The Sherlocks Come Back To DC After An Around The World Adventure

Catch the return of one of UK's hottest bands as they return to Washington DC's DC 9 Nightclub this Monday, 7 May. The Sherlocks are a British indie/alternative band from Bolton upon Dearne, and feature two sets of brothers: Kiaran and Brandon Crook, Andy and Josh Davidson.

Since we last saw The Sherlocks in Washington DC in 2017 they have continued to tour around the globe with stops all over Europe and Japan.

Their debut album, Live For The Moment continues to sell well, reached the Top 5 on the FMBQ charts and remains in the Top 10.

They also recently graced the cover of Pollstar Magazine with a photograph from their last appearance at DC9 Nightclub.

They're finishing their US tour, with a swing through Atlanta and the Shaky Knees Festival before heading to DC and finishing up this side of the pond with Philly, NY and a pair of shows in Canada. Their DC 9 Nightclub performance will be this region's only opportunity to see this band perform live before they spend the summer playing festivals throughout Europe.

This is your opportunity to see these incredibly talented musicians up-close and in-person and not amongst 50,000 other festival goers. Speaking of festivals, not only are these chaps quite personable and easily accessible, but they are also some pranksters. Read about their Photoshopping skills that had them nearly headlining the Y Not 2018 Festival this year!

‘Taz’ Niederauer Highlights A Magical Weekend at Sweetwater 420 Fest

Author Preface:  Before I dive into this recap, I think it’s important to give a preface, or a disclaimer if you will. If you’re reading this, it’s likely you’ve been to a festival like Sweetwater 420 Fest before. There are three stages and lots of choices to make, like which bands to see or skip; when to go grab a drink or take some time to see the city you’re visiting; which song to skip for a trip to the port-a-potty bank; when to try and get some sleep so you can be ready to go for the next day of music. What you’re about to read is just one fan’s take on the moments that stuck out from a festival that had something unique to offer to each of the thousands of people that attended.

For those who may see this review and think TLDR (Too Long, Didn't Read) we can sum the Sweetwater 420 Fest this way:

Sweetwater 420 Fest was excellent this year. The organizers put together a fantastic, diverse lineup that created some difficult choices and showcased some incredibly talented acts, both established and ascending. The setting in downtown Atlanta is a great setup for a festivalthis size, and the stages are very close to one another and easy to navigate. This has become a can’t-miss festival every year, and this year may have been the best yet because of the stellar collection of artists on the bill.

Having said that, let’s get into it…

Vulfpeck was clearly enjoying themselves at the festival.

Vulfpeck was clearly enjoying themselves at the festival.

Sweetwater Brewery’s annual music festival, Sweetwater 420 Fest brought an outstanding, stacked lineup to the Peach State for 4/20 weekend. The festival in downtown Atlanta’s Olympic Centennial Park, which boasts an attendance of 50,000 fans, has become known as one of the best jam band festivals year in and year out, and the 2018 iteration was no different, with a schedule that included established headliners and up and coming stars each of the three days. This year, Sweetwater 420 Fest also featured 14-year-old guitar prodigy Brandon “Taz” Niederauer as the festival’s “Artist at Large,” placing a huge spotlight on the weekend’s (literally) smallest artist.

Prior to the official first day of the festival, night one headliners the String Cheese Incident hosted an official pre-party, treating 1,000 lucky fans to an intimate performance at Variety Playhouse. Die-hard Cheese fans poured into the venue and the band kicked off the weekend with an outstanding, career-spanning show for their most devoted fans that made the trek from far and wide. Upon coming out for an encore of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naïve Melody),” this show set the tone for a weekend of positive vibes and fantastic music spanning a wide range of genres.

Perfect weather and fans enjoyed every minute of it!

Perfect weather and fans enjoyed every minute of it!

The festival kicked off with perfect weather – clear skies and low 70s temperatures – with Denver funk masters, The Motet, providing the opening set on the main stage, offering an opportunity for the newly arrived fans to loosen up their hips and get limber for a long weekend of dancing in the sunshine.

