Logic - College Park
Album Review, Made in The DMV

Logic Returns To His Roots With The Release Of His Album “College Park”

On February 24th, Logic dropped his ninth album, College Park, his first independent project since departing from Def Jam Records. Throughout the album, Logic reflects on his upbringing and reminisces on his days as an up-and-coming rapper. Emitting echoes of his old sound, it’s clear he isn’t just returning to his roots with the album’s title and track names.

We all know this world-renowned, chart-topping, MTV award-winning,  platinum-record-selling artist but perhaps overlooked is his connection to the DMV.  In 1990, Logic was born Sir Robert Bryson Hall II at Shady Grove Hospital in Rockville, Maryland.  Ascending from the roots of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Logic has never failed to mention where he is from. In songs like 1995, "Gang Related", and "Everyday" amongst others, he reflects on different aspects of the DMV, whether he’s talking about past events or making it big “for the 301”. Now, with the release of College Park, Logic is adding even more DMV tributes to his list.

To announce the release of his album, Logic created a graphic that resembles the green line on the DC Metro Map. The image even features an outline of the district as well, making it a partial replica. With the Metro stop for College Park, Maryland being second on the rail line, it is clear why Logic chose this as his album announcement image.

Although originally from the DMV, he currently resides in Los Angeles where he held a free listening party and Q&A for the new album. On February 23rd, a day before its release, fans gathered to earn a pass for the event. In Logic’s recap video for the event, many fans proudly announce that they slept in their cars or waited in line all night to make sure they could gain entry.

The listening party may have occurred in Los Angeles, but the album lives in the heart of the DMV. With several songs and artists tying Logic to his roots, his intention to highlight his journey to success is explicit. Keep reading to find out more about how the album binds to the DMV!

DMV Featured Songs:

Gaithersburg Freestyle

The title of this track speaks for itself, letting fans immediately know this is a song dedicated solely to Logic’s youth as a rapper. The song features four DMV native artists: C Dot Castro, Big Lenbo, Ade, and Fat Trel. Within the song, Logic mentions several DMV staples, such as U Street, a music-oriented neighborhood in Washington, D.C., and Bohemian Caverns, a now closed-down D.C. restaurant that would host music acts.

Although the single mainly features DMV elements outside the city Logic grew up in, the name Gaithersburg Freestyle  is the perfect final tie to make it a wholesome and nostalgic piece. The lyrics may not specifically discuss the challenges Logic faced prior to fame but the song itself embodies the essence of his childhood.

38.9897 °N, 76.9378 °W

This song is named after the coordinates that lead to what now is a parking garage on the University of Maryland’s Campus in College Park. When looking at this on a map, it may seem insignificant. However, to Logic, these coordinates reflect the exact spot where he decided to jump-start his music career.

The two artists featured on the track, C Dot Castro and Big Lenbo, are also DMV natives who were friends with logic since the start of his music career. The track reflects all three of their rise to music, compared to their life now. Given their history together, their musical origins, and their longtime friendship, it is no surprise Logic picked Castro and Lenbo for this track.

DMV Featured Artists:

C Dot Castro

DMV native rapper C Dot Castro has been making music for over two decades. Although born in Virginia, the artist grew up in Maryland, graduating from Gaithersburg High School. He is a long-time friend and collaborator of Logic’s. In fact, in 2022, he signed to Logic’s independent record label, BobbyBoy Records. Much like Logic, Castro left the DMV to move to the west coast, in hopes of finding better opportunities for his music career.

Big Lenbo

Rapper and songwriter, Big Lenbo grew up in Maryland, spending a lot of time in and around the District. During his youth, Lenbo became very close with Logic, even letting Logic live in his basement in 2009, after dropping out of high school. Lenbo was first featured on Logic’s Album The Incredible True Story and later appeared on Everybody. He is known to be part of the Rattpack, a music crew created by Logic that stands for “Real All The Time”.

ADÉ

Formally known as Phil Adé but now as ADÉ, the rapper and producer from Silver Spring, Maryland has been featured on Logic’s albums numerous times. In 2009, at just 19 years old, ADÉ was signed by R&B artist Raheem Devaughn to 368 Music Group, a DC-based independent label. For a while after he was signed, ADÉ released numerous albums under the name “Phil Adé”. However, in 2019, after taking an extensive break from music, he shorted his name and came back with a new, refined sound.

Fat Trel

Born in Washington, D.C., rapper Fat Trel received his big break in 2011, following the release of his single Respect With the Tec, where he performed with Juicy J, Joey Bada$$, and Smoke DZA. In 2013, Trel signed with Rick Ross’s label, Maybach Music Group, releasing his first and only project with them titled, Gleesh. From then on, Trel went on to release projects on his own, while teaming up with members from MMG such as Wale. Rick Ross, and Yowda. His most recent album, Big Homie, was released under DTLA records. However, he is currently releasing songs with Asylum records. Trel’s most recent single was Gaithersburg Freestyle, where he rapped alongside DMV locals as part of Logic’s College Park album.

The Head And The Heart & The Revivalists Co-Headline At Merriweather Post Performance on July 8th

Summer 2023 feels just around the corner, and with that, performances at Merriweather Post Pavilion cannot be that far behind.  The Head And The Heart have announced an exciting run of tour dates of 2023, including co-headline tours with Father John Misty and The Revivalists.

