The Killers Perform At The Anthem

Article Written by Guest Contributor:  Fernando J. Delgado

The Killers brought their epic brand of soaring rock last week in Washington, DC, playing to an ecstatic capacity crowd at The Anthem on January 10th. Mixing their massive radio hits from the last decade along with new material, the band delivered a transcendent performance and left the audience of over 6,000 raving.

The Killers Perform at The Anthem

The Killers are one of the finest live bands in the world, powered by anthemic songs and one of the most charismatic frontmen in rock and roll, Brandon Flowers. The band’s reputation was reflected in the long line which formed at the venue before the show. The Anthem, despite being a new concert hall which opened in October of last year, has already hosted several sold out shows. But this particular sold out show was on a different level. On a cold January Wednesday night - with the frozen water of the adjacent harbor still visibly thawing out from the recent bomb cyclone - the excitement of the fans was palpable. Hundreds of ticket-holders braved the chilly conditions and showed up hours early, forming a line that snaked all the way back and around the perimeter of the District Pier in front of the venue a full hour before doors even opened. People in line could be heard conversing, sharing their excitement for seeing the band play. For some, it was their third or fourth time seeing the band. For others, it was their very first time experiencing the Killers live. But no matter their previous show-going history with the band, everyone was united in their sheer enthusiasm and anticipation for the night’s concert. The Killers did not disappoint any of them.

The band took the stage at 9:15pm and kicked off the night with “Run For Cover” and “The Man”, two energetic tracks from their new album Wonderful, Wonderful. The opening song, which greeted the crowd with the quick rhythmic strumming of guitar chords from touring guitarist Ted Sablay, is perhaps the most traditional Killers-sounding track from the band’s fifth studio LP. Featuring synths and guitar tones reminiscent of New Order and a big chorus in the spirit of Bruce Springsteen, “Run For Cover” is an urgent rocker with timely, politically-inspired lyrics (“He got a smile, he’s fake news” / “Just run for cover, you’ve got nothing left to lose”) and a personal narrative that suggests that perseverance in the face of difficulty isn’t always possible.

As is always the case with a Killers live show, the band’s performance was defined by the showmanship of the convivial and charming Flowers. Moving confidently from one side of the stage to another, he captivated the audience throughout the night. “We’re brought to you from fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada,” said Flowers to the cheering crowd before quoting the Vegas daredevil Evil Knievel and subsequently starting the power ballad “The Way It Was.” Engaging the audience with a call-and-response singalong in the middle of the song, Flowers led the way to a rousing finish before transitioning to Hot Fuss lead track and fan favorite “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine.” The song’s punchy and urgent bass lines - expertly played by touring bassist Jake Blanton - propelled the start of the tune, while 80’s-style synths, frenetic but skilled drumming, and dazzling green lasers brought it to an epic conclusion.

If Flowers is the driver of the Killers lamborghini, then drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. is certainly the engine that makes the band go. Pounding the drum kit with his thundering tom rolls and rapid-fire snare hits throughout the 20-song setlist, Vanucci further elevated the energy of both the band and the already enthusiastic audience. Even though he kept up his powerful, unique drumming - he never quite plays the same fill twice on a given song from one show to the next - throughout the duration of the night, his massive chops were most evident in numbers like “Somebody Told Me,” “Spaceman,” “Runaways,” and of course the songs which are The Killers biggest hits - “All These Things That I’ve Done,” “When You Were Young” and “Mr. Brightside.”

Even though this tour has the Killers in support of their new album, the band chose to evenly visit material from throughout their 17-year career. Four songs from Wonderful, Wonderful (including “Rut” in the middle of the set and a bombastic “The Calling” as the first song of the encore) were included in the setlist, each of them fitting in well with the more classic fare. Hot Fuss, the landmark debut album which helped define the post-rock landscape of the early 2000’s, was the most well-represented album during the night, with each of its six songs eliciting a rave response from the crowd.

Staying true to their Las Vegas show roots, the band saved the best for last in both their main set and the encore, bringing the house down with singalongs of some of the mega-hits in their catalogue. “Read My Mind,” the mid-tempo love song from the sophomore album Sam’s Town, had the crowd swaying and turning to their friends and reciting the lyrics. Then one of the top highlights of the show - “All These Things That I’ve Done” - closed the main set. Backed by lovely gospel singers, Flowers led the Anthem crowd in the biggest singalong of the night, as the entire audience belted out “I’ve got soul, but I’m not a soldier” to Sablay’s palm-muted distorted, rhythmic guitar strumming in the song’s bridge before Vannucci brought back his drums into high gear in perfect time with a blast of confetti and streamers. The confetti poured down from The Anthem rafters and turned the venue into the biggest party on the East Coast.