As the Memphis soul band Southern Avenue wrapped up an inspired set on the side stage, and the Record Company’s blues-inspired power rock carried from the main stage, an enormous crowd gathered for a 4:30pm set by the up-and-coming jam band Spafford. Attracting easily the largest crowd at the side stage all weekend, Spafford delivered an outstanding set for devoted fans and newcomers alike. Following a 4:20 4/20 toast, Spafford kicked off a set of exploratory jams and high-energy psychedelic rock, highlighted by a 20+ minute improvisation out of “Minds Unchained.” Following a tremendous peak in this jam, the band closed their set with a cover of Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How it Feels” before saying goodbye to nearly the full festival crowd until their late night set at midnight.

Paul Hoffman of Greensky Bluegrass

The 4/20 Festivities wrapped up on the main stage with an excellent set by country-rocker Sturgill Simpson that showcased his unique ability to incorporate modern country, blues, and rock and roll into a completely original sound and lively performance, followed by 2 sets of the String Cheese Incident. Cheese brought out Taz Niederauer for his first sit-in of the weekend on the second set opener “Close Your Eyes.” This was the first instance of many over the weekend where Taz was able to lend his considerable talents on the electric guitar to add another dimension to a band’s sound, adding fierce blues-rock to String Cheese Incident’s set before the band would go on to explore every facet of their style, including traditional bluegrass, electronica, and soul.

Spafford brought their late-night party to the same venue as the SCI pre-party, Variety Playhouse. After instantly selling out a smaller show at Terminal West, the band and festival moved to the considerably larger Playhouse, giving Spafford possibly their largest club/theater set in the band’s five-year history. This late night show was a rager, featuring incredible jams out of “Electric Taco Stand,” “Bee Jam,” and “All In.” The energy at this show was intense and relentless, blowing out the bassist Jordan Fairless’s amplifier halfway through the set and providing a great outlet for the crowd to keep dancing until 2am.

Joe Russo of Joe Russo's Almost Dead

Joe Russo of Joe Russo's Almost Dead

Saturday brought clear skies again as a slow-moving crowd trickled into the park throughout the afternoon. Following sets by Anders Osborne and Marco Benevento, and as Arlington-based reggae band SOJA played the main stage, Artist at Large, Taz Niederauer played an hour and a half set that put his talent on the guitar, as a bandleader, and a singer on display. But the party kicked off in earnest at 5:15pm with a rare daytime slot for the adrenaline-fueled Grateful Dead tribute band Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. In the first of their two sets, JRAD showed off their psychedelic, acid-jazz chops with ambient explorations of “Feel Like a Stranger” and “The Wheel.”

With a festival lineup as stacked as this one was, the placement of JRAD in this late-afternoon slot created an unfortunate conflict, as many fans – myself included – had to make the choice of two sets of the best dance party in the jam scene, or a side-stage set by Grammy-award winning jam-grass outfit the Infamous Stringdusters. JRAD rewarded the loyalty of those who stayed for their second set though, opening their final frame with a rousing rendition of “Shakedown Street” with frequent callbacks to “Feel Like a Stranger” from guitarist Tom Hamilton.

Derek and Susan Tedeschi

Closing out the night as headliners, the Tedeschi Trucks Band played a great set of soul and southern rock that was highlighted by a sit-in by Taz Niederauer on the Blind Willie McTell classic, popularized by the Allman Brothers Band, “Statesboro Blues.” As slide-master Derek Trucks, who began touring at age 13 himself, and Niederauer traded shredding guitar solos and Susan Tedeshi belted out the soulful vocals, one could feel a certain gravity in the festival-grounds. It’s moments like these that make people travel for live music; to see a torch being passed down from one generation to the next while honoring the inspiration from musicians long gone. In this sit-in perhaps more than any other, Taz truly held his own while playing next to, arguably, the greatest guitarist alive.

Derek and Susan Tedeschi

Greensky Bluegrass performs an inspired set.

