Cris Jacobs Celebrates Jerry Garcia And The Days Between In Maryland And Virginia

Cris Jacobs, a prominent and much celebrated musician in the DMV and beyond, will be honoring Jerry Garcia over the next two weeks as he performs "Jerry Garcia's The Days Between" at The 8x10 in Baltimore later this week and at B Chord Brewing in Round Hill, Virginia next weekend.

Grateful Dead co-founder Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942, and died on August 9, 1995. Since this musical icon's death, Deadheads across the globe call the nine days in August between his birthday and his passing "The Days Between."  This period has traditionally been seen as a time to celebrate and honor the music and memory of Garcia.  Cris Jacobs decided to start this year's celebration a little bit early to get a few more nights of weekend celebrations in.

Cris Jacobs needs no introduction to any Deadhead, let alone Baltimore or DMV resident. Jacobs has deep roots in Baltimore as the frontman for the much beloved The Bridge. Jacobs has stepped foot on almost every stage and music festival throughout the region as he delights fans with his music from the smallest of venues to national stages.   Each year, Jacobs provides the region two special Jerry Garcia tribute performances. Each December, Jacobs performs "A Very Jerry Christmas," and each August, he provides "The Days Between."

We truly look forward to seeing Chris Jacobs perform at both The 8x10 and B Chord Brewing as he pays homage to one of the greats.  It is worth noting that B Chord Brewing will be releasing a very special Juicy Garcia IPA in cans to mark the occasion!

Tedeschi Trucks Band performs at Wolf Trap on July 19, 2022
Concert Reviews

The Moon Rises Over Wolf Trap As Tedeschi Trucks Band Shines Brightly

Tedeschi Trucks Band (TTB) rolled into The Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia, on July 19 as part of their "Wheels of Soul Summer Tour." Now in its sixth year, this tour is Tedeschi Trucks Band's flagship multi-band summer tour, and Wolf Trap has been fortunate enough to play host to the last five.

This year Tedeschi Trucks would bring Los Lobos and The Gabe Dixon Band with them on this thirty-four-date trans-continental soul caravan. Los Lobos last graced the stage with Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2016, while Gabe Dixon is TTB's keyboardist, singer, and songwriter.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - I Am The Moon

Tedeschi Trucks Band also brought their latest and most ambitious album to date along with them -  I Am The Moon. This career-defining album is TTB's fifth studio release and the band is releasing the album as four smaller albums under the umbrella of I Am The Moon. The album was crafted  during the pandemic and was inspired by a mythic Persian tale of star-crossed lovers who are emotionally driven by the isolation and disconnection of the pandemic era. For many of us who have lived through the last two plus years of this pandemic, we can relate the themes of this album. It is composed of twenty-four original songs that add up to over two hours of awe-inspiring new music. As each of the four albums is released, the band will release a video three days before the album release date.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - I Am The Moon

At the time of this writing and performance, Tedeschi Trucks Band has only released the first parts of I Am The Moon - I. Crescent, and II. Ascension. Based on what we have heard in the first half of this album, we eagerly await III. The Fall, and IV. Farewell.

The Gabe Dixon Band perform at Wolf Trap on July 19, 2022

The Gabe Dixon Band

Gabe Dixon and his band walked on stage at 7 o’clock sharp with a beaming smile and remarked how much he loved Wolf Trap and considered it one of his favorite venues. Dixon radiated on stage while performing several original songs and showed off his prowess for tickling the ivories as he captivated the audience during a piano solo within Bob Dylan's "Tangled Up In Blue." Tedeschi Trucks Band incredible bandmates Kebbi Williams (saxophone) and Ephraim Owens (trumpet) sat in with Dixon during his set.

