Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway Are Coming To The Birchmere On June 27

If you were at DelFest '14 over Memorial Day Weekend, you had the opportunity to see Molly Tuttle perform not once but TWICE - each time, leaving an indelible mark on the audience.

Molly Tuttle is among the most compelling new voices in the bluegrass and Americana music world. A native of Northern California, Tuttle headed east, immersed herself deep in the heart of bluegrass, Americana, and country, Nashville, Tennesse, and surrounded herself with an incredible group of musicians.

In 2017, Tuttle was the first woman to win the International Bluegrass Music Association's Guitar Player of the Year award. In 2018 she won the award again and was also named the Americana Music Association's Instrumentalist of the Year. Tuttle's has surrounded herself with an impressive and dynamic band. Golden Highway is filled with some of the best emerging talents in the bluegrass scene. Fiddler Bronwyn Keith-Hynes was the 2021 International Bluegrass Music Association's Fiddle Player of the Year and is one of the bluegrass fiddlers of her generation. Accolades and awards aside, the rest of Golden Highway is overflowing with talent, including Dominick Leslie (mandolin), Kyle Tuttle (banjo), and Shelby Means (bass).

Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway come to The Birchmere with a brand new album, Crooked Tree, in tow, released in April 2022. This album was recorded live at Nashville's Oceanway Studios and simultaneously honors the bluegrass tradition while pushes the genre into a new direction. This album is a delightful follow-up to her 2020 album But I'd Rather Be With You.

For those who had the opportunity to see Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway perform at DelFest, this is a rare opportunity to see this bluegrass virtuoso twice in a few short months. For those that missed out on the chance to see Tuttle and her mesmerizing Flatpicking and clawhammer guitar playing, this is a chance to see her and her superb band perform live and up close in our beloved Birchmere on Monday, June 27th.

Paul McCartney’s Magical “Got Back” Tour Touches Down And Takes Flight At Camden Yards

For the first time since 1964, Paul McCartney played a show in Baltimore. The nearly three-hour set he and his band played on Sunday, June 12th, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, was filled with more than Beatles/McCartney/Rock and Roll fans could expect. McCartney ties together multiple generations, from very near the birth of Rock and Roll, through his most recent McCartney III, which debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Top 200 in the US and hit number 1 in the UK.

Paul McCartney performs at Camden Yards

More than chart-topping success brought fans to this show, as young parents stood with children on their shoulders, next to their own parents. McCartney's music is a thread of history that has touched and connected people in the most sincere and profound way that art can. The music of Paul McCartney is part of the musical fabric of our planet. His music does not belong to a particular time period or generation. His songs are universally known and embraced around the globe and connect people throughout the globe and tie multiple generations together.

A pre-show DJ entertained the audience

A pre-show DJ stood on the stage, spinning Beatles songs and McCartney solo works while a gorgeous collage of historic photos swept past the side stage screens until 8:30 PM. At 8:30 PM, the stage lights went down, and the easily recognizable and exceptional orchestral gliss from the crescendo of "A Day In The Life" boomed from the PA speakers. Then came the exclamation point of the song - the crash of the piano chord from the final moment of the most innovative Rock and Roll work written to that date echoed throughout the stadium, and the anticipation was overwhelming. The band came out at that moment and, to live a long-standing cliche, it sounded like a Beatles concert, screaming at an unknowable decibel.

A pre-show DJ entertained the audience
Sir Paul McCartney

Opening with "Can't Buy Me Love," followed by "Junior's Farm," the band shot out of the gate on fire. McCartney worked through a fabulous mix of Beatles songs and solo works, new and old for nearly three hours. The show really started to launch into another world when Sir Paul stepped to the very front of the stage on a separate platform with just his acoustic guitar. He proceeded to play "Blackbird" while that platform rose a couple dozen feet into the air and the screens that adorned so many spots on and along the side of the stage showed beautifully designed visual animations. Completing that song Paul talked about John Lennon, his boyhood best friend and writing partner that changed the world with him. He said back in those days you really didn't think to tell people just how you felt about them, and he never got the chance to tell that to John in so many words. So he played a song he wrote for John shortly after he died, "Here Today." This was a truly poignant song that spoke for the deep love that Paul had for John and was all that he wished he could say in person. At this point, the performance started to show heartfelt and raw emotion.

