Album Review: The National Parks – Wildflower

This year has largely been colored by fear and uncertainty — disrupting the vision people across the country had for 2020. In the midst of everything going on, music is one thing keeping me grounded.  Listening to The National Parks’ new album Wildflower, gave me a feeling of support and faith that normalcy will return at some point. This is exactly why those in the DC area should look out for the next time this band is in town.  But I recommend not waiting. Listen to their album streaming on Spotify and other platforms now.

The band has been working on the album for nearly three years. Not only did they come out with the album in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, but they also have crafted an innovative way to tour the album while adhering to social distancing guidelines. Entitled the ‘Campfire Tour,’ the events have already sold out completely. “We hope the songs on this album can be a reminder that we are all in this together. We are so excited to release it into the world and to start off the Wildflower era around a campfire, playing stripped down versions and telling the stories behind the songs on the Campfire Tour,” said lead vocalist and guitarist Brady Parks.

The album gives off an indie-folk feel that speaks to the previous work of The National Parks, but also incorporates a bit more acoustic and electronic elements, making the album stand out. The tinge of an electronic sound is present in the beat in the background of "time," which contrasts the slow rhythmic vocals. In the beginning of the track the album is named after, "Wildflower,"’ the stark electric guitar in the beginning immediately brings the listener in as the rest of the song goes into a more indie-pop sound. These rock-influenced tracks go nicely with the slower songs on the album, like "Many Moons," which gives the listener a more melodic and tranquil vibe.

Since their initial album in 2013, this Utah based band has delivered indie-folk tracks that incorporate aspects of pop, rock, and cinematic electronics. This combination allows them to continue to diversify the typical sound you might imagine when you hear the term “folk.” The National Parks are composed of Brady Parks on guitar/vocals, Sydney Macfarlane on the keys/vocals, Cam Brannelly on the drums, and Megan Parks on the violin. While they bring songs reminiscent of the Lumineers, they make it clear that they can also create a sound that is uniquely their own.

Take some time out of your day to escape the clamor of the outside world and any gnawing unease so many of us have these days and listen to this album.  Or, watch their new music video for their latest single "Waiting for Lightning."

Made in The DMV, On Our Radar

Getting To Know: Lauren Calve

Today marks the release of Wildfire by DMV native Lauren Calve.

Calve evokes Patty Griffin’s dynamic voice, Bonnie Raitt’s smoky aura, and Ben Harper’s unique slide style. Her compositions find their ground in the sounds of blues and Americana, guitar and lap steel, but their strength lies in how they go beyond tradition into innovative melodies, structures and arrangements that define their originality.

We had the opportunity to talk with this vibrant, emotive artist about what she has been up to over the last few months, how Maya Angelou influenced her songwriting, and latest past times during quarantine, as we anticipate her newest EP.

Hi Lauren, thank you so much for connecting with us! Tell me, what have you been up to these days, musically?

Thank you so much for taking the time to chat! Musically, I’ve been really busy despite most everything coming to a grinding halt because of the pandemic. In April, I released “Better Angels,” the first single off my forthcoming EP along with an accompanying lyric video. Now, I’m busy promoting the EP, Wildfire, which will be released on June 23.

I am really excited to hear it. I have been following your work ever since I saw you perform at the Radiohead tribute show at Black Cat a couple of summers ago. You have such a unique way about you and your voice, your songs, they stay with me. I am a huge fan! I'm curious to know about your influences...can you name three artists who move you?

Different artists influence me at different times in my life. Right now, I’m really inspired by Phoebe Bridgers, Grimes, and The Lemonheads. I’m in the process of writing new material, so I like to listen to a wide range of music.

I just saw Phoebe Bridgers play at Black Cat last year, she was wonderful. Same stage where I first saw you play! I love to think of you two on that same stage. (Smile.)

And while we're on DC places, where is your favorite place to eat in the DMV?

Franklin’s in Hyattsville, Maryland is my favorite place! Their food is great, and they brew really creative varieties of beer. Attached to the restaurant is a fun general store where they have an amazing selection of puzzles (we’re super into puzzles, especially now)! And thankfully, they are still open. We’ve been getting take-out from them almost every week.

I haven't heard of Franklin's but will definitely check it out next time I'm in Hyattsville! So while we are listing things, I am always curious to ask artists' I admire about books or songs or movies that changed the way they think. Especially someone like you with such deep lyrics and emotion in your songs. Can you share a few that inspire your songwriting?

Lauren Calve (Photo Credit: Shane Gardner)

There were a variety of sources that made me think more deeply which then inspired my songwriting on Wildfire. “Shock Time” is the lead-off song on the album and was inspired by a line from Woody Guthrie’s journal that I came across in "Woodie Guthrie: A Life by Joe Klein." The production of “Wildfire,” and the visuals for the music video when I get around to making it, were inspired by the first season of HBO’s True Detective. And the bridge lyrics in “Better Angels” were inspired by a Maya Angelou poem, “Touched by an Angel.”