Los Lobos

Next to hit the soulful stage was Los Lobos. Although Los Lobos may be best remembered by a casual music lover for their 1987 version of "La Bamba," they have released a staggering seventeen albums since their debut album Los Lobos del Este de Los Angeles (1978). This band continues to create new music and only last year released Native Sons (2021). For nearly an hour, Los Lobos showed why they are among America's most diverse and prolific bands. They weaved in and out of their song catalog while delving into "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," by The Temptations and an unforgettable extended version of "Oye Coma Va," by Santana. During the last song of their set Susan Tedeschi joined the band for a breathtaking rendition of "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye.  As Susan Tedeschi warmed up her vocal cords, Los Lobos  drove this song to a full crescendo and ended their set with a standing ovation.

Los Lobos

At 9:20 PM, as the 21-day-old Waning Gibbous moon crested above the horizon, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and the rest of this prolific twelve-piece rock and soul powerhouse of a band hit the stage.

Tedeschi Trucks Band was eager to showcase their latest masterpiece album this evening as they started the performance with "Playing With My Emotions," the first track off of I Am The Moon: II. Ascension. In fact, Tedeschi Trucks performed five of the twelve released tracks from I Am The Moon during this performance, including "Hear My Dear," "Fall In," "Pasaquan," and the title track, "I Am The Moon."

Tedeschi Trucks Band

After playing with our emotions, TTB settled in with one of their most well-known songs, "Made Up Mind." As the moon rose above Wolf Trap, Derek Trucks decided to wind up the pace of the performance with blistering guitar work to captivate the audience and prepare them for the next phase of the moon. Mike Mattison, known for his brilliant vocals,  came down from his place in the vocal accompaniment section with an acoustic guitar and  performed "Fall In" from "I Am The Moon. I: Crescent." It was with great delight to see Mattison add instrumental duties to the performance.

Tedeschi Trucks Band
Derek Trucks (Majnun) and Susan Tedeschi (Layla)

As the band settled in and performed "Outside Woman Blues,"  Susan Tedeschi and others left the stage to allow Derek and the remaining members to deliver a masterclass blues and percussion performance. As the band pressed on, Susan Tedeschi had not returned to the stage. Reflecting on the "Story of Layla and Majnun" and the new album, was Susan the Layla to Derek's Majnun? Was Susan, in fact, The Moon? Unlike this ancient Persian story in which Majnun was driven to madness by his unattainable love, Layla, there is no doubt about the love and connection between Derek and Susan. Through shared glances and interactions on stage, it is quite clear that both Derek and Susan are one another's moon, and one could only hope that a partner would look at us like Derek and Susan gaze upon each other.

Derek Trucks (Majnun) and Susan Tedeschi (Layla)

Susan and the moon would once again return to the stage as the concert drove on. In fact, during "Midnight in Harlem," the moon visibly appeared on stage. The moon  looked down upon this performance as Tedeschi Trucks delicately played another one of their signature songs. As the last note of "Midnight in Harlem" echoed into the night, the projected moon set.

Tedeschi Trucks Bands' powerful horn section

Tedeschi Trucks Bands' unparalleled horn section

TTB would immediately launch into another powerhouse in their catalog, "Bound For Glory." This last song would showcase the full power and breadth of TTB's music prowess, including the outstanding vocal performance by Alecia Chakour.

Barely a minute after the band finished "Bound For Glory," and the audience rose to their feet, TTB decided to close out the night with yet another powerhouse of a song, "Get What You Deserve." Tedeschi Trucks' moon shone brightly throughout the night, but the last two songs would bring the audience to their frenzied feet.

The third installment of  I Am The Moon, "III. The Fall," is due out July 29 (accompanying video July 26), and the conclusion of this monumental masterpiece, "IV. Farewell," due out on August 26 (accompanying video August 23). With joyous anticipation, we look forward to Tedeschi Trucks Band's annual winter retreat in the Washington DC Region - their Warner Theatre Residency, which should occur sometime in February 2023.

Umphrey’s McGee's "Asking For A Friend"

Asking for a Friend: Talking About Umphrey’s McGee’s New Album with Joel Cummins

Even after 25 years, Umphrey’s McGee continues to surprise their listeners. The Chicago-based jam band is known for their energetic live shows filled with extensive improvisation and prog-rock stylings, but with the band’s latest album, Asking for a Friend, they’ve shown a new layer of sonic range and released a cohesive collection of songs that will reward listeners willing to treat what some would call a departure as an exploration.