Sir Paul McCartney
George Harrison & Paul McCartney again and together on stage

Later on McCartney brought out a ukulele and told the story of how great a ukulele player George Harrison was. Paul had a Gibson ukulele that George had gifted him, and he talked about how they would get together and play together as younger men. One day he told George that he had learned one of George's songs to George's delight, and they loved playing it together. He then went into a beautiful and re-imagined version of the Harrison classic, "Something." Fantastic images of George as well as the two of them as young men played on the center screen behind the band. Just as McCartney showed his deep love for John Lennon, he showed equal love and poignant affection for Harrison. As he performed "Something," McCartney found an opportunity each time he did not have to sing to turn around and take in the parade of photos projected behind him. This moment, like so many others during this performance, made this vast stadium performance among tens of thousands of fans somehow seem like the most intimate, personal, and touching performance one could possibly take in.

George Harrison & Paul McCartney again and together on stage
Sir Paul McCartney

Later the most emotional moment of the night took place, leaving more than a few of the gathered mass wiping tears. Paul said that Peter Jackson, who put together last fall's three-part documentary film "Get Back," had rung him up and told him he could isolate John's vocals and he could sing with them if he wanted. Paul said, "Uh yes, please." The band then went into "I've Got A Feeling." At the point when John would enter with his vocals, there appeared John Lennon on the screen behind the band from the documentary film, as they were on the rooftop playing their final concert. The clarity and tone of Lennon's voice was simply amazing as John's voice echoed in the cavernous stadium, and for just a few minutes, John was truly alive and loud once more deep in the heart of Baltimore. During their virtual duet, Paul spent long periods of time turned to the back of the stage, watching his mate singing again, then got to turn to a mic and sang too. It was really better than I could've imagined it, a beautiful moment, again personal, intimate. When the song finished, Paul quietly said, "I got to sing with him again."

Sir Paul McCartney
Sir Paul McCartney and his longtime touring band

Before the set of encores, the band finished as big as one could ever hope a band could end the night - a hard-charging, powerful, and emotional rock and roll spectacle. First came "Live and Let Die," complete with colossal pyrotechnics, explosions, fireworks, and jets of flame all around the stage. It was a genuine big rock show, leaving no one in their seat. McCartney followed that immediately with a joyous "Hey Jude," and finished the song by directing groups in the crowd through the Na Na Na's. It is one thing to hear McCartney sing "Hey Jude," but to hear a stadium with tens of thousands singing in joyous unison to a song that has captured our hearts for almost fifty years. This might quite well be the most genuine meaning of "music to my ears."

Sir Paul McCartney and his longtime touring band
Everyone in the audience wanted to capture their own personal keepsake of the concert to take home and treasure.

It was a shared moment for everyone - shared from Paul to everyone in the crowd, shared between fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives. People arm in arm, swaying to the familiar refrain, tens of thousands of cell phone lights waving in every corner of the stadium.

Everyone in the audience wanted to capture their own personal keepsake of the concert to take home and treasure.

Sir Paul would return to the stage for an eclectic mix of Beatle songs including "I've Got a Feeling," "Birthday," and "Helter Skelter," before performing what could easily be called the greatest album medley of all times. Then, tearing at our heartstrings and emotions, McCartney and his band would launch into that timeless medley of "Golden Slumbers," "Carry That Weight," followed by a no-holds barred version of "The End" from Abby Road.

Sir Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney brings out the best in all of us.

Although Paul McCartney did not perform "Magical Mystery Tour," the music took us there. McCartney was able to take us all away on a Magical Mystery tour, and during this magical evening, we were all swept away with joyous emotion. Everyone was together in a shared experience of singing, smiling, crying, and just happy to be there in that moment - the best art can do.

Sir Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney brings out the best in all of us.

Umphrey’s McGee And The Disco Biscuits Get D.U.M.B. In Baltimore

On an idyllic Friday night in Baltimore, two powerhouse jam bands brought the heat to the Inner Harbor. Umphrey’s McGee and the Disco Biscuits have led the scene side by side for more than 20 years and have hosted an annual resort-based festival called “Holidaze” together since 2013. The two bands joined forces once again for an unforgettable night of soaring improvisation and dance grooves on June 10, 2022.

