Appaloosa Festival 2022 – A Beautiful Festival In The Spectacular Shenandoah Valley

THE SETTING:

The majestic setting of the Appaloosa Festival

While they’ve been welcoming people to the Skyline Ranch, for years, DC Music Review got the privilege of joining in on the fun at Appaloosa Roots and Music Festival for year lucky number seven, and lucky we were!  Nestled right in the nook of Front Royal, well-known entry point for the wondrous Skyline Drive and lands of the Shenandoah, the location alone is worth making the journey outside the city for.  A beautiful back drop of mountains all around, set up a deep-breaths worth of appreciation for the ability to be so close to this area year-round.

The majestic setting of the Appaloosa Festival

The Ranch itself boasts a motel-like building with swimming pool and playground that are inviting for all ages.  The festival adds the icing on that cake for families with it’s incredibly inviting bouncy-house obstacle course and kids stage programming to keep little minds, and more, occupied during time between sets on the main stage.

THE SCENE:

“So good to see you again!" at the Appaloosa Festival

A gathering of people that all seem to hug hello and tell each other, “So good to see you again!” it’s an obvious gathering of individuals that all started out as strangers and have grown to more after returning year and year again to the festival awarded “Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) Recovery Marketing Leverage Program” by the Virginia Tourism website.  Members of host band, Scythian, even remarked onstage about watching some of the younger people in attendance grow over the years and how happy it made them to be able to watch that happen.

“So good to see you again!" at the Appaloosa Festival

It’s hard to say what the average age of attendees to Appaloosa would be - there was everything from newborns to grandparents there with three generations in tow.  It made for a very relaxed atmosphere where everyone made room for everyone - dancing toddlers, teenagers spread out on blankets and adults wanting to stay comfortable and cool in their umbrella-covered camping chairs.

Smile! You're At Appaloosa!

Early rising wasn’t necessary either day, unless you wanted to attend the onsite mass they had Sunday morning, and that meant relaxation at campsites while cooking breakfast.  Smells of bacon and coffee filled the air as people gathered their needs for the day and meandered inside, where music on the main stage both days, didn’t start until 11:30am.

Smile! You're At Appaloosa!

THE MUSIC:

Hosting the festival since the beginning, Front Royal based band Scythian, were simply lovely hosts and put together a lineup of musicians playing roots, Americana, Celtic, and more that were a perfect mix for the two days.  They also added an unexpected treat, Flex Matthews, a local Northern Virginia artist, who sat in with several bands on Saturday adding the missing hip hop piece to the eclectic lineup.  Not his first rodeo doing so with Scythian, Flex also sat in first with Justin Trawick & The Common Good and followed with every band after that on the schedule for Saturday.

A new find at Appaloosa that I can’t get enough of now and that really got the crowd excited and moving, was Birdtalker.  Entertaining and very engaging with the crowd, the band told stories of creating music during pandemic, covered songs by artists like The Beatles and sharing a bit of the love story between two of its members.

It was blatantly obvious what the crowd was waiting all day for when Scythian was getting ready to take the stage Saturday night.  The crowd went from spread out over the festival grounds to all front and center in what seemed like a matter of minutes.  Irish dancers were ready to kick and jump, couples ready to swirl each other around in whatever space they had and everyone else ready to clap and sing along through an exciting setlist.

Teaching us the rules to the Irish Polka (don’t spill your beer) and telling tales of trips to Ireland, where if you walk in a pub with a fiddle, you get free Guinness, they also treated us to an 80’s tribute accompanied by an accordion.

Coming on to close out Saturday night was Everyday Everybody (formerly AZTEC SUN) who funked the crowd up with horns, soul and another guest appearance by Flex Matthews.  Strong musicians accompanied by strong vocals, as well, made for a great way to boogie yourself to bed at the end of night one.

Day two was full of amazing music and some second performances from the Gothard Sisters, ARBO, and Scythian.  The real treat of the day, in my opinion, was North Carolina native Presley Barker who had a voice and welcoming country demeanor that left us all wanting more.  With just a guitar, his younger brother and a bass guitar player, Presley impressed the crowd a considerable amount.  He not only wowed us with his ability to cover some of the greats throughout bluegrass and country music history, but also with originals such as “Middle of Somewhere”, which he said is a play on where he’s from in North Carolina - the middle of nowhere.

