DC9 Nightclub Transforms Into A California Psychedelic Time Machine When Mystic Braves Venture East

On Saturday, September 22nd, DC 9 Nightclub was transported back in time to the age of Aquarius as three psychedelic and groovy bands took to the stage - local Washington DC based The Beginners Mynd and LA based The Creation Factory and Mystic Braves. The packed venue did not lose any late night audience members as the swelling crowd continued dancing well into the wee hours of the morning as the Mystic Braves’ played a two-hour and 15 song set.

The audience slowly packed the venue, many donning period outfits, to see hometown psychedelic rocker, The Beginners Myde. As The Creation Factory took to the stage at 10 PM, the venue was at capacity.

At 11 PM, as the members of Mystic Braves climbed up on stage, we recognized some familiar faces. The tambourine player that The Creation Factory had allowed to wield an instrument, twirling about the stage and punching it into the air over his head at times to accentuate a song, was none other than Julian Ducatenzeiler - lead guitarist, singer, and frontman of Mystic Braves.

Julian Ducatenzeiler wasn’t the only familiar face - two other band members, Shane Stotsenberg and Ignacio Gonzalez, were also in the second opening band, and swapped instruments as well. When a one hour set is not enough, you know the musicians truly love what they do, and that was reflected in their comfortable and casual stage presence.

The Mystic Braves is psychedelic rock band from Los Angeles, Mystic Braves is a five person band consisting of Julian Ducatenzeiler (vocals, guitar), Ignacio Gonzalez (keyboard, percussion), Tony Malacara  (bass, vocals), Cameron Gartung (drums), and Shane Stotsenberg (guitar, vocals). With those LA looks and celestial vibes one wondered if they spoke with Jim Morrison and The Doors on the beach of Venice, California before packing up their tour van and headed east to perform for the audience along the Eastern Seaboard.

Tony Malacara's period bass guitar

A couple of beats of the drums, and a catchy melody picks up on the guitar, and their set begins with “Desert Island.” Their stage presence is laid back, yet engaging, and their style matched their retro sound. You can’t help but move to the music when you see and hear them playing. Their love for what they do is obvious. While their lyrics are not fully psych rock oriented, their sound certainly is, particularly the keyboard and the effects pedals.

Midway through the show the audience was shouting for, “Cloud Nine,” to which Ducatenzeiler replied they have that one for us, and a few more as well. He casually turned to his band mates and the audience nodding, and decided, “yeah, I think this is our best Washington, D.C. show so far.” The audience, already fired up, got even louder, and there was exciting electricity in the air.

"Cloud Nine" is one of oldest songs in the Mystic Braves catalog and actually predates their bands name and dates back to a time when they were called Blackfeet Braves. As fate would have it, as the Mystic Braves check into their hotel they happened upon another guest who had a vodka company - Cloud Nine Vodka.  Ducatenzeiler explained that they all shared a laugh with the owner as they explained they had a song called "Cloud Nine" As it turns out Cloud Nine Vodka is a regional liquor and is not sold in California.  Ducatenzeiler coyly  said they might have some Cloud Nine  at the merchandise booth at the back of the venue. We did not know which Cloud Nine to expect at their merchandise table.  We thought that perhaps the band was subtly trying to get audience members to head over and buy some of their merchandise. We could only assume it was a win-win situation as audience members could purchase some vodka or some great merchandise.

Julian Ducatenzeiler of The Mystic Braves

They ended their show, and our retro journey, with one of their more popular songs, “Bright Blue Day Haze.” It was an amazing show both visually, and musically. They stayed loyal to their fans by playing a mix of old tunes, and new jams from their newest album The Great Unknown released August 17, 2018, which we highly recommend.

Railroad Earth Helps Ardmore Music Hall Celebrate 5th Anniversary

On Thursday September 20th Railroad Earth (RRE) took to the stage at The Ardmore Music Hall for two full sets. This concert was part of the eight night Ardmore 5th anniversary celebration. The sight lines and acoustics at the Ardmore are excellent as everyone at this multigenerational capacity crowd had a great vantage point.

The Ardmore Music Hall has a close relationship with local brewery, Tired Hands, and is a popular meet-up location prior to most any show as it’s just across the street. A good number of thirsty Railroad Earth fans were seen at the brewery, warming up for the night’s show. Tired Hands participated in the 5th anniversary Celebration by making a collaborative beer, “Show of Hands” that was served exclusively at The Ardmore Music Hall throughout the anniversary week.

Some Hobos, as Railroad Earth fans are known, traveled hundreds of miles for the show and they were not disappointed. Mike Honig, a DC area fan, has been to almost 200 RRE shows all across the country. When asked about his love of Railroad Earth in general, and this show in particular, Honig said “I saw Railroad Earth opening for Sam Bush in '04 and was instantly hooked.  It's the melodies and lyrics, but maybe more it's the infectious energy of the crowd and band that sets the night on fire. Celebrating the Ardmore Music Hall's 5-year anniversary with Railroad Earth, and then taking home a cooler full of Tired Hands ales - priceless!”