The Revivalists will co-headline with The Head And The Heart at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Saturday, July 8th, 2023, and will be joined by Jaime Wyatt.

Initially self-released in 2011, The Head and The Heart’s self-titled breakout debut produced instant classics including “Rivers and Roads,” “Down In The Valley” and “Lost In My Mind”.  Let’s Be Still and 2016’s Signs of Light, settled into Billboard’s Top 10 albums chart. The band’s fourth full-length album, Living Mirage, was released to critical praise in 2019. “  The album’s breakout track, “Honeybee”, became a fan favorite with 153 million + total global streams and one million global weekly streams.  The band has established its status as a touring powerhouse, having landed prime-time mainstage slots at Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits. In total, the band has performed 15 times on national television including appearances on Ellen, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Austin City Limits, and more. On April 29, 2022, the band released their fifth studio album, Every Shade of Blue.

The Revivalists are no strangers to the Washington DC / Baltimore Metro Area and have been delighting fans since they first performed at Bangkok Blues in Falls Church in 2010.  Since then, we have seen this New Orleans band on the stages across the region  - from the smallest venues like Clare & Don's Beach Shack in 2010, to the single largest indoor music club in the United States, The Anthem in Washington, DC, in 2020.  Other notable appearances in the region include three appearances at Lockn' Music Festival in 2014, 2017, and 2019, as well as an appearance at Wolf Trap in 2018 and Merriweather Post Pavilion at DC101's Kerfuffle in 2019.   Needless to say, David Shaw (lead vocals, guitar), Zack Feinberg (guitar), Andrew Campanelli (drums), George Gekas (bass), Ed Williams (pedal steel guitar), Rob Ingraham (saxophone), Michael Girardot (keyboard, trumpet), and PJ Howard (drums, percussion) have all been very, very good to the region.  Their fifth album Pour It Out Into The Night is set to be released on June 2nd, 2023, and can be pre-ordered here.

Tickets will be on sale today, Friday, February 24th at 10 am.

Colony House Is Coming To The 9:30 Club On March 5th

Indie Rock band Colony House is coming to the 9:30 Club on Sunday, March 5th, 2023, along with Little Image.  This "landlocked surf rock" band released their fourth album, The Cannonballers, earlier this month and have been crisscrossing, or should we say cannonballing, across the United States in support of this incredible new album.

Twenty-Twenty-Three has been a banner year for Colony House.  Less than two weeks ago, they kicked off their Cannonballers Tour at a sold-out performance at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and will spend the next few months on the road.  In June, they will make their Bonnaroo debut. Their lead single off of their latest album, "Cannonballers",   just cracked the top 40 on the iHeart Alt-Rock Chart!

The "landlocked surf rock" band has a storied history - their debut album, When I Was Younger, included the single “Silhouettes,” which became the #1 most-played track on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation for four months straight. They followed up with Only The Lonely, including the surf-rock hit, "You Know It," which went viral on Tik Tok and has amassed 100 million streams across all platforms to date. They've appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, CONAN, The Today Show, VH1’s “Morning Buzz,” and MTV Live and more, as well as at festivals like Shaky Knees, Austin City Limits, Firefly, WonderBus, and Lollapalooza.

While *on pause* in 2020, after the release of Leave What's Lost Behind, Colony House produced and directed a full-length feature film, “Everybody’s Looking For Some Light,” which debuted at a two-day drive-in event at Greystone Quarry in Franklin, TN, and was an official selection at the Nashville and Knoxville Film Festivals. The Cannonballers is an apt addition to the Colony House catalog, which includes songs like "Silhouettes," which became the #1 most-played track on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation for four months straight when it debuted in 2014, and the surf-rock viral hit, "You Know It," that has amassed 100 million streams across all platforms to date.

The music of Colony House is made up of brothers Will Chapman and Caleb Chapman, as well as Scott Mills and Parke Cottrell. Their personal genre designation is as much inspired by their hometown of Franklin, Tennessee, as their new album The Cannonballers.  “In short, Tennessee was the inspiration for this project,” frontman Caleb Chapman says. “We got to see the seasons change and experience our home again for the first time in a long time. I think I was falling back in love with Tennessee, and I started revisiting some old memories and old relationships in my head that pertained to certain geographical locations as well as just emotional places I had spent my most formative years.”  We think many of us can relate to how we spent the early part of the pandemic.

We have included links to their 2021 live album, "Colony House Live, Vol 1", below so you can get a small sliver of what you will hear when you see them perform live. We cannot wait to hear Colony House perform at the 9:30 Club on March 5th, and hear these, along with new songs, resonate inside this beloved DC venue.

Tedeschi Trucks Band performs at The Warner Theatre in February 2023
Concert Reviews

Tedeschi Trucks Band Roars In Like A Freight Train For The First Weekend Of Their Warner Theatre Residency

If you heard the thunderous roar emanating from the Warner Theatre this weekend, you know it was Tedeschi Trucks Band's annual return to the Warner Theatre.  The highly anticipated yearly event kicked off on Thursday, February 16th, 2023, and carried on for three incendiary nights in downtown Washington, DC. This monstrous, twelve-piece, wall-of-sound band returned to DC to kick off yet another six-night residency.

