Charm City Bluegrass Announces Their 2023 Lineup!

There are a few signs of Spring around Baltimore and Washington DC, Cherry Blossoms blooming, colorful flowers coming back to life, and for music lovers, the arrival of Baltimore's beloved Charm City Bluegrass Festival.

Last year Charm City Bluegrass reappeared on the music calendar after a necessary two-year hiatus.  This year, Charm City Bluegrass returns for a very special 10th year and returns to where it all began - Union Craft Brewing! Those who have not been to Union Craft Brewing in some time also moved locations a few ago and now reside in the expansive Union Collective in Hampden.

Charm City Bluegrass Festival 2022 – Festival Season Makes A Glorious Return To Baltimore
This past weekend music fans from throughout the region once again descended on Druid Hill Park in Baltimore, MD, for[...]

Aside from a location change, the festival has also pushed its date back one week and will now take place on May 5th & 6th, 2023, starting at 3 PM on Friday and continuing at 10 AM on Saturday with a late night at The 8x10 when music concludes. Never forget or underestimate an 8x10 afterparty. We all fondly recall some legendary performances held there, including the 2018 afterparty that featured Jeff Austin and a certain Billy Strings made a guest appearance that night.

This year festival organizers have crafted a spectacular lineup that includes:  The Infamous Stringdusters (Saturday), The Steel Wheels (Friday), Cris Jacobs's tribute to John Prine (Saturday), Magic Beans (Friday & Saturday), Roots Of-Creation Presents Grateful Dub – Tribute to the Pizza Tapes (Friday), Fireside Collective (Saturday Late Night at The 8x10), Twisted Pine (Friday), Wood Belly (Saturday), Pert Near Sandstone (Saturday), Caleb Stine (Saturday), The Honey Dewdrops (Saturday), The High and Wides (Saturday), Hampden Bluegrass All-Stars (Saturday), The Wildmans (Saturday), Chatham Rabbits (Saturday), Parker Zelter McCown & Friends (Friday), D.T. Huber and Whale Show (Friday). In addition, Allie Kral (formerly of Yonder Mountain String Band) will serve as the festival's Artist-at-Large and provides wonderful fiddle accents to many of the performances on each day of the festival.

Charm City Bluegrass Festival's 2023 Lineup

Friday will feature performances indoors and on the outdoor patio. Saturday will feature music on stages both indoors and outdoors.

We look forward to celebrating Charm City Bluegrass's 10th anniversary with other passionate bluegrass music fans at Union Craft Brewing on May 5th and 6th.

Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams Are Coming to Washington, DC On February 24 and March 31 Alongside Some All-Star Lineups

Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams will be coming to Washington, DC, twice late this winter. Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams will perform at The Kenndey Center alongside an all-star ensemble on February 24th and once again at the Miracle Theatre on March 31st, when they play along side and co-headlining with Shawn Mullins.

For those who don't know about Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, you may recognize Campell as Bob Dylan's touring guitarist from 1997 to 2004, and also someone who had a decade-long relationship with Levon Helm, producing his records and playing in Helms band alongside his wife, Teresa Williams. Since Levon's passing, Campbell and Williams have continued backing up friends like Jackson Browne and Hot Tuna and recording albums of their very own.

"Live At Levon's!" - Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams

Live At Levon's! - Available February 3, 2023

In the Autumn of 2019, after months of touring, they returned to their adopted hometown in Woodstock, NY, to celebrate with two sold-out performances on September 20 and 21 at Levon Helm Studios.

Both shows were multi-tracked and are now being released as their latest album, Live At Levon's!  This jubilant 12-track collection will be released on February 3rd, 2022. This album will a compelling mix of fan favorites, including "Surrender To Love," "When I Stop Loving You," "It Ain't Gonna Be A Goodnight," among others while introducing their audience to previously unreleased songs, "Angel Of Darkness," "Big River," "Let Us Get Together."

Live At Levon's! - Available February 3, 2023

Live At Levon's!  was intended to be the cornerstone for big plans that had been made for the following year. The pandemic, of course, changed everything, both globally and close to home. After performing at New York's Beacon Theatre, Campbell woke up on March 16th, 2020 in Woodstock coughing and feverish. Following a diagnosis of Covid, he was left to quarantine alone while Williams was stuck quarantined and worrying in New York City. A couple of harrowing weeks later, Larry's fever broke.

A sneak peek of what to expect from Live At Levon's! - "Angel Of Darkness"

Fast forward to Autumn 2022.  Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams are once again performing live in front of fans - no more watching performances online or listening to their albums at home.  Their touring plans of 2020 for Live at Levon's!  have been reimagined for 2023, and they are back touring with their ever-so-powerful live performances. Campbell, Williams, and their band have always had a reputation for a high level of musicianship, and stage presence are beautifully captured on this forthcoming album.

