Yes Darling Comes to Gypsy Sally’s Tonight with The Dan Lipton Trio

Ryan and Hayley take over Gypsy Sally's facebook to promote their upcoming show

There is just one week left until the new super-duo, Yes Darling, comes to DC for their first time to play at Gypsy Sally's with The Dan Lipton Trio opening.

Yes Darling features Hayley Jane and Ryan Montbleau in an adorable, quirky, and fun combination of two powerful performers. While this is their first time together at Gypsy Sally's, neither are strangers to this Georgetown venue. You can begin to get a sense of what kind of chemistry we are in for from the description on the show page:

Hayley sings. Ryan plays guitar and sings. Which means Ryan does more.

Yeah, but Hayley puts way more time and effort into looking and sounding good on stage and is obviously the face of the project.

Led by the legendary Ryan Montbleau and commanded by the illustrious Hayley Jane, there is rarely a disagreement or power struggle within the project. The two get along like peas and carrots. Except for when they don’t. But they do. Yeah, sometimes. Hayley, you’re ruining this bio right now. Well Ryan, I told you to just let me do it! That never ends well. And you’re supposed to leave two spaces after the end of a sentence, I’ve had to go back and fix all of yours. What? I have never heard of that in my entire life! Don’t fix that one. Ugh, fine. Let’s get back to writing about how great we are.

The Dan Lipton Trio is another familiar group at Gypsy Sally's. In fact, they were on that main stage exactly a year ago today, and you can relive that night with a livestream recording and full set audio below. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 on day of show.

of Montreal Transforms the 9:30 Club Into A Magical Fantasy Playground of Sights and Sounds

When the room darkened and the background music cut out, the brief silence was met with shouts of excitement in anticipation for of Montreal. Four smartly dressed men took their places on stage and cued up for the opening song with synthy ethereal tones that had the crowd pushing closer together and toward the stage.

of Montreal's frontman Kevin Barnes

From stage right emerged a larger than life skeletal puppet, the first of numerous imaginative creations that night. “Grolandic Edit” kicked off the set, the easily recognizable beat striking a chord with concertgoers as they erupted into applause. Right on cue, the supremely talented, highly intriguing, and stunningly dressed frontman Kevin Barnes (singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter) skipped out on beat, taking his place in front of the festive puppet. His outfit explained the eclectic dress of some of those in attendance. Dressed in drag and a full face of makeup, Barnes was a vision in pink.

The band ran with their 80s vibes with “Paranoiac Intervals/Body Dysmorphia” which was embellished by dancers who wouldn’t look out of place in an aerobic workout video from the 80s (save from their masked orange faces and silver jumpsuits). Barnes led the crowd in a workout of their own, with jumping jacks, all the while performing with immaculate grace and talent, his voice unwavering and powerful.

of Montreal are an energy infused explosion of color, peppered with psychedelic influences that transformed the 9:30 Club into an ultra manic and wild dance party. Their live performance challenged the limits of the imagination, incorporating costumes, props, graphics, and sounds that bent the rules of reality. Although the band has seen turnover in the past, their current line-up is made up of Clayton Rychlik (drums, keys, guitar, bass), Jojo Glidewell (keys), Davey Pierce (bass), Bennett Dean Lewis (keys, guitar).

Each song got more extravagant, more decorated, and definitely sexier, the venue getting steamier and more tightly packed as the night went on. Concert-goers who I may have mistaken for shy and reserved prior to the show, morphed into silly and loose fans, letting go as they let the tunes consume them. The Georgia-based band played a setlist that was a happy blend of tracks from albums ranging to 2008’s Skeletal Lamping, to their most recent EP release, White is Relic/Irrealis Mood (2018).