Lauren Calve (Photo Credit: Shane Gardner)

As if I wasn't already excited to hear this EP, now I'm VERY curious. I am going to make sure I reread Maya Angelou's poem before listening to "Better Angels." I love how art inspires art and that you have woven in things as profound as that poem with modern day HBO shows into this work.

So yes, we are in a strange time, tell me...what are you doing to take care of yourself these days?

We most definitely are. I just bought a fountain pen and a beautiful shade of ink, both of which were definitely “self-care” purchases. They make the simple act of writing luxurious. I’ve also recently discovered smokeless incense. I find it so relaxing and soothing to burn incense; I’ve found that my happiness is largely linked to how good my surroundings smell.

I love that. And have never heard of smokeless incense and am intrigued.

It's always interesting to hear what people are doing these days to take care when there is so much hardship in the world right now. Sometimes there are silver linings, too. I have a feeling your EP will be one of the things for me.

Last question: What part of staying home these days have you appreciated the most?

Lauren Calve

Staying at home has made me appreciate my cats more! I have four indoor cats and a colony of outdoor cats that I take care of thanks to a mom cat that decided to have three litters of kittens on my back deck. It may sound like a lot, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I know this makes me sound like a “crazy cat lady”, but they really are my best buddies!

I get it. My dog is my bestie and has meant to world to me these days.

Lauren, thank you SO much for taking the time to connect today. I am really excited to hear your new work and will no doubt have it on repeat in my summer play list. You are a tremendous artist and such an asset to the DC scene.

Thank you so much, and thank you for taking the time, it's been great chatting with you!

The Beat Don't Stop

“The Beat Don’t Stop” Debuts Sunday Night

June is a historically significant month for intended changes in the American way when it comes to the African American community.  Including Loving Day and Juneteenth, it is also celebrated as the month of Black Music History.

June 2020 has been a completely different chapter in a new, revolutionary book, to say the least.   For years, we have seen protests in many forms supporting the Black Lives Matter Movement and pushing to recognize the social injustices that continue to plague our black brothers and sisters.   The killing of George Floyd and far too many incidents since, have exponentially elevated the movement and enraged a community and world that seeks a new kind of equality - one that actually defines the word.  Regionally, we have used what we know best to help amplify the voices that need to be heard even more with music, specifically the music of the city - Go-Go.

To mark the historical time, TV One has announced the premier of the original documentary 'The Beat Don't Stop - The True Story Of DC Culture and Go Go' on June 21 at 8PM ET/7C to educate, entertain and pay homage to the African roots and the social impact that Go-Go music has had on Washington DC and the lives of African Americans. Black Music Month is the perfect opportunity to support this movement by giving credit where it's due; as much of black culture continues to be misappropriated by society at large.

DC Music Review got to speak with some of the key players that brought this film to life and we're honored to have the opportunity, to learn more about and share what the film and music means to the DMV and its residents.

We had a petition, and the petition got 80,000 signatures and it has brought worldwide attention to the issue of gentrification and displacement and culture ratio in all the black communities throughout the world, not just DC, not just America, but the world.  After that, other things happen, other people got involved and the music was cut back on.  Then I was like, 'We can't let this stop!' I've been involved with other movements with Go-Go and other things, but we get momentum we get excited and then it just goes to sleep. We don't get to the end game, which is the win by changing policy and getting tangible changes to institutionalized racism and inequality issues that affect black people. So that's what this is all about.

Ron Moten  //  Don't Mute DC Organizer

What we, as locals, consider the sound of the city, is something that has played a huge part in black culture, DC culture and now, is helping the voices of the BLM movement to be heard in a way which has been used in countries and communities since the beginning of time - through music.

Go-Go music is the indigenous sound of Washington, D.C., which emerged out of underprivileged neighborhoods during the height of the crack cocaine epidemic in the 1980s. It was largely blamed for the rise in crime and violence that paralyzed D.C.  THE BEAT DON'T STOP takes viewers through that history and addresses how the music served as a platform for African Americans to elevate and address issues such as class struggles, gentrification and the music's impact on black culture.

The long-awaited documentary was a year in the making and highlights the history and legacy of Go-Go music. It features trailblazers, legends and stars who have championed the sound throughout the decades. The film also delves into the evolution of the Go-Go culture, celebrating the legacy of the Godfather of Go-Go music, Chuck Brown, and the pivotal role Radio One played as the original broadcast platform for the music genre. Additionally, it examines the passion that fueled social movements, including the internationally recognized Don't Mute DC, which emphasized the music's power and influence amid a rapidly changing cultural landscape.

I'd like to say the reason why I got here is because of our Godfather, Chuck Brown.  Chuck, from what I recall in conversations with him, he told me that his roots musically were more so in blues and jazz. He also played in a Latin music band at one time, and so with those particular three four rhythm percussion patterns, that's what he used in the creation of Go-Go music.  Because of African roots and everything the way that we speak to one another with the drum and because Chuck just had the foresight to kind of put this whole thing together for us to follow basically, that's how it all came to be."

