Greensky Bluegrass Set To Perform At The Maymont In Richmond, Virginia, On July 20th, 2023

Greensky Bluegrass has been on a whirlwind globetrotting roll for the past few months. Earlier this year, the quintet headed to Australia and then over to Reykjavik, Iceland for the first edition of Camp Greensky Iceland.  The band is now
firmly back in the United States and has been touring extensively across the country as of late.

For two decades now, Greensky Bluegrass has built an empire - brick by brick and fiery performance after performance. This quintet is no stranger to the DMV, as they have graced us with countless performances across our region.

Next week on July 20th, Greensky Bluegrass, consisting of Anders Beck [dobro], Michael Bont [banjo], Dave Bruzza [guitar], Mike Devol [upright bass], and Paul Hoffman [Mandolin], will appear in Richmond, Virginia, at the picturesque Maymont. While many of us wish we had seen the wildly successful Camp Greensky Iceland (although we know more than a few DMV Campers who made the pilgrimage), this is now your opportunity to see this beloved band in a picturesque venue in the DMV and just a short drive from DC.

Maymont is a 100-acre historic estate and park in Richmond, Virginia. What better way to spend an evening than to stroll through the gardens and arboretum, see native wildlife habitats, feed friendly goats, explore The Robins Nature Center, visit the Mansion, and then see some incredible music in the estate?

We couldn't imagine a more picturesque setting to see our fellow Campers.  We hope to see everyone in Richmond next week.

Trey Anastasio Band Blazes On at Baltimore’s Pier Six Pavilion

The summer air was thick with anticipation and humidity as fans eagerly gathered at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore, MD, on Thursday, July 6th, for a night of musical enchantment with the legendary Trey Anastasio Band. The atmosphere was electric with a shared love for the captivating sounds of this iconic jam band and its leader, Trey Anastasio—best known for his virtuosic guitar work in Phish.

The evening started with a powerful rendition of "Everything's Right," instantly setting the tone for an evening filled with soulful melodies and improvisational prowess. The crowd cheered as Trey Anastasio's intricate guitar work took center stage. At the same time, Jennifer Hartswick, the band's exceptional trumpet player and powerhouse vocalist, added layers of musical brilliance with her soulful and vibrant performances.

Cyro Baptista

Backed by the mesmerizing percussion work of Cyro Baptista, the band's rhythms took on a whole new dimension. Baptista's masterful command of various and unique percussion instruments—including scuba diving fins during "Camel Walk"—added layers of texture and depth to each song, providing a mesmerizing backdrop for the band's improvisational explorations. Later in the set, the crowd couldn't help but be captivated by Natalie Cressman's dynamic stage presence as she led an incredible call and response jam with Trey during "Blaze On."

Ray Paczkowski

A highlight of the first set came with the closing song, "Sand," during which Trey traded funk-laden guitar riffs with the band's horn section and Ray Paczkowski, the band's keyboard player. The chemistry between the band members was palpable as they effortlessly communicated and responded to each other's musical cues.

After a brief intermission, the second set began with a captivating performance of "A Wave of Hope." The band seamlessly transitioned into "Cayman Review" and "Undermind," with Hartswick's trumpet adding a fiery edge to the band's already electrifying sound. "Sweet Dreams Melinda" offered a poignant and introspective moment, with Anastasio's heartfelt vocals beautifully complemented by Hartswick and Cressman's rich harmonies. The audience was spellbound as the three musicians shared the stage, their voices blending perfectly.

The second set climaxed with "Push On 'Til the Day," featuring blistering guitar solos from Anastasio and explosive percussion work from Baptista. The band's energy was infectious, and the crowd begged for more as the band exited the stage.

Natalie Cressman

For the encore, the band gifted the crowd with an emotional and soul-stirring cover of the 1970s hit "O-o-h Child," with James Casey's soaring vocals taking center stage. Casey, the band's saxophone player and a DC-native, sat out most of the show, joining the band only for the encore.  After a stage 4 colorectal cancer diagnosis in 2021, James has continued to tour intermittently while undergoing treatment.  With this in mind and the encore's uplifting lyrics, the entire venue sang along, united in a moment of pure musical joy supporting James' on-going battle with cancer.

Natalie Cressman

Overall, the Trey Anastasio Band's performance at Pier Six Pavilion was a masterclass in musical expression and improvisation. From Trey Anastasio's captivating guitar wizardry to Jennifer Hartswick's mesmerizing trumpet playing and soulful vocals to Dezon Douglas' thundering bass lines, each band member showcased their immense talent and passion for their craft.

Together, they created an unforgettable evening of music that left the audience longing for more.   We look forward to Trey Anastasio and each member of his band coming to the DMV again soon

DMV Scores a Re:SET During Traveling Festival

The Re:SET Concert Series is taking the U.S. by storm with its boundless lineup. For the first year of its existence, the traveling festival brings a tidal wave of genres, ranging from intimate indie to stage-shaking EDM and everything in between.

The new outdoor concert series crafted by AEG Presents serves to give artists and fans a unique experience of a relaxed festival that can be caught in multiple places.

Headlining the festival were Boygenius, Steve Lacy, and LCD Soundsystem, who each curated the lineup for their performance day.

