The California Honeydrops Give DC More Than A Lil Bit Of Lovin’

Hump day had a homecoming of sorts this week with a booty shaking show at Lincoln Theater staring The California Honeydrops on November 9, 2022.  Born abroad but spending his teenage years in the Nation's Capital, lead singer and incredibly talented musician, Lech Wierzynski is more than familiar with the DC music scene.  He shared tales of his time here and let everyone know how good it felt to be back, noting the city has changed from his days walking the streets and playing after-hours jam sessions around town.

AJ Lee and The Blue Summit kicked the night off and were able to get the crowd up and dancing with a lively version of "Cumberland Blues", noting that they were very happy to see people get up on their feet.  The DMV has been fortunate enough to see this California-based band perform locally three times this year already - Charm City Bluegrass, Ramble Festival, and now at The Lincoln Theatre.  It was great to hear this band jam once again on the last stop of their tour with The Drops.

The Honeydrops are a band that is hard to put in any type of musical genre box as they touch so many - but they are undeniably one that will make you get up and dance.  The band's energy that they bring to the stage is why they continue to grow their fanbase with no end in sight.  Asking the audience to raise their hand if they had seen the band before and then asking who was there seeing them for the first time, it seemed like there were more of the latter. Thanking the 'first-timers and the ones that dragged them out, Weirzynski and the band thought it fitting to share some of their new music as a reward.

Making attendees feel like old friends is one way to ensure they will continue to come back for more, and making sure they have a really good time is another, and the Honeydrops did both extremely well!  Sharing new music off the latest album, Soft Spot, we were also blessed with some stories behind the music, one in particular that touched a real soft spot with audience and band alike.   Wierzynski described the new album as follows:  “This record is all about love and good lovin’ and other things that matter,” and safe to say that is clear with the songs that are included on it.

"Honey and Butter" is a song dedicated to Wierzynski's grandmother in honor of her 100th birthday.  Telling the tale of how he used to pretend to be sick when he was younger and how his grandmother would make him honey and butter on toasted bread, and that made everything seem better.  Another tale we were told was about the song "Pocket Chicken", which can be interpreted literally, and while vastly different from the tale about family, this one was equally as entertaining.

A set list that went around the world, from slow serenades to brass bumping funk, kept the crowd up, energized, and wanting more.  The band's music is unique in the musical landscape and draws roots, Bay Area R&B, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second.  This is a band that can pivot from a slow serenade, to  an upbeat "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You" by Wilson Pickett, to an all out brass laden soulful "In Your Arms" in the span of a few minutes.  Not only can The Drops sustain an infectious and overpowering euphoria going they performed two full sets of their music at The Lincoln Theatre.  Based on the depth and breadth of their repertoire, we thought that the band would keep going well into the night and end with Wilson Pickett's "In The Midnight Hour."  Despite the show ending past 11 PM, everyone walking out of this venue in downtown Washington, DC, certainly had that soulful funk and swagger as they exited the theatre and back onto U Street.

The historic theater was a marvelous backdrop for the band that started out with just Wierzynski and drummer Ben Malament busking in Oakland, California, and another great venue the band gets to add to their repertoire.  Earlier this year, headlining Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, Colorado, was also checked off the bucket list, and it seems obvious, after seeing them play live again and again, that the trajectory for these amazing musicians will continue growing by leaps and bounds and we are definitely here for it.

The California Honeydrops were the most charismatic and energetic band to perform in The Lincoln Theatre in recent memory.  Fans spent most of the evening dancing in theatre and poured out into the aisles to joyfully dance to the music of The Drops.  It has been quite some time since The Lincoln Theatre hosted a band of this rare euphoria and swagger.  To the best of our memory, the last time The Lincoln Theatre roared with this much energy was perhaps when Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings famously performed.

We look forward to the next time The California Honeydrops come to the DMV and perform. True to their word, The Drops don't just perform, they throw parties.  Based upon the parties that this band has thrown in the DMV and around the country, we look forward to the next throw down they decide to have us along for the ride!