Joel Cummins of Umphrey's McGee

Joel Cummins

We caught up with Umphrey’s McGee’s keyboard wizard, Joel Cummins, before the show who opened up about the reason they’ve revived this co-headlining bill 15 years later. “Even though we haven’t done the D.U.M.B. tour in a long time, we’ve been doing Holidaze together and it’s been an event we all look forward to,” Cummins said, “But I don’t think there’s going to be a Holidaze event this year, so we wanted to give our fans some place to see us together.”

Joel Cummins of Umphrey's McGee

The connection between the two bands has evolved, but the love and respect between them is clear. Cummins shared his thoughts on how it’s changed saying, “Being 15 years older, the competitive element is of course still there, but it’s more relaxed and fun for all of us now.”

Aptly and facetiously named the D.U.M.B. tour, the two bands embarked on an eight-date national tour and delighted fans at MECU Pavilion (aka Pier Six Pavilion) with two extra-long sets that each highlighted the bands’ respective strengths and showcased their overlapping appeals nearly three decades into their careers.

Brendan Bayliss of Umphrey's McGee

Umphrey’s McGee kicked off the festivities with a sequence of four songs debuted in 2006 or earlier, transporting the crowd back to the last D.U.M.B Tour in 2007. Following quick runs through “Wife Soup” and “Uncommon,” the fan-favorite “All In Time” gave the band its first opportunity to stretch its improvisation legs with the group latching onto a simple metal hook from lead guitarist Jake Cinninger before he and guitarist Brendan Bayliss broke the jam down into a minimalist trade-off before the rhythm section came back with a vengeance and morphed the jam into a soaring arena rock climax before turning to a gentler conclusion.

Following the first section of “Eat,” the band transitioned to an extended version of “Draconian” with a groovy funk jam that provided 17 minutes of dance beats as the sun began its descent over the harbor. The start-stop jam featured outstanding contributions from drummer Kris Myers and percussionist Andy Farag behind a synth-driven foundation from keyboardist Joel Cummins.

The band stayed in form with extended improvisation in “The Silent Type” and “Seasons,” with both jams allowing bassist Ryan Stasik to lead the way with silky runs up and down the fretboard, holding down the low end and adding deep texture behind the rest of the band’s shredding peaks. The Umphrey’s classic “Bridgeless” closed out the set, putting an exclamation point on the opening half of the show.

As the stage was turned over for the Disco Biscuits and darkness overtook the venue, new light rigs were set up to allow the Philadelphia-based jamtronica quartet to accentuate their set with the trademark light show that brings layers of intensity and excitement to their shows.Following a quick, tongue-in-cheek ceremony bestowing the Jam On Fantasy Football trophy to Sirius XM’s Ari Fink, Bisco kicked their set off with “Helicopters” and smoothly transitioned to “Miracles,” giving both songs ample room to breathe with improvisation led by keyboardist Aron Magner on the former. The “Miracles” jam featured tempo changes, dynamic range, and inspired work by guitarist Jon "The Barber" Gutwillig who found an energetic hook and milked it for all it was worth.

The set continued with “Another Plan of Attack,” a new song debuted just the night before at the D.U.M.B. tour opener. This new song prominently features a harmonizer effect for Barber’s vocals and instrumentals that evoke house and trance music with a shredding guitar climax. This track will make jam band fans with an appreciation of Daft Punk groove until their feet hurt in venues across the country as the band finds new ways to incorporate it into their setlists. Following a quick return to “Miracles,” the band continued with this vibe in “Who’s In Charge,” launching into a 25+ minute exploration with infusions of funk and house throughout before another seamless transition to “Orch Theme.” The band put the finishing touches on a stellar set by finishing “Helicopters” before returning from the encore break for a quick rendition of “King of the World.”

Jon "The Barber" Gutwillig of The Disco Biscuits

The return of the D.U.M.B. can only be described as “triumphant” and it was a pleasure to see two bands still at the top of their game touring together in a celebration of friendship between both the bands and their fans. D.U.M.B. returns in August for four shows in the Midwest, concluding with a two-night stand at the Caverns Amphitheater in Pelham, TN.

