Album Review: The Hold Steady – Thrashing Thru the Passion

In the opening song (“Denver Haircut”) of The Hold Steady’s newest offering, Thrashing Thru the Passion, front man Craig Finn states in his trademark speak-sing delivery, “It doesn’t have to be pure, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just sort of has to be worth it.”  And in a way, this refrain captures the essence of the album on which it appears.

The songs presented here certainly check many of the boxes that listeners have come to expect from the band.  There are no shortages of the regular Finn-isms that colorfully detail the sense of despair and ennui that come from lives spent on a seedier, booze-soaked and drug-addled path, and the barroom rock-and-roll riffs are still present.  Even keyboardist Franz Nicolay, whose last appearance was on 2008’s Separation Sunday, has returned to the fray, and his presence is not easily missed.

However, there is a sense that the sounds offered here have been scaled back in some ways, or even watered down, compared to previous efforts.  The riffs aren’t quite as big, loud, and distorted as they once were (one major exception to this is when the band locks into a heavy groove in “Epaulets”), and the songs generally do not feel as immediate as previous efforts, which wasted no time in grabbing the listener and propelling them into the band’s intricately constructed narratives.

With that said, the album does reward multiple listens, allowing the nuances of the band’s three-guitar attack to reveal themselves -- guitarist Steve Selvedge, who joined the band to fill out the sound for their 2014 release, Teeth Dreams, is back, and his contributions weave quite well with the playing of fellow guitarists Finn and Tad Kubler.  Nicolay’s keys take center stage in songs like “Blackout Sam” (switching between the sounds of a traditional piano and Hammond organ) and the arpeggiated keys on “Star 18.”  Throughout all of this, drummer Bobby Drake and bassist Galen Polivka provide a solid rhythm section that tie the songs together.

The primary aspect that remains strong on this album, and arguably continues to be the defining characteristic that makes The Hold Steady stand out from other bands, is Finn’s ability as a lyricist.  Lyrics that describe things like a “tequila take off and Tecate landing” (“Entitlement Crew”), or a character suspected by a doctor of passing off a fake injury for more painkillers (“Traditional Village”) will have old fans feeling right at home and showing new fans what the band is about (although it must be said the refrain in “You Did Good Kid” wears out its welcome quickly, despite the otherwise strong showing of the rest of the song’s lyrics). And as is typical of the band, there are many references to other musicians and bands in the lyrics, including Metallica and Boston in “Denver Haircut” and Anthrax and Peter Tosh in “Star 18.”

Ultimately, Thrashing Thru the Passion does not quite reach the heights of The Hold Steady’s albums released throughout the aughts.  In some ways, the songs offered here could reflect a certain weariness brought on by those years -- the album does not present anything new from the band, and fans may be left with the impression that most of these songs are slightly less effective rehashes.  However, for those mainly looking for Finn’s ability to weave a narrative, and especially for those who have felt deprived since Nicolay left the band, this will scratch the itch. Even though Thrashing Thru the Passion is not perfect, it is definitely worth it.

Review: Frass Green Releases ‘For You’

Although Frass Green has only been on my radar for a couple of months, they feel like a band I’ve had on rotation for years. Maybe it’s the nostalgic Beach Boys surfer vibe, or maybe that I’m a sucker for chill (yet intricate) indie tunes, but tracks from Frass Green’s new album are already living on a slew of my own personal playlists.

Frass Green originated as the solo project of Joe Antoshak (rhythm, guitar, vocals), but is now a full fledged band comprised of Tyler Rippel (bass, keys, vocals), Antonio Peluso (drums), and Matt Lachance (guitar, violin, vocals).

For You, the first release from Frass Green as we know them now, is chock full of the indie equivalent of ‘bangers’. Song after song is objectively memorable, each track building off the one prior, adding new layers of nuance and emotion that sets it apart from the rest. The new album feels crisp, with seamless harmonies and soaring vocals that give Frass Green an effortlessly natural sound.

From the dialed back “Like You Do” and “Heaven“ to the peppier and danceable “Hair” and “Sycamore”, For You truly has something for everyone. Hints of folk and surfer rock pepper individual tracks, and despite the wide range of sounds, the album flows together impeccably. The variety in sound is fitting, as the lyrics flip flop between hopeful romance ("For You!") and heartbroken angst ("Llewyn"), accurately depicting the rollercoaster of emotions that accompanies love.

The album closes on an optimistic note with "Met You!" (my personal favorite), which feels like it belongs in the opening credits of a movie starring Greta Gerwig. One where her sunny disposition and positivity are nearly crushed by the overbearing soullessness of a city, but her relationships and self-discovery allow her to come out the other end stronger. Or something like that, you get the idea.

Although this album was released at the top of summer, it feels like the perfect soundtrack to ring in a new season. For You is soaked in romance and nostalgia, and it’s hard to listen to the album without reflecting fondly on the past few months.

Be sure to catch Frass Green next Thursday at DC9!

The Duskwhales Celebrate New EP and 10 Years Together at Jammin’ Java

The Duskwhales had everyone in Jammin' Java hanging on every note and lyric on Saturday night. They had the full attention of the crowd, so in tune with them that some fans even sported silver glitter under their eyes, matching that of lead singer and guitarist Seth Flynn. They started off the night singing "Devil's Daughter," a fast paced song from their 2017 album, going on to play  a combination of songs from their newly released EP "Take It Back" as well as old favorites.

They  thoughtfully assembled a mix of older songs for their fans, like "Lavender Ladies," as well as new ones like "Today." They brought not only the Beatles-esque sound they are known for, but also incorporated a bit of a slower vibe with their song "Karina," a song which keyboardist Brian Majewski explained he wrote about his brother’s then girlfriend, now wife, as a sort of encouragement for their relationship.

