The Kitchen Dwellers and Sicard Hollow Bring Psychedelic Bluegrass to the Hamilton Live

On a lively Friday evening in late April, The Hamilton Live hosted an extraordinary performance by the Kitchen Dwellers, the Boseman, Montana-based bluegrass quartet. With their intricate musicianship, infectious energy, and unique electronic bluegrass sounds–known as galaxy grass–the Kitchen Dwellers left a lasting impression on the audience, delivering a memorable night of music to a packed and rowdy house.

Composed of Max Davies on guitar, Torrin Daniels on banjo, Joe Funk on bass, and Shawn Swain on mandolin, the Kitchen Dwellers' showcased their skills on a mix of original compositions and well-chosen covers that demonstrated their versatility and reverence for bluegrass traditions. Original tracks like "Hell to Sunday," "Bottom Shelf," and "Muir Maid" showcased the band's ability to seamlessly blend their traditional bluegrass roots with elements of jamgrass and progressive rock.

In addition to their original material, the Kitchen Dwellers treated the crowd to several stellar covers. Their rendition of "Blue Indian" by Widespread Panic was a true highlight, with the band infusing their unique flavor into the beloved tune. Furthermore, paying homage to the legends of bluegrass, the band delivered captivating versions of Bill Monroe's "Big Mon" and "Whitehouse Blues." These covers showcased the band's deep respect for the genre's roots while adding their modern twist.

The band's connection with the audience was palpable throughout the night. Nearly every audience member was on their feet, dancing to the Kitchen Dweller's funky galaxy grass. The intimate setting of The Hamilton Live only enhanced this connection, making the evening feel like a celebration among friends. The crowd couldn't help but sing, clap, and be cheerfully immersed in the band's infectious energy. The band's light rig was another highlight of the evening, providing a vibrantly colored stage for the Kitchen Dwellers to perform.

The Kitchen Dwellers welcomed Sicard Hollow–a Nashville-based psychedelic punk-grass band– as their opening act. The four-piece band matched the Kitchen Dwellers' high energy with their soaring fiddle and funky slap bass solos. Members of Sicard Hollow–Matt Rennick (fiddle) and Alex King (guitar/vocals)–joined the Kitchen Dwellers for the fantastic cover of "Big Mon," adding more psychedelic layers to the Dwellers' signature galaxy grass sound.

Changing the Game: Good Kid is an Even Greater Band

Creative minds, savvy programmers, and an unwavering love for music, Good Kid transcends the realm of an average rock band. The ensemble of remarkable musicians shine as a beacon of creativity continuing to push artistic boundaries with introspective lyrics with heartwarming instrumentals. Through musician ingenuity, mastery of traditional rock elements, and insatiable hunger for pushing boundaries, Good Kid is garnering widespread acclaim from fans across the globe.

Hailing from Toronto Canada, the band first took flight through studying at the University of Toronto. The five-piece group consists of lead vocalist Nick Frosst, drummer Jon Kereliuk, bassist Michael Kozakov, and guitarists David Wood and Jacob Tsafatinos. Since their formation eight years ago, Good Kid has soared to exceptional heights, exceeding the conventionalism of artistry.

Last month, the band released its long-awaited third EP, Good Kid 3, featuring six tracks sprinkled with each member’s unique touch. Climbing the charts from the EP is the infectious, upbeat, and charming single No Time To Explain. Since its release, the single has surged across TikTok, rising within viral trends. Hot on its heels is Mimi’s Delivery Service, a light-hearted track accumulating over 100,000 streams within 24 hours of its release.

“We're used to releasing songs and having, you know, our core fans being very excited about them. And always our band consistently has been growing over eight years. But these new numbers are very… I can't really explain it,” said bassist Michael Kozakov, recalling the day when Mimi’s Delivery Service skyrocketed.

“I think it's really amazing to see so many people excited about a song that you release. Because at the end of the day, you're just sitting in your apartment looking at a phone and to imagine 100,000 other people having heard this thing today, I don't know. Can you imagine 100,000 people in your head? I can't.”

Not only has Good Kid garnered substantial traction through their herd of listeners, but is now attracting eyes across the Youtube community. In a viral video from acclaimed Youtuber, Mr. Beast, Good Kid’s arsenal of hits stowed in the background. The band’s philosophy to spread joy through their music proves itself through their decision to be DCMA-free, allowing their content to be shared by the millions.

Outside of the YouTube community, Good Kid takes pride in their far-reaching tight-knit fan base. Since the band’s origination, they cherished their core in-person community, where individuals would gather to share their love for music and fellowship. However, when the pandemic struck, confining listeners to their homes, band members swiftly generated a different approach- the launch of their Discord chat. Once powered and running, it quickly developed into a community, where band members and fans would chat, establish friendships, and host events.

Teetering between fan-held and band-held, different individuals alternate crafting functions. One particular beloved gathering is Green Room, where members post song recommendations for Good Kid to review and hold a discussion session. Although the chat derived from the band’s discography, it now encases a vast music hub.

“We really love our Discord community,” said Kozakov. “So we constantly think about like, what's something cool we could do for them?”

Blending their extensive love for their community and outside passions, Good Kid created Ghost Kid’s Revenge, an interactive video game for followers to connect with one of the band’s adjacent hobbies, gaming. Before its creation, producer and drummer Jon Kereliuk was creating 8-bit music pieces while guitarist Jacob Tsafatinos was programming video games. Combining their talents, along with the band’s other masterminds, the game was born.

Cleverly, players must participate in an internet scavenger hunt across Good Kid’s social media, streaming platforms, and other bases in order to find clues to rescue the band’s staple internet mascot, Nomu Kid. The game presents itself as an original, ingenious, and artful complimentary to the already immense network.

