Vakili Band Is Coming To The Pocket On October 26th

Vakili Band is set to perform at The Pocket in Washington, DC, on October 26th.

This band is no stranger to Washington DC, and they on tour supporting their their third full-length album, Honey, which was released on September 28, 2023.   The fiery five-piece rock band is fronted by Lily Vakili, a savvy street poet who finds the sweet spot in the nexus formed by Patti Smith’s loose-limbed punk swagger, Grace Slick’s inviting psychedelia and the throaty blues-belting of a Janis Joplin, not to mention the full-throated howl of a Grace Potter or Brittany Howard

With roots firmly planted in the late-’70s “Ford to New York drop dead” headlines era, Vakili pays tribute to those seminal punk influences on “Mapplethorpe,” her ode to the love affair between the provocative photographer and Patti Smith depicted in her book Just Kids, with a lyrical nod to the “broken boys and torn-up men/tough as licorice dribbling down my chin.”

The New York Dolls bump-and-grind meets the deadpan nihilism of the Velvet Underground in “Yves Calls Her Betty,” which is based on an interview with designer Yves Saint-Laurent about his blonde “female double,” Betty Catroux, a sly look at the artist-muse relationship buttressed by the kick-ass bottom of Jovanis and Kuba.

The shows are about as pure rock-n-roll as you can get and it will make you feel like should be smoking and drinking a beer in a dark, smokey corner of CBGBs or The Rat. Here's some more info and their latest album

We encourage everyone to kick out the jams at The Pocket this coming Thursday - this is quiet the hidden gem and we think it is just what your soul needs right now.

Cosmic Country Bliss: Daniel Donato’s Stellar Journey at Pearl Street Warehouse

Friday the 13th might be considered an unlucky day for some. Still, for those fortunate enough to be at Pearl Street Warehouse last Friday, it was a night filled with cosmic country magic courtesy of Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country. The sold-out venue was alive with energy as concertgoers eagerly anticipated a night of stellar music under a massive American flag hanging from the ceiling—coated in the neon lights emanating from the stage—foretelling the psychedelic Americana that was about to occur.

As the evening began, the atmosphere inside Pearl Street Warehouse was already buzzing with excitement. The cozy, intimate setting was the perfect backdrop for a night of cosmic country, a genre that blends traditional country twang with psychedelic and spacey improvisational elements. The venue's garage door walls were rolled up, letting in the cool autumn air and releasing cosmic music into the alley at Pearl Street. Daniel Donato, a young guitar virtuoso and rising star in the jam band scene, was the perfect maestro to take us on this musical journey with his Cosmic Country band, consisting of Will McGee (bass), Nathan "Sugar Leg" Aronowitz (keys and guitar), and Jon Radford (drums).

The show started with a sense of mystique, as the stage was bathed in moody neon lighting from the Pearl Street Warehouse sign, setting the scene for what was to come. Donato emerged with his signature long hair and a new custom Fender Telecaster, ready to transport the audience into the realms of cosmic country.

The first set was a cosmic journey, starting with "Why You Been Gone So Long?" and moving into the mesmerizing "Forgotten Days." "Valhalla" transported us to a mythical realm, and the powerful "Locomotive No. 9" flowed seamlessly into the ethereal "Rose in a Garden." "Broadside Ballad" captivated the audience, and "Hangman's Reel" had everyone dancing delightedly. "Doggone Cowboy" and "GRITS" brought the first set to a close with a cosmic, foot-stomping flourish led by Will McGee's thundering bass lines and Jon Radford's shuffling backbeats.

The second set was equally enchanting, starting with Sugar Leg leading "Luck of the Draw" and "Sugar Leg Rag." "Sugar Shack," another Sugar Leg-led tune, sweetened the atmosphere as Donato and his band showcased their funk chops with Aronowitz joining him on guitar. The haunting "Faded Lovin'" cast a spell on the audience, and they were further entranced by "Hard to Sell." "Weathervane" led into the dreamy "Blue Skies" and returned to "Weathervane," creating a mesmerizing musical loop. "Devil in a Sleeping Bag" and "Ten Feet of Rope" rounded out the set, leaving the crowd in awe of the band's cosmic country prowess.

Daniel Donato and his band returned to the stage for the encore, and the crowd erupted with excitement. They launched into an electrifying "Big River," and the venue came alive with the spirit of the music. "Orange Blossom Special" followed, bringing the evening to a spectacular, foot-stomping close. The show ended with a stunning encore, leaving the audience yearning for more cosmic country magic. As the final notes of the night resonated through the venue, it was evident that Daniel Donato and his band had transcended the boundaries of traditional country music and delivered a truly cosmic experience.

Big Cruz - Cruz Control

Rapper Big Cruz Coasts Through Industry Streets With Debut Album Cruz Control

Ascending from the roots of Albania, DC-raised rapper Big Cruz is rattling the music scene with the release of his fourth official album Cruz Control. Tapping into the depths of his upbringing, greatest losses, and rise to music, Cruz serves listeners a diverse plate of gripping tracks. From vibrant highs to chilling lows, this album scours the intertwinement of musical elevation and sentiment.

It all started in his early childhood when Cruz grew magnetized to constructing poems. Weaving in and out of trouble, he often found himself subject to long study hall hours, where his musical instincts first churned. After taking a few warm-up laps around the microphone, Cruz recorded his first-ever song in his home country.  But it wasn’t until 2015 that he released his first  mixtape, Facts Only, laying the foundation for his music career and entrepreneurial journey.