Spanning across the month of June, Re:SET made its appearance in 12 cities across four regions. On the weekend of June 16, the festival made its debut in Maryland at Merriweather Post Pavillion. Accurately labeled as the “DMV”, attendees from the area and beyond gathered to share the weekend of a lifetime.

Read our recap of the DMV’s Re:SET weekend below!

Friday:

Kicking off the weekend, Bartees Strange emitted an infectious vibe, playing soothing guitar rifts and enchanting ears with his vocals. With his bubbly stage presence, Strange ignited the perfect temperature of hype that set the stage for the rest of the performers.

Baltimore musician and singer, Dijon, amplified Strange’s melodic vibe, subduing listeners' ears with his charming voice. Kicking off his 55-minute set, Dijon roused the crowd with opening hit, Big Mike’s. Dijon and the band seemed to be enjoying themselves as they jammed out live. During each song, Dijon’s emotion shone brightly through his eyes that peered through the crowd.

Dijon played a whopping carousel of hits including Many Times, Talk Down, and coogie. Fans rocked from side to side, even closing their eyes to feel the depths of his voice. The most powerful track wrenching hearts seemed to be the closer Rodeo Clown, as Dijon gripped the mike and directly locked eyes with listeners.

Roughly 45 minutes later Clairo appeared on stage, with fans erupting in howls as they began with Bambi. The hour-long set included a plethora of instruments, including multiple guitarists, a pianist, and even a saxophone player who held extensive notes. Lead singer Claire Elizabeth Cottrill even shouted out her familiarity with the venue.

Fans perused through the band’s most recent studio-recorded album Sling, giving rise to features of Zinnias, Blouse, and Amoeba amongst others. The visuals of colorful abstract drawings paired perfectly with the dream-like state Clairo reshaped the venue into. In between the art, black and white visuals of the band engulfed screens, transporting the audience back in time.

“We have a few more songs and then it's time for the boys,”  Cottrill laughed. The audience’s gaping smiles illuminated the venue while they sat in silence, waiting for the next track. Clairo played another two tracks from Sling, Harbor and Patridge.

Concluding with popular hit Bags, audience members recited every lyric while cherishing their last few minutes. The overall aura of Clairo connected with fans in a profoundly deep manner while still kindling excitement, much like what was to follow.

Friday appeared to be the most packed day, with fan girls’ mouths watering at the thought of seeing Boygenius live. Die-hards gathered in circles, displaying their old and newly bought headlining merch which was held in its own tent. Listeners squealed with delight once the lights dimmed and the audience prepared for Boygenius’ entrance

However, right before playing, an indigenous woman from the Piscataway native group, Julie Tayac Yakes, gave a speech about the history of her people and the venue’s land. Yakes emphasized the importance of recognizing where ingenious land lies and preserving it from harmful human tendencies.

A few minutes later Thin Lizzy’s The Boys Are Back In Town signaled the onset of Boygenius’ set. Throughout the entire night, cries of each singer’s name illuminated the venue as the three-piece band hailed from the stage. Although having only released one album and EP, Boygenius played a heft 18 tracks during their hour-and-a-half set.

They managed to showcase their entire discography as a band, playing every track from the record and boygenius, leaving no stone unturned. In the beginning of their performance, Phoebe Bridgers thanked guest speaker Julie for welcoming the crowd to the territory. Multiple cries of “I love you Phoebe” overtook brief moments of silence.

Before wrapping up, the three singers embraced in an enormous group hug on stage, even falling down into a dog pile. Fans hurled multiple lesbian pride flags onto the stage, with Lucy Daucus plucking one and wrapping one around her shoulders. The three teased an exit just to waltz back on stage and wrap up with three songs. Though performing an undeniably satisfying set, fans still itched for more.

Saturday:

At 5:15 sharp, singer, songwriter, and guitarist Fousheé appeared on stage with two fun house mirrors, a few instruments, and vigor. Starting with scream my name while playing the cowbell with a drumstick, she flexed her undeniable magnetism. Fans devoured every second of her performance, even screaming while she drank water.

Fousheé showcased many talents, serenading the crowd with her guitar during sing about love and unleashing her inner rock star with stupid bitch. She even surprised fans with an unexpected cover of Frankie Valli’s Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. While singing closing hit spend the money, she danced with a fan-passed pink cowboy hat atop her head.

Up next was Toro y Moi, who opened with Mirage, embarking on a similar melodic tone where Fousheé left off. Each band member marvelously grooved with their instrument, emitting synthesized melodies and not a single drum note.

“Ready for a good night? You’re in for a treat,” said lead singer Chaz Bear. The audience's bodies swayed like the wind as TYM shifted from So Many Details to The Loop to Rose Quartz. On the screen, psychedelic visuals shifted through an array of symbols of colors, perfectly aligning with the mood of each song.

Listeners bounced endlessly to the beat once his beaming hit with Flume, The Difference, fizzled through speakers. Throughout almost the entire set, Bear’s smile radiated brightly on projection screens as he poured his heart out through the music.