Later in the evening, Barker also shared the stage with singer-songwriter Molly Tuttle, which we later learned happened a few years back when Presley was just a mere twelve years old.  The two reunited and complemented each other incredibly well, with fiery fingers that played at speeds you should probably get a ticket for.  Tuttle’s skills in storytelling and song writing were more than obvious as she took the festival from day to night dressed in a sparkly white dress sharing the stage with nothing more than a microphone and guitar for most of her set.

A crowd gathered bigger and bigger as Tuttle played song after song in what seemed to pack a lot into just a ninety minute set.  An inviting attitude and a smile the whole way through, attendees seemed more and more entranced by the California natives set as the songs just kept coming.

Closing out the last night, Scythian returned to the stage to another roaring crowd that were just about covered in t-shirts with the bands name on them.

The crowd truly enjoyed every minute of this festival

Throughout the weekend, artists paid tribute to the hills of Virginia and the Shenandoah and reminded ticket holders why they continue to return to the area for the festival year after year.  The weather and setting are beautiful, the artists are so talented and offer such a wide variety and it’s a place where friends become family.

This is truly an incredible festival with a hometown feel and yet, at the same time, have such world class state-of-the art stage and festival production.  We cannot express enough how joyous it was to walk through the vendor booths, walk past the inflatable children air castles, take in the serene workshops and children activities, and also have a world class light show and sound system.

Appaloosa Festival is a magical festival! Members of Scythian perform at the family tent

We can all cheer and celebrate at Appaloosa Festival

We know where we are going to be Labor Day 2023 - Appaloosa Festival.

All The People Came Out For Gordon Sterling and the People’s Album Release Party

Gordon Sterling and the People came to Pearl Street Warehouse on September 2, 2022, to speak the truth, their truth, and celebrate the release of their latest album of the same name, Truth.  Adding to the community celebration was the beautiful power of a rare semi-acoustic set with Oh He Dead, who are truly spectacular, and for those who have not heard of Oh He Dead before, they should be on your radar.

Gordon Sterling and the People perform at Pearl Street Warehouse on September 2, 2022

Gordon Sterling and the People were founded back in 2020 and may have slipped under the radar to some as we dealt with a crazy period in time.  This period was a double edged sword for the band as they were forming and felt ready to take on the world - but the world would have to wait to hear the People.  This forced time off gave the band time to practice, perform on webcasts and submit an NPR Tiny Desk submission, and write and record Truth.

Natalie Brooke of Gordon Sterling and the People

Although the band is only two years old, Sterling drew from the DMV to assemble six incredibly talented musicians - Cliff Blum (guitar), Natalie Brooke (keys), Scott Clement (bass), David Ray (drums), and recently added vocalist Jenny Langer.  The Pearl Street Warehouse album release party was Jenny Langer's first live performance as a member of the People.

For nearly two hours, Gordon Sterling and the People basked in the glory of a venue filled with fans and relished the opportunity to perform the full breadth of their song catalog in addition to a few celebrated covers.  The merch booth was bustling with activity but there was one thing missing - Sterling told the audience that evening that the album had been released digitally but he did promise that one day a rare vinyl pressing of Truth would be available.  Vinyl pressing aside, Truth is an album that should be listened to, and if it were available on vinyl, we would recommend listening to this album until your diamond needle wore out.

Gordon Sterling and the People (L-R: , David Ray, Scott Clement, Cliff Blum)

If you missed the show, be sure to go see Gordon Sterling and the People live next time they play out  There is nothing better than a night of soulful and bluesy blissful funk with wailing vocals, fresh guitar licks, and Natalie Brooke's keyboard skills.  We would like to congratulate Gordon Sterling and the People on a wonderful new album, and we collectively look forward to the very best of days being ahead for this incredible band.

Appaloosa 2022
Festival News, Made in The DMV

Appaloosa Returns For A Labor Day 2022 Celebration

What a summer! Live music was back in full swing, and music lovers across the region took full advantage of its return.  We relished in the springtime mainstay Charm City Bluegrass Festival, had a DELightful time at DelFest and took enormous pleasure in all the live music throughout the region.  Hopefully, you, like us, had some difficult musical choices to make over the summer as music made its triumphant return

As the official end of summer approaches this weekend with Labor Day, we’re thankful that live music shows no signs of slowing down quite yet. Cooler temperatures will be a welcome change from the sweltering heat for sure.  Not only that, but we also get amazing events close to home like the upcoming roots music festival, Appaloosa in Front Royal, Virginia, just a short drive away from the Nation's Capital to look forward to.