We look forward to hearing that same warmth, joy, and spontaneity captured on this album resonate at the Kennedy Center and Miracle Theatre.

Be sure to check out all major music streaming platforms on February 3, 2022, when Live At Levon's! becomes available.

Peter Mulvey and Ireland’s Own Anna Mieke Are Coming To Jammin’ Java On February 5

Peter Mulvey and Anna Mieke are set to perform at Jammin' Java in Vienna, Virginia, on February 5th, 2023.  These two artists are set to perform an incredible night of folk acoustic music at Jammin' Java.

Mulvey is an established, and cherished folk musician who last performed at Jammin' Java on March 27th, 2019, and alone is a compelling reason to venture to downtown Vienna.  This time around, Mulvey brings Ireland's own and much-celebrated folk artist Anna Mieke.

In 2019, Mieke released her critically acclaimed debut album, Idle Mind,  and earned her a nomination for 'Best Emerging Act' in Ireland.  Fast forward three years, Mieke was named 'Best Irish Solo Act of 2022' by The Irish Times.  Given the fantastic upward trajectory of Mieke's music and career, it was time for her to set sail to America from her native shores.

The Jammin' Java performance is part of Anna Mieke's first major North American tour in support of her latest album, Theatre, which was released in November 2022.  Her latest album envelopes listeners in the warmth of her world, radiating with an intense heat that lies closer to the desert or the jungle than her hometown of Wicklow, Ireland.  This album is a surreal soundtrack of a vast personal plain steeped in nostalgia, family, memory, death, and dreaming–where gritty reality and romanticism meet.

It is worth noting that if you are a fan of Nick Drake, you are sure to love his influence on the music of Mieke. In a 2019 interview, she recalled the profound influence Drake's music had on her life and her music.

We look forward to two incredible musicians performing at Jammin' Java on February 5th. Come for an evening of beautiful music and storytelling. Come for the music and fall in love with two incredible musicians and their music.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Set To Perform Two Funk-Tastic Nights At The 9:30 Club

Baltimore's beloved band, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, is set to perform two funk-tastic nights at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, on Friday, February 3rd, and Saturday, February 4th. What better way to spend two nights in the DMV than taking roost at the 9:30 Club with the rest of the flock?

Over the years, the DMV has witnessed and has been spoiled by the likes of these talented musicians - Greg Ormont (vocals, rhythm guitar), Jeremy Schon (lead guitar), Ben Carrey (bass), and Alex "Gator" Petropulos (drums).

To attend a Pigeons concert is to surrender to the flow; in fact, Pigeons doesn't just have performances - Pigeons entertains an audience with parties of joy and enthusiasm.  Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia along with the rest of the country have been completely submerged in these parties of unending joy and creativity since the band's inception at the University of Maryland in 2009.

“We want to offer people an escape, a place where they can leave all their troubles and worries behind and embrace the joy of human connection. Our mission with our music is to create the most blissful, carefree experience possible.”

This band continues to delight fans with joyous pajama parties as we all sing along to  "Hakuna Matata." They have amazed us with their creative Halloween musical mashups that have recently included a Beatles and Red Hot Chili Peppers inspired "Red Hot Sgt. Peppers," and a Daft Punk and Pink Floyd inspired "Daft Side of the Moon." During the worst of the pandemic, they performed at the Frederick Fairgrounds, where Greg Ormont wore a Baltimore Raven's inspired t-shirt to show fans where his love and loyalty lay.

The 9:30 Club is just a short one-hour drive from their hometown in Baltimore, the flock is sure to be out in full force. The band continues to sell out shows regularly and rides a wave of momentum that continues to grow.

Don't sit on purchasing these tickets - if you act now, you can buy a limited two-night pass and save $10.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the 9:30 Club for two funktastic nights of overflowing, joyous music.

Twiddle Set To Launch Their 2023 Winter Tour At The 9:30 Club on January 19th, 2023

Twiddle is set to perform at the 9:30 Club on January 19th, 2023. The Vermont-based quartet has been touring since 2004 and is no stranger to the DMV, having performed at the 9:30 Club, The Anthem, The 8x10, Rams Head Live, Baltimore Soundstage, The Jefferson Theater, and Lockn. Twiddle is also no stranger to kicking off their tours at our beloved 9:30 Club. In 2020 they kicked off their 2020 Winter Tour at the 9:30 Club on January 25th, 2020.

