Palehound Stuns Sold Out 9:30 Crowd with Latest Album

Boston’s Palehound is the low-fi indie project of Ellen Kempner, a charismatic leading lady with a knack for storytelling. Although the 9:30 Club was filled to capacity Sunday night, with the warm lights and rich vocals coating the evening, the venue felt as intimate as a living room.

Kempner performed, both with her music and her stories, as though she were in the presence of dear friends, wearing her emotions on her sleeve. Illustrating her numerous trips to DC, each story was accompanied by an anecdote that allowed us a better understanding of the woman behind the music.

Palehound kicked off the night with “If You Met Her”, an upbeat track with heavy undertones that started off the set on a deceptively positive and energetic note. Although additional high energy tracks did follow, the rest of the night took a more melancholy turn, with a setlist that favored her newest album Black Friday.

The live rendition of “Cinnamon”, a track from Palehound’s debut album Dry Food, had a level of intensity unheard of on the recording. Kempner performed the chorus with a bit of a growl and power, which were sacrificed on the album in favor of a funky-synth autotune. Although the recorded music is fantastic, Palehound is a much richer experience in person.

Big Thief followed Palehound for their headlining performance. Quietly taking their places on a bare stage, front woman Adrienne Lenker (vocals, guitar) started their set with a solo rendition of “Zombie”. From the first note, it was clear that Big Thief needs no fancy backdrop or lighting to impress — they are the real deal, and the quartet of musicians play with a power and confidence that is rarely seen .

Both Palehound and Big Thief are easy bands to love, with beautiful powerful music that stuns and transcends. If you ever have a chance to catch either, do.

And a HUGE highlight is Sunday's Nevertheless, She Persisted - Music of America's Women Composers at The Church of the Epiphany, where "California-based composer Jenni Brandon will conduct the DC premiere of her America Belongs to Us, a work about welcoming immigrants who come to America seeking a better life, in collaboration with the Columbia Flute Choir. Also joining the line-up is African-American singer/song-writer/social activist Crys Matthews and dancers Davione Gordon, Corey Vansice, Helen Hayes and the women of Joy of Motion's Youth Dance Ensemble for an inspirational autumn arts experience."

This is  a not-to-be-missed show that's bringing together many voices, and some of the most passionate artists and youth for an important, eye, ear, and mind-opening performance.

Billy Strings

If you are a fan of bluegrass music there is one name that you have been hearing about over and over again the past several years - Billy Strings.

Peace, Love, and Billy Strings

Billy Strings is, without a doubt, one of the brightest rising stars in the constellation of Bluegrass performers. Once you witness Billy Strings and his band perform live, you will understand why, in only a few short years, he has gone from a supporting act to headlining and selling out shows around the country.  The chemisty and interplay between Strings and his touring band continues to grow and mature with each passing day - especailly as they venture into JamGrass songs. Strings tours with three other extraordinarily talented musicians; Billy Failing on the banjo, Royal Masat on the bass, and Jarrod Walker on the mandolin.

Strings is  not just  limited to bluegrass - far from it. He is known to be a big fan of rock, metal, and jam bands. DC Music Review has seen him pick up a white Fender Stratocaster and perform alongside Greeensky Bluegrass where he played and sung a commanding version of Chuck Berry's "Johny B. Goode" one night and then perform "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath the following night.  We have also been fortunate enough to see Strings perform on his grandfather's "prison guitar" and hear the fascinating story behind its construction.

Lately, Strings and his bandmates have expanded their sound by adding more pedals to their sound. Be on the lookout for some Jerry Garcia "bubble gum" guitar sounds coming from a Strings performance near you.

DC Music Review feels lucky to  witnessed so many unforgettable performances by this increadibly talented artist over the years and know this list will continue to grow.

Please keep this page bookmarked as we will keep it updated with future performanced.

Album Review: Feeling Fruition’s New Album “Wild As The Night”

Perhaps fresh off a break-up isn't the mindset that someone should be in listening to Fruition's emotional new album Wild As The Night, but these aren't the type of things we always have control over.  Music, in my life, has always brought up emotions whether just under the surface or buried deep.  Happy, sad, hopeful or celebratory, the feelings that are envoked just by hearing a melody, voice or line in a song are something that a true music fan holds the most value in.

The opening song on the album, "Forget About You" already puts you on a train of thought about love, however you want to hold it.  The simple sound of the mandolin that Mimi Naja adds to the track is almost like the tiniest hope for love lost, and the words imply both sad reflection and strength to carry on through endings.