“I think that's that's kind of the theme of our band. We all have a lot of passions outside of music, and we constantly try to encourage each other and figure out ways to incorporate them into the band operation as well,” said Kozakov reflecting on their growth.

Now, the band geared up for a North American tour, zigzagging across the U.S. and Canada. On May 20th at Union Stage, the band will debut its newest EP in DC. However, if unable to attend their in-person whirlwind show, enthusiasts can tune into Discord and Twitch streams for sneak peeks of unreleased songs. Hunkering down in their songwriting element, Good Kid is mobilizing a wave of additional anthems.

JRAD Plays a Sensational Sunset Show at Baltimore’s Pier Six Pavilion

On Friday, May 12, 2023, Joe Russo's Almost Dead (and lovingly referred to by many a fan as simply JRAD) took the stage at the picturesque Pier Six Amphitheater in Baltimore, Maryland, where they unleashed an electrifying performance at one of the most beautiful venues in the DMV. Located directly on Baltimore's Inner Harbor, Pier Six offers glorious sunset views on the waterfront for almost every show, creating the perfect atmosphere for an evening of live music outside on the lawn.

Dave Dreiwitz and Scott Metzger

Known for their unique take on the Grateful Dead's music, this supergroup of talented musicians brought the iconic songs to life in a nostalgic and refreshingly innovative way. From the moment the band kicked off the show with a spacey jam leading into "Here Comes Sunshine," it was clear that this would be another JRAD show to remember. The nearly telekinetic chemistry between the band members was palpable, with Joe Russo's thunderous drumming driving the rhythm and providing a solid foundation for the rest of the band to build upon. The crowd instantly locked into the jam, dancing and swaying to the infectious grooves.

Guitarists Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger displayed their musical prowess as they traded dueling guitar solos throughout the night–including on "Terrapin Station," a highlight of the evening. Their ability to capture the essence of Jerry Garcia's playing while adding their unique flair was nothing short of impressive. Each note they played resonated with the audience, evoking a sense of nostalgia while using the Grateful Dead's catalog as a springboard for experimental improvisation. In addition, Bassist Dave Dreiwitz and keyboardist Marco Benevento performed flawlessly, providing a solid backbone for the band’s improvisation. Dreiwitz's thunderous bass lines were felt deep in the chest, while Benevento's virtuosic keyboard work added depth and euphoric highs to the songs.

One of the night's standout moments came during the extended jam in "The Other One." The band launched into a borderline-heavy metal version of this Dead classic before seamlessly converging into a gentle and psychedelic "Bird Song," showing the band's mastery of improvisational dynamics. The crowd responded with thunderous applause and cheers, clearly appreciating the band's ability to take the Dead's music to new heights while staying true to its roots. JRAD closed out the second set with an epic "Morning Dew" that left everyone wanting more. The band obliged with an encore of "Casey Jones" that left the crowd dancing and singing as people walked to the parking lot.

Kali Uchis Brings Flaming Passion, Elegance, and Grandeur to the Anthem

For the first time, a blazing red sunrise cast light across the inside of The Anthem on Tuesday, May 9th. As the burning radiance grew brighter, gasps turned into delighted shrieks, alluding to only one thing- the onsite of Kali Uchi’s Red Moon In Venus DC debut.

Six dancers carried a chair hidden by elegant mahogany feathers, hiding the singer until a seventh dancer’s announcement parted its wings, igniting two blasts of confetti. There, engulfed in bright red and yellow lights stood Kali Uchis, in a shimmering red two-piece outfit atop the white polished staircase. After the delivery of her microphone, she kicked off the night with Telepatía, sparking another round of shrills.

Born and bred in Alexandria, Virginia, Uchis shone light on her roots, mentioning her upbringing in the DMV. “I don’t know how many of you know this but this is technically a hometown show for me,” said Uchis, promoting a ferocious uproar from fans. Recalling her youth, she seamlessly transitioned into Melting from her first pivotal project Por Vida.

The set’s color palette bounced between blue starry night skies, to bright pink, yellow, and red lava lamp-like visuals, and of course gleaming greyish-white moons. Each song uniquely encompassed an elaborate visual reel, captivating all eyes gazing upon it. Kali Uchis brought the perfect blend of charm, poise, and electricity through her spellbinding aura.

The Anthem transformed into an arena for the night, veiled in astounding production, brilliant choreography, and exquisite decor, paired with nearly 30 songs squeezed into 75 minutes. Although the tour was mainly centered around Red Moon In Venus, Uchis painted fans a rainbow of her discography, showcasing songs from every album.

Tyler the Creator, made two invisible appearances, once at the beginning of the show during See You Again and at the end for After The Storm, where raindrops fell across the screen. Amongst a multitude of viral hits, she incorporated tunes from 10% with Kaytranda, Get You with Daniel Caesar, and Fue Mejor with SZA. Illuminated in red fluorescent lights, she encapsulated the building with a breathtaking live performance of the newest single Moonlight.

The smooth rotations between lyrics in English and Spanish proved her extensive talents and position as a staple generational artist within R&B, soul, and hip hop. One segment of her concert featured a merry-go-round of reggaeton covers including Lorna’s Papi Chulo, El General’s No Me Trates De Engañar, and Salvaje by Don Omar and Héctor el Father.

Fan’s extensive love for Uchis was returned by her, as she paused to tend to listeners, even throwing water bottles from the stage. At one point, a fan was plucked from the crowd, sat on stage in Uchis’ throne, and dazzled by the queen herself. Heart to hearts were shared between listeners and her, as she offered insightful life advice before letting the music articulate similar themes.

Showers of delicate beauty fell on listeners' eyes and ears once more as Wish You Roses rang out. Enthralled in a dream-like state, fans hurled lyrics back to the stage as screens filled with ethereal images of flower fields. Soon after, a metaphoric shower brushed the stage and dancers picked up Uchis to wrap up her set- or so fans thought. Chimes of a prompting encore brought her back minutes later to officially end in lights of cool tones for the Blue finale.