Joel Cummins of Umphrey's McGee at The Anthem

Joel Cummins of Umphrey's McGee

“There is something to be said for making a cool, cohesive album in 2022,” said keyboardist Joel Cummins when asked about the band’s process for this album. “It’s not like the live show, where we’re really striving for improvisational moments that are moving. This is more about architecture and song construction. In a way this is a little bit riskier for us.”

Joel Cummins of Umphrey's McGee at The Anthem

The result is a collection of new songs in the Umphrey’s McGee repertoire that rely less on heavy guitar leads and explore new harmonic textures that the band has not attempted on their earlier albums. “Once we saw where these songs were going, it was easy to figure out what to do. You want them to have some sort of connection with each other.”

Brendan Bayliss and Joel Cummings perform together at The Anthem

Brendan Bayliss and Joel Cummings

The album begins with a bouncing, ska-infused rhythm to open “I Don’t Know What I Want,” a song that has already found its way into Umphrey’s live shows and features beautiful guitar harmonization in its chorus by guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger. But the tonal shift in this album is clear in its second track “Small Strides,” with its elements of dream pop and disco over a steady dub bass line by Ryan Stasik. Regarding the writing process for “Small Strides” Cummins told us, “These songs really have the benefit of two and a half years to work with them and continue to listen and come up with new ideas. I remember coming up with some stuff for that one and singing it into my phone and sending it to the band.”

Taking their time with the songs gave them room to breathe that comes through in the final product, and helped allow for new types of collaboration throughout the album. Commenting on his piano solo in “It’s Not Your Fault,” Cummins shared, “I recorded that on three different pianos and after we’d finally picked the one that was going to work I told Jake, ‘Dude, there’s some holes in here, so let’s see if we can make this more of a conversation between you and me.’” Together they produce what Cummins called “a pastoral vibe” that provides a backdrop for one of the heavier, prog-rock climaxes of the album.

Joel Cummins of Umphrey's McGee

The album features multiple earworms that will evoke a wide variety of genres and inspirations, and more can seemingly be found on each new listen to this collection of delightfully unusual Umphrey’s tunes. “Fenced In” offers a slick, understated groove, one that Cummins said will be fun, but tricky to play live. “The form is just so confusing. It’s got a bluesy, but groovy vibe. I have no idea what Bayliss was thinking with this one.” Meanwhile, “New Wings” could be likened to yacht rock, “Escape Goat” offers synth pop with an arena rock guitar solo to bring it home, and “Hiccups” provides break-beat rhythms that will keep fans dancing at concerts for years to come.

Joel Cummins

With Asking For a Friend now out in the world, the band will get to explore these songs from a new perspective. Most of the songs from this album haven’t yet been performed live. Cummins describes this as “the downside of having two and a half years to work on them.”

Joel Cummins

“They’re hard to play!” said Cummins. “There’s a lot going on vocally that we have to sort out.” The band will have ample time to road-test the songs from this latest release in their discography, one of their most cohesive and unique albums to date. You can catch them touring nationwide -- including the band’s first performances in Alaska -- this summer.

In the meantime, you can find Asking For a Friend on any streaming service and wherever music is sold. Joel recommends listening on headphones and big stereo systems.

Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway perform at The Birchmere
Concert Reviews

Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway Turns The Birchmere Into One Big Backyard

Molly Tuttle & The Golden Highway performed to a sold-out Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia, on June 27th, 2022.

These musicians have spent the better part of last month traversing the country, performing almost from sea to shining sea of the United States - from the Rockies at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado, to Boston, Massacchutesstes, where they visited their old stomping grounds at the Berklee College of Music. Their journey embraces Tuttle's words found in "Big Backyard", a modern-day homage to Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land".