The overall sound of the album is one that if you close your eyes, you can see being played live as fans sway side to side immersed in their feelings of love and whatever that might mean to each person based on their own personal set of experiences with it.  I see couples brought closer as they revel in their still existent love, broken hearts remembering times from a past life and hopeful hearts remembering that it doesn't always have to be sad, nor should it be.  It's an album that should definitely be enjoyed the first time through with earphones in listening to every word that this amazing band somehow managed to make come together like star crossed lovers.

Fruition's music ability, live performance, energy and song writing has never been anything short of amazing.  There are definitely songs from the band in the past that I feel strongly reflect a deep sense of connection, like one of my all-time favorites "Santa Fe" and are able to showcase the capabilities of the band as a whole unit.   Now however, I don't think anyone can argue the pure beauty and electrifying energy that came out of this album is something that only a band that posseses such a clearly strong bond and magical dynamic could provide.

Halfway through the short seven track album that leaves us wanting more, the pace picks up again with "Raining in the City" as the blending of voices that Fruition has always had a knack for being able to execute flawlessly, comes to the forefront.  The way that the band is able to weave themselves together on an album and carry that through to the stage, no matter whether it's a late night festival set or solo show at a bar or music venue, is why they are able to consistently grow their fan base.

Wild as the Night is an album that is destined to provide the soundtrack to friends gathering, lovers embracing, and hearts healing. This album will have the ability to forever carry fans back to that exact emotional state.   Years down the road, when they listen to music from the earlier days of what promises to be a very long life for these five musicians, they'll be reminded of how well they've done it from the start.

Pop Sensation Kim Petras Brings Clarity to Silver Spring

Just five months after her sold out show in Silver Spring, German pop artist Kim Petras will be returning to The Fillmore next week for “The Clarity Tour”. Best known for her viral song “I Don’t Want It at All”, Petras has also gained popularity over the past few years for her Billboard-charting collaboration with Cheat Codes, “Feeling of Falling”.  On Wednesday November 20th, Petras will once again bring the party to Silver Spring with her upbeat danceable tracks and on stage theatrics. Not only has Petras embarked on two US tours this year, she has also released two full studio albums.

Click image to see full size image.

In late June, Petras released the much anticipated album Clarity, which features songs such as “Got My Number”, “Sweet Spot”, and “Personal Hell”. Throughout May and June, Petras released one song a week on social media to lead up to Clarity’s release. Just a few months later in October she released her Halloween-inspired album Turn Off the Light, a follow up to her EP from the previous year. “The Clarity Tour” is over halfway completed, and based on previous performances fans can expect a thrilling night of music with a setlist curated from both albums. The event is expected to sell out, so get your tickets below before it’s too late!

Billy Strings Greeted As Music Royalty At The 9:30 Cub

It's absolutely no surprise that the International Bluegrass Music Association's winner of the guitar player of the year award, would bring a crowd to Washington, DC, just as he has been doing with consistently sold out shows since the start of the Home tour.  The love that fans have for him in the Nations Capital was evident with the around the block line waiting to get in to see the musician do what he does best - hypnotize the crowd with incredible picking skills that are unlike any other.

Billy Strings performs at the 9:30 Club

Over the years, Billy has come to our area many a time.  A regular both at Delfest and a frequent opening act for Greensky Bluegrass when they come to town during their usual winter tour stop, the love runs deep for Strings and his music.  Saturday night he once again sealed the deal for bluegrass fans that jumped at the chance to get a ticket to be infected by the energy that he seems to never run out of on stage.  Year after year, you can see Billy perform 200 shows or more and each one he brings the A game and A squad with his touring band that consists  of Billy Failing (banjo), Royal Masat (upright bass) and Jarrod Walker (mandolin) who have proved to be the all-star team that Billy needs by his side.

As soon as he took the stage, the crowd was all in and ready for whatever was thrown their way.  The most impressive part of the show was not only Billy's ability to flip his hair around in circles while still picking his guitar at the speed of light, but the new bells and whistles that seem to have been recently added to all of the band members pedal boards.  Knowing their crowd, the trippy effects made for some incredible new sounds that were much more than you would normally get at a bluegrass show and were thoroughly enjoyed by ALL.

Billy Strings performs at the 9:30 Club

Always a known fan of the Grateful Dead, the band put an extra smile on faces in the crowd with a fiery version of "Deal" as well as what I personally had high hopes that we would get to hear but was only teased during "Pyramid Country" with "Shakedown Street".  In all honesty, I'm not entirely sure that the 9:30 Club would have been able to survive the overflow of happy hippy hearts had he actually played the song in its entirety, but I for one will be waiting until the day that I hear it played by him live so that I can dance until my feet fall off.