Twiddle Enjoys Television & Movies With A Very Memorable 9:30 Club Run
Twiddle's first headlining show at 9:30 Club was in 2016. This year, an anxious and energetic crowd greeted fans at[...]

Many things have taken place since their last performance, but their powerful performances have stayed the same. Incendiary and peaking guitar solos by Mihali Savoulidis, delicate and complex music by keyboardist Ryan Dempsey, and powerful notes and 'Gubb Dumps' by bassist Zdenek Gubb. One thing that has changed is Adrian Tramontano (of Kung Fu), who is filling in for Brook Jordan on drums while Brook is on hiatus from the band.

Another thing that has changed since Twiddle last performed at the 9:30 Club is the release of their latest album, Every Last Leaf.  This album, released on August 12th of this year, was a much anticipated and celebrated followup to Plump: Chapter 2, released in 2017.

Every Last Leaf is an album about life and the emotions that come along with it - the good, the bad, and everything in between. It's a metaphor for the circle of life; as one leaf dies and falls off the tree, it becomes part of the Earth, feeding the very roots that gave it life and creating new life in the process.

While Twiddle is no stranger to the DMV, this is your opportunity to hear songs from Every Last Leaf performed live. An even more compelling reason to see Twiddle perform at the 9:30 Club is that this may be one of your last opportunities to see Twiddle perform live in Washington, DC. On November 29th, 2022, Savoulidis announced that the band will take an indefinite hiatus for the foreseeable future, with 2023 being their last year touring.

If we were to sum up why you should see Twiddle perform on the 19th, we look no further than Zdenek Gubb's song "The Mission" from Every Last Leaf - "I'm gonna speak my mind / It's time to listen / You know that feeling inside / That funny premonition / Don't deny it anymore, it's time to accept the mission."

We look forward to seeing Twiddle kick off their 2023 Winter Tour at the 9:30 Club on January 19th. We hope you accept the mission and make it to the 9:30 Club.

Winners of the Smithsonian Institution’s 2022 James Smithson Bicentennial Medal for her contributions to American Culture and the Arts (L-R: Anthea M. Hartig, Director of the Smithsonian's American History Museum, Susan Tedeschi, Dave Grohl, Gloria Estefan, Emilio Estefan)

Gloria Estefan, Emilio Estefan, Dave Grohl, and Susan Tedeschi Honored With The James Smithson Bicentennial Medal At The Smithsonian

On December 9th, 2022, the new Culture Wing at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History opened to the public.  The expansive Ray and Dagmar Dolby Hall of American Culture now houses the new  "Entertainment Nation / Nacion del Espectaculo" exhibit.

A replica of Prince's "Yellow Cloud" guitar with the real one just behind under glass.

This new exhibit is the first dedicated exploration of entertainment history and will be a must-see attraction for any pop history fan. Where else can you play a replica of Prince's "Yellow Cloud" guitar or walk on a piece of the mythical Woodstock stage? You may not have witnessed Woodstock, but now you can walk upon an actual piece of Woodstock stage, turn around and see the guitar that Jimi Hendrix played at Woodstock hanging only a few feet away from you.  You can also find a necklace worn by Nipsey Hussle or a turntable used by  Grandmaster Flash.  These are just a few items of musical significance that we point out amongst hundreds of historical artifacts. Trust us when we say that this exhibit is a “must-see'' for any music lover or lover of pop history.  Even if you have been to this National American History Museum before, this newly curated exhibit is sure to delight you and others in every possible way.  Head through the entrance of the museum and then straight upstairs to the 3rd floor to see this breathtaking and exhaustive exhibit of sports and entertainment in America.

A replica of Prince's "Yellow Cloud" guitar with the real one just behind under glass.

Coinciding with the opening of this new culture wing was the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal presentation to four musicians recognized for their contribution to American Culture and the Arts through music - Gloria Estefan, Emilio Estefan, Dave Grohl, and Susan Tedeschi.

Each of these artists' careers spans multiple decades, and their music is deeply entrenched and interwoven into the fabric of American culture. The music of superstar Latin pop couple Gloria Estefan and Emilio Estefan's Miami Sound Machine is instantly recognizable and makes anyone want to start dancing and captures their heart with emotion. Dave Grohl is a hometown hero hailing from Springfield, Virginia, and has established himself as a worldwide musical icon as a member of Nirvana and Foo Fighters. Finally, Susan Tedeschi, first with her namesake band, Susan Tedeschi Band, and then with Tedeschi Trucks Band, is a torchbearer for the blues and has been captivating fans around the globe with her powerful voice and guitar.