“Looking at myself back then and then looking at myself now, there’s been a lot of growth,” said Big Cruz reflecting on his experiences. “You gotta make mistakes to learn. That's how I see it. Every mistake is not a mistake, It's a lesson.”

Big Cruz

Since then, Big Cruz released a plentitude of tracks, garnering substantial attention from listeners across the globe. During his ascension to stardom, he was consigned by DMV staple Yung Gleesh, making ripples across the local music scene. In 2021, he dropped international sensation Banda, whose traction signaled a pivotal progression in his career, accumulating over 200,000 streams on Spotify.

Now, accustomed to the fast life, Big Cruz is coasting through the charts with Cruz Control. Featuring 11 galvanic hits, the album explores the multi-dimensions of Cruz- from the grueling past to the promising present. In a dynamic approach, each song features an enthralling beat blended with gut-punching lyrics.

Big Cruz

“I want to take control of listeners’ ears, whoever's tapped in,” said Big Cruz. “I want them to hear me and really take control of what they want to hear next.”

Big Cruz - Cruz Control

True to its name, the album serves as a road trip essential, according to Cruz. With one hand on the steering wheel and the other recording, Cruz crafted almost 300 songs on the open road. In a two year long process, they were condensed into just two handfuls of polished tracks, with a few stragglers set to release later for fans.

Winding with its motivational intro, the album dives head-first into three thrashing bangers, Basics, Need Em, and Skrt Off. Fourth on the album showcases Dear Heaven, an insiders look at the hardships Cruz and others grapple with. Coinciding with similar themes are Soldier, a depiction of adversity in a third-world country and Devi, a front-to-back portrait of Cruz’s path.

Big Cruz - Cruz Control

“I've never had a problem giving my side of my feelings, my emotions,” said Cruz, verbalizing his outlet. “That's what makes me an artist, that's my passion behind this shit. I love that shit. I do it for a living. I don't do it just for fun.”

Much like his album, Cruz is a multifaceted artist. Subsidiary to his music career is his record label, Facts Only Music Group, a staple part in his current trajectory. Although created only one year ago, the company evolved silently since his start. Born with an entrepreneurial itch, Cruz foresaw business plans before even adopting his stage name.

Big Cruz

“I always wanted my own music entity,” said Cruz regarding his record label. “So creating this was the first step. It's something that I've been practicing since I was 15-16. I was doing merch, getting sweatshirts together. Then when I was in high school, I was selling them to my friends- $30 a piece. And then it was elevating and elevating to where I had release parties, starting working with different companies.”

The music organization serves to elevate creatives in the music scene and bolster their careers. Through his philosophy of “own your own”, Cruz established a self-rooted empire to ground his arc. As a successful musician and business owner, he offers aspiring musicians with a valuable piece of advice:

Big Cruz

“Don’t believe people selling you dreams. That’s my main thing I wish I was told on the come up. Don’t believe the cap and keep your circle tight.”

Elevating Us All – The Ramble Festival 2023 Proves To Be The Most Spectacular Independent Music Festival In The DMV

On Friday, October 6th, 2023, the gates for The Ramble Festival opened in Darlington, MD.  From the moment guests arrived at Camp Ramblewood, it was apparent, just like last year, that this is one of the most memorable and spectacular independent music festivals you will find anywhere in the United States.  Setting the tone this year, festival-goers were greeted by none other than organizers and figureheads Jason and Brick.  They greeted each vehicle with gleaming eyes and beaming smiles, handing out high-fives and greetings galore.  Just a few feet from our gracious greeters, one would see the Ramble Buskers performing for you - led by the busking ambassador and Baltimore musician Caleb Stine.  Before you even stepped foot on festival grounds, it became apparent that the festival creatives were intent on making this a memorable and unique weekend for each and every person.

If the way one was greeted wasn't memorable and spectacular enough, the music, attractions, vendors, and campgrounds would provide the backdrop for a weekend that will echo deep in the memory of everyone at Ramble Festival 2023: artists, staff, and attendees alike.  At the core of this festival's beliefs is the following ethos, "At the Ramble Festival, there are no VIP tickets because everyone is a VIP.  We're elevating the festival experience for everyone a couple notches rather than elevating it significantly for a select few."  This statement is not just festival website copy text - but a deeply held core belief that the festival would show attendees throughout the weekend.  All fans were able to walk straight up to any concert rail, use the same bathrooms, and be treated to personal interactions with artists and staff alike.  Speaking of elevating the festival experience, organizers truly elevated the festival this year.  For those in attendance last year, you remember that no small detail was spared, and everyone had a truly spectacular time.  Last year, even small touches and details were attended to, such as small fairy lights in every portable restroom stall  This year, some superficial elements were elevated - better stage lights, more bathrooms, an improved kids zone, a geodesic dome lounge, and concert projections upon the barn.  The place where the festival experience was truly elevated was collaborative sets that blended two bands, an artist and an emerging artist at large,  and the most special of all - hidden treasures for us to find and experience.  This year, The Ramble Festival had three secret sets sprinkled throughout the festival grounds and unique painted stones and bricks, which promised special prizes for those who found them.

