Spafford Set To Perform At The Atlantis On September 19th

Attention Spaffnerds - with great excitement, Spafford recently announced that they will perform at The Atlantis on Thursday, September 19th.

Spafford is no stranger to our region, but aside from performing at The 9:30 Club on January 21st, 2023, they have toured around the perimeter of Washington, DC, for the past few years—choosing to delight and gain new fans at The Broadberry in Richmond, Virginia, the Tally Ho Theater in Leesburg, Virginia, and the Baltimore Soundstage in Baltimore, Maryland.

Spafford now sets their sights on The Atlantis, right beside the 9:30 Club, where in 2019 they debuted "Dirt Bath" with a colossal 23-minute masterpiece.

As well as a comprehensive catalog of original songs, the band has snuck in some incredible covers into their concerts over the years.

Spafford is well known for their astonishing improvisational ability and off-the-cuff extended jam. This jam band stalwart consists of Brian Moss (guitar/vocals), Jordan "j0rby" Fairless (bass/vocals), Nick Tkachyk(drums/percussion/vocals), and Cory Schechtman (keys/sax/vocals).

The Spafford sound is a delicious blend of multiple musical genres, including rock, jazz, ska, funk, electro-pop, and reggae. At each performance, Spafford paints a picture in real-time each night with a musical palette known only to each other. Spafford is amongst the most creative and hard-traveling bands on the contemporary jam scene, performing countless sold-out headline dates and celebrated festival performances.

Count us "All In" for Spafford when they perform at The Atlantis on September 21st, 2024.

The Atlantis opened its doors on May 30th, 2023, to exceptional fanfare and excitement. Its history began as a bookend to an announcement made almost two years earlier—with The Foo Fighters performing on opening night.

When The Foo Fighters performed at the 9:30 Club's re-opening on September 9th, 2021, Washington DC's favorite son, Dave Grohl, announced that a replica of the old 9:30 Club would be built next door.

Fast-forward back to 2023 when the mythical Foo Fighters performance at The Atlantis kicked off a legendary run of 44 performances, which included some of the biggest names in music. For the 20,000 tickets available for these shows, a staggering 520,000 tickets were requested in a public lottery.

Floor

The floor at The Atlantis is meant to bounce and have some give.  This prevents noise from traveling to the neighboring 9:30 Club and is completely normal.

Sound

The venue boasts an exceptional sound system and because the venue is so small - the sound is plentiful.

Note: The evening's performance music is played on outdoor speakers on the rooftop deck.

Lighting

The venue lighting is brand new and state of the art.  However, true to the 1980's-1990's vibe of the venue, the lights are stationary with a few front-flood lights.

Annapolis Baygrass Festival 2024 & Its All-Star Lineup Is Coming Setpember 21 & 22, 2024

The greater Washington DC / Baltimore Metro Area music scene thrives and has fully recovered from the pandemic years.  Proof of our thriving music scene has been the emergence of new music festivals taking root throughout the region. One of the latest festivals to appear on the DMV's music calendar is the Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival.  The inaugural edition was canceled at the last minute by a hurricane. However, last year's edition washed ashore into the region like a thunderous storm of music and celebration.  This year's edition is shaping up to be a Category 5 festival of epic proportions.

The Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival will take at the gorgeous eastern beach at Sandy Point State Park along the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis, Maryland, on September 21st and 222nd, 2024.

Over a beautiful fall weekend, fans will get to enjoy music from Oteil & Friends (Oteil Burbridge w/ Melvin Seals, Steve Kimock, Jason Crosby, Johnny Kimock, Tom Guarna, Lamar Williams Jr.), The Infamous Stringdusters, Leftover Salmon, Sam Bush, Kitchen Dwellers, Sierra Hull, Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country, Cris Jacobs & Friends, Trouble No More, The Lil Smokies, The Dirty Grass Players, Big Richards, Brown Eyed Woman, and Geraldine.  In addition to a stupendous lineup, there will be three artists at large this weekend, creating a world-class brass ensemble to the lineup featuring Jennifer Harstwick (trumpet & vocals), Natalie Cressman (trombone & vocals), and local legend Ron Holloway (saxophone).

Annapolis Baygras 2024 Lineup

While listening to some of the best local and national bluegrass music, fans can dance in the sand, enjoy fresh oysters and Maryland seafood, chase it down with local craft brews and wines, and enjoy fun activities for all ages. Festival goers will enjoy two days of exciting activities, which include yoga, beach and yard games, a fun kid zone, and interactive workshops with bay conservation non-profits and musicians.

"The Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival was born out of our team’s love of progressive bluegrass music, the desire to generate a fun community-oriented vibe, and a passion for protecting the Chesapeake Bay. The Baygrass philosophy is to help people learn about conservation, sustainability, and mental health—in a way that combines education with fun. 'Every Jam Helps a Mind' and 'Every Jam Saves the Bay,' as we like to say!"