“Plateau Phase/No Careerism No Corruption” combined electronic, rock, and psychedelic funk all in one, making the live version feel like a remix of their recorded track. The performance was so intense it felt like a song fit for an intergalactic battle. For Barnes’s third costume change of the night, he donned a white gown and a straight blonde wig, giving him the appearance of a futuristic angel. Covering Bonnie Beecher’s “Come Wander With Me,” Barnes took down the tempo. Belting the romantic lyrics, the performance was stunning, and felt almost spiritual. The final notes were met with a roaring applause louder than I thought a 1200 person capacity venue was capable of.

The party continued with “Soft Music/Juno Portraits Of The Jovian Sky,” which Barnes kicked off by ripping off his white gown to reveal a colorfully psychedelic, body-clinging leotard, performing the remainder of the main set with unbounded energy.

of Montreal's backup dancers leading the audience

When the band left the stage in preparation for their encore, the backup dancers took over, wordlessly leading the audience in an arena style cheering competition, motioning their puppet coated felt hands (paws? fins?) at the crowd, garnering ear-shattering cheers. When of Montreal bounded back on stage, two dancers leaped into the crowd surfing atop eager hands, as the band performed “Gallery Piece.”

“Let’s Relate” was the final song of the evening, during which Barnes celebrated the evening by stripping down to just his underwear. The live performance of this song was an interpretation I’d never heard before, but the electronic elements, combined with the patriotic graphics, costumes, and confetti cannon, made it a song to remember.

of Montreal

Confetti canons being shot while the devil rides on the back of a glowing monster! Nothing is out of the realm of the imagination at an of Montreal Concert.

Confetti canons being shot while the devil rides on the back of a glowing monster! Nothing is out of the realm of the imagination at an of Montreal Concert.

For a solid 90 minutes, I was entranced, under Barnes’s spell. of Montreal are an audio-visual sensory overload of a trip, during which to blink is to miss out. They require and command every ounce of attention you have. You’ve never truly experienced of Montreal until you’ve witnessed a live performance.

of Montreal’s recorded sound is like a cousin twice removed in comparison to their live performance — you can hear the likeness, but the resemblances cease post surface level. Their live performance is an electric combination of Fantasia (1940) and Mary Poppins (1964), but rather than dancing penguins, you’re treated to a larger than life puppet show starring “Tiger Man” and “Dolphin Boy.” In short, you never know what you’re going to get, but you can bet it will be an indescribable and wild adventure.

You have to see it to believe it.

Cigarettes After Sex Coming to the 9:30 Club

Brooklyn-based indie band Cigarettes After Sex are midway through their 2018 world tour, making a pit-stop at DC’s The 9:30 Club on Monday, April 2.

Fronted by founder and lead singer Greg Gonzalez (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass), Cigarettes After Sex is comprised of Phillip Tubbs (keyboards, electric guitar), Randall Miller (bass), and Jacob Tomsky (drums). The band has produced numerous singles, as well as a demo, EP, and their first self-titled studio album, which was released last year.

They have a religious following, which has allowed the band to tour all across the world, as well as a song that was included in an episode of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Citing influences such as Miles Davis and The Cowboy Junkies, fans of Beach House and Alvvays, will also appreciate Cigarettes After Sex’s dulcet tones.

Cigarettes After Sex are best digested on an overcast day, bundled in layers of blankets. They provide a cozy atmospheric sound to enhance any gray day, warming from within. Gonzalez sings with such a quiet passion that it’s impossible to not feel his lyrics in your gut. Aqueous Brings “Groove Rock,” Exploratory Improv to Baltimore’s 8×10

On a cold Thursday night in Baltimore (March 22), Buffalo, NY-born jam band Aqueous delighted their fans in the Charm City with a relentless, high energy set filled with deep jams throughout and the band’s debut of a Steely Dan cover that rewarded fans staying out late on a weeknight in Federal Hill. After a supporting set by the local experimental prog-rock trio Deaf Scene, Aqueous stretched their legs with an improv-laden set that lasted nearly two hours.