Like a great baker or chef, founders Brick and Jason carefully picked the correct ingredients to create the most delightful musical recipe/lineup for this year's festival.  This year, each crisscrossed the country in search of artists who would create the most cohesive, eclectic, and melt-your-soul lineup.  Several of last year's favorite artists returned once more, including Caleb Stine, Kendall Street Company, Bella's Bartok, Dogs In A Pile, Naptown Brass Band, The Dirty Grass Players, The Travelin McCoury's, and Neighbor.  New to this year's lineup was The Del McCoury Band, TAUK Moore, The Motet, Magic Beans, Perpetual Groove, Danielle Williams, The Deer Creek Sharpshooters, Fishing for Hippies, Isaac Hadden Organ Trio, Rebekah Todd, Red Clay Revival, Shadowgrass, Sneezy, The Sweet Lillies, Uncle Kunkel's One Gram Band, and Yam Yam.  Additionally, the festival added not one but two artists at large - artist at large Kanika Moore and emerging artist at large Isaac Hadden.  Some bands would be blended together to form late evening super bands: "Magic Benders" featuring Magic Beans & The Hillbenders; "Sneezy Street" featured  Kendall Street Company & Sneezy; "Dirty Dogs" featured Dogs In A Pile & The Dirty Grass Players.

With cooler temperatures sneaking in, hours of daylight getting fewer and fewer and holidays just over the horizon, we have[...]

Each band was carefully selected and added in the right amounts to make the most delicious festival recipe we could hope for: a dash of Shadowgrass and Dirty Grass here, some Sweet Lillies & Magic Beans for some sweetness there, some funky Yam Yam and Natlie Brooke there, a healthy dash of Bella's Bartok for zest, and some Kanika and Isaac to bind all the ingredients together.  To add some sparkle to the day a healthy dose of Naptown Brass Band second-lining around the grounds twice a day, and some late night jams to make the nights go by ever so sweetly.

For three glorious days and three frenetically joyous nights, the residents of this temporary harmonious enclave celebrated life with radiating joy, music, and dance.  While we have described the unbelievable atmosphere of The Ramble Festival, we have not scratched the surface recalling the unforgettable musical moments we experienced at The Ramble Festival 2023.  Here are just a few memories we took away from The Ramble Festival, and this does not include the hundreds of special moments that took place during the festival.

  • Unbelievable performances by Deer Creek Sharpshooters.  They were amongst the first bands to go on stage Friday morning and brought us to bluegrass church on Sunday morning.  Most notably, passing around a little brown southern liquid to salute the crowd with.

  • Shadowgrass came on stage during a rain storm, which they apparently chased away with their fierce performance.  We believe Kyser George's intense guitar picking alone blew the storm clouds away.  There was a spectacular "Crazy" by Cee Lo Green.  Madison Morris sang "Midnight In Harlem" by Tedeschi Trucks and we can only hope that one day Morris can sing this song alongside Susan Tedeschi.

  • Bella's Bartok's surreal stage presence and gypsy-punk meets folk as produced by Tim Burton.  This band was unforgettable during their Beer Hall and main stage performances.  This is a must-see act if you have yet to see Bella’s Bartok perform.

  • A secret set by Magic Beans in which they performed on the porch of their camp cabin.  This was the first secret set and caught everyone off guard.  Word quickly spread as campers stopped in their tracks and gathered around this cabin to witness such an unexpected and intimate performance.

  • A secret by Neighbor in The Labyrinth.  This was a rare Neighbor acoustic set featuring some of their most beloved songs.  During "Pine Tree," after the lyrics "I could hear a pin drop," the band paused the performance for what seemed like an eternity so fans could listen for a pin drop as the wind blew through the trees.

  • A secret set by Ross Bogan at the pond.  Bogan would perform new songs that he was contemplating releasing.  Kanika Moore joined Bogan to perform "Ship of Fools" by The Grateful Dead.  In what was  perhaps the most cherished moment of the weekend, a surprise engagement took place midway through the performance.  After the proposal and tearful ‘yes’ the couple embraced one another, Bogan and Moore performed "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young - the bride-to-be's favorite song.  The festival worked closely behind the scenes to ensure everyone would remember this moment for a lifetime.

  • The Dirty Grass Players filled the Beer Hall Stage to near capacity.  This would be the second time they filled a Beer Hall Stage, having filled the one at DelFest earlier this year.  Alex Berman would note that they had a substitution of guitarist and bassist so long as they were down one person, they would be up one person by adding a fiddler to the band's composition during Ramble Festival.

  • The late-night set of "Sneezy Street" was so filled with musicians at the late-night stage that the musicians filled the width of the stage three rows deep.  The super jam would perform "Brick House" by The Commodores featuring an energetic Brick singing the lyrics on stage as the crows sand on.  The lyrics were enthusiastically changed to "It's Brick's House!"

  • Del McCoury performing and taking requests - as always.  McCoury would oblige fans with  "Streets of Baltimore" to a huge roar.  Darlington is a mere fifty miles away from Baltimore.  Kanika Moore sat in with the Del McCoury Band to sing "Tennessee Waltz."  Moore came out wrapped in a heavy blanket as she confessed she didn't bring the right clothes to this festival to accommodate the brisk temperatures.  Someone from the audience yelled out that someone should bring her a suit to match the rest of Del's band.  This was received with a large roar of approval.

Oceans Calling Festival Roars Ashore In 2023

The skies were in a moody dance leading up to this year's Oceans Calling Music Festival, and storms were threatening the coast. After last year's cancellation due to a storm, this left festival goers uneasy. The festival was one weekend off from getting ruined again by a storm, Ophelia, which would have been quite ironic given that The Lumineers were a headlining act. However, Mother Nature heard the cries of the music fans yearning for one final hurrah in the 2023 festival season. Collaborating with Rockville, Maryland's O.A.R., festival organizers delivered a debut music festival, which was surely etched into the history books.

The music festival spanned three days, commencing on Friday, September 29th. The boardwalk was buzzing with music enthusiasts from around the world. Strolling down the boardwalk, it was impossible not to stumble upon impromptu hotel balcony karaoke sessions, adding to the festival's vibrant atmosphere.