Neighbor performs at The Hamilton on November 4, 2022

Welcome To The Neighborhood: The Hamilton Welcomes Neighbor

Kicking off the past weekend, The Hamilton welcomed the Boston-based, jamtastic foursome, Neighbor for the first time ever Friday night.  Attendees trickled in slowly to start off the show and fans were greeted with thanks from keyboard player and founding member Richard James.  Long time fans even made sure to make the newcomers were coming to see the band for the first time feel welcome by gifting them sequined slap bracelets as a neighborly gesture.   Others in the crowd have had a good time courtesy of the band over the past few months and those who were lucky enough to attend the inaugural Ramble Festival got to see Neighbor throw down at two different sets – one being an unforgettable late night get down.

Neighbor performs at The Hamilton

For those who aren’t familiar, the band was formed back in 2019 by actual neighbors Ricky James and guitarist Lyle Brewer who played music together when they were younger.  After being a member of the notoriously fun, collective tribute band Pink Talking Phish, James thought about wanting to try something different and got back into playing music with not only Brewer but also Dan Kelly on bass and Dean Johnston on drums.

Neighbor performs at The Hamilton

Friday night the foursome eased into things but held nothing back as far as their musical capabilities and ensured the crowd they were in for one wild ride as far as musical variety.  What this band consistently delivers is a ride all around the musical map playing funky jams that are soulful and deep.  Back when first formed, the band held a weekly residency spot at a Massachusetts venue where the ‘Neighbors” (what the fans and followers of the band are often referred to as) were truly solidified.  That is where people fell in love with the band and a definite following was born as the Neighbors formed a Neighborhood.

Richard James of Neighbor performs at The Hamilton

Richard James

With musical influence and talent that stretches quite wide, song after song, ears rang with familiar sounds and riffs.  Keyboard player James hit notes and echoed sounds of everyone from Johnny Cash to John Denver.  The Phish influence was more than clear multiple times throughout the night when ticket holders could hear sounds that made you think you almost think you were somewhere else for a moment.  Add in the solos that we were able to watch Brewer and Kelly suck people in on were another piece of the Neighbor pie that everyone wanted more of.

Two incredibly strong sets were rounded out with fun banter and comments that were shared between everyone that filled the basement of the adored DC venue that night.  The collective talent and solos that the foursome shared were not only impressive but also amazingly fun and all of those reasons are why we are sure to see Neighbor continue to grow and gain following, inevitably climbing up festival lineup posters and adding venues and cities far and wide over the months and years to come.  A true party vibe band where seeing them means making new friends, being blown away by talent and having a real good time – what more could you ask for?

Lyle Brewer and Dan Kelly in full flight

Even though it was there first time in DC they shared with everyone that it definitely didn’t feel like it and how so many of their friends and family were able to be with them that night so it was like being home.  Graciously thanking everyone from attendees to the venue and ‘especially the chef’ at Hamilton, the band promised they’d be back soon and we can’t wait to have them back in the neighborhood.

Added bonus for the vinyl enthusiasts and Neighbor fans, we learned the night of the show that their vinyl has been pressed and will be available for purchase in the near future - start thinking about holiday gifts for your music loving friends now!

Tedeschi Trucks Band performs at The Warner Theatre in 2022
Concert News

Tedeschi Trucks Band Announces Their 2023 Warner Theatre Residency

Tedeschi Trucks Band just announced their 2023 Warner Theatre run, and we could not be more excited to hear this news.

Tedeschi Trucks is no stranger to the Warner Theatre and has been regularly performing here each winter since 2011.  In 2011 they performed a single show. Since then, this band has become a juggernaut and one of America's premier rock-and-roll big bands. With that unsurpassed power and momentum, their Warner Theatre performances have evolved into an eagerly awaited two-weekend six-night residency which almost always sells out.