//  CEO Ron Peremel  Annapolis Baygrass Festival CEO & Co-Founder

Highlighting the finest in regional and national bluegrass, jamgrass, funkgrass, and Americana music, this conservation and community-focused musical event was listed as a “Don’t-Miss Bay Music Festival'' by Chesapeake Bay Magazine. A family-friendly festival, Annapolis Baygrass draws people from all over the country and the region to enjoy the unique beachfront destination.

Part of all proceeds from ticket, food, beverage, and merchandise sales will go to Maryland-based non-profit organizations that work tirelessly to protect the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. So, just by having fun, you're helping the Bay. Baygrass has embraced the motto of "Every Jam Saves the Bay." With each jam along Sandy Point State Park, we will help our beloved Chesapeake Bay.

This year, Baygrass features an elevated culinary experience, including Maryland crab cakes, roasted and raw oysters, gourmet BBQ, wood-fired pizzas, and other delicious vegan and vegetarian delicacies. Tasty beverage selections include microbrews, craft cocktails and wines, mocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages. Yoga, music and educational workshops, beach and yard games, kids activities, local craft vendors, and more will all be available at the festival.

“The Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival was born out of our team’s love of progressive bluegrass music, the desire to generate a fun community-oriented vibe, and a passion for protecting the Chesapeake Bay,” says festival co-founder and CEO Ron Peremel. “The Baygrass philosophy is to help people learn about conservation, sustainability, and mental health—in a way that combines education with fun. ’Every Jam Helps a Mind’ and ‘Every Jam Saves the Bay,’ as we like to say!”

More than a music festival, Annapolis Baygrass maintains its mission to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. As part of this mission, a portion of all proceeds from tickets, food, beverage, and merchandise sales will go to Maryland-based non-profit organizations, including Watershed Stewards Academy, Oyster Recovery Partnership, and Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay.

Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival was founded in 2022 by Ron Peremel, John Way, and Ron Katz, who share a passion for music, a love of the local region, and a desire to give back to the community by creating a music festival with a purpose. They brought in industry veterans to join the team as well.  Baygrass’ environmental ethos is evidenced in its adoption of the sustainability model, making it one of the only green festivals in Maryland. Actions to reduce the festival's environmental footprint include using local food vendors and ingredients, compostable plates and utensils, reusable metal cups, refillable water stations, and a “no single-use plastic water bottles” policy.

By celebrating the local region, giving back to the community, and curating a fantastic lineup of musicians, Annapolis Baygrass Music Festival aims to be a pillar in the local and national music scenes and an annual music festival tradition for years to come!

In addition to the ticket option below, you can learn more about VIP, Camping and Lodging, and Transportation/Shuttles/Rideshare options.

We look forward to dancing with delight at Sandy Point State Park with you as we enjoy some of the finest in regional and national bluegrass and Americana and embrace what looks to be a permanent fixture in our local music scene.

Trousdale performs at The Atlantis

Sold Out and Proud: Talented Trio Trousdale Takes Over The Atlantis

College friends turned bandmates turned feminist icons performed last week at The Atlantis to a sold-out crowd of ravenous fans yearning for any interaction with the blossoming band. The trio performed the 18-song set with steady enthusiasm and humility while the crowd eagerly exchanged energy with them, resulting in a palpable joy for the hour-and-a-half show.

John-Robert

Virginia native John-Robert opened for the band on Tuesday, and as Trousdale would say, “If I’m honest,” I thought John-Robert was coming from the West Coast, specifically Portland, Oregon. His untamed hair, wide-leg pants, and authentic and spunky personality would have fooled anyone. For instance, on his Spotify “About” page, he dedicates his music to the company that makes Swedish Fish, using an opportunity to introduce himself to new listeners by showing instead of telling them about who he is–that’s sooooo Portland. Okay, moving on from my hubris of presuming my prejudgments of a person’s hometown, John-Robert is seriously one to watch.

John-Robert

As he spoke to the crowd, he described his music as sad, but he delivered the news with a beaming smile that it made me look forward to being sad with him. As his longtime and budding fans in the audience watched his performance with curiosity and excitement, he remarked that “the energy in here is too positive” and “you’re having too good of a time.” His solution was to play more sad songs at which point an uproarious laughter erupted from below the stage.

In addition to his natural stage presence which he effortlessly manipulated like his vocal range and precision picking, his music is creating its own genre to live within. I would hate to be the one responsible for creating new sounds after thousands of years of music, but John-Robert takes on that task with glee and dedicated craftsmanship. Even between his songs like “WAISTBIN,” “Good Days’ll Come,” and “Road Trip,” he resembles artists like R&B crooner Daniel Caesar, folk favorite Jack Johnson, and indie icon Mac DeMarco, respectively.

In a first for me (and probably most concertgoers), he introduced his song “Sweet Child” by asking the audience if they wanted to be silly and requested they help with the chorus, which consisted of primal grunts and deep sighs. John-Robert has tapped into the aching catharsis that is music and helps us find relief and inspiration from our depleting and often dry daily lives.