Friday started off the festival on a high note with amazing performances from the likes of Peach Pit, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Slightly Stoopid, Third Eye Blind, Alanis Morrissette, Michael Franti & Spearhead, O.A.R. and many more.

Morrissette lit up the stage and opened her set with the iconic "All I Really Want" from the bestselling album Jagged Little Pill. The crowd was not merely engaged; they were electrified, a sea of voices screaming every lyric. Many of whom were living their teenage dreams.

Jack Johnson Oceans Calling 2023

The night finished off with Jack Johnson serenading the crowd under a full moon peeking out from behind the clouds. Could it truly be a beach festival without Jack Johnson in attendance? Johnson brought the members of Slightly Stoopid out for a delightful cover of Tom Petty's "You Don't Know How it Feels". Before playing his signature hit, "Banana Pancakes," Jack Johnson playfully tipped his hat to the absent rain, offering his thanks for staying at bay.

Alexandria-based Virginia Coalition (VACO) got things rolling on Saturday afternoon. Andrew Poliakoff showed the washboard who was boss while Eli Staples had the keytar laying down some groovy riffs, which had the crowd howling. VACO brought an energy nothing short of electric, setting the stage for yet another day of music featuring Gin Blossoms, Dispatch, Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals, Jimmy Eat World, Noah Kahan, Incubus, and others.

Saturday night reached its climax as the legendary guitarist John Mayer delivered a mesmerizing solo performance. The beach transformed into a vast expanse of people, swaying in harmony to songs, "Who Says," "Neon," and "Stop This Train". Mayer took to the piano to perform "You're Gonna Live Forever in Me" and "Changing."

But let's take a quick break from the music and talk about the food options for a minute. Not only did organizers have some outstanding food vendors come into the festival, with everything ranging from lobster rolls, birria quesadillas, and some extremely fancy corndogs from Wookie Dogs. Festivalgoers also had access to many boardwalk staples within the festival grounds. Such as Trashers Boardwalk Fries, Tony Lukes Cheesesteaks, and Dumser's Ice Cream just to name a few.

In addition to the musical acts, Oceans Calling also had chefs on the lineup! Chef Robert Irvine, most notably known from his Food Network show, "Restaurant: Impossible", took to the Carousel stage Friday and Saturday afternoon with guests Michael Franti, Marc Roberge, Richard On, and Jon Lampley. Amidst the cooking tips and tricks, there was no shortage of witty banter, ultimately leading to MC Jason Biggs waterfalling olive oil and O.A.R.'s Jon Lampley being challenged to complete 100 pushups before Chef Irvine and his team were able to finish cooking the meal. On Sunday afternoon, Chopped judge Amanda Freitag helmed the culinary session.  Oceans Calling Festival this year was not only a music lovers paradise but a food lovers paradise as well.

Celebrity Entertainment

But wait, there's more! Oceans Calling didn't limit its offerings to just great food and music. The festival also treated attendees to complimentary access to most rides at Jolly Roger at the Pier! Festival goers had the chance to take the Ferris wheel to the top and look down on the vast sea of people below. They could also hop into a cart and take a thrilling ride through the Morbid Manor.

And guess what? Kids under eight got in for free! That's right, each ticketed adult could bring along two children at no additional charge. Besides the free pier rides, children (and adults) were able to roam the boardwalk arcades to rack up some tickets and score some cool nicknacks. Oceans Calling truly catered to guests of all ages, ensuring everyone had a memorable experience.

The final day of Oceans Calling was off to a great start when the weather forecast had nothing but sunshine in store for festival goers. Pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph took center stage Sunday afternoon, showing Ocean City what a gospel bluesy jam band is all about. Randolph's guitar virtuosity wowed the crowd, setting the tone for what lay ahead.

Following Randolph, ALO (a.k.a. Animal Liberation Orchestra), stepped into the limelight. They took to the stage wielding some incredible mustaches and laying down even more incredible riffs, which ignited a sandy barefoot boogie.

Oceans Calling

The music continued to pulse through the sea breeze with Love & Special Sauce, Driver Era, Fitz & the Tantrums, and The Wall Flowers, keeping the crowd on their toes and dancing throughout the afternoon. Southern California-based Dirty Heads, had the crowd jumping and singing along to tunes best listened to with your feet in the sand. Fans went crazy when they heard the beginning of hit song "My Sweet Summer."

Oceans Calling provided many ADA viewing platforms and other accommodations. Also in attendance were multiple ASL interpreters ready to ensure everyone, regardless of their abilities, could fully enjoy the music.

Oceans Calling

Festival partners O.A.R. rocked the golden hour set, bringing out friends who were at the festival as well as some surprise guests. Andy Poliakoff of Virginia Coalition joined the band on stage for another heartfelt Tom Petty tribute of "I Won't Back Down". O.A.R. shocked the crowd and brought Darryl "DMC" McDaniels and DJ Charlie Chan on stage to perform songs, including; Ram Jam's "Black Betty", which DMC dedicated to Betty White, "Fight for your Right", "It's Tricky", and Aerosmiths "Walk this Way". As if that weren't enough, O.A.R. continued to surpass expectations and brought out Richie Sambora who dished out some electrifying guitar riffs and sang Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" and "Livin on a Prayer".

After the electrifying performance by O.A.R. and their special guests, the stages were graced by Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats performing hits such as, "S.O.B." and "I Need Never Get Old," while Grace Potter enchanted the audience with song including "Medicine" and "Paris (oh la la)".