Before shifting into intimate Girl Like You, Bear yelled, “Say oh oh oh” before laughing and saying “Nevermind, I tricked you”, realizing he mixed up the setlist. Once the song wrapped up, Bear, on cue, said “Oh oh oh” seamlessly shifting into Freelance before closing out.

After the break, fans grew increasingly enthralled when James Blake and band appeared behind the stage’s black curtains. Started off gently, Blake played keyboard as Life Round Here slowly built up electricity as white lights twinkled overhead. From new to old hits, Blake played an assortment of hits, from 2010’s CMYK to 2021’s Coming Back featuring SZA.

Blake pulled fans on an emotional journey, playing heart-wrenching hits like Say What You Will and I Hope She’ll Be Happier to intoxicating bangers like Mile High. Halfway through the set, the pink cowboy hat made its second appearance of the day as Blake plucked it from the crowd and signed it.

Audience members in the pit screamed for Blake to play Hummingbird to which he eventually obliged, but not without mentioning its feature in the new movie, Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse, a staple moment in his career.

Saturday night’s energy was described as “palpable” by Blake, with the singer mentioning he was “fucking bursting” with emotion from the venue aura. Ending with his cover of Frank Ocean’s Godspeed and then Retrograde, a surge of standing ovations erupted.

Soon the nail-biting moment of Steve Lacy’s grand entrance arrived, with die-hards frying their vocal boxes with screams. Lacy’s colossal fan base brought profuse elation, leaving room for barely an ounce of silence the entire hour and 30-minute set. After playing Hate CD, fans ceaselessly cheered to the point where Lacy said, “Can y’all be quiet?”

Finally, when the hyped died down a smidge, Infrunami graced ears and the venue collectively chanted the chorus. During the lengthy set, Lacy unleashed countless hits including Mercury, Some, and C U Girl. In between songs, Lacy evoked rounds of laughter with his blunt remarks, even embarking on a two-minute-long speech about masturbation after playing Static. Yet, earlier Lacy shared a sentimental moment with the audience, speaking on his appreciation for people listening to his art encompassing his “tortured” experiences and emotions.

Toward the end of the night, a second surprise appearance from Fousheé occured as the two shared the stage for a performance of Sunshine. Before wrapping up, Lacy of course sang viral single Bad Habit, before requesting the pink cowboy hat to make its third stage appearance and receive its second signature. Closing the set of a lifetime, he played thrashing hit Dark Red before kicking over the microphone stand to exit like a true rockstar.

Sunday:

The final day of the festival proved to be the most musically diverse of the three, with a plethora of sounds sewn up perfectly into four sets. Playing for 40 minutes, L’Rain enchanted the crowd with her soothing voice, guitar rifts, and a wide array of instruments touched by the band. Ripples of emotion flooded the grounds as each emotion-heavy song caressed ears.

A 360 vibe shift occurred when Idles slammed the stage, keeping fans on their toes from their opening gut-punching Colossus to their fiery closer Rottweiler. By the second song, guitarists Lee Kiernan hopped into the pit evoking an uproar from the crowd. With the onset of each song, the crowd grew increasingly ferocious, igniting the first and only mosh pit of the weekend.

Halfway through their set, a fan tossed their sunglasses onstage to lead singer, Joe Talbot, who promptly put them on for a few minutes before trading the fan a band t-shirt. Before the onset of Mother, Talbot dedicated the single to the fathers and mothers who “hold it down”, spotlighting Sunday’s performance on Father’s Day.

The set’s hype reached a record high once Never Fight A Man With A Perm exploded through the speakers. The pit formed a hole which Talbot parted into two. At the cross of his hands, the two walls of people pummeled into one another stirring up a new wave of chaos.

As the hour-long set inched to a close, Talbot dedicated the second to last song Danny Nedlko “to the hard work and bravery of the immigrants that make our country and yours a better place”, affirming the song’s origination. Midway through, the song guitarist Mark Bowen stood atop the crowd yelling his lyrical verse, shortly followed by him crowd surfing while singing.

After another 45 minutes of waiting, the third set prompted another vibe shift as Jamie XX seamlessly altered the venue into a nightclub, though the sun still peered through the sky. Coming in steaming, Jamie promptly began with a version of I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times) then ceaselessly transitioned into every additional song.

The entire hour set was hand-mixed live with the crowd scarfing down Jamie’s energy and regurgitating it in the form of dance moves. Inside his vast arsenal of hits, classics like Kill Dem, Gosh, LET’S DO IT AGAIN, and Idontknow poured from house speakers. With live dancers directing the screen’s visuals, a dazzling disco ball, and zero words, Jamie brought an authentic bass-shaking aura to the festival’s lineup.

The onset of escalation reached its peak once headliner LCD Soundsystem graced the stage, starting five minutes early and finishing ten minutes late. Opening with Get Innocuous! the sea of listeners stood in an uproar of cheer for the moment they had anticipated all night.

As usual, the band brought a vast set of band equipment, comprised of at least three drum sets, four keyboards, and multiple synthesizers. Moving swiftly from song the song, LCD played a wide array of hits including You Wanted a Hit, Tribulations, Us Vs Them, and Tonite.