Although the talented Andy Goesling (banjo, guitar) did not play this show, Jeremy Lawton of Big Head Todd And The Monsters once again joined the band playing keyboards and pedal steel guitar. As expected the band was tight and brought it all for this show. The rest of Railroad Earth are Todd Sheaffer (vocals/guitar), Tim Carbone (violin/guitar), John Skehan (mandolin), Carey Harmon (drums) and Andrew Altman (bass).

Railroad Earth started show with “Black Elk Speaks” rolling into a raging “Mighty River” getting the crowd cheering and dancing from the beginning. The second set started off with “Long Way To Go” and ended strong with “Warhead Boogie” and “Chasin’ A Rainbow”. A full 11 song second set pulled from their vast repertoire.  When the house lights came up after the “Storms” encore, the room full of Hobos excitedly recounted their favorite songs of the show.

After the Ardmore show the band packed up to head to Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion in eastern Tennessee where, as one of the festival headliners, they played The State Street Stage with half  the band in Virginia and the other half in Tennessee.

Active Bird Community Flocks to DC9 For A Night of Infectious Tunes and Camaraderie

Elementary schools pals and consequential lifelong friends, Tom D’Agustino (vocals, guitar), Andrew Wolfson (vocals/lead guitar), Quinn McGovern (drums), and Zach Slater (bass), formed their indie-rock band Active Bird Community back in 2005.

With a sound that is part 90s-throwback, part modern rock, Active Bird Community is reminiscent of Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Ra Ra Riot, and Twin Peaks, although they have a distinct sound that only comes with the cohesion and long-term friendship that these young twenty-somethings have.

With three albums under their belt already, their latest — Amends — boasts a new level of maturity and depth. Just as the name implies, their 2018 release is focused on healing. In a press release D’Agustino said:

“In the simplest of terms, Amends is a record about forgiveness. Forgiving your parents for splitting up, forgiving your friends for not always understanding you, learning to forgive yourself."

Their energy is infectious, and even newcomers will find something to sing and dance along to. With a loyal fanbase, we have no doubt that this latest tour will garner an even larger group of fans who are eager to watch the band rock and grow.

With moving forward comes moving on and growing. If Amends has anything to say about Active Bird Community’s future, we can guess that it’s bright and full of growth.

Active Bird Community hits the DC9 stage on Saturday, September 29. Come join the boys for a night of well-crafted and smartly-written tunes, as well as  infectious tunes that’ll be stuck in your head for the inevitable future.

The Festy Experience – The Best Family Friendly Festival That You Should Go To

For the rageaholic, stay up all night festival goers, sadly our season is coming to an end.  For the family that wants to experience the same fun and music minus the crowd, fear not, we have something special for you -the 'Telluride of the East' is coming in just two short weekends.  At a beautiful farm located in the heart of the Blue Ridge, at a time of year where the scenery is unbeatable, Infinity Downs Farm, which plays host to another festival with a much bigger crowd earlier in the season, gets a post Labor Day remodel to appeal to a much more family-oriented, mellow attendee.  While most go to a festival to disconnect and possibly disappear into a musical abyss, The Festy Experience does the opposite and cultivates an atmosphere enticing family to come together and reconnect.

The Festy Experience Schedule

The Festy Experience

Offering an easy, day experience or the option of spending the entire weekend at the farm, Festy offers multiple possibilities for people to come enjoy the music, meadow and friendly atmosphere.  The team at Festy works to make sure you can bring little ones along without worrying about being packed like sardines to see heavy hitters like Greensky Bluegrass, who plays Friday night.   They also take into consideration that there are folks who want to see performers that would normally headline other festivals, but at a much more feasible time, allowing bed times, other obligations and getting home with younger kids in tow a task easily attainable.

The Festy Experience

Partnering with Hearth Songs, a popular toy company, to bring a kids zone that is easily accessible while still being in perfect view of the stage means no having to miss out on any aspect of the festival.  A line up having the big names that the 2018 list boasts, due to excellent planning, you also never have to worry about missing out on one artist to see another.  Ricky Skaggs, Fruition, Billy Strings and the already mentioned Greensky are wrapping up a summer-long fun run, as far as touring goes, and get to welcome Fall in Virginia at Infinity Downs with some great company.

Also joining the fun to provide the entertainment between sets, is Nick Forester, co-host and founder of hit, music-centric podcast, eTown.  He'll be doing a special onsite version of the show he's calling Almost eTown, and also interviewing artists, providing more intimate access to the entertainment than some other big name festivals.