Charlottesville, Virginia, native Bronwyn Keith-Hynes

Charlottesville, Virginia, native Bronwyn Keith-Hynes

Molly Tuttle, who may be regarded as one of the best flat pickers and hammer claw guitar performers of her generation, came to The Birchmere with a new album, Crooked Tree, and a new band, Golden Highway. This bluegrass band has an effervescently and exuberantly joyful sound, and over the past year, they have showcased their talents to packed venues. The band, including Tuttle, is composed of five musicians: Bronwyn Keith-Hynes (fiddle), Dominick Leslie (mandolin), Shelby Means (bass), and Kyle Tuttle (banjo). The group met during Tuttle's days in the greater Boston area. Each of the musicians are exceptional talented in their own right, but as a group, they are greater than the sum of its parts. They are fueled by a passion for their music, performing together, and the spectacular jamgrass interactions during their performances. It is worth noting that although Bronwyn Keith-Hynes now resides in Nashville, Tennessee, she originally hails from Charlottesville, Virginia. It fills our DMV hearts with joy to see her return once again to her home region.

Molly Tuttle

Molly Tuttle

This performance was not Molly Tuttle's first appearance at The Birchmere. She recalled how the Birchmere was one of the first places she performed when venues first started opening up again as the pandemic waned and how special it was for her to perform in May 2021. Adding to Tuttle's affection and connection to The Birchmere, she recalled later in the evening how she grew up listening to The Seldom Scene from Bethesda, Maryland, and how she grew up listening to one of their recordings from The Birchmere.

Supporting the show, DownRiver Collective, the opening act, performed a mix of original songs and covers, including a rousing version of "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac. They shared stories of lockdown memories when they recorded and released a Molly Tuttle song and were so grateful to now be opening for her.

Molly Tuttle

Molly Tuttle

Tuttle and her newly formed bluegrass collective put on a masterclass performance of bluegrass and jamgrass magic on stage. Tuttle greeted the audience when she first took to the stage by telling the audience how happy she was to be back at The Birchmere with her new band and her new album. The group spent the evening segueing through a diverse setlist that included songs from Crooked Tree, as well as beautifully delivered versions of "Wait a Minute" by The Seldom Scene, and exuberantly interpreted versions of "She's A Rainbow" by The Rolling Stones and "Olympia, WA" by Rancid.

Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway during another energetic jam!

Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway during another energetic jam!

The evening's performance illustrated why Tuttle & Golden Highway have been so well received at each performance. Tuttle's golden voice and stellar flatpicking echoed through the halls of the Birchmere, as Bronwyn Keith-Hynes's fiddle shone brightly, Kyle Tuttle's banjo and Cheshire cat grin radiated on stage, Dominick Leslie's mandolin solos captivated, and Shelby Means's bass kept the group steadily moving forward. Tuttle's studio albums are beautifully crafted recordings, but her live performances are where she and her band truly come to life, and they masterfully interact with one another and delight the audience in the process. Keith-Hynes was the chief instigator of musical duels and improvisations with her fellow band members throughout the evening. Not to be outdone, Shelby Means would bring the audience and her bass to their knees by playing her mighty instrument all the way down to the floor.

Shelby Means, one fierce cowgirl from Wyoming

Shelby Means

The evening had its more serious and relatable moments. Tuttle talked about going home and things not being the same before she sang "San Francisco Blues". Many of us can relate to her lyrics and the old adage of you can't go home again. Things are never the same as they used to be - all of your childhood friends long since moved away, and not being able to afford to live in your beloved hometown. Our favorite Wyoming cowgirl, Shelby Means, spoke from the heart about singing a "cowgirl equality song, cause we could all use some equity right now." This statement, a not too subtle reference to the Supreme Courts' recent ruling on Roe v. Wade was greeted by huge applause before she sang a spirited "Side Saddle".

Shelby Means, one fierce cowgirl from Wyoming

Shelby Means, one fierce cowgirl from Wyoming!