Lead singer James Murphy made it a point to shout out each band on the line up even saying “If you got here late, you kind of f*cked up”. Bringing passion, soul-stirring rhythms, and cosmic emotion, LCD electrified listeners with an unforgettable performance.

Scouring from the highs of Daft Punk Is Playing at My House to the intimate New York I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down, die-hard fans hurled every lyric back to the stage. The two closing tunes of Dance Yrself Clean and All My Friends evoked intense screams and flailing limbs, leaving fans thirsting for more after their final bow.

DelFest Soars Like Never Before And Launches A Spectacular 2023 Festival Season

Another trip through the Cumberland Gap to the promised land we call the Allegany County Fairgrounds was the way of many a DelFest fan this past holiday weekend and year 15 offered something many don’t remember happening ever before – nothing but sunshine!  While Mother Nature usually offers up at least one downpour at some point throughout the weekend, 2023 was different and attendees were overjoyed to pile on the SPF for four days straight!

The Del McCoury Band soundcheck at DelFest 2023

It kicked off as it always does with the Del McCoury Band sound check Thursday and as folks flowed into town and set up camps they would call home for the weekend, excitement bounced from mountains to field and back again. Anticipation of musical magic was palpable as attendees arrived and were greeted by welcoming staff and familiar faces as far as the eye could see.  The thing that people love most and you could hear mentioned over and over again in conversation, is that once you are here, you are family and that is what keeps people coming back year after year.

With three stages and lots of hard decisions to be made music-wise, there is never a shortage of opportunities to see a long-time favorite perform or to discover a new band or artist that you might not have seen before.  Collaborations and shared stages are another addition to the rolodex of memories that undoubtedly come with each year of the festival.  2023 alone had Lindsey Lou, Ronnie McCoury, Del himself and The California Honeydrops as repeat offenders in that category, just to name a few.  Secret riverside sets were rumored to be happening night after night, and if you were among the lucky few that were able to seek and find them, the intimacy alone could give you goosebumps.

Strong women were a staple at this years festival as well with Sierra Ferrell casting a spell that just about everyone fell under for both her Potomac Stage and Grandstand sets.   The select few that were able to find or happened to fall upon the riverside set, lasting late into the night, were among the truly blessed as it is clear this young woman is a rising star that will continue to shine very, very bright.  Rising Appalachia was simply mesmerizing Sunday as their melodic chants and rhythmic beats seemed to shake the ground and thump into everyone’s existence, carving out a place to stay for a lengthy future.  Molly Tuttle is an addition that has been gracing the lineups of festival after festival the past few years and this year DELighted us with another reason to love her.  Even better, the Delfest family is growing in more ways than one, literally, and brother Sullivan Tuttle was also gracing the Potomac and Grandstand stages alongside his band, AJ Lee and the Summit, to share even more of the love.

Speaking of family love, if we were to speak like Yoda for just a second, we would say, "There is another McCoury!"  Last year Ronnie McCoury's son, Heaven McCoury, loomed comfortably in the shadows of DelFest.  In 2023, this powerhouse and versatile guitarist graced all three stages and came to the forefront on many occasions to show off his guitar skills.   We certainly look forward to seeing Heaven McCoury continue to grow and blossom in the future and DELight fans at DelFest and beyond!

Lindsey Lou, known for her powerhouse ability to command a stage, not only rocked out during her own sets but also continued to step foot onstage with others, including her former tour mates, the Kitchen Dwellers.  A true highlight of the festival that is sure to be mentioned for years to come will be Friday when she came out with Cris Jacobs and paid tribute to none other than recently departed Tina Turner with a church-worthy cover of “What’s Love Got To Do With It” that you could hear echo off the mountains like the praise that was undeniably deserved for a musician who meant so much to so many.

Of course, as any DelFest pro could tell you, the late nights are never to be missed, and this year was no different.  The weekend both kicked off and ended with some amazing Grateful Dead tributes, first with the Keller Williams Grateful Grass set and then wrapping up Sundays as they always do with double Travelin McCoureys who always pay homage to the band they love so well and make us all feel the love far and wide.  Kitchen Dwellers, Cris Jacobs and California Honeydrops also got their late-night credits added to the list of reasons to love them as the music hall packed the folks who never wanted to stop the party from wall to wall.

While we love talking about some of the superstars and music legends that grace the stages at DelFest, we also know that DelFest is where you will find future superstars.  DelFest has a knack for finding emerging talent that propels them to the stages of DelFest and beyond.  We each remember many DelFest artists way before they were launched into the musical stratosphere.  We were blown away by some of the first-time and emerging acts at this year's DelFest, including Birches Bend, Buffalo Wabs & The Price Hill Hustle, and Sicard Hollow.  Take a stroll down memory lane and check out this link to see all previous lineups - we are sure you will recognize a few beloved artists.

There is so much that ticket holders grow to love about the annual festival, and talking with countless folks around the campground and beyond just solidified the fact that once you get a sample of what festival fun on Memorial Day Weekend can be like, you’re marking your calendar for a return trip every year after.  Families bring the youngest and oldest members, and there is something for all of them to do.  It’s not only the undeniable fact that when you’re here, you’re family, but also the setting where all the magic takes place is like no other.  You can float down the river to relax and cool off, sit by a campfire and listen to newfound musician friends jam into the wee hours of the night, take part in a canned food drive that helps so many people or see Del himself, driving around the campground smiling and giggling and welcoming family from near and far back home to what we have come to know as nothing less than Deltopia.

