Nolan Taylor performs at The Hamilton on March 15, 2024
Concert Reviews

Nolan Taylor Is Tailor-Made for Hope and Heartache

You hear that? That’s not just a formatting issue, that’s me speechless. Nolan Taylor performed at The Hamilton Live on  Friday, March 15, under the velvet lights and among a sold out crowd of cowboys and city folk.

The evening began with Clarke Sexton, Clarke with an “e” as he made sure to clarify for the audience, opening for Taylor. Reminiscent of his Kentucky kinfolk, Chris Stapeton, his vocals will turn the lights out and lay you on a pillow. Like a trickling river, Sexton’s sensual and soulful performance created its own ambiance. Bringing back slow dancing at honky tonks, Clarke Sexton gets it right. Playing tracks like “Help” and “Oil Springs” from his 2020 album Journal Entry, he kept the crowd cheerfully stunned. He closed out his set with a cover of Stapleton’s “Sometimes I Cry” leaving the audience crying out for more.

Clarke Sexton

A busy night for Sexton, he also played guitar for his longtime friend, Nolan Taylor. When getting the crowd prepped for Taylor he asked if they were ready, and with a shy cheer, he commented “That’s weak as piss, let’s try that again.” That’s the kind of tough tenderness for his friend that comes through in his music.

The lights outlined Nolan Taylor as he stepped onto stage with his four other bandmates. A projection of a melancholic watercolor landscape, the cover art for his latest single “Cincinnati Heart”, was the backdrop during the performance. Juxtaposed on the image was a cardinal, a nod to Taylor’s track “Wicked Ways” when he writes “Mmm I wanna be that cardinal in your dogwood tree”. Taylor’s masterful storytelling starts there. Interweaving all the parts of his life into his work without forcing it on you. The cohesion and simplicity in his storytelling feels real and painful, the way he felt it as he belts it out.

We feel badly for Taylor because he can’t hear his music for the first time like we were so fortunate to have experienced last week. He doesn’t just sing his songs, he feels them, which compels us to do the same. Too often today musicians are merely entertainers selling tickets and dancing for dollars. Nolan Taylor reminds us what we forgot to remember: emotion hurts but it feels so good.

Nolan Taylor doesn’t just sing his songs, he feels them, which compels us to do the same.

Before he bared his soul with his self-healing tune “Darkness”, Taylor explained the impetus for the track, a recurring theme throughout the night. He shared with the audience his struggles with suicidal thoughts and depression and how a single moment at the cusp changed his life when he picked up his rarely played electric guitar and wrote the song in a single sitting while his girlfriend was in the other room. In the second verse he apologizes to her for the unfathomable, “And honey I'm so sorry/If you ever find me cold and stiff/Cut me down, just hold me.” While mental illness and artists’ struggles with real world issues has become more common in music and art today, it’s Taylor’s openness in and out of his music that resonates.

Nolan Taylor

With even a cursory search of “Darkness” online, you will come across his viral discussions about the song’s genesis and, in that, you too will feel that sting when he tears up as he shares about his darkest thoughts and how he’s been prioritizing his healing since then.

He finished out the night with his viral track “68”, a scathing letter to his mother about growing up poor and at the whim of her mental health and addiction issues. Watching him access his childhood and find a way out in real time, he elicited the joy of summiting a mountain and then the rush of immediately base jumping off of it when he finally exclaims “I’m done now/ and I’m through with you.”

As of September of 2023, Taylor is officially an Atlantic Records artist, and he’s hitting the ground running with the release of his EP Life & Love and his Cincinnatti Heart Tour going through the end of June. Continuing his festival circuit appearances after last year’s success at the Dreamy Draw Music Festival in Arizona, Taylor will perform at festivals across Kentucky, Texas, and Oregon this summer.

Nolan Taylor

Nolan Taylor ever the entertainer.

With a relaxed, self-deprecating, and witty banter, akin to Tyler Childers’ Kentucky cadence, Taylor engaged with the audience honestly and humbly, sharing his journey to The Voice and how his rejection and an inspired song to his girlfriend “500”, who was 500 miles away, finally motivated him to pursue music full time.

Nolan Taylor is not just a singer/songwriter. He’s like a snake charmer, cautiously and courageously luring out of us through his lilt and lyrics what we have numbed with the rush of our everyday and what we forgot to feel.

Nolan Taylor is not just a singer/songwriter. He’s like a snake charmer, cautiously and courageously luring out of us through his lilt and lyrics what we have numbed with the rush of our everyday and what we forgot to feel. If your hair doesn’t stand on your neck and your stomach doesn’t drop, you aren’t listening. As he continues to shine, we’re listening–and thawing–every step of the way. Shoot him a text: his phone number is on his website in case you want to chat.