Mike Gantzer (Guitar)

Mike Gantzer (Guitar)

Wasting no time, the band opened with a 20+ minute jam out of their song “Skyway” with guitarist Mike Gantzer leading the way with an effects heavy funk line that brought out outstanding accompaniment on keyboards by guitarist/keyboardist David Loss before transitioning into a spacier rhythmic section by Gantzer. This jam – like many Aqueous explorations – was anchored by bassist Evan McPhaden, holding the band together thematically through a number of sections and changes. Over the course of the set, McPhaden’s ability to be the glue between the four players truly stood out. This jam descends into an almost percussive hard rock territory before returning to the structure of the song and concluding with Gantzer and Loss exchanging guitar licks in an aggressive peak.

Dave Loss (Guitar)

Dave Loss (Guitar)

The band seamlessly segues into “They’re Calling for You,” with its opening guitar lick offering a slight breather, if only for a moment, after an incredible opening jam. Here we get some foreshadowing of what’s to come from the band with a jam on the Steely Dan tune “Fez.” What follows is funky and dark with Gantzer providing screeching distortion and heavy, filtered bass from McPhaden. Aqueous manages to transition perfectly between these songs, landing in the ska-influenced “Median,” an upbeat tune with outstanding guitar harmonies and incredibly fun, fast-paced lyrics in the first verse. Once it enters its jam, after a section of isolated guitar, drummer Rob Houk leans heavily on his snare, taking the band into a lengthy bluegrass-tinged section featuring slide guitar soloing by Gantzer and teases of Jimi Hendrix’s “Third Stone from the Sun.”

Evan McPhaden (Bass)

One final segue lands the band in “Don’t Do It,” which provides the improvisational highlight of the set. Dropping immediately into a quiet, jazzy exploration, the band creates a psychedelic palette with heavy synth and excellent drum leads by Houk. The patience on display in this jam is what clearly set it apart in the show, with Gantzer and Loss particularly honed in with one another. Loss switches between synth and organ during the jam, allowing the band to create widely diverse sounds within this 20-minute centerpiece.

Rob Houk (Drum)

Rob Houk (Drum)

After the band takes it first brief stop between songs, Aqueous offered a familiar classic, but a debut for their live catalog, Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years.” This song lends itself well to Aqueous, with Gantzer’s lead vocals and pitch perfect harmonies from Loss, both vocally and on the guitar. It seemed to energize the crowd as well, as the show neared the midnight hour. Still, the band had time for one more opportunity for extended improvisation with “Weight of the Word.” This time Aqueous moved toward a downtempo, anthemic peak before ramping back up to bring the show to its scorching hot and ferocious conclusion.

Aqueous tour continues with dates throughout the Northeast all through April before they hit the festival circuit this summer. If you haven’t seen them before, do not miss them when they come through your town!

Goodman’s Good Music – Concert Picks of the Week – March 26th

Week Of:  March 26 - April 1

Summary: Steel Soul Pigeon Sunshine Jazz Yellow Sycamore Sky

I've been told that Mercury is in retrograde, which makes things...funkier/messier/more disjointed than usual? Hence this week's theme: Steel Soul Pigeon Sunshine Jazz Yellow Sycamore Sky.

DC Music Review Staff Picks:

These are the key "larger venue" shows that the DCMR staff are checking out/covering this week:

  • The Steel Woods with the Trongone Band at The Hamilton on March 28: "Like their name, The Steel Woods are a hybrid musical force, part hard-edged, part Americana roots country folk, man-made, yet organic, rock but also bluegrass, R&B, blues, gospel, soul and heavy metal." The Hamilton will be a great venue to check out this band and feel all the vibrations.
  • The Soul Rebels featuring GZA & Talib Kweli with Footwerk at the 9:30 Club on March 29 and also you can see Talib Kweli solo at the Broadberry on March 28: "The Soul Rebels started with an idea - to expand upon the pop music they loved on the radio and the New Orleans brass tradition they grew up on. They took that tradition and blended funk and soul with elements of hip hop, jazz and rock. The band has settled on an eight-piece all-brass lineup and have built a career around an eclectic live show that harnesses the power of horns and drums in a deep pocket funk party-like atmosphere."
  • Pigeons Playing Ping Pong at the 9:30 Club on March 30 and March 31: Pigeons Playing Ping Pong are playing on Passover.  Don't forget that your ping pong balls are leavened!  Some info: "PPPP brings end-of-the-world enthusiasm to their high-energy psychedelic funk. Their infectious electro-funk grooves, undeniable live energy and contagious smiles have their rabid fanbase “the Flock” growing exponentially. Based out of Baltimore, MD, this animated quartet has been scorching up the country with their explosive performances and danceable peaks... and they're loving every minute of it."
  • Dark Star Orchestra at the Jefferson Theater on March 30 and at Rams Head Live on March 31: "Using entire shows from the Grateful Dead’s decades of touring as a launching pad, Dark Star Orchestra recreates song for song performances straight from historic set lists. Not merely mimicking the Dead, DSO instead seeks the individual style of each era and offers its own interpretations and improvisations for a group famed and loved for their interpretations and improvisations."
  • Hot Tuna at Rams Head On Stage on March 31: "Lifelong members, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, formed this spin-off band in the late 60s after performing avidly with Jefferson Airplane. Fusing a variety of rock styles, free rhythmic techniques, and a collected timbre of instruments is what has identified this band over their 40+ years of playing."

Hidden Gem Shows:

These are the shows, often at smaller venues, that offer something intimate and special and should not be missed!