Trousdale

Like a swelling balloon with a POP on the other side of the last breath, the anticipation for Trousdale was growing as space to move within the dark venue was shrinking. Imagine a girl band with Cher, Dolly, and Stevie Nicks, now call them Trousdale. Bringing Josie and the Pussycat vibes to 2024, I’m so happy that they are bringing girl bands back with the Powerpuff Girl aesthetic to boot. Serendipitously scheduled for Pride month in DC, a diverse group of fans including the LGBTQIA community, allies, and music lovers filled the Atlantis. Comprised of Lauren Jones, Georgia Greene, and Quinn D’Andrea, Trousdale is blazing a trail in the music industry for female artists to thrive. With an emphasis on producing their own music, a role that many young women get passed over for in the industry, they know what they want and are headed there at 100 miles an hour.

Trousdale

Like any craft, witnessing the execution elevates how you engage with the content, so it’s no surprise that watching the young women harmonize and stretch their vocal ranges in real time was its own experience. Masterfully singing with, instead of over, each other was like watching a chef fluidly wield their blade or a pair of tanned, callused hands whittle cedar from a rocking chair. There was a magic and ease to how three became one. In a similar vein, their limited-edition tri-colored vinyl of Out of My Mind is emblematic of their individual unity.

Their vocal blend is only a portion of why this LA-based band is catching fire faster than Cal-Fire could ever hope to extinguish it. Their debut LP sounds like a mature iteration of decades of honing and experimenting, yet they are a band of 25-year-olds making music together for six years. A mix between raw talent and sincere compassion for their fans, Trousdale is one of those bands bringing purpose back to music. They are open and honest about not only their struggles as young adults, and women, in today’s world, especially the music industry. They don’t just play music, they live it. For example, their track from 2023 debut LP Out of My Mind, “If You’re Hurting,” was co-written by Jones, who recently grappled with depression, and she told the audience how she thought she would never be happy again - a feeling we have surely all felt at one time or another and perhaps likely more than just once. Appreciated and felt deeply by the audience, the song was illuminated further by the glow of the cell phone lights. They make music for their fans spanning the full spectrum of human emotions, including pausing and taking a breath with their 2021 single “This Is It” during which they immediately instruct listeners, “Right now in the crowd/Take a second, feel your breathing/Put those shoulders down.” Trousdale doesn’t only have a finger on the pulse of the issues of today, they are the heartbeat of a generation.

Trousdale

Succeeding in elevating people’s spirits, fans and friends were dancing in circles as wide as their smiles. If you’ve been blue, go to a Trousdale show. You’ll leave as bright as the light they bring to every performance. Even off stage, they bring a youthful excitement and hopefulness to their lives (I know this because I got lost watching their Instagram stories, which is even more of a feat since I don’t even have an IG.) Trousdale are like sprinkles: from their brightly colored outfits to the sheer joy just saying their name brings to your face knowing what you’re in store for.

Festival on Fire: The Roots and Dispatch Bring the Heat to Reggae Rise Up Maryland

From June 21-23 Reggae Rise Up turned the Baltimore Peninsula into a Ska Sanctuary. Showcasing nationally touring local acts such as Ballyhoo, The Harbor Boys, Dale and the ZDubs, and Higher Education, the festival highlighted the vibrant reggae scene present in the DMV. Even in the heat, opening acts delivered incredible energy, sparking excitement in the growing crowd.

Dispatch

It's to be noted that Reggae Rise Up Maryland went to great lengths to prioritize the well-being of attendees.  Amid global concerns on the safety of music festivals, many music lovers have refrained from partaking in summer festivals . To combat the record-high temperatures and minimal cloud cover, the festival provided plenty of shaded tents. In addition to a variety of food and non-alcoholic drink vendors, security staff generously distributed water bottles to help prevent dehydration among fans who didn't want to lose their spot on the rail or wait in long lines.

The Roots

Wristbands allowed festival-goers the flexibility to leave and re-enter once a day, giving them an opportunity to escape the heat thus enhancing their RRU experience. After a weekend filled with sun and smiles, the three-day event concluded with an electrifying finale, leaving concert-goers energized.

The Roots

Dispatch, with their unique blend of indie-rock and reggae, indulged fans in well-known classics as well as current hits. Their performance appealed to all with their eclectic yet accessible sound. Original members Chadwick Stokes and Brad CAs the sun sank over the Patapsco, the band members jumped off risers and head-banged amidst the smoky stage. Kids cheered on shoulders high in the air, and one was even seen joyfully catapulted as vibrant lasers scanned the crowd.

Dispatch

Finally, The Roots burst onto the stage for the festival finale. With unmatched energy, the band dove into their mix of hip-hop, jazz, and soul which delighted the eager audience. MC Black Thought commanded the stage, energetically hitting every corner while the equally captivating guitarist and vocalist "Captain" Kirk Douglas energetically mirrored.  Backed by a tight rhythm section, punchy horns, and layered with keys and turntable beats, The Roots effortlessly mixed unconventional sounds. Highlights included key tar and drum solos by Jeremy Ellis and the iconic Questlove, who brought the crowd to an infinite roar. The Roots gave a performance like none other, solidifying their worldwide "legendary" status.