Tedeschi Trucks Band has been delighting fans at the Warner Theatre since 2011, and this year was no different.  The question on everyone’s mind this weekend was how they would integrate the twenty-four songs from their 2022 masterpiece album, I Am The Moon, into this residency.

Susan Tedeschi sings directly to her adoring fans

They kicked off Thursday night's performance with a thunderous version of "Anyhow." Then, after lighting the fuse on an explosive night of music, Tedeschi introduced four songs off of I Am The Moon into their Warner Theatre Catalog - "I Am The Moon" and "Pasaquan" from  I Am The Moon I: Crescent, "Rainy Day" off of I Am The Moon II: Ascension, and "Take Me As I Am" off of I Am The Moon III: The Fall. The band would end Thursday night's performance with a high-octane version of "Let Me Get By." Fans left Thursday night overjoyed that their band was back in town and firing on all cylinders - just as fans have come to expect.

Susan Tedeschi sings directly to her adoring fans

On Friday, the band gave little respite to fans who may have been up until the wee hours of Thursday, seeing Susan Tedeschi, Kebbi Williams, and Ephriam Owens join Midnight North at The Hamilton two blocks away. TTB would continue to integrate new songs from I Am The Moon, including "La Di Da" from I Am The Moon II: Ascension, "Yes We Will" and "Ain't That Something" from I Am The Moon III: The Fall. While Thursday's performance was impressive, Friday night's performance would end with a beyond powerful thirty-five minutes, starting with "Midnight In Harlem" followed by "Made Up Mind" and finally ending with an encore of soulful "Stand Back > Mr. Clean > Stand Back."

Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks are once again firing on all cylinders at The Warner Theatre

By the time TTB took the stage on Saturday, February 18th, the audience had settled into this marathon journey the band was taking us on. Before the show started, audience members debated which of the previous night's performances was better - Thursday or Friday, and what songs might lay ahead. The catalog from which TTB draws from is so comprehensive that it always keeps their fans guessing and dreaming. Moreso, TTB rarely plays a repeat during a residency, so fans were ticking off which one of their favorites had already been played and which ones they thought would be in tonight's performance.

Derek Trucks

The audience erupted in cheers as the opening notes of "The Letter" by The Box Tops was played by Gabe Dixon. As with previous performances, it took mere seconds for the band to go from zero to sixty and erupt from singular notes to the dynamic and rich wall of sound they are known for. A song may start with a trickle, a few keys by Gabe Dixon, followed by the drumming of Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eady, then followed by the thunderous voice of Susan Tedeschi. Then brass elements layer into the song with the best brass section in live music consisting of Kebbi Williams, Ephriam Ownes, and Elizabeth Lea. Then the best slide guitar player in the world, Derek Trucks, punctuates the song with guitar riffs that pierced the theatre. How can a TTB song get any more powerful, you ask? As the band takes flight, the already roaring sound is filled in with the vocals of Mike Mattison, Mark Rivers, and Alecia Chakour. Rolling Stone best described the band as an "outfit [that] puts out a big band sound that still rings intimate, shaking listeners to their emotional core."

Mike Mattison

On Saturday, the band would show their members are world-class and exceptionally multi-talented. Mike Mattison would come to the front of the stage with his guitar in hand and sing "Fall In" and later in the evening, keyboardist Gabe Dixon would play the drums while drummer Isaac Eady would play the guitar. TTB does not follow a formula where a band member sticks to a single role - the experience and the songs are shared. Within each song, band members pass song leads to one another with invisible passes and seamless handoffs. One never knows where the musical journey will take us. The band delivered thunderous music as they segued musical contributions from one another like a Leslie Speaker or Hammond Organ - welcome to the Church of Tedeschi Trucks. After an hour of unleashing the raw power they are known for, they would end the first set with an explosive "I Want More" and "Soul Sacrifice."

Mike Mattison
Derek and Susan perform "I Can See You Smiling"

When the second set started the crowd was delighted to see Derek Trucks walk on stage not with one of his Gibson SG guitars but instead with his cherished acoustic 1932 Gibson L-00 guitar and sat beside Susan Tedeschi to perform "I Can See You Smiling" from I Am The Moon IV: Farewell. This was only the third live performance of this song and a special acoustic treat for the crowd. This opening song was followed by two more I Am The Moon songs - a short but up-tempo and gumbo-rich "So Long Savior" followed by "Here My Dear." This last song was the first song released from I Am The Moon I: Crescent, and as Susan Tedeschi beautifully delivered this song as a rotating projection of the moon's phases appeared behind the band.

Derek and Susan perform "I Can See You Smiling"

Later in the evening, the crowd would sway from side to side as they sang the harmony with Susan Tedeschi on John Prine's classic "Angel From Montgomery." The band would then launch into "That Did It" by Bobby "Blue" Bland before deciding to give the audience precisely what they wanted and needed - the final powder keg of the weekend with an over-the-top version of "Bound for Glory" as the band overcame some technical issues to leave the audience still cheering for more. Finally, for the encore, the band would deliver "Show Me" by Joe Tex and would, for the final time tonight, pass around the song lead from one band member to another, all the while as the light show erupted into colors and columns of light-filled and bounced off the art deco features of the Warner Theatre.