Before the ceremony, honorees could be seen walking the new exhibition hall and taking in the exhibit with the same enthusiasm as museum-goers would do the following day. Despite these four artists having a massive and profound impact on American and worldwide music, they each came from disparate musical backgrounds and could be seen introducing themselves to one another as their music careers finally intersected. From an outsider's perspective, it looked as though Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, and David Grohl were becoming fast friends with mutual admiration for one another. Meanwhile, journalists from Telemundo broadcasting beamed with pride as they eagerly anticipated the award ceremony and the honor bestowed upon Gloria and Emilio Estefan. After the award ceremony, Telemundo was found interviewing the Estefans in front of the dress Gloria wore in the 1987 music video for "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" and Emilo's conga - all parties radiating with pride.

The ceremony was hosted by Dr. Anthea M. Hartig, Director of the National Museum of American History and the first woman to hold the post since the museum opened in 1964. After some brief opening remarks, Hartig would introduce Dr. John Troutman, one of the curators from the Division of Cultural and Community Life at the National Museum. Troutman quickly said what everyone in attendance was thinking "I just want to take a moment to acknowledge that most of us don't normally get to have so many of our musical heroes in one room."

Dr. Anthea M. Hartig and Gloria Estefan

In honoring Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Troutman remarked that “Gloria’s voice was exciting and infectious, inviting us all to join the revelry of music that took no prisoners, and was determined to unify the Western Hemisphere and improve that was rooted in tradition with a thirst for breaking down any barriers to reform.”  Troutman reminded us, if not reinforced, the profound cultural impact that the Estefan's had in the United States and abroad - three Grammy awards, 38 number-one hits, 100 million records sold, two performances at the Superbowl, recording the official song of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics that Gloria Estefan performed during the Olympic closing ceremonies, and Gloria Estefan's 2015 Presidential Medal Of Freedom.  Dr. Hartig continued to lavish praise on Gloria Estefan and concluded her remarks by saying, “the Smithsonian Institution proudly presents the James Smithson bicentennial medal to Gloria Estefan.  From her singing for solace to infusing the world with her sound, for her generosity of spirit, shaped by inner courage and resilience, and her devotion to family and the global community. With a commitment to philanthropy and the arts. Through the expression of these values and achievements, she has contributed to the fulfillment of James Smithson's mandate for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.”

Gloria Estefan graciously and emphatically accepted this national honor.  “I am speechless.  Honestly, while wearing that dress in the exhibit for 'Rhythm Is Going To Get You' this was not in my thoughts or dreams. I came here when I came to the United States when I was two years old. My father brought us here to live in freedom because he knew what was facing our homeland. And this country opened its arms to us, allowed us to live our dreams, and told us that we could.  Sometimes, people in the industry would tell us that we couldn't.  We held tight to who we are culturally.  I think that that's what allowed us to be different and to break through.  There are many, many incredibly talented musicians that are out there doing the thing, all of which deserve a great amount of recognition and might possibly never get to feel what it's like to be a part of the Smithsonian. To them, I offer my hopes that they continue to do what they do because music really unites us throughout the world. I've been able to experience, like others, firsthand the connection that music makes, and that is a truly wonderful thing.  So thank you so much for honoring me in this incredible way, and thank you, Emilio, for making me a singer.”

Dr. Hartig then introduced Emilio Estefan.  Hartig presented Emilio Estefan his award and concluded her remarks by thanking Emilio for “his embodiment of American creativity through the expression of music and the arts for valuing entrepreneurship, innovation, and freedom for his foresight and persistence and infusing Latin rhythms into the American Songbook, thereby transforming contemporary entertainment. For his commitment to the humanities and philanthropy.”

Emilio Esteves would accept the award with a humble and heartfelt acceptance speech.  “When we started, they said our sound was good but we would have to change our last names but we didn't do that. Because I remembered that we live in the best country in the whole world and dreams come true.  We are lucky and blessed to live in America. I like to say something in my native language … (continues in Spanish).  God bless America, thank you for.”

The American musical landscape, if not the global landscape, is richer for Gloria and Emilio Estefan's music and philanthropic contributions.

Dr. Krystal Klingenberg, presenter and curator at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, described Dave Grohl as "a history of contemporary rock and roll in of itself" and "he is the living embodiment of how musical talent combined with perseverance and curiosity can deliver music to everyone." Director Hartig would also speak a few words about Grohl and talk of her connection with Grohl’s time living in Seattle as she too was a "left coast girl" and how his music during the time of Nirvana had an impact on her as well as an entire generation. Hartig would also point out that Grohl was a DC Area Native, which drew a large hometown applause.