The band’s own energy matched if not topped that of their fans as they celebrated being together as a group for 10 years, an even bigger accomplishment when you take into account that they are all in their early 20s. The trio (rounded out by drummer Chris Baker) began playing together in early high school and have continued to do so ever since. They still have a large following from their high school, many of which were present at Jammin' Java.

The new-to-the-scene duo Griefcat  (Louisa Hall and Nardo Lilly) kicked off the evening with great energy, followed up by the band Nah. who set the stage for The Duskwhales. The captivating almost eery voice of Emma Bleker, the vocalist for Nah., combined with their rock sound from bassist Brendan Ra Tyler, guitarist Chris Smith, drummer Stephen Rodriguez, and Zach Be on keys, immediately grasped the attention of those in the room, priming them for The Duskwhales.

The high energy of this trio continued to the very last song, an encore requested by the crowd, the 10 years that this band has been together shows as they are completely in tune with one another. The Duskwhales are a band that you need to see to understand just how unique their sound is, and I highly recommend you do exactly that.

Richmond Is DOOMED!

Flamingos generally are not migratory birds (unlike the European swallow), but luckily for Richmond, Virginia, Doom Flamingo does travel. The sextet, formed in 2018, is a Charleston, South Carolina supergroup that is taking the jam scene by storm. Their music isn’t the standard festival fodder, though. Their sound of synthwave comes straight from the 80’s and would comfortably reside on a soundtrack like Top Gun’s. Comprised of members from various bands in the Charleston area such as RoboTrio, and with Ryan Stasik of Umphrey’s McGee, there’s no shortage of talent spread across the stage.

Doom Flamingo’s show at the Broadberry was the official after party for the Umphrey’s McGee show earlier in the night. With fans already amped up from two Umph sets, the band was set to hit the ground running. The synthwave masters took flight with “Replicant” and from there hit two of their currently released singles “Telepathy” and “Runaway.” Next, the band took Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” and morphed that into a dance number to keep the party vibe going. The crowd was treated to the new song, composed by guitarist Thomas Kenney, “Stay,” played for only the second time, which will be on their forthcoming debut album. Subsequently, lead singer, Kanika Moore, left the stage briefly and Mike Quinn took the reins leading an instrumental on saxophone and showed the crowd his prowess by tearing up the room with an improv solos.

The instrumental “Domingo’s Drive” written by keyboardist Ross Bogan, member of the ever-morphing RoboTrio, followed. Originally named “Growler,” this tune lets Bogan, Kenney, and Quinn tear into solos on their respective instruments. As if it wasn’t hot enough already, Doom cranked the heat in the room with an absolutely scorching cover of NIN “Closer.” Kanika held the crowd in the palm of her hand as the crowd sang every word with her. Another cover followed in the form of “Love On Hold” by the Belgian, Aeroplane, with some heavy Flamingo flair applied to it. The original “Night Marchers” based on an ancient Hawaiian legend with lyrics penned by Kanika was next on the list. This will be a big part of the narrative in the forthcoming Doom Flamingo comic book that is currently in the works. The band closed the set with “Blade,” a Doom original that was inspired by Texas Chainsaw Massacre and written from the perspective of a captive of Leatherface. Doom payed tribute to one of their favorite synthwave bands, Carpenter Brut, by covering the song “Sunday Lunch” for the encore.

It was an incredible performance by Doom Flamingo. Even the band themselves were psyched about how well they were synched. Due to all members having multiple other music projects, their appearances aren’t frequent, but you can find them at select Umphrey’s McGee official after parties and festivals such as Resonance, the Marcus King Family Reunion, and Charleston Pour House’s first music festival, Into The Woods. Cris Jacobs and Friends Celebrate the Music of Jerry Garcia at Gypsy Sally’s

Anyone who has gotten to see Cris Jacobs play live or knows about him and his musical influence, knows that Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead are major influences.  Some of us local residents were lucky enough to catch him opening up for Greensky Bluegrass at the beginning of August at MECU Pavillion in Baltimore and saw magic made.  The encore brought all nine members of both Greensky and the Cris Jacobs Band onstage to destroy a twenty-seven minute encore that was nothing but Dead with "Wharf Rat-->Scarlet Begonias-->Fire on the Mountain".

Starting off almost right where he finished in Maryland, Jacobs, joined this time by Mookie Seigel, David Markowitz  and Ed Hough, (also joined by Jonathan Sloane for second set and encore), the night kicked off the with an amazing version of "Scarlet Begonias" that got some of our hopes high for a lead in to another "Fire on the Mountain" chain, but were still equally as ecstatic to hear just on its own.

Cris and "friends" had welcomed the crowd  to the celebration at the beginning of the night and celebrating is exactly what they did honoring the man himself by making sure his fans had a great time singing and dancing the night away.  Jacobs even added in some island time for the crowd with a version of Jimmy Cliffs "The Harder They Come" before closing out the first set with "China Cat Sunflower--->I Know You Rider".

Jacobs is a force on the guitar that is hypnotizing to watch for sure, and Friday night at Gypsy Sally's was spent in full trance mode as he dazzled the venue with "Mississippi Half Step Uptown" "Shakedown Street" "Black Peter" and a number of other hits that had the crowd celebrating the days between in style.

Two sets of celebrating Jerry wasn't all Gypsy Sally's was treated to as the three song encore that kicked off with "He's Gone" and also included "Eyes of the World" and "Deal".