The Roots

If you missed Reggae Rise Up Maryland 2024, you can catch their Florida, Utah, and Las Vegas editions!  It's not too late to get tickets for Reggae Rise Up Vegas taking place on October 4-6, 2024.

Trey Anasstasio and The National Sympony Orchestra Vibrate With Love And Light At Wolf Trap

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra performed together on a picturesque evening at the Filene Center Wolf Trap on June 25th, 2024.  Perhaps the only thing as beautiful as the venue's lush green lawn nestled in a national park was the intricate, resounding, and uplifting music by Trey Anastasio and nearly all of the NSO's ninety-six musicians.

The evening would be a confluence of genres as Trey Anastasio, the magnetic frontman of Phish, would draw from over two decades of performing alongside classical musicians and orchestras to reimagine classic Phish songs and transform them into compositions that no one would have imagined or thought possible.

Nothing like a Trey Anastasio infectious smile and giggle.

Anastasio is no stranger to working with orchestras, and as we look back down the number line, we see the twenty-plus years of Anastasio's virtuosic orchestral performances dating back to his 2000 collaboration with Troy Peters, director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra, and subsequent appearances at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic until a full-on symphonic tour in 2012 where he shared the stages with orchestras in Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. Anastasio's symphony appearances throughout his career have been rare and speckled through his many performances - however, each has been highly cherished, usually sold out, and treasured by everyone in attendance.

Nothing like a Trey Anastasio infectious smile and giggle.

This special Wolf Trap appearance was not the first time Anastasio performed alongside Washington's world-renowned National Symphony Orchestra. More than a decade earlier, Anastasio performed alongside the NSO in May of 2013 at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra conductor Edwin Outwater

Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra conductor Edwin Outwater

At this Wolf Trap performance, The National Symphony Orchestra was nothing short of magical under the direction of conductor Edwin Outwater. For two hours, the Outwater and the NSO would reimagine and transform Phish songs into masterful orchestral arrangements that would echo deep into the woods of Vienna, Virginia, as Harry Hood found himself drawn into the musical canvas and palate of John Williams.  The audience was symphonically transported to the Land of Nod somewhere over the rainbow, and their troubles melted away like lemon drops as The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday walked beside Indiana Jones.

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra conductor Edwin Outwater

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra conductor Edwin Outwater

One did not have to be a Phish or Anastasio fan to enjoy the evening's performance, as each song was reimagined to stand on its own as an orchestral masterpiece. Of course, having a beaming Trey Anastasio on stage alongside the NSO made for a truly unforgettable evening at Wolf Trap. After the performance, we would talk with classic music fans who had no prior Trey Anastasio knowledge but expressed their delight at the evening's performance.

Nothing like a summer concert at Wolf Trap

At 8PM the NSO would take their places and filled the full breadth of Wolf Trap's enormous stage.  Soon after, Anastasio took to the stage as the audience erupted into applause and a standing ovation.  Wasting no time, the first recognizable "First Tube" notes filled the night's crisp air. This distinctive guitar-driven instrumental song allowed the symphony to fill the stage with a driving rhythm until erupting into a crescendo of symphonic sound.

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra

With a quick smile and acknowledgment of the audience, Anastasio switched to his acoustic guitar to perform a delicate "Water In The Sky." As Anastasio delicately delivered this poignant song, singing its introspective lyrics, the NSO added a lush and grandiose dimension to this moving song with delicate layers of brass, percussion, strings, and woodwinds.

The evening would include three orchestral debuts, including the title track "Evolve" from Phish's forthcoming album. "Evolve" was introduced in 2020 as part of Anastasio's pandemic Beacon Theatre performances.  This powerful song filled the stage with added dimensions to the orchestra as you could feel the energy and "lungs" of the orchestra fully open and expand upon the stage.  This new song allowed longtime orchestral collaborator Don Hart the opportunity to arrange a new song and, as we would see later on, to rearrange some of his previous compositions.

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra

Next, one of the most beloved and cherished Phish songs, "Divided Sky," would appear on stage. The NSO delicately orchestrates a dramatic backdrop for Anastasio's guitar playing that enhanced the song's intricate introduction, resoundingly delivering him to the song's eagerly anticipated pause.  After an extended pause, Anastasio delivered a series of tender and staccato re-introductions to the song along the backdrop of the symphony. The fusion of guitar-driven music and symphonic energy provided a musical backdrop that made the audience swoon and erupt in sounds of exuberance. One would almost hear Anastasio play against a backdrop of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" or a sweeping Indiana Jones title theme. In one magical moment, the lone voice of a first-chair violin rose from the orchestra as the sweeping orchestral tapestry briefly parted to make way for this lone voice, which then closed once again to fill the venue with sparkle and delight. Acknowledging the power of this song, Anastasio introduced the conductor to the audience as the orchestra rose to salute the crowd, and the audience gave them a much-deserved standing ovation.