Grohl started his speech by thanking the audience and saying, "as was mentioned earlier, I am a DC Area Native, so this award holds a lot more weight than some of the others."  After more cheers and acknowledgement by a hometime crowd, Grohl continued. "I think that having grown up here and spent so much time in the Smithsonian over the years. Whether it was school field trips when I was a kid or my mother, who was a public school teacher and who would have the summers off, we would visit the Smithsonian. On those terribly hot and humid days, we would escape the heat by just coming to the Smithsonian for the air conditioning. But in doing that, we got to grow up here and experience so much culture and so much art. We realized that all of the things here at the Smithsonian, you really do lay the foundation for the dreams that you have in your life.   Coming here today, with all of these amazing people who I've just met, I started to realize that this is a community of artists and musicians.  In here, we have a place to celebrate a real community that goes back hundreds of years. So I'm honored to be here, and I share this award with all the musicians because it is this community."

Directory Hartig would introduce Susan Tedeschi next. Hartig honored Tedeschi and praised her for the "embodiment of the American experience for music. For infusing the American soundtrack with songs that transcend from grief to joy. For staying true to her artform - soulful vocals and guitar expressions of the blues, and for using her voice to share stories of hope in advocating for a better world."

Susan Tedeschi, the last honoree to speak, also had the most to say by lovingly integrating, acknowledging, and adding to key some points made by Gloria Estefan, Emilio Estefan, and Dave Grohl.  Susan Tedeshi has won a Grammy Award for Best Blues Album with Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2012 and has received six  Blues Music Awards. This award was different as it was the first award at the national level for Tedeschi and her acceptance speech showed the impact this award had made on her.  Her speech was filled with emotion and gratitude for those who influenced her along the way.

"I am also speechless, not only just because this is such an incredible honor but because, like you said, so lovely Dave - that it is a community. As musicians, we are all tied together. I was hugely influenced by you, Gloria, such a beautiful, strong woman, and your amazing husband. And now, I have a family with my husband, and it's an incredible gift. I also know how lucky I am to be able to be raised in the United States. We get to tour around the world, and it is an incredible gift. And not only just to be an American citizen but to be a woman and to be able to follow your dreams and to do things that people said girls really can't do. I was told "girls can't play guitar," so I started playing guitar just to prove the point that women can play guitar. I want to thank my parents for raising me in a way where I could be a musician and an artist and they always supported me. My brothers who told me I wasn't a good singer when I was little so it pushed me harder. It made me work harder. Don't let people tell you you can't do what your dreams are because you can, and I've learned that living here in the United States.  I also have to thank all the teachers that made it possible, especially the music teachers. My first music teacher was my great-aunt, Josephine Sabino, who was an opera singer, and she taught me how to breathe when I was ten years old properly so I could be heard all the way at the back of the room without a microphone  when I was singing.  I want to thank Dennis Montgomery III, who was my gospel choir teacher with the Reverence Gospel Ensemble at Berklee School of Music, for giving me the belief that I could actually play blues and gospel music and that music does transcend color and race, and that it doesn't matter, we're all the same. We are all the same inside, and I have to try to remind myself that not everybody understands that. I'm trying to make that very apparent with what we do in our band.  Our band is very diverse, with so many talented musicians. We are a 12-piece band, and we come from all walks of the world here in the United States. I have to thank them, my whole band. And Pearl Layton, also an opera singer, who taught me how to sing.  And of course, all the people that you learn from that become part of you and your sound. Everyone from Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Linda Rondstadt, to the Allman Brothers Band. I toured with the Allman Brothers Band and met my husband - so thank you to the Allman Brothers Band, they changed my life. To Willie Nelson and B.B. King for taking me under their wing and giving me the opportunities that they did. And Buddy Guy and Toots Hibbert from Toots & the Maytals for letting me record and live my dreams with all these amazing musicians. It has been such an honor.   And it's an honor to be given the James Smithson award, he was an incredible scientist. I always wanted to be a scientist, but I didn't know if I should go into marine biology or music. I'm glad I chose music. But at the same time, I'm really blessed that people have the opportunity to do whatever it is that you dream to do and that if you work hard enough, you can do it.   Thank you so much. It's been an incredible honor. Not only to me, my band, my family, and to all my musician friends that I've got to play with over the years. Thank you so much for your contributions to music."   DC Music Review was able to talk with Susan Tedeschi after the ceremony and told her how so many of her fans knew that she is a national treasure and how extraordinarily happy we all are now that she is officially recognized as one.

