Phantasy Tour Introduces Live Music Trading Cards

Baltimore-based social media company Phantasy Tour officially unveiled its first series of live music trading cards last week. These cards are sure to be a fun collectible item featuring photos of some of the top touring bands from various musical genres. Like you, many of us at DC Music Review love collecting music memorabilia: ticket stubs, t-shirts, posters. Phantasy Cards adds something new to the mix - collector cards. Best yet, these cards are priced at $8 per pack, which is less than the cost of two drinks at a venue (based on the venue, of course).

Phantasy Tour Trading Cards

In the inaugural set, collectors will find cards featuring STS9, Leftover Salmon, The Disco Biscuits, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Tropidelic, TAUK, Goose, Bumpin Uglies and The Jauntee.

Because Phantasy Tour is a Baltimore-based organization, lets shine some additional DMV & Charm City love by showing off the cards of Pigeon Playing Ping Pong's very own Jeremy Schon and Greg Ormont.

Each pack of Series One Phantasy Tour Trading Cards contains nine randomly sorted collectible cards (from 50 unique cards in this series) featuring a musician or entire band.

In addition to the photos, a special card has been included to support and bring awareness to Backline. This tremendous organization connects the music industry professionals and their family members with a trusted network of mental health and wellness providers. We recognize the stress and strain associated with being an artist and the struggles of life at home and on the road.

Guitar Virtuoso Eric Johnson Brings “Classics: Present and Past” Tour to Fillmore Silver Spring on Friday

Grammy-award winning artist, Eric Johnson, returns to the DC area as a part of his "Classics: Present and Past" tour on Friday, March 6 at The Fillmore Silver Spring in Maryland. The guitar virtuoso will be celebrating his new album EJ - Vol. II, – which happens to release on Friday – as well the 30-year anniversary of his best album, the platinum-selling Ah Via Musicom.

Johnson has been traveling on a prolific odyssey over the course of more than four decades. Along the way, his creations have encompassed repertoire that cross pollinate genres which include rock, blues, jazz, fusion, soul, folk, new-age, classical and even country. InevitablyE.J. says it best himself in sharing. “It really boils down to the music and the song at the end ofthe day,” he explains. “If it doesn’t have that it gets boring for me. The most important thing forme is to grow musically and make a more expansive and meaningful artistic statement withevery new project.” [courtesy of MadInkPR]

We are looking forward to seeing Johnson's impressive fretwork and distinct guitar playing that sets him apart and has earned him critical acclaim over several decades. The Fillmore will provide an intimate space where Johnson and his band can take us on a musical exploration through his career. Don't miss this amazing artist in action.

Circles Around The Sun Shines Brightly In Their 2020 Tour Opener

On a crisp, cold Thursday night in Baltimore, Circles Around the Sun arrived in town and would bring with them some serious musical heat at The 8x10. This performance kicked off their first full-length tour since the untimely passing of their original guitar player and founding member, the late and great Neal Casal.

Adam MacDougall of Circles Around The Sun

I was at the Grateful Dead's Fare Thee Well performances in Chicago in 2015. It was during these shows that I and so many others were first exposed to the music of Circles Around the Sun. At the time, there was a memorable buzz in Soldier Field about the infectious set break music. I was joined by thousands of others in the stadium and others watching on webcasts in asking who was performing this magical music. Many months later, fans were very excited when the album Interludes with The Dead was officially released, and the band started sprinkling live performance dates here and there - spreading some magic musical spice into the musical cosmos.

Like many, I unfortunately did not get a chance to see the band perform live with Neal before he passed. I can't imagine as a band, how it must have felt trying to consider whether to continue or leave things behind to pursue other projects. It was Neal's wish for the group to continue on and keep building on what they had already accomplished.

The band decided to continue, honoring Neal's wishes, and also decided to have guest guitarists join the band and breathe new life and new interpretations of Neal's music. With obviously big shoes to fill, Scott Metzger of Joe Russo's Almost Dead stepped into the lead guitar position flawlessly this tour, and the band has not skipped a beat musically.

Playing selections spanning their entire catalog, including a jam from the album they made with Joe Russo, you could tell that band was clearly well-rehearsed, and the chemistry between musicians was obvious by everyone in the audience.

Opening with "On My Mind," from the 2018 release Let it Wander and then launching into an extended "Gilbert's Groove" from the Interludes With The Dead album, the band was locked in and tight the whole night, and the vibe was fantastic at The 8x10. I barely saw any cell phones in the air, which is refreshing, and always a good sign that the music has caught the full attention of the crowd. Tight funk grooves and psychedelic improvisation was the theme of the evening, and not a single person was standing still.

The band played like they have been together as a unit for a long time, and the new songs such as "Babyman" sounded great live. I'm very much looking forward to hearing the new album in its entirety and watching how these guys grow as a band moving forward. The album is scheduled to be released on March 13, 2020.