What makes this year's Warner Theatre residency different is the addition of the band's newest project - I Am The Moon. This project is an epic, 4-album project with accompanying videos released this summer.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - I Am The Moon

I Am The Moon evolved as an extension of the band's now legendary performance at the 2019 LOCKN' Festival, where they performed  Derek and the Dominos album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs in its entirety with Trey Anastasio.  I Am The Moon began as a pandemic-related writing exercise suggested by TTB vocalist Mike Mattison in May 2020  and transformed into a career-defining artistic statement as TTB reimagined the mythic Persian tale of star-crossed lovers, Layla and Majnun, through a modern-day lens: capturing the power of devotion in a time of crisis and separation.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - I Am The Moon

The endeavor evolved into Tedeschi Trucks Band's fifth studio release that finds them "at their finest and most adventurous" (NPR) with 24 original songs.  The four albums and four album-length companion films - I. Crescent, II. Ascension, III. The Fall, IV. Farewell - were released over four consecutive months this summer, beginning June 3rd. It is an astonishing amalgamation of soul, rock, blues, funk, roots, and Eastern influences, sweeping artistic ambition, and an exceptional quality of collective songwriting and musicianship that make I Am The Moon one of the year's most essential recordings.

How will I Am The Moon's songs make their way and be intertwined into the band's Warner Theatre Residency? During the band's summer Wheels of Soul performance at Wolf Trap, I Am The Moon's songs were only half released, and the released ones were just making their way into the band's live performances.

We will all have to purchase tickets to their Warner Theatre performances in order to see how these 24 new songs will dovetail and weave their way into a residency.

Their residency starts on - Thursday, February 16th, and culminates on Saturday, March 4th. We look forward to sharing a seat by the roaring music that awaits us on some cold Winter days in February and March 2023.

The ticket sale schedule can be found below. If you look at the schedule, you may even spot the band's pre-sale code (wink wink).

As we wait for the band's Warner Theatre Residency to begin, you can find all the albums and videos associated with this colossal musical achievement by this truly one-of-a-kind and treasured band.

I Am The Moon is an epic four-part album series.  This is an incredible undertaking and Tedeschi Trucks Band's most ambitious yet.  The band released four albums with four accompanying films - distinct and, at the same time, deeply connected.   In total, the band delivers 24 new songs inspired by classical literature - the themes and story of Layla and Majnun - reimagined through a modern lens and delivered with the power that only this twelve-piece wall of sound band can deliver.

Spafford Set To Perform At The 9:30 Club On January 21st, 2023

Spafford is set to return to the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, on January 21st, 2023.

Spafford is known for their astonishing improvisational ability and off-the-cuff extended jams. Spafford paints a picture in real-time each night with a musical palette known only to each other. It's a private language comprised of both their talent as musicians as well as their formidable catalog of influences, spanning 90's alt-rock radio hits to Steely Dan and The Crystal Method. Each Spafford show is a sonic pilgrimage, and Washington, DC has played host to several of these sonic pilgrimages, including Union Stage and 9:30 Club appearances.

Spafford Offers Weeknight Funk in 9:30 Club Return
Returning to 9:30 Club for their second performance at DC's storied nightclub, Spafford threw a party last Wednesday night, treating[...]

The last time they performed in the hallowed halls of the 9:30 Club was February 5th, 2020. Of course, a lot has happened in the world in the three years since they last came to Washington, DC, but they used that time to be as creative as possible. Spafford is among the most innovative and hard-traveling bands on the contemporary jam scene, and they performed one of the very first pandemic Drive-In concerts (Live At The Drive-In, held on June 25th, 2020) and released a live album - Live, Vol. 3.

On November 2nd, Spafford released their latest album, Simple Mysteries.

"We are beyond excited to share our latest album, Simple Mysteries, with the world. The album was recorded in phases throughout the course of the pandemic in our studio, "The Pound", where we selected some new ideas to bring to life and also gave some long-deserved studio treatment to songs we had already been playing live for some time. The result is a beautiful musical journey, hand-crafted to perfection, ripe for the listening.

Simple Mysteries was collaboratively produced by Spafford and engineered by Jordan Fairless at The Pound. The finished product was sent to 5-time Emmy Award Winning Mixer Matt Rifino for mixing and 13-time Grammy Award winner Dave McNair for mastering.