After the award ceremony, honorees and their families gathered for photos and photos and enjoyed a reception. Each honoree radiated with delight and satisfaction and gleefully displayed their award for all to see.

Despite the gravitas of this award,  the ceremony itself was a small gathering with less than one hundred individuals gathered at the National American History Museum beside this breathtaking new exhibition hall. DC Music Review finds itself very fortunate to be able to attend an award ceremony and we hope more fans can congratulate the honorees for this award and see the looks of radiating joy return to their faces when recalling memories of this award ceremony.

We wish to congratulate all the deserving recipients of the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal.  Each recipient has truly enriched the world in which we live in so many ways, and the world is a better place for your contributions on and off the stage.

Although Gloria & Emilio Estefan and Dave Grohl are not currently touring, it is worth noting that Tedeschi Trucks Band will be performing at The Warner Theatre in late February and early March.  We certainly look forward to DC Metro Area fans congratulating Susan Tedeschi for her recent medal and lavish praise on this national treasure in 2023.

DelFest Announces Their 2023 Lineup – Everybody Get On Board For DelFest 15

It is time to be festive for the holidays and we couldn't imagine anything else that would make us giddy with delight than the news of DelFest's initial lineup - DelYeah!

DelFest, the festival brainchild of Del McCoury and his extended McCoury family, is celebrating its 15th year in 2023, and for those who’ve been all 14 years or those looking to make their first Memorial Day memories with Del and the gang, today is the day everyone’s been waiting for: The initial DelFest 2023 lineup is here!

This year’s DelFest will, as usual, take place over Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28, 2023. From Trampled By Turtles to Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Sierra Ferrell to Sierra Hull, and The Infamous Stringdusters to The California Honeydrops, this year’s lineup once again reflects the all-encompassing musical community that festival hosts—make that 2023 GRAMMY-nominated festival hosts—The Del McCoury Band have cultivated over the years. DelFest will once again be held at the Allegany County Fairgrounds in beautiful Cumberland, MD.  DelFest originated from the desire to create a family-friendly music festival celebrating the rich legacy of McCoury music while creating a forum for world-class musical collaborations and showcasing fresh, new talent.

Just in case you have never been to DelFest or need a refresher on how special DelFest 2022 was, event organizers assembled the following recap video.  Oh to be at Allegany County Fairgrounds one more and rejoice in the best festival we know.

DelFest2023 - Initial Lineup

For DelFest 2023, The Del McCoury Band and The Travelin’ McCourys will be joined by St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Trampled By Turtles, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, The Infamous Stringdusters, The California Honeydrops, Sierra Ferrell, Sierra Hull, Rising Appalachia, The Tim O’Brien Band, Peter Rowan & The Free Mexican Air Force with Los Texmaniacs, Lindsay Lou, Cris Jacobs, AJ Lee & Blue Summit, Troubadour Session (Cris Jacobs, Anna Moss, Lindsay Lou, and more), Kitchen Dwellers, The Broomestix, Junior Sisk, Price Sisters, Handmade Moments, and Birches Bend. As always, Joe Craven, will emcee for the weekend.

DelFest2023 - Initial Lineup

In addition to traditional stage sets by these world-class artists, attendees can again expect to see one-of-a-kind collaborations, special guest sit-ins, various tributes to Del McCoury and his musical legacy, and intimate appearances from the aforementioned artists. Delfest will, as usual, be immediately preceded by the 3-day DelFest Academy hosted by The Travelin’ McCourys and other all-star players.  Don't forget to pack your bathing suits and inner tubes so you can relax along the Potomac River for one or more of the truly special Riverside Session performances.

DelFest is truly one of the most magical festivals in the region and is somewhat without words to describe it.  DelFest has special moments and keepsakes for everyone who attends - such is the diversity of entertainment and special moments throughout Allegany County Fairgrounds.  Some attendees talk about the Riverside Sessions, while others talk about floating down the river on an inner tube, and everyone talks about the sounds of instruments playing at fireside jams throughout the fairgrounds.

For those that have been to DelFest, this is a journey back to their home away from home - same campsite, same neighbors, same fun from sunrise to sunset, and memories that will last a lifetime.

For those that have never been to DelFest, once you make the pilgrimage to Cumberland, Maryland, you will understand why this weekend is more than just a festival.  It is a beloved home that is firmly affixed to the concert calendar for so many across the country.  For those that have attended DelFest, we know this is the initial lineup is the news that you have all been eagerly awaiting.

Scythian performs at Apaloosa Festival 2022
Concert News

Scythian Is Bringing Their “Ugly Christmas Sweater Show” To Union Stage On December 10th, 2022

'Tis the season to get that Ugly Christmas Sweater out of your closet and head down to Union Stage on December 10th, 2022 for Scythian's “Ugly Christmas Sweater Show.”