Boasting a wide variety of genres and musicians, including Celtic/Americana host band Scythian, award-winning vocalist, guitarist, and banjo player Molly Tuttle, D.C.’s “funk with soul” band, Everyday Everybody (formerly AZTEC SUN), and many more.

Appaloosa 2022 Lineup

The family-friendly camping festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, September 3rd and 4th, respectively, and even invites those 12 and under to attend for free. Just over an hour outside the city, the festival offers plenty of fun for a quick trip out of town after re-adjusting to back-to-school schedules and traffic patterns. A kid's zone, beer garden, craft vendors, and four stages provide entertainment for the masses.

An added perk of the festival is the plentiful workshops available at the festival, which are put on by the Appaloosa Blue Ridge Arts Foundation (ABRAF).  This 501(c) non-profit organization was founded to reignite interest in roots music. The location of the festival is in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, which was once known for its rich musical heritage, and was a bluegrass mecca in the 1970s. Since then, interest in folk music has dwindled - but ABRAF hopes to rebuild the roots community by providing FREE music workshops all weekend.

If you would like to support ABRAF, and make a tax-deductible donation, you can do so here.

Make sure to click the links below to learn more and purchase tickets so that you can take part in the fun this Labor Day weekend!

The California Honeydrops perform at DelFest '14
Concert News

The California Honeydrops Are Coming To The Lincoln Theatre On November 9th

The California Honeydrops don't just play music—they throw parties. In 2022, The California Honeydrops performed their first headlining date at Red Rocks Amphitheater and have blown away audiences across the country during the many festival performances, including High Sierra, Burning Man, DelFest, and FloydFest, to name just a few. If you saw any of their performances at either DelFest or FloydFest this year, you know exactly what we mean!

Led by dynamic vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lech Wierzynski, the band draws on diverse musical influences, including San Francisco Bay Area R&B, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second line, to bring a vibrant energy to their shows.

The Honeydrops have come a long way since Wierzynkski and drummer Ben Malament  started busking in an Oakland subway station, but the band has stayed true to that organic, street-level feel. Listening to Lech sing, it can be a surprise that he was born in Warsaw, Poland, and raised by Polish political refugees. He learned his vocal stylings from contraband American recordings of Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and Louis Armstrong. With the additions of Johnny Bones (Tenor Saxophone / Clarinet), Lorenzo Loera (keyboards), and Beau Beaullieu  (bass), they've built a powerful full-band sound to support Wierzynski's bright amber honeylike vocals.

Assembling their five core members plus two to three more world-class musicians each show, the Honeydrops deliver an eclectic performance and innovative recording style, evident in the seven studio albums, three live albums, and two cover albums the band has released since forming in 2008.

The California Honeydrops - Soft Spot (Released October 7, 2022)

The California Honeydrops - Soft Spot (Released October 7, 2022)  Click on the image to pre-save this album.

Their highly anticipated forthcoming LP, Soft Spot, is set to release on October 7th, 2022, and coincides with a national tour - "Lil Bit Of Lovin' Tour 2022".

The California Honeydrops are set to perform on November 9th at The Lincoln Theatre in Washington, DC. Based on their appearances across the country this summer, we expect this will be an unforgettable night of music at The Lincoln Theatre. Trust us when we say that The California Honeydrops put on a fantastic show! So mark your calendars, buy your tickets, and get excited to get your Lil Bit Of Lovin' going on in November at The Lincoln Theatre!

This is just a small taste of what you can expect when The California Honeydrops come to The Lincoln Theatre in November!  That voice, that groove, and those tasty horns!

California-based AJ Lee & Blue Summit will open for The California Honeydrops.  This band performed at Charm City Bluegrass 2022 and they will certainly strike a match to the tinderbox of energetic music at The Lincoln Theatre!

The Afghan Whigs Are Coming To The 9:30 Club On September 14th

The Afghan Whigs are set to perform at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC on September 14th, 2022. This legendary band from Cincinnati, Ohio, is no stranger to the 9:30 Club, having performed at our beloved venue nine times before. The band's long history with the venue spans several decades. While they last performed at the 9:30 Club on September 9th, 2017, the first time they performed was at the original location at 930 F Street NW all the way back on August 13th, 1992.