Enjoy our latest release wherever you listen to music, and thank you for supporting Spafford."

Spafford  //  November 2, 2022 on Simple Mysteries

If you have seen Spafford perform live, then you are as happy as we are to welcome them back to the 9:30 Club. If you have yet to take a soak in a dirt bath jam, then this is an experience to behold!

Fans, new and old alike, can look forward to Spafford and their jam-tastic performances in 2023. If you live a little further south of the DC Metro Area and cannot make their performance on January 21st, be sure to see Spafford perform at The Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, VA, two days prior, on January 19th, 2023.

Beth Orton

Beth Orton Is Coming To Sixth & I On November 1st

Beth Orton kicks off her North American tour on November 1, 2022, at Sixth & I in Washington, DC.

Orton rose to prominence during the 1990s through collaborations with William Orbit, Red Snapper, and The Chemical Brothers before striking out on her own with a series of acclaimed, award-winning solo releases.

Orton has long been regarded as possessing one of the most unique and expressive voices in music – a voice that has grown evermore rich and wise over time. Orton is well known for her "folktronica" sound, which mixes elements of folk and electronica. Her 1996 debut, Trailer Park, pioneered a synthesis of electronic and acoustic sounds, while its 1999 follow-up, Central Reservation, garnered international success. Further albums like the Jim O'Rourke-produced Comfort of Strangers and 2016's largely electronic Kidsticks deepened the breadth of her craft.

Many musicians turn inward when the world around them seems chaotic and unreliable. For Beth Orton, music re-emerged in the past several years as a tethering force even when her life felt more tumultuous than ever. Orton reframed her perception of herself, which revealed new personal truths that were both uncomfortable and profound. The foundations of the songs on Orton's stunning new album, Weather Alive (released on September 23, 2022), are nothing more than her voice and a "cheap, crappy" upright piano installed in a shed in her garden, conjuring a deeply meditative atmosphere that remains long after the final note has evaporated.

Speaking about Weather Alive, Orton remarked, "I wanted to be one of those women who are all sorted and put together someday, but at 40, I kept getting messier and more ill, and things just kept going wrong," Orton says. "This record explores all of that. I'm talking about my experiences possibly in a more personal way than I ever have, but the important part will be how this music makes other people feel. It's not a finished masterpiece, it is a collaboration with time, of someone struggling to make sense. And in that struggle, something beautiful got made." For all that struggle and introspection, The New York Times recently said that this album is "By far her best…an album of meditative grace and constant questioning, of elaborate constructions and startling intimacy."

As Orton remarked about her career and her collaborations, she said, "I am known as a collaborator, and I'm very good at it. I'm very open to it. Sometimes, I've been obscured by it." Make no mistake, Beth Orton is no longer obscured by her past collaborations; they are merely a part of her illustrious career. With a stunning new album in tow she headlines a North American Tour and the audience at Sixth & I will be the first to listen to Weather Alive performed on stage.

Umphrey’s McGee umXXV Tour Takes Them To The 9:30 Club For A Two-Night Residency In January 2023

It is hard to believe that 25 years ago, a group of six magical musicians formed Umphrey's McGee in South Bend, Indiana.  The DMV has seen our fair share of Umphrey's McGee and seemingly cannot get enough of this band and the band loves us right back.  Umphrey's McGee makes sure to always stop in and around Washington, DC, regularly, and this year is no different.

This January, the band will embark upon their annual winter tour - this year it is appropriately titled "umXXV Anniversary Tour." The band will show some Umph Love to the DMV when their tour blasts off into 2023 as they kick off their tour with TWO nights at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, on January 12th & 13th.

After Umphrey's manages to cram their large touring rig into the 1200-person capacity 9:30 Club, they make their way North. To mark their 25th anniversary with all the pomp and circumstance we would hope for, they head to The Capital Theatre in Port Chester, New York, on January 20th & 21st to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their first show at Bridget McGuire's Filling Station on January 21st, 1998. On January 21st, umVIP kicks off the night with a pre-party at Garcia's, featuring a festive catered private show by Hartliss (Brendan Bayliss and Jennifer Hartswick). Full pre-party details can be found at the umVIP page.