Sleater-Kinney Brings Riot Grrrl Anthems to The Wharf

Nearly every time Sleater-Kinney is brought up in conversation, “ICONS” is instinctively blurted. Maybe it’s that the legendary indie rock band, formed by college-aged Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein in 1994, stirs up our lingering late 90s angst. Maybe that their songs hit on feminist themes that still ring true today; topics that have continued to boil and bubble over the last 30 years.  Or the way the Sleater-Kinney discography has ebbed and flowed over the passage of time just as we all have, making their songs more relatable than ever. For these reasons and more, Sleater-Kinney’s influence on the Riot Grrrl subculture for over 30 years is truly iconic.

Before Sleater-Kinney took the stage at The Anthem in Washington, D.C on March 12, 2024, an opening set by Black Belt Eagle Scout lit a fire in the expansive room.  Katherine Paul, a rising force in the indie rock scene, delivered a performance that blended hypnotic dream pop and Indigenous influences. Paul's ethereal vocals and introspective songwriting drew the audience into an intimate dreamscape that can only be described as ”Electric Earth.” Black Belt Eagle Scout left a lasting impression, preparing the audience for the show to come.

Finally,  amidst a smoky haze, the triple-arched backdrop was filled with blood red. As the crowd cheered, Tucker and Brownstein slipped on their guitars and conjured the album’s lead-off track,  “Hell.” Following the tracklist of  their latest album, Little Rope (released in January 2024), they  barrelled into  “Needlessly Wild.” Just as the audience thought they might play Little Rope through, the indie greats took it back to “Get Up” from their 1999 album The Hot Rock”

The stage now oscillated between deep blue and crimson. The moody beginning evolved into a spectacle as the women (supported by drummer Angie Bowlan, multi-instrumentalist Katie Harkin, and keyboardist Toko Yasuda)electrified the stage with a performance that was nothing short of mesmerizing. Soon, the two ornate low hanging chandeliers glistened with alternating blinks. Brownstein, placidly heel-toed across the stage in business casual while Turner,  donning an elegant structured dress and mary jane pumps, echoed haunting vocals throughout the now legendary venue.

As the band tore through 20 songs, the lights crescendoed like waves crashing. The setlist was a storytelling tapestry; classics were threaded in and around fresh tracks.  Each song built upon the last, rage billowing like the teal-purple haze emanating from the stage.  White starbursts flared behind their silhouettes, and songs  like "Jumpers" and "Modern Girl" resonated with the crowd. Their cutting lyrics tackled themes of identity, empowerment, and grief. With their raw fearlessness, most prominently shown when Tucker climbed offstage and pushed into the crowd, the band reaffirmed their status as timeless icons.

Sleater-Kinney performs at The Athem on March 12, 2024

Sleater-Kinney embodied the core values of the Riot Grrrl movement. “Girls to the front” could be found in nearly every traditionally male-dominated space. Women and female-identifying team members ran the show: selling merch, tuning guitars and trading them out, and directing stagehands. Five women boldly filled the stage, two leading the riot while the others gleamed on pedestals til the lights blacked out.

Sleater-Kinney performs at The Athem on March 12, 2024

The three-song encore consisted of “Say It Like You Mean It,” “Dig Me Out,” and “Entertain” which served as a poignant reminder of the band's enduring relevance. As the final notes of "Entertain" echoed, it was clear that Sleater-Kinney's performance at The Anthem would be remembered as nothing short of legendary.

Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker represent all that the Riot Grrrl subculture stands for, namely solidarity in disrupting the status quo. Their music conveys what we all want to say: hear me and hear me loudly, because I’m not going away.

A huge thank you for Sleater-Kinney disrupting the status quo and meeting and greeting  their fans head on!

Foo Fighters Keep the Movement for Healthcare Price Transparency Rocking

On Tuesday, March 5th, Power To The Patients held a special performance for invited health care advocates, healthcare professionals, and legislatures where they brought their message of making our healthcare system more honest, affordable, equitable, and accessible through real, upfront prices.

Before Foo Fighters took the stage, Fat Joe, Chuck D, and Valerie June shared their personal stories about the fear and uncertainty we all face when hospitals and insurers hide their prices. That’s why they urged ALL Members of Congress to support the bipartisan Health Care PRICE Transparency Act 2.0, cosponsored by Senators Bernie Sanders and Mike Braun. The Senate bill builds on progress made by the House, and will protect all patients, workers, employers, unions, and consumers by empowering them with access to all upfront prices, receipts, and claims data to ensure billing integrity and avoid overcharges.

As Fat Joe exclaimed from the stage, “This is a catastrophe in America that cannot be swept under the rug… All we’re asking for is the prices. Estimates are bullsh*t. We want the prices.”