Tuttle ended the night's performance with one of her most uplifting and unifying songs, "Big Backyard." Just as Tuttle has spent the last few months visiting venues across the country, her song was an uplifting and inspiring way to end an evening and sent the audience home with joy and beaming with delight. As Guthrie sang, "The voice come a-chanting and the fog was lifting", Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway is truly that uplifting voice that helps lift the fog of day-to-day life.

This performance was not Molly Tuttle's first appearance at The Birchmere, and based upon her heartfelt affection for the venue and how she was received, it will most certainly not be her last. We look forward to once again enjoying an exhilarating performance in the big backyard that Tuttle and her immeasurably talented band provide for us.

Peter Mulvey And SistaStrings - "Love Is The Only Thing"

Peter Mulvey And SistaStrings Share First Song From Upcoming “Love Is The Only Thing” as SistaStrings Come To Merriweather Post Pavilion on August 18th

With a galloping guitar and a concrete backbeat on the snare drum, “You and (Everybody Else)”—the first offering from Peter Mulvey & SistaStrings’ upcoming album, Love Is The Only Thing—takes no time getting off to the races.

"John Sieger and I sat down to bust this one out quickly,” remembers Mulvey. “The song announced itself as lean and loping: very few words, all energy, a two-beat measure.” Easing into the second verse, the cello and violin from SistaStrings’ Monique Ross and Chauntee Ross sneak in, adding another meaningful texture to the sparse but purposeful tune. Throughout, the mood is jovial, reflected in Mulvey’s delivery of the song’s lyrics.

Peter Mulvey And SistaStrings - "Love Is The Only Thing"

Love Is The Only Thing out August 12, 2022

“We were pleased to get both a Tibetan Buddhism reference—‘hungry ghosts’—and a Black Sabbath-style rhyme—where you rhyme a word with...itself!—into the third verse,” says Mulvey, proudly. SistaStrings delivered the song’s crowning theme with post-refrain, descending string line that would be equally at home on a later Led Zeppelin album as it would in America’s bluegrass songbook. “It makes the whole song,” Mulvey decrees.

Fans can listen to “You and (Everybody Else)” today at this link and pre-order or pre-save Love Is The Only Thing ahead of its August 12th release.

Fantastic Negrito Digs Deep Into His Roots and Captivates 9:30 Club [PHOTOS]

Three-time Grammy Award and NPR Tiny Desk winner Fantastic Negrito delivered a passionate and fiery performance at 9:30 Club in Washington, DC on June 22. The accomplished blues/funk/R&B icon released his most ambitious work to date – touring in support of White Jesus Black Problems, a genre-defying album that focuses on Negrito's ancestral history – particularly the everlasting love shared by his white grandmother (an indentured servant) and his black, enslaved grandfather in 1750's Virginia. His familial history tells a story that is still frighteningly relevant in this country today but focuses on his grandparents' resilience and quest for freedom. Check out the masterpiece album film here.

Negrito and his talented band embark on a 15-date European tour next month before returning to the DMV area on September 15 at Maryland Hall in Annapolis, MD. Check out his full schedule here and don't miss your chance to see a musical genius in his prime!

Howlin Rain Howls With The Wolves At Wolf Trap

When The Black Crowes came to Wolf Trap on June 23rd, 2022, they brought with them West Coast-based Howlin Rain. The Black Crowes may have started their performance with "Twice As Hard," but Howlin Rain was certainly working twice as hard to earn new fans and introduce themselves to bigger East Coast audiences.

Howlin Rain was founded in 2004 in Oakland, California, by frontman Ethan Miller, this band has become one of the quintessential independent rock and roll bands in America.  Bands are simply not built like this anymore - guitar-forward, hard-charging full-on rock & roll thunder. Howlin Rain is composed of Ethan Miller (vocals, guitar), Kyre Wilcox (bass, backing vocals), Justin Smith (drums, backing vocals), and Jason Soda (guitar, backing vocals). Their sound owes a deep credit to the influences of the powerful blues-rock of West Coast 1970s rock and also draws from a rich musical lineage going back several generations of rock and roll. They share a sound space similar to The Black Crowes and The Rolling Stones. Just as a flower's nectar attracts a bee, the sound and style of Howlin Rain have attracted notable collaborators who were drawn to the band's sound. Collaborators have included Adam MacDougall (Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Circles Around the Sun), legendary violinist Scarlet Rivera (Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review), and Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes).

