Photographic Artist Spotlight – Grateful Dead & Beyond

The Grateful Dead are an instrumental part of the American musical landscape and among the founding fathers of "Jam Band" music.  Their influence can be found in so many bands in the 50 plus years that they have been around.  Sadly Jerry Garcia died on August 9, 1995, but after a brief hiatus members started forming their own bands and breathing new life into the Grateful Dead music.  In 2015, remaining members of the Grateful Dead reunited for a 50th Anniversary Fare The Well series of shows as Dead & Company.  Since then Dead & Company, with a slight lineup change, has toured regularly while Phil Lesh continues to tour with his Terrapin Family Band.

Artist Spotlight

Greensky Bluegrass

Greensky Bluegrass is a five-piece bluegrass band founded in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  Originally three members, the band soon evolved into a five piece band. Greensky Bluegrass is Paul Hoffman (mandolin), Dave Bruzza (guitar), Michael Bont (banjo), Anders Beck (dobro), and Mike Devol (double bass). In addition to a large catalog of original material, Greensky Bluegrass is known for transforming the songs of other artists into inspired bluegrass interpretations. On any given night, you can expect this band to play covers from a wide array of artists including Dire Straits, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Van Morrision, Phish, Bruce Springsteen, and the Traveling Wilburys amongst others. In late 2017, shortly after the passing of Tom Petty,  Greensky Bluegrass performed an inspired version of "Breakdown".  Fans of this band are known as 'Campers' and chances are if you are reading this page, you are a Camper too!
The DMV is very fortunate to have them come back year after year to the 9:30 Club for a run of shows.  In 2017 they were the first band to open and christen the Chrysalis Amphitheater in Symphony Woods right aside Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, Maryland.

AZTEC SUN performs at their 5 Year Anniversary Show

AZTEC SUN celebrates their 5 Year Anniversary at Gypsy Sally’s

AZTEC SUN 5 Year Anniversary Poster

Five years ago in a simple twist of fate, five musicians, having responded to the same Craigslist ad looking for musicians, met and formed a band. This group then became AZTEC SUN. Since that night, this band has found their voice, their sound, and their fans. The band has since grown in size, and while some of the members have come and gone, one thing remains constant -  an enthusiastic and passionate commitment to “Funk with Soul”.

Today, the band is comprised of: Stephane Detchou (vocals, rhythm guitar), Sara Ghebremichael (vocals), Ryan 'Catch' Sarafolean (keyboards), Ray Lamb (lead guitar), Shane Weckesser (bass), Graham Robertson (baritone saxaphone), Adam Kent (trumpet), Joe Goltz (trombone), and John Heinze (drums).

AZTEC SUN has progressed through the ranks of the DC area's music scene, building one success upon another, evolving their sounds and their stage presence.

Still basking in the afterglow from their earlier performance, opening for Everyone Orchestra and giving one of their most memorable performances to date, Aztec Sun took to the stage at Gypsy Sally's on December 28 as confident, road-warrior veterans. One could not help but notice how the band exuded a strong stage presence, filled with showmanship, enthusiasm, and a passion for their craft. The evening  kicked off with legendary DC musician Ron Holloway and The Ron Holloway Band. As Aztec Sun took the stage, concert goers filled the dance floor to move to the music, as the band interacted with the audience.

To help mark the band’s fifth year anniversary, past band member Sam Hall and other musical friends, Sol Roots, Noah Bein, and Parabellum Raps performed with Aztec Sun.

Sprinkled throughout the performance, Stephane Detchou, ever the showman with stylish flair, interacted with and energized the audience. During the drum switch by Heinz and Hall, Detchou announced that “we are going to do a little switch-a-roo and keep the flavor going!” In a wind up to a particularly energetic and danceable song, Detchou invited the audience closer to the stage, saying “We got more room for good ju-ju and dancing up here.”  The evening ended with AZTEC SUN's energetic, powerful, and soaring “Love, Call On Me”. This moving song leaves those in attendance out of their seats, only wanting more.

DC Music Review congratulates AZTEC SUN on a wonderful five years and wishes them much success in the year to come.

AZTEC SUN would like to thank the following past band members, who have helped get the band to where they are today:   Sam Hall, Galen Pardee, Art Cold, Ryan Schleeter, David Klein, Michael Dranove, Seth Wooten, Gabe Maser, and Lee Anderson.