On the final day of the festival, the perfect weather unfortunately ran out, and only a small, wet crowd remained for a great final slate of bands. Following Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds on the main stage, Greensky Bluegrass played an inspired set featuring another Taz sit-in on an Allman Brothers tune, “Midnight Rider.” Just a few minutes later on the side-stage, the instrumental rock quartet TAUK ignited their crowd’s energy with an intense and powerful cover of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer.” These two bands, Greensky and TAUK, while completely divergent musically, presented two similarly energetic and engaging sets to dance to as the rain continued, unrelenting.

Greensky Bluegrass performs an inspired set.

Sunday’s undoubted highlight was the 5:00pm set by Vulfpeck, the Michigan-based funk outfit that has risen to fame in meteoric fashion. With a collection of guests, including guitarist Cory Wong and vocalist Joey Dosik, Vulfpeck put on what may have been the best performance of the weekend, never letting their foot off the gas and having an unbelievable amount of fun on stage, getting the crowd moving endlessly with their catchy hooks and up-tempo bass leads by Joe Dart.

Umphrey’s McGee was set to close out the festival with 2 sets, but due to a wind warning had to adjust so the festival could end early, meaning instead the band played one extra long set that reached nearly two and a half hours. Umphrey’s set featured tunes spanning their twenty year career, with old-favorite “Ringo” providing the last jam vehicle of the night and serving as the final climax of a set that featured 4 improvisations of 15+ minutes, following “Draconian,” “Mantis,” and “Remind Me.” Their set also included the final Taz Niederauer sit-in of the weekend before their encore choice poked fun at the thin crowd of fans that stuck around with Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain.”

Despite the wet conditions fans continued to enjoy themselves

A day of rain couldn’t stop the fun of a truly special weekend of music in the Peach State. Sweetwater 420 Fest has become on of the best lineups year-in and year-out, and the festival delivered this year with perhaps their most stacked lineup yet. I’ll leave you with five important words to takeaway from my experience: don’t miss it next year!

Despite the wet conditions fans continued to enjoy themselves

Leftover Salmon – Something Higher

Leftover Salmon is scheduled to release their highly anticipated album Something Higher after nearly two years since their 2016 album, 25. Longtime fans of the band will not be disappointed by the new 12-track album, which boasts sounds and genres that have not been previously heard on past Leftover Salmon albums. Something Higher is due for release Friday, May 4.

Photo Credit: John-Ryan Lockman / ShowLove Media

The Boulder-based band is currently comprised of Vince Herman (vocals, guitar, washboard), Drew Emmitt (vocals, mandolin, fiddle, electric guitar), Greg Garrison (bass, vocals), Andy Thorn (banjo electric banjo, vocals), Alwyn Robinson (drums, vocals), and Erik Deutsch (keyboard). Although Leftover Salmon are classically classified as a jam band favoring the bluegrass, Cajun, and swing genres (among others), Something Higher represents an evolution of their sound, with tracks that continue to feel fresh and modern. Elements of bluegrass, rock, R&B, and even electronic influences are married into one exciting masterpiece of an album, that feels different, yet still cohesive.

Pioneers in the jam band scene, Leftover Salmon play with an immense range of sound that is baffling for a five-piece band. While each recorded track is played with a skilled ferocity and passion, I’d imagine that witnessing a live performance would be an even more energizing treat, with fast-paced beats and intricate melodies commanding attention.

Particularly noteworthy songs include “Southern Belle” and “Evermore.” Two of my favorites on the album, both are full of longing and symphonies of expectedly contrasting instruments. The former adopts a soulful tone with folksy harmonies that highlight a comforting twang in Herman’s vocals, which pair perfectly with ribbons of keyboard that decorate the sweet lyrics.

“Evermore” is a song that is wistful and full of longing for adventure, while still acknowledging the one place they can actually call home. The contrast between the mid-paced drums and the fiddle set the tone for a rollercoaster of a song that transports you to a forest studded in the evergreen trees that the song title mildly alludes to. It is both urgent and calming, reinforcing the idea that this song and consequently album is a complicated mixture of sounds, emotions, and meanings. Over half the song is instrumental, with the instruments dancing around and with each other, twisting together to create a heartfelt and well-crafted mix of skilled precision.