Throughout their career, Howlin Rain has crisscrossed the United States performing upon countless stages, crafting their mass-moving funk stomp with stellar band interactions and jams. During their travels, Howlin Rain has ventured beyond our native shores and has spent more than one occasion journeying across the Atlantic Ocean to perform on stages across Europe. All these experiences have prepared this band to take the next step and step into the limelight of larger stages, and they were ready when The Black Crowes asked them to open three performances on their "Shake Your Money Maker" 2022 Tour.

Within the first minutes of Howlin Rain's performance at Wolf Trap, there was little doubt as to why the Crowes asked them to open for them. The quartet appeared on stage and plugged in, ready to give the audience thirty minutes of pure musical muscle. But, of course, with their vintage sound, one had to take notice and check to see if there were matching period curly guitar chords dangling from their guitar jacks - we checked, and we were a little surprised that no curly chords were found swaying in the wind.

The band played a ferocious performance that lasted a scant thirty minutes with little pause or respite except for moments when they acknowledged and expressed gratitude to the growing audience.  The band was clearly enjoying themselves and delighted in the size of Wolf Trap's stage and performing in front of such a large crowd. Bassist Kyre Wilcox, in particular, thoroughly enjoyed playing to the crowd. As Ethan Miller snarled out lyrics, Krye swaggered from end to end of the stage, collaborating with his bandmates, letting his hair flip with reckless abandon, and capturing the crowd's attention.

We watched as Wolf Trap patrons packed their picnics bags early so they could enter the pavilion to see Howlin Rain's perform. This band did not require a special light show for their performance - they just needed electricity for their instruments and were prepared to play their hearts out to set the stage for The Black Crowes and fans throughout the venue.

Their performance embodied relentless and hard-driving rock and roll, complete with peaking guitar solos, hair flips, dynamic band interactions, and heart-stomping rhythms.

As powerful as the music was, we listened intently to the complex lyrics sung to us. Howlin Rain's music is as articulate and complex as its sound is powerful.

Lyricist and Howlin' Rain's frontman Ethan Miller

“In the evening the trains go by, and shake the dust from dirty walls, sometimes I feel like a spider in an old mason jar, who threatens only convex light from down the hall. I’ve been lost to the world since the photos of the black hole, landed on my desktop screaming, perhaps the all and nothing all-in-one is just too much to take, for particles and matter that never found their way.”

And in a blink of an eye, their performance was over - thirty minutes of hard-rocking musical bliss. With music as robust and energetic as Howlin Rain's, it left us wanting more and knowing that the band could have easily delivered more. Although Rock & Roll is known for breaking many rules, keeping to schedules and curfews is something not to be disregarded. By the applause throughout Wolf Trap, we know that Howlin Rain made many new fans who eagerly await their return to the region. We hope you, like us, keep Howlin Rain on your radar and keep an eye open for their eventual return to the DMV.

Tears for Fears perform at Merriweather Post Pavilion on June 19, 2022

Tears for Fears Have One More Story To Tell At Merriweather Post Pavilion

Tears for Fears came to Merriweather Post Pavilion as part of their "The Tipping Point" World Tour on June 19, 2022, to promote their latest album, The Tipping Point, released on February 22, 2022. For good measure, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith brought Garbage with them on the North American leg of their world tour.

This powerhouse lineup came to Columbia, Maryland, on a beautiful, sunny day, with hardly a trace of the usually oppressive DC Metro Area summer humidity. A near-capacity audience was prepared to spend Juneteenth and Father's Day enjoying a beautiful day at Merriweather Post Pavilion, as lawn chairs and picnic baskets filled the green slopes above the pavilion.