Weezer took the stage, and the crowd erupted with excitement. It was like a bunch of kids in a candy store, except instead of candy, they were about to devour some sweet Weezer riffs. Rivers Cuomo, sporting his thick-rimmed glasses, filled the air with riffs that transported many back in time, while Scott Shriner had his double-neck guitar/bass combo ready to unleash his distinctive and unforgettable fills. Weezer went on to play hits such as "Beverly Hills," "Undone," and "Say It Ain't So."

The Lumineers

Wrapping up the festival Sunday was a soul-stirring performance by The Lumineers. From themes of love and happiness to the gritty depths of addiction, their songs encompass a full spectrum of emotions. The moon lit up the sky, accompanied by Jupiter shining bright next to it. Their reflection danced on the water, providing a beautiful backdrop to end the weekend. The Lumineers graced Ocean City with some of their greatest hits, including, "Ho Hey," Brightside," and "Gloria" - a perfect ending to a perfect edition of Oceans Calling Festival.

After three glorious days of music in Ocean City,  Maryland, the musical storm that is Oceans Calling blew back out to sea and will come back ashore again in 2024.  This year's festival sold out in a quick minute so we highly recommend that you sign-up for their mailing list and add the festival to your socials if you want to purchase tickets before they sell out again in 2024.  Based on what we witnessed at this years edition, we can hardly wait to see what beachside shenanigans and sing-alongs we have waiting for us in 2024.

Andy Frasco & the U.N. perform at The Atlantis

Andy Frasco & the U.N. Brings The Party To The Atlantis

Earlier this year, The Atlantis opened its doors to a jaw dropping forty-four all-star performance grand opening series, beginning with an explosive opening night on May 30th by none other than the Foo Fighters and ending on September 29th with Maggie Rogers.

An "Old School" Marquee at The Atlantis

Picking the first performance beyond the initial lineup was no easy task, but The Atlantis selected the perfect artist to kick off the next chapter in The Atlantis' history by choosing none other than Andy Frasco & the U.N. on October 1, 2023. The initial series of shows was picked by lottery, and only 20,000 tickets were allotted from the half a million ticket requests. This would be the first night the casual ticket buyer could experience this magnificent new venue, and tickets almost immediately sold out.

Any Andy Frasco & the U.N. performance is an energetic and electrifying experience that combines elements of rock, funk, blues, and soul with a heavy dose of humor and audience interactions. One might best describe a performance by Frasco and his rapscallions as an out-of-control circus of pure ecstasy and joyful frenetic energy unleashed on stage.

Before Frasco took to the stage, his friends from Brooklyn, New York, would perform - Cool Cool Cool. This band is a seven-piece funk and R&B band that took up the full breadth of The Atlantis' small and intimate stage. Cool Cool Cool commanded this musical pulpit, powering out funky grooves with a deep horn section and brilliant vocals. After a blistering 40 minutes, Cool Cool Cool would end their performance with a thundering version of "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac.

Cool Cool Cool

Slightly after 9 PM Andy Frasco & the U.N. took the stage to thundering applause. Alongside Andrew Frasco (lead vocals, keys), Ernie Chang (saxophone), Shawn Eckels (guitar, vocals), Andee "Beats" Avila (drums, vocals), and Floyd Kellogg (bass guitar) enthusiastically jumped on stage, fully enjoying the roar of the crowd. The performance would begin much like any of their performances - unpredictability and joyous improvisation.

Several instruments were without power, and as a tour roadie and road manager furiously identified the faulty connections, Frasco quickly adjusted the performance to ensure that their typical all-out frenetic pandemonium of a performance would ensue. Frasco acknowledged this was the first ticketed show, and he said triumphantly, "Let's christen this bitch," and a short time later, he handed his microphone to a young child in the front row who announced, "Let the games begin!"

Frasco would spend the evening performing once again like this was his last day on earth, and he was going to throw the best party anyone could hope for.

With a thousand fleeting memories of joyful euphoria and emotion, we remember this.

  • Despite the venue being a brand-new building, Frasco's raucous performance had the walls physically shaking and the brand-new floors were literally bouncing from all the enthusitic dancing.

Songs:

  • "I Want To Break Free" by Queen.
  • "Pour Some Sugar On Me" by Def Leppard.
  •  "Vasoline" by Stone Temple Pilots.
  • "Ramble On" by Led Zeppelin sung by Shawn Eckles
  • "Slow Ride" by Foghat.
  • A debut of a new song written the day before to which Frasco said, "So if it sucks, forget about it... We are like Phish. We write a new song and just play it."
  • "Waiting Room" by Fugazi sung by Floyd Kellogg. A fitting tribute to his favorite D.C. band. It is worth noting that Fugazi was a staple at the original 9:30 Club, for which The Atlantis is modeled on.
  • "We're an American Band" by Grand Funk Railroad.  Frasco would end the show by stating, "Cause we are in DC, let's play this!"

Moments:

  • Frasco dived into the crowd with a bottle of Jameson in hand as he swam to the soundboard and back again.
  • Frasco yelled, "Let's keep this party going, we need to christen this bitch" followed by him jumping into the crowd with a celebratory Hora.
  • While there were not any local performers sitting in with tonight's performance, Frasco drew upon the horn and vocalists from Cool Cool Cool to join him on stage.

On this tour, the band will feature many of the magnificent new songs from their latest release - L'Optimist. This album, released on August 11th of this year, is perhaps their finest and most complex album to date. We see Frasco's lyrical style maturing as he continues his self-exploration and personal discovery while maintaining the positivity that he is known for.   If you have not done so already, this album should be listened to immediately and often. If you have not seen Andy Frasco & the U.N. recently, listening to them perform these songs live is reason enough to see them perform this tour.  We loved hearing "Iowa Moon" during the encore, and we know you will too.

