Villain & Saint in Bethesda Closes

As the saying goes "Good News Travels, Bad News Travels Faster."

With that said, DC Music Review regrets to pass along the news that downtown Bethesda's beloved Villain & Saint has shut down.

To all our customers and bands that have performed at Villain, we have closed our doors. We have enjoyed serving and entertaining Bethesda for four years. Please visit us at our two other music venues Keystone Korner Baltimore and Villain & Saint in Atlantic City at the Ocean Casino Resort

//  Message on Villain & Saint's website and social media..

Villain & Saint has been a staple of the Metro DC area music community and as recently as this past Saturday, Black Masala performed at the venue. According to an article in Bethesda Magazine, the venue closed due to financial struggles.

This is a genuinely somber time for the local music community - musicians and music lovers alike. In addition to local acts, the venue became home to Neel Singh’s Open Jam/Workshop. This event held every other Wednesday attracted musicians from around the region to jam, collaborate, and meet.

We are very sad for all the employees of this beloved venue who are now without jobs (Editor Note: We have been told that the owner of Villan & Saint is trying to relocate employees in other jobs within the parent companies establishments). We are disappointed for all the musical acts that have lost a musical home and were scheduled to perform.  We are sad for the music community and fans who have lost a place they called home and watched excceptionally talented musicians perform.  May each and every one find a new home filled with music to fill the air.

DC Music Review will miss back patio, the wonderful tapestries on display, and the insanely talented musicians that graced Villain & Saint's stage and magical moments with friends and fans alike.

Goodman’s Good Mix – Concert Picks of the Week – September 30

Featured above is DC band The OSYX who will release their highly anticipated first album on Friday night at Comet Ping Pong with Black Folks Don't Swim? and The Meer. You can also catch them on Tuesday at Gallery Experience: This Could Go Boom! at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and again on Saturday at Baltimore Free Farm with  Shagwüf and Sarah FM.  Photo by Nina Goodman.

Week Of:  September 30  — October 6, 2019

Summary: Sweet Release

So much happening this week, as always, and we are lucky for it!

Our feature this week is the tremendous DC-based band The OSYX, made up of five artists who have come together, bringing their own unique strength, musicality, and passion into one pro-womxn collective whose music is singularly original, largely raucous and at times silvery. They are releasing their first full-length album on Friday night at Comet Ping Pong at a show that features the unique and incomparable Black Folks Don't Swim? and the lush sounds of The Meer. (And if you miss it, The OSYX are also playing on Saturday with Shagwüf and Sarah FM at Baltimore Free Farm.)

The band also forms the backbone of This Could Go Boom!, a non-profit that, "curates, creates, publishes, promotes, and distributes the musical works of under represented gender diverse people." They will be hosting a discussion on starting a record label and the importance of gender equality in the music industry at Gallery Experience: This Could Go Boom! on Tuesday at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

And this week there are a lot "not your usual" opportunities this week to experience music, including:

...not to mention all of the tremendous shows happening (listed below), with personal choices in bold, along with a list of the DCMR staff top picks and cool "gems" that you don't want to miss.

Get out there and FEEL IT ALL!

Maggie Koerner Roars at Pearl Street Warehouse

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Maggie Koerner made her Pearl Street Warehouse debut at The Wharf last Thursday, September 19 and made sure to leave an impression on the capacity crowd.

Hailing from New Orleans, the emotive songstress combined her mighty voice with deep, personal songs to create an intimate experience that connected with her fans old and new. Her fierce vocals reverberated throughout the venue and her passion was palpable on songs like the soul-pop number "Shadows" and the blues-infused "He Calls Me Mama."  Koerner owned the stage – spinning, gyrating and emoting – as she commanded the crowd's attention and admiration. Ultimately, her voice proved her most valuable weapon, consistently cutting to the core with impressive ferocity. She closed the set with her recent single, "If I Die," and left the crowd wanting more.

The gracious Koerner mingled with her fans, signing autographs and posing for photographs after her set. If this performance was any indication, it  won't be long until she returns to DC to serenade us once again.

Rise Moon: Full Moon Friday the 13th Tour Opener for The Stringdusters

As the full moon rose on Friday the 13th in Norfolk, Virginia, there were quite a few figures lurking in the shadows. Luckily, those figures were the folks diligently working to set up the stage at the NorVa for The Infamous Stringdusters and The Ghost of Paul Revere. The award winning venue was hosting the first stop of the Stringdusters Fall tour after their Spring 2019 release of the album Rise Sun. The Dusters have been a solid presence in the newgrass scene for quite some time and have helped bring it to the forefront of festivals and venues throughout the country. While still maintaining roots in traditional string band music, they have weaved in their own influences and deliver a high energy, uplifting performance accentuated with outstanding lighting design performed by Jason Gutworth. The Dusters put the right foot forward in Norfolk as they step out on their next round of tour dates.

Openers, The Ghost of Paul Revere, brought their upbeat style of folk tunes to the stage to warm up the crowd and they did just that. Hailing from Portland, Maine, they take what could be some mellow acoustic tunes and energize it with a rock influence that results in rowdy anthems that are comparable to Nathaniel Ratliffe & the Night Sweats. They are touring heavily throughout the U.S. throught the end of November in support of their new album Monarch which has a release date of October 27.