Despite recent polling that revealed 94% of Americans support systemwide healthcare price transparency, a new report found only 34.5% of hospitals in the U.S. are fully complying with the federal Hospital Price Transparency Rule.

Dave Grohl dedicated "My Hero" to Chuck D from the stage late into the evening.  We truly feel that all the performers and speakers on stage and behind the scenes are our heroes.

We recognize that so long as mortality holds steady at 100% and we are all vulnerable to accidents and health issue we need to join with others and request that Congress acts NOW to strengthen and expand healthcare price transparency.  People should not be afraid to go to a doctor, afraid to go to a hospital, and terrifed of being admitted to a hospital where they may leave thousands of dollars in debt.  This means NO estimates, ALL real prices and receipts for care. Now, more than ever, Americans need financial certainty, integrity, and accountability in their healthcare.

As a music website, but more importantly, as human beings who are just as subseptible to illness and medical bills, we encourage you to show your continued support and subscribe to the healthcare revolution and join us in your support.

From Accra to DC: Rolling Cocoa Festival Celebrates Ghanaian Independence Weekend at The Anthem

Ghanaian Independence Weekend in the DMV was headlined by the inaugural edition of Rolling Cocoa, a vibrant Ghanaian music festival brought to life by Duke Concept, at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, March 9th. At venues and clubs around the region, Duke Concept held preparties and afterparties to celebrate Ghana beyond the festival.

Duke Concept founder Osita "Duke" Ugeh said it best: “this festival was more than just a concert – it was a celebration of culture, a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and bring people together.”

The festival quickly filled out The Anthem’s capacity after the doors opened at 6 PM. Although advertised as a seated event, this festival was not one where the crowd sat back and enjoyed the music passively. Nonstop dancing filled the rows between chairs and every corner of the venue, exceeding the boundaries of a typical Anthem show.  Fans flocked from all corners of the East Coast to celebrate Ghanaian culture as well as their heart pounding music.

Eight acts, headlined by Stonebwoy and Black Sherif, took the stage throughout the night. MCs Kwasi Beast and Kappacinco kept the energy up between sets, which was no problem at all for this crowd. The showcase of Ghanaian included Efya’s soulful vocals, R2Bees’ infectious presence, plus more from Kwesi Arthur, Camidoh, and Kidi.

After the festival, Rolling Cocoa announced their rebrand to “Golden Cocoa” for all future festivals and concerts. In 2025, Duke Concept plans to expand the festival to London, New York, and Toronto.

While the night was all about Ghana, fans with Ivorian, Nigerian, and Malian heritage came out to support Ghanaian Independence. It was an honor to get to experience the joy of the DMV’s West African communities coming together to celebrate Ghanaian music, dancing, and culture.

Tedeschi Trucks Band Leads an Allman Brothers Revival with Duane Betts

In a swirling haze of neon lights cast upon gold leaf and velvet curtains, the Tedeschi Trucks Band unleashed a torrential storm of bluesy goodness upon the Warner Theatre in Washington, DC, on March 7, 2024. This performance wasn't just a concert; it was a transcendental experience that took the audience back in time to the days when the Allman Brothers Band was still touring the country.

As the clock struck showtime, the atmosphere was electric, pulsating with the anticipation of what would come. Duane Betts—the son of Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts—opened with an acoustic trio featuring Johnny Stachela on guitar and Tedeschi Trucks Band drummer Tyler "Falcon" Greenway on a snare drum with brushes. Duane led the trio in mostly original music featuring songs from his debut solo album Wild & Precious, recorded in Derek and Susan's home studio in Jasonville, Florida.

Duane also performed "Seven Turns," an Allman Brothers Band song written by his father after being inspired by an old Navajo story. Duane's likeness to Dickey was only matched by how similar their voices sound, and the acoustic trio, filled with slide guitar solos performed by Stachela, further set the tone for an incredible evening of roots rock music and a revival of several Allman Brothers Band classics.

Kicking off the headlining set with "Just as Strange," the Tedeschi Trucks Band set the stage for an odyssey through the depths of soulful soundscapes and heart-wrenching melodies. Lead vocalist Susan Tedeschi's voice cut through the air like a hot knife through butter, commanding attention and respect with every note. Tedeschi, a veteran of the blues scene since her early years, brought a lifetime of experience and passion to the stage. Her musical journey was evident in every heartfelt lyric and soulful riff, from her humble beginnings performing in smoky bars to sharing the stage with legends like Eric Clapton and B.B. King.