At 7:30 p.m., Garbage took to the stage and was greeted by a thunderous roar of admiring fans. Garbage was eager to showcase new material from their latest album, No Gods No Masters, released in June 2021.  Shirley Manson came on stage with her hands over her heart, genuinely touched by the roaring ovation and adoration displayed by the crowd. Throughout the 60-minute performance, Manson repeatedly told the audience precisely how much she appreciated them and mentioned she had not seen a gathering this big since the now-defunct 1995 HFStival. Manson showed why she is arguably the most dynamic and captivating figurehead of any band right now. Fans, captivated by her stage presence, hung on her every word as she talked with the audience in her engaging Scottish brogue.

By the third song, "Stupid Girl," the band really started to wind up the energy in the room. Manson emotionally dedicated their performance of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" to Depeche Mode's  Andy "Fletch" Fletcher, who passed away just last month. Manson and the band were clearly enjoying themselves on stage and relishing every moment of their performance. Manson had her husband grab a whiskey from offstage and offered up a "Slainte Mhath" (Cheers!) to him and all fathers. Manson went on to wish a "Happy Fathers Day from Europe to here. Life is short. Seize the moment. Happy Juneteenth! Long live the health of this Nation." After Tears for Fears concludes their US tour, Garbage will forge ahead alone on their North American tour. This performance filled with moxie and intensity was just a wee taste of the powerful performance awaiting audiences on the remainder of their summer tour dates.

Roland Orzabal

At 9 p.m., Tears for Fears took to the stage with deafening applause, and Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal would once again show audiences why they are an iconic and timeless band whose music has been deeply ingrained in the musical fabric of the world since the early 1980s. In their heyday, their music spilled out of pop radio stations and music television stations around the globe. Over the past four decades, this synth-pop duo out of Bath, England, has produced spectacularly crafted multi-layered synth-pop songs that resonate so deeply in the hearts of fans worldwide. Tears for Fears' sustained musical resonance was on full display during their performance at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Tears for Fears' music is resonating with a new generation. One could see both older fans who undoubtedly fell in love with Songs from the Big Chair in the 1980s and younger fans, some of whom knew every lyric to every song, including songs from their latest album.

Roland Orzabal
Curt Smith

The last time Tears for Fears performed in America was in 2017 for their tour, highlighting their compilation album, "Rule the World: the Greatest Hits." This performance would be their first at Merriweather Post Pavilion since 1990.  In 2022, they are promoting their new critically acclaimed album, "The Tipping Point." Of course, it is hard for any artist to showcase new material to fans, especially when you have a song catalog as deep and beloved as Tears for Fears does. Orzabal, the band's principal lyricist, always writes personal, heartfelt songs for the time. Because of this and their recognizable musical sound, these latest songs masterfully dovetailed and intertwine seamlessly into their musical cache. It would be easy for an act as revered as Tears for Fears to comfortably slip into embracing the nostalgia of their heyday and paying homage only to their songs of yesteryear. Instead, Orzabal and Smith came to Merriweather Post Pavilion, showcasing seven songs off of the new album. The new material was embraced by fans, both young and old(er).

Curt Smith

Tears for Fears' songs are not only known for their masterfully crafted, distinctive, and elaborate music but also for their poignant and deeply personal lyrics. The opening song, "No Small Thing," speaks volumes about the band's intent and feelings about coming to the United States once more. "But I've just one more song to sing / One more story to tell / ... / Take a trip to America / Let the wind blow right through your hair / We'll buy beer and some hope to share." Indeed the band had one more song to sing, one more story to tell, and the audience was delighted to listen to them as they shared that "one more story" for the next two hours. Next, the band introduced the title track of their latest album, "The Tipping Point." The audience danced deeply to this infectious new song as the breathtaking light show roared to life behind them. Then, having already reached a feverish pitch a mere two songs into the performance, Tears for Fears decided to hit the audience with one of their biggest songs, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." As one person was overheard saying, "You gotta hit them up front with a classic and let them know exactly why they came here tonight and not leave that for the encore." In fact, there was a significant amount of buzz and online chatter about Tears for Fears' latest tour, as concert experiences and performance details have been gleefully shared among fans since they started this tour in Cincinnati, Ohio, in May 2022.

