluegrass heart.

Del puts the Del in DelFest and Even among the pantheon of music's finest artists, Del stands alone. His career started in 1963 when he was hired to play rhythm guitar by the father of bluegrass himself, Bill Monroe. The rest, you may say, is Bluegrass Hall of Fame history. There are few recording artists whose careers span as long as Del's, whose music resonates with fans as much, or who is as cherished, adored, and celebrated by his fans as Del is.

If you are looking for the quintessence of bluegrass music, this is the artist and act that needs to be at the top of your list as we know one can never get enough Del and his band. Attendees come for the incredible music of Del and his band but also fall in love with his infectious laugh as he captivates us with stories from the road.

Today, Del McCoury tours with his band, The Del McCoury Band, which includes Del's sons Ronnie McCoury (mandolin) and Rob McCoury (banjo), as well as Alan Bartram (bass), and five-time International Bluegrass Music Association Fiddler of the year Jason Carter (fiddle).

In 2023, Del McCoury and his namesake band, The Del McCoury Band, humbled the DMV with the number of appearances made in our region - three times at The Barnes of WolfTrap in January, an appearance at his namesake festival DelFest in May, and then once again at The Ramble Festival in October.

Strings and Stories with Del McCoury At The Barns Of Wolf Trap
We don’t recall a show we’ve been to before where it started OFF with a standing ovation for the band[...]

In January 2023, all three performances by The Del McCoury band quickly sold out. In 2024, Del and his band decided to appear at The Barnes FIVE times in January, so every bluegrass and Del McCoury Band fan can get their fix. Clear your calendars to see The Del McCoury Band perform at Wolf Trap on January 16th, 17th, 19th, 20th, and 21st.

During this holiday season, many of us see sugar plum fairies dancing in our heads, but every bluegrass fan sees the dancing of the members of The Del McCoury band as they dance about  the stage for coordinated harmonies as we all hear the sound of Del's infectious laugh ring in our ears.  All this musical magic while we all enjoy ourselves in the most intimate of musical settings - a less than 500 person capacity historic barn,  What more could a fan ask for!

We look forward to Del McCoury and his band starting off 2024 right with the DMV with five fantastic performances in January, and we look forward to enjoying Del's music and stories alongside you. Ticket links can be found below.

DelYeah! – DelFest 2024 Announces Their Initial Lineup

It is time to be festive for the holidays and we couldn't imagine anything else that would make us giddy with delight than the news of DelFest's initial lineup - DelYeah!

This year’s DelFest will, as usual, take place over Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26, 2024 and is the festival brainchild of Del McCoury and his extended McCoury family.  This year DelFest will be celebrating its 16th year!  Can you believe we have already had 15 magical DelFest editions - each one getting better and better and filled with enough musical history and memories to fill up your local library!

DelFest Soars Like Never Before And Launches A Spectacular 2023 Festival Season
Another trip through the Cumberland Gap to the promised land we call the Allegany County Fairgrounds was the way of[...]

DelFest will once again be held at the Allegany County Fairgrounds in beautiful Cumberland, MD.  DelFest originated from the desire to create a family-friendly music festival celebrating the rich legacy of McCoury music while creating a forum for world-class musical collaborations and showcasing fresh, new talent.

This festival is truly one of the most magical festivals in the region and is somewhat without words to describe it.  DelFest has special moments and keepsakes for everyone who attends - such is the diversity of entertainment and special moments throughout Allegany County Fairgrounds.  Some attendees talk about the Riverside Sessions, others talk about the secret sets they witnessed, while others talk about floating down the river on an inner tube, and everyone talks about the sounds of instruments playing at fireside jams throughout the fairgrounds.

Today is the day everyone’s been waiting for: The initial DelFest 2024 lineup is here!  DelFest just announced their initial lineup featuring some fan favorite returning artsist and some new aritsts.

The initial lineup for DelFest 2024 includes: The Del McCoury Band, The Travelin' McCoury's, Greensky Bluegrass, Old Crow Medicine Show, Sierra Ferrell, Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives, Leftover Salmon, Yonder Mountain String Band, Sam Grisman Project, Sister Sadie, Mr. Sun, Big Richards, Drè Anders, East Nash Grass, Dirty Grass Players, and Armchair Boogie, alongside Joe Craven who returns as the master of ceremonies.

DelFest 2024 Initial Lineup

We want to take a quick moment to shoulder-shimmy with delight and DMV pride as The Dirty Grass Players were announced as part of the initial lineup announcement.  We have followed this band and watched them grow over the years.  Last year they filled The DelFest Music Hall to capacity.  What a beautiful moment for the DMV as one of their very own had the presitgious music call overflowing and brimming with delight, dancing, and thunderous energy!  We hope to see them at one of the larger stages this year now that they have outgrown the music hall.

For those that have never attended DelFest, once you make the pilgrimage to Cumberland, Maryland, you will understand why this weekend is more than just a festival.  It is a beloved home that is firmly affixed to the concert calendar for so many across the country.   For those that have been to DelFest, this is a journey back to their home away from home - same campsite, same neighbors, same fun from sunrise to sunset, and memories that will last a lifetime.