Derek Trucks

And when her husband, guitar virtuoso Derek Trucks, unleashed his fiery licks, it was like watching a sorcerer conjure magic from thin air. Trucks, a prodigy who began his musical journey at a tender age, inherited the blues gene from his family's musical legacy, including his uncle Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers Band. Together, Tedeschi and Trucks formed a powerhouse duo that is backed by an incredible group of musicians (Mike Mattison on guitar & vocals, Gabe Dixon on keys & vocals, Brandon Boone on bass, Tyler "Falcon Greenwell on drummers & percussion, Isaac Eady on drums & percussion, Mark Rivers on vocals, Alecia Chakour on vocals, Kebbi Williams on sax, Ephraim Owens on trumpet, and Elizabeth Lea on trombone) who elevate the blues to new heights.

The setlist was a rollercoaster ride through the annals of musical history, paying homage to legends like Derek and the Dominos with a soul-stirring rendition of "Tell the Truth." The set continued with the horn section walking on stage to perform "Don't Drift Away," then the band continued with "I Am the Moon," the title track of their 2022 album. Susan remarked that it was one of her favorite songs the band wrote during the pandemic. They continued with "Idle Wind," which swept the audience away on a gust of triumphant emotion with Tedeschi's power vocals and the horn section's beautiful harmonies.

Tedeschi Trucks

Tedeschi Trucks band then paid tribute to the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin, with a spine-tingling cover of "It Ain't Fair" led by vocalist Alicia Chakour—whose belting vocals lifted the roof off the venue. The band kept the classics rolling with a fiery rendition of "Outside Woman Blues" featuring Derek's blistering guitar solo. The band then slowed the night down with one of their biggest hits, "Midnight in Harlem." Derek picked up the pace with two songs that he recorded with the Derek Trucks Band, "Leaving Trunk" and "Volunteered Slavery," both of which showcased Derek's prowess on the slide guitar. Susan followed up the duo of DTB songs with one of her bluesy originals, "Just Won't Burn." Tedeschi led the band in the sad and methodical blues ballad that peaked with her playing a mournful weeping guitar solo.

Mike Mattison

As the night peaked, opener Duane Betts joined the fray, adding an extra layer of intensity to a nearly 30-minute Allman Brothers Band mini-set. The band began by launching into the euphoric "Blue Sky," during which, both Derek and Duane took extended solos. They continued the Allman Brothers Revival with a colossal version of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," which showcased more incredible dueling guitar solos from Trucks and Betts, thundering drum solos from Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eady, and an organ solo that would make Gregg Allman blush from Gabe Dixon. The chemistry between Betts and Trucks was palpable, sparking fireworks on stage that reminded the audience of Derek's early years with the Allman Brothers Band in the late 1990s.

Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi

The band returned for an encore that left jaws on the floor and hearts in the stratosphere. "Soul Sweet Song" was a balm for the soul, leaving audiences feeling warm and relaxed, while their rendition of "How Blue Can You Get?" was a gut-wrenching testament to the power of the blues. In the end, as the lights dimmed and the echoes of applause faded into the night, one thing was clear: the Tedeschi Trucks Band didn't just perform; they put on a revival for one of the greatest rock bands who paved the road they continue to travel today.

Never Miss A Sunday Show – Neighbor and Kendall Street Company Take The Atlantis On A Four Hour Music Adventure

On Sunday, March 3rd, 2024, fans gathered at The Atlantis in Washington, DC, reinforcing the age-old music saying, "Never Miss A Sunday Show." Sunday's musical odyssey was the culmination of a mini co-headlining tour by Kendall Street Company and Neighbor. Each band has previously headlined tours but decided to combine forces for a mini-tour of epic proportions. True to never missing a Sunday show, this performance would be a four-hour voyage of stage antics, covers, showmanship, virtuosity, ecstasy, and euphoria.

Ryan Wood of Kendall Street Company

The first to take the stage was Charlottesville, Virginia, based, Kendall Street Company was the first to take to Atlantis's stage. The quintet, composed of Louis Smith (Rhythm Guitar / Vocals), Brian Roy (Bass), Ryan Wood (Drums), Ben Laderberg (Lead Guitar), and Jake Vanaman (Saxophone/Keys), last performed at The Atlantis on December 22nd, 2023. Tonight, it felt as if the band had only left the stage a few minutes earlier and returned for the second set at the venue. The band walked on stage, took to their instruments, and continued right where they left off. True to their reputation, each Kendall Street performance would be unique with new songs, on-stage shenanigans, humorous interactions with themselves and the audience, and tremendous music.

The evening would start with a rocking "Marijuana Timewarp" before shifting gears to a funk-infused "Blade Runner" and then into their first cover of the night, "Clyde" by J.J. Cale. The band turned their attention to "Mister Funky Daddy" as the band's interaction and connection to the audience would be on full display. The band would oscillate from a funky "Mister Funky Daddy" to an energetic and euphoric version, all the while Jake Vanaman's saxophone echoed through the venue. Frontman Louis Smith started talking to bassist Brian Roy, wondering, "You think we can go faster than that? Let's see if we can do it faster - yeah, we can." The banter continued while Roy would respond, "I'm not scared. I'm being prepared," before slipping into a deliberately slow version of the song. As one would remark on stage, "Slow can be scary."