Before Kali Uchis shook the stage her opener RAYE graced fans with her bubbly, down-to-earth presence, also relaying profound advice. Correspondingly, she too had a regal performance, undertaking the stage theme of classic elegance. Dressed completely in white, RAYE and her baking band played a wide array of songs, including Ice Cream Man., Black Masacara, and of course, viral hit Escapism.

The evening’s two performances presented a perfect mixture of passion, with mesmerizing range and gut-wrenching tracks. It was an empowering night for the audience, to have their souls stirred by powerful anthems and hearts tenderly caressed. Per usual, Uchis’ awe-striking aura and spinning whirlwind of hits left listeners in a gripping trance. Now, fans can only keep their fingers crossed that she will return home in the near future. Come back soon, the DMV misses you.

Shadowgrass Gets Their Bluegrass On At Pearl Street Warehouse

Shadowgrass–an incredibly talented up-and-coming bluegrass band–took the stage at the District Wharf’s Pearl Street Warehouse on a warm, humid evening on May 7, 2023, during the band’s first headlining tour.

Pearl Street’s rolled-up garage door-style windows allowed the music to drift onto the patio, and as Shadowgrass took the stage, a woman from the crowd called out, “Welcome to D.C.!” which brought smiles to the band’s faces. From the first notes from their instruments rang out, the crowd hollered and stomped their feet along with the thumping bass line.

Composed of Kyser George (guitar), Luke Morris (mandolin), Clay Russell (banjo), Evan Campfield  (bass), and Madison Morris (fiddle), Shadowgrass quickly rose to prominence last summer after a series of Instagram reels they posted went viral–including one video of an impromptu performance with Billy Strings. The future is exceptionally bright for this group of young musicians. While Shadowgrass is young (Kyser George is so young that he has Xs on his hands, showing he can’t even buy a beer at the bar.), they are incredibly talented as individuals and as a group. Each member of the band is a developing virtuoso, with each one more impressive than the last. When they improvise, they are spectacular listeners–remaining patient and letting jams slowly and organically develop to a euphoric peak. Still, they also know when to stomp on the gas to get the crowd going during those high-test bluegrass jams.

Shadowgrass showed off their chops on a variety of songs over two sets, including bluegrass standards–like Freeborn Man and Old Home Place, classic rock covers–like the Allman Brothers’ Midnight Rider and Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams, and modern classics–like the viral Midnight in Harlem by the Tedeschi Trucks Band and Crazy by Gnarls Barkley. They also impressively covered two songs off David Grisman Quintet’s self-titled album: 16/16 and E.M.D. The Quintet’s signature gypsy-jazz bluegrass style is notoriously intricate and challenging to play, and these young pickers tackled it with the precision and grace of seasoned veterans. They closed out the second set with a fiery original called Carl’s Breakdown, a fun and upbeat tune about the banjo player Clay Russell’s lost pet turtle.

(L-R) Clay Russell, Kyser George, Evan Campfield

(L-R) Clay Russell, Kyser George, Evan Campfield

Shadowgrass is definitely a band to keep an eye out for in the future. They have the musical chops to go the distance, and some of the best bluegrass musicians in the scene–Billy Strings and the Infamous Stringdusters’ Jeremy Garrett–have been supporting their blossoming career.   If you love bluegrass, watch their tour schedule for dates around DC and the DMV because it will become increasingly hard to see them as their popularity soars.

Bennu Byrd’s In Rare Form Album Review: A Lively Addition to DMV Music

Female rapper Bennu Byrd blends the traditional sounds of hip-hop with electronic dance music and DC’s signature Go-Go style. Previously known for her hit singles Miss Mary Mack, 12-22-22, and Reppin, Byrd is now gearing up to release her second album In Rare Form. The new album showcases her arsenal of heavy hitters, featuring a plethora of beats that coincide perfectly with her thought-provoking lyrics.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C. Byrd blends her roots with newly found artistic styles to form creative, authentic, and rich songs. Coincidentally, Byrd was born on July 16th, the same day Washington DC was founded, making her a perfect representation of the area’s music art forms. Growing up, Byrd immersed herself in the genre of hip hop and poetry writing, crafting astounding strings of words at a young age. These seeds along with dedication helped her plant and grow a miraculous album.

The 15 track In Rare Form stretches across the bounds of hip hop, sprinkling in echoes of various other genres. Within the album, Byrd demonstrates her mastery of the art with hard-hitting flows, captivating lyrics, and memorable melodies. Throughout the album, she speaks on her life experiences, real-world issues, and hike to fame. Each song represents a different side of Byrd, giving listeners a taste of what living in her world entails.

Going from front to back, the album starts with the intro Reflection of God. The track begins by announcing the “millennial soul-music” listeners are about to tune into, providing a hint of Byrd’s authentic twist. The initial Go-Go beat instantly draws ears to her roots and signature sound. Next up is Stay Regal, mentioning the theme of the album, “I’m in rare form unrestricted moves / living in my purpose unpredictable”.

Bennu Byrd - In Rare Form

In Rare Form - Track List

In songs like Top Off, Undressed, and Reach 4 Da Sky, Byrd’s zestful energy is apparent. However, Love Me presents her melodious side, with Lesa Campbell’s soothing voice paired with Byrd’s gentle lyrics. Teetering between subdued and lively is Heart Vs Brain, a more upbeat yet reflective approach on the confusion of love.

Hard-hitters Throw Away The Key and Incognegro exhibit Byrd’s ear-catching ability to relay striking messages. Byrd’s witness stands starkly in front of listeners, drawing them directly to clever rhymes with clear meanings. What immediately stands out about these two tracks is Byrd’s keen thinking affixed to her charming voice.