The Warner Theatre lights up with the explosive energy of Tedeschi Trucks Band

After three high-powered performances, this twelve-piece powerhouse band has left their fans exhausted, elated, and exhilarated. Fans were able to see and hear firsthand how songs off of I Am The Moon would integrate into a residency - performing eleven of twenty-four songs from this album. For three unforgettable nights, Tedeschi Trucks Band weaved between their existing catalog and introduced their newest songs. They would perform some of our favorite staples and introduce us to new favorites - and the band is only halfway through their residency.

Time will tell which of the remaining thirteen songs will be introduced during the second half of their Warner Theatre Residency and what existing songs have yet to be performed. This pursuit and mystery of songs is the joy and the delightful burden for any TTB fan.

Speaking of these remaining performances, tickets are still available for the second half of their residency on March 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. We, like you, are looking forward to seeing what songs will be performed in the remaining shows and how the band intends to end its residency. For those that have tickets, we look forward to seeing you again soon. For those that have yet to purchase tickets, if you've read this far, maybe you're willing to come a little further and join fans in two weeks.

Seventeen-year-old Appalachian-style folk musician Nora Brown will make her debut at the Kennedy Center for a live concert taping of NPR's widely-syndicated radio show Mountain Stage on February 24.

Nora Brown started learning music at the age of six from the late Shlomo Pestcoe.  From his tiny studio apartment in Brooklyn, Pestcoe instilled in her the belief that music is meant to be shared.  Brown shares with the world her traditional music with a focus on Southern Appalachian banjo and guitar playing.

Getting To Know: Jamie Potter’s Love Manifesto

Here's a story about an artist who exemplifies love. Jamie Potter has been making music in the DC area for a long time as a solo artist, with his wife Amy in their bourbon-infused Americana band,  The Crooked Angels, and in the Grateful Dead cover band Elixir of Life.  He's also the author of a marvelous young adult novel, Thomas Creeper and the Gloomsbury Secret, about a teenage mortician’s apprentice, so he knows how to tell a good story, which he does beautifully over the course of his latest solo album, Love Manifesto.

This album covers a lot of terrain over the course of twelve sweet and bittersweet, moving and thoughtful songs hitting on themes like love at first sight, the beauty of imperfection, and importance of gratitude. Beyond the excellent songwriting, hints of whimsy, and gracious delivery of smart lyrics, this album offers even more love potential: a portion of the proceeds will go directly to the organization Pet Connect, who work to help prevent the amount of strays in our communities, and place the tenderest, most dynamic and loving creatures with families and away from high-rate kill shelters.

DC Music Review had a chance to connect with Jamie to find out more about Love Manifesto, and his love for animals, writing, classical music, and some of his favorite musicians in the DMV area.

Hi Jamie! It's such a treat to connect with you, I've been a fan of your music and creative endeavors for well over a decade. I want to get into this album but first, tell me about your musical background, I feel like you have stories to share.

First, I just want to say what a supreme privilege it is to be part of this incredible DC Music Review interview series! I’m so grateful.

One of my clearest, earliest musical “A-ha!” moments is being five or six, sitting in the back of our old station wagon, and hearing Billy Joel’s “Theme from an Italian Restaurant.” We take a lot of these songs as commonplace now, and so maybe the novelty has faded. Hearing that song for the first time — the way the story develops (stories within stories, actually,); the basic opening arrangement, the swells and builds, the return at the end of the song to that little restaurant table —  it is probably an understatement to say that my young mind was blown!

I’m grateful to my parents for bringing music into our home and car stereos and to my older brother for sharing the musical “goods” with me on mix tapes. I remember hearing Bob Marley on a mix, singing and playing with just an acoustic guitar on the “Acoustic Medley” from the Songs of Freedom box set. I remember being moved beyond words. It was more powerful than a full orchestra. The spirit and vibe is what matters most.

Be A Love Sleuth

Beginning piano around that time opened up a world of sound. Every note has a harmony note, bunches of them, actually. Isn’t that cool? Classical is still the biggest love of my life. I am a great ham-fister of Beethoven sonatas. Rachmaninoff is my homie. One of my piano heroes, Vladmir Ashkenazy, said that young Rachmaninoff is all about expanding outward, all that lushness and fullness. Older Rach is all about collapsing inward, and I wonder if we all do that in our own way with time. I just turned 40 and feel like expanding for another 40 years, not collapsing. We’ll see what gravity and grace have to say about that.

Somehow I'm not worried about you not continuing to expand. It's what you do!

You describe this upcoming album, Love Manifesto, as a sort of “low-fi sonic diary of the past 10 years with love as the major theme." Tell me more about it.

I’m a very DIY guy. I guess that’s kind of an aesthetic by default? A junkyard dog. A rag ‘n bones man. A Tom Waits disciple. Can we put strings on this thing? Oh, that’s an old sewing machine, so maybe not. But maybe?

My mantra for 2023 is “Preservation Not Perfection.” I knew I wanted to do something to boost awareness for the rescue organization my partner Amy and I love and are affiliated with as fosters and recipients of life-changing furry angels — Pet Connect Rescue. Maybe a song, a little happy single. So I started going through the “archives” of old laptops and dusty thumb drives and I started to realize there was a story there. One of my guitar students last year brought in a song to learn for class that was basically a very low-fi nihilistic anthem. That gave me a little courage to be like, “So this guy is whining and playing an out of tune guitar. And he’s got like three million streams?” Can’t compete with that. But maybe I can put out a little more hopeful message. Nihilism is definitely not going to get us through this century, although my heart is with young people navigating a time period where adults have few answers.