Stay tuned for more information, but we know that Umphrey's McGee is planning an umXXV retrospective as they continue to spelunk 25 years' worth of archived audio, video, art, and more.

Pre-sale tickets and umVIP packages will go on sale Tuesday, October 11th at 10:00 AM local time, with a public on sale beginning Friday, October 14th at 10:00 AM.

See you all at our beloved 9:30 Club in January!

Tickets Are Going Fast – The Del McCoury Band Are Coming To The Barnes At Wolf Trap In January 2023

In the world of bluegrass music, there is only one 'Del.' - Del McCoury  and he is the definition of a true patriarch and ambassador of bluegrass music, his name synonymous with bluegrass music.

Even among the pantheon of music's finest artists, Del McCoury stands alone. From the nascent sound of bluegrass that charmed hardscrabble hillbilly honkytonks, rural schoolhouse stages and the crowning glory of the Grand Ole Opry, to the present-day culture-buzz of viral videos and digital streams, Del is the living link and has maintained a legacy like few others.

To put it in modern terms, "Del is the OG of Bluegrass," whose life is intertwined with the very essence and beginnings of the music genre itself.  Being hired to perform rhythm guitar for Bill Monroe, who is considered the father of bluegrass himself, in 1963 is what helped shape Del into who he is today.  Monroe moved him from the banjo to guitar and anointed him lead singer, providing him with a priceless trove of bluegrass tutelage direct from the source.

"We don't have a setlist," says Del. "We try and work in the new songs, but a lot of times it's just requests from the audience. It's more interesting for the band, for me, and for the audience because nobody knows what's coming next."

Del McCoury  //  On His Performacnes

Today Del McCoury tours with his band, The Del McCoury Band, which includes Del's sons Ronnie McCoury (mandolin) and Rob McCoury (banjo), as well as Alan Bartram (bass), and four-time International Bluegrass Music Association Fiddler of the year Jason Carter (fiddle).

If you are looking for the quintessence of bluegrass music, this is the man that needs to be at the top of your list.  Attendees come for the incredible music of Del and his band, but also fall in love with his infectious laugh as he captivates us with stories from the road.

Del puts the 'Del' in DelFest, DelYeah, and DelBows and is the driving force behind his namesake festival held each Memorial Day in Cumberland, Maryland.  So while we all look forward to spending another weekend with the McCourys and The Del McCoury Band, we can also gather in the intimate Barns at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia, on January 18th, 19th, and 20th in the meantime to get our Del McCoury fix.

The stage was aglow with music and celebration all weekend at the inaugural Ramble Festival
Festival Reviews

Ramblin On Underneath the Harvest Moon

With cooler temperatures sneaking in, hours of daylight getting fewer and fewer and holidays just over the horizon, we have come to the time of year where we sadly bid farewell to festival season on the east coast.  Thankfully, one last trip to the stage was available and thoroughly enjoyed by those of us who were able to attend the first ever Ramble Festival in Darlington, Maryland October 7th, 8th and 9th.

Hearing of the inaugural event when they announced themselves onto the scene back in the Spring and continuing to build anticipation with a stellar lineup announcement a few months later, organizers of the brand-new festival definitely did NOT disappoint.  Headlining acts The Travelin McCourys, Leftover Salmon and Keller Williams I Grateful Grass set the scene for a great time, while Harford County proved to be the perfect setting to enjoy a beautiful few days of Fall festival fun (say that three times fast).  Adding in some late-night fun with Neighbor, fan favorite covers thanks to Pink Talking Phish, one helluva get-down, care of Big  Something and a collective three band super-group to close out the weekend on Sunday, and there was no doubt some off-the-charts fun that was awaiting ticket holders.