After a brief break which allowed Flowers to change into an ostentatious gold Elvis-style suit, The Killers returned for an encore which brought the evening to a thrilling conclusion. Following “The Calling” and Hot Fussdeep track “Andy, You’re A Star,” the band sent the crowd’s energy soaring with the opening flourish and piercing guitar lick of “When You Were Young.” Yet again, Flowers had thousands of people singing along to the lyrics during the bridge, this time only accompanied by a synth - “You know the devil’s water it ain’t so sweet / You don’t have to drink right now / But you can dip your feet / Every once in a little while” - before the rest of the band re-joined ahead of a wailing guitar solo and another well-timed blast of confetti and strobing lights, Flowers belting out notes over top of it all. The soaring vocals and accompanying melodies gave this concert-goer goosebumps.

As if that weren’t enough, the band somehow raised the energy level yet again with a powerful performance of “Mr. Brightside” to end the night. The familiar opening arpeggio guitar riff from one of the biggest radio hits from the past 20 years drew even more celebratory cheers from the delighted audience. It’s truly rare to come across moments where thousands of people can share pure enjoyment with other complete strangers, bonding over a song which was released almost 15 years ago. But such is the power of music, and that is part of the appeal of The Killers. As Vannucci rolled his toms and snares and crashed his cymbals as part of the final song’s outro, Flowers thanked the crowd and a fantastic night came to and end. Fittingly, one of America’s best bands came to The Anthem and played anthems of their own.

Relive DC’s Weekend with The Disco Biscuits and TAUK [FULL Audio, Photo, Video]

The Disco Biscuits and TAUK brought a stunning audio-visual display to The Anthem on Saturday, January 13. This weekend marked the first time we've seen an act perform back-to-back shows at the 9:30 Club and The Anthem, and the reviews seem unanimously positive. Night one felt special, with Marc Brownstein telling the crowd, "Our favorite thing about these two night shows is that we know everybody here tonight is gonna be with us tomorrow night. We love that." Then you enter The Anthem on Saturday night and it immediately feels epic. We're really looking forward to more two-night runs of this variety.

The Anthem also provided an exceptional canvass for the Disco Biscuits patented laser shows, creating a mesmerizing and exciting display, with hardly a bad view in the building. Enjoy audio recording of The Disco Biscuits and TUAK recorded by our collaborator Will Urquhart, photos by Josh Brick of Josh Brick Graphics, and you can watch the recording of the free livestream courtesy of the band. (Soundboard recordings of both nights of tDB are available via nugs.net: Friday, Saturday)

Antibalas Sets The Hamilton Afire With An Infectious Two Nights Of Dancing [UPDATED]

Updated January 22, 2018:  Audio recordings for both nights have now been placed in article.

Antibalas At The Hamilton

Antibalas, a 12-piece Afrobeat funk band, geared up for their encore performance of a two night run at The Hamilton on January 12, 2018. The diverse, smartly dressed crowd buzzed in anticipation as they waited for the Brooklyn based band to take the stage. By the end of the opening act — a rousing performance by local band DC Highlife Stars — a crowd had formed at the base of the stage, creating a tightly knit budding dance party. Every seat and bar stool were occupied, with the general admission pit spanning the entire length of the stage, brimming to capacity.

Despite the unseasonably balmy January weather, walking into The Hamilton on Friday, January 12th,  was like a cool escape into an early 20th century speakeasy. Craft beers, perfumes, and choice dishes wafted through the air amid excited chatter.

When Antibalas piled out onto the wide stage, they were met with a deafening cry, as frontman and percussionist, Duke Amayo welcomed the crowd with open arms, bellowing, “DC!”

“Nyash” kicked off the evening with numerous, if not all of the instruments blaring simultaneously. Horns, bass, percussion — all the members of the band played big, with instruments both complimenting and challenging one another. Immediately, the dance pit in front of the stage was a sea of movement. There wasn’t a still person in the venue, with even those lurking by the back bar unconsciously bopping along.

From the very first notes, it was clear that the band was ready to put their all into this second night’s performance. Martin Perna, bandleader, baritone saxophonist, and band founder ended the opening track by pulling out a towel to catch the beads of sweat that had formed on his brow.

The following song — “The Ratcatcher” — began without pause from the former. Throughout the evening’s performance, it was difficult to tell when one song ended and another began, so the entire show felt like one big cohesive jam, which lended to a massively fun time. As two girls passed me in search of their friend, I overheard one say, “Alright ladies, see you on the dance floor.” The venue was no longer a restaurant, or even a place to cozy up in the corner and enjoy an intimate night together. It was a party — for everyone in attendance. Amayo had a constant grin on his face, looking like he was having the time of his life.