I love that mantra. Might adopt it for my 2023 if that's cool with you. So talk to me more about making this DIY album.

These recordings are all about a decade of trying to capture moments in my basic home studio — late nights with the burst of an idea for a song, early mornings with coffee in hand and a dog at my feet. I tried to do everything from the inside out, write it, engineer it, learn to play all the instruments, do the cover art. With the exception of my friend and multi-instrumentalist genius, Nick Sjostrom, who plays bass on “Hearts Like Ours” and kindly mastered the record (thank you, Nick!), I kind of pulled it off. I use an old early 2000s M-Audio preamp. There’s nothing really flashy here. But neither were those old Smithsonian field recordings.

The other fun virtual collaboration is the opening track (“Little Pink Dress Rag”). I bought a pack of live percussion loops recorded by great New Orleans-based percussionists and made a basic rhythm backing track by sequencing parts of those loops. All the proceeds from the purchase of the loop pack went to support continued Katrina relief efforts. To sound even more pretentious than I already do in this interview, that’s the creative alchemy that Love Manifesto is about. A million streams gets you what? A hundred bucks? What if we took some of that raw love material and transmuted it and used it to boost more love and awareness for the helpers and furry angels who enrich our lives? Pets, music, and food are the things I’ve found anyone from any political persuasion can talk about and become brothers and sisters in the conversation, not enemies. Let’s boost that conversation and maybe we’ll survive this century.

The other thing is vulnerability. This is a twelve-track sonic diary. Is that even right to put out into the world? I think so, because it’s raw but not evasive. You hear a human in these recordings — fingers on strings, a vocal that almost gets it right, not a machine. You hear big synths and drums and then everything is quiet like a door was shut and it’s just a guy and a guitar. That’s an aesthetic I learned from another hero, Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam. Tea for the Tillerman came out of his hatred of the schmaltzy “star machine” recordings he had to make when he was built up as a teen heartthrob at the beginning of his career. He always said he loved the directness of his guitar and voice on a little home recording setup more than those polished recordings. Maybe I never really got over Bob Marley playing “Acoustic Medley” or Big Bill Broonzy singing “This Train.” I’m fine with that.

I listened to the album front to back and loved it. The theme is prevalent, yet there's such diversity woven throughout the tracks.  There was some 1950s innocence,  some low hum Radiohead electro vibe, Buddy Holly nods, and straight up great songwriting through and through.

Tell me more about the opening song on the album, "Little Pink Dress." Gosh I adore this one. It reminds me of a sweet little love song that combines folk tunes from my childhood with a little bit of a Mockingbird twang to it.

I think this song could be on a children’s album as easily as an adult record. I love so many musical genres, because music is like food. But I would say Country Blues is pretty close to the vibe of what I love most. There’s a lot of basic blues imagery in this song. I wanted the jazz guitar and the slide resonator to sort of play off each other. I wanted to focus on a simple love, a simple promise. But there’s also the part about the “boys from town,” and not letting them “hold you up so high just to let you fall back down.” Maybe that’s The Great Gatsby when Nick sees the two women at the Buchanan house for the first time. “The only completely stationary object in the room was an enormous couch on which two young women were buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon. They were both in white, and their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house. I must have stood for a few moments listening to the whip and snap of the curtains and the groan of a picture on the wall. Then there was a boom as Tom Buchanan shut the rear windows and the caught wind died out about the room, and the curtains and the rugs and the two young women ballooned slowly to the floor…”

Clearly you are a writer. And a reader. I love how words from the page play into your songwriting ethos.  So next up, about midway through the album the song "I Saw You" blew me out of the water. Can we get Samara Joy to cover this one?  Tell me more about this humdinger.

I wanted to write a response to “The Girl from Ipanema” if she was a real woman, not some bouncy, flouncy caricature. I call her “sorrow’s lonely daughter” in the song. It’s a love song, that lightning bolt Romantic thing of falling in love with someone completely at first glance. Then the narrator doubts if he’s coming on too strong. Maybe the song is all his inner monologue as he’s watching this real woman who’s as blue as the water she’s standing in. He decides at the end to just say “I saw you.” Like an old Village Voice ad. He needs to back off. Maybe he’s not the answer to her sorrow. Maybe he is? That’s the hide-and-seek of love. Hopefully you get to be seen in your heart of hearts and that you see someone else that way without masks or dissembling. That may be the gift of love.

It's disarming and gorgeous. And so interesting to hear more about what inspired it.

And then talk to me about the song, "The Man in the Low Castle." I was feeling some really cool Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen, and Jackson Brown vibes in the music, and the lyrics were really open and gratitude-filled.

“The Man in the Low Castle” is probably me talking about how our egos and ladder-climbing can make us strangers to each other. I’m not so naive to not know what it takes to keep a creative life afloat. I’m extremely lucky to have a supportive family, to have flexible jobs in restaurants and children’s publishing that I can float in and out of, and still make music in the background. I think we are estranged from nature and from ourselves most of the time. You’re really lucky if you can get to a moment or a place when the sun is shining and everything is kind of radiant and you and whoever you are with feel that glow together. That can get you through some really tough times. Music is medicine. Thank you to all the venues and supporters that allow us to keep filling that prescription, day in and day out.