In addition to traditional stage sets by these world-class artists, attendees can again expect to see one-of-a-kind collaborations, special guest sit-ins, various tributes to Del McCoury and his musical legacy, and intimate appearances from the aforementioned artists. Delfest will, as usual, be immediately preceded by the 3-day DelFest Academy hosted by The Travelin’ McCourys and other all-star players.

This is what you can expect if you attend the DelFest Academy this year.

For music fans across the country, we know that this initial lineup announcement will make you as happy and excited as we are.  Oh, the tremendous adventures we will have on the other side of winter!  We already have the sounds of DelFest artists ringing in our ears and dancing like beautiful sugar plum faries.

Beach Fossils perform at The 9:30 Club
Concert Reviews

Beach Fossils Bring Euphoric Chaos to the 9:30 Club

Beach Fossils’ tour might be for their album Bunny, but it is far from cute and cuddly. Although emitting soothing sounds of indie rock and dream pop, their concerts feature slamming bursts of chaotic energy. Spinning a few of their tracks, one might think a herd of mellow red-eyed individuals would line venue walls, swaying calmly with every fleeting note. But that is not only what the night would hold.

Ascending from Brooklyn, New York, the four-piece band currently includes Dustin Payseur (vocals, guitar), Jack Doyle Smith (bass), Tommy Davidson (guitar), and Anton Hochheim (drums). Earlier this year they released their fourth studio album Bunny, prompting their next string of shows across the globe.

Beach Fossils

One of those stops was DC. On Saturday, November 25, Beach Fossils geared up their sold-out early show at the 9:30 Club. The band was accompanied by Virginia-based Turnover, an introspective indie rock/pop group that drew listeners into the night.

Opening on an intoxicating note, Turnover roused fans with an ensemble of hits, starting with Tears of Change. Throughout their 30 minute set, echoes of Super Natural, Humblest of Pleasures, and Myself in the Way caressed fans' ears. The group ended with uplifting Take My Head, their second most popular single.

Beach Fossils

Prompt on their arrival, Beach Fossils took to the stage amongst shrieks of eager fans salivating for the first note. Bunny’s biggest hit Don't Fade Away swirled through speakers, with arms and mouths flying open to every lyric. Shortly after was Sugar off Somersault, a hidden delicacy sandwiched in the set list. At the surf rock tune of What A Pleasure, the crowd grew increasingly excited, digging elbows into one another by the rail.

Beach Fossils

“Hold on hold on,” said Payseur, cutting the track. He lept down from the stage to inquiry what the ruckus amongst the crowd was. After hearing out a fan he began to explain, “I don’t know if all of you know this, but sometimes at Beach Fossil shows people like to mosh.” He then directed those who wanted to mosh towards the back and verbalized his frustrations for being unable to play What A Pleasure. “I really wanted to play What A Pleasure but now we can’t because there’s a show after this. No fighting at my shows.”

Beach Fossils

The rest of the night went relatively smoothly as the band scoured their entire discography, sprinkling in at least one song from every album. Of course, most played songs came from Bunny, featuring Sleeping On My Own, Dare Me, and Seconds, amongst others. During Tough Love a crowd surfer that failed march back to the crowd bolted towards the stage, eventually jumping up and down between band members before being chased back stage. But, according to their speech earlier, this was probably wasn’t a huge surprise.

Beach Fossils

From Clash the Truth, Beach Fossils showcased Shallow and Sleep Apnea, even sharing an intimate moment with the crowd, as played under the illumination of iPhone flashlights. Adversity was the only single from What A Pleasure making it to the show after the scraping of the title track, and Somersault made a few appearances, with This Year and almost show closer May 1st.

With a heroic twist, Beach Fossils returned for an encore, although being pressed for time. Surprisingly, the group played three additional song- Crashed Out, Daydream, and long-time favorite Down The Line. Throughout the night, the band’s infectious energy wound bodies around every note. Even with the three-part encore, fans itched for more. If you’re searching for an electric show, look no further. Catch Beach Fossils during their next performance!

The Paper Kites Leave Crowd Soaring After Unforgettable Howard Theatre Performance

It’s impossible to attend a show at the Howard Theatre without taking note of its grandeur. Towering balconies and cushy booths create an orbicular effect that feels both communal and private; each corner of the historic building a sandpit of inescapable intimacy. And I can’t think of more appropriate music to fill the space than that of The Paper Kites.

The night began with The Cactus Blossoms, who didn't need to command attention when they stepped into the already packed house. The brothers quickly lured in stragglers and effortlessly persuaded bar patrons to turn. Nostalgia clouded the room; their aching Everly Brothers-esque vocals laid a wistful foundation for the main act.