DelFest

There is a reason why so many say that "DelFest is My Happy Place." DelFest is not just a festival - it is truly a cultural phenomenon and a beacon of joy on thousands of music lovers and bands' calendars.  You cannot plan special, DelFest is where special just happens and while many fans got to experience special on stage for a few moments, others got to experience it at their campgrounds.  Some moments of musical special included hushed whispers about Jason Carter and Friends campsite jam that started late at night and went until the sun almost came up, seeing the genuine shock and appreciation on Leanna Price and Lauren Price Napier's faces when Ronnie McCoury made a surprise guest during their performance and the pure joy that seeped out of The Dirty Grass band when they concluded their set as they had an 'at-capacity' performance in the Music Hall.

DelFest
DelFest is our Happy Place

Beyond the stages, our hearts were warmed over and over again, watching musicians beaming from ear-to-ear off stage as they soaked in the DelFest experience and were allowed to experience being just another attendee.  We also got to see the fun through the yougest of attendees eyes, as we were introduced to the youngest attendee at DelFest, a month-old newborn child experiencing their first of a hopeful many more to come.  We saw the DELight in children's eyes as they played at the kids' pavilion, and also they sheer joy of kids-at-heart as they jumped in or out of their inner tube along the Potomac River.

The turnout on the front lawn for participating in restorative yoga sessions was much more than we have seen before and other health-conscious attendees were able to get their steps in early as there were two 5K's in the Allegany County Fairgrounds.  Vendors new and old allowed folksnthe opportunity to take home treasures of every varitey to remember the weekend by. and most importantly giving back to the Western Maryland Food Bank alongside an annual tradition at DelFest  Del's Army Food Drive are all among reasons why we love the festival and continue to grow the family.

One of our hardest jobs each year is to try and distill down four days of musical bliss and countless memorable moments into a singular article.  If we were to try and write a complete writeup, it would undoubtedly be 100,000 words, and we would still miss magical details that happened.

DelFest is our Happy Place

Above are just some of our moments worth mentioning and we know that each and every person who was lucky enough to attend this year's event, brings home their own special memories that they will forever cherish.  We hope that even more fans will have the opportunity to come to DelFest 16 in 2024 and create memories of your own at DelFest.

Genesis Owusu Emits Intoxicating Energy During Paramore’s Headling Show

Clothed in a black sheet, a towering figure crept onto the stage as eerie music flowed. Atop the massive body sat Genesis Owusu in pitch-black shades, making his DC debut opening for headliner Paramore at Capitol One Arena on June 2nd, 2023. Passion, spunk, and ferocity immediately slammed the stage, turning a once-tame venue into a chaotic whirlwind of exhilaration.

Hailing from Canberra, Australia, the thunder from down under rose up during Paramore’s 2023 North American tour to shake fans to their core. Formerly known as Kofi Owusu-Ansah, the Ghanaian-Australian singer took to the stage as Genesis Owusu, paving the way for his launch to stardom. Now, after releasing Smiling With No Teeth, he is gearing up for his global Struggler tour beginning in October.

Paramore's North American Tour with Genesis Owusu

Although the first act of the night, Genesis unleashed a colossal wave of fervor the minute his feet graced the stage. After coating the venue in red, Genesis unveiled himself, giving rise to his three backup dancers and singers slinking around like zombies. In his sleek matching jacket and pants, he slid effortlessly from stage right and left, taunting the audience with infectious single Leaving the Light.

Between his deeply mystifying aura, eye-grasping stage presence, and bracing lyrics, fans soaked up each and every ounce of electricity. The crowd moved in a storm-like motion, with rapturous sways and palms to the sky. With a plethora of songs in his musical arsenal, Genesis impressively managed to cram the majority of his hits into a 30-minute set.

Genesis took fans on a discography merry-go-round, playing one of his first hits, Void, to his chart-topper, WUTD. Revving up the audience, Waiting on Ya soon rang out, provoking a further uproar of screams and shrills. Spellbound by his captivating motions, fans mimicked the same energy, darting their eyes from side to side with each of his leaps.

In between songs, Genesis checked the audience’s excitement meter, repeatedly yelling, “DC, are you alive?”, to which fans would mirror equal elation. During GTFO fans hurled lyrics back at him, as the microphone pointed at the audience. Iconicly, at the end of the song, Genesis’s body rose to the sky under the muscles of his stage men, emphasizing his king-like essence.

Following a dazzling performance of Get Inspired and Don’t Need You, Genesis commanded the crowd with two smooth gestures. When his arm shot into the air, fans exhaled their breath in screams and when his arm fell, they tied their lips together. Fans followed his lead as he adjured stage left and then right, teetering between pressing play and mute.

Wrapping up, Genesis closed with groovy, elevating, and funky tune, Good Times. Disappearing briefly, the dancers exited the stage just to waltz back in with soaring blood-red flag that read “don’t forget to smile” in all capitalized black letters. As they danced with the flag to the rhythm of Genesis’ voice, the crowd collectively let loose one last time.