“Analog” and “House of Cards” are two tracks you wouldn’t typically expect to hear on the same album, with the former dripping with electronic sounds, and the latter employing almost Rastafarian elements that somehow echo The Eagle’s “Hotel California.” The political undertones and the somewhat foreboding beat add an extra layer of meaning to the track, as well as the album as a whole, reinforcing that this album is current and pressing.

While the first half of the album displays immense diversity and range, the second half plays like fan-favorite bluegrass. The incorporation of both experimental and classic sounds will leave fans and newcomers alike pleased and eager for more. The album goes through a whirlwind of emotions, beginning on an uplifting note with country sounding “Places,” and ending with the heavier and nostalgic “Burdened Heart.” The latter closes out the album with an intro that is reminiscent of both George Harrison’s “Rising Sun,” and the 2007 film Across the Universe’s take on The Beatles. It is the perfect close to a satisfying album.

Something Higher is both surprising and exciting, with each song bursting with creativity and originality. Leftover Salmon’s music is relatable and accessible for music lovers of all sorts, and becomes even more inviting and enjoyable over numerous listens. There’s something for everyone on this album, and despite some wild leaps, passionate fans will also be satisfied with this latest release.

The Judy Chops Celebrated Love and New Music at Pearl Street Warehouse [Audio]

The Judy Chops new single “Lay My Love” performed at Pearl Street Warehouse on 4/27/2018

photo credit: Jeremy Shanahan, Good Foot Media

"It's been a crazy couple of years, man. And the chops have been thinking, like, what's the thing that keeps us all together, man? It's love, babies. It's love. And we love each and every one of you."

The Judy Chops came to Pearl Street Warehouse on Friday, April 27, to celebrate tens years together as a band and  the release of their latest album, Love is the Answer. This show came less than a week after they won the ROCKN' to LOCKN' contest, where they played a set of entirely new music from that album and picked up a coveted spot playing at Lockn' Festival this summer.

The Judy Chops features William Howard (Electric Guitar, Vocals), Molly Murphy (Hollowbody Guitar, Vocals), Sally Murphy (Banjo), Mike Pressel (Trumpet), Rachel Smith (Baritone Saxophone), Jims Hinkle (Bass), and Jess Bergh (Drums). This crew seamlessly blends a wide variety of genres, from swing, to country, to jazz, to rock, and so much more. All with a collective swagger and breadth of talent that will get you out of your seat.

The Judy Chops wrote their first song, “I Will Never Leave” after meeting while working the Natural Chimneys Campground in Mt Solon, VA

Before playing their new album in full, The Judy Chops took the audience on a tour through their history and catalog, playing everything from the first song they wrote as a band after forming at Natural Chimney's Campground, to a track so new that it did not make this latest album and has yet to be released. This summer they will be playing Red Wing Roots Music Festival at that same campground they worked together some ten years ago.

All of this made for an exciting atmosphere as The Judy Chops began to dig into their new music for a crowded room at Pearl Street Warehouse. "Thank you for supporting live music, and for supporting our dreams, guys. Our dream is to put our music into the world and you're making it possible." They worked their way through the album in order before bringing in some covers to close the night out, with a fitting "Love Shack" encore capping off 25 songs and over two hours of music.

The Judy Chops will be in Charlottsville this Friday for another celebration of their new album  before heading to Sleepy Creek Spring Dig on Saturday. You can find their new album, Love is the Answer, on BandCamp, Spotify, and iTunes,. Their single, "Lay My Love" made it on the March Relix Sampler. And be on the lookout for our full album review by Abbie Ginis next week. For now, you can relive this rocking album release party with full set audio below.

2018 National Cannabis Festival Brings Good Music, Good Vibes to DC

Guest Contributor:  Ben Wallen

The third annual National Cannabis Festival rocked the RFK stadium grounds last on Saturday, April 21 with a sold-out crowd that brought thousands together from DC to California to celebrate and support the legalization of medical and recreational marijuana across the United States. The bright and warm weather from the year’s festival was a stark contrast to last year, which was a on overcast and rainy, yet enjoyable afternoon. This year’s weather brought the largest crowd and attendance the National Cannabis Festival has ever seen, even selling out of tickets at one point during the day. And with that came the inevitable frustratingly long lines to enter the stadium, which was heard to have extended the RFK stadium itself!