DelFest ’14 – The Glorious Return of The DelBow & All Things Del!

Festival Season is here again and there’s no denying that the road back to Cumberland for DelFest was a long-awaited one. This delay seemed to only make the return of one of the country’s premier festivals to the Allegany Fairgrounds for musicians and fans alike, that much sweeter. As always, pickers and players had the chance to arrive early for the Academy portion of the festival, which is something that makes DelFest so unique and a draw for all levels of music lovers. This is where friendships and collaborations are made that would be heard and last throughout the weekend and hopefully beyond.

The Del McCoury Band Soundcheck on Day 1 of DelFest '14

The Del McCoury Band

As fans began to unload themselves on the campgrounds, Del held his soundcheck and seemed to be even happier than the crowd to be there. Noting that he didn’t remember ever seeing a Thursday this crowded, he joked that maybe they should take another three years off. The infectious smile and heartwarming giggle that host Del McCoury shared with the audience countless times, with what seemed like every musical act, reminded ticket buyers of why the festival is one that they will return to over and over again. The sense of community that is ever-present at stages, across the campground and amplified by welcoming activities like the kid's zone, is the icing on the cake to musical magic. Del also plays a welcoming host, always interacting with the audience, taking requests, telling stories, and sharing moments with people far and near to the stage. This is just another part of the festival that makes everyone in attendance seem like one collective group of friends getting together to share a holiday weekend and not just folks who paid to get in.

Della Mae finally gets to perform at DelFest after a previous rain out

Della Mae

Weather is always another very noticeable guest at the festival and it was ready to return this year in full force. Artists were often heard commenting on what got thrown our way. The ladies of Della Mae were one of the most excited to return to the festival it seemed, noting that the last time they were on the lineup, they were rained out and that this was essentially, their first time playing at the festival.

The Ghost of Paul Revere, hailing from Portland, Maine weren’t quite used to the heat this early in the season, telling the audience that they, “were hot and when we get hot, we get weird and we want you to get weird with us.” Pert Near Sandstone took to the stage during Friday's rain, letting us know that where they’re from ‘this is called snow’. The clogger who they had onstage was also encouraging, as they said that he was there to make you dance faster, because the faster you dance, the less wet you get, which to everyone, made total sense.

The Ghost of Paul Revere

New music was something that several of the acts from the past weekend were eager to share and the words “we recorded some new music” or “we’ve got a new album coming out” were heard quite a few times from not only Del and Tyler Childers, but many more.

Tyler Childers performs alongside Del McCoury

Tyler Childers & Del McCoury

Tyler Childers was the much anticipated headlining guest of the final day, and you couldn’t deny the swell of fans that came on board for the Sunday sets eagerly awaiting the Kentucky native. Opening his set with ‘House Fire’ got everyone ready for a great performance as he dipped his toe into familiar hits like ‘Honkey Tonk Flame’, truly goosebump-worthy acoustic versions of ‘Nose to the Grindstone’, ‘Lady May’ and ‘Follow You to Virgie’. He talked to the audience often with his southernly gentlemanly demeanor telling tales of his struggles earlier in the week and even then a heartfelt tale of a song he learned when he was five years old. Being joined on stage by the main man himself, Del, who was clearly happy to have Tyler back at another DelFest, ‘Old Country Church’ brought smiles to all the faces onstage.

The wide range of talent that shows up at the festival year after year in Cumberland is made even more memorable by the shared stages, artists at large and guest appearances to already jaw-dropping talent. In addition to Del stepping out with everyone from The California Honeydrops to Sam Bush and Leftover Salmon, we were treated to special memories like Molly Tuttle and Sierra Hull sharing space on the Potomac Stage, and Ronnie McCoury seeming to join just about every set there was, somehow still ‘keeping it cool’ as merch likes to poke fun at with him.

It appears, if Ronnie were punching a clock, it’s almost guaranteed that he would have started earning overtime hours before Saturday’s music even started. Closing out one of the sets, Ronnie also decided to orchestrate ‘the day the mandolins destroyed the world’ bringing what was just about every mandolin player onsite to the stage for the closer of “Rawhide.”  Add to that the full band that he also is a part of - The Travelin' McCourys, who are nothing short of amazing, and truly outdid themselves this year, especially the final night of the festival. They supported not only headliner Tyler Childers, who brought a noticeably large number of fans in for the day, but also closed out the festival with a phenomenal late-night set in the Music Hall. As they often do, the fellas paid homage to The Grateful Dead incorporating hit after hit into the wee hours of the morning.