Bennu Bryd - In Rare Form

Her anthem Byrd is Da Word features another lighthearted Go Go beat. Showcasing her electric aura, this track perfectly displays Byrd’s bodacious personality and fervent attitude. Towards the end of the album is Big Steppin’, a tune expressing Byrd’s aspirations for a luxurious future lifestyle. Wrapping up, Byrd ends with outro Sweet Tooth with Dior Ashley Brown, highlighting a range of instruments, vocals, and tones linked together in one masterpiece.

The skits and interludes on the album, Really Byrd!?, Grammy Talk, and What U Been Working On? show an inside look at Byrd’s creativity, perspective, and personality. These paired with the other tracks, give listeners a wholesome viewpoint on who Byrd is and her determination to dominate the modern hip hop scene.

MerleFest 35 - A destination worth the trip!
Festival Reviews

MerleFest Dreaming: One Of America’s Premier Roots Festivals Is Worth The Road Trip

This year marked the 35th edition of MerleFest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. This legendary festival was founded in 1988 in memory of Eddy Merle Watson as a fundraiser for Wilkes Community College and to celebrate and is a celebration of “traditional plus” music.  Traditional plus is a unique mix of genres based on the traditional, roots-oriented sounds of the Appalachian region, including bluegrass and old-time music, and expanded to include Americana, country, blues, rock, and many other styles. Held each year at the end of April, MerleFest is the world's biggest and most prestigious roots / traditional music festival. Their motto is "Music, Moments, and Memories." For each of its four days, this festival lived up to and surpassed every expectation of this festival. It is an exceptionally joyous experience that feels like a hometown Fourth of July street festival full of community warmth, pride, authenticity, and southern hospitality.

Driving through downtown Wilkesboro, the entire town has opened up to welcome and fully embrace the festival and its guests. At MerleFest, you will experience you will find something for everyone - a considerable kid zone, a vast food hall, a vendor and a craft zone, and twelve stages. For those who are hungry, down-home cooking will settle your stomach, including delicious hand pies and deep-fried pickles. There are numerous instruments to try out, with instrument manufacturers present to sit down and start picking with any fellow festival goers. MerleFest breathes the full spectrum of music, and attendees will be gobsmacked by the number of hard and soft cases people have strapped to their backs.

Scott and Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers and from Concord, NC, summed up the MerleFest experience best when they headlined Friday's performances. They talked of how they came as children to the festival, saying they wanted to be a performer one day and "get in on that." However, once they started performing at here, they soon realized that the line separating a performer from a patron was minimal. When you attend MerleFest, you are part of the whole experience and how special it is. We could not agree more with their observation and distilled why we loved every moment and every aspect of this festival.

Everyone at MerleFest brought their own instruments so they could enjoy some pickin' onsite

It is not just residents of North Carolina that want to "get in on MerleFest." During this festival, we met people from all corners of the country - Alaska, California, Louisiana, and Maine. People worldwide also traveled to Wilkesboro as we met roots fans from Switzerland, Germany, and Finland. Not only will you find people from all over the world, but people of all ages at the festivals - from young adults to empty nesters to grandparents alongside their grandchildren.

Everyone at MerleFest brought their own instruments so they could enjoy some pickin' onsite

This festival is amongst the first major music festivals on the calendar, where bands try to make their mark to make their national presence known, and it is where one discovers the next big act. Last year Fireside Collective was considered by many a bust-out appearance. They quickly became one of the hottest acts on the festival circuit with spectacular appearances at Charm City Bluegrass and DelFest - but seen first at MerleFest.

In the years to come, be on the lookout for fourteen-year-old mandolin virtuoso Wyatt Ellis.  Bella White also captivated the audience between The Travelin' McCoury & Friends and Tanya Tucker. White was so joyous after her performance, she was dancing with a bandmate with giddy delight. Lastly, be on the lookout for Bee Taylor, who entranced the audience on Friday night with a magical set between Marcus King and The Avett Brothers.

For years music lovers throughout the DMV would talk about the various regional festivals. In particular, as we traded festival stories like baseball trading cards, one festival always came up - MerleFest. Many heard of the festival and its unforgettable performances and tales. For many, we found this North Carolina festival to be just outside of our reach as if an imaginary line and radius had been drawn around the greater Washington DC Metro Area. It seemed so close, and while the performances and allure were so compelling, we would rarely find anyone who had made the journey to Wilkesboro. Everyone told us how this festival was on their bucket list, they planned to go there and heard great things, but still had yet to attend. For those few individuals and artists we spoke with, their faces lit up when they spoke about their experience here.

This year MerleFest held a 100th-year birthday celebration for namesake Merle Watson's father - music legend Doc Watson. The lineup and energy were so compelling we had to make the journey to Wilkesboro, North Carolina. For all the imaginary boundaries and notions that the festival is just a little too far away from Washington, DC, we are here to tell you that it is within your grasp and worth the trip.

Follow the rainbow to get to MerleFest!

Follow the rainbow to get to MerleFest!

Wilkesboro, North Carolina, is remarkably easy to get to from Washington, DC. Although this festival is nearly 380 miles away from Washington, DC, directions and driving are simple with picturesque highway driving - take I-66 out to Front Royal, VA; hop onto I-81 down past Roanoke, VA; head to I-77 south to Wilkesboro, NC; and get on US-421 straight into the heart of Wilkesboro.