What song of yours (from whenever) are you most proud of and why?

“The Firefly Room” on Love Manifesto is the most recent track on the record, written about a year ago. This one is a direct love song to my partner in all things, Amy. It’s older, slightly maturer love, I suppose, but not without any magic missing. Amy is magic personified. Healer, animal-whisperer, poet. The song is also about the beautiful imperfections which make us human. “With your rings, with the silver in your hair, your crooked tooth, your perfect heart to share.” That’s the unique currency, the good stuff. Aging is strange and wonderful, and I wanted to connect the silver of currency with the silver of age.

So another favorite thing about this album is that you are using it to boost visibility for Pet Connect. As someone who has adopted two dogs, this makes my heart sing. I know you and Amy are animal lovers, too. Tell me more about your involvement with Pet Connect.

My life has been forever changed by the four furry angels we’ve received through Pet Connect. Somehow being animals they’ve made me more human. Kinder, more patient. I think I can bring those feelings and skills into our weird, divisive world because of them. Music and animals give us therapy even when we don’t know they’re doing it. Our late-great border collie/hound mix Bessie kept our house together just by her presence. I can’t tell you what a void it was when she passed in August, but I probably don’t because you’ve experienced that abundance yourself.

For this record I’m asking people to take any funds they might think of using to buy a record (I know, I know, we are all streaming these days) and spend it instead on supporting Pet Connect.

I have special bonuses for bigger donations, limited for my sanity, but definitely fun. A $100 contribution gets you a personal song written for you or a loved one. A $250 contribution gets you a personal song and a personal sketch. A $500 contribution gets you a house concert in the DMV area, and for a $1000 donation, I will travel anywhere on the East Coast for a live performance. Yes, there are limits on how many bonuses are available, but I'm hoping people feel compelled to give to this great organization. (For more information on how to get these donation perks, you can email Jamie at jrpotterbooks@gmail.com.)

I’m hoping in my small way, not only to bring some support financially to Pet Connect’s amazing efforts through this record, but to boost awareness of their “Spay to 1K” Plan. Here’s a little food for thought about their 2021-2022 annual report: “With a total investment of $122K, over 2000 cats and dogs were spayed or neutered across 13 communities, and 8 states. Based on averages provided by the ASPCA, these 2276 animals and their progeny could have produced over 4.4 million offspring in their lifetimes.”

I am all for it. So tell me a little more about you, I know you're an author as well.

When I’m not writing songs, I’m writing and illustrating spooky and nerdy books for young readers. My debut YA novel Thomas Creeper and the Gloomsbury Secret about a reluctant thirteen-year-old mortician’s apprentice who unlocks the secret of his hometown came out during the height of the pandemic. I’m so grateful the book is traveling the world, in over 150 libraries I can track online, and part of two teaching curricula here in the US and the Dominican Republic. You can read the Booklist review here if you like. The sequel hits shelves on June 15th and it’s a doozy! In September, I have a YA cyberpunk retelling of Alice in Wonderland coming out as well. I also write and illustrate literacy-boosting fiction for educational publishers Pioneer Valley Books and Heinemann Publishing. If we can keep young people reading, I believe we might survive this century.

Jamie Potter

Amen to that, and I can't wait to read the sequel. I adored all the weirdos in Thomas Creeper and the Gloomsbury Secret, I would want to be friends with those misfits back in the day. Heck, even today!

Okay, last question for you, tell me about a local artist that you admire.

Friends and songwriting heroes The Honey Dewdrops keep pushing me to write more earnestly and maybe not as lightning-fast as I like to write. To draft and hone. It’s been a joy being able to see them grow as writers and performers and to hear some of their newest works performed in our little living room for house concerts.

The Honey Dewdrops are wonderful, and I love how quickly you answered that question. And I'm really excited for this album to drop and for all the love to come pouring in to Pet Connect.

Thanks so much for sharing with me, Jamie, and for sharing so much of yourself and your creativity to the world in such positive ways. It's cool to know someone like you!

The pleasure was all mine, thank you again for listening to this love-inspired sonic diary and being so supportive. I am very grateful!

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Start 2023 Off Right With Two Sold-Out Nights At The 9:30 Club

Braving the freezing temperatures, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong fans, collectively known as "The Flock," descended on the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, on February 3rd and 4th, 2023. The band, hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, decided there was no better place to kick off 2023 than with a two-night run just down the road from their native nest.

To start the weekend right, Dale and the ZDubs performed and showed the audience that Ska and rock reggae are alive and well and can wash away the stress of the work week. The audience was overjoyed with a reggae-inspired version of The Grateful Dead's "Scarlet Begonias" and could not help but dance to a ska version of "The Bumblebee Tuna Song."

Greg Ormont

Now that the audience was relaxed and warmed up when Pigeons Playing Ping Pong took to the stage on Friday night, they hit it hard and set the mood like champions entering an arena.  Appropriately starting the show with the Chicago Bulls theme on 2/3/23, aka "MJ (Michael Jordan) Day," paying tribute to the legendary basketball player, the entire venue felt electric, and attendees were more than excited for the evening, if not a weekend, of music by this beloved band.