Ronnie was not the only member of Del McCoury's band that was having fun this weekend, Jason Carter also a member of The Del McCoury Band and The Travelin' McCourys was found sitting in on every stage and performance there was across the festivals. If Jason Carter wasn't onstage he could be found hanging out amongst the crowd enjoying the music taking place on stage.  Carter was not the only music fan enjoying the entertainment within the confines of the crowd. At almost stage, an artist would take to the stage for an unexpected but satisfying sit-in or would be spotted inconspicuously enjoying the rip-roaring music taking place on stage or giving a subtle wind or gesture to their friends on the stage. DelFest is where music lovers and musicians alike spent four days with endless music and moments that we had all spent the last few years pining away for.

What makes DelFest so truly special and memorable for people of all ages that come to the festival.  If you ask a hundred people at DelFest you would certainly hear about a thousand different moments that occurred on the stages and throughout the campground.  While we were privileged to witness some of these precious moments, we listened to thousands of stories with reverence, awe, envy, and shared joy.

Some events happened on stage that were recalled like whimsical and mythical fairytales - a Sunday Gospel set, Steve Poltz and Vince Herman walking into the audience to sing a responsive "This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie, a "Songs and Stories Session" where musicians shared deeply personal stories behind their songs, and a surprise parking lot session with the California Honeydrops among others.

What better way to recover from some sizzling performances than a lovely float down the Potomac River

Perhaps the best memories that we take away from DelFest are the intangible moments that cannot be planned or bought - floats down the Potomac River to cool off,  a couple getting engaged during Cabinet's performance, a children's parade through the campgrounds, a handwritten setlist handed to you from a stage, campground jam sessions, shared meals and beverages ranging from grilled cheese, pot lucks, or the best Gumbo you have ever had.

Small acts (on and off the stage) change the world!

Small acts (on and off the stage) change the world!

They say that money cannot buy happiness, but when you buy a ticket to DelFest, you are purchasing the opportunity to the rarest and greatest thing that money cannot buy - memories and friends that will last you a lifetime.  You cannot plan special, and that special just happens.  When you attend DelFest you don't plan for special, but special almost certainly to find you.  This is precisely why people return to DelFest year after year.  If you are like us, the first thing you think about as you start to tear down your campsite is "when do tickets go on sale for next year's DelFest."

Small acts (on and off the stage) change the world!

Small acts (on and off the stage) change the world!

No one ever wants to leave a festival, but it’s impossible to leave DelFest without having gained experiences and friends that will last for a long time to come. Until next Memorial Day weekend when we all return to the beautiful Appalachia Region to sing, dance and give each other Delbows once again, take good care y’all!  We leave you with The California Honeydrops performing "Ripple" by The Grateful Dead.  While we remember a great weekend of bluegrass, we want to embrace that spontaneous joy that overflowed out of every corner of DelFest from the wee hours of the morning to the twilight of the evening.

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

We cannot wait to see you at DelFest again and rest assured we will be bringing you ticket and lineup updates on DelFest '15.  Be sure to check out DelFest.com and their Instagram Account regularly for updates.

Sights & Sounds Of DelFest

While the performances at any given festival are usually stupendous and magical in every way, the true character of a festival exists off the stage.  We wanted to highlight the unique sights and sounds around the festival ground that make DelFest so unique and make it the most beloved festival we know.  From the DelBow to the DelYeah!, and everything in between, these are some of the sights and sounds that make DelFest so cherished by everyone that passes over those railroad tracks into the Allegheny County Fairgrounds in Cumberland, Maryland.

The Infamous Stringdusters Bring A Sizzling Performance To A Sweltering B Chord

For the second year in a row, The Infamous Stringdusters settled in for a three-night residency at B Chord Brewery in Round Hill, Virginia.

The picturesque view from B Chord's Lawn

For three starry days and nights, The Dusters provided a reason to head out to B Chord and enjoy the serene landscape, outstanding music, and a return to leisurely summer indulgences. For three glorious days, the music of The Infamous Stringdusters resonated at B Chord alongside The Sweet Lillies, Serene Green, Pictrola, and The Dirty Grass Players.