  • Akiko Yano on March 26, Eri Yamamoto Trio on March 27, Yoko Miwa Trio on March 28, Senri Oe on March 29 as past of the Japanese Jazz Series at Blues Alley: "There’s something for every DC-area music fan at this year’s Blues Alley Japanese Jazz Series. For those looking for a unique, quiet, folksy evening, Akiko Yano's opening night shows will be perfect. Want a precise, complex trio? Try Eri Yamamoto's set. If you're more in the mood for a big, energetic romp, don't miss Yoko Miwa, and again this year Senri Oe’s versatile musical stylings close out the series." The Japanese embassy is sponsoring this incredible opportunity, catch one or all of these shows!
  • Mary-El band at Cherry Blossom Festival at 1501 Maine Ave SW in DC on March 27: Mary-El is a force to be reckoned with. She is an incredibly powerful and talented performer who is so groovy, so funky, so electric, I often sit there agape when I watch her play. Here is the perfect opportunity to catch her AND enjoy the amazing cherry blossoms, a most exquisite pairing that you do not want to miss!
  • EmiSunshine & The Rain at Jammin' Java on March 27: EmiSunshine is the real deal. At 13 years, she is a legend in the making. She has a family musical lineage that goes back three generations so she grew up with music and performing in her blood. She sings gospel "with the conviction of a soul who’s been on the earth years beyond her age" and she puts on an amazing, animated, love-filled show.
  • Daamsel//Punch Drunk Tagalongs//Skaii at Epicure Cafe on March 28: Daamsel writes "gritty, emotional rock songs about smashing the patriarchy, and the strange people we meet in bars." Punch Drunk Tagalongs hail from Cleveland and offer delicious, "crunchy drums layered with decadent melodies and covered in overdriven guitars with a nougat-y bass center." Skaii is a newer outfit from DC who has been written up by DCMR for their impassioned songs and musicality and connection. This is going to be a fun, energetic show at the incredible Epicure Cafe (see more about the lovely, ever-changing Epicure below).
  • ilyAIMY at the Vinyl Lounge on March 28: ilyAIMY stands for I love you and I miss you. I've been watching this band play around the DMV for the past 10 years and I still love them and realize how much I've missed them when I see them. These two time Washington Area Music Association "Wammie" winners for Best Contemporary Folk Group offer something unique to the DMV scene and have been described as, "a welcome jolt in folk." Come get woken up and embraced by their music at the friendly Vinyl Lounge.
  • Epicure Relaunch Party at Epicure Cafe on March 30: The Epicure Cafe holds a dear place in my heart for its warmth, support of the local music and arts community, and the graciousness of the inspirational family that owns the cafe. They have been hard at work preparing for this relaunch with poetry, music, art, magic, and food and they are, "excited to share all the things and to celebrate together as we grow into this new chapter as a community!" The first time I went there I was welcomed with open arms and have been ever since. Go experience this magical, warm venue on this very special night.
  • Oh He Dead with Reed Appleseed and Aurean at DC9 Nightclub on March 30: I have not seen Oh He Dead yet but I can't wait. This DC-based, Motown influenced band mixes classic R&B vibes, funk, and folk with booty shaking songwriting and friends of mine swear by them. Joined by Reed Appleseed, described as, "alternative folk-rock, nightmare-country hybrid" and Aurean, who offer "genre-bending productions and live sets, often accentuating their energetic, synth-filled drops with sweeping, dramatic breakdowns," it's going to be a good, good time.
  • Lucy Rose at Union Stage on March 30: "Lucy Rose has gradually become one of the most respected and influential of the new generation of UK artists." I've been researching her and she is great. Maybe I'm biased because in one of her videos she dons a suit made out of dog treats and hot dogs. But her sound is infectious and as part of her world-wind tour, she's gracing us with her talent at the intimate Union Stage. Catch her while you still can.
  • Nicole Saphos - EP Release Show at Sotto on March 30: Jazz bassist and singer-songwriter Nicole Saphos has always "gotten lost in the elegant emotionality of The Great American Songbook." She has performed at such esteemed venues as The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Strathmore Mansion, and The Kimmel Center and after relocating to DC in 2012, she formed her own trio with drummer Ele Rubenstein and guitarist John Lee. Their latest EP, "Buzz and Bloom," is about "patiently harnessing buzzing energy to make way for a beautiful bloom."  Join them for this exciting and very personal EP release show.
  • Fly on the Wall - Live Recording Event with Sweater Set at Tonal Park on March 31: Have you ever joined an award-winning recording artist in the studio? Do you want to join two of the coolest, hottest, totally in-touch and effervescently talented multi-instrumentalists -- Maureen Andary and Sara Curtin -- of the beloved DC band Sweater Set as they record their 10-year anniversary album?  Of course you do! Robyn Mincher of The Washington Post Express wrote “(The Sweater Set) weaves through personal narratives as if Curtin and Andary are whispering juicy tidbits in your ear. But don't let the vintage-clad gossiping girls fool you — their songs are tales of self-governing women.” Each ticket includes admission to the live recording at Tonal Park studio (formerly Airshow), VIP tickets include a copy of the new album when it is released AND reserve seats for you up front. This is the perfect spring date event -- with your sweetie, your friends, or with yourself, because it's just that cool.
  • Yellow Dubmarine w/Pressing Strings at Gypsy Sally's  on March 31: Yellow "Dub" is a lovable band re-imagining the music of The Beatles in a tightly rehearsed reggae style. I wasn't sure if I should put this in the DCMR staff picks area or "hidden gems" because this show is certainly both. You are pretty much guaranteed to have a smile on your face if you go, and Gypsy Sally's is the perfect welcoming venue to host the fun.
  • Rogue Wave at Black Cat on March 31: California indie-pop band Rogue Wave are celebrating the10th anniversary re-issue of their seminal third album 'Asleep at Heaven's Gate' and will be coming to DC as part of their national tour to play the album in full, as well as other favorites.
  • Revelator Hill with Karen Jonas at Pearl Street Warehouse on March 31: Revelator Hill offers great, dirty, gritty, and girty rock and roll with a blues edge. Pair them with Virginia's honky-tonk sweetheart Karen Jonas and you're in for a fun night.
  • Cigarettes After Sex at The Jefferson Theater on March 31: Slow, subdued, hypnotic, and moody, the Brooklyn-quartet Cigarettes After Sex will twist you up with their straight-up lyrics and chew on you for awhile. If you need to catch your breath and go a little zoned-out deep, this is a perfect show. They will be hitting the DC 9:30 club on April 2 in case you miss this show.
  • Uptown Boys Choir, Boss Company, & Wicked Sycamore for Easter Fool's show at the Velvet Lounge on April 1: Check out this Easter Fool's show with three DMV bands:  Uptown Boys Choir perform their own special mix of punk, pop, and Americana, joined by DC's own cabaret-folk band, Boss Company, and Wicked Sycamore, the female fronted, acoustic trio who blend of contemporary acoustic with foundations in traditional folk.