As you leave the metro area, you see the clutter, hustle, and traffic of Washington, DC, evaporate into the background. When heading towards the Shenandoah Valley, you will see morning clouds gently rolling over and clinging to the luscious landscapes. The way that city life falls away and gives way to the splendor of the countryside by the time you turn onto I-81, the picturesque Shenandoah guides your journey down south for 218 miles. Depending on the onset of Spring, your journey will see colors besides green - be on the lookout for spring fireworks and colors, including bright yellow bushes and vibrant pink Eastern Redbud trees. If you want to break up the trip, we recommend breaking up the journey with a stop at Devil's Backbone's Basecamp in Lexington, Virginia, for food and beverages. You can also stop at natural wonders like Natural Bridge and Luray Caverns in southern Virginia.

Follow the rainbow to get to MerleFest!

Follow the rainbow to get to MerleFest!

We found our way to Wilkesboro Campground, more affectionately known as SewerFest. Not only is this campground spacious and beautiful, but during MerleFest, it provides its buses that run nonstop to and from the campground directly to the festival's entrance. SewerFest has accommodations for both car and RV camping, and nothing is overlooked. At SewerFest, you will find all the standard campground accommodations, plus a full-service kitchen serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and post-concert food. With great delight, you can order a coffee and biscuit for breakfast (vegetarian options are available). If you want to avoid setting up a tent after driving to Wilkesboro, we recommend Dancin' Dave's Festival Camping. Reserve your camping spot, tell Dancin' Dave where your site is, and arrive at a spacious tent set up with a cot and chair included.  We will note that the one thing Wilkesboro may not have is adequate hotel accommodations. It has only a few hotels which are booked almost immediately after becoming available.

Music poured out of every corner of the Wilkes Community College Campus for four magical and music-filled days. This enormous festival has twelve official stages but many more impromptu performance areas dotting the festival grounds. During the festival, we affectionately said that this festival has more stages than any of us have fingers or toes.

A packed Hillside Stage

A packed Hillside Stage

There were many memorable moments at this year's event. Probably more than anyone could remember and spread out over the plethora of stages. The following list is in no particular order:

  • Tommy Emmanuel's performance. His performance included some notes clocking in at 50 notes per bar, performing an indescribable "American Tune" by Paul Simon only to be topped off by a breathtaking "Amazing Grace."
  • The torrential, if not epic, storm that occurred during Brothers of a Feather's performance as they serenaded us with some of their most beloved acoustic songs by The Black Crowes.
  • DC Metro Area artist Yasmin Williams' performance on the Hillside Stage where this unique guitarist produced a roboust wall-of-sound out of a single instrument.
  • The Album Hour hosted by The Waybacks covering The Who's Who's Next with an all-star cast. Members included Sam Bush, Jim Lauderdale, Celia Woodsmith of Della Mae, and Ali McGuirk.
  • A bust-out, jaw-dropping, and perhaps career-defining performance by Bee Taylor.
  • The intimate hometown vibe and performance by The Avett Brothers.
  • Mando Mania, where the best mandolin performers and their priceless instruments are collectively assembled under one roof.
  • World-class performances, spontaneous sit-ins, and unforgettable collaborations from artists and ensembles spanning multiple stages. This included The Travelin McCourys & Friends, where living legends Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, and Jim Lauderdale all performed together. The MerleFest Bluegrass All-Stars also consisted of many more living legends.

The one notable performance that stood out and was talked about for days afterward by everyone we spoke to was The Black Opry Revue. This all-star ensemble performed passionately and sang about some uncomfortable and necessary truths, which were well received and embraced by the audience.

Performances at this festival are a rare confluence, collaboration, and sit-ins by musicians you rarely would see together at a single festival, let alone see perform on the same stage together. One-in-a-lifetime lineups are one of the things that make this festival so unique. Where else will you see Sam Bush lean over and whisper into Jerry Douglas's ear and share a laugh?  Then, seconds later, Sam Bush shares yet another joke with Peter Rowan.  This festival specializes in authentic, heartfelt, and once-in-a-lifetime performances and interactions.

For all these reasons and many more will always add MerleFest to the festivals we must attend. We strongly encourage you to come- it is worth the drive, and it is worth the priceless memories you will take away from Wilkesboro, NC. This festival is within your reach - it just requires a little more time and gas than it takes to get to other festivals. The priceless experiences and cherished moments are truly and indescribably worth it.

We are already giddy with anticipation for MerleFest 36, which will take place from April 25th to 28th, 2024.  We hope to see you in downtown Wilkesboro and beside the campsite fires and pickin' parties at nearby campgrounds, and most of all, sharing some priceless moments with you at MerleFest!

Must Do's

  • Album Hour, hosted by The Waybacks on the Hillside Stage, is a must-see performance every year.
  • Try to attend late-night Dance Hall performances. These performances put the dance in Dance Hall. Late-night performances not to be missed include Scythian, Donna & The Buffalo.
  • Most musicians, except headliners, will appear on multiple stages, numerous days, and sometimes several times on the same day. If you miss the opportunity to see them because of a conflict, you will have another time to see them perform.
  • If you have an instrument and you want to jam or pick at the festival or campground, then bring it.
  • Check the Autograph Booth to meet with your favorite musician, have your merchandise signed, and get a once-in-a-lifetime selfie taken.

Special Notes:

  • If you see a T-Shirt you like on Thursday, then be sure to purchase it Thursday!  Some of the best T-shirts are printed in limited quantities, and if you do not buy them on Thursday, they will probably sell out.
  • No alcohol is available on the grounds of this festival.

Let's face it, in today's modern age, we need some technology to make our experiences better.  With large festivals such as MerleFest that contain so many incredible performances, autograph experiences, and workshops, we need a mobile application to plot our our festival experience.  While we fully support being footloose and letting the day evolve organically, we also need a system to alert us to breaking news or evolvign weather conditions.  That being said, please use the following links to download your official MerleFest mobile application.

2023 National Cannabis Fest: Smoke, Storm, and Songs

On Saturday, April 21st, a bubble of thick smoke engulfed the district. “I can’t see shit in here with all that smoke,” said 2 Chainz wafting air away from his face. Although the music was loud that night, the bud may have been louder. One can only expect the National Cannabis Fest to have a full-fledged arsenal of the dankest products.