Though Genesis was not Friday night’s headliner, he seamlessly amped up listeners, preparing them for the bliss of Bloc Party and Paramore. With his eccentric, authentic, and compelling presence in the music realm, Genesis proves himself an artist to watch. If you missed his opening set at Capitol One, be sure to catch his headlining set at Union Stage on October 25!

From an early age, Pope proved to be musically inclined, singing in his church’s choir and writing melodies in his spare time. Creating music for 20 years, Pope is now stirring hearts from the musical hub of Nashville with Inside Voices, released June 2. The album gives listeners a glimpse at the raw, heartfelt, and soul-churning sequence of events in Pope’s most recent life struggles. After experiencing the emotional turmoil of pregnancy loss and an ectopic pregnancy that almost cost Pope’s wife her life, Pope was inches away from a devastating reality.

Shaken by this emotional rollercoaster of events and propelled by his love of his family, he paused the regular around-the-clock studio grind. “My relationship to my family is at the center of all things. It is the core of my life,” said Pope. On that notion, Pope, his wife, child, and a few friends packed up their belonging to head to Laurel on the Peconic Bay. In the midst of chaos, families came together to laugh, relax, and soak in sun, thus giving rise to Inside Voices.

“Where my wife and I were at emotionally, in the age that my daughter was when we decided to make inside voices, it just didn't feel right to me to go away and not be able to participate in their lives,” said Pope reflecting on his decision. “That's why we decided that it would be of real value to us to make the record in a house with all of us being together,”

Inside Voiced by Ron Pope

During the songwriting process, Pope wrote a whopping total of 75 songs, narrowing down the list to just 10 tracks, with one deluxe bonus. Side by side with longtime friend and artist Paul Hammer, the two worked tirelessly to create a body of work emitting echoes of the toughest times in Pope’s life.

Body Language, through its intricate meaning, simultaneously embodies a reflection of Pope’s initial writing process after his absence. In this moment, watching his wife and friends beam smiles and laughs across the room, Pope noted their seamless interactions. Basking in his wife’s presence, the lyrics began to flow. He notes the song as “one of the most important songs” he has ever written, after navigating through a dark depression and finally finding light on the other side.

When discussing the album, Pope specifically notes the lack of drums on the album. According to him, he wanted to showcase these moments in a stripped, intimate way, emphasizing their profound meanings. Simultaneously, Pope and Hammer could not hold tumultuous jam sessions, as his daughter lay asleep a few doors down.

“I touched every single part of this so intimately.,” said Pope. “ It's the most involved that I have ever been in anything because Paul and I played almost every part of this ourselves, in a little room together. So every note, I put my hands on I wrote every word, every chord, and I wrote all of these songs 100% myself. It's the first time I have done that in a decade. This was a statement that I wanted to make by myself. And so I did.”

While recording the album, another tragedy struck his life, with both of his grandparents passing almost within a week of each other. His relationship with them ran deep, with his grandfather and grandmother being his best friend and soundboard, speaking to them virtually every day on the phone.

In his song and music video for The Real Thing, Pope exhibits a physical representation of what losing someone so dear feels like. The video portrays Pope and his family gathering for a meal, smiling, laughing, and even toasting to the occasion. Suddenly, Pope finds himself alone at the dinner table, angry and confused, emphasizing the wave of emotion following the loss of a loved one.

In contrast to these emotions, Pope decided to add a cover of Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World. Although experiencing life’s greatest blusters, Pope built a new perspective for himself. “I can't be angry because they have so much good in my life. I want to be appreciative of those things, said Pope. “I think that it's easy to be a glass half empty. But it's work to be a glass-half-full person, to look at the good in your life and say, ‘the world is great, life is good, we're all going to be all right’. That's what I'm trying to do every day. That’s how you get to a wonderful world.”

From front to back, Inside Voices illustrates an insightful, authentic, and cavernous depiction of the pitfalls and treasures of life. Through his intricate lyricism and gentle musical elements, Pope inaugurates a thought-provoking gem for listeners to cherish. Teetering between sorrow and joy, Pope has left fans with a beautiful album, along with a piece of advice-

“For anybody that's trying to make it in the arts, be the best version of yourself, follow the muse, and don't chase a trend.”

Bennu Byrd
Interviews, Made in The DMV

The DMV’s Bennu Byrd Takes Flight

With her infectious aura, witty rhymes, and powerful flows, Bennu Byrd is stretching her wings and soaring to extraordinary heights. Fusing together elements of hip hop, go go, R&B, and more, Byrd unleashes a new-age twist of millennial soul music to the scene. Now with the introduction Fearless and its adoption by the Washington Mystics, Byrd further showcases her vast and vigorous talent.

Emerging from a family name and old Egyptian tale, the stage name “Bennu Bird” represents more than her stockpile of hits. As the tale goes, the sacred bird, much like the phoenix, rose from the ashes of flame, transforming into a divine, symbolic creature. Her fierce energy and bold personality resonated with the story, eventually adopting a version of the name as her own. “I felt like the Bennu Bird in that spirit of ‘you could knock me down or you could kill me even, and I could still rise up and be stronger and smarter than I was before’,” said Byrd reflecting on her stage name’s origin. “That's just my approach to life.”