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros featuring the Wolf Pack at Pier Six Pavilion
Concert Reviews, Photography

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros Howl at the Full Moon in Baltimore

"The bottom line of the whole scene is simply stated: there is nothing in the world like a Grateful Dead concert–period. Never will be." This quotation from Jon Williams is even more true today than when he said it in 1974 in the Grateful Dead Movie. The uniqueness of a Dead show–or any Dead-related project–is steeped in a complex medley of American-born music, drawing from rock n' roll, jazz, bluegrass, gospel, fusion, and country and blended with a heavy dose of 1960s psychedelic energy. The band's catalog also contains hundreds of original songs and covers from which they build unique setlists each night. This impressive blend of musical showmanship is further embellished with deep exploratory improvisations, ensuring that every single Grateful Dead show is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for each audience and band member.

The fans of the Grateful Dead, also known as Deadheads, are also a significant part of what makes a Grateful Dead concert so special. This tight-knit community is a family of music lovers that has developed over the nearly 60-year history of the band. Their fanhood, often bordering on rabid fanaticism, is on full display at every show as they follow the Dead across the country, speaking to each other about Dead culture in an almost-secret language trying to figure out what songs could be played at the next show.

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros featuring the Wolf Pack at Pier Six Pavilion

This year was no exception, as Bobby Weir, founding member and rhythm guitarist of the Dead, took the stage with his Wolf Bros and the Wolf Pack to close out the summer concert season with a sold-out show at Baltimore's Pier Six Pavilion on September 28, 2023. Bob Weir's guitar work is just as unique and rare as the band's music. While most rhythm guitarists occupy a quiet niche in bands, playing simple chord progressions to guide the singers and lead guitarist through the music, Bob has created his own playing style that few can emulate. His distinctive strumming is reminiscent of the left hand of an expert jazz pianist banging out chords during an intense saxophone solo instead of a rock n' roll band playing in an arena. Bob's particular style serves as the dynamic canvas on which the Grateful Dead's improvisational music is painted and functions as the perfect counterpoint for incredible solos by all of his band members. Composed of Don Was on upright bass, Jay Lane on drums, and Jeff Chimenti on keys, as well as a string and brass quintet known as the Wolf Pack, featuring Alex Kelly (cello), Brian Switzer (trumpet), Adam Theis (trombone), Mads Tolling (violin), and Sheldon Brown (tenor and alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute and bass flute), along with Barry Sless on pedal steel, Bobby's Wolf Bros and the Wolf Pack provide a rich sonic landscape to explore the Dead's extensive catalog.

Walking up to the venue through Shakedown Street–Deadhead's slang for the tailgate party in the parking lot before shows and a reference to one of the band’s most famous songs–it was clear it would be a memorable evening for those in attendance. The parking lot vibrated with fans' energy as they danced around in tie-dye, and vendors sold their homemade posters, stickers, and glass art. As the band started playing the first notes of "The Music Never Stopped," clumps of Deadheads gathered on the lawn and in the aisles began dancing–twirling and spinning in a distinctive hippie waltz that would not end until the final notes rang out. The opening song seamlessly segued into "Easy Answers" and back into "The Music Never Stopped." The first set continued with a cover of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" and "Me & My Uncle" that featured extensive soloing from Sless on pedal steel guitar that turned the tune into a country ballad, demonstrating the band's ability to seamlessly infuse country western and big band sounds into the Dead's music.

Next, the band launched into a somber and slow version of "Even So," a staple of Bob Weir's solo shows. Alluding to the song's reference to "the wolfman at the door" and the band's name, Weir let out several long howls as the full moon hid behind the clouds hanging over Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Seamlessly transitioning again, the band continued with another Weir original, "October Queen" without taking a break. Bobby & Wolf Bros closed out the first set with the upbeat shuffle "Deal," which featured an exquisitely phrased pedal steel guitar solo.

During the break, concertgoers were treated to a fireworks show launched from Camden Yards, celebrating the Baltimore Orioles winning the American League East Championship–a monumental moment for Orioles fans. This brief but incredible display drew cheers from the crowd for several minutes as they celebrated one of their favorite artists and the success of the local MLB team.

Bobby & Wolf Bros opened the second set with a vivacious violin solo during "The Winners," and the second set continued with a series of classic Grateful Dead songs, beginning with "Estimated Prophet," which featured incredible horn solos from the Wolf Pack, and then they transitioned into "New Speedway Boogie" and then to the classic segue of "China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider." The string and brass quintet provided potent punches of jazzy big band energy–expanding the potential for exploration in the Dead's music. The band continued with an incredible version of "The Wheel," which one fan claimed felt like a summer vacation with its reggae-inspired jam led by Jeff Chimenti's keyboard solo and the string and brass quintet's melodic riffs.

In contrast to the upbeat feel of the previous songs, Bobby mellowed the crowd with a poignant version of "Standing on the Moon," an incredible ballad written by the Dead's late Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. Then, the band closed out the concert with the entire "Terrapin Station Suite," a rare treat for Dead fans, as the band typically only played the first portion of the Suite. The string and brass quintet added a vibrant texture to the song's highly composed sections, intensifying the peak of one of the Dead's most epic songs, and Alex Kelly and Mads Tolling battled with dueling cello and violin solos.