To celebrate 2023’s Earth Day and the seventh annual NCF, attendees gathered to set tree ablaze, but of course, the environmentally friendly kind. At 12:00 am sharp, festival gates swung open leading a stampede of cannabis lovers racing towards the entrance. RFK stadium grounds were buzzing with enthusiasm as attendees swarmed the various scattered tents.

For the first time, the festival housed a Psycadelics Pavillion, where leading activists and experts educated the crowd on the latest psychedelic discoveries, observations, and breakthroughs. Vendors also participated in showcasing and even selling magic mushrooms at select tents. Not only were attendees great admirers of psilocybin but so was 2 Chainz, giving a shout-out to “anyone on the shrooms besides [him]” before beginning to see double.

High and mighty stood a tent labeled Grower’s World, where the behind-the-scenes of bud-making was revealed. The landmark location held three main attractions: the Marketplace where the best soil, seeds, and equipment lay for purchase; the Grow School Stage with experts speaking on residential and commercial cultivation; and the National Cannabis Championship Pavillion where contest finalists, judges, and sponsors of NCC hung out to chat with attendees.

Inside Growers World at the 2023 National Cannabis Festival

To the left of the growth hub were a plethora of other attractions including the Policy Pavillion, discussing cannabis legalization and policy, and the Culture Pavillion, highlighting the impacts of cannabis on our culture. Just above lay the Wellness Pavillion, which set out to discuss the medicinal benefits of cannabis with special speakers, and the Culinary Pavillion, where conversations and live demons of cooking with cannabis set to take place. Sandwiched between Wellness and Culinary was Wrestling (geographically speaking, of course) featuring the showdown between the Night Owl and Cory Bush.

Everyone was in great spirits near the Munchie Zone

The north star for baked individuals to satisfy their hunger, aka the Munchies Zone, scattered the northwest wing of the festival grounds. From DC slices to Jerk @ Nite and everything in between, individuals could appease any arisen craving. There were even vegan and gluten-free options available to accommodate people of all walks and diets.

Inclusivity seemed to be a theme for the fest, covering all dietary needs, special lounges for veterans and members of the LGBTQ+ community, and a wide array of weed products for all consumers. The atmosphere was immaculate.

Planning seemed to be fool-proof, with rain or shine conditions explicitly stated on all promotional advertising. However, just two hours into the event, storm clouds rolled over the stadium. Just before Cumbia Heights set when Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton was speaking, before a drop of rain could fall, an announcement was made that festival goers would have to evacuate the premises immediately due to a storm watch.

First, patrons were relocated under a bridge, slightly on the outskirts of the festival grounds. Faces shifted from smiles to frowns. Individuals lined the walls of the tunnel, propping up chairs in circles. “Five dollar prerolls!” A voice rang out, holding a bag of joints in the air. Purchased goodie bags were opened and spilled onto paper. Lighters clicked and smoke once again filled the air. Murmurs of disappointment dispersed from group to group, as everyone eagerly waited to be let back in. 30 minutes later as the rain slammed the pavement, festival workers motioned the hopeful crowd back towards the entrance, just to be shoved through an emergency exit.

Confusion and doubt proved most present, with individuals questioning what to do next. By the time patrons began the journey back to the metro and their cars, hail was shooting down from the sky. Groups huddled under trees for several minutes before waving the white flag and departing. The only hope was to consistently check social media updates from NCF. Some stuck around in their cars for hours while others immediately fled the scene.

The planned 2023 Cannabis Festival Lineup - What Could Have Been

Eventually, a breakthrough update landed on the NCF website at 4:35 pm, stating the last three music acts would perform from 8:30-11:00 pm, with reentry at 8:00. Despite their notion to monitor for weather updates, the festival commenced two hours after the storm had passed.

At 8:00 pm sharp, the parking lots swarmed with cars shoving their way between one another to match minutes with expenditure and catch the last few sets. By this hour, the entire local lineup of Cumbia Heights, Foots X Coles, Everyday Everybody, and Backyard Band were cut, as well as exhibitors’ schedules. However, a multitude of vendors marched their way back to the ground, rapidly propping up tents and tables with goods.

Somberness hung in the air like an invisible cloud as attendees made a silent walk back to the check-in point. Yet, once Free Nationals hit the stage, joy dispersed throughout the crowd. The soothing guitar rifts, captivating synths, and enchanting vocals caressed ears of listeners, pulling them out of their depressive spell. In no time the crowd was back on their feet, swaying to the sweet sounds emerging from the stage.

Juicy J

Around 9:30, Juicy J emerged, leading the crowd to push forward and close the gap between the people and the barricade. Hoots and hollers exploded from mouths. “Say SHUT THE FUCK UP,” yelled Juicy. The crowd immediately mimicked him. “If you smoke weed put your hands in the air.” Arms flung up towards the sky.

Juicy J’s set single-handedly hauled the hype back to the grounds. Performing all his classics, Juicy rapped all of his classics, from Thinking with My Dick, to SDAB, to Power Glide with fans emitting excitement left and right. During his performance of Slob on My Knob Juicy brought out Trey Drizzle, who rapped the first half with Juicy finishing the second.

After a brief intermission, 2 Chainz struck the stage prompting another round of screams from attendees. Opening with No Lie, fans immediately hurled lyrics back at him, bopping and shaking their heads back and forth. “Make some mother fuckin’ noise for yourselves,” said 2 Chainz post song. Soon after, he rapped his verse in No Problem by Chance the Rapper with the signer on stage enthusiastically dancing while signing.