Billy Strings performs at the 9:30 Club

Excited to hear sounds off the newest album that was released back in September, he also included music from past albums like a true fan favorite "While I'm Waiting Here" from his 2017 album Turmoil and Tinfoil.  Being that even when there isn't a new album with new material, the band seems to always give us something new, fresh and exciting - be it just the foursome or via collaborations, it's an extra treat getting to hear them playnew songs like "Running" and "Must Be Seven" which only reiterated why he is selling out date after date on this tour.

Showing that Billy is one of those artists that you never get sick of seeing live, I saw fans who I had previously met at almost every other festival I saw Billy this summer - Delfest, Blue Ox and even last weeks Jeff Austin tribute What the Night Brings out in Denver.  Fans, including myself, follow him far and wide and he acknowledges and appreciates that, showing us just as much love as we show him.

Billy Strings performs at the 9:30 Club

Having no opener, Billy delivered two sets of incredible music and ended the second set with a mind-blowing collaboration in true jamgrass fashion lasting damn near fifteen minutes and showcasing the phenomenal skills of each member of the band.  Once that was over and the fellas came up for air and unplugged, despite having given it their all, the crowd wanted more.  A very short break from the stage was taken and then they were demanded right back with immediate roars.  They returned for what Billy promised to be a 'shit kicker' of an encore.  He delivered on that promise, without a doubt by covering one of the most recognized songs in Motown music with Tina Turners' "Proud Mary".  There wasn't a single person who wasn't absolutely thrilled with the choice and sang along with every word.

The band left the stage on fire and after the house lights came on, I got to witness something I never before have at a 9:30 Club show.  Whoever was in charge of the song that came on the speakers next, "U.S. Blues" by the Grateful Dead, I salute you sir, well played.  Concert goers didn't go anywhere but instead, shared with each other once last celebration of great music, dancing their way out the doors into the cold November night.  And they couldn't have been hippier about it, pun intended.

Joe Bonamassa Tears the Roof Off The Theater at MGM National Harbor

Blues-rock titan Joe Bonamassa didn't know if he was in DC, Virginia or Maryland when he performed at The Theater at MGM National Harbor on Saturday, November 9. He admitted to playing the "wrong fucking song" to the sold-out audience and apologized for losing his head for a few minutes. No apology was necessary. The guitar virtuoso let it all hang out for two hours, unveiling a rarely-seen display of guitar mastery that left fans in awe time after time.

Joe Bonamassa rocking his signature suit and sunglasses, wielding his '59 Gibson Les Paul guitar

Touring in support of his 2018 release, Redemption, Bonamassa began with a trio of high-energy tunes from the album - "Evil Mama," "Just Cause You Can" and "King Bee Shake Down" - and the show was on. Joe was fiery early, working the fretboard on his '59 Gibson Les Paul with ease; one of many of the rare and vintage guitars that would make an appearance on Saturday night.

Dressed in his trademark suit and sunglasses, Bonamassa fronted an incredibly talented band featuring Michael Rhodes (bass), Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and member of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Reese Wynans (piano/organ), Carl Lemar Carter (drums), Paulie Cerra (sax), Lee Thornburg (trumpet), and talented Australian backup singers Jade MacRae and Juanita Tippins Latukefu.

The beautiful Theatre at MGM National Harbor

Joe continued with a couple of tunes from his 2016 release, Blues of Desperation, including "This Train" that featured a Jethro Tull "Locomotive Breath" piano intro by Wynans as well as album's title track before digging deeper in his expansive catalog. "Sloe Gin," a Tim Curry cover, has been one of Joe's show stopping tracks for years and its live rendition has evolved and matured throughout his career. As Wynans delivered the opening notes on keys, a substantial applause trickled throughout the theatre. Augmented by amazing vocal harmonies from MacRae and Latukefu, the song slowly burned on as Joe lamented "I feel like I'm gonna die" before launching into the jaw-dropping guitar solo on his vintage Gibson Les Paul. Bonamassa coaxed sounds from his axe that would make any guitar player jealous, ripe with stunning tone, vibrato and phrasing.

The show rolled on with other notable highlights including a spectacular rendition of B.B. King's "Nobody Loves Me But My Mother" and a rollicking "Ballad of John Henry" that got the entire crowd on their feet for the remainder of the show. After a short encore break, Bonamassa returned to the stage solo with his acoustic in hand and delivered a dizzying demonstration of "Woke Up Dreaming" that had the crowd hooting and hollering. The band joined Joe for the final tune of evening, "Mountain Time," from his 2002 album, So It's Like That, and sent his fans - new and old - home with assurance that blues rock is in good hands with Bonamassa - one of the best guitarists in the world.

Joe and his band continue their fall tour tomorrow with a trio of shows in New York City at The Beacon Theatre before heading south to close out the run. We look forward to his DC-area return!