The picturesque view from B Chord's Lawn

DC Music Review made the pilgrimage out to B Chord to enjoy the music on Saturday, May 21, 2022, to enjoy a beautiful blue day out in the Shenandoah to enjoy the music of Pictrola, The Sweet Lillies, and The Infamous Strindusters.

The Sweet Lillies

The Sweet Lillies

The audience was treated to several hours of original songs by each band, including songs from The Sweet Lillies' forthcoming album and The Infamous Stringdustes Toward The Fray. The unexpected cover songs by each band turned the most heads, drew out beaming smiles, and had the audience dancing out of their lawn chairs. Pictrola would end their performance with a fantastic "Brain Damage / Eclipse" finale from Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. After listening to The Sweet Lillies perform, it left little doubt as to why The Infamous Strindusters brought this infectiously talented trio from Boulder, Colorado, to support this residency. The Sweeet Lillies certainly turned heads when they performed unexpected Americana versions of "She's Crafty" by The Beastie Boys and "It's Tricky" by Run DMC. Not only would Chris Pandolfi of The Infamous Strindusters sit in with The Sweet Lillies, but The Sweet Lillies would also join The Infamous Stringdusters in the evening's finale "Not Fade Away" by Buddy Holly / The Grateful Dead. After such an impressive performance by The Sweet Lillies, we can only hope that this multi-faceted and incredible trio from Colorado makes it back to the DMV more in the coming years.

The Infamous Stringdusters perform at B Chord Brewing

The Infamous Stringdusters would perform two sets at B Chord that transitioned from a roaring daylight performance to a ferocious evening performance. Jon Stickley joined the Infamous Stringdusters this evening, filling in for Andy Falco as he attends to his newborn son Teddy. Throughout the evening, the audience joined the Dusters' rally cry of "Teddy Strong!" as we all wish for a complete recovery by the youngest Falco. The Infamous Stringdusters performed two sets seamlessly segueing between classic songs, new songs from Toward The Fray, and cover songs. Continuing the day's tradition of performing cover songs, The Dusters would include several memorable covers, including "Walking On The Moon" by The Police, "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk, "Wake Me Up" by Avicci, and "Casey Jones" by The Grateful Dead.

For those that have not seen The Infamous Stringdusters perform, they live up to their reputation as the best progressive bluegrass band on the concert circuit. Larry Keel Experience Coming To B Chord On June 11

Larry Keel is set to bring his Larry Keel Experience to B Chord Brewing on Saturday, June 11th.  This appearance is a homecoming and hometown appearance for Keel who was born just a short distance from Round Hill, Virginia in Manassas and has musical roots in Fauquier County and the Shenandoah Valley.

Larry Keel is an award-winning innovative flat-picking guitarist who was raised in a musical family steeped in the mountain culture of Appalachia, Virginia.  Keel began from an early age to forge a distinctive sound, taking traditional music and infusing it with modern light. With the acoustic guitar Keel has brought the flat-picking form to its highest level of sophistication and sonic power with his muscular, yet refined style of playing. As a composer and singer, Keel integrates raw honesty and charming grit to form a unique brand of music he calls 'experimental folk', songwriting that is filled with reality, imagination, imagery, and mood. He has appeared on over twenty albums, twelve of which he produced, and has written songs that have been recorded and performed by distinguished artists including Grammy-award winners Del McCoury and The Infamous Stringdusters. Keel has collaborated and continues to merge creative forces with some of the greatest artists in modern roots music such as Tyler Childers, Billy Strings, Al DiMeola, Tony Rice, Keller Williams, and Sam Bush, to name a few.

Keel and his band are fresh off an electrifying performance at the Charm City Bluegrass Festival on April 29th.  What an incredible performance by this band in Baltimore, Maryland,  with a sizzling sit-in by fiddler Jeremy Garrett of The Infamous Stringdusters which included jaw-dropping  "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp" by Led Zeppelin.