Bennu Byrd’s In Rare Form Album Review: A Lively Addition to DMV Music
Female rapper Bennu Byrd blends the traditional sounds of hip-hop with electronic dance music and DC’s signature Go-Go style. Previously[...]

Hailing from the DMV and ascending from musical roots, Byrd grew up immersed in the DC music scene. Raised on the greats, Byrd fondly recalls listening to Frankie Beverly & Maze, Aretha Franklin, and Al Green amongst others in her musically inclined household. At a young age, Byrd’s parents fed her hunger to learn the origins of modern music, tuning her ear to elements now making up her original sound.

“I call it millennial soul music because it's from my generation,” said Byrd describing her musical touch.“And it's a combination of how we were raised on that 60s and 70s and 80s music and trained to be influenced by that music, but then take it to another level and create something brand new.” Being raised on a plethora of eras, Byrd incorporates tastes of each into her own authentic blend.

Although fond of music and a self-expressive poet in her youth, she wouldn’t pursue music as a career until later on in life. For much of Byrd’s life, though dabbling in drums and rhymes in high school, basketball reined at the center of her universe.

However, once embarking on her college journey at Clark Atlanta University, Byrd grew increasingly inspired by the city’s history and culture, fully submerging herself into the arts. After being motivated by a friend cyphering on campus, Byrd let her skills loose to the public. This sparked the steady writing process, and with unconditional support from peers, Byrd dove head-first into the industry.

After graduating from college, Byrd found community in DC’s Mousai House, a community for artists. Participating in their different activities and events, Byrd honed her skills as an emcee, gaining confidence with every session. “That’s really where I feel like my seeds were planted in the DC music scene, was at Mousai House,” said Byrd. During her steady rise to success, she began lurching at every performance possible, presenting her gifts at various venues across the city.

Since then, Byrd climbed rung after rung of the music ladder with every release. Her first studio album Incarnation originated in March of 2017, later followed by her first EP Featuring the Bennu Byrd in January 2021. Garnering increasing traction with each drop, her 2022 singles Reppin’ and 12-22-22 magnetized major sight from fans and artists.

In Rare Form, Byrd’s second studio album recently broke the surface this year. The 15-track heavy hitter draws on her life experiences, real-world issues, and musical procession, ranging from club-like jams to thought-provoking melodies. “I swear I feel like sometimes God just be putting the words in my head or putting these thoughts in my mind. They be dropping down from the heavens into my brain,” said Byrd illustrating her creative process. “That's how I feel about my artistry, my creativity. It's coming from another place. I don't know where it be coming from, but it be hitting me and then I have to put it down.”’

While pursuing music, Byrd simultaneously worked at after-school programs with DC youth, honing her skills from college. As a natural leader, she was “always mindful of the duty and responsibility to the next generation,” propelling her to positively impact the community. Following her mantra, she strives to influence by demonstration.“If Bennu Byrd falls, Bennu Byrd is gonna get up and I’m gonna be stronger and wiser. It’s really about being the example.”

Recently, on Friday, May 19, Byrd dropped her latest single Fearless, a raw depiction of her life philosophy. Molten lava and hot rock span the cover art, exemplifying the need for dauntlessness. On the same day as its release, the track was showcased as the Washington Mystics intro song for the 2023 season. As the team's highlight reel rolled, Byrd’s original creation blared through speakers. Through Byrd’s collaboration with DJ Heat, an acclaimed DJ in the DMV, the partnership between Byrd and the Mystics was born.

The placement of the song is a pivotal step in Byrd’s career. As someone with a deep love for basketball and fostering a music career, the connection between the two art forms was key. After putting in countless hours in and outside of the studio, her efforts bore fruit. “This is my first major placement. I've been doing music professionally since 2013. So this is like my decade milestone. And it was an amazing way to show people that this is not an overnight success.”

With every victory, Byrd excels to mountainous highs, paving the way for her musical trajectory. Currently, she is gearing up for a round of live performances, debuting her new releases at DC’s Capitol Pride and the Shag Room inside Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. Given her current orbit, there is no telling what the next months will bring. Be on the look out for pop up shows, partnerships, and tracks from the DMV’s newest soaring star.

“Every day I wake up and I want to make music or I have something to say. As long as I'm alive, then I'm still learning. And as long as I'm still learning and still experiencing, I'll always have something to talk about. There's still so much that I haven't done yet.”

The Wood Brothers Capture & Captivate Hearts During Their First Headlining Appearance At The Anthem

A beautiful Saturday in the district turned to sprinkles just as doors were opening at the Wharf’s favorite venue, The Anthem, as two forces of music nature rolled through town.  Charleston-based duo Shovels and Rope brought their southern charm to the stage and got attendees in the mood to dance.  The folk duo is made up of husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst and the twosome proved beyond a doubt that ‘what’s yours is ours’.  Switching back and forth between guitar and drums, both members showcased their talent to make for a great opening act.