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra

The second debut of the evening was "Mercy" from Anastasio's 2022 solo acoustic album. Already poignant and tender, the song shined in contrast to the resilient orchestral backdrop.

Concluding the first set was another beloved Phish staple, "Stash." This song is always enjoyed and rife with audience participation and energy. In any orchestral performance, juxtaposing an entire symphony and spirited audience participation always makes this song memorable.

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra conductor Edwin Outwater

After an unexpected but brief intermission, Anastasio and the NSO returned for the third symphonic premiere of the night - the ever-beloved Phish classic "Harry Hood." While many can feel good, good about Hood, this evening, the audience proved to be truly ecstatic about Mr. Miner and Harry Hood. The new arrangement dramatically enriched the song with a complex intertwining of instruments. The orchestral arrangement elevated the piece, as one section after another of the orchestra surged like a tsunami crashing ashore with sonic delight. The resounding and soaring orchestral pieces uplifted the song to its final conclusion, where fans erupted in joyful and unified, "You can feel good, good about Hood." The audience's euphoria was palpable as glow stick wars memories of performances past danced in concert-goers' heads with the delight of sugarplum fairies.

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra conductor Edwin Outwater

After a huge standing ovation, Anastasio and the NSO embarked on Anastasio's greatest symphonic opus, "Petrichor." In its original form, Anastasio intended the song to be a classically inspired, long-form composition. This song always lends itself to an orchestral appearance by Anastasio as he performs an electric guitar concerto as a wave after wave of orchestral pieces washed over the audience. Witnessing a Petrichor live with an accompanying orchestra is unequaled life except for the memorable 2016 New Year's Eve performance.

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra

Piggybacking on the waves of joy, Anastasio performed the ever-inspirational and upbeat "More." With such a beautiful and inspiring song sung with an orchestral backdrop, the audience once again radiated with joy as more emotional glowsticks resonated at Wolf Trap.   In a world where "Phan's plan and Trey smiles as he throws you a curveball," Anastasio changed the atmosphere of the performance with the gravitas of "What's The Use?" In an instant, the scores of musicians tugged at our heartstrings, bringing profound emotions that only this song and its rich orchestration can evoke.

The second set would end with the illustrious and ever-powerful "You Enjoy Myself," a cornerstone of Phish's live performances for decades. The song is a multi-faceted, exhilarating song with several distinct sections - each with its own intricacies and personalities. The symphony and Anastasio would spend most of the next nineteen minutes punctuating each section of the masterpiece with their own unique emotion and personality. Laughter would erupt after a traditional crescendo of "Boy, Man, God, Shit" was not delivered in the scheduled time but instead replaced with a delayed trombone evoking the words. Anastasio would continue with a musical dialogue between himself and the symphony, much akin to his call-and-response interplay with Page McConnel or Mike Gordan at a Phish performance. Right before the end of Y.E.M., Anastasio would put down his guitar and improvise a solo vocal arrangement with the orchestra in tow.

Trey Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra

After an impressive second set, Anastasio left the stage and returned a few minutes later for a perfect encore consisting of "The Inlaw Josie Wales" and "The Lizards."  The evening ended with a joyful dance through the gates of Gamehenge as the now seldom-performed 'Lizards' made its appearance.  Standing, dancing, and joyously celebrating an evening as the audience rose to dance throughout the venue. '.  Josie Wales, the audience erupted into jubilation for the evening's eternal joy and never-ending splendor.

One of the many "Trey Faces" appearing for this performance

It cannot be understated how massive the National Symphony Orchestra's undertaking was to learn and perfectly deliver the arrangements performed this evening.  Moreso, performing ten-minute-plus songs such as "Divided Sky","Harry Hood," "Petrichor," and "You Enjoy Myself" in a single evening, let alone in two hours. For this reason and many more, Anastasio took several opportunities throughout the evening to introduce and thank both Outwater and the National Symphony Orchestra. While Anastasio's symphony performances are rarely released, many would agree that for "Divided Sky", "Harry Hood", and "What's The Use" alone, this evening's performance would be a cherished release.   This was a night of celebration of both the music of Anastasio and the National Symphony Orchestra and a pairing we hope is not another eleven years in the making.

In the meantime, if you are a fan of The National Symphony Orchestra, join them when they celebrate David Bowie with "BLACKSTAR Symphony: The Music of David Bowie" on Friday, June 28th, and Saturday, June 29th,  and once again with Beck on Saturday, July 27th.

Six Foot Blonde Set To Perform At Pearl Street Warehouse On July 12th

Six Foot Blonde, an indie-pop group from Bloomington, Indiana, is heading to Washington, DC, on July 12th when they perform at Pearl Street Warehouse.