It has been five years since their last appearance at the 9:30 Club, and the Whigs come to Washington, DC, supporting their latest and ninth studio album, How Do You Burn? This album is their first new music since 2017's In Spades and their first new music since the passing of Whigs guitarist Dave Rosser.

The Afghan Whigs - How Do You Burn? (Released September 9, 2022)

The Afghan Whigs - How Do You Burn? (Released September 9, 2022)

Since their inception in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1986, The Afghan Whigs have never played by the rules of convention. Against the plaid-and-grunge-shaded backdrop of the early-to-mid-'90s, the Whigs stood apart from their contemporaries for their love of R&B, soul, and hard-raging rock. All these years later, they still sound as good as ever with Greg Dulli's infatigable voice, as he dives into R&B influences shimmering in Hammond B-3 organ, never letting the dark and gritty side go, and going full stadium-ready anthems.

Have you listened to the released tracks off of How Do You Burn? Listen to that opening car-chase of "I'll Make You See God", on-your-knees redemptive soul-penetrating "Please, Baby Please", stadium-ready echo epic "A Line Of Shots", tortured lovers on "Domino + Jimmy", to an epic finale of "In Flames."  This is an album we really cannot wait to listen to when the full album is released on September 9th.

We are really looking forward to seeing The Afgan Whigs perform to a small audience of 1,200 fans at the 9:30 Club on September 14th only a few days after their latest album release.

Cris Jacobs Band performs at B Chord Brewing on August 6, 2022
Photo Recap

Our Love For Jerry Garcia And The Cris Jacobs Band Will Never Fade Away At B Chord Brewing

Across the country, Deadheads celebrated the life of Jerry Garcia, his music, and his legacy during the annual "The Days Between" celebration. During the weekend of August 6, 2022, Cris Jacobs, one of the most recognized artists in the DC-Baltimore region, celebrated Jerry Garcia and his work at both The 8x10 in Baltimore, Maryland, and at B Chord Brewing in Round Hill, Virginia. DC Music Review was fortunate enough to see Cris Jacobs and his namesake band, the Cris Jacobs Band, perform at B Chord Brewing in the foothills beside the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Fans gather at B Chord to watch the Cris Jacobs Band perform

Fans gathered around the stage at B Chord on a clear summer’s day, as the heat and humidity dissipated, allowing people to enjoy the outdoor venue. Concertgoers had the opportunity to gather along the gentle green slopes of B Chord, walk around barefoot, and dance joyously, as Jacobs and his band casually sound-checked before their performance. This picturesque day was a glorious departure from a typical DC muggy summer’s day, where, in the words of Jerry, “the sky was yellow and the sun was blue”.

Just after 7 pm, Jacobs and his band, Todd Herrington (bass), Corey Wells (guitar), Ben White (keyboards), and Dusty Simmons (drums), took to the stage. Jacobs delighted the crowd by telling them he would spend this evening performing the music of Jerry Garcia in addition to Cris Jacobs originals. For the next three hours, Jacobs would segue through Grateful Dead songs and intertwine seven of his own songs, including "Rooster Coop," "Kind Woman," "Holler and Hum," "Delivery Man," "Jack the Whistle and The Hammer," "Dragonfly," and "Devil or Jesse" into this powerful and display of musical prowess. Jacobs passionately sang Grateful Dead material while soulfully delivering his own songs as Herrington laid down unshakable bass lines as his face oscillated between a stank face and one of pure delight. At the same time, Corey Wells effortlessly played guitar solos as Dusty Simmons passionately and powerfully played behind his drum kit. Adding to the performance, keyboardist Ben White’s falsetto contributions had more than one neck turning to the stage, wondering if a female guest singer walked on to sing Donna Godchaux's parts.

The spectacular evening with the Cris Jacobs band concluded with "Not Fade Away." As an enthusiastic chorus of "Love is loving and not fade away" rose into the crisp evening air, it was clear how much the audience celebrated the life of Jerry Garcia and enjoyed the performance of Cris Jacobs and his band.

The Local Honeys Are Stopping Through The DMV On September 25th & 27th

For almost a decade The Local Honeys have been an integralpart of the Kentucky bluegrass musicscape.  And for more than ten years this duo comprised of  Linda Jean Stokley and Montana Hobbs have worked their craft, crisscrossed the country with the likes of Tyler Childers.  This September The Local Honeydrops make their way to The Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, Virginia, and The Howard Theatre, in Washington DC.