Next, after performing "393," the band would introduce it as a new song. This year, the band has ambitions to release one new song every month - be on the lookout for twelve new songs coming in 2024. Next band would be anything but slow when a euphoric "BBC" by Ming Tea roared from the stage. The band would continue with some of their signature songs, including "Porridge," before inviting Richard James of Neighbor on stage for "Becca's Dad." Soon after, the band unleashed one of their most recognizable fan favorites, "Cars," before pivoting with "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley.

Stage dynamics and "Rick Rolling" aside, this song summed up the sincere love between the band and their fan - neither the fan nor the band wanted to give up or let down the other. Kendalls Street Company continues its heavy touring schedule, crisscrossing the country and bringing its unique stage presence with them. We encourage you to see this band as much as possible, as every show is unique and well worth the price of admission, and you will leave with a smile that will last for days.

Neighbor taking to the stage and acknowledging the crowd.

After a short break, Neighbor would take the stage for what would be an unforgettable two-hour performance that oscillated between soulful and poignant to unsurpassed explosive musical energy. Neighbor is composed of a remarkable group of virtuosic musicians - Richard James (keys, vocals), Lyle Brewer (guitar), Dan Kelly (bass), and Dean "The Dux" Johnston (drums). The band first gained a following in Boston, then throughout New England, and has become embraced by fans nationwide. Last year, they made their international debut performing at Jam Cruise and appeared at Camp Greensky Iceland in addition to founding their first West Coast destination, camping festival - Camp Navarro.

Neighbor Brings A Powerful Downpour Of Music To The Recher On Their Road To The Ramble
On Saturday, July 29th, another fierce storm blew into the region - make that two storms. In the late afternoon,[...]

Dan Kelly of Neighbor

Neighbor would paint the mood for the night with "What Should Will Never Be" before transitioning to an upbeat and syncopated "Lonely Rider." "Lonely Rider" is as infectious as it is upbeat, harkening to a sonic cousin, "Back On The Train" by Phish. This song would help launch into "Broadway," where midway through the song, Lyle Brewster would launch into a solo of pure ferocity and technical mastery that Brewer is well known for. As the band continued to surge forward with momentum behind them, they would continue onward with "Stay Loose" before launching into one of their rarer covers - "Where is My Mind?" by the Pixies. Stunned and delighted fans embraced this song as Dan Kelly's ferocious vocal delivery stunned the audience. We heard one audience member turn to another and wonder if they should make a "Let Dan Sing" T-Shirt reminiscent of the "Let Trey Sing" T-Shirt circulating after Dead & Company's Fare Thee Well Tour in 2015.

Lyle Brewer of Neighbor

With the audience drenched in musical bliss, the quartet would land on "Great Barrier Reef" before being submerged in a resounding chorus of 'Na Na Na Na's echoing in the venue during "I Tried." Neighbor would soon rocket into fan favorite "Trippin' In A Van." The best was yet to come as the band launched into one of their more beloved and recognizable songs, "Pine Tree." This version of "Pine Tree" will be long remembered for a sit-in by Louis Smith of Kendall Street Company. Smith would appear on stage and perform "Low" by Cracker before Neighbor returned to complete "Pine Tree." During "Low," Smith and Kelly took turns singing lyrics as the audience sang along with beaming smiles.

Dan Kelly of Neighbor
Lyle Brewer of Neighbor
Richard James of Neighbor

Neighbor decided not to let the audience catch their breath as they launched into a soaring performance of "Steel" backed by a strong and steady hypnotic groove. Recognizing that the venue's curfew was drawing near, Neighbor raised the white flag as Richard James sang an impassioned and delicate version of "White Flag." The band would briefly leave the stage to let James bask in the rays of a singular spotlight. Rejoining James on stage, the band would collectively end the evening's performance with a heartfelt version of "Bottom Of My Heart," expressing their gratitude for fans joining them at The Atlantis.

Richard James of Neighbor

As the four-hour musical expedition ended, the audience filed out of the venue with beaming faces after witnessing such an exceptional night of music. Each band is singularly incredible and worth seeing, but this pairing provided for some truly unforgettable nights of music. We look forward to DMV stalwarts Kendall Street Company coming back to the DC again after an ambitious upcoming tour, and we look forward equally as much to when Neighbor returns to our region. Be sure to keep an eye out for upcoming performances from each band.

Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and alternative reggae rock musician Matisyahu brings his Hold The Fire Tour 2024 to the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC on Wednesday, March 20th.   The 34-date headlining outing, with special guest Cydeways, is crossing the country in support of his brand-new EP of the same name - Hold The Fire.