As the final notes of the "Terrapin Station Suite" resonated through the air and the crowd erupted in applause, it became abundantly clear that this Wolf Bros concert was another chapter in the book detailing the enduring magic of the Grateful Dead's music and its ability to unite generations of fans. The rich tapestry of sounds, the seamless transitions between songs, the exceptional musicianship of Bobby & Wolf Bros, and the added brilliance of the Wolf Pack all combined to create a night that will forever be in the memories of those in attendance.

Hozier performs at The Anthem on September 26, 2023

Nurturing the Soul: A Night with Hozier

I've seen Hozier a couple of times now, and each time its own spiritual experience. Not to be dramatic or overstate his power, but the music of Hozier somehow reappears just when you need it the most. A break-up, a death in the family, or a new love — Hozier's music wraps itself around your soul, providing solace in moments of vulnerability.

To be quite frank, I didn't "study" for his concert at The Anthem on September 26th as I normally do. I didn't know that Hozier did a pop-up show at Lincoln Theater earlier this year. Nor did I know that his first DC show sold out in four minutes and eight seconds, and the second night in eight minutes. I had only listened to his latest album, Unreal Unearth just once all the way through. And yet, the second he began his set, walking out to deafening cheers, I settled quickly into the warm nostalgia that is Hozier, transported back to my house sophomore year of college, laying in bed listening to "Cherry Wine" on a brand new record player.

Hozier Cries Power at Sold-Out Anthem Show
On November 18, The Anthem in Washington, DC played host to one of the most highly regarded acts in popular[...]

Backed by an eight-piece band, Hozier launched into his two-hour set, with the setlist evenly divided between his three albums, playing favorites from all, including "Abstract (Psychopomp)", which had never been played live before. Starting off slow, before gradually increasing in tempo and spirit, "De Selby I" and "De Selby II" kicked off the night.

Hozier performs at The Anthem on September 26, 2023

The stage came to life with visuals that seamlessly mixed live footage with images from his album covers and music videos, taking us on a visual journey of Hozier's musical career. It appeared to shift through the seasons, the passing of time. At one point, trees grew from above, casting warm shadows across the stage, and the audience responded in sync with the warmth emanating from the screen.

Hozier performs at The Anthem on September 26, 2023

As Hozier launched into "Dinner and Diatribes," the atmosphere crackled with electricity and fervor, as the drums came alive with a feral energy I'd yet to hear at a Hozier concert. Those early days of cozy living room-like shows had been replaced; Hozier has fully embraced his rockstar persona.

Hozier performs at The Anthem on September 26, 2023

And yet, his humility has remained a constant throughout his career. Maintaining a warm and casual rapport with fans, Hozier addressed the crowd more than once with graciousness and humor. "It's good I don't get used to this job," he mused, "but I certainly don't get a welcome like walking out on stage every night. You've been so kind." The connection with the audience was palpable; he addressed the crowd like old friends, even joking before the falsetto intro of "To Be Alone", "Usually I roast the shit out of the audience for that, but with you I didn't need to. That's the best I've heard!"

While "Take Me to Church" may forever be Hozier's defining anthem, its power remains undiminished. The impassioned vocals, the fervor of the audience, and the palpable anticipation leading to its climax created an electrifying atmosphere. To conclude the main set, Hozier draped a transgender flag on his microphone stand, which elicited a thunderous applause before he exited the stage, setting the scene for the encore.

Although the band took a solid few minutes to regroup backstage, the applause never once wavered.

Opener Maddison Cunningham returned to the stage, joining Hozier and the band for the final encore performance of "Work Song." Earlier hailed by Hozier as one of the "greatest and unique minds of [his] generation," Cunningham added her crisp and bewitching vibes to bring the spiritually charged performance to a soulful conclusion.

Hozier performs at The Anthem on September 26, 2023

Before ending the night, Hozier made sure to dedicate a large chunk of time to thoroughly thanking everyone on tour with them by name. It was a genuine gesture that underscored his profound appreciation for the tireless effort that goes behind the scenes every night of tour. As the night concluded, a rolling credit reel displayed the names of all fifty-two members of the tour, offering a well-deserved acknowledgement of their hard work.

Although the days of intimate Hozier shows are long gone, he still knows how to connect with and create an experience for his fans. His humility and unmatched talent make for an unparalleled musical experience.

Ben Folds performs at The Kennedy Center
Concert Reviews

What Matters Most – Ben Folds Performs At The Kennedy Center

On Thursday, September 21st, the Kennedy Center glistened brightly on a crisp fall evening with an intricate and beautiful intersection of the American Arts - Hispanic-infused bluegrass at the Millenium stage, production of Moulin Rouge in the Opera House, and a sold-out Ben Folds performing at the Concert Hall.

Ben Folds is no stranger to the Washington DC Metro area and has been performing in Washington DC for almost as long as he has been touring, having first performed at the 9:30 Club in September 1995 with Ben Folds Five. Since then, he has performed at many of DC's iconic music halls and events, including  HFSival, Wolf Trap, DAR Constitution Hall, Merriweather Post Pavilion, and The Kennedy Center. His latest performance at The Kennedy Center would mark his twelfth appearance at this artistic mecca. Folds loves The Kennedy Center so much that for the last five years, he has been the National Symphony Orchestra's Artistic Advisor.  Folds would later talk about the honor of actually performing at The Kennedy Center again since so much of his interaction has been as advisor and not performer for this prestigious institution.

Ben Folds has always rocked the suburbs, but tonight, he would rock deep in the heart of Washington, DC, much to everyone's delight. Folds is one of the preeminent indie music performers of his generation and has been performing since the late 1990s, drawing in a wide range of music lovers - from indie rockers to fans of his virtuosic piano performance. As the audience walked into the concert hall, fans, young and old, took their seats, spotting the heartwarming sight of a young girl in a rainbow lace dress walking in beside her father, gently holding hands as they walked to their seats.