Originally a local college band, the group transformed into a national touring act within a year and a half. The group fuses pop melodies and rhythms with soul-inspired vocals and slide guitar, drawing inspiration from a broad palette of artists. Their tight-knit, energetic friendship on stage makes for a danceable, memorable experience for each audience member. Live shows are where they shine and they have quickly becoming a midwestern staple in the independent music space.  The bands music fuses pop melodies and rhythms with soul-inspired vocals and slide guitar, drawing inspiration from a broad palette of artists like Florence and the Machine, Fleetwood Mac, and Olivia Dean.

So where did they get this memorable name?  Vocalist Julia Rusyniak explains,  “We used to sing with another girl (Emma Spartz) that was 6-foot-2 and both of us at the time had blonde hair.”  The band turning heads for a different reason - their incredible sound and energy.

Now headlining their first national tour, this band of college students is hitting the road and prepared to enthrall new audience members.

We are looking forward to seeing this band take up the full breadth of Pearl Street Warehouse's stage when this sextuplet performs.  This band is composed of Julia Rusyniak (Lead vocals), John Alex Rusyniak (Keys), Dom Heyob (Bass, vocals), Zach Patrick (Guitar), Elliott Obermaier (Guitar), and Brian Healey (Drums).

There is a special treat at Pearl Street Warehouse as the band will be supported by not one but two DC bands - Humbalaya and  Roscoe Tripp.  This will be a great night of music by three indie bands and we think that our local DC Music Scene and funk vibe will rub off on Six Foot Blonde in the tour dates and years to come.

We look forward to hearing Six Foot Blonde as they gather momentum as they support their latest EP, Tino's Place, before releasing their debut album, Ask Me How I Am, which is due later this summer on August 10th.

Where You Find The Next Big Thing – Appaloosa Festival Announces Their Inital 2024 Lineup

With the music industry back in full swing, the 2024 festival season looks to be a banner year for music festivals. Festival announcements and updates have been popping up left and right almost daily.   One of our favorite festivals in the region,  Appaloosa  Music Festival, returns yet again for what should be a glorious 2024 edition.

We were lucky enough to attend this festival in 2022 and fell in love with the atmosphere and picturesque location of this DMV festival.  While we love criss crossing the country to attend festivals, nothing says "a relaxing festival in a short drive from your own backyard" than the Appaloosa Festival held Labor Day Weekend in Front Royal, Virginia.

If your heart soars to the sound of roots music - then look no further because you will love the Appaloosa Festival. This roots music festival is held at Skyline Ranch Resort Front Royal, Virginia, just a short drive from the Nation's Capital. This festival offers a full spectrum of roots music, including Bluegrass, Celtic, Americana, and Indie-Folk.

Appaloosa Festival 2022 – A Beautiful Festival In The Spectacular Shenandoah Valley
THE SETTING:While they’ve been welcoming people to the Skyline Ranch, for years, DC Music Review got the privilege of joining[...]

The creative force behind the festival are hometown heroes Scythian. This national touring act spends much of its year traveling throughout the United States, captivating audiences from coast to coast. While on the road, the band keeps a close eye out and takes notice of burgeoning acts, and can spot these diamonds in the rough up close.

Over the years, the festival has hosted some of America's most talented and well-recognized musicians well before they became household names. In years past, Appaloosa Festival has hosted Fireside Collective, Mandolin Orange, Mipso, Sierra Hull, Molly Tuttle, and Billy Strings.   It almost seems that the road to the Grammy's and International Bluegrass Music Award makes its way straight through Front Royal, Virginia, and onto the stages of Appaloosa.

So keen is Scythian's eye for spotting talent they have embraced this "festival superpower" by stating that Appaloosa "Is Where You Find The Next Big Thing."  This year's lineup is no exception.  In fact we were going to publish our preview last week before Scythian dropped yet another lineup announcement - JigJam.  For those of you recently at DelFest over Memorial Day weekend, you were gobsmacked by JigJam's performance.  That is just a taste of what is to come.  Don't let the initial lineup annoucment deter you from attending this years edition.   We have spoken to the creatives behind the future lineup announcements, and while we cannot disclose who is yet to be announced, please trust us when we say you are not going to want to miss Labor Day Weekend at this festival. The festival is holding their cards close to their chest right now, however in the next few weeks the festival will reveal some big lineup announcements.

Appaloosa 2024 Lineup Poster

Beyond the compelling music and spectacular lineup, this is an opportunity to enjoy Labor Day weekend with your family in a low-key, family-friendly atmosphere with workshops and child-oriented performances. Moreso, you may just find a headlining act performing for your children under a small tent or have musical workshops by the stars of tomorrow. This festival offers plenty of fun for a quick trip out of town after re-adjusting to back-to-school schedules and traffic patterns. A kid's zone, beer garden, craft vendors, and four stages are sure to entertain everyone.

Scythian is not the only one with keen eyes - you will notice that the 2024 lineup has a 'To Be Announced' placeholder. Knowing Appaloosa's knack for spotting and signing talent, there is little doubt that upcoming lineup editions will make fans exceptionally happy and grateful when those last acts are announced.