Matisyahu is not just a gifted musician, but works towards building up communities.  To that end, $1 of every ticket sale will be donated to the Last Prisoner Project, a nonprofit dedicated to cannabis criminal justice reform and releasing every nonviolent cannabis prisoner.

Matisyahu - Hold The Fire (Released Feb. 2, 2024)

Hold The Fire, was released in early February and is centered around the four earth elements, with the EP’s lead single “Fireproof” touching upon Matisyahu’s unwavering ability to keep his artistic fire burning. The track explores the topics of perseverance and gratitude in times of trouble. As a theme everyone can relate to, especially with what is currently happening in Israel, “Fireproof” is resonating with listeners everywhere for its timely and hopeful message and has already been hailed as “an anthem of overcoming adversity.” Matisyahu also reflects on celebrity and artistic success and the observation that we often find ourselves imitating other people or listening too much to their opinions of us,

Matisyahu - Hold The Fire (Released Feb. 2, 2024)

Matisyahu burst out on the international stage in 2004 with the arrival of his debut album  Shake Off The Dust...Arise. What began with that first track "Chop 'em Down," Matisyahu has been chopping down crossover reggea hits for nearly 20 years and teaming up up with the best improvisational musicians and artists for jam sessions, collaborations, and remixes of mind blowing proportions.

One of Matisyahu's biggest hits which was a one of the theme songs for the 2010 Winter Olympics and included as part of  the official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album.

Like only the most gifted storytellers, Matisyahu spins the rare kind of stories that simultaneously enlighten, enthrall, and expand the audience’s sense of possibility. Known for his skill in blending a shapeshifting collision of reggae, hip-hop, alt rock and boldly inventive pop – all while paying homage to his spirituality and roots in Judaism.

If you think Matisyahu studio albums are impressive, his live shows are where this gifted artist shines!  His live shows consistently provide audiences with a dynamic and energetic performance full of life and illumination.

We hope you come to the 9:30 Club on March 20th for what should be a joyous night of music and heartfelt emotion.

Pittsburgh-Based ‘The Ghost Club’ Embarks On Their First National Tour And Is Coming To DC’s Songbyrd

Domenic Dunegan, lead singer and founding member of the Pittsburgh-based band The Ghost Club, views music as a form of communication. With the band’s first tour coming up, he and his band will have the chance to communicate with new local music scenes, including Washington, D.C.

The up-and-coming Pittsburgh-based band The Ghost Club is set to go on tour for the first time, with stops up and down the East Coast. They are releasing an album on Feb. 28 and will begin their tour the next day. The band will perform at the Songbyrd Music House in Washington, D.C. on March 3rd.

The journey to this tour has been a long time coming. Though The Ghost Club formed in 2016, they released their first song in 2018 and didn’t play their first live show until the start of 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It took a while for Dunegan to gather a group of band members, but the 26-year-old frontman was determined. He reached out to a number of people, trying to get them involved.

“There’s always a lot of face value and enthusiasm, but they didn’t realize I was actually being serious about it,” Dunegan said in an interview. A lot of people ghosted him, but that sparked inspiration for a band name. Many dead group chats later, Dunegan finally found a cohesive group of bandmates that would last, and thus The Ghost Club was formed.

All members of the band are Pennsylvania natives.  The band now consists of Dunegan on lead vocals, saxophonist Jake Barber, bassist Logan Casper, drummer Christian Laliberte, and Isaiah Ross on lead guitar.

Dunegan felt relieved when this iteration of the group came together because he could tell they all love doing what they do together. With the new album coming up, he was proud of the musicianship that his bandmates put into it.

Despite all these efforts over the last eight years, Dunegan was not planning on pursuing music – that is, until his father took him to a Bruce Springsteen concert.

“I went in and then came out thinking to myself, ‘Okay, I need to try to do what that guy does,’” Dunegan said. “And since then, it’s just been stepping stone after stepping stone, figuring out how a band works, how to write music, how to perform. And I’m just still learning as I go.”

In terms of writing music, Dunegan emphasized that the process is never linear; it is hard to sit down and force himself to write, and often the best ideas strike randomly. He described an incident in which he was packing for Los Angeles to record a song with producer Eric Palmquist.

“I had a bass guitar that just came in the mail that we were going to use, and I was just playing it while I was walking around, packing my bags,” Dunegan said. “And then I wrote the baseline for the song ‘Same Graves’ and just kind of hammered that one out while I was packing.”

With its poignant lyrics and electro-funk rhythms, ‘Same Graves,’ originally released in 2020, is currently The Ghost Club’s top song.