After a short break, The Wood Brothers took the stage to kick off their 110 minute set and introduce fans to some of their latest musical genius.  The eighth and latest studio album from the threesome Heart is the Hero debuted April 14th and they hit the road not long after to share it.

From the first moment chords were touched onstage, the crowd was instantly able to understand the assignment.  The lights and lyrics all let us know we were in for an intimate and amazing night of music.  The hits we already know and love were blended perfectly with new music that we soon will.  Oliver Wood made mention “Postcards From Hell” being their first sing-along of the night, laughing and saying that they hoped all of their new ones would be ‘because they want to be rich’, joking with the crowd and adding ‘I mean we want to connect with the populous.

Chris Wood and Jano Rix

A ”Loaded” immediately followed by “I Got Loaded” made the crowd even more ready to party and the hypnotic blend of instruments from Jano Rix and Chris Wood mixed with the dreamy voice of Oliver Wood, made you wish the show would never end.  End it eventually did and so will the Shovels and Rope leg of the tour however ticket holders were treated to something before the night ended when all 5 shared a single microphone onstage.

Oliver Wood

The only thing that was left out of the evening was a well-loved dance break from Chris Wood, however it was as if they were sending a message when a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's  “Down on the Corner” was played in during the encore.  Really showing love to the D.C. music community, they even dedicated the song to someone very special who we lost recently, Shawn “Gus” Vitale a long time sound engineer who worked for decades at 9:30 Club, warming hearts and closing the show with an outpouring of love.

The Wood Brothers perform at The Anthem

We look forward to the next time The Wood Brothers return to Washington, DC, and eagerly await seeing Chris Wood dance with his standup bass at his side, hearing Jano Rix perform on one of his many instruments, having Oliver Wood's right voice resonate throughout the venue, and celebrate another incredible show conclude as they all gather around the mic stand during an encore.

Now that we have heard songs from Heart is a Hero performed live, we look forward to having them add many of these to the sing-along list for many shows to come. Until then, we recommend listening to the songs from Heart is a Hero (found below).

DC’s Very Own Rachel Burns Celebrate Her Upcoming EP Release At Pie Shop DC on May 31st

DC-based artist, Rachel Burns, will celebrate her latest EP release on May 31, 2023, at the Pie Shop in Washington, DC. She's assembled a DMV All-Star band and will be trading songs, swapping lead vocals, and performing original songs alongside some cherished covers. This night of music is certain to be a blast, and we cannot think of a better way to spend an evening in DC than celebrating alongside one another as we celebrate one of our very own.

Rachel Morgan performs at Pie Shop on May 31, 2023

The cancer-surviving mother of two has been an outspoken activist both on the streets, where for years she dressed in a Wonder Woman costume protesting the Trump administration, and in her music – using her voice as a beacon of positivity and a vessel for change. A graduate from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in Classical Vocal Performance, Burns has always had at least one foot in the music world, captivating audiences in Boston as well as her native Washington, DC with a mix of pop, country, jazz, and blues songs. After 25 years working in business and playing music on the side, she was ready to let her inner songbird soar.

It wasn't until more recently that she found her calling as a songwriter: 2022 saw the release of Burns’ debut EPLiving My Breast Life, a five-track collection that employed a mix of humor and hope to tell her breast cancer story in a unique way.

For Burns, songwriting is her way of celebrating life and spreading joy. "The emotion of joy is a higher frequency," she says. "I love how live music transforms an audience into joy. My concerts aim to uplift –after a few songs I love seeing people dancing and laughing! It's so important to move our bodies. Laughter, dancing, all of that moving and shaking is really good for our bodies and our souls."

Burns brings that same animated spirit and unique personality to her sophomore EP What a Nasty Woman, a record of resilience and protesting the patriarchy while celebrating the power of feminism. "What a Nasty Woman is about breaking through barriers of our societal conditioning-it's a humorous call to evolve from the past." Burns says. "There are some outright silly songs on it, but they are based on truth, putting a satirical lens on the patriarchal conditioning that we're all used to existing within."

Rachel Burns' activism, resilience, and struggle. But first and foremost, it's fun. "I think powerful messages are delivered with humor the best," Burns says. "They're most impactful when they're funny; we have a southern saying, you kill a lot more flies with sugar than you do with salt. The experience of creating this record also heralds Burns' emergence as a true bandleader, producer, and artist –owning every aspect of the creative process, from inception to release. It's "raw, outrageous Rachel" every step of the way, and whether you're looking to stick it to the man or just sing aloud, What a Nasty Woman is here as a form of therapy, entertainment, laughter, and truth. "I like to empower people to empower other people. I'd like to uplift us all with this project," Burns shares. "When I would dress up as Wonder Woman, I held up a giant sign that said, 'Time to bust out the golden lasso of truth' in glitter. Wonder Woman's superpower was telling the truth. The truth is really powerful; it can break down all kinds of barriers, and I think that's the kernel of a lot of my music: Truth-telling. We're going to laugh, dance, and be real –and not pussyfoot around anything!"

We truly look forward to celebrating Rachel Burn's latest release as we celebrate Rachel, her music, her indelible spirit, activism, and our community on May 31st at Pie Shop and look forward to celebrating the official release of What a Nasty Woman on July 7th.