On July 15th, 2022, The Local Honeys released their debut self-titled album that features ten winsome vignettes of rural Kentucky, conjuring 90’s alternative sounds with hillbilly Radiohead lilts, soaring above layers of deep grooves and rich tones masterfully curated by longtime mentor Jesse Wells, a Grammy-nominated producer and musician who also happens to be a member of Tyler Childers’ band The Food Stamps.  The resulting album shows off The Local Honeys’ gifted way with words—particularly the playful colloquialisms and regional idiosyncrasies from their home in Kentucky—that simultaneously connect the past and present, old and new.

Throughout The Local Honeys, the duo demand to be interpreted as creators and storytellers, not just purveyors of tradition. Similarly, the sounds captured within the project cement their place as innovators and rule-breakers. Rollicking banjo meets overdriven guitar hooks and blue-collar rural grit is met with lush melodies and nimble harmonies; it’s a project filled with juxtaposition and it isn’t by accident. It’s reflective of who they are and who they run with.

Stokley and Hobbs ended up with the most nuanced, moody, deep-holler sound they have captured to date. “This is the first time we’ve actively gotten to express who we are and where we’re from” says Linda Jean, “The songs on the album speak for us,” adds Montana “they’re about what we know, reflections of us as people. We realized we have the power to add our own narrative into Kentucky music.”

Lost Dog Street Band - Lonesome Farewell Tour

The Local Honeys will be stopping in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Washington, DC, in support of the Lost Dog Street Band's "Lonesome Farewell Tour 2022."  Lost Dog Street Band is a husband and wife duo comprised of Benjamin Tod on guitar and vocals and Ashley Mae on fiddle.  Lost Dog Street Band is a country band with deep roots in punk rock providing for a unique sounds.

This sixteen-stop tour is certainly a hidden gem for music lovers of traditional Americana music.  Come out and see Lost Dog Street Band and celebrate The Local Honeys debut album as they come to The Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville on September 25th, and the Howard Theatre on September 27.

Joan Osborne Coming To The Hamilton To Celebrate The Days Between On August 7th

Grateful Dead co-founder Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942, and died on August 9, 1995.    Since this musical icon's death , Deadheads across the globe call the nine days in August between his birthday and his passing “The Days Between,” which has been traditionally seen as a time to celebrate and honor the music and memory of Garcia.

Having first taken over some of Jerry Garcia’s lead vocal duties on the Grateful Dead's 2003 reunion tour longtime Dead collaborator Joan Osborne is excited to play a very special evening featuring the music of Jerry Garcia.  Over the last two decades Osborne has performed with Phil Lesh, Phil Lesh & Friends, and Bob Weir.  Many of these legendary performances have been captured and collected online.  The following YouTube collection will give you a taste for what you can expect when Osborne, Jack Petruzzelli, and Marc Muller perform on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at The Hamilton in Washington, DC.

The Hamilton's performance comes fresh off the heals of Osbornes's latest album, Radio Waves, released on February 22nd, 2022. The 13-song album is a unique, hand-picked assortment of Osborne’s favorite and most captivating live appearances culled from 100+ radio station performances over her 25-year career.

Following the 2020 release of her critically acclaimed Trouble and Strife, Osborne canceled her touring plans and spent the lockdown like many others – visiting backburner projects and sorting through the contents of old, dusty shoeboxes.

What Osborne found buried deep within her closets are relics of those lost performances; time-capsule live recordings spotlighting the lightning-in-a-bottle dynamism that makes her a mesmerizing performer. The tracks of Radio Waves cover a wide range in style and source material, perfectly exhibited in the album’s bookends – starting with “Saint Teresa” from a KCRW session in 1995 and ending on a take of Sly and the Family Stone’s “Everybody is a Star” performed at KROQ in 2002.  Consistent throughout Radio Waves are Osborne’s bigtime silky voice, soulful and smooth instrumentation from the likes of veteran accompanists Andrew Carillo and Jack Petruzzelli, and a keen ear for heart-lifting song selections. Inspiring, stylistic choices span classics like Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s in Need of Love Today” and Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love”, as well as deeper cuts such as Bill Withers’ “Same Love That Made Me Laugh” and Toshi Reagon’s “Real Love”.

We look forward to celebrating "The Days Between"  with our music community as we both reflect on and celebrate Jerry Garcia - especially with Osborne at The Hamilton.