But don't just take our word for it. Here's what you can look forward to:

Epic Lineup of Music: From rock and folk to indie and country, our lineup features top-notch artists and bands that will keep you grooving all weekend long.

Perfect Break from Work: We know you work hard. Appaloosa is designed to be your perfect getaway – a break from the grind to relax, dance, and enjoy life. There's no better way to celebrate your efforts than by joining us for a weekend filled with good music, great company, and amazing memories.

Delicious Eats: Savor a wide variety of food and drink options, with gourmet food trucks and local vendors offering everything from classic festival fare to vegan delights.

Incredibly Talented Market Vendors: We've got it all! Ranging from ceramic mugs to homegrown honey to handmade clothing, there's everything for everyone to enjoy!

HFStival 2024
Concert News

The HFStival Is Back! [UPDATED]

Updated June 18th, 2024 at 11:00 AM]

Last week, I.M.P. and the Washington Nationals announced that HFStival is returning to Washington, D.C. after more than a decade, and a ticket lottery was immediately launched.

Fans lucky enough to score tickets through the lottery will be notified no later than Friday afternoon. But for those who didn’t register (or didn’t get selected), I.M.P. announced there are two new ways to get in.

In response to the demand, and the nostalgia for buying HFStival tickets in person, I.M.P. will be releasing a limited number of upper deck tickets priced at $99.10, as a nod to the place on the dial of the radio station that started it all. These tickets will ONLY be available in person at the 9:30 Club box office on Saturday, one day only, June 22, starting at 9 a.m. Everyone who buys tickets this Saturday at the 9:30 Club box office will also get a commemorative HFStival 2024 poster, and Capitol Snow will be providing free snowballs onsite to keep fans cool. As always, there are no additional service fees at I.M.P. box offices and only credit cards are accepted.

Additionally, the remaining tickets in the lower levels will go on sale at Ticketmaster.com this Saturday, June 22 at 9 a.m.

After nearly twenly long years DC's most beloved and storied one day festival triumphantly returns - HFStival!  Whether you’re a veteran HFStival-goer or you’ve only heard the epic tales of the fabled fest, this is your chance to be a part of the concert event of the year at Nationals Park on September 21.  This will be a show for everyone who went to HFStival in decades past and those who weren’t around to be a part of the scene."

In 2005, D.C.’s first and longest-running progressive rock station moved from its place on the dial. While it was missed after its fade-out from terrestrial radio relevance, what left the greatest void was its most famous creation…the HFStival.

Starting in 1990, the HFStival was a yearly monster of an event that sold out quickly and featured the absolute best artists of that era each year.  The monsters of the era were everpresent at RFK Stadium from 1993 to 2004 as 55,000 to 90,000 people filled the stadium to capacity.  In later years the festival made its home at M&T Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland, and then Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.  During its heyday acts like Garbage, The Ramones, Rage Against The Machine, Green Day, Eminem, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, No Doubt, Beck, Oasis, blink-182, and The Offspring (to name a few) filled the stadium while up and comers performed on smaller stages in the parking lots.

The Washington Nationals and I.M.P. are reviving HFStival to cater to the recent explosion of acts from that era.

“Quintessential HFStival acts have been doing an unprecedented business, selling more tickets than they ever came close to back in the day, so it all made sense to bring back the HFStival,” said Seth Hurwitz, owner of I.M.P. - the 9:30 Club, The Anthem, and The Atlantis and operator of Merriweather Post Pavilion and Lincoln Theatre.

HFStival is returning Saturday, September 21 at Nationals Park, billed as “One Day, One Stage” featuring The Postal Service , Death Cab For Cutie, Incubus, Bush, Garbage, Jimmy Eat World, Girl Talk, Violent Femmes, Tonic, Filter, and Lit.

HFStival 2024 Poster

To give fans an equal shot at securing tickets, HFStival will use a lottery system, which is open now through midnight, Sunday, June 16. This is the same lottery system that was used for the The Atlantis's  "First of 44."  Everyone has the same chance of scoring tickets and no one has to camp out overnight next to a Ticketmaster equiped store like everyone had to do back in the 1990s - everyone has the same chances to enter from the comfort of their own home or mobile device.

Those entering the lottery will be made aware if their ticket order will be fulfilled by June 21. To register for the lottery, click here.

The Soul Rebels
Interviews

The Soul Rebels – An Interview With Marcus Hubbard

To say they have a diverse portfolio would be an understatement of how one might explain The Soul Rebels and how many artists they have collaborated with or the wide range of music they incorporate into their performances.  If we want to get down to the real nitty-gritty of it, in fact, there are very few musical acts that can say that they have done what this band has.  Over the years, they have forged creative partnerships with an eclectic roster of artists, spanning genres, generations, and geographic boundaries that would fill pages - captivating audiences across the globe tour after tour.

Fresh off weekend two of Jazzfest, easily one of the bucket-list festivals of millions, DC Music Review got to speak with trumpet player Marcus Hubbard about the next amazing tour that kicked off and makes its way through DC next week at historic The Howard Theatre.  Worn out but ready, Hubbard summarized the festivities in the Cresent City as a great way to wrap up in their native city and say a little goodbye to home.