In honor of celebrating cannabis, 2 Chainz lit up a joint midway through his set. “We came here to get high and have a good time,” said 2 Chainz. He continued, “I pray everybody gets some head before they go to sleep tonight.” Shortly after, he began rapping Lil Wayne’s Rich as Fuck before announcing that the two have a project release in six weeks.

Wrapping up with the classics, 2 Chainz performed F**kin’ Problems, It’s A Vibe, Good Drank, and Bandz A Make Her Dance, giving a shout-out to Juicy J who performed the song earlier. He then encouraged the crowd to shine a light on a “birthday person”, to celebrate the birthdays of anyone attending the fest, perfectly tying into his last song of the night, Birthday Song.

Despite the rocky start to the 7th annual National Cannabis Fest, the night ended with pure power and exuberance. Although only three performances took place, each artist electrified the stage with whirlwind sets. Last-minute sales were exchanged between vendors and exiting individuals. Hopeful in 2024, the celebration of cannabis will bring nothing but sunny skies, weed supplies, and good times.

Where You Find The Next Big Thing – Appaloosa Festival Announces Their 2023 Lineup

With the music industry back in full swing, the 2023 Outdoor Festival Season looks to be a banner year for live music season. Festival announcements and updates have been popping up left and right almost daily.

Late last week, Appaloosa Festival announced its lineup for its 2023 edition. We have been eagerly anticipating and keeping a keen eye on the lineup announcement from Appaloosa Festival since we attended the 2022 edition.

If your heart soars to the sound of roots music - then look no further because you will love the Appaloosa Festival. This roots music festival is held at Skyline Ranch Resort Front Royal, Virginia, just a short drive from the Nation's Capital. This festival offers a full spectrum of roots music, including Bluegrass, Celtic, Americana, and Indie-Folk.

The creative force behind the festival are hometown heros Scythian. This national touring act spends much of its year traveling throughout the United States, captivating audiences from coast to coast. While on the road, the band keeps a close eye out and takes notice of burgeoning acts, and can spot these diamonds in the rough up close.

Over the years, the festival has hosted some of America's most talented and well-recognized musicians well before they became household names. In years past, Appaloosa Festival has hosted Fireside Collective, Mandoline Orange, Mipso, Sierra Hull, Molly Tuttle, and Billy Strings.   Last year's headliner - Molly Tuttle - went on to win the Grammy for "Best Bluegrass Album." So keen is Scythian's eye for spotting talent they have embraced this "festival superpower" by stating that Appaloosa "Is Where You Find The Next Big Thing." This year's lineup is no exception.

Appaloosa Festival 2023

Beyond the compelling music and spectacular lineup, this is an opportunity to enjoy Labor Day weekend with your family in a low-key, family-friendly atmosphere with workshops and child-oriented performances. Moreso, you may just find a headlining act performing for your children under a small tent or have musical workshops by the stars of tomorrow. This festival offers plenty of fun for a quick trip out of town after re-adjusting to back-to-school schedules and traffic patterns. A kid's zone, beer garden, craft vendors, and four stages are sure to entertain everyone.

Scythian is not the only one with keen eyes - you will notice that the 2023 lineup has a 'To Be Announced' placeholder. Knowing Appaloosa's knack for spotting and signing talent, there is little doubt that upcoming lineup editions will make fans exceptionally happy and grateful when those last acts are announced.

Interviews

Legions of Questions with Max Davies from Kitchen Dwellers

Ahead of their return to DC at the end of the month playing at The Hamilton, DC Music Reviews' favorite inquisitive interviewer, Karin McLaughlin, got to chat with guitar player Max Davies to see what the band has been up to this winter, learn about their start at a very unique venue, and see what's on the horizon as temperatures rise and we head into the fun of festival season.  As always, DCMR pulled some pretty good tidbits during the conversation - read the edited version below and be sure to grab tickets for the show!  See 'Performance Details' below or just skip to the good part.

DCMR: Okay. So, you know, doing research and people that read about Kitchen Dwellers that maybe aren't familiar and kind of looking up stuff about you guys – it labels you as being from Bozeman, but we know that you're mixed from Alaska, Colorado and beyond. I also read something that made me laugh, because I actually bartend two days a week at an American Legion and saw that you guys got your start in American Legion actually, to be specific Post 14. So I definitely want to hear a little bit about that, mainly because I wish to hell my post was cool enough to have a band like you guys come and play there and maybe I can figure out how to make that happen.

MAX: Well, we were definitely a kind of an odd group of characters that would play there. It was funny because there was this local guy who had to be like 90 years old, and he would come in and you never knew when he was going to show up and he would just walk in with his guitar and his guitar strap like not even a case I don't think and he would just be like, “Hey guys, I'm playing with you tonight,” and we were just like, “Great, sweet!”   It was a really fun place to be able to cut our teeth and there was a lot of different groups of characters that you could find in there. I remember that I think anytime that we played there, the bar always just crushed sales. So yeah, that's always a good thing and there, it's right downtown, so that’s another plus.

DCMR: So out of curiosity, what was the 90 year old mystery musicians go-to song to play?

MAX: I honestly don’t know - every one that he chose was good. It was probably some sort of Merle Haggard song that I was just like, “Alright, I'm gonna learn how to play these chords with you,” and we did.

DCMR: Well you mentioned snow earlier but right now in DC, the Cherry Blossoms are in half bloom, and they don't know what to do, really, because I think Mother Nature might be drunk. We've got one day where it's 60 degrees and the next day, it's 30, but we're finally getting into the Spring and Summer tour season and you guys have one hell of a schedule coming up!

You've got some real cool stuff: Delfest, which we've all seen you at and you get to do a late night with Stringdusters.  You also have Sweetwater 420, and 4848 in July. The weekend at the Cave, a new Festival at the Caverns, all kinds of stuff. So what are you doing to prepare? What are you most looking forward to? How do you stay sane when you're doing all of these things?

