Andy Frasco & The U.N. Kick Off Their East Coast Tour At Union Stage

On Wednesday, December 1st, an otherwise quiet night on Washington DC's Wharf, Andy Frasco & The U.N. came to Union Stage to create a very memorable night of music to a near-capacity audience.

Andy Frasco deep in the fun zone!
Andy Frasco deep in the fun zone!

Andy and his band create a unique one-of-a-kind performance each night akin to the best roller coaster ride experience one can imagine. Be forewarned; make sure that you are adequately strapped into your Frasco Roller Coaster Harness and ready for an incredible ride  of entertainment and music!

Just like the thrill you get from an amusement park ride, Andy Frasco & The U.N. shows are enjoyable every second and every moment of the concert. When the ride ends, concertgoers are left with an ear-to-ear smile and yet only remembers fragments of the experience - because our brains can only absorb so much awesomeness in one evening. As you recollect the show, one experience after another will come back, and the smile of the performance washes over you anew.

Andy Frasco & The U.N. is known not only for their ferociously energetic performance energy but also for guest sit-ins, improvisations, and the most delightful shenanigans you will witness on a stage. If you look at each musician during the performance, you will notice genuine laughter and the joyous interplay between one another. Likewise, it is not difficult to spot a smile or light-hearted interaction between band members during the show. Each performance is unique and created spontaneously in front of an audience, and this band's euphoric appearance at Union Stage was no different!

Try as we might to adequately describe an Andy Frasco & The U.N. performance in a traditional way, we thought it would be better to list off the highlights of their Union Stage performance. For those at Union Stage we hope this partial list triggers wonderful memories, and for those who were not able to attend, let it illustrate the type of performance you may witness on any given night.

At Union Stage concert goers were treated to:

  • A retired United States Marine joined the band on stage to perform on Frasco's piano
  • Not one, but two, band instrument changes. A very entertaining guitar solo highlighted the instrument changes by drummer Andee Avila as his eyes were covered by Floyd Kellogg (bass). Each musician is incredibly talented in their primary instrument but are also very gifted in one or more of the other instruments concertgoers see them play in a given evening.
  • Alex "Gator" Petropulos of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong made a guest appearance and sat-in for one song.
  • Abundant song tempo changes. A perfect example was when Frasco shouted mid-song "reggae," and the band rapidly adapted the performance of that song to a reggae beat. You never know how a performance or even an individual song will play out - especially as Frasco orchestrates the dynamic performance.
  • A euphoric sax-off between Ernie Chang and opening act Nick Gerlach.
  • During the evening there were animated cover of "Kiss Off" by the Violent Femmes, "Livin' On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi, "This Must Be The Place" by Talking Heads, "I Fought The Law (And The Law Won)" by The Bobby Fuller Four, "Killing In the Name" by Rage Against The Machine, and a cover of a Stone Temple Pilots song amongst others. A typical performance by Andy Frasco & The U.N. can be summarized by "You know that song, that best song we love and have not heard in a while? Yeah, they played that at that show too!"
  • In celebration of Hannukah, Andy Frasco walked into the crowd to lead the audience in a giant and memorable hora. Although audience members required masks, Frasco lovingly announced, "hold your breath, so you don't get COVID."
Andy Frasco leads the audience to an amazing Hanukkah Hora!

Andy Frasco leads the audience to an amazing Hanukkah Hora!

The only groan of the night occurred when Frasco announced that "I'm going to play until they kick me out of this state." Noticing that something was off Shawn Eckles (guitar) was quick to whisper something into Frasco's ear, to which Frasco announced that he would not leave the “District” until the authorities kicked him out. Throughout the evening, Frasco repeatedly expressed how grateful he was that a capacity showed up for his performance and told the audience how he would make sure that they would come back to Washington DC as often as he could. Frasco's promise was greeted by a very enthusiastic response from the crowd!

At the tail end of the evening's festivities, Frasco told the audience that the band has been touring hard for several weeks now, performing six nights a week and that this band performing on stage was "their white picket fence." Based on the enthusiasm from the crowd, it would appear that there is no white picket fence that they would spend their days dancing in. Until their next appearance, we should all take Frasco's advice, live life to its fullest because we do not know what the future holds - and as always, Keep On Keeping On.

When Hiss Golden Messenger performs live, it creates a heavenly musical sanctuary for music lovers that is amplified by the profound communal spirit that frontman/songwriter M.C. Taylor provides.