Before the main act, the audience was treated and transfixed by the performance of Lindsey Kraft. Within the first few moments of her first piece, concertgoers realized how perfect the pairing was. A burgeoning newcomer to musical performances, Kraft, in addition to her brilliant piano playing and songs, masterfully interacted with and entertained the audience with her witty and sincere songs. Kraft evoked Regina Spector influences with the delivery of Kate Micucci of Garfunkel and Oates.   Throughout her performance, Kraft shared many stories and anecdotes, including stories of meeting her idol, otherwise known as 'guitar hero,' how she secretly loved high school chorus, her longtime and childhood friend Jamie-Lynn Sigler of HBO Series The Sopranos fame, and the newfound and fantasy-driven relationship with audience member Alan. Kraft talked passionately about her upcoming play “love, me” which she is working on, and based on her performances supporting Ben Folds on his current tour, thousands of new fans are looking forward to her upcoming musical.

During the intermission, the main chatter in the theatre was Folds' recent Instagram post asking for song requests. Conversation and debates sifted about the theater as fans wondered what songs they would hear from Folds's massive catalog. One couple lovingly talked about how they hoped Folds would perform their wedding song - "The Luckiest." On previous appearances at The Kennedy Center, Ben Folds shared the stage with the National Symphony Orchestra, but tonight, all eyes would be on Folds and his singular grand piano at the center of the stage.

Ben Folds

When Folds did take the stage, he was met with a rousing standing ovation by his adoring fans and he quickly settled into his performance by introducing the audience to the song "Exhausting Lover" off of his latest album What Matters Most as he segued into a fan favorite "Annie Waits." Folds is well known for his intimate interaction with audience members, and tonight would be no different. Folds would spend the next hour and a half captivating the audience with his piano playing, storytelling, sing-alongs, and leading fan participation. After performing "So There," Folds turned to the audience and began a long and casual conversation with approximately 2,500 of his friends. This was one of many such occasions that he would turn from the piano and turn to the audience and share stories, both real and imagined. Before performing "Kristine from the 7th Grade", Folds described conversing with a woman named Chris with a K and how if he bad-mouthed her, she would meet him in a dark room and "kick his ass with her shoes on."

Ben Folds
Ben Folds

Throughout the evening, Ben Folds would change the feel in the room, alternating from gentle and tender songs to thunderous and ferociously played pieces to an audience that gleamed with every note and anecdote. Folds possesses the technical prowess to flawlessly execute each song as it was recorded; however, without any backing musicians, he chose to deliberately diverge from any written sheet music and instead channel his emotions and release them with every strike of the piano keys. When Folds channeled all of his energy into the keys, the concert hall resonated with passionate, complex, and thunderous music - much to the audience's delight. As much as the mood of the music changed, so did the beautifully lit backdrop.  Throughout the evening the organ pipes behind him were beautifully lit up with colorful and varying hues, adding to the grandeur of the performance.

Ben Folds

Midway through the concert, Ben Folds made good on his Instagram request as he took out a list of accumulated song requests. For most of the remainder of the performance, Folds would perform preplanned songs interspersed with audience requests. As requested songs started to play, audience members let out cheers of joy and appreciation. Stories continued to flow as Folds noted "Still" became popular because Billie Eilish had covered it earlier this year and acknowledged before playing 1999 fan favorite, "Narcolepsy" - "Jesus, let's see if I can remember this song."

Ben Folds

The hall would then resonate with passion as Ben Folds performed "All U Can Eat," which originated with a conversation between Ben and his father. Perhaps the biggest applause thus far came when the opening notes of "Landed" rang out, and then the audience quietly sat in their seats, taking in the beauty of this powerfully bittersweet song. One might have thought this was a Christmas Eve performance as you could have heard a pin drop touch down - "Landed" aside.

Ben Folds
Ben Folds

Perhaps the most poignant and personal story that Folds would share this evening was about the song "What Matters Most." He talked about during the pandemic how he went to a storage facility containing all of his worldly possessions, how he felt it was irresponsible to take up seven storage lockers just to store "stuff," and how he really needed to reflect on what matters the most to him. While writing this song and album, he received word that one of his best friends, whom he would generally text almost daily, had passed away, and how his passing further crystallized what mattered most in life. Ever the entertainer, Folds would end the story by telling the audience that he "put it a major key so it would be so f*cking sad."

Ben Folds

The final half an hour of Folds' performance was certain to be cherished by the audience. As Folds began "Kate," he invited the audience to responsively sing along. What started out as a single responsive song became a 2500-person sing-along as the theatre echoed Folds's commanding performance and the audience's gleeful responsive lyrics and clapping during "You Don't Know Me" and finally "Zak and Sara."

Ben Folds

As the main performance ended with "Zak and Sara," Folds took a bow and left the stage before returning to thunderous applause from the audience. Folds performed "Not The Same" and left the piano towards the song's end to conduct the audience's angelic chorus. Just when we thought the evening's performance was over, Folds dedicated his last song to a young couple he met outside Roxy and Harper - "The luckiest." Another couple, the one we had spoken to earlier in the evening, could be seen gleaning ear to ear while lovingly looking at one another and recalling their wedding dance. One could not have hoped for a better way to end an incredible performance by Ben Folds.

Ben Folds

We look forward to the next time he performs at the majestic Kennedy Center and are truly grateful that Folds makes this institution a home away from home.