New Pornographers Rock a Sold-Out Crowd at the 9:30 Club

Made up of eight members and with many more instruments in tow, the New Pornographers packed the stage of the 9:30 Club on November 5 for a career-spanning set, and the first of two DC performances.

Often called an indie rock supergroup, it is easy to think of them as more of a music collective than a traditional band, and their output together is at times dwarfed by the efforts of individual members (see the solo career of Neko Case or the music projects of former member Dan Bejar, who recently left the group due to the demands of his other pursuits).

Lady Lamb performs at the 9:30 Club

Lady Lamb

But following an opening set of pop-rock offered up by Lady Lamb, all of the aforementioned considerations were swept aside.  Led by front man/guitarist Carl Newman and Case’s vocal performance, the band offered up 23 songs to the sold-crowd.

The set began with “Falling Down the Stairs of Your Smile,” a track that had all members abilities on full display – drummer Joe Seiders and bassist John Collins provided the rhythm over which keyboardists Kathryn Calder and Blaine Thurier, along with lead guitarist Todd Fancey, played over throughout the evening.

The rest of the set required various members to mix up the instrumentation – vocalist Simi Stone (who was recently bumped up from touring member to full bandmate), kept things interesting by breaking out a violin.

Between songs, Newman and Case addressed the audience, telling stories of previous experiences playing at the 9:30 Club, as well as other banter that contributed to a casual air between the audience and performers.  Acknowledging that the band was playing the Lincoln Theater the following night, Newman announced, “Here’s one you won’t hear tomorrow,” as the band launched into another song.

After a set full of fan favorites such as “Sing Me Spanish Techno,” “Whiteout Conditions,” and “Champions of Red Wine,” the band closed out their set with “The Bleeding Heart Show” before a three-song encore that concluded with “Mass Romantic.”  The set was sure to leave any indie rock fan satisfied, yet eager for their appearance the following evening.

The Last Waltz 40th Anniversary Tour Hits MGM National Harbor on Thursday

The Last Waltz 2019 Tour: A Celebration of The Band’s Historic Farewell Concert features an absolutely stacked lineup of all-star musicians and makes its highly anticipated stop at The Theater at MGM National Harbor this Thursday, November 14.

The Last Waltz concert at MGM National Harbor in 2016.

Robbie Robertson, Sebastian Robertson, and Keith Wortman of Blackbird Presents are thrilled to announce the return of the highly acclaimed, epic tour that captures the excitement of The Band’s historic 1976 Thanksgiving concert at the famed Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco hailed as one of the greatest rock concerts of all time.

The musicians include  GRAMMY® Award-winning guitar legend and vocalist Warren Haynes and GRAMMY® Award-winning producer/musician Don Was, with Jamey Johnson, Lukas Nelson, John Medeski, Terence Higgins, and Mark Mullins & The Levee Horns featuring the original horn arrangements of Allen Toussaint. Very special guests Cyril Neville (The Neville Brothers), Dave Malone (The Radiators), and Bob Margolin (Longtime Muddy Waters guitarist who performed with Waters and The Band in the original Last Waltz) will be featured throughout the tour.

Over forty years ago, The Band performed their final concert to a sold-out crowd with a whos-who of Rock’N Roll royalty in attendance. “As far as farewells go, this one was major,” stated Rolling Stone Magazine in 2016 expose about the famed concert. The evening culminated with “Don’t Do It,” The Band’s cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Baby Don’t You Do It.” After the last note, Robbie Robertson, The Bands’ lead guitarist, songwriter and a founding member, said “Goodnight. Goodbye.” walking off stage, forever immortalizing this epic event.

“It is such an honor that the musical celebration of The Last Waltz and The Band carries on today. Blackbird Presents and this extraordinary lineup of talent makes me proud to be a part of this ongoing and wonderful tradition.” Says Robbie Robertson.

The Last Waltz Tour: A Celebration of The Band’s Historic Farewell Concert is an extension of Blackbird Present’s acclaimed 2016 two-night, sold-out concert event The Last Waltz New Orleans and 2017’s The Last Waltz 40th Anniversary Tour which was praised by audiences and critics across the country. “You soon knew that The Band’s legacy would be well feted. Earplugs were required — for the crowd, not the band,” wrote the Huffington Post in its review of the show at the Orpheum in Boston, Massachusetts. “The last 30 minutes of The Last Waltz at SaengerNOLA was the best thing I’ve heard at Jazzfest,” said Keith Spera, music critic, The New Orleans Advocate.

“We are excited to be working closely with Robbie, Warren, Don and our incredible lineup of musicians and special guests on the latest incarnation of The Last Waltz Tour.” Says Keith Wortman, “This year’s tour will introduce fans to some very special never-heard-before arrangements of the classic hits from that Thanksgiving night in 1976.”