Seth Walker Brings His Blues To The Hamilton on June 16 In Support Of His Latest Album

Singer/songwriter Seth Walker is set to perform at The Hamilton in Washington DC on Thursday, June 16th. Walker will bring his blues music to DC to support his eleventh studio album, I Hope I Know. Joining Walker at The Hamilton is Annapolis-based band Pressing Strings.

Walker was born and raised in Altamahaw-Ossippee, North Carolina, United States, with classically trained musical parents. He learned to play the cello at the age of three and gravitated towards the blues in his teenage years, finding inspiration in the work of B.B. King, Snooks Eaglin, Ray Charles, and T-Bone Walker.

The album, set to be released on May 20th, was produced by Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers and includes three songs co-written with Oliver Wood and renditions of songs by Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Bobby Charles.

I Hope I Know is a beacon of light, each of its ten songs shining forth with what many have come to love about Walker and his soulful Americana: diverse influences, contemplative lyrics, that signature blue tone on the guitar, and movement both geographic and spiritual. The album is a beautiful reckoning with heartbreak, moving across states, not knowing when the next tour will begin, among other mysteries encountered day to day existence. The ten-track collection could best be described as Walker's' round-midnight album. Its tempos are slower and tonality darker than on previous work, one where Walker had to "sit with it," trying and failing without forcing anything: not time, not the songwriting or its grooves, not a sense of control, not even his own healing. The first sessions for the record began in 2019, however, the breakup of a longtime romantic relationship and the onset of the pandemic in 2020 led Walker to relocate from his home in Nashville, Tennessee, to Asheville, North Carolina, not far from where he was born and raised. A romantic breakup, a pandemic, and a pause on live music can certainly give any of us a case of the blues.

Fast-forward to June 2022, where the pandemic is slowly fading, live music is coming back in full force, and beautiful cathartic albums like I Hope I Know are seeing the light of day.  We now set inside The Hamilton and enjoy musicians like Walker perform songs from his latest album as we enjoy the soothing blues sound resonating throughout the venue.

We look forward to welcoming Welker and Pressing Strings to The Hamilton in just a few weeks for a memorable night of incredible blues.

Charm City Bluegrass Festival 2022 – Festival Season Makes A Glorious Return To Baltimore

This past weekend music fans from throughout the region once again descended on Druid Hill Park in Baltimore, MD, for a truly spectacular music festival  - none other than Baltimore's beloved Charm City Bluegrass Festival.

Positivity And Music Radiated from Charm City Bluegrass Festival 2022

Despite Charm City Bluegrass being less than a decade old, it has gained national attention and played host to the who's who of bluegrass and Americana musicians.  Each April since 2013, just after tulips emerge from the ground after a long winter rest, Druid Hill comes alive with music and thousands of happy feet dancing on the gentle green slopes in front of the stage.   Just as we collectively look to Punxsutawney Phil's arrival indicating Spring is drawing near,  Charm City Bluegrass is another seasonal milestone that marks live outdoor music's arrival.

Positivity And Music Radiated from Charm City Bluegrass Festival 2022

Being that the 2020 edition of Charm City was canceled, music enthusiasts across the DMV  held their breath and anxiously awaited the eventual return of this cherished festival lying deep within the heart of Baltimore.  For the past two years, through various ways, fans continued their support of the event however they were thrilled to see the stages just outside of Rawlings Conservatory roar back to life last weekend.  With the pandemic waining, the anticipation was palpable, and 100 days before the festival was to take place, the lineup for the 2022 edition was announced.

It was a perfect day for Charm City Bluegrass

On April 29th, musicians and fans alike gathered in Druid Hill Park and were blessed with blue skies and warm weather to maximize the feeling that went along with delightful music and all the sights and sounds that go along with this treasured music festival.  For two days, crowds danced in front of the stages and under the trees, browsed the vending booths, and enjoyed activities throughout the festival, seeing faces old and new that brought smiles to everyone you walked by.  This weekend was Baltimore's moment to enjoy a sunny, warm weekend and embrace the joy that is Charm City Bluegrass.

Jeremy Garrett sits in with The Lil Smokies at Charm City 2022

Closing out the first night of music was Yonder Mountain String Band's headlining performance.  This set was accentuated by the exceptional fiddling of Jeremy Garrett of The Infamous Stringdusters.  Garrett had the honor of being an Artist-at-Large at this year's event and could be found adding his fiddle prowess during multiple performances throughout the weekend. Garrett's sit-in with The Lil Smokies was another memorable highlight as he performed a dueling fiddle performance with Jake Simpson and the rest of the Smokies.