Named after Ukrainian nomads, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays roots music from Celtic, Eastern European, and Appalachian traditions with thunderous energy, technical prowess, and storytelling songwriting, beckoning crowds into a barn-dance, rock concert experience. Scythian is made up of brothers Alexander Fedoryka (vocals, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica), Danylo Fedoryka (vocals, guitar, accordion), Ethan Dean (vocals, bass, percussion, guitar), and Johnny Rees (vocals, drums, percussion). Each band member brings their diverse influences and backgrounds to create a truly incredible sound. The classically trained Fedoryka brothers grew up on Ukrainian folk music and bluegrass. Ethan Dean was raised on the greats of 60's & 70's folk-rock, and Johnny Rees brings a Cajun backbeat to the Celtic-Americana fusion.

Nashville's Music City Roots says Scythian is "what happens when rock star charisma meets Celtic dervish fiddling." The Washington Post claims, "Scythian's enthusiasm is contagious, and shows seem to end with everyone dancing, jumping around or hoisting glasses."

Scythian formed in 2002 in Front Royal, Virginia when a bunch of college buddies played Celtic music in the streets. Since then, this group has performed relentlessly and traveled the world, growing to become a headliner on the US Celtic Festival Circuit. However, as far away from home as this band may roam from home, they are firmly grounded in the DMV. Scythian has played host to the Appaloosa Festival that they established in 2015 and has occurred every Labor Day Weekend in Front Royal, Virginia, since 2015 (aside from the pandemic-induced 'Live Music Holiday of 2020'). Speaking of the Appaloosa Festival, this year's edition marked the festival debut of Smoke & The Poet, who will support Scythian at Union Stage.

So dust off that Ugly Christmas Sweater of yours and get yourself down to Union Stage for a night of incredible and energetic music.

Karina Rykman Is Coming To Pearl Street Warehouse On December 10th, 2022

The DMV is in for a special night of fun, funk, dancing, and unbridled energy when Karina Rykman comes to Pearl Street Warehouse on December 10th, 2022. This will be Karina Rykman's first appearance in Washington, DC, fronting her own band.

Who is this Karina Rykman, and why are we so excited to hear her and her band perform at Pearl Street Warehouse? Rykman plays bass, sings, jumps around, and laughs a lot. In doing so, she has garnered the attention of music lovers far and wide and gained an avid listenership. In 2016, Karina joined Marco Benevento's band on bass. With Benevento, she's opened for Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and many more. In the last few months, Karina has been everywhere - on the radio, on stages, on webcasts, and most recently on television with appearances on The Today Show, America's Got Talent and a feature on New York's ABC7. Most recently, Karina sat in with the 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Rykman straddles the worlds of jam rock and indie pop drenched in psychedelia, and her effervescent presence comes to life in a magical musical form. Rykman has performed on stages across the county, including several prestigious appearances supporting Khruangbin at the Capitol Theatre in New York and The Infamous Stringdusters at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. With the panache to win over any crowd, Karina's show has captured audiences' hearts at major festivals, including Bonnaroo, Peach Music Festival, and Sweetwater 420 Fest.

With only six singles released, Karina has built a reputation as an unmissable live act. Her debut single, "Plants" reached over a million streams, with the other singles not far behind. Best yet, a yet-to-be-released debut studio record looms on the not-to-distant horizon.

We had the opportunity to talk to Karina about her upcoming performance at Pearl Street Warehouse.

Many people are familiar with you as the bassist for Marco Benevento, but you are coming to DC as a solo artist with your own band. Can you tell us a little bit about your band, how you formed, your sound, and how touring with the band has gone.

I’m thrilled to come to DC with my own band for the very first time! Our first song “Plants” came out in June of 2019, and it’s sort’ve been off to the races since then. The band features my NYU pals Adam November on guitar and Chris Corsico on drums - absolute animals on their respective instruments. This year we got to play Bonnaroo and Red Rocks opening for The Infamous Stringdusters - absolute bucket list gigs for me and my band. It’s been a really exciting year, and we’re just getting started. It’s going to be a dance party of epic proportions.

We have seen you perform in DC over the years. Do you have any special memories of DC on or off the stage?

My favorite DC gig memory was opening for the Claypool Lennon Delirium at the 9:30 Club. The band had the big green room, and we had the smaller one - but the minute they walked off stage, they ran into ours. We spun records all night long with those dudes, and it was such a fun night - one I’ll never forget.