For a $50 ticket, festival goers not only enjoyed an afternoon of marijuana consumption without scrutiny, they also had access to around 100 vendors offering products and services from t-shirts, to buying and learning how to set up an manage cultivation equipment, to wellness services and clinics, to glass blowing demonstrations, to smoking accessories. One could also find their way to learning about marijuana policy and how they can affect change in their community at the policy tent, or learn about green yoga from Vida Fitness. Or, one could get lost in the seemingly endless supply of food trucks that I’ve ever seen, including BACON STEAK. And of course, there was a killer music line-up featuring DC favorites: Beau Young Prince, DJ Ayes Cold, Oh He Dead, Names, MARLEE, See-I and headliners  Backyard Band and rap royalty, Cypress Hill!

We look forward to next year’s festival which will take place of Saturday, April 20 2019!

The 9:30 Club
Venue Reviews

Venue Review: 9:30 Club – Washington, D.C.

The 9:30 Club opened May 31, 1980, on 930 F Street NW.  Despite the venue being officially named "Nightclub 9:30" it is universally known by fans and artists alike as the 9:30 Club.

A lot has changed since then including its location the surrounding the neighborhood, and the city in general. The one thing that does remain constant in Washington DC is the legendary status and clout that the 9:30 Club deservedly earned.

9:30 Club

815 V Street Northwest

Washington, DC 20001

Capacity: 1200

On January 5, 1996, the modern day 9:30 Club opened its doors on 815 V Street in the former WUST Radio Music hall.

A whos-who of artists have graced this venue in its storied 30+ year history including tour kickoff's, album releases, surprise appearances, legendary live album recording and videos, and just about everything in between. This venue is hands down the most storied, celebrated, and frequented venue in the region.

The venue is so beloved that many upcoming acts are told by friends and locals alike "You know you have made in DC [musically] it when you make it to the 9:30 Club." DC Music Review has witnessed artists family members telling this to a musician or two. Other musicians have told DC Music Review "I have been waiting my whole life to have a 9:30 Club cupcake!" The infamous cupcakes are delivered each morning fresh to the venue and are sold to customers but left in each green room as part of the venue welcome to an artist.

The 9:30 Club has been named "Nightclub of the Year" by National Publication Pollstar 11 times and has frequently been the top-selling club in the US, and in 1993 was named Rolling Stones #1 Big Room In America (source). .

In what was once the coat check area on the main level now stands the "9:30 Hall of Records" which tries to catalog in album form every headlining act that passed through its hallowed halls.

If you love music and you live in or travel through Washington DC, you will no doubt spend unforgettable nights of music at the 9:30 Club.

Hayley Jane and the Primates Kick Off May Swing of Tour at the 8×10 this Thursday

May brings  Hayley Jane and the Primates back on tour, and that  leg of the tour kicks off this week at The 8x10 in Baltimore on Thursday, May 3rd. Hosted by All Good Presents, this show marks the band's first time headlining this venue. The last time we saw them there was almost exactly a year ago, supporting Pink Talking Fish.

This is a band we here at DC Music Review absolutely love to cover. They always bring a captivating stage presence, combined with beautiful, playful, and original song-writing. When last we saw them, they brought a fiery performance to Pearl Street Warehouse back in December. In  the Goodman’s Good Music – Concert Picks of the Week – April 30th, Nina Goodman said, "she and her band deliver so hard, you won't want to blink."

And this is an exciting time to watch this band. Reviews from Relix, Live for Live Music,  and so many others, continually heap praise on their performances and sheer talent.  Hayley Jane also  just finished a tour with Ryan Montbleau after the release of their first album as Yes Darling and is slated to join Matt Buttler's Everyone Orchestra for two nights in Buffalo.

Tickets are on sale for $10. Come find out why Hayley Jane and the Primates are winning over audiences everywhere they go.