The second day of the festival was kicked off by Philadelphia's own Darlingtyn, who would underscore an ever-present theme throughout the second day - the spirit and songs of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead which undeniably loomed large over the festival.  As many know, long before he became the legend of psychedelic and jam bands, Jerry Garcia was a bluegrass enthusiast and a prolific banjo player.  From the opening act of Darlingtyn who performed “Shakedown Street” to the concluding performance by Hiss Golden Messenger, Jerry's music and joy would fill the air.  We do not want to take away from the beautiful and exceptional bluegrass that resonated throughout the weekend as there was spectacular original bluegrass music resonating throughout the festival, but it was worth mentioning the continued influence that Garcia has on the bluegrass, jam grass, and Americana genres.

The lineup at this year's event drew from a long list of enormous talent, making it difficult to highlight any particular performance, as they were all exceptional.  Charm City celebrated national acts Jake Blount, Fireside Collective, AJ Lee & Blue Summit, Hackensaw Boy, Armchair Boogie, The Lil Smokies, and Hiss Golden Messenger.  Charm City also showed local love, and embraced local DMV talent, including Wicked Sycamore, Justin Trawick & The Common Good, and Dori Friedman among others.  Local musicians had an opportunity to shine as Justin Trawick & The Common Good opened the festival on the first day and even performed again on the second day.  Wicked Sycamore performed twice on Sunday, which allowed concertgoers to see the depth and power of their music and stage presence.

Charm City Junction

Charm City Junction

Charm City Junction, a staple of this festival, provided a memorable performance as local fans jammed the barrier rails to be closer to their hometown band.  Leaving no stone unturned for local talent, the United States Navy's bluegrass band Country Current also made their presence known.  Washington DC native Jake Blount returned to the region from his new home base in Providence, Rhode Island, to leave an indelible mark on the crowd.

Wicked Sycamore

Wicked Sycamore

This year's Charm City Bluegrass lineup had something for everyone.  Wicked Sycamore ended their outdoor set with "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" by Whitney Houston.  At the same time, Fireside Collective performed a fiery rendition of "Eyes of The World" by The Grateful Dead and Lil Smokies performed a ferocious version of "The Power Of Love" by Huey Lewis.  Hiss Golden Messenger sprinkled in "Mama Tried" and "The Bird Song", another few by The Grateful Dead, and AJ Lee & Blue Summit performed "Cumberland Blues" by The Grateful Dead.

More thoughts of Jerry Garcia danced in our heads as we returned to our vehicles and hummed one song that echoed in our heads despite not being played this weekend - "Ripple" by The Grateful Dead, with fitting lyrics that we carry on preparing for more and more weekends just like this one -  "I don't know, don't really care / Let there be songs to fill the air."

Hiss Golden Messenger concludes Charm City Bluegrass Festival 2022

Congratulations to the organizers of Charm City Bluegrass for ensuring that the festival survived these turbulent few years and ensuring that music could once more fill the air of Druid Hill Park.  We already look forward to the 2023 edition and look forward to what breathtaking acts will grace the stages next year.

In 2007, Umphrey's McGee and The Disco Biscuits teamed up to co-headline a tour and used their initials to name it the D.U.M.B tour. In 2022 Umphrey's McGee and The Disco Biscuits are each touring separately. However on seven glorious nights this summer, the two bands' tour schedules intersect as they become D.U.M.B. once again!

"Small Strides" from Asking For A Friend

On July 1st Umphrey's McGee releases Asking For A Friend. This album is accompanied by a behind-the-scenes podcast through Osiris Media entitled Talking Circles. With episodes leading up to the album release and stretching through the summer, Talking Circles will tell the story of the writing and recording of this set of brand new songs. Three episodes are currently live, including the backstory of the latest single from "So Much."

"Small Strides" from Asking For A Friend

We  just cannot wait to see these two fantastic bands perform live under the same tent.  Ticket information and links can be found below. And for you vinyl addicts out there - don't forget you can pre-order Asking For A Friend on vinyl here.