Greg Ormont

Always known for being a good time, the band got right to it, heading into a lengthy version of the favorite "FU" right away, leaving us no chance to question if it was going to be a fun Friday night or not - it is always going to a fun Friday when flying with The Flock! The way that the band can infect the audience with energy and fun is one of the reasons they continue to grow their fan base. The good time guaranteed when seeing Pigeons is clearly obvious, whether on a festival lineup or a headlining show, by the masses that continue to show up.

Selling out two nights at 9:30 Club is just one notch on the fellas brag-worthy belt. Almost a hometown show for the Baltimore boys, it was easy to see there were many a friend and family member in the audience. Fans of the band travel long distances to see them perform and you could hear fans catching up on their adventures since they last saw one another since the sell-out New Year's Eve run at the Stage AE in Pittsburgh, PA. Showing love for the venue and everyone there, lead singer Greg Ormont was vocal about how happy they were, and always are, to be back in the District.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong perform under a spectacular light show at the 9:30 Club

The light show at the 9:30 Club was beyond hypnotizing throughout the weekend. The synchronicity as well as the diversity of patterns and colors made it worth the price of admission alone - come for the music and be entranced by the light show. The band's incredible jams never fail to take you on a journey that you don't want to end. A perfect example of doing just that was with the version of "Donkey Hotel" during the second set that continued on long enough to forget where we started.

Jeremy Schon in the spotlight

One of the most memorable moments of the show was the spotlight solo of guitar player Jeremy Schon as an intro to "Horizon," a clear crowd favorite. A single light illuminated an almost romantic solo that seemed to entrance the entire venue.

Let us not forget that each member of this foursome are masters of their craft and are each a world-class musician and performer. While Schon and Ormont were in the spotlight, you know that Alex "Gator" Petropulos was crushing the drumkit, and Ben Carrey was working the shadows and jumping on his bass amp or jumping on the drum riser.

Every time any fan gets to experience being a part of "The Flock" they always seem to have more fun than the time - DC Music Review staff included. This is why we all will continue to show these guys love and support when they are out on tour or appear on a festival lineup.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong in full flight at the 9:30 Club

After an exhilarating two nights at the 9:30 Club, the band will take a brief rest before embarking on the rest of their Winter Tour, starting in Aspen, Colorado, on March 15th and heading back East to conquer the East Coast of America. We look forward to flying with The Flock across the United States at Domefest, DelFest, and other magical moments of pure Pigeon bliss that await us on our funktastic horizon.

The Crystal Casino Band, One Of DC’s Very Own, Headlines At The 9:30 Club In Support Of Their Latest Album

Washington DC’s The Crystal Casino Band is releasing their new album Maryland House today, January 27th, 2023, and will officially celebrate the album's release with a headlining show at the 9:30 Club on Thursday, February 9th.  Maryland House marks the sixth overall full-length album from the rising indie rock quartet, who have amassed over 10 million streams on Spotify.

Washington, DC's The Crystal Casino Band is releasing their new album Maryland House today, January 27th, 2023.  To celebrate the album's release, TCCB will celebrate with a headlining show at the 9:30 Club on Thursday, February 9th.  Maryland House marks the sixth overall full-length album from the rising indie rock quartet, who have amassed over 10 million streams on Spotify.

Formed in 2015 as a group of friends at George Washington University, The Crystal Casino Band, originally named The Colonies, began their sonic journey heavily influenced by the likes of The Strokes and The Black Keys. Over the course of their college years and a few lineup changes, the band's sound transformed to combine their initial influences with the vibes of early 2010s-era indie that littered Tumblr dashboards and increasingly introspective and socially-conscious lyrics. With this turn to introspection and social awareness, the independent quartet grew uncomfortable with their original name's imperialist connotations and changed it to their current one in 2020.

The Crystal Casino - Maryland House

The Crystal Casino - Maryland House - Released January 27, 2023

Maryland House is the band's most complex and varietal album to date. It is a winding journey with unexpected turns that showcases their love for the DMV and pays homage to their lives as young adults throughout this thirteen-song album.  Maryland House is named for the band's favorite rest stop along I-95 and is an instantly recognizable landmark to everyone in the DMV.

This new album showcases the artistic growth TCCB has undergone since the release of their 2021 album, Not About You, and is unlike anything the four-piece – Pete Stevens (guitar, vocals), Joey Mamlin (drums), Jarrod Hendricks (guitar), Jordan Mullaney (bass) – has done before.  The band's vocal diversity on the album is some of the growth the band has undergone. Pete Stevens is not the only vocalist on this album, as each member now has a lead vocal track. Additionally, the album shows the band's growth and diversity of the instruments. New instruments include trumpet, ukulele, mandolin, and harmonica. We should all be on the lookout for these new instruments on stage at the 9:30 Club.

TCCB has invited the band Jeff Draco to open for them at the 9:30 Club.  Jeff Draco is another local DMV band comprised of local musicians who are former University of Maryland students.

As a DC-based outlet, it brings us tremendous pride to celebrate the achievements of the incredibly talented musicians from our community.  We look forward to celebrating the achievements of The Crystal Casino Band along with their latest album on February 9th, at the 9:30 Club.