Only released last month, Hiss Golden Messenger frontman/songwriter M.C. Taylor created a new kind of holiday album with O Come All Ye Faithful that was conceptualized and written during the surreal months of 2020. Quietly Blowing It allowed Taylor to shine a light on our innermost emotions and those that rarely reveal themselves.

“A Year in the Pit: A Journey into Music Photography” Premiers In Harrisonburg, Virginia

Calling all DMV music lovers! On December 11, 2021, the world premiere of "A Year in the Pit: A Journey into Music Photography" will premier at Court Square Theater in Harrisonburg, VA.

This documentary is one-hour long and follows concert photographers commonly found in the pit at music festivals. Shooting "in the pit" requires intense, split-second decisions to capture the ultimate on-stage moment. The symbiotic relationship between image-maker and musician provides the backdrop for a great story. The film explores the artistry and images of some of America's finest music photographers and the most familiar concert photographers in the DMV.

For those music lovers who call the DMV home, you will be intimately familiar with the filming locations because the film was shot at Virginia-based festivals and venues. These include the familiar LOCKN', FloydFest, Rooster Walk, Galax, Hoopla, Bayou Boogaloo, The Festy, The National, and The Hamilton in Washington DC. The documentary also transports us to the French Quarter Fest in New Orleans, The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, and the recently closed Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA.

Please join your fellow music lovers as this documentary provides stunning images and footage of your favorite music festivals and get a glimpse of what it is like to be a concert photographer in the pit.

100% of the proceeds from ticket sales will support Arts Council of the Valley.

Andy Frasco & The U.N. Coming To Union Stage December 1st

If you have never seen Andy Frasco & The U.N. perform, then be prepared to have a transformative concert experience. If you have already seen them perform, get ready for another one-of-a-kind concert experience!

Andy Frasco & The U.N.'s concert experience is truly like no other concert experience you will experience, and you should be prepared for a loud, joyful, festive, and unscripted & unique concert experience akin to the best raucous house party that you ever wanted to attend - just what we all so desperately need during these surreal days.

"We're going through a mental health crisis right now," says Andy Frasco. "Loneliness, depression, suicide, it's all on the rise. When you're struggling in the moment, it can feel like you're the only one, but that's just not the truth. I wanted to make a record to remind you that you're not alone."

Andy Frasco & The U.N. performs at Union Stage on Wednesday, December 1, at Union Stage
Andy Frasco & The U.N.

It makes sense, then, that Frasco's rousing new L.P., 'Keep On Keepin' On,' lands somewhere between an emotionally raw therapy session and a rowdy house party. Produced in part by Widespread Panic's Dave Schools and in part by former Awolnation keyboardist Kenny Carkeet, the collection finds Frasco digging deeper than he's ever dug before, fusing ecstatic rock and soul with infectious pop and funk as he grapples with the kind of demons he's spent the better part of his adult life running from. The songs here are blunt in their honesty and unsparing in their self-examination, but they remain, at their core, works of great hope and promise. They're the work of a man who's been through the darkest part of the night and, now that dawn is finally breaking, is ready to share his story.

Initially, Frasco hired local pickup musicians off of Craigslist to back him for gigs, but soon he put together a steady(ish) lineup, and Andy Frasco & The U.N. began taking the world by storm. The group would release a series of acclaimed records, share bills with the likes of Leon Russell, Galactic, Gary Clark, Jr., The Revivalists, and Marcus King, among others, and slay festival stages everywhere around the United States and abroad.  Many in the DMV may have seen this act perform at the 2021 editions of Peach Festival and Hot August.  Andy Frasco & The U.N. will be supported by Nick Gerlach's Cult Conference.

An evening with Andy Frasco & The U.N. is going to be the cheapest and most joyful therapy session you will experience and one that you will not soon forget - music therapy at its finest!

Lukas Nelson Keeps Promise, Delivers Real Rock and Roll Show to Raucous Crowd in DC

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real (POTR) are a band on fire. The tight-knit quintet is celebrating their return to the road and bringing their dedicated fanbase along their magical, musical journey. On Saturday, October 23, Lukas and his mates had a spirited DC crowd in a tizzy at The Lincoln Theatre. Playing their first show in DC Proper since May 2016 (Gypsy Sally's), Lukas & POTR reminded us of that elusive feeling. That feeling that only happens when a band and the crowd are united as one. Bodies were moving and (masked) faces were glowing as sacred music filled the room in the historic  DC theatre.