MAX: Well, we're definitely looking forward to the whole entire tour and everything coming up this summer, we've kind of had just a week or two at home, which is great because we just wrapped up some winter time festivals and you know it’s just the circus kind of never ends - it just keeps going and you try to really take your downtime when you can. Also, when you're on the road doing it, you gotta make sure it’s in a way that keeps you sane. Everyone in our band has just kind of invested in these hand espresso bean grinders and it's the little things like that - you got your neck pillow, you got your espresso grinder, and that should help get you through some long drives and long day.

We are really excited for the Caves Fest - I've seen some photos of that place and it just looks really cool. And 4848 - we've been wanting to play 4848 For a long time.

DCMR: You guys are basically jumping right from Winter right into Summer - I saw you guys played at Winter Wondergrass Steamboat, which is another good one - I love Steamboat - how was that?

MAX: Oh, it was it was so great. I mean, it just gets better every single year!  They do such a good job at that festival and I think they do a really good job of booking too - there's always the mainstay acts like Greensky or the Dusters and Leftover Salmon.  You have the same people every year which is great because it’s a sweet community vibe. I feel like they do a really good job of booking some kind of music outside of that box as well and that always makes it really fun.

It just couldn’t have been a better weekend. It was either sunny and beautiful out or it was snowing and for our set, it was like crystals falling out of the sky, it wasn't snowing very heavily and there was no there was no wind. It was like the snow was almost falling slower than normal  it was so beautiful and with the lights, it looks super cool. The lights really make a difference if you play at daytime or nighttime when it's snowing out there because it's like a crystal globe - it's awesome!  Plus, everyone is all bundled up which makes it more fun and then there’s the skiing on top of it, so it's just such a fun weekend.

DCMR: Speaking of WWG, I remember the year that I went, seeing Lindsay Lou, who is always a staple pretty much at that festival and you guys just got to do what looked like a real fun tour with her. I watched a video of  I might have like melted if I was at the show where you guys had her on stage and covered Fruition’s Santa Fe which is probably one of my all time favorite songs.

Being an all-male band, what's it like to introduce a female presence and energy and be able to play stuff like that, as opposed to what you guys would normally play?

MAX: It was so much fun!  Yeah, we did the Fruition song and every single night we would do kind of different numbers with Lindsay Lou.  Actually, before the tour, we came up with a whole list of possible covers and tried to keep it to relevant to where we were playing, so naturally in Portland, that was when we were wanting to do the Fruition song and it came together so quickly. Immediately we started playing we're like, “Oh yeah, this is this is gonna work!  Lindsay’s just so amazing. She has this skill where she can work on lyrics during the day and then she'll have it by the night. It’s really impressive to see. That was one of the best things that I think we took away from that tour. On the last night, we did basically a whole entire set of all the collaborations that we had done throughout the tour with her and you know, a lot of them were slower numbers, not as raging as we have a tendency to do – you know, just kind of go out and hammer it really hard.  So for the second set of that show, there were all these kind of slower numbers, which is not exactly what we are used to doing, maybe also not exactly what the audience is used to seeing either, so we weren't really sure how it was gonna go. But a few songs into it, you could tell that people were really like taking it in and being super appreciative. After the show, we just realized and learned, if you play with heart and feeling then the fans really always will still enjoy it.

DCMR: So do I see some romantic ballads in your future? Maybe?

MAX: You never know. Joe just had a baby, so he's probably writing songs about that stuff. He’s got some James Taylor up his sleeve.

DCMR: Okay, so let’s go off the map a little bit, we’ll take a slight left. So, I always just like to Google some things about bands before I do an interview and some that have come up about you guys when I google ‘Kitchen Dwellers’ and ‘members’, it describes you guys  - and I know this is funny because you guys really don't fit in a bluegrass box necessarily, but you're often paired with bluegrass - the description when it comes up says “A twist on bluegrass, folk and rock through a kaleidoscope of homegrown stories, rich mythology, American West wanderlust and psychedelic cues.” How accurate do you think that is?  I mean, I would be interested in seeing that band even if I knew nothing about you guys.

MAX: (laughs) It’s actually pretty accurate, because the nature of the members of the band and our backgrounds and how we met - it all kind of melds into that thing. Like I come from a very rock and roll psychedelic background, so that's the music that I grew up with.  Torrin, grew up with some Punk being involved, but he also grew up knowing all the cowboy songs. I've learned cowboy music is different than country music from him too.

DCMR: So, if you guys were gonna do crossover albums, let's go genre by genre. Artists you would want to work with if you guys were doing a hip hop crossover album.

MAX: Oh, wow. Definitely the Wu Tang Clan.

DCMR: Oh my god. You said it best. Yes!

Okay an old school country album like we were just talking about

MAX: Okay, hmm I gotta think about it.  I don't think he's alive anymore.  Torrin like knew this guy growing up - Chris LeDoux.

DCMR: Okay, rock and roll.

MAX:   Torrin would say King Gizzard.

DCMR: What about Reggae?

MAX: I mean, The Wailers is probably too on the nose, but I used to always listen to this band – Mihali.

DCMR: All right, now let's do a little bit of rapid fire.  Tell me the member of the band that would be most likely to get left behind on tour or woke up late, forgot to get on the bus type.

MAX: Probably me (laughs)

DCMR: Most likely to be found taking shots with fans after the show.

MAX: Torrin

DCMR: Most likely to lose their boarding pass when you guys are getting on a flight.

MAX: Joe

DCMR: Strangest eating habits

MAX: Joe for sure.

DCMR: Favorite city to visit that no one is actually from  - so no hometown shows.

MAX: Asheville, North Carolina.

DCMR:  Okay, last one - cereal then milk or milk then cereal?

MAX: Oh, wow. Cereal then milk for sure.