The Del McCoury Band performs at The Barns of Wolf Trap in January 2023
Concert Reviews, Interviews

Strings and Stories with Del McCoury At The Barns Of Wolf Trap

We don’t recall a show we’ve been to before where it started OFF with a standing ovation for the band that is playing, but the crowd at The Barns at Wolf Trap was so DELighted to see this band take the stage that the welcome was completely understandable.   An intimate and sold-out show for all three nights of Del McCoury Band was just what we had hoped to see for the man who plays host so well to audiences large and small.

Not far from the fairgrounds that play home to thousands of attendees and a fan favorite, DelFest, Del mentioned his excitement to return to the DC area and more specifically, Wolf Trap itself:

Del McCoury performing at The Barnes of Wolf Trap

“We get to see a lot of our old fans and we have new fans there too, that's one of the things I look forward to. I like that and I like the interior of that barn -  all the timber - it was took out of an old barn up north somewhere. I don't know where it was, but Mike told me that one time and all that old timber is really nice, you know, it's homely.  Being there and looking around, it makes you feel at home.  Everything about it, the dressing rooms even, I like the way it’s set up and I always look forward to playing there.”

Del McCoury performing at The Barnes of Wolf Trap

Familiar faces filled the barn each of the three nights and it was evident that many of them had either met or enjoyed music together before, a fact made obvious as they greeted each other with a ‘DelBow’ (an interaction born at the famous DelFest that McCoury hosts each Memorial Day Weekend).

Del McCoury entertaining the crowd with yet another incredible story.

Del McCoury entertaining the crowd with yet another incredible story.

Talking with Del the week prior, he shared the story of how the Allegheny Fairgrounds came to be home for DelFest and what the community there means to them.  In the hunt for a location, there were a few spots that Del and his team visited, however when they got to Cumberland, they knew that would be the spot for a gathering that thousands return to year after year.

Del McCoury entertaining the crowd with yet another incredible story.

Del McCoury entertaining the crowd with yet another incredible story.

“And then we went into the fairgrounds and I told him I said, you know, it's a nice place to have a festival, and it’s better than a lot of places.  You got the river and you get to that mountain over there, which is West Virginia, and you got that flat spot there in Maryland.  So I tell him, I said you know, as far as I'm concerned, I don't think we need to go any further here, I like this spot.”

“So that's what we did. You know, and of course, there's always politics in a community, everybody knows that. You learn a lot of things about a community when you start doing things like this, you know?  But we made it through okay and we tried to let them know and the folks all around in the community know when we go visit there, that we're not there to just play and then leave or have a festival and then leave - we want to make it a win-win.  We wanted to make it home for the people in the community and a place for people to come from all over the country.  So they put their trust in us and then we put our trust in them. And so far, everything’s worked out.”

Jason Carter and Rob McCoury The Del McCoury Band

The man himself shares the stage with four other incredible musicians and fiddle player Jason Carter seemed to be a crowd favorite as he had countless opportunities to show off his skills and absolutely mesmerize ticket holders.  Losing enough hair off his bow from the frantic movements, he noted that he might have to even ‘pay the cleaning bill’ for what he was leaving behind onstage.

Jason Carter and Rob McCoury The Del McCoury Band

One thing any fan or person who has seen Del McCoury live will always agree on, is that he is one of the best story tellers you’ll ever have the pleasure of listening to tell a tale.  Talking about folks he's met and played with over the decades, traveling abroad or even just a story about the journey that he himself has been on as a musician, are all shared with a smile and a guaranteed giggle from the lead singer and guitar player.  Being in the industry for decades, he has enough tales to fill a book.

The story of how he cultivated a first-chance meeting between legendary musicians Jerry Garcia and Porter Church at a music festival in Virginia was one he shared during our conversation before the three-night run at Wolf Trap.

"I was getting ready to leave because I had played that day, and I had to go to the next show somewhere, and I run into David (Grissman).  David was with Jerry Garcia and he wanted Jerry to hear a local DC guy named Porter Church, who was there, play.  He asked me if Porter was there, at that festival and I said, 'Yeah, I just saw him- I'll take you up there, but I gotta go soon.'

So we went up the hill and walked up to him (Porter) - he was sitting outside of his pull-behind camper behind his pickup truck, I think.  So I took them up there and and introduced them together - Jerry and Porter - and then I left.  That was actually the last time I saw Jerry Garcia until after he had his own band."

A favorite part of any show Del is a part of is the interactions with the audience and the crowd-pleaser that he is, his set always includes a time when he asks the audience for requests.  Fan favorites are yelled out one on top of the other, sometimes confusing Del himself, laughing as he tells the story.

"We have this one song, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", and nobody ever remembers the year.  People will shout out Vincent 1962 or some other year, and I'll say, 'Well I don't know that year but I know one from 1952, so I'll play that one."

The Del McCoury Band performs at Wolf Trap

While the Wolf Trap shows remained short and sweet, they did not fall short of incredible displays from all members of the band as Ronnie McCoury (mandolin), Rob McCoury (banjo) and Alan Bartram (bass) all had a chance to step into the spotlight, causing the audience to fill the barn with hoots and hollers all night.

Another standing ovation closed out each of the evenings, provoking the band to step back onstage for just a few more songs to make everyone smile.  The last night as fans filed out of the one-of-a-kind venue, you could hear many a, "DEL Yeah - see you in May!" as we all anxiously await the 15th annual DelFest in Cumberland, Maryland where festival friends are known to become family.