The band is touring in support of their new album, A Few Stars Apart, released in June 2021. It features a collection of songs that showcases a combination of Nelson's stellar songwriting and the band's supreme musicianship. Written during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lukas was able use the first "down time" of his life to reflect on his musical odyssey. The result is a masterpiece album that will undoubtedly stand the test of time.

Lukas & POTR treated the crowd to live renditions of most of the new album – songs that featured Lukas on electric and acoustic guitars, as well as piano. POTR consists of Lukas Nelson (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Anthony LoGerfo (drums, percussion), Corey McCormick (bass guitar, vocals), Logan Metz (keyboards, lap steel, guitar, harmonica, vocals), and Tato Melgar (percussion). The talent and cohesion was on full display as the band transitioned seamlessly from full-on rockers to heartfelt ballads with a touch of real country in between.

One of the most poignant moments came late in set, when Nelson performed "Smile" solo on piano. The crowd stood transfixed, prisoners of the sheer beauty Lukas shared with us. It was a moment trapped in time. A moment that will live forever in our memories. And we can't help but smile.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Return to The Anthem This Friday With Sunsquabi

Are you still wondering how to kick off your Halloween Weekend? Look no further than the biggest annual gathering of the Flock under a single roof - as up to 6,500 Pigeons Playing Ping Pong fans will be gathering in Washington, DC this Friday, October 29 at The Anthem. Baltimore's beloved band is normally funking it up around the country, but on rare occasions, they get to perform in front of a hometown audience.  Knowing Pigeons and how much they truly love their hometown we can always count on an incredible show by Pigeons Playing Ping Pong.  We want to amend that last statement - as Pigeons always puts on a spectacular performance regardless of where they are performing.

SunSquabi performs at the 9:30 Club

Joining Pigeons is none other than Sunsquabi. This trio describes themselves as "A Hydro Funk Experience." We would like to describe them as mesmerizing IGLOD - Intergalactic Lords Of Dance! Besides their infectious and powerful dance grooves, their laser light show is something to behold in person. DC Music Review saw firsthand how the lasers lit up the 9:30 Club in 2019, and we are giddy to see how their light show will illuminate The Anthem.

SunSquabi performs at the 9:30 Club

Pigeons will be be warming up for their Halloween performance just two nights later in Ohio. Dubbed "DAFT  SIDE of the MOON," the band will engage in some serious musical melding of music by Daft Punk and Pink Floyd.  We certainly know that Halloween antics or not, this is going to be an incredible night of music put on by both bands that will ensure that your weekend is started off funktastically!

TAUK And LITZ Poised To Bring A Ghoulish Halloween To The State Theatre

The progressive rock quartet TAUK brings their all-instrumental blend of progressive rock, hip-hop and jazz to the State Theatre in Falls Church on Halloween, October 31st with special guests LITZ. This fall tour supports TAUK's recently Released album Chaos Companion (Please listen to album embedded below).

TAUK - Chaos Companion
TAUK - Chaos Companion

TAUK has been performing across the United States for the last several years, and recently released several iterations of “Real TAUK”, to document some of the great moments from each tour.  Each Real TAUK release showcases the potent chemistry they discovered in childhood, when longtime friends Charles Dolan, Matt Jalbert, and A.C. Carter formed their first band in seventh grade. After playing together in various projects, the trio brought Isaac Teel into the fold in 2012, cementing the final lineup. Since then, TAUK have shared stages with acts like Umphrey’s McGee, Widespread Panic, and Lettuce, appeared at festivals like Electric Forest and Bonnaroo, and earned acclaim from major outlets like the Washington Post (who praised TAUK for “creating a hard-charging, often melodic fusion that—thanks to a penchant for improv—offers limitless possibilities”).  The band’s incessant touring over the years has significantly strengthened their musical connection.

Supporting TAUK is Maryland's own beloved LITZ. This band has some equally tantalizing jam-funk originals. LITZ delightfully intertwines rock and funk with mesmerizing dance rhythms, and imaginative lyrics. LITZ has been shaking things up since 2013 and has performed at festivals and clubs throughout the country.

We can only wonder what sort of Halloween shenanigans TAUK and LITZ have planned this Spooktacular evening!

We will all have to tune in to see if this funktastic night of music will make it into the next "Real TAUK."  But why wait to see the next episode when you can attend and take in a spectacular night of music on October 31st!

Performance details follow below.