Here are our recommendations for shows throughout the DMV.

Golden Gate Wingmen Open Tour Smokin’ in a Snowstorm at The Hamilton

The Hamilton's Closed Circuit Broadcast included a very welcoming backdrop for fans of the Golden Gate Wingmen.  (They knew who their demographic was for sure!)

As the Golden Gate Wingmen started into “Cassidy” toward the end of the first set on Wednesday night, March 21, 2018,  at The Hamilton, I thought it would be a fun cover song. But I quickly realized this would be a departure from the song I named my daughter after. This version of "Cassidy" captures the essence of this band—you may expect to hear a Dead cover band, but you discover joyously, while the band is discovering it as well, that you’re hearing all four guys’ experiences coming together to create a new and different style. Their music is often Dead-like, but it’s certainly not like any act you’ve heard play with the members of the Dead.

On a day when almost the entire city of Washington shut down because of an early Spring snowstorm, the Golden Gate Wingmen stuck to their plans to open their tour to a crowd of appreciative fans. The Hamilton was much more crowded than many of us expected, but the weather wasn’t going to stop people from getting down with these guys.

Guitarist John Kadlecik led the charge, along with Jeff Chimenti on keys, Reed Mathis on bass and Jay Lane on drums. We actually got a chance to talk with the band before the show, and we’ve included a bit of that interview below with a clip from the “Cassidy” jam. The whole show is available below, and the interview we did will be featured on an upcoming episode of the Brokedown Podcast. You can listen to a small clip of the interview at the bottom of this article.

These guys aren’t wingmen at all, in the traditional sense, but really are leaders of their craft coming together to create brand new music that they don’t get anywhere else. They mix in some non-Dead music as well, like Bob Dylan’s “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train To Cry” and “Ring Them Bells.” The second set featured covers of George Harrison, The Who, and John Lennon. These covers help, in a way, to keep them away from just playing the Dead, which helps to keep the perspective on their music, not the band they’re all best known for covering.

But there were plenty of Dead songs as well. The “Masterpiece” had a pure Jerry Garcia tone, but John K’s signature voice and feel. The set closing “Ripple” had a reggae vibe that combined Reed Mathis’s octave-bending effects with Jeff’s bluesy piano. As they said in our interview, they like having the freedom to kick back, take chances and explore—and this set was a great example of this in action.

The second set opened with a nice, long, bluesy “Sugaree,” with Jay Lane always being responsive and attuned to the changes in tempo and direction. Reed Mathis led the way on “Queen Jane Approximately,” which was made better by the combination of his voice and effects through his guitar amp, bending one’s impression of what can be done with a bass guitar.

Jay Layne was smiling ear to ear the entire night.

The highlight of the second set was a classic “Help On the Way > Slipknot,” but I don’t think anyone expected the “Wharf Rat” that came out of the jam. This version was soulful and included the important things about that song, but included a lot of originality as well. Jeff Chimenti’s haunting keys on this song helped remind the crowd of the heaviness of the original intention, and John’s soloing was spot on.

This was a special night at The Hamilton, mostly because we didn’t know what to expect with the weather, combined with the fact that it was the tour opener. In some ways, the band didn’t know what to expect, either. And that’s what makes them worth checking out. This is no Dead cover band. They may be wingmen, but they’re in their own league.

Reed Mathis did double duty on the bass, vocals and additional duty if you count the guitar active bass solos.

The second set closed with a rocking “Touch of Grey,” which was probably the song most closely played like the original. If they keep playing together, we will get by, indeed.