Curt Smith & Roland Orzabal clearly enjoining themseles

Orzabal and Smith were clearly enjoying their time among their fervent fanbase and shared some heartfelt and genuine connections throughout the evening with their fans. At one point, a visibly moved Smith took a moment between songs to talk to two young fans, who had been singing along to all of the songs, including the new material. Smith asked, "How old are you?" The young fan replied she was thirteen, and he commented how her enthusiasm for their material warmed his heart. Smith continued chatting with this family in the crowd, talking with this avid young fan and her equally animated eight-year-old younger sister, who was equally as fervent in singing along to each song. Finally, with a softness in his eye, Smith wished their father and all fathers in the audience a happy Father's Day. After the encore, drummer Jamie Wollam would hand his drumsticks to these two fans to cherish as permanent souvenirs of this magical evening.

Curt Smith & Roland Orzabal
Lauren Evans

The band continued delicately and selectively weaving their way through their catalog until they reached their eighth song of the evening, "Break The Man." This infectious song was the catalyst for an all-out euphoric dance party throughout the venue. This rhythmic and powerful new instant classic would set mark one of many ecstatic and joyful moments of this performance. Orzabal and Smith's voices are still youthful, vibrant, and impressive as ever. This duo brought along a band of three skilled backing musicians, Charlton Pettus (guitar), Doug Petty (keyboards), Jamie Wollam (drummer), and formidable backup singer Lauren Evans. Evans had her time to shine alone during "Suffer The Children" and once again during "Woman in Chains." The first half of this duet with Orzabal was transformed into a solo performance as Orzabal turned his back to the audience to cast the spotlight on Evans alone.

Lauren Evans

As the band deftly maneuvered through their rich catalog, they not only performed animated and upbeat synth-driven songs but also balanced the upbeat songs with more poignant songs, including "Long, Long, Long Time" and a heartfelt, raw, and timely "Rivers Of Mercy" - such is the depth and breadth of Tears For Fears' repertoire.

Curt Smith & Roland Orzabal

After performing for 90 minutes, the band concluded their performance with yet another emblematic classic from Songs From The Big Chair, "Head Over Heels / Broken." Twenty-thousand plus fans gleefully sang into the night along with Orzabal. However, fans did not want the evening to end, and cell phone camera lights appeared from every corner of the venue, stretching from the front of the pavilion all the way to the very back of Merriweather's lawn.

Roland Orzabal

The band would not disappoint, as they came on stage for their encore to perform another masterpiece from their latest album, "End Of Night." However, this song was not the end of the night but rather the kick-off of a euphoric three-song encore. The band quickly segued into "Change" off of their 1983 debut album, The Hurting, before ending the evening with their first break-out hit and perhaps one of the most memorable songs in their catalog, "Shout." If one thought that the evening's sing-alongs and fan-led choruses were over, every ounce of enthusiasm poured out into the air as the band and fans ferociously and passionately sang along to a cavernous chorus, "Shout, shout, let it all out / These are the things I can do without / Come on, I'm talking to you, come on," as a surging bass and drum beat propelled an extended "Shout" into the night.

Roland Orzabal

This performance was precisely the things that the audience could NOT do without. Performances like this have been precisely the reason for so much joyful discussion amongst fans over the last month.

Like so many others, we enthusiastically look forward to the next time Tears for Fears returns to our region in the years to come. We can only hope that Tears For Fears will continue to have more than one song to sing, more than one story to tell, and one more trip to America left in them.

Until then, we shall all continue sowing the seeds of love, with their music being a jubilant guidepost to our hearts.