Before a full Paper Kites ensemble emerged, lead singer Sam Bentley appeared. Legs casually draped off a stool, mirroring the elaborate curtains behind him. He eased into “Between the Houses” and set a familiarly meditative tone for the evening. Before long the lights swelled into a golden glow, revealing the remaining Kites: Christina Lacy, Sam Rasmussen, David Powys, and Josh Bentley. Joined by supporting artists Chris Panousakis, Hannah Cameron, and Matt Dixon, the impressive eight-piece pulsed into “Till the Flame Turns Blue” then "Hurts So Good."

Once the soothing chords faded, Bentley took a minute to chat. He fondly referred to the prior year's show as if we were all in attendance. I'm sure most were, because the congregation nods knowingly as if it were an annual reunion of close friends. Bentley wittingly pointed out a sign in the front row that insisted on hearing “Nothing More Than That” and obliged much to the delight of the crowd. I checked my setlist, read the same title, and chuckled at the guise. Admittedly, I was just as thrilled to hear it.

We slid into a cascade of fan favorites, each holding a unique meaning to all. Bentley's amicable banter softened the longing emanating from the soft string of songs. There's a simplicity in the trail as if they were just passing thoughts, a quick note you write when you feel the twinge of regret. "Marietta" pushed into "Tenenbaum," then "Burn The Night Away."

As if the set needed to become more soulful, Bentley and Lacy made their way to centerstage. A suddenly dim room with just a spotlight, the two slipped into “For All You Give” while sweethearts sank a little deeper into each other. We breathed the lingering chords of the near-accapellic number while Bentley began picking cheerfully; a septet converged around a single condenser mic. Honey-like harmonies enveloped the room just as tightly.

Sensing that the heavier “June’s Stolen Car” would be too intense after the an incident with a concertgoer, the band materialized with the softer “Without Your Love” before replaying the unfinished song. The crew then barreled into “Black & Thunder'' where David Powys burrowed into a guitar solo that was somehow as soothing as it was electrifying.

Much to the crowd’s delight, a soulful rendition of Adrianne Lenker’s “anything” added a complimentary deviation that eased seamlessly into the original quintet converging centerstage. The rhythmic strumming of “Paint” evoked cheers before swiftly halting any lingering claps into a collective silence. We all settled into the soft tones as the lyrics washed over us; “I need a love just like you gave, I haven’t found it yet, found it yet” wavering the line of woe and want, hurt and hope. The theme persists through the final number, “Darkness at My Door.” Upon the last choir-like note of “won’t you shine, shine, down a little light, Lord? On the darkness at my door” the room erupted in a standing ovation that wouldn’t dissolve til The Paper Kites returned to the stage for their communal encore.

Before lilting into “By My Side,” a ballad of abiding love, Bentley falls into his familiar banter, but this time invites the audience to join in the chorus like we weren’t going to sing along anyway. No one needs an explanation, a practice round, or even to be told the song; we’ve been waiting all night. A collective chorus reciprocates the title as Bentley sings, “it’s where I want to be, the only place, forevermore.” Sam Jarousek's stage lights echoed the intensity of the upbeat "Electric Indigo" by sending deep blue streams into the crowd to accompany his intricate ceiling visuals. When their final number subsided, the full house flared with delight. The musicians graciously bowed, waved, and even gave a thumbs up or two. "See you next year: same time, same place" was reciprocated in applause.

No one was rushed to leave; friends lingered before seeing break down as a cue to head out. Outside, long after the show ended, band members happily chatted with fans. No irritation or inconvenience; they seemed truly grateful to have such devoted supporters, and I thought about how perfect that image represented what the night was all about: conversation. The Paper Kites didn't just share their music with us; they invited us into a conversation that will surely continue.

Friko Is Coming To DC9 On November 30th

Charming Chicago indie rock band Friko prepares to woo the district this Thursday, setting the stage for their upcoming album, Where We’ve Been, Where We Go From Here. The dynamic duo, comprised of Niko Kapetan (guitar/vocals) and Bailey Minzenberger (drummer) are stretching their talents across the east and midwest during their latest tour.

The five-stop string of performances on this mini-tour comes hot on the heels of their latest single, Crashing Through, an electric yet heart wrenching beam of passion. In a push and pull of emotion, the chorus reads “I haven’t said what I mean to say/ I haven’t done what I mean to do/ ‘cause every coward looks away/ from all the light crashing through.”

These introspective lyrics present the ever aching question, Kapetan describes as “wanting better for yourself and the people around you, but wondering how you can possibly do that with the world we live in.” Friko’s piercing lyrics paired with somber guitar hums and soft snares gently immerse listeners’ ears in a wave of sweet pain.

This latest single trails the success of Crimson to Chrome, the band’s first spell-binding track of 2023. Climbing the charts, the song amassed over 250,000 streams on Spotify and reigned #1 on Siriux XMU for three weeks.

Now, Crashing Through paves way for Friko’s debut album, Where We’ve Been, Where We Go From Here, set to release on February 16, 2024. Coproduced by Scott Tallarida and Jack Henry, the album features nine enthralling tracks comprised of post-punk, chamber pop, and experimental rock.

Don’t miss your chance to experience an star-striking night. See Friko live this Thursday, November 30th!