Roosevelt Collier Trio + Guests pay homage to Jimi Hendrix in DC [Audio/Video/Photo]

The Roosevelt Collier Trio performed "Jimi Meets Funk", a tribute to Jimi Hendrix, on December 14 at Pearl Street Warehouse in Washington, DC. Local guitarist Sol Roots opened the bill on a night that featured a bevy of special guests throughout the night, including Carly Harvey (vocals), Mike McHenry (guitar) and DC legend Ron Holloway (tenor saxophone).

Roosevelt "The Dr." Collier, hailing from southern Florida, put his pedal steel mastery on display to the delight of the crowd . The trio ripped through a set of fantastic Hendrix tunes including Power of Soul, Spanish Castle Magic and Them Changes.

The funk outfit closed out the evening with a serious take on Funkadelic's "Good to Your Earhole", featuring Sol Roots, Mike McHenry and Ron Holloway. Check out full audio of another powerful night of music in the District below!

TAUK + The Southern Belles rage the Charleston Pourhouse on December 28, 2017

TAUK began their New Year's Eve run at the Charleston Pour House on Thursday, December 28 for the first of two nights on the South Carolina coast. The instrumental rock, funk, and jam quartet brought Richmond, VA natives, The Southern Belles, with them as support for night one. The Belles opened with a powerful set featuring original tunes from their previous two albums that had the audience's attention from the start. TAUK followed with two meaty sets, warming up the packed house on a chilly night in Charleston. Check out the setlists and photo galleries below.

John Kadlecik Band - December 28th - Batlimore Soundstage

John Kadlecik Band Rocks the Baltimore Soundstage in a New Year’s Eve Windup! [Photo/Audio]

On December 28th, 2017 the John Kadlecik Band returned to Baltimore for the start of their New Year’s Eve run with another spellbinding performance. Since 2010, the John K. Band has been touring with various well-known musicians sitting in, and this particular line-up was no exception. Joined by Jay Lane of Ratdog, Furthur and Primus fame on drums, Robin Sylvester, most well-known for his contributions to the band Ratdog on bass, and Benjie Porecki (keys), who has played with such greats as Stevie Wonder and Buddy Guy among many others. This was a stellar collaboration in my humble opinion.

John Kadlecik Band at Baltimore Soundstage

John Kadlecik, a co-founding member of Dark Star Orchestra and member of the super group Furthur, is renowned on the scene for his ability to replicate Jerry Garcia, both vocally and instrumentally. This was proven again tonight; as always, with every single heartfelt lick that filled the Baltimore Soundstage.

From the first moment of the show, the hard-hitting guitar riffs and the organ - along with the smile that crept upon the face of the man standing next to me -proved that this show was going to be fantastic. The crowd started bopping around and the vitality immediately surfaced as the band broke into an energetic cover of the George Harrison favorite “Any Road.”

Throughout the set, the liveliness grew as we heard a mix of original songs such as “Golden Wings” and “Seen Love,” but the real standouts were the crowd-pleasing Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band covers that one can literally shut their eyes during and think they are actually at a Jerry Garcia show. The first of the set was “Ramble On Rose.” As soon as the first bass line hit, the spirit of the onlookers quadrupled. The guitar and keyboard solos were some of the best I have had the pleasure to hear and the devoted fans definitely agreed. As the song came to a crescendo, every single person in the room was dancing in rhythm to the beloved song they know so well and in sync with the band. Everyone screamed out the lyrics in unison. “Goodbye Mamma and Papa, Goodbye Jack and Jill” they sang, and from that moment on, it only got better. As the song endedand it got quiet, one fan screamedout, “You’re a beast, man!” No one in this audience coulddisagree.

As the first set continued, we heard John Kadlecik magically channel Jerry Garcia both vocally and with every high octave guitar solo to accompany it during “Lazy River Road” and “So Many Roads”, which was done so beautifully that I could feel my eyes welling up with tears. This particular song was the stand- out of the night for me, due to the incendiary organ skill of Porecki. Throughout the night, he impressed me over and over again as he alternated from organ to keyboard to synthesizer. And the first set closer of “Don’tLet Go” was no exception. It was a funky version for which Porecki opted to use synthesizer keys and the spectators loved it. Everybody was bouncing around merrily, bringing an exhilarating and fulfilling first set to a close.