These guys are doing a tremendous job carrying on the legacy and music of Neal Casal. Looking back on the performance, you will recognize that Circles Around The Sun was not built around a single musical genius but was comprised of four exceptional musicians - Adam MacDougall on keys, Dan Horne on bass, and Mark Levey on drums.

If you are fortunate enough to live in one of the cities they are playing this tour, do yourself a favor and go see them. You will not be disappointed.

Elizabeth II Releases Bite My Neck

DMV musician and hard rocker Elizabeth II has been hard at work in 2020. Fresh off the heels of four 2020 Wammies nominations, she released "Bite My Neck" on March 1st.

Elizabeth II - Bite My Neck

Bite My Neck is a song that lyrically tackles the mysteries of new found lust in an age of uncertainty.

The song starts off with the haunting subtlety of a rhythmic backbone, a tip-toe-esque bassline, and soft melodic whispers from the queen herself that quickly punches you in the face with heavy guitar riffage and angsty harmonious screams the second the chorus hits.

We hope you all attend the Wammies Award Weekend, March 27-29, to see if Elizabeth II picks up any of awards.

Have a listen to "Bite My Neck" and see what you think. Want to get in a fight? Let "Bite My Neck" be your anthem!

Tedeschi Trucks Band Whips Warner Theatre Into a Frenzy for Final Weekend in DC [Photos/Audio]

The Tedeschi Trucks Band (TTB) returned to DC to finish what they started and delivered a pair of monstrous performances at the beautiful Warner Theatre. Friday, February 21 was a gem from start to finish and featured a stunning acoustic segment to begin the second set, complete with a pair of choice covers in "Keep your Lamps Trimmed and Burning" and the rare "All My Friends." The band then returned to their traditional electric format for a rousing take of Dr. John's "Walk on Gilded Splinters," a raucous "Key To They Highway" before closing with a thunderous "Storm > Whipping Post" coda.

The band took the stage for their final 2020 Warner show on Saturday, February 22, and found a way to top themselves yet again. The first set began with "Don't Do It," in The Band's style of the Marvin Gaye classic and we knew it was going to be a night to remember. "Shelter" included a magnificent vocal duo by Susan Tedeschi and backup singer Mark Rivers and closed with the band's classic "Bound For Glory."

The last of the eight Warner Theatre sets might have topped them all. "Leaving Trunk" (Taj Mahal) nearly brought the house down before the spectacular "Shame" and "Midnight Harlem" pairing that left the sold-out crowd in awe. Susan commanded the room's attention with a memorable "Angel From Montgomery" > "Sugaree" performance that soothed our souls. TTB wasn't done and took the adoring crowd for a musical ride to remember with a nearly 18-minute masterpiece, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" that was worth the price of admission alone.

The band gave us what we came for with a brilliant rendition of "Good To Your Earhole" by Funkadelic as they bid farewell to another amazing run in DC. Somehow, this may have been the best they have ever done it. Bravo, Tedeschi Trucks Band. You've managed to outdo yourself once again.

Guided By Voices – Surrender Your Poppy Field
Album Review

Album Review: Guided By Voices – Surrender Your Poppy Field

To call Guided by Voices’ output prolific feels like an understatement.  Since their first album in 1987, the group has officially released over 500 songs on 30 albums, 19 EPs, and through various appearances on soundtracks and compilations. In 2019 alone, the band released three full-length albums and one EP.  Yet this discography only accounts for less than a third of the songwriting output from front man Robert Pollard, the band’s sole consistent member and primary creative force, who has written over 1600 songs.

Now we have the band’s first release of 2020, Surrender Your Poppy Field.  The 15-song album opens with “Year of the Hard Hitter,” which feels like a pastiche of several ideas Pollard and company managed to deftly weave together into a song that takes the listener to several very different places, all fitting together quite nicely.  It serves as a taster for what the rest of this album is – a compilation of songs that will explore varying musical ideas while managing to fit together rather well.  The primary difference is that the remaining tracks typically lack the compositional diversity of the opener.

Throughout the album, the band commonly ventures into experimental territory, incorporating broader instrumentation and orchestration into many of the tracks.  However, once a song has established its primary musical idea, it rarely ventures beyond that.  Serving as a prime example, “Arthur Has Business Elsewhere,” a highlight of the album because of the horns and strings arrangements (at least for a band typically regraded as lo-fi; this album certainly isn’t changing the sonic landscape of modern music) over a chugging, mid-tempo chord progression.  Additionally, “Steely Dodger” sticks to its straightforward, guitar-driven aggressiveness, and “Whoa Nelly” is another track that seems to come out of left field but does not go any further in its sonic exploration then where it starts.  An exception to this is the album closer, “Next Sea Level,” which displays a higher degree of songwriting craft.