The opening notes from Andy Hall’s dobro took the band into “It’ll Be Alright” and segued it into Appalachia standard “Cluck Ol’ Hen.” With nothing less than the full attention of the crowd, the band began a new fan favorite from the new album, “Planets.” Another highlight was a song fitting for any touring band and a great chorus sing-a-long “The Place That I call Home.” The Dusters finished the first set with a three song run beginning with a cover of the haunting Dylan melody “Senor.”

The fun continued into set two with the title track of Rise Sun kicking things off. “Night on the River” followed and was jammed into another Rise Sun sing-a-long track “Carry Me Away.” “Colorado,” a shoutout to one of America’s favorite states, was performed along with a raucous instrumental “Sirens” with Jeremy Garrett sawing like mad on his fiddle. Other highlights of the set were “Black Elk,” another Rise Sun track “Wake the Dead,” and “Blockygrass” to finish the set. In honor of the full moon, the song chosen for the encore was Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” and was an excellent way to close out the night.

The Stringdusters will be making their way around the country for their second tour supporting the new album. Get out and catch these Grammy Award winning musicians and see what the fuss is all about!

Members of SOJA Sit In At Gordon Sterling’s Gypsysally’s Jam [Video/Audio]

One of the reasons we love Gordon Sterling's Gypsysally's Jam so much is that we never know who is going to show up to play. Last night, we were treated to sit ins by Hellman Escorcia and Ryan "Byrd" Berty of SOJA. Both musicians joined the house band in the video below (Act 5 in the tracked out audio). Escorcia also joined a bucket jam before that (Act 4) and again joined the house band at the end of the night for a tribute to Robert Hunter, who passed away the night before. Hunter was a lyricists who wrote many of the Grateful Dead's songs.

The bucket jams first came to Gypsy Sally's just over two years ago, in September of 2017. The open jam format gives anyone who wants to play the opportunity to perform on Gypsy Sally's main stage, replete with their professional sound and lighting, by Sean Keegan. We stream every one of these jams that we can, and you can relive nearly all of them at the Gordon Sterling Presents: The Gypsysally's Jam facebook page.

“Down In The Reeds” – A New DC Festival is Coming October 19

Get ready for DC's newest homegrown music festival - Down in The Reeds (DitR). This new festival is positioned to be DC's premiere fall festival held in one of the more unique settings in The District.

In late August, the organizers and producers of the Funk Parade and Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival teamed up with Grammy Award-winning American Songster Dom Flemons and over 20 local partners to announce the first annual Down in the Reeds Festival, which will take place on Saturday, October 19. This day-long celebration of fall and music festival has a mission of healing through community and music.

“The mission is to create an outdoor fall gathering that not only brings together a mosaic of entertainment and activations but is also reflective of DC’s cultural diversity and celebrates the healing power of music.”

Cris Naoum   //  Co-Organizer & Founder of Listen Local First

DitR takes place on the historic campus of former Walter Reed Medical Center — now called the Parks at Walter Reed — and features some of the District's best and most diverse musical acts, as well as local artisans, breweries, food trucks, and family games and activities.

Until now DC proper has had several festivals spanning the spring and summer months. Now, thanks to Listen Local First, the District finally has the perfect fall bookend to the DC music festival season  with Down in the Reeds.

“It’s a huge honor to be involved in the Down in the Reeds Festival on the historic Walter Reed site because I want to help honor the legacy of the Military veterans through the power of music. Washington, D.C. also has a rich and vibrant music community that has deep roots in the African American experience and hundreds of cultures/ethnicities from all around the world! Our goal is to bring all the communities together to help celebrate the healing aspects of music. When a person hears a song it can spark cultural memory that will not only enrich their lives but the community around them.”

Dom Flemons  //  Co-Organizer & The American Songster

In the years after its closure, the grounds of the historic Walter Reed Medical Center remained idle as community leaders sought the best way to utilize the space. Now, like a caterpillar that lay dormant in its chrysalis to emerge as something new - the former campus of Water Reed emerges as something new.

We look forward to celebrating Washington DC, its community, its culture, and its music with everyone on October 19.

Beer-lovers, foodies, and outdoor adventure enthusiasts will all be more than satisfied at the Devil's Backbone Festival.

Held at Basecamp Brewpub and Meadows, the location houses the Devil's Backbone Brewery, Distillery, Restaurant and more!  The website boasts that they are "Pretty much the music, food, camping and beer wonderland of Nelson County" and man did they hit the nail on the head!

After attending the festival last year, I said I would always go back and the fun is non-stop at the late September festival.  Not only do they have an amazing layout with so many options (including indoors, air conditioning and delicious cuisine, if needed) but the people that gather for this festival are top notch as well.  A beautiful drive from a bit north makes the trip totally worth it at this time of year and once you are there, you have countless options to enjoy the majestic location in the heart of Nelson County.

The weekend includes pop-up beer tastings, outdoor adventures, property tours, crafts, great eats, and tons of incredible live music!  Tickets are a 'music and adventure pass' and multi-day passes that include Friday even get access to their “Pop Up” Beer Tasting (21 & over only) in the Meadows and The Outdoor Bar area on Friday.

Listed on the schedule in previous years are hiking, beer tours, mountain biking trips and tons of fun for the kids and kids-at-heart.  There is also plenty to do onsite even including fun games (keg-tossing, anyone?) plus the great music to enjoy!