As the band walked back onto the stage to start the second set, the applause was loud and the fans were eager. What we subsequently heard was no disappointment to our anticipation. The set opened immensely upbeat and lively with Van Morrison’s "Alan Watts Blues" into another John Kadlecik original, “Sister Smiles” which was very reminiscent of a Phish jam. From there, the quartet burst into an implausible “Help On the Way>Slipknot” and, surprisingly to the audience, a fanciful version of The Who’s “Join Together” in lieu of the traditional fan favorite “Franklin’s Tower.” There was no disappointment with this decision, especially when the song spiraled straight into another cherished tune, “Dark Star.” Although it wasn’t a 25-minute version, it was tight and sounded superb, and it seamlessly flowed right back into “Join Together”, before exploding into “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad.” The crowd again, and not surprisingly, erupted into dance. The 50’s-esque keyboard riffs alone in this tune were so insane, it was impossible to stop boogeying, again demonstrating the versatility of Porecki. With the intensity of this song, you would have thought it would be the set closer, but there was more to come.

We next heard a Crosby & Nash tune “Page 43” that progressed into the most delightful reggae style version of the Grateful Dead classic “Ripple.” This was the second set closer and no one in the place was ready for the end. As the applause steadily filled the room, the group filed back on to the stage to play just one more tune for this devoted assembly. The encore that followed took us straight to the promised land with the Charles Johnson favorite “My sisters and Brothers,” which has been a staple of the Jerry Garcia Band fordecades.

From start to finish, the diversity of this group transitioning from one style of music to another as smoothly as a well-oiled machine kept me on my (twinkle) toes the entire night, as it did for so many others. Not a single patron left this show without a huge grin and tired legs. Hopefully this collaboration will return to Baltimore and share their exceptional talent with us again.

Yellow Dubmarine Celebrates their 5th Annual Holiday Party at The Hamilton

Yellow Dubmarine performs at The Hamilton Concert Poster

To borrow from “Lucy in the sky with diamonds”, picture yourself in a venue near a river, with tangerine trees and reggae vibes. Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, a Beatles band with dub in their eyes.

Yellow Dubmarine coversthe songs of thetimeless band, The Beatles, but with their own unique dub (reggae) flair and brass components.

On December 22, Yellow Dubmarine performed at The Hamilton for their 5th annual holiday performance.

The band, based out of Washington, DC is composed of eight talented musicians: Jonathan Sloane (guitar, vocals), Aaron Glaser (bass, vocals), Robbie Cooper (drums, vocals), Luke Schuster (keys, vocals), Jason Budman (percussion), Mario D'Ambrosio (saxophone), John Morgan (trombone), and Daniel Davis (trumpet).

Throughout the show, projected light images paid tribute to the “Fab Four”, ranging from classic Beatle photos and silhouettes, to in honor of the holiday season, reindeer pulling the iconic yellow submarine, in lieu of a sleigh. Further adding to the TheBeatles themewas bassist Aaron Glaser, who performed on a Hofner ‘Violin’ bass, the bassfor which Paul McCartney has become synonymous with.

Yellow Dubmarine performed a wide breadth of the Beatles catalogue, including A Hard Day’s Night andLet It Be. The evening was filled many classic sing-alongs in which the audience gleefullyparticipated.During the particular sing-alongof“Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da” the band further stoked the crowd by yelling “I can’t hear you all!”, that led the audience to sing even louder to this timeless song.

“Dear Prudence”, a heartfelt and uplifting classic kept that same feeling and sentiment played in the dub reggae style. This performance included a John Lennon song that was newly composed by Yellow Dubmarine, “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” just in time for this Holiday show.

One of the highlights of the show was “Tomorrow Never Knows”. Upon completion of the original psychedelic song, the band launched into a full jam session, highlighting the musicians' musical talents.

The main performance ended with an explosive “Hey Jude”, complete with an extended sing-along. The band re-emerged for an encore, to perform “I Want You (She's So Heavy)” This one song was not enough to satisfy the crowd, whocalled foradditional songs. The request for“Octopus’s Garden” from someone in the crowd must have struck a chordwith the band (no pun intended), who went on to perform this song as well.

The evening's show was truly an uplifting musical experience that left those in attendance in good spirits leading into the Christmas holiday weekend. As people walked out of the venue, they carried the concert with them and could hear themsinging many Beatles songs into the night.

DC Music Review looks forward to seeing Yellow Dubmarine at their 6th annual holiday performance at The Hamilton Live, if not sooner.

Click here to see Yellow Dubmarine's December 22, 2017 setlist.

Enjoy photos by our photographer Jason Herman.

Although we will argue that all music is better live, please sample Yellow Dubmarine's album, Abbey Dub, for a taste of this blissful music.