Brandon ‘Brick’ Lohr and Jason Hubert - the creative force behind Ramble Festival

An almost textbook example of ‘takes one to know one’ was more than obviously the reason that the atmosphere was so relaxed and enjoyable down at Ramble's inaugural year.  Due almost all in part to the fact that the organizers of the marvelous event, Brandon ‘Brick’ Lohr and Jason Hubert are two frequent festival goers themselves – these two know what crowd-pleasing means.  Clear detail and thought were put into every nook and cranny of the experience and easily justify why we, as ticket buyers, continue to do what we do and how much we have come to love it.

"The Vibe Tribe" were everywhere at Ramble Festival and enriched the experience for everyone!

The absolutely amazing group of volunteers that worked at Ramble, certainly lived up to their name ‘Vibe Tribe’ and were one of the best things about the festival, in my personal opinion.  From the moment you arrived at Camp Ramblewood, the tie-dye, t-shirt-wearing crew welcomed you and directed you to parking and camping as well as provided positivity and smiles the whole weekend through.  They could be seen helping folks find things that were lost, telling you where you could find the Chill Pavilion to participate in activities and even creating a parade of their own that wandered through the festival grounds to spread the festival cheer.

Kicking the music off day one and following suit the next two mornings as well, Naptown Brass Brand marched their second line straight to the stage to get things started.  Waking up to the sounds of New Orleans brass to winding down the nights at campfire jams that kept the music going until the wee hours of the morning, are just two more examples of how well thought out  and planned the experience of the whole weekend was by organizers.  The two festival-friends-turned-business-partners in this venture, figured that they should give organizing one of their own a try and were an undeniably success!  In this attendee's opinion, they definitely know what they’re doing and truly outdid themselves, hitting it out of the park.

Ramble was a festival where there are no VIP’s because "we’re all VIP’s" and that mentality alone worked to make everyone feel equally welcomed and excited to be together.  The campsites and cabins that were available for the folks who were staying overnight were set in locations easy to get to and had incredible access to the stages. If you arrived early enough on Friday, you were even granted time to take your car to your site to unload your gear as opposed to schlepping it across the camp, which was a true blessing and usually unheard of.

Another easy addition that any party planner worth their weight in fun knows, is that a good theme can only add even more pizazz to an event or gathering.  Themed nights that included ‘Light It Up’ (Friday), ‘Roar It Out’ (Animal Onesies - Saturday) and ‘Drink It Down’ (Octoberfest – Sunday) giving everyone even more opportunity to apply some uniqueness to their own experience over the weekend.  Additionally, the Chill Pavillion had fun to offer in different ways with a crystal ball relaxation, plant propagation party (LOVE THIS), and of course the standard options - to take care of our bodies after boogying all night - with some stretch and flow options.  If you took the time to stop by and see what the area had to offer, you were definitely not disappointed and the peaceful glow that was given off at night was just another variety of wow that Ramble had to offer up.

Doing even more good than just hosting one heck of a party, the fellas also decided to incorporate some good for the community by hosting a donation drive benefiting Rage Against Addiction.  All weekend long, they had a booth and were accepting items to run a house and personal hygiene supplies supporting women transitioning from substance abuse treatment to recovery.  Even better was an auction that had some absolutely amazing items up for grabs.   Stef's Cereal Bar was set up a short distance from a fire pit and lovingly served hundreds of servings to festivalgoers around the clock.  The cereal bar was invited by the festival because although they were serving free cereal to anyone who wanted it, they were accepting donations so they could help serve underprivileged children breakfast in inner-city Philadelphia.  Ramble Festival also wanted to introduce a new vibe to the festival circuit - a Master of Ceremony with all the moxy and energy a festival could handle - Libby Eddy.  A beer hall and live muralist, two campfire jams, a swing circle and a layout where everything was close and manageable to meet friends and add layers as the evening went on are also high on the list of what else Ramble did oh so right.

Not surprising, but something all ears were absolutely delighted to hear before the weekend was over, was that there would indeed be a Ramble Festival year two and even better, could already purchase tickets for!  Cheers to Fall Festivals and Ramble Year 2 – can’t wait to see you all there!!