There have been a few notable artists that have come from Pittsburgh, such as Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifa, and Christina Aguilera. But according to Dunegan, the music industry in Pittsburgh can often be cold to those who want to continue a career in music. Many artists move to Los Angeles or New York where the industry is more supportive of those careers, but The Ghost Club has been able to establish a name for themselves in the Steel City.

Pittsburgh does play a role in The Ghost Club’s music, though. The city has a lot of rock fans, so their new album will feature a lot of rock influence, according to Dunegan.

Hannah Levitt of Shelter Music Group, The Ghost Club’s manager, is as excited for the tour as the band members are. She first saw the band perform at Mr. Smalls Theatre in Pittsburgh and saw so much potential in them.

“This is all they’ve wanted to do, just begging to get out on the road,” Levitt said. “So I think the energy will be incredible.”

Dunegan said the band actually tends to thrive in environments with nervous energy. He said the band’s two best gigs were their first ever show in Pittsburgh and a big show in Los Angeles.

“We were so absurdly scared because it was Los Angeles,” Dunegan said. “That scared nervous energy made us just way, way better onstage.”

Regardless of the size of their shows, the band always tries to keep their audiences in high spirits.

“I get a little bit too in my head, but when people throw energy at you, you throw it back at them and then they just keep bouncing that back and forth,” Dunegan said. “That's always just a great feeling.”

The Ghost Club at SongByrd in Washington, DC

The band and their team are excited to perform at Songbyrd Music House at the beginning of March.

“Oh man, I mean, Songbyrd as a venue is just legendary,” Levitt said. “D.C. is a hotbed of where great musicians get to go, and we couldn’t do an east coast run without hitting D.C.”

Despite the band’s close ties to Pittsburgh, Dunegan also has a connection with the nation’s capital.

“D.C. was actually where I recorded the first songs I ever worked on, so it’s going to be cool to be back in D.C.,” Dunegan said.

The band will be on tour between February 29 and April 20, 2024, with a stop in Washington, D.C. on March 3 and finishing it off at home in Pittsburgh.

Tyler Ramsey performs at Pearl Street Warehouse on Feb 20, 2024
Concert Reviews

Tyler Ramsey Is Iridescent at Pearl Street Warehouse

On Tuesday, February 20th, we were spoiled with a coffee house-esque performance by Tyler Ramsey and Jeremy Lister. Like a session from the intimate video production company OurVinyl coming out of Nashville, the three-hour performance at Pearl Street Warehouse highlighted each artist’s unique voice and musical prowess while evoking equal parts sorrow and hope for tomorrow.

Jeremy Lister

Jeremy Lister, a crooner turned acapella singer turned ultra-marathon runner, opened for Ramsey on the first show of the 24-stop tour running through the beginning of April. If you’re in the mood to have your mind blown, you need to see Lister sing…anything. Beginning his acoustic set with his song “Hostage” from his 2007 EP Just One Day, his flawless falsetto just absolutely comes out of nowhere and had me looking around the room in shock to make sure someone else was seeing this happen. As he belts out “never letting you get away,” you pray that you continue swimming in his vocals for eternity. Lister’s banter with the crowd was equally top-notch.

While skillfully strumming his 2019 single  “LOVELOVE,” he shared that it’s composed of the same four chords that have famously climbed the charts and became hit songs. He then proceeded to effortlessly transition into a mini-mashup of “Africa”, “Hey Soul Sister”, “Complicated”, and “Poker Face” and then back into his tune. The crowd was laughing and singing along–an unusual but lauded and welcomed feat that Lister succeeded at. In addition to vinyl and some shirts, Lister was selling hot sauce that he and his brothers make (Blister Hot Sauce.) Like his vocal range, Jeremy Lister tries a little bit of everything and excels at a lotta bit of everything. You can catch him now through March 2 in Chicago opening for Tyler Ramsey.

Tyler Ramsey

Tyler Ramsey would take the stage with his tall and slender build with a gentle demeanour graciously thanking the audience for attending the first performance of his current tour.  Tyler Ramsey, formerly lead guitarist for Band of Horses, decided in 2017 to step away from national touring and long stints on the road and live a quieter life amongst the serene landscapes of Western North Carolina with his family.  Earlier this month Ramsey released a masterful new album New Lost Ages.

This evening would deservedly showcase songs from New Lost Ages, but he would sprinkle the performance with several songs from the full breadth of his five solo-albums including a luscious and harmonic version of "White Coat".  True to the intimate coffee-house setting, Ramsey would spend the evening with a sparse and beautiful three person band configuration with a serene pedal steel guitarist and Jeremy Lister on backup vocals.  Throughout the evening Ramsey would ct the audience with his beautiful etherial vocals and magnificent guitar playing.