A festival on the smaller scale, that encourages you to come not only enjoy great music but also great company, also gets to claim one of the best places to be in the early October weekends home.  The Blue Ridge Moutains as the leaves change color and start to fall, has made countless lists of 'Best Places to Visit in the Fall Months' and it makes the road to Infinity Downs that much more beautiful and enjoyable to come and go from.  Pick a day with your favorite artist, pack the car and wind down Skyline Drive to enjoy breathtaking scenery.  Another perk of Festy is the completely affordable options for a day pass for every member of the crew without having to worry about all the planning necessary for a multi-night stay.  Unlike other crowds peaking at 20,000 plus, Festy keeps it on the smaller scale with only 7,000 - 8,000 tickets avaialable, which means that you can come spread out, dance your way to the front and meet folks that are easy to find again.

VÉRITÉ Is Ready To Show Richmond, VA Just Why Her EP Went Viral

VÉRITÉ, (noun) French

Truth; truthfulness

Brooklyn based Kelsey Regina Byrne, who performs under the pseudonym of VÉRITÉ, is bringing her electro pop earworms to Strange Matter in Richmond, VA this Monday, October 1.

Sticking true to her monicker, Byrne has captivated the Internet with her ability to pair her incredibly raw and relatable lyrics with catchy electronic hooks. The result is a hauntingly beautiful voice floating through words that cut straight to the core.

"Cause maybe I'm just addicted to
The things I lack and the way you move
In circles run, round a figure eight
Always running off meeting up in the same place"

-"Strange Enough" from VÉRITÉ's EP, Echo

The 28 year old's vulnerability has allowed her to reach heights previously unimaginable for an independent artist. Released just over a year ago, her debut EP Somewhere In Between has reached over 150 million streams on Spotify.

Missed your chance to hear her masterful cover of The 1975's "Somebody Else" when she opened for EDEN in Washington, D.C. this past Spring? Grab your tickets below and road trip down to Richmond this Monday to witness talent in its purest form—we recommend blasting her cover of Childish Gambino's "Sober" on the trip down.

Wide shot of FIDLAR performing at the 9:30 Club

FIDLAR Brings The LA Heat To The District

As the clock struck 10PM and the lights dimmed last Tuesday, September 18th,  the fans lining the edges of the 9:30 Club swiftly made their way to the middle of the floor. Surrounded by old school TV monitors, FIDLAR took to the stage to the backdrop of their logo stylized to resemble the graininess of the VHS era.

Hailing from what some would call "the land of broken dreams", Los Angeles, California, FIDLAR consists of Zac Carper (rhythm guitar, vocals), Brandon Schwartzel (bass, backing vocals), Elvis Kuehn (lead guitar, vocals), and Max Kuehn (drums).

Kicking off the night with one of the many love letters to substances that used to rule Carper’s life, the audience jumped and moshed to “Alcohol”.

"And I don't have a job
And I don't have a phone
Don't have a life
And I'm always stoned

Wake! Bake! Skate!

I'm so strung out I can't even see
Shit, it's so hard I can't even breathe"

- "Wake! Bake! Skate!"  from FIDLAR's self-titled debut album

Many of FIDLAR's songs focus in on the power that drugs and alcohol can have on an individuals life. From song titles such as "Cocaine" and "Wake Bake Skate" to an entire song dedicated to the itch to use heroin, the band gives their young audience a picture of the unorganized brain a drug addict lives with.

FIDLAR lead singer
FIDLAR lead singer

But the messiness of drugs and struggle with sobriety aren't the only themes that these four focus in on. Stopping for a quick chat mid-show, Carper commends the audience for their energy and respect for each other.

Next on the agenda: focusing in on the prevalence of sexual misconduct and abuse at concerts. Aiming to provide a safe space at the show, he further calls for a girls only mosh pit as the band launches into another song from their debut album, "5 to 9".

While FIDLAR is not to be mistaken for a garage band that only wants to mosh, they're also not to be mistaken for a punk band that constantly spews their political rhetoric at their fans.

After giving the male dominated audience a reminder to be diligent in preventing sexual assault at shows, the band smoothly transitioned into their "Are You High?", their newest release.

Pushing his lengthy dark brown locks behind his ears, Carper, motioned at the sweaty 9:30 Club crowd,

“Alright, everyone....this side, move to the left. And you guys, go to the right. Now everyone sit down. When this song picks up, you know what to do.”

FIDLAR bassist
FIDLAR bassist

With the music rapidly picking up, the exciement filling the room was palpable. Faces illuminated by the flashlights on their phones, the crouching audience readied themselves for the "Wall of Death" that was about to ensue.

Simultaneously jumping up and running at each other, the crowd moshed to their hearts content, a sweaty musk filling the venue. With smiles plastered across their flushed faces, the crowd filed outside, expended of all their youthful energy.

FIDLAR is currently on tour in North America until November. To learn more about the band, visit their website.