At times, the subjects and motivations behind the lyrical content seem ambiguous at best.  For instance, why is a 62-year-old man declaring “cul-de-sac kids have the best parties” and that he will not rat them out on the aptly named “Cul-De-Sac Kids”?* Overall, it seems the important thing on the album is not what Pollard is singing about or why, but simply the fact that he still is after all these years.

When it comes down to it, a band with the sheer volume of output that Pollard demands is most likely going to have some misfires and half-baked ideas.  The album does have some well-crafted and well-executed compositions, but many of the songs feel closer to interludes that could have used some more time gestating in the practice space.  Unfortunately, this prevents some of the ideas from sticking with the listener once the track changes.  One can’t help but wonder what would happen if, instead of releasing multiple albums per year, Pollard slowed his output down to one album every year or two, using this time to cull his ideas and focus on completing 10 to 12 well-crafted songs.  The ideas are there, but the execution is rushed.  The work ethic is admirable, but it is possible that the breakneck pace effects the overall quality of the albums.

With that said, the album is still worth a listen for fans or anyone looking for an entry point into a massive discography.  The band has had truly great moments throughout their career and remain a satisfying live act, and any music fan would do well to appreciate that.

Surrender Your Poppy Field was released on February 20 by the band’s own record label, Guided by Voices, Inc.  Be sure to catch the band when they stop in at the Ottobar in Baltimore, MD on April 3, the Musikfest Café in Bethlehem, PA on April 24, or College Street Music Hall in New Haven, CT on April 25.

Tedeschi Trucks Band Delivers Spectacular First Weekend In DC and Returns to Warner Theatre Tonight! [Photos/Audio]

The incomparable Tedeschi Trucks Band (TTB) returned to The Warner Theatre last weekend for a pair of stunning performances while honoring the memory of their beloved bandmate, Kofi Burbridge, who passed away exactly a year prior, on February 15, 2019. After a difficult yet important year of touring, the band seemed to hit yet another stride as they once again brought their signature brand of musical healing to the beautiful and historic theatre in downtown DC.

TTB returns to the same building tonight to close out their 2020 residency in The District. We will update this article to include a full recap of the first two nights at The Warner. In the meantime, enjoy audio recordings by the amazing Alex Leary and photographs from Josh Brick and Caitlin Moore as once again we are bound for glory in DC.

Lotus Blossoms Beautifully at The National

The jam scene has gone in so many directions in the past couple decades, it’s hard to keep track of what is included in it. It would be easier to list what isn’t included, but there’s not going to be much of a list. Bands in the scene have embraced genres from metal to jazz and funk to EDM. Richmond had a fine example of the latter two swing through the beautiful, historic, National Theater for a two night run recently. Lotus and Litz are fine examples of how the scene is growing and splitting off into more niche genres within itself. Lotus is a live action approach to EDM that skips the one person button pushing and intertwines jam improvisation into the steady beats and hooks. Litz digs deep into the world of funk, but doesn’t hesitate to reach into other realms such as dub, electronica, and soul. Richmond was in for two fun nights of musical showmanship with these two talented bands at the helm.

Litz opened both nights with that funk that gets you moving no matter who you are. The quartet, which consists of Austin Litz on keys, sax, flute, and vocals, Logan Litz on bass, Dan Gellerman on lead guitar and vocals, and Nick Thrasher on drums, percussion, and vocals, did not hesitate to jump in headfirst and get the crowd amped for the night. Between the catchy choruses and soaring solos, there wasn’t a still body in the house. Occasionally stepping out from behind his keys, Austin Litz would get the crowd stirred up and even work them into a frenzy at times. Litz’s solid foundation in funk is a great addition to any bill or festival. Luckily for the music community, these guys are always hitting the road hard. Keep an eye out for them in your town!

Formed in Indiana in 1999 and now based out of Philadelphia, Lotus has not stopped partying like it’s 1999. The quintet is made up of a rock solid rhythm section which consists of Jesse Miller (bass and sampler), Mike Greenfield (drums), and Chuck Morris (percussion), and has Luke Miller (guitar and keyboards) and Mike Rempel (guitar) filling in the melodies to make this one well rounded group that can crank out a night of dance tunes. Their sound is definitely and EDM style, but there are many other facets such as funk, soul, and rock that are interwoven throughout their catalogue. Mike Rempel’s solos are something to behold as he can go from slow melodic grooves and with the flip of a switch, transition into a shred mode that could impress even the most seasoned guitar players. Lotus adds a visual dimension to their music with an equally impressive light show. A multitude of LED beams can be found swirling in the foreground with a massive dot matrix style background that displays various patterns, colors, and even words at times. For a first timer, there is a lot to take in, but once settled in, you’re in for a night of auditory and visual bliss. They currently do not have an abundance of tour dates listed, but the ones that are up are definitely some heavy hitters including Red Rocks, two nights at the Caverns, Backwoods Festival, and Electric Forest.