Expressing the same sentiment as country artist Parker McCollum in his track “I Can’t Breathe” when he laments “I'm on the road missin' home, missin' the road while I'm home,” Ramsey’s lyrics in 2019 song “A Dream of Home'' perfectly explained his hiatus from touring recently with “There's a dream of home/ For those that work out on the road/ And there’s a vision of the road for all the others.”

Tyler Ramsey

In conjunction with the recent release of Ramsey’s newest album New Lost Ages, he is back on the road for a two month stretch across the country. He reflected on leaving his family at home and quipped during the show that it was an “interesting sensation to leave the house.”

Album Review: New Lost Ages by Tyler Ramsey

As he gripped his guitar with confidence and competence, his feet quietly rested on the stool supporting his craft. Accommodating the various arrangements during his set, Lister was gratefully smiling, if not beaming, as he provided backup vocals and backup guitar duties.  Throughout the evening Ramsey gratefully smiled from behind his beard and expressed his sincere gratitude to the audience.

With my minimal musical knowledge and an arduous image search, the pedal steel guitar is what was producing ethereal and mournful sounds alongside Ramsey’s pensive lyrics. Between witnessing the meticulous manipulation of the instruments with ease and passion and Ramsey’s Neil Young vocals we were lovingly wrapped in their waves. As he performed his tribute to late guitarist Neal Casal, “Flare (For Neal Casal)” highlights that painful crescendo in Ramsey’s voice and lyricism when he begins “I saw a flare on the sea/ Somebody out there signaling.” With a brief understanding of Casal’s tragic end, hearing and watching this song played live ached in my chest.

Tyler Ramsey

Toward the end of his set he performed the track “Fires” on the new album. As if we weren’t already hearing Neil Young throughout the night, something about the woeful lamentations of the song was reminiscent of CSNY’s battlecry for accountability “Ohio.” “Fires” doesn't rely too heavily on lyrical elements but rather Ramsey’s voice, like the top of a tear drop waiting to pop, and impeccable picking skills elevate the song’s impact.

Tyler Ramsey

Informing the crowd that he lives in Asheville, NC (a notably “crunchy” town whose residents value taking it slow and pickin’ it fast), it immediately clicked–his eight-inch Red Wings laced to the top, thick, salt and pepper foliage, and gentle gaze belonged in the mountains, which is where he actually wrote his new album.

New Lost Ages, the album, is masterfully produced and thoughtfully written, yet New Lost Ages, the tour, is captivating and demands your emotional surrender.

Tyler Ramsey is touring through April 10th and we highly recommend seeing him and emotionally surrendering to his music at a venue near you. The world needs more Tyler Ramsey and we hope you surrender your heart to his music as we have.

Neighbor And Kendall Street Company Are Coming To The Atlantis on March 3rd

Washington DC better get ready because two bands of epic proportions are coming to The Atlantis on Sunday, March 3rd - Neighbor and Kendall Street Company.

These two powerhouse bands are prepared to deliver hours of music, bliss, and shenanigans to DC's newest venue. Each of these bands has performed in and around Washington DC regularly and brings with them a vast swath of fans.

The bands each have a distinctive style and sound. Still, one thing is certain: this night of music will surely delight everyone with a full spectrum of sonic sounds ranging from soulful songs to explosive jams and peaking solos to the unexpected and unpredictable shenanigans unfolding before our eyes.

Neighbor began as a collaboration between childhood neighbors Richard James (keyboard/vocals) and his childhood neighbor Lyle Brewer (guitarist). James and Brewer recruited two exceptional musicians, Dan Kelly (bass) and Dean Johnston (drummer), to join the band.  What started as a simple residency each Tuesday at Thunder Road in Somerville, Massachusetts, has become a remarkable group of virtuosic musicians. Although the band first gained a following in Boston, then throughout New England, and has expanded its reach to all corners of the country and beyond, including the international waters aboard Jam Cruise and appearances at Camp Greensky Iceland in Reykjavik alongside Greensky Bluegrass.

Kendall Street Company is a genre-fluid, eclectic rock ensemble from Charlottesville, Virginia. The band has drawn varied comparisons to the dynamic jams of Umphrey's McGee and Widespread Panic, the songwriting of John Prine, the experimental psychedelia of Pink Floyd, the progressive jazz-infused rock of Frank Zappa, and the off-color humor of Ween and They Might Be Giants. In addition to their reputation as must-see live performers, The Company's prolific immunity to writer's block has led them to release over 100 original songs between seven studio albums, two live albums, and four EPs in just six years. Their live shows often include unreleased and improvised tracks and covers ranging from The Grateful Dead to DEVO to Alanis Morisette to Soulja Boy. With a full in-ear monitor and multitrack recording rig built, the band continues to capture the moments that mean the most to fans. This band has an ambitious plan for 2024, as they will release a new single each month.