And even though it was the band’s second night at the Hamilton, they were just as eager and put their all into the encore performance. Antibalas are wildly talented, with each member having multiple areas of expertise, as well as incorporating instruments I’d never even seen or heard before. For instance, one member went from playing the flute to the quijada (better known as a donkey jawbone), and back to the flute again. Utilizing the shekere, a West African percussion instrument, as well as the quijada, Antibalas has established a unique and truly special sound. Although all playing wildly different, and sometimes perhaps opposing instruments, the 12-piece band played as one cohesive unit, creating one powerful sound as they balanced and complimented each other’s sounds and rhythms.

The bar area emptied out as the setlist progressed as the concert goers traded their bar stools for the dance floor. Infectious energetic Afrobeats and stairs (in heels) are a dangerous combination. We watched many a person nearly lose their balance on the stairs while attempting to carry their drinks, navigate the stairs, and dance in beat to an unending high energy songs. No matter how many small portions of alcohol were accidentally spilled in a sacrifice to the rhythm or how many last minute clutches to a pole or handrail were made, nothing could put a damper on the exuberant vibes in the Hamilton on Friday night.

This evenings's performance concluded with a grateful speech by band founder Martin Perna who who said, "Twenty years ago this was my dream and for 20 years this was my reality.  We will be here for 20 more. We still have more tricks up our sleeves... even though we do not have sleeves.” (Editor Note: The band's outfits were all sleeveless.  See the photo gallery below for photographs of the band and their outfits. )

Better Off Dead Plays Into The Wee Hours at Gypsy Sally’s

Better Off Dead at Gypsy Sally's

Better Off Dead played their first show of 2018 to a packed Gypsy Sally's on Saturday, January 13th 2018. Better Off Dead has a strong following throughout the DMV region and are always well received by a legion of devoted fans. Tonight was no exception as they performed to a packed venue that danced the night away.

This performance had an odd dynamic as fans came in waves to the performance. This show had the unique confluence of audiences, serving both a main act and as an after party for the DC music scene. Devoted fans showed up early while other fans came after TAUK and The Disco Biscuits finished their performances at The Anthem.

No matter what time an audience member showed up they danced well into the evening as the performance went well past 1:00 AM. You can listen to audio of the entire show at their website.

John Kadlecik

John Kadlecik (or John K as he is more affectionately referred to by his fans) co-founded Dark Star Orchestra in 1997.  In August 2009, John K left Dark Star Orchestra to join Furthur with Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh.  In 2014, Furthur disbanded.

When John Kadlecik was with Dark Star Orchestra they recreated historic Grateful Dead performances song-by-song.  Now on his own, John Kadlecik primarily recreates historical performances of Jerry Garcia Band (JGB) performances song-by-song. Kadlecik performs JGB originals and JGB covers such  "The Harder They Come" by Jimmy Cliff, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by The Band, "Dear Prudence" by The Beatles amonh others.  For his JGB recreation performances, Kadlecik does not tell the audience what historic show is being performed and will ask the audience to guess the performance after the set completes.  Despite the pension for JGB songs, Kadlecik still belts out stunning Grateful Dead songs while traveling with his nationally touring John Kadlecik Band.

John Kadlecik lives in the Washington DC Metro Area and is a proud resident of the DMV. He has been spoiling fans in and around the District, Maryland, and Virginia since at least 2014 with his frequent Thanksgiving, Year-End, and residency performances.  Since 2015, Kadlecik uses a portion of the first night of his Thanksgiving Turkey Run to raise money for a Washington Metro Area charitable organization.

DC Music Review cannot thank John Kadlecik enough for being part of the DMV music family and how he spoils us so much with his frequent appearances.

The Disco Biscuits Bring Fiery Night One Performance to the 9:30 Club [Audio]

The Disco Biscuits opened night one their two-night run of shows at the 9:30 Club and then The Anthem. The crew came out the gates swinging with an impressive run of uninterrupted music for over an hour to start the night. This is the first time we are getting to see an act perform at the two venues back-to-back. Marc Brownstein commented to the crowd, "Our favorite thing about these two night shows is that we know everybody here tonight is gonna be with us tomorrow night. We love that." And he meant it. In order to attend the 9:30 Club showing, fans had to purchase a two night pass for that show and the following night at the much larger venue on The Wharf.  Tonight, they'll be joined by TAUK, who will open the show.

We were on scene last night, and you can hear a sample of our recording below.

Leftover Salmon is a bluegrass jam band from Boulder, Colorado.  They have a unique blend of influences including bluegrass, rock, and cajun/zydeco.

The DMV is very fortunate to have them come to this region as often as they do.  In 2017 they helped christen the Chrysalis Amphitheater in Symphony Woods right aside Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, Maryland.  2017 also saw them make three stops in during their acoustic living room tour (we were fortunate enough to see their Gypsy Sally's and Rams Head On Stage appearances but missed their Broadberry performance).