“This is Tuesday, and I'm still in recovery. I just got out the shower because I was trying to wake myself up, but I'm still tired from Jazzfest.  You know, we do so many shows - we do a lot of shows with Soul Rebels, plus a lot of the members are doing stuff with other collabs and other people during that week, so we're constantly busy. We might have about three or four gigs per day, we didn't have any late ones this year, so that worked out in our favor. Also, usually this is the time when we are kind of saying our final goodbyes to home, because we know we're going to be out for a nice little while after this. So yeah, we looking forward to hitting the East Coast, West Coast, wherever we are taken. For us, we're ready to go and we're looking forward to it be really fun.”

The Soul Rebels w/s/g Ghostface Killah & GZA

The Soul Rebels w/s/g Ghostface Killah & GZA

With a tour schedule that ranges from Japan to California and everywhere in between, connection to not only the city, but the music of DC is something that is an added bonus when having the Nation’s Capital on the schedule.

“One thing we always talk about DC, because of the Go Go culture, is that it kind of reminds us of the New Orleans, like brass band cultures from the neighborhood - just it comes strictly out of the streets. That's why we feel like the connection with hip hop is music that came out of the streets, and at the beginning, wasn't accepted by mainstream, and after a while it started getting accepted. So DC is pretty cool and just super unique.  That’s the blessing - that we get to go to these different places and experience different cultures and stuff like that.”

Anyone familiar with the music of New Orleans and the world-famous musicians it has birthed, know how much of voice and influence that The Neville Brothers have in the city that sits along the Mississippi River.  That means the world when you find out that The Soul Rebels, were in part, named by the legends themselves.

“The thing about it is, they looked out for us early on, you know, they kind of looked at it as a younger group that's not trying to just do what everybody else is doing.  It was refreshing for them to see that somebody's trying to step out on their own, on merit, you know?"

"One of the guys was a family member of The Neville Brothers, so they were willing to give us a shot opening up for em at Tipitinas.  For a band with the amount of years we had been in existence, that was unheard of. You know, the band was probably about one or two years old and we were about to open up for the world famous Neville Brothers - it was a really good thing."

"We went on stage, we were doing a lot of stuff that they weren't expecting from the brass bands and they were like, ‘Man, you guys are doing your own thing - y'all like, rebelling against this, this ring, but it got like some soul to it’ - Cyril Neville was like, ‘Man, you guys are like, some soul rebels.’  When he said that, it just stopped. It was like, ‘that’s it, that's going to be the name!’"

"At the time, we were spit balling all kind of different names, I couldn't even tell you all the crazy names that were coming out, but when he said that, it just, we knew - this is incredible.  Once he said it, it just stuck and it fit with what we're doing. It's not that we're rebelling, we just wanted to be our own entity.  We wanted to make our own mark in this music, you know.”

Make their own mark is not even a worthy definition of what the members of this band have managed to do with their musical diversity.   The Soul Rebels' collaborative approach to bringing audiences something new and original, is their unmatched commitment to authenticity and mutual respect. Whether collaborating with legends like Marilyn Manson or Erykah Badu or giving an up-and-coming artist a shot to share the stage, the group approaches each collaboration as a dialogue, a meeting of minds and musical sensibilities. Rather than imposing their own vision onto their collaborators, they embrace the diversity of perspectives and experiences, allowing each artist to bring their own voice to the table.

"When you get in the room with them, it's like the conversation is musician and musician, you realize we're all the same people, we just play a different genre of music and we learn a lot when we do those collaborations.  Like with Metallica, just from a creating music standpoint, it was good to sit down and talk to them because we were learning music, that's what we do, too. When we learnin music, we gain a lot bigger respect for the different genres of music that we play. To hear how the music is written, it was like they explained to us how they approach creating music, which is - we found out - can be completely in the reverse of how we do it. "

It's just the actual interaction with these different artists, is the big part of it that the fans don't even get to see.  Like I wish you guys could be in the room for the conversations we had after we did the show with Marilyn Manson in Japan. We were in the dressing room two hours after the show, and he was talking about all kind of different things. The same thing happened with DMX. It's like, you start learning about these people, and you start having a real appreciation for the opportunity that you got to actually collab with these guys.  Lot of these people are where they are because they're serious about music and it helps us channel that.  Look, man, to be successful in this, you gotta really lock in, you know? And it's good to talk to those guys, and it's been a great experience, it really has"

As The Soul Rebels continue to push the boundaries of their music and explore new avenues of collaboration, one thing remains certain: their journey is far from over. With each new project and partnership, they continue to cement their status as pioneers and blaze a trail into uncharted territory time and time again.  The Soul Rebels are leading the way with their unmatched commitment to diversity, creativity, and collaboration and DCMR can't wait to have them back in our city with two of hip-hops favorites to shine bright on the stage at Howard Theatre.