For those that have not seen you perform live with your band, what can people expect to see and experience? We know you are excited about your yet-to-be-released debut studio recording, will there be any new songs released this tour and will Pearl Street Warehouse for your Winter Tour closer?

My band is unbridled energy and a power trio that sounds larger than the sum of its parts. I’m planning on debuting a ton of new material all throughout this tour - we’ve been working really hard to dial it all in. Many tunes will appear on my forthcoming record. It’s going to be a dance party with infectious grooves, big improvisational moments, and, of course, bass bombs.

Thank you very much Karina! We really are looking forward to seeing this unbridled dance party at Pearl Street Warehouse on December 10th, 2022.

The only thing that could make this night perfect is a perfectly complimenting opening act. The music deities are shining brightly on DC because the fantastical and funky Natalie Brooke will open up for Karina Rykman.

For anyone wanting a sample of Karina Rykman's musical genius, please watch the following videos.

MerleFest 2023 - Celebrating 35 Years

MerleFest 2023 Announces Their Initial Lineup – Come Celebrate Doc Watson’s 100th Birthday In Wilkesboro, NC

Twenty Twenty-Three is shaping up to be an extra special year in the roots, americana, and bluegrass world as the music community celebrates what would have been Doc Watson's 100th birthday. It is hard to imagine that the ground has not frozen over yet, nor thawed out, but yet we already have our sights on 2023. How glorious it is to have something to look forward to on the cold winter nights that lay ahead.

MerleFest just shared its initial lineup for the 2023 edition of their festival - the 35th edition of MerleFest. In addition to reaching such a prolific festival milestone, MerleFest will also honor and celebrate North Carolina's beloved son - Doc Watson.

MerleFest was founded in 1988 in memory of the son of the late American music legend Doc Watson, renowned guitarist Eddy Merle Watson. Merle Watson was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in October 2019.  MerleFest is a celebration of "traditional plus" music, a unique mix of traditional, roots-oriented sounds of the Appalachian region, including old-time, classic country, bluegrass, folk, gospel, and blues. Over the years it has expanded to include Americana, classic rock, and other emerging music.

Many of us in the Washington, DC Metro Area have heard of MerleFest and always ponder making the journey to Wilkesboro, North Carolina. There is that intangible sense that "we should pack up the car/tent/camper and make our way down to MerleFest," which is recognized as one of the premier music festivals in the country and also one of the first festivals in the calendar year.

MerleFest is the perfect excuse to cruise straight down picturesque I-81 alongside the Shenandoah Valley and Blueridge Mountains. Although this drive will take you six hours from Washington, DC, the journey is worth the trip. The highway is sprinkled with picturesque landscapes, comes within an earshot of Devils Backbone Brewing's Basecamp  (we recommend stopping there for a tasty meal), and every mile is dotted with spring flowers, including the ever-present Eastern Redbud trees along the highway. MerleFest has camping options for your car, tents, and RVs, but there are also ample hotel accommodations in Wilkesboro. Road trip aside, people flock to MerleFest because of the sheer depth of talented artists grace the thirteen stages during the four-day event. To understand the magnitude of world-famous artists that perform at MerleFest, please look no further than the past lineups.

Speaking of lineups, MerleFest 2023 is set to be another spectacular edition of the festival. The initial lineup announcement includes North Carolina's favorite sons, The Avett Brothers, country mega-star and Highwoman Maren Morris, and the genre-weaving cultural collective Black Opry Revue. In addition to new artists, award-winning MerleFestveterans Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, and Peter Rowan are returning again to the stages of MerleFest.  Please check out the full 2023 lineup here.

MerleFest started as a small festival set upon a flatbed trailer as a fundraiser to help the community college back in 1988, and today MerleFest typically draws 75,000 to 80,000 festival-goers throughout the four-day festival. From that flatbed trailer stage at the 1988 Eddy Merle Watson Memorial Festival to today, and looking into the future, MerleFest will continue to draw fans from all over the world to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains each spring to make music, moments, and memories together.

Keep an eye out for more lineup announcements from MerleFest. If you have the itch to follow the roads south and hear some truly spectacular music, we think that you will not regret making the trip to Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in April 2023.

Today is the day we look beyond winter and think about our first long road trip of 2023 to enjoy a music festival once again. Seventy-five to eighty thousand people would agree with us.  Music, moments, and memories of world-class music with thousands of passionate music lovers are on the horizon for us all!

Tickets are available now. Please find the links for tickets below.   If you have questions, then MerleFest has answers - go to their expansive Frequently Asked Question page to see if they can answer any of the questions you may have.