BT ALC Big Band Brings “Bring Forth Change”

This year has brought with it a slew of unexpected changes that have rocked the daily lives of people across the entire world. Much of this change has cast a shadow on the lives of so many,  highlighting the importance of little things that bring joy and positivity to your day.  This is exactly what I thought of when I first listened to BT ALC Big Band's new single "Bring Forth Change." This Boston-based band began playing together in 2011, created by trombonist Bryan Thomas 'BT' and trumpeter Alex 'ALC' Lee-Clark  (their initials making up the band's name). Since 2011, this band has become known for distinctive groove pieces that bring in local jazz and funk artists.

The incorporation of other local funk musicians gives this band the special ability to curate each track in its own unique way. "Bring Forth Change" follows this pattern as it brings a distinctive sound made from collaboration. It is a song that allows you to look to the future, a time where a global pandemic is under control and where people are all treated with equality and kindness, with systemic changes allowing all individuals to have the same opportunities. This song brings together jazz and funk elements that uplift the listener, encouraging us all to stay positive in these difficult times. It also is created by a diverse group of people, bringing together all of their experiences to curate this unique piece. The song features vocals from Nigel Hall and his bandmate Eric 'Benny' Bloom on the trumpet. You will recognize Hall and Bloom from their funktastic band Lettuce, and bring their own spark to the single.

"The cats on 'Bring Forth Change' are representative of this America I see today out in the streets—there's Black cats, White cats, Latino cats playing together, singing this message. I'm not sure we'll see the change we want to see without collective solidarity," said Alan Evan's, owner of Vintage League Music label and producer of the track. Evans was also on the drums in the single. The message of coming together to bring forth change becomes even more impactful in these past few weeks, with the need to help the Black Lives Matter movement in the best way we all individually can. "What I'm witnessing in this moment, with these protests, is unlike anything else I have ever seen before. I'm 46, I've lived through many moments of protest in the face of police brutality—I remember when Rodney King was beat brutally by police. But what's different today is that I see people from all walks of life out there, coming together collectively protesting that they've had enough."

What makes this single even more interesting is the way that it came together in the midst of all this chaos, with an 18 piece band working together to record, while still following the social distancing protocol that was strictly enforced as the single came together. "The idea to record "Bring Forth Change" was put in motion after Brian Thomas, Alex Lee-Clark and I were chatting about the possibilities of remotely tracking for an 18 piece band under the current social distancing protocol we are all following," said Evans. I think this song is something that can resonate with us all right now, and can even bring some light into your day as we are reminded that these times are temporary and that bringing about change is possible when we all come together to contribute.

We look forward to the day where we can see BT ALC Big Band perform live. Until that time, we hope you enjoy their latest brass forward, inspiring, groove shaking funktastic song. You may want to listen to it more than a few times and listen to it loud!

Happy Anniversary To The 9:30 Club! NPR Provides Over 100 Shows From The 9:30 Club To Celebrate!

A little over a week ago, or perhaps what feels like an eternity ago, NPR announced the release of over 100 live concert webcasts from the legendary, storied, and iconic DC institution - the 9:30 Club. The announcement was mean to coincide and celebrate the venue's opening on May 31, 1980.

Happy Anniversary 9:30 Club! We happily celebrate the forty years that you have been a part of our community and delighted fans through the decades!

NPR's treasure trove, in particular, chronicles performances from 2005 through 2017, with some peak coverage during the 2006 and 2007 timeframe.

The list of performers that graced its stages contains a staggering depth and breadth of performers. The venue has never limited itself to a single genre and has always embraced all forms of music. Because of this, touring artists are always looking to the venue's calendar for an open date. While the venue has welcomed national touring artists, it is worth noting that local artists have been able to live out their musical dreams by joining the headliners as supporting acts.

The 9:30 Club is a true Washington DC institution - it is our home venue, it belongs to all of us, and we embrace and value it. Lastly, we let our memories to dance in our heads and allow those wonderful times to bring some deep, deep smiles to our faces and hearts.

When the venue does open it's doors to live music again, please visit their history room at the back of the venue where you can walk through history as you look though walls of CD's chronicling their history. While the venue remains closed, please celebrate their rich history here.  Until the 9:30 Club reopens its doors to live music, please enjoy the concerts that NPR has graciously provided the community.

We want to note that the 9:30 Club once again embraced the community and welcomed them into their hallowed halls this past weekend during the peaceful demonstrations throughout the city. The club was one of many to provide the community some respite from the weather and provide bathrooms, first aid, hand sanitizers, and charging stations during a long and meaningful day for the city and the nation. What a way to start your 40th year in DC!

We recognize that there are a lot of very deserving  people and organizations in need right now. If you do have the means or ability to also include the staff of the I.M.P. family, you can do so by purchasing some of their merchandise here. In particular, I.M.P. has set up a Family Fund to help their out-of-work hourly employees.
